Funny Parent Fibs Told to Their Kids

1. “Sleeping with different blankets give you different dreams. If you have a nightmare you can make it go away if you change the blanket. Then you can have a fun dream!” 2. “No, we’re not there yet.” “Hey, did you know that if you sit real quiet in the car, it makes the car go faster so you’ll get there quicker?” 3. My dad had some good ones: “Toys R Us is a museum, so no, we can’t bring anything home.” And, “All the animals at the zoo are different kinds of dogs.” 4. This is not exactly a lie, but I taught my kid to jump up and yell “Ta - Da” whenever she fell down as a toddler. So, when she comes running down the sidewalk, trips and falls, she jumps right up and yells: “Ta - Da”. 5. When I was a kid, I was horribly afraid of monsters coming into my room. My mom filled a spray bottle with water and blue food coloring and printed a sticker that said “Monster Spray”. Boom, no monsters. One day she filled the bottle with clear normal water by accident. But that clever girl, she just told me it was new and improved monster spray that took care of invisible monsters, too. Mom was so smart! 6. As a teacher of small children, I tell the students that the smoke detectors are remote control cameras. Every time one of them obviously lies, I say to them: “I’ll just go check the camera recordings and see who’s right”, and they fess up. Works every time. 7. When my preschoolers play together, often with other preschoolers, sometimes they pass gas in the excitement of their play time. Then they look at each other, trying to figure out who did it. I tell them, “When you fart, it makes your ears get warm.” The one who touches their ears to check is usually the offender. 8. We told our kids that the ice cream truck was really the music truck. It worked for 4 years. They never begged to run out and get ice cream when the ice cream truck drove by. 9. “Yes Jason, if you put a slice of ham in the disc drive of your computer it will play a short informational video about pigs.” 10. “I told my little sister that humans start their lives off as dogs. It was so funny, she waited patiently for our dog to turn into a human so she wouldn’t be the youngest child in the family.” 11. We tell our four-year-old that eating helps her grow big and strong, but that if she refuses to eat she will not only shrink, but age backward. Then she won’t be able to go on her favorite carnival rides or roller coasters. We point out short adults and tell her they aren’t eating right and are shrinking. 12. Introduce your children to the music of Weird Al Yankovic, without telling them his songs are parodies. Then, when they are teenagers at a party, they’ll tell their friends all the “classic” songs are just remakes and rip offs of Weird Al’s songs. 13. I have a veritable army of young cousins. So many, in fact, that I’ve lost count around 40 or so. I tell them all the same lie when I bring them to Disneyland: “All the dolls in It’s a Small World used to be children. Children who cried at Disneyland.” Continued on next page...

14. When my kid started losing teeth I showed him Dwayne “The Rock” “The Tooth Fairy” Johnson and his amazing role as a tooth fairy. I then showed him the rock in WWE. I told him they are tooth fairy fights and the object is to knock each other’s teeth out. He now thinks all wrestlers are tooth fairies and have to go out at night and collect teeth to replace the ones they loose and get ready for their next fight. 15. I told a bunch of kids at a park that all seagulls are named Steven. They didn’t even pause to question me, they all just started giggling and yelling, “Hi, Steven!” I guess my audience was too young to get the joke. (with a wink and a nod to Mr. Steven Seagal). By Karen Dustman The historic log jail at the Alpine County Museum in Markleeville, that is! Built in 1867, these two heavy iron cells were originally destined for the new jail at Silver Mountain City -- then a mining boomtown. Silver Mountain City was Alpine County’s original county seat and a quintessential mining town, back in the days of the Comstock Lode. Think hard-drinking miners; armed barroom brawls; spats over mining claims — yes, a local hoosegow was a totally necessary structure. And the reason for a new jail: restless prisoners had attempted to burn down the town’s log jail. A new stone jail building was going to solve all that. So plans were drawn and bids were let. Constructed of volcanic stone quarried from the nearby cliffs, the new jail was projected to cost some $4,000 — more money than the fledgling county really had. But never mind that! The contract was signed, and funds pilfered from the Hospital Fund to help pay for it. A cornerstone-laying ceremony was held in May, 1867. Some fifty supportive citizens and at least three Supervisors attended. These three were likely secretly rubbing their hands together in anticipation; two had chummily obtained contracts to do carpentry and blacksmithing, and a third supervisor had an old boiler he planned to sell to the project. Niceties like “conflict of interest” sailed out the window in the rush to complete this grand new County facility. The job was on! Elsewhere in Alpine County, however, public sentiment quickly turned against the new jail. Eyebrows were especially raised over its exhorbitant projected price. Public grumbling culminated in an Anti-Jail Meeting in Markleeville on May 11, 1867. But despite the malcontents, the jail was rapidly completed. When done, its stone walls were 18 inches thick, laid in cement. A separate under-roof compartment contained a foot of dirt, a precaution intended to render the building “fire proof.” Inside were six stout cells: four made of wood and two of solid iron plate, presumably for the more hardened criminals. Grated iron cell doors weighed in at 500 pounds apiece and, for added security, prisoners could be tethered to the floor with short 27-inch chains. Finishing touches included such niceties as plaster, painted woodwork and trim in the jailer’s portion of the building. And for an added bit of comfort there were two woodstoves, one situated at each end of the building. When the building was finally finished around the end of December, 1867, it was a magnificent structure indeed — and clocked in with a huge cost over-run. Ups and extras boosted the total cost to over $7,000 — nearly twice the original bid. The silver mines in Alpine eventually petered out, and the demonetization of silver in 1873 dealt its own blow to Silver Mountain’s local economy. In 1875, citizens voted to move Alpine’s county seat from remote, snowy Silver Mountain to the somewhat milder climate of Markleeville. There, a fresh jail was erected: wooden instead of stone, this time. Damn the

fire hazard, the powers-that-be opted for the cheaper structural option, and cheaper it was: just $603.37 for a notched log building. In yet another nod to economy, the originally heavy iron jail cells were yanked from the old stone jail at Silver Mountain City and carted off for re-use in Markleeville. Over the succeeding decades, the old stone jail at Silver Mountain City slowly fell to ruin. (Some say many of its carefully-hewn building stones were pilfered and wound up in rock walls and other projects around Alpine County.) But look carefully, and you can still visit the stone jail’s remains along today’s California Highway 4. (Visit http://tinyurl. com/y7o44cma for a map and directions!) Best of all, you can still step inside the actual iron jail cells that once held prisoners at Silver Mountain! They’re still here, inside the 1876 log jail at Alpine County’s wonderful museum at the top of Schoolhouse Hill in Markleeville. Like to step inside this original antique jail cell for yourself? Here’s the Museum’s website: https://www.alpinecountymuseum.org (They’re open Memorial Day through the end of October and closed during winter months; be sure to check their hours!) Maybe . . .we were supposed to meet the wrong people before meeting the right one so that, when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift. Maybe . . . when the door of happiness closes, another opens; but, often times, we look so long at the closed door that we don’t even see the new one which has been opened for us. Maybe . . . it is true that we don’t know what we have until we lose it, but it is also true that we don’t know what we have been missing until it arrives. Maybe . . . the happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Maybe . . . the brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; after all, you can’t go on successfully in life until you let go of your past mistakes, failures and heartaches. Maybe . . . you should dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go, be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you dream of and want to do. Maybe . . . there are moments in life when you miss someone -- a parent, a spouse, a friend, a child -- so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real, so that once they are around you appreciate them more. Maybe . . . the best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch and swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you’ve ever had. Maybe . . . you should always try to put yourself in others’ shoes. If you feel that something could hurt you, it probably will hurt the other person, too. Maybe . . . you should do something nice for someone every single day, even if it is simply to leave them alone. Maybe . . . giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Don’t expect love in return; just wait for it to grow in their heart; but, if it doesn’t, be content that it grew in yours. Maybe . . . happiness waits for all those who cry, all those who hurt, all those who have searched, and all those who have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of all the people who have touched their lives. Maybe . . . you shouldn’t go for looks; they can deceive; don’t go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile. Maybe . . . you should hope for enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you happy. Maybe . . . you should try to live your life to the fullest because when you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling but when you die, you can be the one who is smiling and everyone around you crying. Maybe . . . you could call those people who mean something to you, to those who have touched your life, to those

who can and do make you smile when you really need it, to those who make you see the brighter side of things when you are really down, and to all those whom you want to know that you appreciate them and their friendship. The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday mornings. Perhaps it’s the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it’s the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable. A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the kitchen with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. I turned the volume up on my radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning talk show. I heard an older sounding chap with a golden voice. You know the kind, he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business himself. He was talking about “a thousand marbles” to someone named “Tom.” I was intrigued and sat down to listen to what he had to say. “Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you’re busy with your job. I’m sure they pay you well but it’s a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. Too bad you missed your daughter’s dance recital.” He continued: “Let me tell you something Tom, something that has helped me keep a good perspective on my own priorities.” And that’s when he began to explain his theory of “1000 marbles.” “You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average person lives about seventy-five years. I know, some live more and some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years.” “Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3,900 which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now stick with me Tom, I’m getting to the important part.” “It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail,” he went on, “and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays. I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy.” “So, I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit three toy stores to roundup 1,000 marbles. I took them home and put them inside of a large, clear plastic container right here in my workshop next to the radio. Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away.” “I found that watching the marbles diminish caused me to focus more on the really important things in life. There is nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out, to help get your priorities straight.” “Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign-off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure if I make it until next Saturday then God has blessed me with a little extra time to be with my loved ones.” “It was nice to talk to you Tom, I hope you spend more

time with your loved ones, and I hope to meet you again someday. Have a good morning!” You could have heard a pin drop when he hung up the phone. Even the show’s moderator didn’t have anything to say for a few moments. I guess he gave us all a lot to think about. I had planned to do some work that morning, then go to the gym. Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. “C’mon honey, I’m taking you and the kids to breakfast.” “What brought this on?” she asked with a smile. “Oh, nothing special,” I said. “It has just been a long time since we

spent a Saturday together with the kids. Hey, can we stop at a toy store while we’re out? I need to buy about a thousand marbles.” HONDA 1972 CB750/78 SPORT ENGINE, BARN FIND, clear title $1,000 OBO, Dale (775)721-9014 GOT DIRTY WINDOWS? Leila M. Wells, Part 4 BUTTER - When you put butter on your bread or toast, do you ever think what it is, where it comes from and how it is made? Butter comes from cream, cream comes from milk and milk comes from a cow. A farmer cares for the cow, feeds her and milks her but now-a-day, he does not make the butter as in the days long past. Years ago nearly every family owned a cow even though they had very little land. The cow was pastured generally in a community lot and either milked at the pasture bars or brought to the home barn. The milk was strained through “cheese cloth” into shallow pans and set on shelves, either in the pantry or cellar for the cream to rise. After about twenty-four or thirty-six hours the cream was skimmed off with a tin skimmer. This was an instrument with holes in it so the milk would run through as the cream would be too thick to go through. When enough cream had been accumulated it was put into an earthen jar called a “churn”. The cover had a hole in it so the “dash” handle could come through and be worked up and down, keeping the cream in motion until the butter formed in small particles. These particles were skimmed out into a butter bowl (a large wooden bowl) and water added to wash out whatever milk was left in. Generally two different waters were used and a ladle was used to agitate the butter particles and wash out the milk. Then the salt was added, about an ounce of salt to a pound of butter, and thoroughly worked in so that the butter wouldn’t be streaked. Then it was made into balls for the table or packed in earthen jars or wooden tubs for market. A childhood treat was when my grandmother would put a pan of sour or “labbard” milk in front of me and sprinkle it with brown sugar. “Delicious” in my estimation. Making butter was our chief source of income when we were first married. We had a small “separator” so we didn’t use pans and we had one of the new churns a barrel set in a frame and turned end to end by a hand crank. We had regular customers and packed the butter in earthen jars, holding from five to ten pounds and if we received over twenty-five cents a pound we thought it wonderful. Butter now comes from large factories, wrapped in waxed paper in one pound packages and tastes like money. In olden times if the butter was slow in breaking, a fire poker was heated red hot and thrust into the churn to “burn the intch.” This raised the temperature of the cream which was just what was needed. Cold cream was slow to turn into butter. In olden times when the butter in winter didn’t have the bright color of June, the butter-maker used the juice of grated carrots for coloring. Later a coloring was obtainable at the village store. FENCES - “Don’t fence me in” are the words in an old song, so fences have existed for ages and there are many kinds for many uses. Continued...

Pee in the Pool....

Little Johnny was approached by the lifeguard at the public swimming pool. “You’re not allowed to pee in the pool,” said the lifeguard. “I’m going to have to report you.” “But everyone pees in the pool,” insisted Little Johnny. “That may be,” said the lifeguard, “but not from the diving board!” The early settlers used what was available such as stumps, rails and stones. The stump fences that remain today are really quite unique and pretty. That was one way that the early pioneers could make use of what was on hand and what today is destroyed was then used. They served two purposes, cleared the land and fenced it at the same time. As so many of the farms were stony, the stone fences or walls as they were called, also served these two purposes. Many of them have disappeared now as they have been used for house and barn foundations and as sub-bases for many of the new roads. Rail fences came next and they were of two kinds, those laid zig-zag and those laid straight with their ends through holes in a larger rail driven into the ground. These fences took up less room than the zig-zag ones and it was easier to keep the fence row clean of briars and brush. Then came the barbed wire fences and later still the woven wire ones. Ornamental fences were used in villages and around lawns and gardens. Some of the fancy iron work fences are still found and the white picket fences are being built now-a-days more as a decoration than for a practical use. Most farmers are doing away with the old types of fences and are using the one strand of wire which carries electricity and one contact with the fence is sufficient to teach the animals to avoid it.

Why can’t I find a diet that works and is long lasting?

Does this sound familiar? Many struggle with constant yo-yoing with their weight and temporary results. To become an intuitive eater, it begins with the mindset and stems from your inner soul. In order to make peace and honor your food, respect your health and body, and be satisfied with your food; your psychological wellbeing must be explored and evaluated. People coping with their emotions with food is a common behavior pattern rather than finding other ways to comfort, nurture, and distract to resolve emotional issues. Practicing self-compassion is a far more effective motivator than to engage in self-punishment. Self-compassion does not avoid

accountability, it actually strengthens it. Self-esteem is a positive evaluation of one’s self and self-compassion isn’t judgment or evaluation at all rather it is a way we relate to our continually changing life of who we are. Self-esteem results in feeling better than others, whereas, self-compassion acknowledges that we aren’t perfect. Self-compassion provides encouragement and support for you to do the best you can and keep trying. You begin to open your heart to compassion and display your capacity for love, wisdom, courage, and generosity. Being kind to ourselves isn’t a selfish luxury, but a fundamental necessity. Six-year-old Annie returns home from school and says that today she had her first family planning lesson at school. Her mother, very interested, asks: “Oh... Pete in my class says you can buy babies at the hospital.” Her mother answers laughingly, “But that’s no reason to be ashamed.” “No... but I can’t tell them that we were so poor that you and daddy had to make me yourselves!” JOURNEYMAN PAINTER (INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR), handyman, landscape design and installation, pool and pond maintenance, 30 years of experience, Highly competitive quotes, Senior discounts, Call Robert at (775)508-8404 PERFECTO GARDENING SERVICES, SERVING Carson Valley over 20 Years! How the Internet and WWW All Began…Sort of…

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, “why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?” And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, “how, dear?” And Dot replied, “I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah’s Pony Stable (UPS).” Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent. To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures – Hebrew To The People (HTTP). And the young men did take to Dot Com’s trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. And indeed, did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates’ drumheads and drumsticks. And Dot did say, “oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others.” Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known and said, “we need a name that reflects what we are.” To which Dot replied, “Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators.” “YAHOO,” said Abraham. And because it was Dot’s idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham’s cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot’s drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God’s Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE). That is how it all began. Or something like this. When the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in the bathrooms, flunk a test, or chew gum. And the banquets were in the cafeteria and we danced to a juke box later, and all the girls wore fluffy pastel gowns and the boys wore suits for the first time and we were allowed to stay out till 12 pm. When a ‘57 Chevy was everyone’s dream car. . . to cruise, peel out, lay rubber and watch drag races, and people went steady and girls wore a class ring with an inch of wrapped dental floss or yarn coated with pastel frost nail polish so it would fit her finger. And no one ever asked where the car keys were ‘cause they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked. And you got in big trouble if you accidentally locked the doors at home, since no one ever had a key. Remember lying on your back on the grass with your friends and saying things like “That cloud looks like a...” And playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game. Back then, baseball was not a psychological group learning experience-it was a game. Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals ‘cause no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger. And...with all our progress...don’t you just wish...just once...you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace... and share it with the children of the 80’s and 90’s... Remember Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Laurel & Hardy, Howdy Doody and The Peanut Gallery, The Lone Ranger, The Shadow Knows, Nellie Belle, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk as well as the sound of a real mower on Saturday morning, and summers filled with bike rides, playing in cowboy land, baseball games, bowling and visits to the pool...and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar. When being sent to the principal’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn’t because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we all survived because their love was greater than the threat. Didn’t that feel good, just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that! And was it really that long ago? Feline Heaven

A cat dies and goes to Heaven. God meets him at the gate and says, “You have been a good cat all of these years. Anything you desire is yours, all you have to do is ask.” The cats says, “Well, I lived all my life with a poor family on a farm and had to sleep on hardwood floors.” God says, “Say no more.” And instantly, a fluffy pillow appears. A few days later, 6 mice are killed in a tragic accident and they go to Heaven. God meets them at the gate with the same offer that He made the cat. The mice said, “All our lives we’ve had to run. Cats, dogs and even women with brooms have chased us. If we could only have a pair of roller skates, we wouldn’t have to run anymore.” God says, “Say no more.” And instantly, each mouse is fitted with a beautiful pair of tiny roller skates. About a week later, God decides to check and see how the cat is doing. The cat is sound asleep on his new pillow. God gently wakes him and asks, “How are you doing? Are you happy here?” The cat yawns and stretches and says, “Oh, I’ve never been happier in my life. And those Meals on Wheels you’ve been sending over are the best!”

Dirty Magazines

Soon after being transferred to a new duty station, my Marine husband called home to tell me he would be late – again. He went on to say that dirty magazines had been discovered in the platoon’s quarters and they had to discipline the whole squad. I launched into a tirade, arguing that many men had pictures hanging in their quarters at our previous post, so his new platoon should not be penalized for something trivial. “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound...” So begins one of the most beloved hymns of all times, a staple in the hymnals of many denominations, New Britain or “45 on the top” in Sacred Harp. The author of the words was John Newton, the self-proclaimed wretch who once was lost but then was found, saved by amazing grace. Newton was born in London July 24, 1725, the son of a commander of a merchant ship which sailed the Mediterranean. When John was eleven, he went to sea with his father and made six voyages with him before the elder Newton retired. In 1744 John was impressed into service on a manof-war, the H. M. S. Harwich. Finding conditions on board intolerable, he deserted but was soon recaptured and publicly flogged and demoted from midshipman to common seaman. Finally, at his own request he was exchanged into service on a slave ship, which took him to the coast of Sierra Leone. He then became the servant of a slave trader and was brutally abused. Early in 1748 he was rescued by a sea captain who had known John’s father. John Newton ultimately became captain of his own ship, one which plied the slave trade. Although he had had some early religious instruction from his mother, who had died when he was a child, he had long since given up any religious convictions. However, on a homeward voyage, while he was attempting to steer the ship through a violent storm, he experienced what he was to refer to later as his “great deliverance.” He recorded in his journal that when all seemed lost and the ship would surely sink, he exclaimed, “Lord, have mercy upon us.” Later in his cabin he reflected on what he had said and began to believe that God had addressed him through the storm and that grace had begun to work for him. For the rest of his life he observed the anniversary of May 10, 1748 as the day of his conversion, a day of humiliation in which he subjected his will to a higher power. “Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’tis grace has bro’t me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.” He continued in the slave trade for a time after his conversion; however, he saw to it that the slaves under his care were treated humanely. In 1750 he married Mary Catlett, with whom he had been in love for many years. By 1755, after a serious illness, he had given up seafaring forever. During his days as a sailor he had begun to educate himself, teaching himself Latin, among other subjects. From 1755 to 1760 Newton was surveyor of tides at Liverpool, where he came to know George Whitefield, deacon in the Church of England, evangelistic preacher, and leader of the Calvinistic Methodist Church. Newton became Whitefield’s enthusiastic disciple. During this period Newton also met and came to admire John Wesley, founder of Methodism. Newton’s self-education continued, and he learned Greek and Hebrew. He decided to become a minister and applied to the Archbishop of York for ordination. The Archbishop refused his request, but Newton persisted in his goal, and he was subsequently ordained by the Bishop of Lincoln and accepted the

curacy of Olney, Buckinghamshire. Newton’s church became so crowded during services that it had to be enlarged. He preached not only in Olney but in other parts of the country. In 1767 the poet William Cowper settled at Olney, and he and Newton became friends. Cowper helped Newton with his religious services and on his tours to other places. They held not only a regular weekly church service but also began a series of weekly prayer meetings, for which their goal was to write a new hymn for each one. They collaborated on several editions of Olney Hymns, which achieved lasting popularity. The first edition, published in 1779, contained 68 pieces by Cowper and 280 by Newton. Among Newton’s contributions which are still loved and sung today are “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds” and “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,” as well as “Amazing Grace.” Composed probably between 1760 and 1770 in Olney, “Amazing Grace” was possibly one of the hymns written for a weekly service. Through the years other writers have composed additional verses to the hymn which came to be known as “Amazing Grace” (it was not thus entitled in Olney Hymns), and possibly verses from other Newton hymns have been added. However, these are the six stanzas that appeared, with minor spelling variations, in both the first edition in 1779 and the 1808 edition, the one nearest the date of Newton’s death. It appeared under the heading Faith’s Review and Expectation, along with a reference to First Chronicles, chapter 17, verses 16 and 17. Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound) That sav’d a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears reliev’d; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believ’d! Thro’ many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. The Lord has promis’d good to me, His word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. Is There a Constitutional Right to Physician-Assisted Suicide?

When a loved one is struck with a painful, terminal, debilitating illness, their family may believe that the kindest and best medical treatment would be to end the patient’s life. However, the United States Constitution does not provide any right to physician-assisted suicide and the topic remains quite controversial. The laws regarding whether doctors can administer treatment to assist with ending life, often referred to as “right to die” or “death with dignity” laws, vary from state to state. So, while there is no constitutional right to physicianassisted suicide, a growing list of states has enacted laws granting the right to die. This should not be confused with euthanasia, or mercy killing, in which another individual actively takes the patient’s life. As its name implies, physicianassisted suicide legally requires the patient to take the drugs that ultimately end their life. The Right to Refuse Medical Treatment: The U.S. Constitution guarantees many of the basic rights of citizens and legal residents, including free speech, religion, and due process. Due process is a lesser known, but extremely important, right. Under the due process clause, a U.S. citizen cannot lose their life, liberty, or property without notice and the opportunity to be heard. In a famous decision, Cruzan v. Director, Missouri Department of Health, the Supreme Court established that the due process clause protects a patient’s

liberty to refuse medical treatment, even if that refusal would ultimately lead to the patient’s death. One of the best ways to clarify your wishes regarding endof-life medical care is to spell it out in a living will or advance directive. These legally binding documents inform medical staff about whether you want to be kept alive (or resuscitated) in the event of a terminal illness, persistent vegetative state, or other conditions. An extra step you may take is to appoint a trusted individual to make these decisions on your behalf through a durable power of attorney for health care. The Right to Die: A Brief Legal History: Physician-assisted suicide laws and court battles have been high-profile affairs steeped in politics, religion, and philosophical arguments. While the nation’s highest court declined to rule that the right to die is protected under the Constitution, it stopped short of declaring the practice illegal (thus making it a state issue). In 1997, the Supreme Court issued two decisions on the same day on the right to die: Washington v. Glucksberg, and Vacco v. Quill. Those two cases decided that the government’s interest in preserving life and preventing intentional killing outweighed the patient’s interest in the liberty to choose to die, regardless of the patient’s condition. Furthermore, the Court ruled that refusing life-saving medical treatment is different than asking a physician to end a patient’s life. The rulings gave the green light for states to make laws treating these two acts differently.

Visit us at www.SierraScoop.com State Death-With-Dignity Laws: Overview: States may also enact laws that protect a patient’s right to die, and a growing list of states have done so. In those states, doctors may provide lethal doses of certain drugs at the request of their patients, although patients control the act of administering those doses. Most state right-to-die laws require the patient to inquire with their doctor several times before being prescribed lethal drugs and require patients to have six or fewer months left to live, among other regulations. Below are a few examples of states with physician-assisted suicide laws on the books: Oregon - Voters passed the Oregon Death with Dignity Act in 1994, which requires two oral and one written doctors request. Montana - the Montana Supreme Court expanded the state’s existing Rights of the Terminally Ill Act to include physician-assisted suicide in 2009, but Montana still lacks a regulatory framework for such acts. Vermont - Lawmakers in Vermont passed the Patient Choice and Control at End of Life Act in 2013, which is similar to right-to-die laws in other states. Horrible Sunburn

A guy falls asleep on the beach for several hours and gets a horrible sunburn all over his body. He goes to the hospital and is promptly admitted after being diagnosed with second degree burns on his legs. He was starting to blister and in pain by the time the doctor arrived. To help, the doctor prescribed an IV with saline and electrolytes, a sedative, and a Viagra pill every four hours. The attending nurse was rather surprised by the prescription and asked, “What good will Viagra do him?” The doctor replied, “It will keep the sheets off his legs.”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Student Exams...

Two college seniors had a week of exams coming up. They decided to party instead. Their biggest exam was on Wednesday and they showed up telling the professor that their car had broken down the night before due to a very flat tire and they needed a bit more time to study. The professor told them that they could have another day to study. That evening, both of the boys crammed all night until they were sure that they knew just about everything. Arriving to class the next morning, each boy was told to go to separate classrooms to take the exam. Each shrugged and went to two different parts of the building. As each sat down, they read the first question. “For 5 points, explain the contents of an atom.” At this point, they both thought that this was going to be a piece of cake and answered the question with ease. Then, the test continued. “For 95 points, tell me which tire it was.” ALLERGIES AND DUST A PROBLEM? Probing Questions...

Why is it that if someone tells you that there are 1 billion stars in the universe, you will believe it, but if someone tells you a wall has wet paint, you will have to touch it to be sure? If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it FedUPs? Are Lipton Tea employees allowed to take coffee breaks? What hair color do they put on the driver’s licenses of bald men? Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do, write to them? Why don’t they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen could look for them while they deliver the mail? How much deeper would oceans be if sponges didn’t live there? If it’s true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for? You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive. Taxi!

Three drunks hailed a taxi. The taxi driver seeing that they were so wasted when they got in, he just switched on the engine and switched it off, and said we are here. The 1st guy gave him money, 2nd guy said thanks, but the 3rd guy slapped him. The taxi driver was stunned because he was hoping that none of them would have realized the car didn’t move an inch. “So what was that for,” he asked. “Control your speed next time, you almost killed us.”

Gotta Give Something Up...

An eighty-eight-year-old man was having an annual physical. As the doctor was listening to his heart with the stethoscope, he began muttering, “Oh oh!” The man asked the doctor, “What’s the problem?” “Well,” said the doc, “you have a serious heart murmur. Do you smoke?” “No,” replied the man. “Do you drink in excess?” “No.” replied the man. “Do you have a love life?” “Yes, I do!” “Well,” said the doc, “I’m afraid with this heart murmur, you’ll have to give up half your love life.” Looking perplexed, the old man said, “Which half - the looking or the thinking?”
