MESSAGE FROM THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR The world has changed dramatically in the last year. This is an extraordinary time for artists, where we have been asking ourselves: how can we still bring you great art and recreate the magic of the live experience? This is an enormous challenge, one which requires creativity, boldness and determination. With over 60 productions and over 300 performances, SIFA 2021 has been curated as a direct response to the here and now. It is a response to the care and compassion we need for ourselves, our community and our environment. It features exceptional artistes and companies who have learnt to adapt and present work that can reach audiences around the world, using a variety of technologies. And it will feature a record number of Singaporean commissions and collaborations. Besides shows that will take place in theatres and unique spaces around Singapore, SIFA 2021 will allow you to interact with artists “live” from around the world. There won’t be any shows that you watch passively on a screen. You can also expect the return of festival favourites such as our popular film offering, Singular Screens, as well as Festival House – the epicentre of the festival. It’s been an honour to helm our national festival and see it grow in stature, both at home and internationally, over the past four years. None of this would have been possible without the support of the incredible team at Arts House Ltd who have worked tirelessly to make this happen, and especially their Herculean efforts of mounting a festival of this scale during a pandemic. In a time where most of us can’t travel, SIFA looks forward to bringing the world to you, and Singaporean artists to the world. See you at SIFA 2021.

PRODUCER’S MESSAGE
From entertaining American soldiers during the Vietnam War, to performing alongside international luminaries, filling our airwaves with the SBC Orchestra to playing with his trio at the Hilton Hotel, Louis’ musical journey is very much intertwined with the fabric of Singapore’s jazz story. When he was awarded the Cultural Medallion in 2018, several in the industry were thinking of ways to mark the milestone. When SIFA decided to put the weight of the festival behind this endeavour, it set the wheels in motion for the concert we have today. In conceptualising this show, the producing team and Music Director Joshua Wan ruminated over how Louis enriched the Singapore arts scene for generations. We felt it most fitting to pay tribute to Louis Soliano with songs dedicated to, and performed for him. The idea was to have the musical guests select and perform a song dedicated to the man of the evening, and we are delighted to present a labour of love from all of us working on the show A Song for Louis.
My deepest appreciation and respect goes out to every talent and member of the show team who, upon hearing this was a tribute to Louis, said without further question, “I’m In!” Special thanks to Joshua Wan for the tremendous work arranging the chosen songs and working to bring out the best of the many artists in performance, and Jeremiah Choy and the production managers for helping us make this work on stage in these times of challenging constraints. The excitement among all the talents working on this project is palpable, and we hope that joy we feel putting this musical reunion on stage translates to a special experience for the audience. And as Louis shares with us some of his stardust tonight, we hope to leave you with some memorable moments, aptly described in the famous standard:

The legend that is Louis Soliano has been built over six decades of performance, entertainment and sheer hard work.
A NOTE FROM LOUIS I feel blessed and honoured that SIFA recognises my achievements as a jazz musician. At my age of 79, it gives me such joy to still be able to do what I love to do. As the son of a migrant Filipino musician, I honed my craft in the streets, working my way up and I had the opportunity to perform with some legends of music from around the world. This journey has taken a lifetime and the recognition makes it all worth it. I would like to share this tribute with my musical family who chose to settle in Singapore and contribute to its cultural history. I am also deeply honoured to have all the esteemed performers gathered to join me in this show. This concert is like a beautiful reunion with my brothers and sisters in music. I have watched these artists grow up to become the successes they are, and feel excited to be collaborating with them.
I am grateful that ‘live’ music is slowly coming back after what has been a tough time for musicians through the pandemic. We all know that live interaction is an essential element of the jazz art form, so I am really looking forward to good music and interaction with the audience tonight. I’d like to thank SIFA for presenting this event, it really is a prestigious honour to me. A heartfelt thank you to the producers Sara Fang and Clarence Yap for all your hard work. Thanks also to Music Director Joshua Wan for stringing it all together, along with Show Director Jeremiah Choy. My appreciation goes out to all the wonderful musicians and performers for gracing this occasion, and all the technical and production crew for your invaluable support. Finally, to the important people who make us performers who we are, the audience, thank you for sharing this evening with me (especially my beloved family!). Mr Louis Soliano (LS), Cultural Medallion recipient and jazz legend shares:
How do you feel about having a show that recognizes your career and achievements in Singapore International Festival of Arts 2021? LS: It’s an indescribable honour for me, to have this concert being presented in such a major festival.
What does it mean to you to have these artists come together on this occasion? LS: It’s very humbling to see all these gifted musicians, who are stars to me, so readily giving their time and immense talents to do this show. I’m so excited that we can all do what we love doing together, making music for our audience.
What are you most looking forward to in this show? LS: I’ve known all of the artists performing for a long time, and actually spent many years with each of them, some I’ve even watched grow up. We’ve gone beyond being colleagues to being friends in the deepest way, so I’m most looking forward to the musical conversations we are going to see in the show.
ABOUT
LOUIS SOLIANO Louis Soliano is an institution in the Singapore music scene, having performed in every major music establishment. An accomplished percussionist and vocalist with six decades of professional experience performing at jazz festivals, concert halls, cabarets and hotels. His musical journey reads like a history of the music in Singapore and the region. Coming from a famed family of musicians, he embarked on a musical career in the late ’50s which saw him tour Asia, Europe and America, working with a long list of international celebrities.
After returning to Singapore in 1974, Soliano made waves with his trio, performing at jazz clubs in Singapore and the region. He then played drums and percussion with the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra, before becoming a regular feature at the Singapore International Jazz Festival in the 1980s and early-1990s. In 1997, Soliano was a recipient of the Compass Artistic Excellence Award for his outstanding musicianship and contributions to the development of the Singapore jazz music scene. He later received his lifetime achievement award from Lawrence Wong, then Minister of Culture, Community and Youth at the inaugural Singapore International Jazz Festival in 2014.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS Joshua Wan Music Director
Joshua Wan has been a familiar face in the Singapore music scene for the last 30 years. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, he has been involved in the studio recording scene as producer and arranger for numerous artistes, including Tracy Huang, Sky Wu, Jeff Chang, Sandy Lam, Kit Chan, JJ Lin, Dick Lee, Jackie Cheung, Eric Moo, Mavis Hee and many more. Joshua has served as Music Director for Singapore’s National Day Parade as well as many stage plays and musicals, including Haunted (Theatreworks), Imagine – A Soundtrack to Peace (Mosaic Music Festival 2012), as well as orchestrator, conductor and Music Director for Judah Ben Hur by Ellen and David Sanborn. Joshua has been writing and performing with his neosoul and jazz funk outfit, The Steve McQueens since 2013; the band is currently preparing to launch their fifth album, The Observer.
Jeremiah Choy Show Director
With close to 30 years of experience in the Singapore and international arts scene, Jeremiah Choy is a Creative Director, Producer and Curator. He has directed and produced theatre shows, concerts, arts festivals, Singapore and international events such as Singapore Day (Sydney, Shanghai, San Francisco), Spotlight Singapore (Cape Town, Bratislava and Prague, and Mexico City), NS50 and Sing50. His major recent works for 2019 include directing TheatreWorks’ Community Tour show Holier Then How, curating Transporta, an immersive experience for PICO Arts for iLight Singapore and Mother of National Festival in Abu Dhabi. Jeremiah was awarded the inaugural Outstanding Kent Ridge Alumni award in 2010. He is the recipient of ST Life! Awards Best Supporting Actor 2019 for his role in Leda and the Rage, and was nominated for Best Director in 2002 for Machine.
Andrew Lim
Andrew Lim has been an integral part of the jazz scene in Singapore and abroad since 2001. Over the years, he has performed on local, regional and international platforms. His reverence to melodies and soulful style have endeared him to audiences throughout the world as well as with the musicians he has worked with. Andrew is currently based in Singapore serving as a National Arts Council Scholar, and continues to contribute to the local cultural fabric as an educator and musician. His work has touched the lives of many younger musicians in Singapore. Besides teaching at LASALLE College of the Arts, School of the Arts and the annual Jazz at the Red Dot programme, he is also a mentor for the Mosaic Jazz Fellows programme. Recently, Andrew was invited to be a Mosaic Associate Artist with the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.
Bobby Singh
Bobby Singh specialises in the tabla and is well-versed in a wide range of styles. From classical Indian to western music, Bobby continues to explore the rhythms of world music. His ability to improvise within any musical genre has established him as a prominent artist in Singapore and abroad. He is particularly skilled in the art of playing western drums and the cajon. Being a sensitive musician, his devotion and passion shines in the expression of the music he renders. Bobby has performed live for numerous recordings and artists, including James Ingram, Asia Beat, Wendy Koh, Mark Chan, Farrid Ali and Bollywood music producer Kalyani Anandaji. Apart from being an excellent musician, Bobby also teaches music under the Ministry of Education and the National Arts Council of Singapore.
Daniel Wong
With his proficiency in diverse genres and settings, Daniel Wong is a familiar face in the Singapore scene, performing at festivals, events, concerts, private functions productions and recordings since 2005. Dan enjoys exploring musical semantics and colours between genres, and recently recorded an EP Seeing Sounds by Berklee composer Felix Phang featuring contemporary jazz in the ECM tradition. Dan also co-founded and composed original material for the FRED Quartet whilst serving as sideman to many projects. He has collaborated with many local musicians and groups including Jeremy Monteiro, Mario Serio, Joanna Dong, Iskandar Ismail, Tan Wei Xiang, Jordan Wei, DJ Koflow, DJ KFC, Omniform, JASSO, Magical Trio, Electrico, IRESON, Wicked Aura, Rani Singam, Yvonne Chan, Dawn Ho, various ensembles, big bands and orchestras.
Don Gomes
One of Southeast Asia’s and Australia’s finest jazz talents, is a pianist, vocalist, arranger, musical director, performer and composer. Known for his skillful piano chops, Don commutes between Perth, where he has been living, and Singapore and commands a strong following in both countries.
Jeremy Monteiro
As jazz pianist composer, producer vocalist and educator, Jeremy Monteiro has been a professional musician since 1976, with more than 40 solo albums to his name. Jeremy has performed with James Moody, Ernie Watts, Simon & Garfunkel in great venues all over the world. He has also performed at Ronnie Scott’s in London, the Mainstage of the Montreux, EFG London and many other jazz festivals. In 2002, he received Singapore’s highest honour in the arts, the Cultural Medallion. Currently, he is a Fellow of the London College of Music and a Visiting Professor of the University of West London. He is also the Executive Director and Music Director of Jazz Association (Singapore) and the Managing Director of his company, Showtime Productions Pte Ltd for over three decades.
Jimmy Lee
Born in Singapore and a student of New York Drummer’s Collective, Jimmy Lee has played the drums since age 17. His talent and professionalism has made him one of the most respected, prolific and experienced live and studio session drummers in the region. As a much sought after sessionist, he has performed and recorded with international stars, including A-Mei, Jeff Chang, Kenny Bee, Liu Jia Chang, Wynners, Sally Yeh, George Lam, Stephanie Sun, Eric Moo, Dick Lee, Eason Chan, Three Degrees, Lobo, Alex To, Jacky Cheung and many more. His self-authored Drums Textbooks have been widely adopted by music schools in the region Jimmy is also an endorsee of Yamaha Drums and Zildjian cymbals.
Joanna Dong
Singaporean jazz artiste, actor and host Joanna Dong became a household name in 2017 after placing third in popular singing competition, Sing! China. Joanna is well regarded by her music industry peers and was a featured performer with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, JASSO and Dingyi. Her sold-out, two-night concert in 2018 for the EP So Here I Am toured successfully in Asia. An ambassador for SPOP Sing! and a mentor on the second season of The Great Singapore Replay, Joanna actively impacts aspiring musical talents. As a bilingual actor and host, Joanna has received various film, stage and television awards for her work, such as the Best Entertainment Hostess at the 2019 Asia Rainbow TV Awards. Joanna graduated with Honours in Sociology from the National University of Singapore. She founded Do Be Do Di, an arts and entertainment company, in 2019.
Rahimah Rahim
Rahimah Rahim is a true icon in the Singapore music scene. Born into a family of performers, Rahimah was just six when she landed a role in the 1961 film Korban Kasih (Love Sacrifice). The multi-talented songbird has been a part of Singapore’s entertainment industry since the 1960s, first debuting as a child actress before making a name for both herself and her country when she beat more than 100 singers across Asia to win the Kimi Koso Star 1974 singing competition in Japan. Rahimah’s singing career then took her all over the world and straight into our hearts, always in the spotlight with her strong melodious voice, intriguing personal life and infectiously bubbly personality. She was inducted into the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame in 2017.
Richard Jackson
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio to a Gospel singer father, Richard Jackson grew up surrounded by music. His voice quickly became synonymous with vocal legends such as Luther Vandross, Barry White, Marvin Gaye and Ronald Isley. He went on to open for legendary acts such as The Stylistics, Regina Belle, Tuck & Patti, Peabo Bryson, Will Downing, Jennifer Holiday, George Clinton, Incognito and Bob James. He has performed with Jazz legends Ernie Watts and Randy Brecker as well as Kenny Drew Jr, Al Di Meola and Ricky Lawson to name a few. Currently based in Singapore, Richard is in constant demand, performing internationally at jazz festivals in France, Russia, Australia as well as throughout Asia. He combines incredible tone with intelligent phrasing and heartfelt intensity. Along with a convincing vocal trombone, listening to Richard sing is like being covered by a warm blanket on a winter’s day.
Rit Xu
Rit Xu is an internationally award-winning flutist whose artistic practice is in solo, chamber and large-ensemble improvisation, original compositions as well as jazz and music pedagogy. As a performer, he has emerged as a leading light of his generation and is gaining international recognition for his lyrical, thoughtful and introspective musical voice on the flute. His passionate, wholehearted and at times fiery performances has earned the admiration of fans and fellow musicians worldwide. In 2014, Rit won the United States National Flute Association (NFA) Jazz Artist Competition, making him the first Southeast Asian to win a solo jazz competition in the United States. As a bandleader and composer, Rit most recently represented Singapore at the Vientiane International Jazz Festival 2019 with his band—the Rit Xu Group—and performed two of his original jazz compositions. The ban also released their debut EP in the same year.
Sean Hong Wei
Sean Hong Wei is a young and upcoming saxophonist from Singapore. His playing is deeply influenced by the soulful blues of Ray Charles and the great tenors of the 1950s and 1960s including Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and David “Fathead” Newman. At age 13, Sean fell in love with Charlie Parker when he first heard Bird’s Yardbird Suite. Since then, his love for the music has grown exponentially after discovering more records and studying the rich tradition of African American music. Sean performs regularly with both the Jazz Association Singapore Orchestra and its youth wing, which are led by Jeremy Monteiro. In his work with the orchestras, he has performed alongside notable jazz luminaries such as Benny Golson, Randy Brecker, Antonio Hart, Tony Lakatos and Louis Nash.
Tama Goh
Tama Goh is a drumming stalwart and much-respected musician and educator in the regional music scene. He has been performing with Jeremy Monteiro’s Jam bands since 1989. Together with Jeremy Monteiro, he has worked with Terumasa Hino, Carmen Bradford and Eldee Young, amongst many other illustrious musicians. Tama Goh has also performed with pop artists Ronan Keating, Frances Yip, Maria Cordeiro, Eric Moo, Coco Lee, Anthony Lun, Sarah Brightman and Sandy Lam. He also played at the Jakarta Jazz Festival, the 2010 London Jazz Festival, Frankfurt’s Jazzkeller and the Wellington Arts Festival 2004. He was conferred the COMPASS Artistic Excellence Award in 2015 for his outstanding artistic contributions to Singapore and was the recipient of the SOKA Association’s Golden Lion Award, for his contribution to the WORLD PEACE movement. In June 2005, he received the Singapore Street Festival Tribute Award. As a regular member of JASSO, Tama Goh has played in many of JASSO’s outreach performances and concerts and has toured with JASSO to various international jazz festivals including the 13th JZ Festival Shanghai, Sing Jazz and the EFG London Jazz Festival.
Tony Makarome
Conductor, composer and bassist, Dr Tony Makarome is an Associate Professor at the Yong Siew Yoh Conservatory, National University of Singapore. Dr Makarome has studied with Miroslav Vitous (bass), Robert Spano (conducting) and is currently a mridangam student at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society under Thirupunthira Sreekanth. His former teachers were T. R. Sundaresan and R. Karthikeyan. As a bassist, he has performed with the likes of Louis Bellson, Greg Fishman, Tony Bennett, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra and Quartet West. Dr Makarome is a leading pedagogue of solfège, theory and jazz. He co-wrote, produced and performed in Jazz 1-2-3, an interactive educational musical with Rani Singam. Dr Makarome was also a mentor for Esplanade’s Mosaic Jazz Fellows. His recent compositions include What Pattern? and Rain Konnakkol. In 2019, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra premiered his orchestral composition, Jewel of Srivijaya.

Louis comes from a mixed heritage. His father is Filipino, and his mother is Vietnamese Chinese, and they met in Vietnam.
2 Louis is the eldest son of 10 children in
his family. His siblings are Mona, Ariena, Melinda, Cecilia, Carmen, Eduardo, Estrelita, Severino and Doris. 3 He has seven grandchildren, and they
are all boys!
6 As a teenager, Louis won a drum
contest organised by Rediffusion, Cathay Organisation and Paramount Pictures to celebrate the release of The Gene Krupa Story, a biopic celebrating the life of American drummer and bandleader. 7 Louis won a second competition, the
1979 Sony Talent Quest. He sang Natalie Cole’s “Hey Mr. Melody” while playing Rototom drums displaying his versatility as a complete showman.

Institution, and before that, he attended St. Michael’s Primary School.

passport in Vietnam while performing to entertain American soldiers during the Vietnam War.

ABOUT ARTS HOUSE LIMITED
Arts House Limited (AHL) is a not-for-profit organisation committed to enriching lives through the arts. AHL manages two key landmarks located in the heart of Singapore’s Civic District – The Arts House, a multi-disciplinary arts centre with a focus on literary programming, and the Victoria Theatre & Victoria Concert Hall, a heritage building that is home to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. It also runs the Goodman Arts Centre and Aliwal Arts Centre, two creative enclaves for artists, arts groups and creative businesses, and performing arts space Drama Centre. AHL presents the Singapore International Festival of Arts, the annual pinnacle celebration of performance and interdisciplinary arts in Singapore commissioned by the National Arts Council. AHL was set up in 11 December 2002 as a company limited by guarantee (CLG) under the National Arts Council and was formerly known as The Old Parliament House Limited. It was officially renamed Arts House Limited on 19 March 2014. In 2020, AHL was appointed cultural place manager of the Civic District.
ABOUT SIFA
As Singapore’s annual pinnacle performing arts festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) presents captivating and diverse works across theatre, music, dance, film and visual arts. First launched as the Singapore Festival of Arts in 1977, the festival has gone through several evolutions and inspired generations of arts lovers and practitioners. Today, the highly anticipated festival is a high point on Singapore’s arts and cultural calendar. SIFA continues its festival mission to champion the creation and presentation of Singaporean and international works.
