“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”

The year America began to change

When prayer was removed from schools In 1962, the United States Supreme Court made a landmark decision in Engel v. Vitale, effectively removing official prayer from public schools. To many, it seemed like a small shift—just a legal technicality to preserve the socalled “separation of church and state.” But what if this decision marked the beginning of a deep cultural unraveling? What changed? We removed the moral compass. We silenced the morning prayers that once invited God’s presence into the school day. We told a generation of children they could define truth on their own terms. The results are evident in every corner of society. When God was shown the door, the enemy walked in. And what followed? A dramatic rise in violent crime. Broken homes and fatherless children. A culture steeped in lust, confusion, and moral ambiguity. Educational decline and so much more. A spiritual void, filled with everything but God. This isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about cause and effect. When prayer was removed, it wasn’t just a legal ruling—it was a symbolic severing of America’s spiritual foundation in public life. Morality, discipline, accountability, and academic performance took a hit. We stripped away the reverence for something higher than ourselves, and the void was filled with confusion, rebellion, and brokenness.

4

No one’s saying prayer alone kept society perfect. But prayer, faith, and the acknowledgment of a higher authority created an anchor—something solid in a shifting world. Without it, we drifted. Now we live in a time of skyrocketing depression, rampant identity confusion, mass shootings, and a crisis of purpose among young people. Are we surprised? We can’t legislate hearts or force belief, but we must ask: did we remove more than just a prayer when we told God He was no longer welcome in our schools? It’s time to reconsider. Not just legally—but spiritually, culturally, and communally. America must remember where her strength once came from. Not from man-made institutions or fleeting ideologies. But from God. The battle isn’t over. It’s only just begun. Let us pray again. Let us teach again. Let us build again. Starting with our children. Enough to kill us

A dietitian was once addressing a large audience.“The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks erode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. Vegetables can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. “ But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?” A 75-year-old man in the front row stood up and said, “Wedding cake.” Did you know? Last requests

Mary Clancy goes up to Father McGuire after his Sunday morning service, and she’s in tears. He says, “So what’s bothering you, Mary my dear?”She says, “Oh, Father, I’ve got terrible news. My husband passed away last night.” The priest says, “Oh, Mary, that’s terrible. Tell me, Mary, did he have any last requests?” She says, “That he did, Father.” The priest says, “What did he ask, Mary? “ She says, “He said, ‘Please Mary, put down that damn gun.’ “

Smoking Nuns

Two nuns were in the back of the convent smoking a cigarette, when one said, “It’s bad enough that we have to sneak out here to smoke, but it really is a problem getting rid of the butts so that Mother Superior doesn’t find them.” The second nun said, “I’ve found a marvelous invention called a condom which works really well for this problem. You just open the packet up, take out the condom, and put the cigarette butt in, roll it up, and dispose of it all later.” The first nun was quite impressed and asked where she could find them. “You get them at a drug store, sister. Just go and ask the pharmacist for them.” The next day the good sister went to the drugs store and walked up to the counter. “Good morning, sister,” the pharmacist said, “what can I do for you today?” “I’d like some condoms please,” said the nun. The druggist was a little taken aback, but recovered soon enough and asked, “How many boxes would you like? There are 12 to a box.” “I’ll take six boxes. That should last about a week,” said the nun. The pharmacist was truly flabbergasted by this time and was almost afraid to ask any more questions. But his professionalism prevailed and he then asked in a clear voice. “Sister, what size condoms would you like? We have large, extra large, and the big liar size.” The sister thought for a minute and finally said: “I’m

Annual medical exam

An elderly married couple scheduled their annual medical examination the same day so they could travel together. After the husband’s examination, the doctor then said to him, “You appear to be in good health. Do you have any medical concerns that you would like discuss with me?” “In fact, I do,” said the man. “After I have sex with my wife for the first time, I am usually hot and sweaty. And then, after I have sex with my wife the second time, I am usually cold and chilly.” “This is very interesting,” replied the doctor. “Let me do some research and get back to you.” After examining the elderly wife, the doctor said to her, “Everything appears to be fine. Do you have any medical concerns that you would like to discuss with me?” The lady replied that she had no questions nor concerns. The doctor then asked, “Your husband had an unusual concern. He claims that he is usually hot and sweaty after having sex the first time with you and then cold and chilly after the second time. Do you know why?” “Oh that old buzzard!” she replied. “That’s because the first time is usually in July and the second time is usually in December!” FISHING TACKLE, RODS, REELS AND SOFT baits for bass (775)901-1775

Bring riches with you

There once was a rich man who was near death. He was very grieved because he had worked so hard for his money and he wanted to be able to take it with him to heaven. So he began to pray that he might be able to take some of his wealth with him. An angel hears his plea and appears to him. “Sorry, but you can’t take your wealth with you.” The man implores the angel to speak to God to see if He might bend the rules. The man continues to pray that his wealth could follow him. The angel reappears and informs the man that God has decided to allow him to take one suitcase with him. Overjoyed, the man gathers his largest suitcase and fills it with pure gold bars and places it beside his bed. Soon afterward the man dies and shows up at the Gates of Heaven to greet St. Peter. St. Peter seeing the suitcase says, “Hold on, you can’t bring that in here!” But, the man explains to St. Peter that he has permission and asks him to verify his story with the Lord. Sure enough, St. Peter checks and comes back saying, “You’re right. You are allowed one carry-on bag, but I’m supposed to check its contents before letting it through.” St. Peter opens the suitcase to inspect the worldly items that the man found too precious to leave behind and exclaims, “You brought pavement?!!!” SLOOWW COMPUTER? Growing Wild

Here is this guy who really takes care of his body; he lifts weights and jogs five miles every day. One morning, he looks into the mirror and admires his body. He notices that he is really sun tanned all over except one part and he decides to do something about it. He goes to the beach, completely undresses and buries himself in the sand except for the one part sticking out. Two little old ladies are strolling along the beach and one looks down and says, “There really is no justice in this world.” The other little old lady says, “What do you mean?” The first little old lady says, “Look at that.” “When I was 10 years old, I was afraid of it.” “When I was 20 years old, I was curious about it.” “When I was 30 years old, I enjoyed it.” “When I was 40 years old, I asked for it.” “When I was 50 years old, I paid for it.” “When I was 60 years old, I prayed for it.” “When I was 70 years old, I forgot about it.” “And now that I’m 80, the damned things are growing wild!!”

Life choices...

An older man was married to a younger woman. After several years of a very happy marriage, he had a heart attack. The doctor advised him that in order to prolong his life, they should cut out whoopie. He and his wife discussed the matter and decided that he should sleep in the family room downstairs to save them both from temptation. One night, after several weeks of this, he decided that life without whoopie wasn’t worth living. So he headed upstairs. God’s other name

A Sunday school teacher asked her second graders if anyone knew another name for God. She was picturing answers like ‘Lord’ or ‘Almighty’. After a long moment of silence a little boy raised his hand and said, “Howard.” “Howard?” replied the confused teacher. “You know,” continued the boy, “Howard be thy name.”

3 drunks

Three drunks hailed a taxi. The taxi driver seeing that they were so wasted when they got in, he just switched on the engine and switched it off, and said we are here. The 1st guy gave him money, 2nd guy said thanks, but the 3rd guy slapped him. The taxi driver was stunned because he was hoping that none of them would have realized the car didn’t move an inch. So what was that for, he asked. Control your speed next time, you almost killed us.

Part 2 - by Karen Dustman Lifting rheumy eyes to me, he smiled. A long, slow, careful smile. “I been practicing my bird-watching,” he said, pointing behind me toward the big picture window. “That one there? That’s a red-tailed hawk.” I turned around, then turned back. “I don’t see any birds, Hank.” “Right,” he said with a rather odd chuckle. I’d almost forgotten about that whole strange conversation until an ambulance pulled up in front of Hank and Maribel’s house the next week. Strangely enough, it hadn’t arrived with a siren. When they wheeled out a body on a stretcher, covered in a sheet, my heart nearly stopped. Hank hadn’t been kidding about Maribel trying to kill him. She’d really gone and done it. I was just trying to figure out how I was going to explain to the police about the stuff that left no trace, when someone came happily tripping out from the house next door – past the fake marble columns, past the leaf-cluttered reflecting pool, straight up my front walk. Hank. With a big smile on his face. I threw my front door open. “What happened?” I gasped. “Was that – her on the stretcher?” I pointed toward the body being loaded into the back of the ambulance as we spoke. continued....

“Yup!” he grinned. “That’s Maribel. Gotta beer?” “But I thought – I thought –” “I wasn’t kidding about her trying to kill me,” Hank said, popping open his first cold one and settling down on my sofa with a grin. “I’ve been watching as she makes the coffees every morning. Made sure it was sugar she put in mine before I’d take a sip. Then this morning . . . sure as shooting, she pulled something from her pocket when she thought I wasn’t looking. Slipped a pile of it into one of the two mugs on the counter.” I couldn’t take it any longer. “So, what happened?” Hank was grinning ear to ear. “I pointed to the window. Told her to look at that red-tailed hawk in the tree out front.” I shook my head in confusion. “But Hank, there’s no hawk out there.” “I know that. But it only took two seconds when she wasn’t looking to switch the mugs.” Like to read more free micro-mysteries? Find me as “AbbyRiceAuthor” on Substack.

Miracle worker...

Two guys and a union worker were fishing on a lake one day, when Jesus walked across the water and joined them in the boat. When the three astonished men had settled down enough to speak, the first guy asked, humbly, “Jesus, I’ve suffered from back pain ever since I took shrapnel in the Vietnam War...could you help me?” “Of course, my son,” Jesus said, and when he touched the man’s back, he felt relief for the first time in years. The second man, who wore very thick glasses and had a hard time reading and driving, asked if Jesus could do anything about his eyesight. Jesus smiled, removed the man’s glasses and tossed them in the lake. When they hit the water, the man’s eyes cleared, and he could see everything distinctly. When Jesus turned to heal the union worker, the guy put his hands up and cried, defensively, “DON’T TOUCH ME! I’m on long-term disability!” KENNY AND COLLEEN’S STUMP GRINDING services, K&C stump grinding services, Call (917)3623181 or (410)739-4052

VIAGRA Press Release

In pharmacology, all drugs have two names - a trade name and a generic name. For example, the trade name of Tylenol is acetaminophen. Aleve is known as naproxen; Amoxil is amoxicillin, and Advil is ibuprofen. The FDA has been looking for a generic name for VIAGRA. After consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced it has settled on the generic name of mycoxafloppin. Also considered were mycoxafailin, mydixadrupin, mydixarizin, mydixadud, dixafix, and of course ibepokin. Pfizer Corp is making an announcement that Viagra will soon be available in liquid form and will be marketed by Pepsi Co as a power beverage suitable for use as a mixer. Pepsi’s proposed ad campaign claims it will now be possible for a man to literally pour himself a stiff one. Obviously we can no longer call this a soft drink. This additive gives new meaning to the names of cocktails, highballs and just a good old fashioned stiff drink. Pepsi will market the new concoction by the name of Mount & Do. The long term implications of drugs and medical procedures must be fully considered: Over the past few years, more money has been spent on breast implants and Viagra than was spent on memory loss research. It is believed that by the year 2030, there will be a large number of people wandering around with huge breasts and erections who can’t remember what to do with them! 28 PIECES OF LLADRO (HAND PAINTED FIGURINES), 4 Lennox Christmas “Spirit” figurines, perfect condition, 14 Lennox Christmas figurines, mostly Angels in original boxes, large vintage refurbished doll in glass case, 14 pairs of Capezio’s size 8, for pricing call (510)390-3771 GREAT PAY FOR EXPERIENCED RELIABLE Caregivers. Homecoming

It was the annual homecoming dance at the local high school gym. Most of the young folk were out on the dance floor but a few young men and women lined the sides of the gym, hoping for a dance partner to ask them out onto the dance floor. After waiting anxiously for quite a while, a rather awkward freshman finally got up the nerve to ask a pretty junior for a dance at the homecoming. She gave him the once-over and said, “Sorry, I won’t dance with a child.” “Please forgive me,” responded the underclassman. “I didn’t realize you were pregnant.”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Today is my birthday!

A woman is in the bar of a cruise ship and she asks the bartender for a scotch and two drops of water. As the bartender gives her the drink, she says, “It’s my birthday today, and I’m on the cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday.” The bartender says, “Well, since it’s your birthday I’ll buy you a drink; in fact, I’ll take care of this one for you.” As the women finishes her drink the woman to her right says, “I guess I should buy you a drink.” The old woman says, “All right. Bartender, I want a scotch and two drops of water.” “All right,” says the bartender. As she finishes her drink, the man to her right says, “Since I’m the only one around you that hasn’t bought you a drink, I guess I might as well buy you one.” The old woman says, “All right. Bartender I want a scotch and two drops of water.” “Coming right up,” the bartender says. As he gives her the drink he says, “Ma’am, I’m dying of curiosity. Why the scotch and only two drops of water?” The old woman replies, “Sonny, you learn that when you’re my age, you can hold your liquor but you sure can’t hold your water.”

Chuckie Chicken

An old farmer went to town to see a movie. The ticket girl said, “Sir, what is that on your shoulder?” The old farmer said, “That is my pet rooster, Chuckie. Wherever I go, Chuckie goes.” “I’m sorry, Sir,” said the ticket girl, “We can’t allow animals in the theater. Not even a pet chicken.” The old farmer went around the corner and stuffed the chicken down his pants. He returned to the booth, bought a ticket and entered the theater. He sat down next to two old emergency room nurses named Mildred and Marge. The movie started and the chicken began to squirm. The old farmer un-zipped his pants so Chuckie could stick his

head out and watch the movie. “Marge,” whispered Mildred. “What?” said Marge. “I think the guy next to me is a pervert.” “What makes you think so?” asked Marge. “He unzipped his pants and he has his thing out,” whispered Mildred. “Well, don’t worry about it,” said Marge, “At our age it isn’t anything we haven’t seen before.” “Yes,” said Mildred, “But this one’s eating my popcorn!” HARMAR/AL100/UNIVERSAL OUTSIDE SCOOTER Hitch-Mount Lift/350 lbs capacity/Compatible with most minivans/SUV/trucks/vans.
