SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON HAZING POLICY

Hazing is illegal, morally wrong, conduct unbecoming of a True Gentleman, and contradicts the founding precepts, principles and mission of our organization. Hazing in any form is forbidden, and chapters must be free of hazing at all times. If you have to ask if an activity is hazing, it probably is. No member should ever feel he must prove his worth to be welcomed as a brother. Punishments for hazing can range from member expulsion to the closure of the chapter in question. Anyone who chooses to engage in or permit acts of hazing will not be covered in our general liability insurance policy.

DESCRIPTION

The chapter will invite Eli Shaw, the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, to discuss healthy big/little brother relationships.

Monday, September 1, 2024, at 7:00 pm, at the Chapter House

EVENT 1

Member Educator Adam must invite Mr. Shaw to speak.

Eminent Recorder Jake must announce the event during chapter meetings, send three reminder messages, and take attendance at the event.

The chapter can work with the Fraternity/ Sorority Life Office to find someone to speak to.

We can also work with our Chapter Service Consultant to brainstorm topics and have good questions to ask.

HOW WILL YOU HOLD BROTHERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT ATTENDING?

If brothers do not attend the event, they must complete an online module in The SAE Portal and help plan the next hazing prevention program.

HOW WILL YOU ASSESS WHAT BROTHERS HAVE LEARNED?

At the end of the event, each brother must submit an activity that the chapter can do to help build brotherhood.

STEP 3: PROMOTING POSITIVE CHAPTER CULTURE WHAT ARE THREE ACTIVITIES THE CHAPTER USES TO BUILD BROTHERHOOD? HOW ARE NEWLY INITIATED MEMBERS INCLUDED IN THOSE ACTIVITIES?

WHAT IS ONE ACTIVITY FOR EACH WORD BELOW THAT CAN BE USED TO BUILD BROTHERHOOD, AND HOW DOES IT ALIGN WITH SAE’S VALUES? Respect:

Respect is the mutual regard and esteem members hold for one another, their leaders, and the organization. It encompasses treating each other with dignity, valuing diverse perspectives, adhering to fraternity rules and values, and maintaining a positive and supportive environment.

Friendship:

Friendship in a fraternity refers to the close-knit and supportive bonds that form among members.

Culture:

The culture of a fraternity includes the shared behaviors, beliefs, values, and norms that define the chapter. It is influenced by the fraternity’s history, leadership, and the interactions among its members. This culture shapes how members behave, relate to each other, and connect with the broader community. A robust, positive culture fosters unity, ethical conduct, and a supportive atmosphere that aligns with the fraternity’s mission and values.

Tradition:

Traditions in a fraternity are the customs, rituals, and practices passed down from one generation of members to the next.

These can include formal ceremonies, annual events, symbolic gestures, and specific ways of doing things that reinforce the fraternity’s identity and values.
