Welcome to the 2023 Seattle International Film Festival! We are so excited to be able to gather around film to be inspired, entertained, and amazed by the world around us. Film makes lives better, and having the communal experience at the Festival is something we all look forward to every year.
At SIFF, we believe representation matters, and we have mindfully curated a lineup that shines a spotlight on the importance of culturally specific storytelling and authentic representation in front of and behind the camera. We are proud to present a grand total of 264 films from 74 countries/regions around the globe: 92 features, 45 documentaries, 125 short films, and 2 secret films. 23 of these films are world premieres, 30 are North American premieres, and 13 are U.S. premieres. 52% of our films are directed by femaleidentifying or nonbinary filmmakers, 69% are from first- or second-time filmmakers, and 73% don’t currently have U.S. distribution.
The 49th annual Seattle International Film Festival will be a hybrid experience, with in-person screenings of all films at venues around the Seattle area between May 11–21 and select streaming encore screenings May 22-28— across the U.S. in many cases.
Ultimately, the Festival is about enabling film to play a larger role in your life. Our job is to spend every day scouring the world for films that need to be seen on the big screen, making life more enriching, meaningful, joyful, and contemplative. Thank you for joining us in this experience, and happy watching.

We are dedicated to fostering a community that is informed, aware, and alive.
SIFF believes in film’s unique power to share original stories, diverse perspectives, and rich emotional journeys. Beginning in 1976 with the annual SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, then expanding into year-round programming and our five-screen SIFF CINEMA, we have offered experiences that bring people together to discover extraordinary films from around the world for nearly five decades. Our audiences allow us to take risks, host complex conversations, and truly appreciate film.
Our three theaters—SIFF CINEMA EGYPTIAN, SIFF CINEMA UPTOWN, and the SIFF FILM CENTER—screen arthouse and mainstream films, the latest international works, oneof-a-kind special events, and festivals. SIFF hosts the annual Seattle International Film Festival, traditionally attracting nearly 150,000 attendees to celebrate films from more than 70 countries and regions around the world. Many of the features, short films, and documentaries we screen will not return to U.S. cinemas, making the Festival a unique and amazing opportunity to discover new and underrepresented voices and stories.
We go beyond our screens to provide more opportunities for our community to be inspired by and learn from film and filmmakers. SIFF’s EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT programs cultivate community and support lifelong learning, cultural literacy, and creative expression. Through partnerships, we host a variety of special screenings and mini-festivals—many of which are open to the public at no charge. SIFF’s Programmers create a mix of screenings and gatherings that offer escapism, entertainment, and enrichment. Through thoughtful curation, we continually captivate audiences, strengthen our community, and support independent filmmakers.

PAST LIVES
Korean-Canadian playwright Celine Song makes her directorial debut with this beautiful and delicate romance about the depth of love and connection, as two childhood best friends reunite years after an untimely separation.
In this accomplished debut, fate is not predetermined, but inyeon—a Korean concept that the choices we make are based on pathways taken before, sometimes with heartbreaking results. Set in three distinct times, we follow Nora, who emigrated to Canada at age 12; Hae Sung, her childhood crush from Seoul; and Arthur, her husband. Nora and Hae Sung reconnected at age 24 over Skype, but the timing wasn’t right. Another 12 years pass, and the stillsingle Hae Sung visits the U.S. and meets Nora in person for the first time as adults. The tangled inyeon of the three is handled as a subtle simmer of quiet tension, heightened by inner anguish over missed opportunities and the clash of Korean and American cultures.

I LIKE MOVIES
In 2002 suburban Canada, a 17-year-old film aficionado with his sights set on NYU picks up a gig at a local video store where he learns what it takes to grow up and that maybe not everybody wants to hear him bloviate about Paul Thomas Anderson movies all day.
A nostalgia-infused indie that’s both a love letter to movies and a look at how, for one self-righteous yet loveable young misfit, they are also a coping mechanism. 17-year-old cinephile Lawrence plans to grace NYU film school with his presence after high school–just as soon as he makes a quick $90K. Naturally, he gets a job at his local suburban video store, but it isn’t as lucrative as he imagined. There, he forms a layered relationship with his manager that causes him to confront his self-sabotaging ways–but not before they blow up in his face.

MEET THE
PROGRAMMERS
SIFF is more than just an annual festival; it’s a community of creative, passionate people who live and breathe cinema. Meet the talented people who work and watch movies all year long to curate the best fi lms possible for the Seattle International Film Festival.
This year we asked:
IF YOU COULD LIVE IN THE WORLD OF ONE FILM FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Here are our programmers’ answers:
JUSTINE BARDA
The Great Beauty! To wander around Rome looking at beautiful and mysterious things, meeting fascinating people, and going to glamorous parties with great food and clothes, all in the service of philosophical musing and creative inspiration.
SUJ’N CHON
Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie. My reallife world could stand to have a little whimsy!
MARCUS GORMAN
Anywhere the Muppets are.
MEGAN LEONARD
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure—Just hoping I run into Large Marge.
RITA MEHER
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, because it has everything: love, good food, family, and Shahrukh Khan.
COLLEEN O’HOLLERAN
BETH BARRETT
West Side Story. All of my conversations would be in song, dance, and lots of finger-snapping.
STAN SHIELDS
Probably Riley’s brain in Inside Out, because of the endless exciting theme park options, and because it’s less life-threatening than the other film worlds that I like. I would probably spend most of her waking time in the Personality Islands (even hockey!), and the nighttimes in the Dream Creation Studios. I would definitely stay away from the Abstract Thought area, though—even if it is a shortcut.
ANGELO ACERBI
Barry Lyndon. To feel the wealth and power and the social privileges (and the costumes, of course) of that era, in a world created by the genius of Stanley Kubrick. (Watching him work would be the icing on the cake.)
SAMAH ALI
I’d live in the world of Everything
Everywhere All at Once because I am curious to know what my other lives could have looked like—right before my head explodes!
JAMES DAVIS
Jurassic Park—the first day, before everything goes wrong.
KIMBERLY DINEHART
Blade Runner (1982) has some of the best and most influential production design and worldbuilding in any form of media. I would love to visit future (past?) Los Angeles. That being said, I only have to be there a day, right?
DAN DOODY
This is a bit of a cheat, I’ll admit, but if I could live in the world of film for a day, I’d love to take a tour of all the diners found in Film Noir, from the lunch counters in Fallen Angel & Gun Crazy to the bustling restaurants in Sweet Smell of Success and, of course, the tiki bar in The Apartment. Those or Castle Frankenstein; that’d be cool, too.
MEGAN GARBAYO-LÓPEZ
I would love to live in the world of Kiki’s Delivery Service because the baked goods would be bomb, I could talk to Jiji the cat, and I could even ask Kiki for a ride on her broomstick. Studio Ghibli food always looks so delicious.
If I could live in the world of film for a day, I would live in Waxwork (1988)! Mostly because it’s a comfort movie for me and a fun adventure. And I would be able to travel through time and narrowly avoid being killed by infamous villains and monsters…all seen through the goggles of ’80s schlock!
TRACY RECTOR
The Grand Budapest Hotel would feel like a beautiful, luscious, psychedelic trip for a day. I imagine that I would be giggling the entire time!
CORY RODRIGUEZ
I would want to live in the world of The Nightmare Before Christmas, specifically Halloween Town. What more can you ask for than nonstop spooky fun, meeting all the monsters, and being graced by the presence of the “Pumpkin King” himself?
MARTIN SCHWARTZ
I choose the grubby Vienna of 1946; the bombed-out, post-cataclysmic, ex-imperial capital Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton) finds in one of my favorite movies, Carol Reed’s The Third Man. Filthy, impoverished, subjugated
26 49TH SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2023 @siffnews
by foreign powers, and culpable in unspeakable crimes, this is a city that hasn’t even begun to recover from the moral and physical destruction of fascism and war. A city where continuities with the Nazi past collide with a centuries-old multiculturalism. Where the necessities of life are only to be found on the black market, but you needn’t look far for indispensable comforts like Ferris wheels and live theatre and zither music and wine.
EMALIE SODERBACK
This is tough because most of my favorite films are horror or dramas—not exactly an ideal environment to live in for a full day. So I think I’ll go with the warm, lazy, endless vacation feel of Éric Rohmer. Probably Pauline at the Beach, or maybe David Lean’s Summertime with Katharine Hepburn. I think I’m just ready for some sunshine, honestly.
ANDY SPLETZER
If I only had a day in a film of my choice, I’d probably visit Caddyshack so I could play a little golf and goof off with some very funny people.
HEBE TABACHNIK
Roman Holiday by William Wyler so Gregory Peck can show me Rome for a day.
DARCY WYTKO
It’s a tie between Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams for the jaw-dropping beauty of it and Todd Haynes’ Velvet Goldmine for the sheer rock and roll thrill of being in the same room with Iggy Pop and David Bowie.
WE ARE HEARTBROKEN AT THE LOSS OF TWO OF OUR VETERAN PROGRAMMERS, RUTH HAYLER AND MARYNA AJAJA. BOTH ARE DEEPLY MISSED.
RUTH HAYLER
Ruth was part of the Seattle International Film Festival from the very beginning, serving as a programmer, board member, and one of the most devoted audience members of all time. Ruth loved films of all kinds, and loved finding an audience for subtitled international cinema in Seattle, especially at the Seven Gables / Landmark Theatres chain where she worked since 1976. Her influence is felt across all independent and arthouse cinema in the US, and we were so lucky to have had her as a member of the SIFF family for nearly 50 years.
MARYNA AJAJA
Maryna was a powerful programming voice at SIFF for more than 35 years, focusing on Eastern and Central Europe, the Ex-Bloc as she liked to say. But more than that, she was passionate about the Festival, film, and filmmakers, and making sure that stories that need to be told get seen. She championed the voices of women, new and invigorating (and often quite challenging) filmmakers, and above all, the power of storytelling. Her dedication and passion are dearly missed, a forever hole at SIFF.
