1940 Farmer’s Wife
Fix a HUGE breakfast for the family – ham, potatoes, applesauce, hot biscuits, and anything else left in the cupboard. Wash all the dishes by hand. Help with milking the cows – squirting a little bit into the cat’s mouths that are sitting there watching every move you make, and hoping you haven’t forgotten them. Strain the milk, save the cream in the five gallon milk can because the dairy pays a little bit for it, which helps. Feed the strained milk back to the chickens and pigs. I’ve tried making cottage cheese, but it never tasted like Walter’s mothers’ so the animals enjoyed it all. Get the children off to school. Time to wash all those little discs that strained the milk. If there is enough cream, now make butter..on an old fashioned butter churn. Straighten up the house and make the beds. Start weeding the garden, and perhaps find enough vegetables for dinner and supper. Dig around the base of the potato plants for the little potatoes–they are delicious at this size. Green beans are prolific. Maybe there is a squash, too. If apples are ripe, make a couple of pies, or take some cherries out of the freezer for a treat. If you baked bread yesterday, just add some excellent homemade jam for a taste treat. Mother Johnson also had bees and would col-

lect honey. That was really good with hot bread. Dinner and supper were the same big meals, just change the meat to beef or pork, add fresh vegetables and those pies you made earlier, and everyone had a big meal. Bring the cows back across Center Road from the meadow behind the house to the barn to be milked. Sometimes I drove the tractor to help Walter pick up the lugs of cherries from the migrants after they picked the trees. This was before mechanical cherry pickers, of course. By dark we were all ready for bed. It had been a typical day for us. In spite of the work, I loved being here, and doing all the things I’d never done before. I never heard my husband, Walter, complain about anything either. Maybe he was surprised that a city girl could adapt to the country life so well. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Hidden in Plain Sight: The Old East Fork School By Karen Dustman
Get me a beer
A man comes home from an exhausting day at work, plops down on the couch in front of the television, and tells his wife, “Get me a beer before it starts.” The wife sighs and gets him a beer. Fifteen minutes later, the man says, “Get me another beer before it starts.” She looks cross, but fetches another beer and slams it down next to him. He finishes that beer and a few minutes later says, “Quick, get me another beer, it’s going to start any minute.” The wife is furious. She yells at him, “Is that all you’re going to do tonight? Drink beer and sit in front of that TV? You’re nothing but a lazy, drunken, fat slob, and furthermore...” The man sighs and says, “It’s started...” PORSCHES WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE! September 2nd- Labor Day 6
That old wooden building at Gardnerville’s “S” bend? The one sadly in need of paint and with a hole punched in its side from a car accident? Well, it once was the pride of East Fork! Here’s the tale! A small schoolhouse was already serving pupils in the East Fork School District, south of Gardnerville, as early as 1876. Parents were so unhappy with the school’s location, however, that a vote was held that year to compel its removal to “a more central” spot. Back then, folks thought nothing of dismantling an entire building and then hammering back together again somewhere else. Soon, that early East Fork school had been spirited off to its new and improved location. After its move, the reconstructed school was sitting just north of Wheeler’s Twelve Mile House (today’s Smoke Shop) and three miles south of Gardnerville, perched on the east side of the river and across from the Wilslef home. No bridges crossed the river there, however. “In the spring when the water was high, there wasn’t much school,” Peter Wilslef once chuckled in an interview with the Record-Courier. But simply moving the building to this new, morefelicitous location wasn’t enough for the ambitious school district. By July 1880, bids were being taken to construct a spanking new school building. Miss Emma Jennison, the East Fork teacher in those days, must have been heartily pleased when her fresh building was completed. As for the old, original school, it wasn’t forgotten as a potential revenue source, either; the empty shell was auctioned off to the highest bidder in December, 1880. Waste not, want not. Local parents aspired to make the East Fork School the “best schoolhouse in the county, outside of Genoa.” So after the new building was up, additional improvements quickly followed. New desks were purchased for the pupils in 1882, and a “fine Chapel organ” was acquired in 1884. Somewhere along the line, the school acquired a warm and welcoming school bell, too. The school building served as a meeting place for the whole East Fork community. Sunday services were held inside its walls for decades. And when voting time rolled around, the schoolhouse was converted to a polling place. On Christmas Eve, 1884, the entire East Fork community gathered there around a communal Christmas tree to exchange presents and greet Henry Beste, all dressed up as Santa. Enterprising teachers pulled together “programmes” for the enjoyment of the community, with students as the entertainment. Fidgeting youngsters would recite carefullymemorized pieces and sing off-key but chipper songs.

Much to the delight of parents, sometimes those memorized tunes were even sung in German. Fees for admission to these gala events (50 cents a head) went toward purchasing new books for the school’s library. Teachers were a precious commodity, and not just for the book-learning they dispensed. Marriage-age female teachers, often from other towns, could be important additions to the local gene pool. One teacher followed another at the East Fork School in rapid succession, typically leaving when a husband or a better position was found. Following Miss Emma Jennison behind the teacher’s desk in the classroom were Julia McCord, Ida Pettegrew, Kate Nevin, and May Tierney. Miss Hattie Cushing, one of the longest-lasting East Fork schoolmarms, taught there from September 1893 through 1902 before moving on to teach at Mono Lake. Competition among districts to snag the best teachers could be intense. Miss Eugenia Arnot, daughter of Alpine County Judge N.D. Arnot, was lured away from her post at the Gardnerville School in July, 1902 with a can’t-refuse offer of $70 per month to teach at East Fork A twenty-five percent increase over what she previously had been making. In its hey-day, East Fork School attendance ranged from roughly twenty to forty students. Those who learned their ‘Three R’s’ within its walls reads a bit like a “Who’s
Who” of old Carson Valley: Allerman, Bartels, Berning, Frantzen, Hussman, Dangberg, Jacobsen, Robishaw, Rodenbah, Settelmeyer, Springmeyer, Syll. Kids arrived in carts and aboard wagons, on horseback, and by foot. But by 1915, the East Fork School had outlived its usefulness. Its twin doors (one for boys, one for girls) were closed for good. Such a sturdy wooden building couldn’t go to waste, however. Henry Elges bought the structure and moved it near the “S” bend in Gardnerville, to become Elges’ “green goods and vegetable store.” Elges was followed by John and Norma Ellis, who briefly operated their own grocery store there. By the mid-1930s it had become the Gardnerville Laundry, operated by George Oka before being acquired in August, 1940 by the Nishikida family, which continued to own the establishment for over 25 years. Today, almost no one gives this humble wooden building a second glance. But next time you drive by, we hope you’ll remember its past. Not so very long ago, it was the pride of East Fork parents, the cheerful roof under which a community once gathered. Listen carefully and maybe, just maybe, you’ll catch the faint echo of a welcoming school bell. Karen Dustman’s most recent book, “Forgotten Tales of Carson Valley,” is just out -- find it at Amazon.com.

Needs
A husband and wife are getting all snugly in bed and the husband is feeling pretty frisky. But then the wife stops and says, “I don’t feel like it. I just want you to hold me.” The husband says “WHAT???” The wife explains that he must not be in tune with her emotional needs as a woman. The husband realizes that nothing is going to happen tonight and he might as well deal with it. So the next day the husband takes her shopping at a big department store. He walks around and has her try on three very expensive outfits. And then tells his wife, “We’ll take all three of them.” Then goes over and gets matching shoes worth $200 each. And then goes to the jewelry department and gets a set of diamond earrings. The wife is so excited (she thinks her husband has flipped out, but she does not care). She goes for the tennis bracelet. The husband says “but you don’t even play tennis, but
8
ok, if you like it then let’s get it.’ The wife is jumping up and down. So excited she cannot even believe what is going on. She says “I am ready to go, lets go to the cash register. “ The husband says, “No no no, honey we’re not going to buy all this stuff.” The wife face goes blank. “No honey - I just want you to HOLD this stuff for a while.” Her face gets really red, she is about to explode and then the husband say’s “You must not be in tune with my financial needs as a MAN!” FAMOUS MEADOWCLIFF RESTAURANT – Can be sold as turnkey restaurant (2,100 sf, seats up to 40) or the building would be perfect for another type of commercial use. Like most folks in this country, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck in my case, I am required to pass a random urine test (with which I have no problem). What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don’t have to pass a urine test. So, here is my Question: Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their ass - doing drugs, while I work… Can you imagine how much money each state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check? I guess we could title that program, ‘Urine or You’re Out’. Something has to change in this country -- and soon!!!!!!! When I think of the 70’s, I think of the greatest rock and roll music ever. It is now included in a music genre that is known today as ‘classic rock.’ Besides being the best decade for rock and roll, the 70’s also held its own in terms of slang words and/or phrases. I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. For sure, the best slang words/phrases came from the 60’s... “Can you dig it?” “Far Out!” “Right On!” “Groovy!” “Outta sight!” “Heavy man!” “Hey Man!” “Peace!” and “What a drag!”...and many of those terms carried on into the 70’s. “Groovy,” a favorite word for anything fun, cool, or interesting. “Far out!”, “Outta sight!” and “Right on” were phrases you could use to respond to something that was beyond groovy. While those words/phrases covered a lot of ground, it certainly didn’t end there in the 70’s. The hippest smooth talkers of the 70’s had a lingo all their own -- all our own. Like the African-American jazz musicians of the day, we were “cool cats, baby!” Hahaha. “Can you dig it?” “Right on, man!” The 70’s were my teenage years. Many slang terms came from TV shows and movies: “Looking Good” (Chico and the Man) “Dy-no-mite!” (J.J. on Good Times) “Up Your Nose with A Rubber Hose!” (Welcome Back, Kotter) “Well Excuuuuse me!” (Saturday Night Live/ Steve Martin) “May the force be with you” (Star Wars, 1977). The 70’s CB radio craze gave us...“10-4, Good Buddy” and “What’s your 20?” Slang sarcasm replies were the rage in the 70’s... “Your Mother,” which became “Your Mama,” which became “Joe Mama.” Other slang sarcasm replies were: “Buzz off!” “Smooth move, Ex Lax!” “Take a chill pill!” or, “Chill out!”and one that I used quite often ...”NO DUH!” Greetings and taking your leave in the 70’s were never as simple as hello and goodbye. You greeted someone with “What it is?” or “What’s up blood?” or “Slap me some skin” or “Gimme some skin, man!” or “Gimme me five, man!” or “What it is!” or “What’s happenin’ man?” or “What’s up, dude?” On your way out the door you might say “Peace out” or “Catch You On The Flip-side!” or “Check You Later!” or “I’m Audie!” or “Let’s Boogie!” or “Let’s book it!” or “Pardy, Hardy!” or “Rock On!” If you liked something, you said “Cool” or “Stellular” or “Tubular!” or “That’s wicked” or “Cool Beans” or “Dude!” or “Tough” or my favorite ...”WOWZER!” Speaking of ‘Dude,’ the opposite was ‘Dudette.’ We also called her “Foxy Mama!” If you liked something, you said: “Outta Sight!” or “Neato!” or “Killer,” which meant “COOL!” Cont...

Invitations ended with, “Be there or be square!” “Bad” meant “very good,” as in “The new Foghat album is BAD!” Everything ended with the word ‘City.’ “Keep On Truckin’” meant “Move that lunch line along!” In the latter half of the 70s, disco ruled the clubs and launched some famous slang into the popular vocabulary. If someone you know started to dance, you gave them encouragement with a hearty, “Get Down” or “Boogie!” or “Let It All Hang Out!” or “Shake your groove thing or, thang.” One of the biggest songs that came out of the 70’s is “Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry (1976). While the term “Funky” evolved out of the music scene, it came to mean something cool and different, rather than its original musical connotation. Speaking of...if I were real hungry, I would ‘scarf’ down an entire bag of chips. To be cool or hip in the 50’s and 60’s meant you were “the Bomb.” To be ‘otherwise’ but to think you might be cool in the 70’s meant you were a “Jive Turkey.” Speaking of jive, the term “Jive Talking” encompassed the entire subset of slang, but within the jive vocabulary, it meant you were spouting nonsense or speaking in a
way that was difficult to understand (Airplane, 1980). A favorite slang term in the hallways at my high school was “Sike.” It was said if someone faked you put (pulled your leg) in some way. A Scandinavian origin for the word ‘Slang’ suggests the same root as that of ‘Sling,’ which means “to throw” and notes that ‘Slang’ is a thrown language, a quick, honest way to make your point. When he was in elementary school, my oldest son one day described something as being “tight.” Although I didn’t understand it, he was using a slang word for ‘cool.’ While slang words/phrases change with time, I am hoping that many of the words/phrases I used in the 60’s and 70’s will at least hang around for a while longer. I am doing my part to keep them going. Well, it’s time to “split the scene.” “Y’all keep it real!” (Author unknown) HANDYMAN FOR ALL YOUR OUTSIDE NEEDS, yard cleanup, power wash, fence repair, minor jobs, free estimates, NV#11376PC (775)246-9899 WANTED: KNIVES – FOLDING, HUNTING; MILITARY, New or used, any quantity. How Much Are Teens Using Cell Phones? A September 2018 Pew Research Center study found that 92 percent of American teens go online daily, and the percentage increases to 94 percent for teens with access to a smartphone. Nearly 75 percent of teens have access to a smartphone, and with open Wi-Fi networks in schools, libraries, and at home, staying connected is effortless. For teens, being connected to the internet also means being connected to friends through various social media platforms and texting applications, such as WhatsApp. Educators are battling for attention as a student’s focus is directed to the recent notification that has lit up the student’s screen rather than the lesson at the front of the class. As a result, educators and researchers are asking if cell phones should be allowed in school and if a balance between tool and distraction is possible. Digital Disruption - Research from Asurion found that Americans check their phones every 12 minutes, and with smartphones’ functioning as our alarm clocks, appointment keepers, and even house keys, it is easy to understand why we are so easily distracted. Teachers already struggle with maintaining students’ attention during class, and with cell phones’ providing other ways to “escape” the classroom, many teachers feel that students’ grades have declined as a result. Research supports this theory and has shown that multitasking can be detrimental to one’s academic performance. Checking Facebook while listening to a class lecture can actually increase the amount of time that students will have to study at home since they did not absorb the content fully in the lecture. The distraction provided by social media apps, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, can potentially lead to signs of addiction as well—users may experience some form of agitation or anxiety when their phones aren’t around. There are even preliminary research findings that longer periods spent on digital devices correlate to decreased feelings of mental well-being. It’s a strong case against the use of cell phones in school, and some schools have even implemented a zerotolerance policy for the use of cell phones. There is not yet enough research, however, and educators, parents, and students are still divided on if cell phones should be allowed in school. Life choices...
An older man was married to a younger woman. After several years of a very happy marriage, he had a heart attack. The doctor advised him that in order to prolong his life, they should cut out romance. He and his wife discussed the matter and decided that he should sleep in the family room downstairs to save them both from temptation. One night, after several weeks of this, he decided that life without romance wasn’t worth living. So he headed upstairs. He met his wife on the staircase and said, “I was coming to die.” She laughed and replied, “I was just coming down to kill you!” THOMASVILLE “AMERICAN OAK” BEDROOM furniture, 12 drawer dresser with tri-mirror, 2 nightstands, chest of drawers paid $4,600, now $1,550; New ‘Love Seat’, paid $430, asking $170 (530)694-2557

History of the Drive-In Movie Theater
It was in 1933 that Richard Hollingshead opened the first theater for the auto-bound in Camden, N.J. People paid 25 cents per car as well as per person to see the British comedy Wives Beware under the stars. The concept of showing movies outdoors wasn’t novel; people often watched silent films on screens set up at beaches or other places boasting an abundance of sky. However, it took an auto-parts salesman such as Hollingshead to see the genius in giving a car-loving society one more activity they could do in their vehicles. He first conceived the drive-in as the answer to a problem. “His mother was—how shall I say it? Rather large for indoor theater seats,” said Jim Kopp of the United Drive-in Theatre Owners Association. “So he stuck her in a car and put a 1928 projector on the hood of the car, and tied two sheets to trees in his yard.” Hollingshead experimented for a few years before he created a ramp system for cars to park at different heights so everyone could see the screen. He patented his concept in May 1933 and opened the gates to his theater the next month. The second drive-in, Shankweiler’s, started a year later in Orefields, PA. A few others followed, but the concept didn’t really get traction until the advent of in-car speakers in the early 1940s. By 1958, the number of drive-ins peaked at 4,063. “Drive-ins started to really take off in the ‘50s,” Kopp said. “They offered family entertainment. People could sit in their cars, they could bring their babies, they could smoke. Drive-ins offered more flexibility than indoor theaters.” The indoor theaters were more flexible about scheduling, however, and could show one film five or six times a day instead of only at night. So to sell as many tickets as possible, the movie studios sent their first-runs to the indoor theaters. Drive-ins were left to show B movies and, eventually, X-rated ones. And being naughty helped some drive-ins survive. Today some 400 or so drive-ins remain in the United States. Another 100 drive-ins exist outside the United States, mainly in Canada and Australia. Kopp said the concept is suddenly becoming popular in China. More than 75 percent of the drive-ins in this country are privately owned small businesses, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. CALLING ALL CONTRACTORS. A serious drunk walked into a bar and, after staring for some time at the only woman seated at the bar, walked over to her and kissed her. She jumped up and slapped him silly. Visit to the Car Dealer
One day, an elderly woman was walking along the street, coming home from the supermarket. Her bag of groceries was especially heavy that day, and as she passed Nathan Hale’s Used Cars, she got an idea that she could drive herself to the store and save a lot of shoe leather, time and aching muscles. She walks into the car dealership and, as it just so happens, gets the owner himself. He asks her what kind of car she wants and she replies, “Well, sonny, I can’t remember the name exactly, but it has something to do with hate or anger.” The owner replies, “Well, let’s see... Oh yes, you want a Plymouth Fury! We have a couple on the lot. What color do you prefer?” The lady has some trouble explaining the exact color to him, so she reaches into her shopping bag, takes out an ear of corn, strips down the shucks and says, “I want this color sonny.” To which Nathan replies, “Ma’am I’m sorry, but we don’t have any in this color. Could I show you a nice blue one?” “No son, I want this color.” “But ma’am, they didn’t make that color! Maybe a cherry red one would suit you?” says the owner, obviously worried about losing a sale. continued.....
By this time, the old lady gets mad, and starts throwing things at the owner, thereby chasing him out of the office and into the lot. One of the salesmen, coming into the office from the back door, notices the disruption and asks the secretary what the old woman was so upset about. The secretary replies, “Apparently, Hale hath no Fury like the woman’s corn!” PATIO GLIDER WITH NEW CUSHIONS $40, FOUR aluminum lawn chairs $20; Ryobi circular saw with case $50; roll of roofing felt $5; six cast iron pipe stands $10 each; small vintage Skil saw (it runs) $10, Carson City (775)762-2220 ALPINE TREE SERVICE - TRIMMING, REMOVAL, grinding and lot clearing, no job too small, Licensed, Insured and over 35 years experience (775)721-2880 12,000 BTU AIR CONDITIONER STILL IN CARTON $200, 8am-8pm (775)781-3767 ESTATE SALE! If there’s an insect fountain of youth, the termite queen must be drinking from it. Termite queens can live up to 50 years. Though some bug species can live to be oldtimers, most live for only a few days or even a few hours. How long bugs live depends on several factors, including species, sex, caste and life cycle. Fire Ants - Although fire ant queens live between two and six years on average, the record is seven years. The male fire ant lifespan is much shorter, as they tend to live between one and six months. The queen is the most important member of the colony, depositing up to 1,000 eggs a day. The sole function of the male is to mate with an unfertilized reproductive female. After mating occurs, the male dies. Bed Bugs - An adult bed bug lives anywhere from four months to more than a year with the right conditions. Bed bugs can go an entire year without feeding, survive temperatures ranging between freezing and 122 degrees Fahrenheit and are constantly evolving, even adapting to resist standard insecticides. Bees - A queen honey bee lives two to three years, on average, with a few species living up to five years. On average, worker bees live for five to six weeks in the summer. During the winter months, a worker may live up to six months in order to help sustain the hive and raise new workers for spring. A worker bee can only sting once and dies after stinging its victim. It stings to protect the hive or when it feels threatened. Cockroaches - Cockroaches can live up to a couple of years, depending on the species. Cockroaches can even live up to a week without a head. The lifespan of the adult female German cockroach varies from 20 to 30 weeks. The average lifespan for adult American cockroach females is about 440 days. Adult American cockroaches can live approximately a year to a year and a half. Fleas - Fleas can travel through an entire life cycle (egg, larvae, pupae, adult) in as little as two weeks or as long as a year or more. Larval fleas spin cocoons to enter the pupal stage and can remain in their case until they sense the vibrations of food source nearby — this could be weeks. That’s how fleas can suddenly seem to be everywhere — they’ve been waiting for the right moment to spring into adulthood. Adult fleas can live roughly two weeks without a host, while their pupa can live for several months. Flies - Most flies live between 15 and 25 days. In fact, flies reach full adult maturity after just 12 days. Once mature, the female house fly can lay up to 150 eggs at a time in a batch. She can lay about five or

six batches before she dies. Flies move quickly from egg (eight to 20 hours) to their three larval/maggot stage (taking three days to eight weeks depending on the climate) to the pupal stage (four to six days) and finally, to adulthood (approximately ten days). It’s interesting to note that the temperature can affect how quickly flies mature, as the warmer the weather the faster flies will grow and reproduce. Mosquitoes - Adult female mosquitoes can live for more than one month. Males typically die one to two weeks after they become adults. Female mosquitoes — the ones that bite — rely on blood meals to give them the nutrients they need to reproduce. After their blood meal, they lay their eggs — sometimes a single egg (certain Aedes mosquitoes), sometimes as many as 300 at a time (Culex spp.) — in or near bodies of water. Eggs hatch and become larvae or wigglers. Wigglers move into the pupal stage as quickly as their species and surrounding weather dictates, but typically a few days. Pupa become adults in just two to seven days and are then on the hunt for either nectar or blood to start the cycle over again. Mosquitoes can spend anywhere from four days to one month in the water, which is why it’s imperative to rid your property of standing water to help control the mosquito population.
28
Spiders - Most spiders live about two years but some have been known to live up to 20 years when in captivity. Female spiders tend to live longer than male spiders. Many male spiders reach maturity within two years and die after mating. This is often because female spiders eat them. Termites - A worker termite may live from one to two years. A queen termite can live for decades, up to 50 years in some species. Ticks - Ticks can live as long as three to five months between each stage (egg, larva, nymph, adult). Ticks that require multiple molts before reaching maturity can take up to three years to reach full adulthood. Once a tick has reached maturity, its sole purpose is to reproduce. A male tick will die soon after mating. Some female ticks lay one large batch of eggs before dying while others will lay a few smaller batches before reaching the end of their life. Egg laying may last several days to a few weeks for adults. Some species complete a life cycle in as few as 90 days, others take a year and a few require two years to complete a life cycle (egg, larva, nymph, adult). Holistic Pet Health
Just like us, our pets can benefit from a healthy lifestyle. I have a 14 year old dog, struggling with weak joints, loss of hearing, and declining sight, but she is crazy with anticipation for her next meal. Good nutrition is essential at any pet’s age. Whole foods can provide them with an abundance of protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can repair, rebuild, and maintain all their body systems, especially by strengthening their immune system. Choosing healthy dog food can be a challenge but recognizing preservatives, additives, and synthetic chemicals is no different than reading labels on our food packages. The best option is making your own dog food, but this may be time consuming for many people. Wet dog food is better than dry because it is canned fresh; there is more moisture content, and not exposed to high heat. Dry kibble is manufactured using high heat, destroying enzymes and vitamins and making
the protein hard to digest. For my aging dog, I give her additional supplements to help with inflammation and digestion including probiotics, joint formula, CBD oil, turmeric, ginger, flax meal, greens, spirulina, juice pulp, and coconut oil. Optimal health for our furry companions is not only about nutrition, but considering other lifestyle aspects. Dogs need continual exercise to lubricate their joints. Good teeth hygiene helps prevent disease, and fur brushing stimulate the oils in their skin for a soft coat. Exposure to toxic chemicals, electromagnetic fields, and flame-retardants embedded in commercial dog beds can also be harmful to our pets. Most important pets need lots of love! George and Lenny decide to cross North America in a hot air balloon. However, neither were particularly experienced balloonists, and Lenny’s mind quickly drifted from navigation to thoughts of how clouds look like cuddly little bunny rabbits. Upon realizing that they were lost, George declared, “Lenny -- we are going to have to lose some altitude so we can figure out where we are.” George lets some hot air out of the balloon, which slowly descended below the clouds, but he still couldn’t tell where they were. Far below, they could see a man on the ground. George lowered the balloon, to ask the man their location. When they were low enough, George called down to the man, “Hey, can you tell us where we are?” The man on the ground yelled back, “You’re in a balloon, about 100 feet up in the air.” George Called down to the man, “You must be a lawyer.” “Gee, George,” Lenny replied, “How can you tell?” George answered, “Because the advice he gave us is 100% accurate, and is completely useless”. The man called back up to the balloon, “You must be a client.” George yelled back, “Why do you say that?” “Well,” the man replied, “you don’t know where you are, or where you are going. You got into your predicament through a lack of planning, and could have avoided it by asking for help before you acted. You expect me to provide an instant remedy. Chewy Peanuts
A tour bus driver drives with a bus full of seniors down a highway, when he is tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady. She offers him a handful of peanuts, which he gratefully munches up. After approximately 15 minutes, she taps him on his shoulder again and she hands him another handful of peanuts. She repeats this gesture about eight times. At the sixth time he asks the little old lady why they do not eat the peanuts themselves, whereupon she replies that it is not possible because of their old teeth, they are
not able to chew them. “Why do you buy them then?” he asks puzzled. Whereupon the old lady answers, “We just like the chocolate around them.” TAKE CARE OF YOUR LOVED ONES. WILLS and Trusts. Day R. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” A Royal Pain in the ...
A big-shot businessman had to spend a couple of days in the hospital. He was a royal pain to the nurses because he bossed them around just like he did his employees. None of the hospital staff wanted to have anything to do with him. The head nurse was the only one who could stand up to him. She came into his room and announced, “I have to take your temperature.” After complaining for several minutes, he finally settled down, crossed his arms and opened his mouth. “No, I’m sorry,” the nurse stated, “but for this reading, I cannot use an oral thermometer.” This started another round of complaining, but eventually he rolled over and bared his bottom. After feeling the nurse insert the thermometer, he heard her announce, “I have to get something. Now you stay JUST LIKE THAT until I get back.” She left the door to his room open on her way out. He cursed under his breath as he heard people walking past his door, laughing. After almost an hour, the man’s doctor came into the room. “What’s going on here?” asked the doctor. Angrily, the man answered, .... continued

Stewed Tomatoes
A guy is going on an ocean cruise, and he tells his doctor that he’s worried about getting seasick. The doctor suggests, ‘’Eat two pounds of stewed tomatoes before you leave the dock.’’ The guy replies, ‘’Would that keep me from getting sick, Doc?’’ The doctor says, ‘’No, but it’ll look real pretty in the water.’’ Writing the Editor - We welcome all articles, letters, jokes and comments on Sierra Scoop, local issues, community news and free private party ads, published as space provides. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Little Things
It is said that, the head of a major company survived the tragedy of “9/11” in New York because his son started kindergarten. Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts. One woman was late because her alarm clock didn’t go off in time. One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident. One of them missed his bus. One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change. One’s car wouldn’t start. One went back to answer the telephone. One had a child that dawdled and didn’t get ready as soon as he should have. One couldn’t get a taxi. The one that struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took the various means to get to work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today. Now when I am stuck in traffic...miss an elevator... turn back to answer a ringing telephone... all the little things that annoy me... I think to myself... this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment. The next time your morning seems to be going wrong, the children are slow getting dressed, you can’t seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light... don’t get mad or frustrated; God is at work watching over you.
One Wish…
A man exploring the ancient Pyramids of Egypt while on vacation stumbled across a secret room. He sneaked away from the tour group and explored the room. He found a dusty lamp and picked it up. While he wiped the dust off the lamp a genie appeared in a puff of smoke. “For freeing me from my prison, I will grant you a wish, what will it be sire?” The man thought for a moment, then said, “I want a spectacular job, a job that no man has ever succeeded at or has ever attempted to do.” “Allah Ka Zam!” said the genie. “You’re a housewife!” WANTED: LICENSE PLATES AND FRAMES, WANTED: Musical instruments, Wanted: Motorcycle helmets 1940-1980, John (775)315-4930 MUST SELL! Wedding Plans
A young woman brought her fiancé home to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother told her father to find out about the young man. The father invited the fiancé to his study for a talk. “So what are your plans?” the father asked the young man. “I am a biblical scholar,” he replied. “A Biblical scholar. Hmmm,” the father said. “Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter to live in?” “I will study,” the young man replied, ”and God will provide for us.” “And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?” asked the father. “I will concentrate on my studies,” the young man replied, “God will provide for us.” “And children?” asked the father. “How will you support children?” “Don’t worry, sir, God will provide,” replied the fi-

ancé. The conversation proceeded like this, and each time the father questioned, the young idealist insisted that God would provide. Later, the mother asked, “How did it go, Honey?” The father answered, “He has no job and no plans, and he thinks I’m God.” RESIDENTIAL CLEANING, LICENSED, BONDED and insured with references, Free estimates, great cleaning, fair prices, Samantha (775)220-4252

Everything I need to know about life...
I learned from Noah’s Ark... One: Don’t miss the boat. Two: Remember that we are all in the same boat. Three: Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark. Four: Stay fit - When you’re 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big. Five: Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done. Six: Build your future on high ground. Seven: For safety sake, travel in pairs. Eight: Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs. Nine: When you’re stressed, float a while. Ten: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals. Eleven: No matter the storm, there’s always a rainbow waiting. Twelve: You may want to leave the woodpeckers off of the ark.
