UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON CONTINUING INSTRUCTION ABROAD TRAVEL/STUDY TOURS 1980 CASTILE: HEARTLAND OF SPAIN. June 8 to July 2, 1980. Spend three and one-half weeks in Castile and Leon. Lt L ’ The tour begins with a week in Madrid, followed by a guided tour of Castile from Toledo in the south to Burgos in the north. Visits are scheduled to the Escorial, the Valley of the Fallen, Avila, Salamanca, Tordesillas, Simancas, Burgos, Santo Domingo de Silos, Segovia, Toledo, and Aranjuez. Through an exploration of Castile's art, customs, countryside and cuisine, there will come a familiarity with the past and present of Spain's varied and fascinating heartland. Led by Professor Farris Anderson of the Department of Romance Languages and Ms. Laurie Jackson. THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. June 18 to July 11, 1980. The tour of the People's Republic of China this summer will comprise five cities: Beijing (Peking), Beidaihe, Shanghai, Jinan, and Guangzhou (Canton). The itinerary includes three days of orientation in Tokyo, eighteen days in China, and a day and a half of relaxation in Hong^Kong. Led by Professor Stevan Harrell of East Asian Studies and Anthropology, who is fluent in Chinese and will serve as intermediary and interpreter on the tour. THE AUSTRIAN S BAVARIAN ALPS. July 24 to August 9, 1980. The principal focus of this tour is attendance at an event that occurs only ten tines each century: the Passion Play at Oberararergau, as well as two musical/dramatic works at the annual Salzburg Festival. Apart from performances, four days are planned in Munich and seven days in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps with visits to all of King Ludwig's royal castles. Led by Dean Richard Lorenzen of the College of Arts S Sciences and Professor of Drama, and by Ms. Therese Barnette. 1HE N0R1H OF ENGLAND. August 25 to September 18, 1980. A tour of the English Lakes District, York and the Yorkshire Dales, Durham and Northumbria. For lovers of English literature, visits to the sites of Jane Eyre, fa th erin g H eights, P ete r R abbit, Tristram Shandy, The Prelude, the border ballads, and Sir Walter Scott's novels. Numbers of walks, as well as coach tours, have been scheduled to permit the greatest and most leisurely enjoyment of northern England. Led by Professor Grant Hildebrand of the Department of Architecture and Mr. Robert Goodwin, a coastal management specialist and a Yorkshireman by birth. HUMANITIES 200, ANGLO-IRISH CIVILIZATION A 15 credit Humanities course on Anglo-Irish Civilization is being offered from June 30-August 1. This Fourth Annual Course includes a five-day orientation tour of the west of Ireland, two weeks of lectures and field trips in the Dublin area with residence at Trinity College halls of residence. This same format is used in London. The course is $1645 (excluding air fare) and includes tuition, lodgings, most meals, and travel and entertainment in Ireland and England. Professor Amy d’Ernee Mates is the course director. She has been at Shoreline Community College since the opening of the college, is a member of the Humanities Division where she teaches English literature and English as a Second Language. GERMAN STUDY ABROAD 100/290 The second summer study program in Germany will be offered from June 17-July 19 in Munich and Berlin with students earning 15 credits while learning the language (at the beginning or intermediate level) and studying German civilization and culture. The program includes lectures, field trips, concerts, opera, theater, and festivals. An intensive study of Berlin will be followed by a walk through the Wall to tour East Berlin. The cost of the program is $1380 (excluding air fare) to Frankfurt. The program director is Mrs. Marilyn Rabura, who has taught German at Shoreline since its opening in 1964. ANTHROPOLOGY 280, KENYA: AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE Anthropology 280 is a 15 credit course which includes a four week lecture-tour of Kenya, East Africa, June 30-Aug. 1, preceeded by two weeks of orientation lectures on campus. The course is an intensive study of the present day people, archaeology and government of Kenya. The field school will be on SAFARI in the interior for 15 days visiting Koobi Fora, R. Leakey’s new archaeological site and meeting pastoral nomadic peoples. The class will also tour the Leakey and the African Institutes in Nairobi and stay in Swahili towns on the Coast visiting museums, sites, and meeting the people. The cost of the program is $1759 (excluding air fare). This includes tuition, full board on safari, bed and breakfast in town, all land transport, and lectures and entrance fees. Professor Sonja O. The criteria by which The Seattle International Film Festival Selection Committee chooses the film for the g ala opening of the Festival has evolved through the years. Like any group of people charged with the fuel of trying to spell out its reasons for being a group, particularly in the creative arts, we stand or fall on our ability to provide something truly sp ecial: in our case that means presenting Seattle with a showcase of the finest films a vailab le from all over the world. For Opening Night we reserve the brightest and the best. . . and that can mean anything from the delightfully witty and wise "A Little Romanbe" which opened last year's festival, to the trium phant and touching Academ y Award Winner, "M adam e Rosa," opening night film of the 1978 festival. This year we have chosen a film befitting all that follows in this year's Festival. From Australia, "The Getting of Wisdom" is director Bruce Beresford's vibrant, m em orable period piece adapted from a classic Australian novel about the exquisite torture of growing up. A young, musical prodigy from the backwoods, streetwise in her w ay, arrives am id the pomp and pretensions of Australia's most exclusive girls' school. The film is alive with the sam e kind of astonishing and unexpected brilliance that m ade last year's "Picnic at Hanging Rock" such a satisfying success. Director Geissendorfer seems to have been born to fuse his taut, cool eye with the tense, intricate style of Patricia Highsmith's novel, on which the film is based. A respectable architect seeks desperately to clear himself of crim inal charges for which he is innocent, but matters are not helped by the fact that his lawyer is his wife's lover and so not exactly con cerned about proving his client's innocence.

Writer-director de Broca has alread y established his special wizardry in film after film: the com ic plots in which the hero is endlessly getting in and out of an accelerating whirlwind of trouble. More than any other filmmaker, de Broca has validated the substantial pleasures of the classic romantic adventure story. In "L'lncorrigible," de Broca's favorite actor, Belmondo, plays the incorrigible of the title, a compulsive flim-flam man with a par ticular penchant for profitably selling objects and property that don't belong to him—apartm ents, boats, paintings, even a chateau. He continues his scam s even though he has been jailed for some of them. He falls in love with his probationary officer (Bujold), and the two plan the biggest escap ad e of a ll—the theft and sale of an El Greco triptych. "L'lncorrigible" is thrilling and funny in all the best ways we have com e to expect from the
director of "King of Hearts," "Le M agnifique," and "That Man From Rio."

"The Lady Vanishes," Rank Organization's remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 thriller, has all the ingredients of a great entertainment: it has Hitchcock's formula for suspense, an updated screenplay by George Axelrod ("Breakfast at Tiffany's"), a cast which includes such sterling pros as Angela Lansbury, Elliott Gould, Ian C ar m ichael, Herbert Lorn and Arthur Lowe, and slick direction from Anthony Page ("I Never Promised You a Rose G arden"). Adapted from an Ethel Lina White novel ("The Wheel Spins"), the film follows the exploits of Am anda Kelly, a ‘much m arried, m adcap Am erican heiress' (Cybill Shep herd), who boards the trans-European express and is befriended by an English nanny (Lansbury) who quite literally disappears while Miss Kelly is taking a nap. The film evolves into a funny, harrowing and very real journey through the maze of standard hospital procedures and routines, which turn the patients into unwitting pin cushions with no knowledge of their condition: the patient is alw ays the last to know. The farm er is moved to a semi-private room with a young man who is in the sam e situation, and it is here that the film takes on the shadings of a Kafkaesque black com edy. Here, among the impoverished and the dispossessed, through observation and ultimately participation, he acquires both a profound selfknowledge and an understanding of the basis of Fascism in human nature. Rosi's legendary dual talents, his cap acity for inquiry and his rich visual sense, are both in m agical abundance in this film. There is superb ensemble-work by both the leading players and the rustic am ateurs facing the cam era for the first time.

Perhaps the most famous of all unfinished films, this 1931-32 masterwork was conceived and directed by Eisenstein, and financed by writer Up ton Sinclair. The two quarreled, however, and Sin clair confiscated the 285,000 feet of film Eisen stein had shot. Several attempts to patch a coherent narrative out of this footage have been attem pted, but the attempts can only be described as noble failures. After nearly 50 years, the film has been reconstructed according to Eisenstein's original plan by his old collaborator, Grigory Aleksandrov. The result is the final flash of brilliance from a film director who can be easily credited with much of the present gram m ar of the film-making process. Eisenstein didn't just m ake movies: He breathed life into essentially static im ages. The subject of "Q ue Viva M exico" is the young, courageous and freedom-loving M exican nation, rendered in a series of colorful and evocative vignettes.

Demoralized by the cold clim ate, ur ban bustle, and loose morals of New York, and waging an eternal struggle with a boiler that seldom works, Roberto dream s of returning to C ub a—or at least Miami, where it doesn't snow. "El Super" is an important film because it explores a vital segment of reality (Hispanic em igre culture) previously untouched by the cam era, and it is a very funny work, with a low-key, quietly desperate wit that sneaks up on you—a bit like Jules Feiffer's “con salsa."

At the peak of success, a respected journalist speaks out too freely during a television interview, and, suddenly, his privileged, protected position is threatened: His wife leaves him, he is stripped of his duties, and even his admirers urge him to resign. He battles to find if his security wasn't just a sham from the start, and the ending reiterates and extends the political precepts established in W ajda's earlier "M an of M arble"—to which this film is a spiritual sequel. "Rough Treatment" is an a ct of courage, as was "M an of M arble," because although it is the work of one of the world's greatest filmmakers, it was m ade under a political administration that is the real counterpart to the fictional system that destroys the film's hero.

Marie-Christine Barrault ("Cousin, Cousine") plays Lieve, who marries A driaan, a Flemish Nationalist, shortly before the Germ an invasion. Adriaan, a thinly veiled anti-Communist who is convinced Hitler will give autonomy to Flanders, joins the Germ an army soon after the invasion, and is sent to the Eastern Front. During the ensuing w ar, Lieve gives sanctuary to Francois, an officer in the Resistance, and thus begins a transformation of
her ideals and alleg iances. These are quickly put to the test when her husband returns at the end of the w ar, and is jailed for collaboration with the enemy. This sparks the basis for a moving story of one woman's em ergence into selfhood that is universally a p p licab le and affecting.

A hit at both the recent London and Telluride Film Festivals, this is a film rich in com ic absurdity, with inimitable Heilman touches.

tone, as in all Verhoeven's work, is unboundingly passionate and zestful. One has simply to look at a single still from the film to realize that Verhoeven has a gift for the sensuously tactile that few film makers have ever had. The plot of "Spetters" cen ters around three young men obsessed with motor cycles and the exhilarating speed they provide. The film's title is colloquial for 'hot shots,' which is the way the three protagonists see themselves. Enamored as they are of bikes, however, they cannot and do not ignore more basic drives, and the film becom es a record of their sexual awakenings and achievem ents as well. THE STUNT MAN It would be a major betrayal to end a Festival containing as much potent accom plishm ent as ours with a tam e, minor work: We'd rather p ack a wallop than a whimper, and no finer fruition of our intentions could be more perfectly realized than Richard Rush's "The Stunt M an," a superbly effec tive new film by a young veteran in the medium. William Arnold, Seattle-PI film critic and author of the brilliant Frances Farmer biography, "Shadow land," described the film as "an affir mation of hope for an exciting new Am erican cinem a in the 1980s." The highest praise possible and, as you'll find on seeing the film, praise com pletely justified. John Hartl, critic for The Seattle Times, also saw the film and interviewed its maker. What follows is his report of these two encounters. We just couldn't say it better! Richard Rush finds himself in a bind. He's finished his movie, "The Stunt M an": a witty, daring, mar velously energetic entertainment about a movie director (Peter O'Toole) who m ay or may not be trying to kill a fugitive he's hired as a stunt man (Steve Railsback). The film, based on a novel by Paul Brodeur, is O'Toole's best work in more than a d ecad e, and potentially a very com m ercial film. But Rush finished shooting the $5-million produc tion in April, 1978, com pleted the editing in January, 1979, and it still hasn't gone into release. The d elay has taken a personal toll on Rush, who had a heart attack late last year. He estimates that at present interest rates, the film's budget has gone up about $ 1 million in one year. Still, he thinks it's a bargain; if it had been filmed at a major studio, it would have cost $ 12 million. Such delays and troubles with timing have plagued Rush's career. His 1970 studentrevolution movie, "Getting Straight," was the most entertaining of a sorry lot. Ingmar Bergman liked it so much that he hired its star, Elliott Gould, for his next film, "The Touch." But it was released the week of the Kent State killings, and reviewers were merciless toward its satirical attitudes about college life. "Getting Straight" was enough of a box-office hit to encourage its studio, Colum bia Pictures, to start developing "The Stunt M an" in 1971. Soon after w ard, Colum bia's debt soared to $120 million in one year, and executives dropped "The Stunt Man" as too risky a property. Rush held onto it, while other directors who adm ired the book used elements of it in their films. "Truffaut loved it and worked some of it into 'Day for Night,' and Arthur Penn did the sam e when he m ade 'Night M oves,'" said Rush. "Three years ago there was an exploitation picture (called 'Who Is Killing the Stunt Men?' on TV) and the makers of 'Hoooper' tried to use the title."
M eanwhile, Rush was venting his frustrations by directing a com edy with plenty of stunt work, "Freebie and the Bean," starring Jam es C aan ("W arner Bros, had to use him quickly in one picture before his contract ran out") and Alan Arkin. "Freebie" was Rush's most popular film, grossing $50 million. Its admirers include Stanley Kubrick and Peter O'Toole. The latter signed for "The Stunt M an" immediately after he met Rush at a party and discovered he'd m ade "Freebie." In spite of his problems in getting projects off the ground, Rush's movies have nearly alw ays been both innovative and com m ercial. "They used to ca ll me the best of the $2 hookers," Rush said. "I would m ake exploitation films and put in all the action they wanted, on-budget, just so long as they'd leave me alone to experim ent." His first film, "Too Soon to Love," produced in 1960 for $50,000, was hailed as "the first Am erican New W ave film ." He went to Mexico to direct Merle Oberon in "Of Love and Desire," a glossy soap opera that cost $300,000 and was sold to 20th Century-Fox for $ 1 million. Then cam e a series of biker films that introduced him to Ja c k Nicholson and Bruce Dern, including "Hell's Angels on Wheels" and "Thunder Alley." Rush was attracted to "The Stunt Man" because it offered an opportunity to com bine his flair for a c tion with "an allegorical story about controlling destiny. It's an existential novel about illusion and reality, and the studios were scared to death to do it. It's about Vietnam tangentially—which of course was taboo in the early 1970s—and there's always been a Hollywood shibboleth about movies that deal with making movies." Rush felt he could m ake a com m ercial film of it because "I love Proust and I love com ic books, and I like doing things that can function on several levels." —John Hartl, The Seattle Times

Audaciously, Syberberg battles the nightmare with its own weapons, the weapons of irrationality, of the unconscious, of the hidden drives that triggered the cosm ic blasphemy of the Hitlerian dream . Not a docum entary, “Our Hitler" is an ep ic voyage into the true heart of darkness of the twentieth century. In the West, the 44-year-old Syberberg is the least known of the directors who m ake up the so-called New Germ an cinem a—Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders and others. But on the evidence of “ Our Hitler," he is the largest, the most original and most daring sensibility of them all. In four parts and 22 "chapters," he attempts not to "explain" Hitler with facts, dates, politics and ideology, but to locate him in the collective psyche of our time. Shot in only twenty days at a budget of $500,000, the film is a vast cinem atic collag e of docum entary footage, puppets, man nequins, recorded speeches. Hitler's favorite music from W agner to Lehar, and a brilliant cast that through a d evice called front projection is ab le seemingly to walk through, into and out of im ages of the Third Reich. All of this is held together by Syberberg's own script, which all by itself is a daunting, unsettling masterwork, quite likely the most astonishing feat of pure writing in film history. "Our Hitler" starts off as a circus, with a cosm ic ringmaster summoning Hitler as Charlie Chaplin, Hitler as Hamlet meditating on a skull marked "Jew ," Hitler as Napoleon, his hand tucked in his fly instead of his w aistcoat. Hitler as the failed ar tist that he was. It's the esthetic approach to Hitler that has bothered many of the film's European critics. But Hitler has thus far eluded all psychological and political analyses. He syn thesized so many forces that he must be tracked back through all those forces, and the nam e for this process is art. Dark Dreams: Syberberg shows Hitler turning his country into "a total work of art called Germ any," but a work of art that converted the dream s of German romanticism into lethal kitsch and trash.
Using all the techniques of mass culture. Hitler turned his people into puppets. Syberberg rever ses this process and shows Hitler himself in the guise of many different puppets, implying that Hitler was really obeying the secret voice of the people whose dark dream s he brought to life. In a fantastic, powerful scene, we see one of these puppet-Hitlers as a ventriloquist's dummy, m anipulated by one of the film's splendid actors, Harry Baer. While Baer divests the puppet of layer after layer of Nazi uniforms and costumes, this in fernal C harlie M cCarthy, his eyes whipping m adly in their sockets, proclaim s his testament of evil: "I am immortal as long as the world exists." There are many other dazzling and disturbing set pieces throughout the film. In one, we meet the embodiment of the banality of evil. Hitler's valet, Krause, played with transcendent servility by Hellmut Lange. For the better part of an hour Krause regales us with the details of Hitler's domestic life—his morning toilet, his breakfast of two cups of warm milk, ten biscuits and broken-up bitter chocolate, which he ate standing up; his shabby, ill-fitting suits, which poor Krause tried so hard to upgrade; his nightshirt; his suspenders—a mock Homeric litany of trivia that only intensifies the apocalyptic horror that Hitler wrought. In another sequence we see Heinz Schubert as Heinrich Himmler, delivering a chilling justification of his murderous career while he's being worked on by his masseur. Here Syberberg evokes the perverse sexuality of Nazism as Himmler writhes beneath the masseur's ministrations while speaking of the Jews as "subhum an" and insisting that the work of genocide was a more difficult or deal for the murderers than for their victims. In another episode Heinz Schubert becom es Hitler, garbed in a Roman toga, rising from the grave of Richard W agner. In a long, astounding speech he justifies himself as a tool of his subjects, insisting, "I m ade a cruel cleanup in the pigsty of history which they all secretly wa nt e d. . . PAUL V ER H O EV EN : A TRIBUTE In 1974, a feature by a young Dutch filmmaker hit select Am erican screens in Seattle, San Fran cisco and Los Angeles with an im pact that left its audiences reeling with the sure recognition that its director, Paul Verhoeven, was destined for greatness. The film was "Turkish Delight." Two years later, Verhoeven fulfilled his expected promise beyond everybody's wildest expec tations. O nce more team ing Monique Van De Ven and Rutger Hauer, the stars of his earlier film, he m ade "Kathy Tippel," now universally recognized as one of the definitive screenportraits of women. His third film, "Soldier of O range" (1978), is alread y legend, a phenomenon, the kind of ambitious masterwork few filmmakers can conceive, let alone execute, even after d ecad es of inspired dedication to their trade. And Verhoeven is only 41 years old. It was Seattle film -audiences that first secured and established Verhoeven's Am erican reputation, most notably with the Am erican prem iere of "Soldier of O range" in the Third Seattle Inter national Film Festival. It is in acknowledgem ent to Seattle's appreciation of his work that Paul Verhoeven has agreed to the Am erican premiere of his latest film, "Spetters," on Friday, May 30, at 9:30 p.m. He is also coming from the Netherlands to attend the screening, and discuss his work with the audience. "Spetters" has caused a huge con troversy in Europe, and Am erican interest in it is keen and growing. (For a synopsis of the film, look under the appropriate date elsewhere in this catalogue.) On three Saturdays through the Festival, we will be screening "Turkish Delight," “ Kathy Tippel" and "Soldier of O range" as a bonus to our festival-goers: admission will be FREE to all these showings. ——

It is this resiliency, this sheer appetite for life, that is another trait of Verhoeven's heroes and heroines and what compounds their special ap p eal to us. We share their voraciousness, their heady immersion into sensuality as valid physical release, and their audacious inventiveness in getting out of trouble. "Kathy Tipple" is, of course, Monique Van De Ven's luminous central perform ance. Few faces have been as loved by the cam era, and few per sonifications been as robustly full-bodied. One leaves the theater in total, ecstatic enslavement to her.

What makes "Soldier of O range" such a resounding, perfectly realized work is its narrative force, the Herculean strength of simply telling a story well, with wit, warmth, and an impassioned cam era style.
