I woke up in a bad mood this morning. I’d had a fitful night’s sleep and my bad back was sorer and tighter than ever. My shoulder was starting to feel just as sore too. I tried to stretch them out to no avail and stumbled into the bathroom. I looked in the mirror and saw the pain on my face. I certainly wasn’t looking any younger either. My hair was now mostly gray and mostly gone on top. I was getting more and more age spots on my face. My wrinkles were deeper than ever. The enamel was worn out on my teeth. I’d recently had to get a stronger pair of glasses. My skin was thinner. My toenails were thicker. My prostrate was bigger. And to top it all off my hemorrhoids were hurting. I griped to God about it all. “Why do our bodies start to wear out just when we finally learn how to live?” I asked. God in His infinite patience and unconditional love answered me quite quickly. Suddenly, I felt this thought drop into my mind, “The car you drive isn’t as important as the person behind the wheel!” I smiled at that because I’d had so many old, used cars in my life. They all had “personality”. They all had quirks, troubles, and problems. They all required patience and repair. But they always got me where I was going. Now that my body was starting to wear down, rattle, and backfire God was reminding me that I wasn’t that body. I was the driver inside of it. I was the bright, shining soul within. I was the spirit that was both ageless and eternal. And while my car wasn’t going to last forever, the driver was. Take good care of this body you drive around then. Nurture it. Keep it in good repair. Make it last as long as you can. But always remember it isn’t you. You are the person behind the wheel. You are the loving soul within. You are the Child of God destined for eternal life. (author unknown) HOME IN NEED OF IMPROVEMENT? ADDITIONS, remodels, garages, we do it all! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Grounds for divorce...
A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce, and asked, “What are the grounds for your divorce?” She replied, “About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property with a stream running by.” “No,” he said, “I mean what is the foundation of this case?” “It is made of concrete, brick and mortar,” she responded. “I mean,” he continued, “What are your relations like?” “I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband’s parents.” He said, “Do you have a real grudge?” “No,” she replied, “We have a two-car carport and have never really needed one.” “Please,” he tried again, “is there any infidelity in your marriage?” “Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don’t necessarily like the music, but the answer to your questions is ‘yes’.” “Ma’am, does your husband ever beat you up?” “Yes,” she responded, “about twice a week he gets up earlier than I do.” Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, “Lady, why do you want a divorce?” “Oh, I don’t want a divorce,” she replied. “I’ve never wanted a divorce. My husband does. He said he can’t communicate with me.”

What are we doing to our children?
I have to ask, What are we doing to our children? Some would say we’re protecting them. Others would add that we’re protecting any vulnerable adults they might come in contact with—despite growing evidence that young children are not contagious because the virus does not hang onto them like it does older people. We also have evidence that people are not as contagious when they’re asymptomatic, as once believed, which means that standard protocol for any sickness would be sufficient—stay at home if you’re sick or if you’re immuno-compromised. Instead of using common sense, we’re covering our young children and enshrouding them in an environment of fear, all the while calling it “kindness to others.” This could have damaging long-term effects on our children that far outweigh any threat from COVID. Children are extremely vulnerable psychologically and emotionally, especially when their brains are still developing and behaviors imprint on neurological connections that can cause disruptions to normal development. When you impose irrational fear on children, you are in a sense traumatizing them. You are creating an atmosphere in which they are reacting to events around them in which they don’t feel any control. They can’t escape from it, they have to do what fearful adults tell them, and they trust authorities in their lives to do what’s best for them—when this doesn’t happen, they’re trapped and their normal development of relationships is laced with fear and panic. The long-term effects of childhood trauma are manifold. It creates an inability to trust, to properly regulate emotions, to productively handle conflict, and to develop healthy relationships, especially those having to do with authority. Fear drives them away from a normal ability to love. The best way to raise children is to empower them to face their fears and to become strong. This is as much true for their spirits and their minds as their bodies. COVID is a perfect example. By exposing children to the virus, they are strengthened in their immunity to it. This doesn’t mean there isn’t risk. Every time a child walks out the door, he is at risk. He could die in a car accident. He could get the flu and die. He could fall out of a tree and die. He could dive into a pool and die. These realities of the fragility of life are why parents must help children look threats in the face in a realistic but safe way. The best thing we can do for our children is to let them live their lives with all the risk that entails, educating them about the threats of life while still properly protecting them, empowering them to face death as part of life, and to teaching them to be sensitive to the feelings of others without becoming their slaves. Otherwise, you’re developing a fearful generation that does not depend on God to be their savior, but on man. This doesn’t bode well for them as they grow into adults or for our society whose liberty is dependent on free thinkers and strong, moral individuals who aren’t afraid but have a proper respect for life’s dangers. Before I die
Showing his friend around his home, Jennings pointed out all of the collectibles he and his wife had acquired over their long years of marriage. “The day before I die, I’d like to sell every piece we’ve got just to see how much it’s all worth.” “Well,” his friend replies, “since you couldn’t possibly know the day before you were going to die, you’ll never be able to sell!” “And that’s where you’re wrong,” the man smiled. “If I sell it, my wife would kill me!”

The Sweet Kiss
There was a couple involved in a very bad car accident. The wife’s face was badly burned. The doctors said they could take the burnt skin and replace it with extra skin. The woman’s husband gladly allowed the doctors to use some skin from his behind. The woman healed beautifully and ask her husband if there was anything she could do for him for being so nice to donate his skin. I pick up a piece of trash every day!
I live in a city downtown and frequently notice the trash on the side of the road, as I’m sure most of us do in their own city. So every time I take my dog for a walk or go outside, I pick up at least one piece of trash. Although this seems small in the moment and feels like it won’t make a difference, it truly helps over time as well as makes me feel good about myself for helping out! If we all did this just once a day we would be taking part in helping the planet and keeping our community a clean and better place to live in overall! Labor Day
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday. PET CARE SERVICE! You’ve come to the annoying realization that your parents were right about almost everything. The bag boy volunteers to help load groceries into your car—in the “ten items or less” lane. You’ve stopped supporting your children, and started supporting your parents. You’ve found yourself discussing rain gutters. You remember your kid’s names, just not always the right one. You have nightmares about forgetting to move the garbage cans to the street for the garbage collector. Your high school yearbook is now home to three different species of mold. You buy “age-defying” makeup and “antiwrinkle” creams and believe they work. You’ve realized that all those geeky people in Bermuda shorts walking around Disney World include you. You recognize Led Zeppelin songs that have been turned into elevator music. As a public service, you have agreed to never appear on the beach in a Speedo again. You’ve had three opportunities to buy every single Disney Animated Classic—“for the last time in a generation” You’d pay good money to be strip-searched. WalMart and target seem to share your fashion sense. The only way you know to stop a virtual pet from beeping involves the patio and a sledgehammer. You can pack two suits, Five shirts, five ties, five pairs of underwear, five pairs of socks, a pair of shoes, and half of your bathroom into a carry-on bag—in less than five minutes. You know what Earth Shoes are. You think if you hear “Stairway to Heaven” one more time your head will explode. Your weight-lifting program seems to have no effect on your muscles, but the veins on the backs of your hands are bulking up quite nicely. On Saturday night, when your wife mentions “hot oil, a little friction, and squealing,” you tell her you’ll have the car looked at first thing Monday morning. Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is one of Judaism’s holiest days. Meaning “head of the year” or “first of the year,” the festival begins on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar, which falls during September or October (begins at sunset September 18). Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion.

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” BIG Trouble!
A couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, who were excessively mischievous. They were always getting into trouble and their parents knew that if any mischief occurred in their town, their sons were probably involved. The boys’ mother heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her boys. The clergyman agreed, but asked to see them individually. So the mother sent her 8-year-old first, in the morning, with the older boy to see the clergyman in the afternoon. The clergyman, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger boy down and asked him sternly, “Where is God?” They boy’s mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting there with his mouth hanging open, wide-eyed. So the clergyman repeated the question in an even sterner tone, “Where is God?” Again the boy made no attempt to answer. So the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy’s face and bellowed, “WHERE IS GOD!?” The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran directly home and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him. When his older brother found him in the closet, he asked, “What happened?” The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied, “We are in BIG trouble this time, dude... God is missing -- and they think WE did it!” HARLEY DAVIDSON ENGINE REBUILDING, 30+ years experience, quick turn-around! by Karen Dustman William Ritchford was bound and determined to be a hotel owner. In March, 1893 he purchased the Gardnerville Hotel at the southwest corner of Main and Eddy Streets from Hans C. Jepsen. Here at his “fine hotel and saloon,” the accommodating new owner offered board and lodging by the day, week, or month. Patrons were promised not only “good wines, liquors and cigars,” but also an opportunity to try their luck at the card tables. Ritchford had a partner in his new endeavor, Hans Nelson, and for a time, things went swimmingly. In June of 1893, the pair were already planning an addition to their hotel to “accommodate the transient custom that nightly make this a stopping point,” as the Genoa Weekly Courier put it. But by March of 1894, Ritchford had sold out to Nelson for a bit more than $5,000, and was moving to Antelope Valley with his family. They weren’t gone long, however. By October of 1896, and by 1897, Bill Ritchford was operating a livery and feed business. But he still had HIS heart set on another hotel. About 1898, Ritchford purchased a large parcel on the west side of today’s “S”-curve, then the south end of Gardnerville. An early blacksmith shop occupied the south corner of the property, but the north part was vacant. By March, carpenters and stone masons were hard at work erecting a new hotel for Ritchford. Things didn’t get off to a terribly auspicious start. First, carpenter Henry Beste took a nasty fall at the under-construction hotel, confining him to bed rest for a day or two. Then the following week stone mason Henry Mathews, who’d been hired to lay the building’s foundation, suddenly passed away. But by mid-July, Ritchford and his family were able to move into their new hotel. The building was finished enough that the newspaper was able to report on its “imposing appearance,” including a cornice painted a patriotic red, white and blue. In November, 1898 Ritchford added a tall water tank to the property, bringing gravity-fed water to the new building. Genuine “horsepower” of the old-fashioned kind was used to lift the large tank into place. That September [1898], a “Grand House Warming” celebration and dance was advertised to celebrate. In deference to the size of the expected crowd, the event was held just up the street at the Valhalla Hall. Tickets for the event cost a pricey $2, but thoughtfully included not only supper for the humans but also “horse feed.” Even so, however, it appears the new hotel was still not quite complete. In June the following year, the Courier reported plans under way to “immediately finish” the third story of the hotel, “owing to the throng of people in Gardnerville.” Advertisements in the Genoa Courier by late 1899 cheerfully informed the traveling public that Ritchford’s new hotel was open for business. He had picked an auspicious name for it, too: “The Latest.” Guests could conveniently stable their horses at his livery a mere 38 feet to the south (likely a new incarnation of a former blacksmith shop). When finally completed, the Ritchford Hotel featured 20 “first-class” rooms. Mrs. Ritchford charmed guests with her cooking, including “sumptuous” turkey dinners. Bill made sure their horses received top care. The livery business did so well that in 1902 a “large addition” was made to the stable. And in

1903, in keeping with the hotel’s name, “The Latest,” Ritchford had his hotel electrified -- a significant improvement over its original gas lighting. Texan’s guide to life
Never squat with yer spurs on. There’s two theories to arguin’ with a woman; neither one works. Don’t worry about bitin’ off more than you can chew, your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger’n you think. If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around. Never smack a man who’s chewin’ tobacco. It don’t take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep. Never ask a barber if he thinks you need a haircut. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. Always drink upstream from the herd. If you’re ridin’ ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it’s still there. Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier ‘n puttin’ it back in. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Bible Study Mother-in-Law Discussion
A Bible group study leader says to his group, “What would you do if you knew you only had four weeks left before the great Judgment Day?” A gentleman says, ”I would go out into my community and minister the Gospel to those that have not yet accepted the Lord into their lives.” “Very good!” says the group leader. One lady speaks up and says enthusiastically, “I would dedicate all of my remaining time to serving God, my family, my church, and my fellow man with a greater conviction.” “That’s wonderful!” the group leader comments. One gentleman in the back finally speaks up loudly and says, “I would go to my mother-in-laws house for the four weeks.” The group leader asks, “Why your mother-in-law’s home?” “Because that will make it the longest four weeks of my life! I’m so glad that this is my last child support payment. Month after month, year after year, those payments! So I called my baby girl, Kareesha, to come over to my house, and when she got there, I said to her, “Baby girl, I want you to take this last check over to your mother’s house and tell her that this is the last check she’s ever going to get from me, and I want you to come back and tell me the expression that’s on her face.” So my baby girl took the check over to her. I was really anxious to hear what she had to say and what she looked like.. As my baby girl walked through the door, I said, “Now what did she have to say?” “She told me to tell you that you ain’t my daddy, and to watch the expression on your face.” ALPINE TREE SERVICE - TRIMMING, REMOVAL, grinding and lot clearing, no job too small, Licensed, Insured and over 35 years experience (775)721-2880 1929 ESSEX PROJECT, SUPER SIX 2 DOOR CHALLENGER Coach plus manuals, spare parts and lots of literature $4,595 (775)315-6487 NEVADA CCW CLASSES $50, EMAIL tacaimnv@gmail. com or call (775)360-5214

50 Shades of Golf
Two days before the group is to leave, John’s wife puts her foot down and tells him he isn’t going. John’s mates are very upset that he can’t go, but what can they do. Two days later, the three get to St Andrews only to find John sitting at the bar with four drinks set up! “Wow, John, how long you been here, and how did you talk your Missus into letting you go?” “Well, I’ve been here since last night... Yesterday evening, I was sitting in my living room chair and my wife came up behind me and put her hands over my eyes and asked, ‘Guess who?’ I pulled her hands off, and there she was, wearing a nightie. She took my hand and pulled me into our bedroom. She’s been reading ‘50 Shades of Grey’ and the room had candles and rose petals all over. On the bed she had handcuffs, and ropes! She told me to tie her up and cuff her to the bed, so I did. Then she said, “Do whatever you want. So, here I am!” WE ARE CONSTRUCTION BOOKKEEPING SPECIALISTS – Serving both general and specialty contractors with 30+ years of bookkeeping, payroll and tax experience. Germs, bacteria, parasites and pathogens. They’re everywhere, even a few places you wouldn’t think of. For instance, more germs are transferred when shaking someone’s hand versus kissing. Ten percent of your body weight is made up of bacteria, and even a clean mouth can have between 1,000 and 10,000 bacteria on each tooth. And that’s just the germs on our body. Think about the countless germs that could be on the surfaces that you touch every day. Bacteria Breeding Grounds; Your toothbrush: Where do you keep your toothbrush? Studies have shown that microorganisms are ejected when you flush the toilet, which may land on surfaces in your bathroom. Keep your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible and make sure it’s dry before you put it away. Moisture promotes bacteria growth. Your cell phone: According to a University of Arizona study, your cell phone may have 10 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. You should remove the case from your phone and disinfect it with antibacterial wipes. Consider doing the same for your ear buds or headphones. Your welcome mat: A study conducted at the University of Arizona found that 96 percent of shoe soles had trace amounts of coliform, a fecal bacteria. When you wipe your feet on the mat, you leave traces of those, which can be transferred to packages that are left at your door or the grocery bags that you put down while you unlock the door. A good washing with a disinfectant is recommended to help keep that bacteria out of the house. Your kitchen sponge: The sponge in the kitchen sink is said to be the most contaminated object in your home. Studies have found that it can be a breeding ground for MRSA, staphylococcus or salmonella. Try using your dishwasher as a cleaning tool for your sponge and consider switching your sponge out after you do really dirty dishes. Your desktop: When was the last time you cleaned your desk, keyboard or phone? There may be 400 times more bacteria on your desk than a toilet bowl. One-third of office surfaces contain the parainfluenza virus, which causes cold and flu. These types of germs can survive two to three days on your keyboard, computer mouse and phone. Think about disinfecting your desk the next time you sneeze or have a runny nose at work. Douse the Germs - You may drive yourself a little crazy thinking about how clean, or unclean, all surfaces are. Your best defense against everyday germs and bacteria is to disinfect your hands. Online Child Sexual Exploitation
Over 1.5 billion students worldwide have been impacted by school closures, leaving many vulnerable to sexual predators. Taking advantage of youngsters spending more time unsupervised online, perpetrators are seeking to groom and exploit children through sexual coercion and sextortion. Girls are particularly vulnerable, accounting for 90% of those featured in online child abuse materials. In addition, minors trapped at home with abusive relatives may become victims of the live-stream sex abuse trade and other lucrative forms of cybersex trafficking. Think of the internet as a big, open space. You wouldn’t drop your child off at a big public place like a mall for the day and expect everyone he meets to treat him with kindness and protect their best interests, would you? That is a good analogy for what happens when a child goes online unsupervised. Be sure to keep a close eye on exactly who your child is talking to and when.

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”
Why do people hate?
The reasons are complex, but following are some of the factors that may play a role in helping us understand hate and, hopefully, work toward change. Fear of “The Other” - According to A.J. Marsden, assistant professor of psychology and human services at Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida, one reason we hate is because we fear things that are different from us. Behavioral researcher Patrick Wanis, cites the in-group outgroup theory, which posits that when we feel threatened by perceived outsiders, we instinctively turn toward our in-group— those with whom we identify—as a survival mechanism. Wanis explains, “Hatred is driven by two key emotions of love and aggression: One love for the in-group—the group that is favored; and two, aggression for the out-group—the group that has been deemed as being different, dangerous, and a threat to the ingroup.” Fear of Ourselves - According to Washington, D.C., clinical psychologist Dana Harron, the things people hate about others are the things that they fear within themselves. She suggests thinking about the targeted group or person as a movie screen onto which we project unwanted parts of the self. The idea is, “I’m not terrible; you are.” This phenomenon is known as projection, a term coined by Freud to describe our tendency to reject what we don’t like about ourselves. Psychologist Brad Reedy further describes projection as our need to be good,
which causes us to project “badness” outward and attack it: “We developed this method to survive, for any ‘badness’ in us put us at risk for being rejected and alone. So we repressed the things that we thought were bad (what others told us or suggested to us that was unlovable and morally reprehensible) — and we employ hate and judgment towards others. We think that is how one rids oneself of undesirable traits, but this method only perpetuates repression which leads to many mental health issues. Lack of Self-compassion - The antidote to hate is compassion — for others as well as ourselves. Self-compassion means that we accept the whole self. “If we find part of ourselves unacceptable, we tend to attack others in order to defend against the threat,” says Reedy. “If we are okay with ourselves, we see others’ behaviors as ‘about them’ and can respond with compassion. If I kept hate in my heart for [another], I would have to hate myself as well. It is only when we learn to hold ourselves with compassion that we may be able to demonstrate it toward others.” It fills a void - Psychologist Bernard Golden believes that when hate involves participation in a group, it may help foster a sense of connection and camaraderie that fills a void in one’s identity. He describes hatred of individuals or groups as a way of distracting oneself from the more challenging and anxietyprovoking task of creating one’s own identity: “Acts of hate are attempts to distract oneself from feelings such as helplessness, powerlessness, injustice, inadequacy and shame. Hate is grounded in some sense of perceived threat. It is an attitude that can give rise to hostility and aggression toward individuals or groups. Like much of anger, it is a reaction to and distraction from some form of inner pain. The individual consumed by hate may believe that the only way to regain some sense of power over his or her pain is to preemptively strike out at others. In this context, each moment of hate is a temporary reprieve from inner suffering.” Writing the Editor - We welcome all articles, letters, jokes and comments on Sierra Scoop, local issues, community news and free private party ads, published as space provides. Hillbilly in Hospital
A hillbilly was making his first visit to a hospital where his teenage son was about to have an operation. Watching the doctor’s every move, he asked, “What’s that?” The doctor explained, “This is an anesthetic. After he gets this he won’t know anything that’s going on.” “Save your time, Doc,” exclaimed the man. “He don’t know nothing now.” “One of the disadvantages of wine is that it makes a man mistake words for thoughts.” unknown

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Brought out the best in all of us
“Remember the hours after September 11th when we came together as one to answer the attack against our homeland. We drew strength when our firefighters ran upstairs and risked their lives so that others might live; when rescuers rushed into smoke and fire at the Pentagon; when the men and women of Flight 93 sacrificed themselves to save our nation’s Capitol; when flags were hanging from front porches all across America, and strangers became friends. It was the worst day we have ever seen, but it brought out the best in all of us.” – Senator John Kerry GLASS WINDSHIELD FOR 2018 STAMPEDE SIDE by side $85; 13 bundles roofing shingles, Onyx black $200, Cliff (775)790-2338 BOB’S BIRD HOUSES, YARD TOOLS, LOG SPLITTER, SNOW blower plus tent yard sale, September 5th-7th 9am?, clothes, etc, plus fresh garden veggies and pork verde burritos for sale, 3825 Pebble Road, Topaz Ranch Estates (775)266-3699 BATTLE BORN BLADE SHARPENING LLC: We are Mobile!! Wisdom from Grandpa
Whether a man winds up with a nest egg, or a goose egg, depends a lot on the kind of chick he marries. Trouble in marriage often starts when a man gets so busy earnin’ his salt, that he forgets his sugar. Too many couples marry for better, or for worse, but not for good. When a man marries a woman, they become one; but the trouble starts when they try to decide which one. If a man has enough horse sense to treat his wife like a thoroughbred, she will never turn into an old nag. On anniversaries, the wise husband always forgets the past - but never the present. A foolish husband says to his wife, “Honey, you stick to the washin’, ironin’, cookin’, and scrubbin’. No wife of mine is gonna work.” The bonds of matrimony are a good investment, only when the interest is kept up. Many girls like to marry a military man - he can cook, sew, and make beds, and is in good health, and he’s already used to taking orders. One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young.
