MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR When I was appointed as the new Festival Director for Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) last year, one of the central tenets of the curation process we put in place was to present work by game-changing artists.

From the outset of my three-year tenure, it was important to me that SIFA challenges audiences intellectually, emotionally and artistically, allowing them to experience works they would not normally have a chance to see in Singapore.

Last year, I found myself huddled amid the sand dunes and pine forests of Terschelling Island off the north coast of The Netherlands, to watch Bedtime Stories, a brilliant one-man show which we are bringing to SIFA this year.

It reminds us that powerful stories can be told with the simplest of tools - in this case, the actor’s voice. Or through elaborate work such as the cross-cultural, multi-faceted Dionysus

by Tadashi Suzuki. Game-changing artists and work exist everywhere – it is our mission to find them and bring them to you.

This season, SIFA 2019 is proud to present provocative and challenging works by artists from Singapore and abroad. Our local Festival commissions explore contemporary issues and daringly bring to the spotlight lesser-known facets of Asian history and culture. Toy Factory will realise its innovative re-interpretation of a beloved Ming play. Checkpoint Theatre delves into the realities of the humanitarian aid industry, while Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen investigates some of Southeast Asia’s most shadowy historical figures.

On the international front, SIFA is delighted to welcome to our shores works by worldrenowned theatre directors Tadashi Suzuki and Simon McBurney, legendary musicians Ryuichi Sakamoto and Bill Frisell, and groundbreaking choreographers Gisèle Vienne and Sasha Waltz.

SIFA 2019 audiences can also expect to see a greater range of multidisciplinary work that defies easy classification, from pushing boundaries between theatre and dance in ST/LL by Japanese artist Shiro Takatani, to the use of virtual reality and binaural sound in Frogman by UK company curious directive.

SIFA will also present Silo Theatre’s Peter and the Wolf for families, as well as free outdoor performances in non-traditional venues for audiences of all ages.

Festival House will be back this year, as the epicentre of SIFA 2019. Here, audiences and artistes can extend their engagement with the Festival beyond the performance, as well as engage with each other, through a range of talks, workshops and master-classes to delve deeper into the themes and perspectives of each show.

SIFA 2019 would not have been possible without the support of CEO Sarah Martin; our three extraordinary producers – Junmin, Rydwan and Sara; and the phenomenal team at Arts House Limited. I would like to thank each of them for their dedication and passion.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO What does the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) mean to you? A doorway to the world’s performances out there? An escape from the routine of everyday life?

An opportunity to indulge your curiosity? Or something more?

It would not be unusual for each of you to take away something different from the Festival.

When I look back at my years attending the Festival, what stands out in my memory are thrilling moments of discovering a work or artist that slowly built my own love for festival making.

In everything we do, SIFA brings audiences and artists on a personal journey, creating a shared experience across different touch-points with a wider community of art lovers, international and local artists.

Every edition of the Festival is also unique and contributes to the development of Singapore’s cultural landscape. 2018 was an encouraging year, with SIFA seeing heartening growth in the number of new – and especially – younger audiences. I believe this is a testament to the success of Festival Director Gaurav Kripalani’s balanced curatorial approach, emphasising diverse works with multiple levels of accessibility.

In 2019, the 42nd Singapore International Festival of the Arts will continue to enrich the spectrum of audience experiences with a diversity of artistic genres and innovative platforms. Over 17 days, SIFA will showcase a spectrum of world-class performances by game-changing artists, alongside a range of distinctive multi-disciplinary works.

As one of the cultural peaks of Singapore’s arts calendar, the Festival will allow audiences to engage with a fascinating range of contemporary issues and create avenues for critical dialogue. The Arts House will once again transform into our Festival House, a unique gathering point to share ideas and viewpoints and to engage with the artists on a more intimate level.

Working behind the scenes at SIFA are many passionate individuals who have been critical to the Festival’s success over the years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has played their part in shaping SIFA, and to Gaurav for leading the Festival to new artistic heights.

I hope you leave this year with a fresh perspective of what the Festival means to you, and with wonderful memories of your own personal discoveries.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Young soldier Hofmiller is invited to Baron Kekesfalva’s castle. The soiree is a success: Hofmiller manages to entertain with one amusing anecdote after another. Inebriated by his accomplishment, he asks Edith, the host’s daughter, for a dance. But Edith blanches. Hofmiller recognises he has committed a faux pas, but only when the girl’s cousin explains that Edith is paralysed does he comprehend the extent of his offence and flees the castle. The following morning he sends flowers and Edith retaliates with an invitation to tea. Soon, Hofmiller is a daily guest at the castle, not noticing that the mentally fragile Edith has fallen desperately in love with him. When Hofmiller understands the truth, he proposes marriage, but once Edith realises that this has only happened out of pity, her initial delight mutates into a despairing rage...

Beware of Pity deals with the question of what is true compassion and how difficult it is to sincerely suffer vicariously with another human being. Simon McBurney is an actor, director and co-founder of legendary British theatre company Complicité. For his stage version of Beware of Pity, McBurney is working with a German theatre ensemble for the first time.

BIOGRAPHIES MARIE BURCHARD Marie Burchard was born in Bonn in 1982. She has been a member of the Schaubühne ensemble since 2015. She studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art Berlin.

From 2008 to 2010, she was engaged at the Nationaltheater Weimar, where she worked with director Andrea Breth and appeared in roles such as Dunja in Crime and Punishment, Eve in The Broken Jug, Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as in Marija . She has also worked on several films including The Last Lie and The Book Thief. Her latest work for the Schaubühne includes A Piece of Plastic, Westberlin, Beware of Pity and Wallenstein.

ROBERT BEYER Robert Beyer was born in Rostock in 1969. He has been a member of the Schaubühne ensemble since 1999. From 1992 to 1996, he studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art Berlin. In 1996, he acted in a number of productions including The Unknown Woman, Gewisse Anzahl Gesprache, and Spring Awakening. From 1996 to 1999, he was engaged at the Schauspielhaus Dusseldorf where he played Mortimer in Maria Stuart, Johannes in Salome and Crampas in Effi Briest. In 1999, he performed at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg as Kurt in Fireface. He has also appeared in numerous television and film roles, including The Baader Meinhof Complexe, Miss Stinnes Motors Round the World, Between the Lines – Tote HabenKkeinen Hunger, The Book Thief, Pinocchio, Alles muss raus - Eine Familie rechnet ab and bestefreunde. His work at the Schaubühne includes Hamlet, The Marriage of Maria Braun, Richard Ill, A Piece of Plastic, Westberlin, Beware of Pity and Professor Bernhardi.

JOHANNES FLASCHBERGER Johannes Flaschberger was born in 1952 in Hermagor. He has trained in Mime at the Ecole Internationale de Mimodrame and at the lnstitut del Teatre and also in drama with Philippe Gaulier. He has regularly collaborated with Complicité since 1993 where he was involved in The Three Lives, Mnemonic, Measure for Measure, A Dog’s Heart and The Master and Margarita. He toured England with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Othello as well as appeared in Red Demon Akaoni at the Young Vic in London and at the Theater Bunkamura in Tokyo. In London, he has also performed at the Alberty Theatre (Shockheaded Peter), the National Theatre (Mother Courage and Her Children) and the Arcola Theatre (Reclining Nude with Black Stockings). He was recently a guest actor in Die versunkene Kathedrale and Tales from the Vienna Woods. His film credits include Der Bulle van Tolz, Ludwig van B. - Meine unsterbliche Geliebte and Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason.

His work at the Schaubühne includes Beware of Pity and Professor Bernhardi.

CHRISTOPH GAWENDA Christoph Gawenda was born in 1979. He has been a member of the Schaubühne ensemble since 2010. He studied acting from 2001 to 2005 at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Hannover. After his studies, he was engaged at the Staatsschauspiel Stuttgart and worked with directors such as Friederike Heller, Volker Losch, Michael Thalheimer, Hasko Weber, Thomas Dannemann and Arpad Schilling. His film credits include If Not Us, Who?, Stalingrad, Meeres Stille and Auf einmal. He also worked on the audio book production of Die hohle Nadel oder der Schatz der Konige Frankreichs. In 2007, he received the Kunstforderpreis of the city Neuss. His work at the Schaubühne includes An Enemy of The People, Fear Eats Germany, Richard III, The Lower Depts, Beware of Pity and Professor Bernhardi.

MORITZ GOTTWALD Moritz Gottwald was born in Halle in 1988. He has been a member of the Schaubühne ensemble since 2011. He studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art Berlin. His productions include Ander Saale hell gestrandet. Ein Heimatsti. ick and Exit at the Neues Theater Halle and hamlet ist tot. keine schwerkraft and Parasites at Deutsches Theater Berlin. His work at the Schaubühne includes An Enemy of The People, The Little Foxes, The Marriage of Maria Braun, Richard Ill, Beware of Pity and Professor Bernhardi.

LAURENZ LAUFENBERG Laurenz Laufenberg was born in Cologne in 1990. He has been a member of the Schaubühne ensemble since 2014. From 2009 to 2013, he studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. His first productions include Spring Awakening at the Theater in der Josefstadt Wien and In euren Augen at the Korber Studio Junge Regie Hamburg. From 2013 to 2014, he was a member of the ensemble at the Schauspielhaus Graz where he appeared in Thalerhof, Orphans, Woodcutters, Das Ballhaus, Le Bal and Ivanov by Anton Chekhov. He has participated in the short film Liebemacht as well as in several radio productions for the ORF and Deutschlandradio Kultur.

His work at the Schaubühne includes Richard III, A Piece of Plastic, thisisitgirl, Beware of Pity, Wallenstein and Professor Bernhardi.

EVA MECKBACH Eva Meckbach was born in Seeheim-Jugenheim/Hessen in 1981. She has been a member of the Schaubühne ensemble since 2006. From 2003 to 2006, she studied acting at the University of the Arts Berlin. She has also worked on audio books and radio productions. She has also appeared in different cinema and TV productions such as Home for the Weekend, Der Kriminalist - Mitten ins Herz and Tatort - Der Maulwurf. She received the award for best actress at the international theatre festival Stettin in 2012 for the role of Erika Roth in Martyr. His work at the Schaubühne includes Demons, An Enemy of the People, Fear Eats Germany, The Lower Depts, Beware of Pity and Professor Bernhardi.

SIMON MCBURNEY Director Simon McBurney is an actor, writer, director and co-founder of Complicité.

He has created and acted in more than 30 productions and the company has won over fifty major theatre awards worldwide. His recent directing works for Complicité include The Encounter, The Master and Margarita, The Magic Flute, A Dog’s Heart, Shun-kin, A Disappearing Number, A Minute Too Late, Measure for Measure, The Elephant Vanishes, Pet Shop Boys Meet Eisenstein and Strange Poetry with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. His other directing credits include All My Sons and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. In 2012 he was the first British Artist Associate of the Avignon Festival in 2012 and his adaptation of Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita was the festival’s centrepiece. In 2009, Shun-kin earned him the Yomiuri Theatre Award Grand Prize for Best Director and he was the recipient of the 2008 Berlin Academy of Arts Konrad Wolf Prize for Europe’s Outstanding Multi-disciplinary Artists. As an actor he has appeared in many feature films including Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, The Theory of Everything, Magic in the Moonlight, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Jane Eyre, The Duchess and The Last King of Scotland.

His work at the Schaubühne includes Amazon Beaming and Beware of Pity.

JAMES YEATMAN Co-Director

James Yeatman was co-director for Lionboy and Associate Director for The Master and Margarita at Complicité and Chimerica at the Harold Pinter Theatre. He has written and directed Dog Show at the New Diorama Theatre London as well as directed Radio at 59E59 Theatres in New York and Limehouse Nights at the Limehouse Town Hall in London.

As an assistant director, he has worked on Posh at Royal Court Theatre, A Delicate Balance at the Almeida Theatre and Double Fear at the National Theatre. His work at the Schaubühne includes Beware of Pity.

ANNA FLEISCHLE Stage Designer

Anna Fleischle was born in Munich. She studied theatre design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London and currently works as a stage and costume designer. She has designed for Sacrifice at the Royal Shakespeare Company, Liberian Girl at the Royal Court Theatre, John at the National Theatre, Before the Party at the Almeida Theatre, Love the Sinner at the National Theatre, As You Like It at the Curve Theatre, Love and Money at the Royal Exchange and the Young Vic, King Priam and Paul Bunyan at the English Touring Opera,

Candide at the Opera National de Lorraine and Can We Talk About This at the National Theatre and on the international tour circuit. She received the Evening Standard Award for Best Design for Hangmen and the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera in 2014 for King Priam and Paul Bunyan.

Her work at the Schaubühne includes Beware of Pity.

HOLLY WADDINGTON Costume Designer

Holly Waddington studied Fine Arts at the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford University and Scenography at Trinity Laban in London. She was one of the finalists of the Linbury Prize for Theatre Design in 2007. She has designed set and costumes for Gate Theatre, The Young Vic, the Almeida (with Belarus Free Theatre), the Scottish Dance Theatre, Sadler’s Wells and the Handspring Puppet Company. As a costume designer, she has designed for the Royal Ballet (for Hofesh Shechter), the Almeida, the Royal Court and for the Lost Dog/Ben Duk In film, she has designed costumes for Ginger & Rosa, Departure and Lady Macbeth. As assistant costume designer, her film credits include Happy-Go-Lucky, Another Year, War Horse, Lincoln and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Her work at the Schaubühne includes Beware of Pity.

PAUL ANDERSON Lighting Designer

Paul Anderson studied at the Mountview Theatre School and at York College of Arts and Technology. He has designed the lighting concept for several British and international productions at the National Theatre, the English National Opera, the Young Vic Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the West End as well as on Broadway. Paul has been collaborating with Complicité since 1984, on productions such as A Dog’s Heart, The Master and Margarita, A Disappearing Number and Shun-Kin. He was awarded the Olivier Award for Best Lighting Designer for The Master and Margarita (2012) and received the Drama Desk Award as well as the Lucille Lortell Award for Mnemonic (1999). His work at the Schaubühne includes Beware of Pity.

PETE MALKIN Sound Designer

Pete Malin studied at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and currently works as a freelance sound designer. He has worked as a Sound Associate on Complicité’s productions including The Master and Margarita, The Magic Flute and Lionboy and as sound designer with Gareth Fry for The Encounter. He was an Associate Sound Designer on Hamlet at the RSC, 1984 and Rock Pool for Inspector Sands, as well as an assistant soundscape designer for the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony. His work at the Schaubühne includes Beware of Pity.

BENJAMIN GRANT Sound Associate

Benjamin Grant studied at the Royal Centre School of Speech and Drama and has designed for theatre, dance and installation. He has recently assisted Gareth Fry on Nuffield Theatre’s adaptation of The Hudsucker Proxy and worked on Acheulian Theatre’s Unmasked as part of the Deptford X Festival. His work at the Schaubühne includes Beware of Pity.

WILL DUKE Video Designer

Will Duke studied Fine Arts and Arts History at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art followed by Fine Arts at the Glasgow School of Art. He has been a video designer for contemporary dance and theatre since 2009, including The Rain Parade with the Lost Dog Dance Group, Discombobulator: Dance Umbrella, Purcell Rooms, as well as The Difference Engine at the Gate Theatre.

His other video works include Where Have I Been All My Life at New Vic Theatre, Of Mice and Men at the Watermill Theatre, Hitchcock Blonde at the Hull Truck Theatre, Above Me The Wide Blue Sky and Dusk at the Young Vic, Landscape II at the Dublin Fringe Festival, Mountaineering at The Roundhouse, The Encounter at the Edinburgh International Festival and Queen Anne at the Royal Shakespeare Company. His work at the Schaubühne includes Beware of Pity.

MAJA ZADE Dramaturg

Maje Zade was raised in Germany and Sweden. Since 1999, she has been working as a dramaturg at the Schaubühne Berlin. She studied English Literature at London University and Queen’s University in Canada. Maje has worked on theatre productions at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. From 1997 to 1999, she was a Senior Reader at the Royal Court Theatre in London. She has been translating various plays into German by Lars von Trier and Caryl Churchill and into English by Marius von Mayenburg, Roland Schimmelpfennig, Lars Noren and Falk Richter. Her work at the Schaubühne includes Westberlin, Beware of Pity, A Piece of Plastic, The Invention of the Red Army Faction by a Manic-depressive Teenager in the Summer of 1969 and The Imaginary Invalid.

SCHAUBÜHNE CONTEMPORARY- URBAN - INTERNATIONAL The Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz was founded in 1962. Since 1999 it has been led by artistic director Thomas Ostermeier. The foundation of his tenure was laid in the formation of a new ensemble of permanently employed actors, who essentially have been working together ever since, and regularly extended by new appointments. The Schaubühne premieres a minimum of ten shows per season alongside a repertoire of over 30 existing productions.

Starting from the concept of an ensemble theatre, the actors, dramatic characters and situations of a play take centre stage at the Schaubühne. One of the theatre’s distinctive features is a stylistic variety in approaches to directing, which includes new forms of dance and musical theatre. The search for a contemporary and experimental theatre language which focuses upon storytelling and a precise understanding of texts – both classical and contemporary – is a unifying element. The repertoire encompasses the great dramatic works of world literature alongside contemporary plays from internationally renowned writers which, with over 90 world and German premieres during the past 17 years, has been a key component of the theatre’s work.

The search for new dramatic forms has benefited from a lively international exchange which has regularly brought the Schaubühne and its ensemble into close contact with other theatrical traditions. Alongside directors from Berlin such as Thomas Ostermeier, Michael Thalheimer, Armin Petras, Patrick Wengenroth, as well as Falk Richter and Marius van Mayenburg – who also work as playwrights at the Schaubühne – the theatre frequently offers a platform in Berlin to notable directors from abroad. Currently productions by Romeo Castellucci, Simon McBurney, Katie Mitchell, Rodrigo Garcfa, Milo Rau and Yael Ronen are being shown at the theatre. At the same time, the Schaubühne showcases its productions abroad in over 100 performances every year: whether at big international theatre festivals like the Festival d’Avignon, the Salzburg Festival, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, the Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires (FIBA) and the Territorija Festival in Moscow; or as guest performances at theatres around the world including in New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Quebec, Sao Paulo, London, Moscow, Oslo, Ramallah, Melbourne, Ottawa, Taipei, Tel Aviv, Seoul, Rennes, Barcelona, Adelaide, Tokyo, Prague, Sydney and Montreal.

Every spring since 2000 the Festival of International New Drama (FIND) has given internationally renowned theatre makers the opportunity to show their work at the Schaubühne..The recent focus has been upon writer-theatre makers who write and direct their own work or substantially develop existing dramatic material. Since 2011 FIND has been complemented by the FIND plus workshop programme which is a forum for acting, directing and dramaturgy students from several European countries.

ABOUT SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ARTS As Singapore’s annual pinnacle arts festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) presents captivating and diverse works across theatre, music, dance, film and visual arts. First launched as the Singapore Festival of Arts in 1977, the festival has gone through several evolutions and inspired generations of arts lovers and practitioners.
