The purpose and importance of Grandparents Day, September 12th
The Fall
A man named Jack was walking along a steep cliff one day, when he accidentally got too close to the edge and fell. On the way down he grabbed a branch, which temporarily stopped his fall. He looked down and to his horror saw that the canyon fell straight down for more than a thousand feet. He couldn’t hang onto the branch forever, and there was no way for him to climb up the steep wall of the cliff. So Jack began yelling for help, hoping that someone passing by would hear him and lower a rope or something. HELP! HELP! Is anyone up there? “HELP!” He yelled for a long time, but no one heard him. He was about to give up when he heard a voice. Jack, Jack. Can you hear me?” “Yes, yes! I can hear you. I’m down here!” “I can see you, Jack. Are you all right?” “Yes, but who are you, and where are you? “I am the Lord, Jack. I’m everywhere.” “The Lord? You mean, GOD?” “That’s Me.” “God, please help me! I promise if, you’ll get me down from here, I’ll stop sinning. I’ll be a really good person. I’ll serve You for the rest of my life.” “Easy on the promises, Jack. Let’s get you off from there; then we can talk.” “Now, here’s what I want you to do. Listen carefully.” “I’ll do anything, Lord. Just tell me what to do.” “Okay. Let go of the branch.””What?” “I said, let go of the branch. Just trust Me. Let go.” There was a long silence. Finally Jack yelled, “HELP! HELP! IS ANYONE ELSE UP THERE?”

In this issue of Sierra Scoop we have included a few additional articles, etc on behalf of our Grandma and Grandpa readers. We wish all Grandmas and Grandpas a Happy Grandparents Day! Although it is not classified as a federal holiday, Grandparents Day is a national holiday or observance, celebrated each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Many people assume that Grandparents Day resulted from lobbying by florists, greeting card companies, and similar businesses. This idea could not be farther from the truth. Grandparents Day is a day for celebrating the connections between the generations, and its origin was decidedly noncommercial. The holiday has remained fairly true to its roots. A few ways to celebrate include meals or shared activities like playing cards, going for a walk, or just visiting over a cup of tea. The roots of Grandparents Day go back to 1956 and a West Virginia mother named Marian McQuade. While helping to organize a community celebration for those over 80, she became aware of the many nursing home residents who were forgotten by their families. She wanted a holiday to bring attention to these individuals and to honor all grandparents. In 1973, West Virginia became the first state to have such a day. Although it might seem that the name of this day should be Grandparents’ Day, it is not. Unlike Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, Grandparents Day does not use an apostrophe. McQuade and other supporters of the holiday then shifted their efforts to the national level, achieving success in 1978. Today, Grandparents Day is celebrated annually in homes, retirement and nursing home facilities, and communities across the United States. Each year, the observance is proclaimed by the president as well. SPECIALIZING IN GARAGES, ADDITIONS, REMODELS, decks, patio covers, free estimates, NV#0080432, Redline Construction Inc. How to wash a cat
1) Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water bowl. 2) Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom. 3) In one smooth movement put the cat in the toilet and close the lid. You may need to stand on the lid. 4) At this point, the cat will self-agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this! 5) Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a ‘Power-Wash and Rinse’. 6) Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door. 7) Stand well back, a far away as you can and quickly lift the lid. 8) The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the house and run outside where he will dry himself off. 9) Both the toilet and cat will be sparkling clean. Yours Sincerely, The Dog. Note: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME! September 6th - Labor Day 6
I am over 60 and the Armed Forces thinks I’m too old to track down terrorists. You can’t be older than 42 to join the military. They’ve got the whole thing backwards. Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn’t be able to join a military unit until you’re at least 35. For starters: Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old guys only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy. Young guys haven’t lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. ‘My back hurts! I can’t sleep, I’m tired and hungry’ We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some a*****e that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for a while. An 18-year-old doesn’t even like to get up before 10 a.m. Old guys always get up early to pee so what the hell. Besides, like I said, I’m tired and can’t sleep and since I’m already up, I may as well be hunting for some fanatical arsewipe. If captured we couldn’t spill the beans because we’d forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank, and serial number would be a real brainteaser. Boot camp would be easier for old guys. We’re used to getting screamed and yelled at and we’re used to soft food. We’ve also developed an appreciation for guns. We’ve been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling. They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I’ve been in combat and didn’t see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any pushups after completing basic training. Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I’ve never seen anyone outrun a bullet. An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He’s still learning to shave, to start up a conversation with a pretty girl. He still hasn’t figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head. These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm’s way. Let us old guys track down those dirty rotten coward terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple million p’d off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons who know that their best years are already behind them. How about recruiting Women over 50 ...in menopause!!! You think Men have attitudes!!! You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!!! If nothing else, put them on border patrol.... They will have it secured the first night! CUSTOM CANVAS WORK! Upon entering a little country store, the stranger noticed a sign warning, “Danger! Beware of dog!” posted on the glass door. Inside, he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor beside the cash register. “Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of?” he asked the owner. “Yep, that’s him,” came the reply. The stranger couldn’t help but be amused. “That certainly doesn’t look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign?” “Because,” the owner explained, “Before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him.” BROWNING A BOLT 7WSM. 3.5 TO 10 LEOPOLD Scope, 4 Boxes ammo, 2 magazines. $1,000, Call (775)901-1775 HANDYMAN SERVICES, WOOD DECK repair, replace, resurface and remove, trash removal, Honey-Do’s, etc. Serving Carson Valley (775)315-2235

Play 20 Questions. Who doesn’t love playing 20 questions? This game is a great way to learn something new and it doesn’t take much effort from either party. Stay at home or play it on a long car ride for something to do. Tell stories. Whether the stories are true or not, they are still fun to tell. You can start by taking turns by telling a favorite memory or tell a story together by finishing each other’s sentences. Teach each other something new. Both parties have skills and hobbies that the other may enjoy. That is why it is important to teach other something new that they can pass down as new generations come to pass. Draw pictures of one another. Who knew Grandma or Grandpa was an artist? Drawings are a great keepsake for both the grandchild and grandparent. Draw a family tree, and discuss its branches. Most families are a lot bigger than we tend to perceive. Have your child sit with their grandparents and go over a little family history. Interview each other! Take notes or record it with your phone. Give your child something to look back on by having them interview Grandma or Grandpa! Who knows, you may find out something new yourself. Glamp for a Night - If you like the idea of camping with the kids, but don’t think they’re quite ready for a weekend in the outdoors, try glamping for a night. All you need is a tent or fort set up in either your backyard or living room, supplies for a sleepover, and candles or flashlights (because you can’t have electricity while camping!) A few more ideas: Take a flashlight into a dark closet in the daytime and practice making shadow puppets. Teach your grandchild a tongue twister. Try to catch coins off your elbow. Have a competition. Buy a magnifying glass for you and one for your grandchild and look at everything with them. Mark off a section of your yard or garden and count the living creatures you can find in it. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Going to bed
Mom and Dad were watching TV when Mom said, “I’m tired, and it’s getting late. I think I’ll go to bed.” She went to the kitchen to make sandwiches for the next day’s lunches, rinsed out the popcorn bowls, took meat out of the freezer for supper the following evening, checked the cereal box levels, filled the sugar container, put spoons and bowls on the table and started the coffee pot for brewing the next morning. She then put some wet clothes into the dryer, put a load of clothes into the wash, ironed a shirt and secured a loose button. She picked up the newspapers strewn on the floor, picked up the game pieces left on the table and put the telephone book back into the drawer. She watered the plants, emptied a wastebasket and hung up a towel to dry. She yawned and stretched and headed for the bedroom. She stopped by the desk and wrote a note to the teacher, counted out some cash for the field trip, and pulled a textbook out from hiding under the chair. She signed a birthday card for a friend, addressed and stamped the envelope and wrote a quick note for the grocery store. She put both near her purse. Mom then washed her face, put on moisturizer, brushed and flossed her teeth and trimmed her nails. Hubby called, “I thought you were going to bed.” “I’m on my way,” she said. She put some water into the dog’s dish and put the cat outside, then made sure the doors were locked. She looked in on each of the kids and turned out a bedside lamp, hung up a shirt, threw some dirty socks in the hamper, and had a brief conversation with the one up still doing homework. In the bedroom, she set the alarm, laid out clothing for the

Some people grow old gracefully
Some people grow old gracefully, while others fight and scratch the whole way. Andy’s wife, refusing to give in to the looks of growing old, goes out and buys a new line of expensive cosmetics guaranteed to make her look years younger. After a lengthy sitting before the mirror applying the “miracle” products, she asks her husband, “Darling, honestly, if you didn’t know me, what age would you say I am”? Looking over her carefully, Andy replied, “Judging from your skin, 20; your hair, 18; your eyes, 16 and your figure, 25.” “Oh, you flatterer!” she gushed. Just as she was about to tell Andy his reward, he stops her by saying, “Whoa, hold on their sweetie! I haven’t added them up yet!” ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A GREAT ESCAPE close to home? “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Last Wishes
Sometime after Sidney died, his widow, Rachel, was finally able to speak about what a thoughtful, considerate, and wonderful man her late husband had been. “My Sidney thought of everything”, she told them. “Just before he died, he called me to his bedside. He handed me three envelopes. ‘Rachel’, he told me. ‘I have put all my last wishes in these three envelopes. After I am gone, please open them and do exactly as I have instructed. Knowing you’ll do this, I can rest in peace’.” “What was in the envelopes?” her friends asked. “The first envelope contained $5,000 with a note, ‘Please use this money to buy a nice casket’. So I bought a beautiful mahogany casket with such a comfortable lining that I know Sidney is resting very comfortably. “The second envelope contained $10,000 with a note, ‘Please use this for a nice funeral’. I made Sidney a very dignified funeral and bought all his favorite foods.” “And the third envelope?” asked her friends. “The third envelope contained $25,000 with a note, ‘Please use this to buy a nice stone’. At that point, Rachel held up her hand and pointed to her ring finger, on which was a gorgeous ten carat diamond ring. “So?”, said Rachel, “You like my stone?” NDM-86 DRAGONOV COMPLETE, PLUS EXTRAS and a full case of 7N1 ammunition, Asking $11,000 or best offer, contact Pete at (775)315-4285

School Security
As a new school Principal, Mr. Mitchell was checking over his school on the first day. Passing the stockroom, he was startled to see the door wide open and teachers bustling in and out, carrying off books and supplies in preparation for the arrival of students the next day. The school where he had been a Principal the previous year had used a checkout system only slightly less elaborate than that at Fort Knox. Cautiously, he asked the school’s long time Custodian, “Do you think it’s wise to keep the stock room unlocked and to let the teachers take things without requisitions?” The Custodian looked at him gravely. “We trust them with the children, don’t we?” YOUR DREAM VACATION IS CLOSER THAN YOU think! Never tell your age...
The census taker knocked on Donnas door. She answered all his questions except one. She refused to tell him her age. “But everyone tells their age to the census taker,” he said. “Did my next door neighbors, Miss Maisy Hill and Miss Daisy Hill, tell you THEIR ages?” she asked. “Certainly,” he replied. “Well, I’m the same age as they are!” she snapped. “As old as the Hills,” he wrote on his form.

The following story was from a hand written storybook that my Great Grandma Hilda “Hildur” Johnson provided as a gift to family members on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1968. This is the first chapter of three about herself, Grandpa Henry “Henrik”, and their families. A blond blue eyed daughter was born to Henrik and Mathilda Ohngren in Mellansel, Sweden on Jan. 3, 1898. She was the fourth child, having two brothers Olof and John, and a sister, Karin, older than herself. When Hildur was four another brother, Henrik, was born. Henrik Ohngren Sr. was a land owner called “Bonde” in Sweden. He was the oldest son in his family, and as the custom in Sweden, inherited the home and land when his father died. His father died at an early age, so Henry had a good home for his family. He provided a separate home for his mother, so was in the process of building a large new home on the farm when Hilda was born. She was born in the bakery house. In Sweden they had a separate building with huge stone oven in which all baking was done. It was the custom to bake bread in there in these huge ovens, enough to last six months. This bread was rolled thin and when baked was stacked away and dried. That’s the reason all Swedes like hard tack. Henrik raised his own grain and had a mill to grind his grain. A river, “Angermanelven”’ flowed along the side of his land, so he had a big mill-wheel that furnished power for his mill. Besides raising grain, he had horses, cows, sheep, pigs and chickens, as the land was rich and productive. Some winter months Henrik worked in logging camps to earn extra money. He had a good education in his early years, so used to draw up and take care of many legal matters in that part of the country. Hilda remembers how his letters were always so formal and business like. Henriks brother, John, was married to Mathilda’s sister, Kristina. They left Sweden for America in 1902, so Henrik decided to follow them there to the land of opportunity. He sold his farm and belongings, and with their five children, came to Park Rapids, Minn. a few months later. There he built a home and worked in a saw mill. Hilda has a very vague recollection of Sweden. A few things stand out, as remembering that she walked on stubble, short cut grass or hay that cut her bare feet. Then at one time being up in the hay loft and some children daring her to jump out, she said if they would go hide she would jump, which they did, and when she jumped she ended up running into the house with blood streaming from mouth and nose. On the trip to America, Hilda was lost at Liverpool, England. She was finally found walking happily and peacefully along with the crowd in that city. Hilda started school in Park Rapids, Minn. in the kindergarten at the age of six. Sister, Carrie, started at the same time. Olof and John had previously entered the year before. The children have no recollection of a language problem, so must have adjusted quickly. Hilda loved school and got along very well. She passed through the yard of Dr. Stone on her way to school and remembers how she would walk slow and dally along imagining that people seeing her thought she lived in that beautiful home. Hilda and other children passed by a turn table on their way to

school. That is where the engine of a train is turned around. One day, coming from school the turn table had been left unlocked, so the children thinking it was like a merry-go-round climbed on and hung on over the side. Some larger boys turned it around. Hilda, being the first one on became crushed over the hips where the two rails came together. When the children turned it back Hilda fell limp to the ground and had to be carried home by the children. It was thought at first she would not live, but after a long struggle, learning to walk again by holding on to chairs, she was able to walk and play and go back to school. Hilda was quick to learn, so continued on with her class. When she was in the sixth grade she was promoted at mid term to the seventh thereby completing 6th and 7th in one year. Mrs. Ohngren wanted her children confirmed in Swedish. There was no Lutheran church in Park Rapids so it was neces-
sary to have a visiting pastor conduct classes. Olof, John, Carrie and Hilda together with Jack and Peter Eastman were confirmed in Swedish when Hilda was only twelve. When Hilda was fifteen the family moved to Bemidji, Minn. where she attended High School in her sophomore year. After three months it became necessary for her to quit to help out at home. The family had increased to nine children and her mother to help with the family budget, had begun keep boarders and roomers. Father worked six days a week at the saw mill, Carrie was working at the Markham Hotel, so there was too much work for mother to do so she needed Hilda at home to help. Bemidji had a new State Teachers College, so Hilda attended school there the following summer. At that time, if you passed all state board exams and requirements to teach you were given a second class teacher’s certificate. Hilda took all tests and to

her surprise passed all of them. She was not yet seventeen, but had falsified her age in order to take the exam. Her first school was at Grygla, Minn. where she taught two years. By attending summer sessions at the College she was able to advance to a first class Teacher’s Certificate. While growing up Hilda had several boy friends and admirers, but none that especially interested her. The winter of 1916-17 Hilda was teaching at the Bass Lake School, not too far from home. One week end she had planned to spend with her girl friend and go to a dance out in the country near her home. Her friend walked to school to accompany her through the snow to her home. On the way when passing Hilda’s Uncle Erick’s logging camp, they decided to stop for a cup of coffee. There was Henry Johnson working as a helper to the cook, so he served them. Naturally there was conversation so Henry went to the dance too. He tells how much he fell in love with Hilda then with her red blouse and red cheeks. So the romance began…. Billy Mills shocked the world
Billy Mills was born on June 30, 1938 in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He is Oglala Lakota (Sioux) and grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Billy did not have an easy childhood. Surrounded by poverty and orphaned at the age of 12, he started running to channel his energy into something positive. In high school, his gift for running become more apparent as he set records in numerous track events. He went on to earn a track scholarship from the University of Kansas and then served as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps. At the 1964 Olympics, he shocked the world and came from behind to win the gold medal in the 10,000 meters race. At the time, he set a world record of 28 minutes, 24.4 seconds and is still the only American to ever win a gold medal in the 10K event. His win was an upset that has been called the second greatest moment in Olympic history. In Lakota culture, someone who achieves great success has a ‘giveaway’ to thank the support system of family and friends who helped him achieve his goal. As part of his effort to give back to his community, Billy helped found Running Strong for American Indian Youth and became the organization’s National Spokesperson. Today Billy travels over 300 days every year. He visits Native American communities throughout the U.S. and speaks to youth about healthy lifestyles and taking pride in their heritage. Billy is a devoted family man. He has been married to Pat Mills, a talented artist and owner of Studio Tupos, for nearly 60 years. Together they have 4 daughters, 12 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. They currently reside in Northern Califor-
nia, where Billy and Pat keep up an active speakers’ bureau and enjoy time spent with family and friends. Estranged Grandparents Prayer
Father God, bring comfort to the hearts of broken Grandparents who are suffering through the tragedy of being undeservedly alienated from Grandchildren we love. Help us to see ourselves as You see us: deserving of love and honor, precious in Your sight. Your Holy Word assures us in Psalm 56:8 that our tears are bottled up in heaven and that you keep track of all of our sufferings. Have mercy upon us and heal us. We ask that You open doors that have long been closed to us and open the shuttered windows of souls that do not allow in the light of Your love, healing and reconciliation. Protect our Grandchildren’s minds and hearts from evil. Bless their lives and keep them safe. In some way let them know we Grandparents love them and want to see them. Enter into the minds and hearts of the parents and caretakers of precious alienated children and cause them to realize the harm they are doing to elderly Grandparents and to innocent Grandchildren. Induce them to feel compassion and empathy towards the ones they consciously abuse and alienate. Cause them to feel love and care for us once again. We beseech you to be merciful to our adult children we still love and to be a part of their lives. Be merciful to all alienators, whatever family role they play in our Grandchildren’s lives. Our time is drawing shorter on the earth. We need and want our family members near as well as being a blessing to them in return. Make us a blessing. Change our hearts where needed. Show us the way, bring justice and heal our families. Amen (by Carolyn Smith)

Folk Wisdom and Just Fun
Have you noticed that your grandchildren don’t understand some of the expressions you use? When I’m cooking with the grandchildren, I often say, “A watched pot never boils,” which gets me nothing but blank looks. We’ve abbreviated some of our sayings, which makes the meaning difficult to gather. Adults know that when you refer to a silver lining, that’s a shortened form of “Every cloud has a silver lining.” But kids may not know that. Similarly, when we say, “The grass is greener,” most adults fill in “on the other side of the fence,” but kids may be lost. Many of our grandparents’ sayings come from an agricultural past that our grandchildren know little about. I think that’s a little sad, so I try to keep these idioms alive. When I thought I faced a big obstacle, my dad would say, “That’s no hill for a stepper.” A stepper was a horse that had a flashy gait, that raised its knees high. When someone became wealthy, my dad would say, “He’s in tall cotton.” If I lost weight, my grandmother would say, “You’re about to dry up and blow away!” She had seen a few crops do just that during times of drought. When I was getting tired near the end of a task, my dad would say, “Come on. You’re in the short rows now.” Farmers often plowed fields at an angle, so when you were near the end of
weeding or harvesting, you were in the “short rows.” “Between hay and grass” referred to someone who wasn’t young and wasn’t old. One of my friend’s dads, when asked how he was doing, always said, “Entre verde o seco” (“between green and dry”). Other sayings have lost their meanings for different reasons. Try telling your grandchildren that they “sound like a broken record”! (S. What is the meaning behind she/her he/him, etc?
I recently received an email from a potential client. In the email signature (after recipients name) it read, Pronouns: she/ her/hers. I researched online and this is what I found. People are adding their pronouns to their social media bios, emails and more to let you or others know which pronouns to use when speaking about them. This is a way to help people avoid accidentally misgendering someone. The act of putting pronouns in your bio is mostly a phenomenon within the trans and queer community. Because of this it can also be used to signal that you are either a member of the community or that you are supportive of trans (and genderqueer) people. So to sum up, trans, non-binary or otherwise non-cis people usually use the pronouns in their bio to let others know which pronouns to use for them while cis allies do the same to show support or to normalize putting pronouns in their bio. Because the more people do it, the more it makes sense for people seeing it. Examples of pronouns one might use to refer to others are: he/ him/his (for someone who might identify as male). she/her/hers (for someone who might identify as female). they/them/their (for someone who might not identify strictly as male or female, these pronouns are considered “gender neutral”; also used when referring to multiple people) All real estate advertising in this paper is subject to the Fair Housing Act which makes it illegal to advertise “any preference, limitations or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin, or an intention to make any such preference, limitation or discrimination.” 2005 DODGE 2500 QUAD CAB 4X4, 5.9L DIESEL, automatic, almond color, long bed, sprayed in bed liner, many extras, 95,400 miles, asking $42,000, Call (775)266-4005 CASH PAID FOR VINTAGE COSTUME JEWELRY. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” We Are One, Remembering 9-11
As the soot and dirt and ash rained down, we became one color. As we carried each other down the stairs of the burning buildings, we became one class. As we lit candles of waiting and hope, we became one generation. As the firefighters and police officers fought their way into the inferno, we became one gender. As we fell to our knees in prayer for strength, we became one... A woman was on the witness stand, accused of poisoning her husband. “After you put poison in the coffee, you sat at the breakfast table and watched your husband drink it. Tell me, didn’t you feel the slightest bit of pity for him?” the defense attorney prompted. “Yes,” she replied, “I think there was one moment when I felt sorry for him.” “And when was that?” “When he asked for his second cup.” PORSCHES WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE!
