Apple pie....

Little Johnny and his family lived in the country, and as a result seldom had guests. He was eager to help his mother after his father appeared with two dinner guests from the office. When the dinner was nearly over, Little Johnny went to the kitchen and proudly carried in the first piece of apple pie, giving it to his father who passed it to a guest. Little Johnny came in with a second piece of pie and gave it to his father, who again gave it to a guest. This was too much for Little Johnny, who said, “It’s no use, Dad. The pieces are all the same size.” “No one can stop you from shinning if you are standing in your own light.”

Sea of information

Older Person Friendly

Charley, a new retiree-greeter at a local box store, just couldn’t seem to get to work on time. Every day he was 5, 10, sometimes 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, cleanshaven, sharp-minded and a real credit to the company and obviously demonstrating their “Older Person Friendly” policies. One day the boss called him into the office for a talk. “Charley, I have to tell you, I like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job when you finally get here; but your being late so often is quite bothersome.” “Yes, I know boss, and I am working on it.” “Well good, you are a team player. That’s what I like to hear.” “Yes sir, I understand your concern and I’ll try harder.” Seeming puzzled, the manager went on to comment, “It’s odd though you’re coming in late. I know you’re retired from the Armed Forces. What did they say to you there if you showed up in the morning so late and so often?” The old man looked down at the floor, then smiled. He chuckled quietly, then said with a grin, “They usually saluted and said, ‘Good morning, Admiral, can I get your coffee, sir?’ DON’T READ THIS UNLESS YOU NEED; five tie down chains and binders $350; 12’X24’ mesh tarp $70 large quantity of irrigation fittings $390 (775)265-6798 AMMUNITION, VARIOUS CALIBERS, NEW, commercial prices. When I was a boy I was the remote. Not only did I get up to change the television channel, I also walked outside to turn the antenna to pick up the other network. My i-tunes were a stack of vinyl records under our plastic record player. My Google was a pile of books in the corner of the living room. My e-mail was a sheet of paper, a pen, and an envelope. My video games were played in my mind while I romped outside in the sunshine. Today, however, we live in a sea of information. There are dozens of social media sites. There are hundreds of cable television channels. There are e-mails and text messages that make our computers and smart phones beep constantly. There are video games that eat up our time. There are news shows that only feed our anger and prejudices. There is so much information that we rarely have time to think about it, let alone reflect on our lives here. What can we do in such a sea? How can we navigate it? How can we sail it to find the truth about our world and ourselves? I think the key comes in asking ourselves a few important questions. When the waves of information come at you then ask yourself these things. Is this information uplifting my heart? Is it inspiring my soul? Is it educating my mind. Is it making me feel happier about my life here? Is it making me kinder and more loving? Is it urging me to help make the world a better place? Is it bringing me closer to God? If the answer is no then turn it off, disregard it, and dismiss it from your life. Our lives here are too brief to be awash in a sea of negativity. God loves us and put us here to love each other and to make this Earth more like Heaven. If the information around you isn’t helping you do this then it is wasting your time and your life. Your life is what you allow into your heart and soul and also what you share from your heart and soul. May it always be love. Serving Two Masters

A Mormon acquaintance once pushed Mark Twain into an argument on the issue of polygamy. After long and tedious expositions justifying the practice, the Mormon demanded that Twain cite any passage of scripture expressly forbidding polygamy. “Nothing easier,” Twain replied. “No man can serve two masters.”

Happiness is Self Factored

We all live our lives, placing our happiness on diverse objects, sometimes on people, and sometimes on priorities, but the question is, what do we do, when they are all gone? We fail to realize that our happiness is an inward thing, and that it should be created from the inside of us, a lot of us have gone heartbroken on several occasions because our sources of happiness are gone from us, happiness would never seize from you, when you place it on the ‘self’ factor, and when all you see in the picture is nobody and nothing else but your own self. Someone once asked me, God’s will, don’t you ever get angry? I smiled and replied; where will the anger come from... The reason being; I’ve permanently succeeded in blocking all the possible chances for anyone or anything to make me feel bad. When you create and inward happiness source, you’re creating an inward security against pain, sorrow, or tears of all sort. Most times, the misplacement of your happiness source can lead to real life issues that might even end up killing you, I’ve met a lot people who got depressed, who incubated low selfesteem, engaged in dubious drugs abuse because they misplaced their sources of happiness. To create happiness from your inside, you must learn to always love yourself, give credit to yourself when necessary, before anyone gets to criticize you, be your number one critic, smile off negativity and always remind yourself that you are your number one happiness. Every day we see news stories reporting violence in our country. We see video recordings from people who were there, we see reporters on the scene, but who we rarely don’t see are the first responders who have put their lives on the line to protect our cities/towns. Dispatchers, officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians are who deal with the events as they happen to ensure safety and provide medical attention. Here is a quick ‘thank you’ for all of their hard work and bravery. Thank you to the dispatchers. Thank you for sitting by the phone waiting to answer the 911 calls from terrified victims and informants, only to then keep the caller calm as you relay information to the officers, firemen, and medics who will be responding to the scene. You serve as the eyes and ears of a situation before anyone can arrive, and your position is overlooked and underrated way more often than it should be. Without you, how would anyone know where to go and what to prepare for? Thank you to the officers. Thank you for putting your lives on the line in order to save those around you. Each day that you wake up and put on your badge, you know there is a chance you might not get home to take it off that night. You enforce rules, ensure safety, and get labeled with the “bad-guy” reputation just because you want to make the world a safer place. You run toward the things that most other people run away from, and you deserve to know that your hard work and bravery doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you to the firemen. Thank you for putting out fires and saving homes but we know you do so much more. When you go to work each day, you could be signing up to save a cat from a tree, deliver a baby on the side of the road, or save a child from an overturned vehicle. Other days you could be rescuing a family from a burning house, or have to tell the family outside that there was no way to get their mother out of the flames. Either way, you put yourself in harm’s way every day so that you can keep others safe, and you are so appreciated. Thank you to the medical technicians. You are the difference between life and death. You are the calm voice amongst the chaos that says “everything is going to be okay.” You see the most terrifying accidents that most could never dream of, but they leave you with nightmares for weeks. You have made a difference in so many lives, and your bravery, skill, and passion is seen in the lives you’ve saved. Thank you to each and every person who goes to work with the goal to save a life. You are all amazing human beings. (author unknown) GARDENER WANTED! WEEKLY AND SPECIAL maintenance. Near Kingsbury and Foothill. Lawns, many trees and small gardens, large pond. Blue green algae and your dog

Blue green algae — also known as cyanobacteria — are tiny organisms typically found in freshwater lakes, ponds, reservoirs and slow-moving rivers. The bacteria forms on the surface of the water and blooms, to create a green, blue green or brown coloured scum or foam. Some blue green algae is highly toxic to dogs. Some types of blue green algae release toxins (such as microcystins and anatoxins) into the water. These toxins are not only highly poisonous to dogs when swallowed but are also dangerous for cats, horses, birds, cows and humans. Unfortunately, without laboratory analysis, it’s impossible to tell which blue green algae blooms are toxic and which aren’t. If a dog swallows algae containing a combination of the most severe toxins (neurotoxins and hepatotoxins), they may start showing signs within minutes. Signs in dogs exposed only to hepatotoxins can take between one and a few hours to show. Blue green algae most commonly occurs during the summer when rainfall is low, the sun is shining, and temperatures are higher — as this is when the blooms are more intense. The most common signs of blue green algae poisoning include: Vomiting, Diarrhea, Disorientation/weakness, Breathing difficulties, Drooling, Seizures, Blood in stools, Coma, Shock If left untreated, exposure to blue green algae can lead to liver damage and death within a matter of days. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Grandma Hilda, Part 2 Henry or “Henrik”

Epidemics/Pandemics

Infectious diseases have plagued humankind throughout history. When small bands of hunter-gatherers contracted an illness, it might have remained relatively contained; but as agrarian societies allowed for more heavily concentrated populations, these diseases could cause widespread damage. Trade routes between urban centers now became superhighways for the transmission of pathogens. An epidemic is defined as the widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time. A pandemic is an epidemic that crosses international boundaries and affects a large number of people in multiple countries or worldwide. Pandemics such as the Black Death, which wiped out 60% of the population of Europe, are capable of dramatically altering the course of history. They have devastated economies, toppled civilizations, ended empires. Over a million people died in each of the worst epidemics and pandemics in history. Smallpox, bubonic plague, and influenza were responsible for many of the pandemics. Luckily, due to worldwide vaccination efforts, smallpox was eradicated in 1980 -- the only infection known to have been eliminated worldwide. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is still infecting people, vaccination efforts should help bring the pandemic to an end. Unfortunately, there will almost certainly be more calamitous epidemics and pandemics in the future. We can only hope that medical science will be able to keep up. A brown eyed boy was born to Jonas and Hohanna Johnson on Aug. 22, 1898 in Klippen, Sweden. He was the eleventh child of thirteen. Several brothers and sisters had died in infancy, but seven lived to adult age. His father was a shoemaker. At that time most shoes were made by hand. His mother was a tailoress and dressmaker. This makes us think that the family was always well dressed and did not suffer for lack of shoes. They lived on a farm and produced much of the food needed for such a large family. At the age of nine, Henry, who was growing to be a strong husky boy, started to tend cattle for various farmers in the area, and earned enough to help keep his own needs. He enjoyed this immensely because he would take the cows out to where there was good pasture, then round them up at night and take them home. During the day he learned to enjoy the great outdoors. Fishing was his greatest pleasure. Each day one of the farmers wives packed a good lunch for him. He tells of the halls of home, churned butter and good homemade bread and rolls he would get. He could hardly wait to get a short distance away, so he could start munching. He herded cattle through the summer till his family left for America. As he has many times stated, skiing was one of his favorite sports, and with all the snow and hills he became quite a professional on skis, and was daring enough to take many a high and dangerous jumps. Through the winter he attended school near by their home. He did very well in school. His marks in school were always at the top, and of course as good or better than his sisters and brother, Carl. He enjoyed school and nearly always had a crush on the teacher. Henry had an uncle and aunt, Farbro Daniel (fathers’ brother) who wanted to adopt him, as they had no children and felt he couldn’t be missed much from such a large family of thirteen children, and they had the means to provide for him. This his mother and dad could never agree to, because they loved them all, and maybe Henry didn’t want to leave his happy family. At the age of fourteen, his parents decided to leave Sweden, and try their luck in America, taking the then Carl 18, Vera 16, Henry 14, Mamie 12, and Svea, the youngest 9. Their daughter Tyra, who was married to Emil Johnson and had a son Gustan, also accompanied them. Their oldest daughter, Emily, was married to Pete Peterson, who had preceded them to American and lived on a farm near Park Rapids, Minn. The Johnson family lived with them for a short time until they settled on a farm near Sebeka, Minn. There Henry attended country school for a couple of years, helping out with the farm work when he had the spare time. His family attended Lutheran Church in Sebeka, from which Henry was confirmed at age 15. When he was 16 and 17 he worked on a farm near Park Rapids for Mrs. French and her son Walter. Later he moved to Bemidji, Minn. where he worked in saw mills and logging camps. In his early years he found several cute Finnish girls that he was interested in and tells about, but he tried an experiment to find out who he was to marry. He placed a girl’s name under each of four clumps of sod. In the morning, if a living bug was found under one, that was the girl he was going to marry. To his surprise and pleasure he found a bug under Hilda Ohngren. From

What are automatic license plate readers?

Automatic license plate readers are devices that can be mounted on police cars or fixed on poles or on the roadside to scan the license plates of all cars passing by. These readers capture, at minimum, the license plate number of a car as well as its date, time and location. Today’s license plate readers use “specialized digital cameras and computers to quickly capture large numbers of photographs of license plates, convert them to text and compare them quickly to a large number of plates of interest.” The “plates of interest” are contained in the “hot list” that is downloaded into the license plate reader and may include data from terrorist watch lists, stolen cars or parking scofflaws. The system alerts if a license plate of a car passing matches a “plate of interest.”

A letter from Granny (back by popular demand)

Dear Son, The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a “honk if you love Jesus” bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, I’m glad I did! What an uplifting experience that followed! I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is and I didn’t notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed! I found that LOTS of people love Jesus! Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, “For the love of GOD! GO! GO! Jesus Christ, GO!” What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a “sunny beach”… I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in

the air. Then I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I’ve never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back. A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers grinning and drove on through the intersection. I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” How many people die everyday in the US?

According to the United Nations World Population Prospects report, approximately 7,452 people die every day in the United States. In other words, a person dies in the US approximately every 12 seconds. Note: The numbers in this post were estimated without taking into account the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The net effect of the pandemic on the average number of deaths in the US will not be clear until sometime in the future. Today (December 10, 2020), 3124 deaths were reported due to COVID-19, which is close to 41.9% of the normal number of daily deaths; however, it is possible that deaths due to other causes may have decreased because of widespread social distancing, quarantine, and stay-at-home measures. On the other hand, there may also be an increase in the number of deaths that could have been prevented if medical resources were not focused on COVID-19 patients. More snow

It was a disastrous year for the farmers. The snow fell and fell until the government relief agency had to step in and lend a hand. “It must have been terrible,” said the government man to a farmer. “All that snow.” “Could have been worse,” calmly answered the farmer. “My neighbor had more snow than me.” “How’s that?” asked the government man. “More land,” replied the farmer. Tell me

As Gayle was getting to know Jim and his family, she was very impressed by how much his parents loved each other.“They’re so thoughtful,” Gayle said. “Why, your dad even brings your mom a cup of hot coffee in bed every morning.” After a time, Gayle and Jim were engaged, and then they married. On the way from the wedding to the reception, Gayle again remarked on Jim’s loving parents and even the coffee in bed. “Tell me,” she said, “does it run in the family?” “It sure does,” replied Jim. “And I take after my mom.” 2003 YAMAHA 660 GRIZZLY ATV, BATTERY, solenoid, winch and tires all replaced one year ago, one owner, loading rims included $2,000 firm, cash only, Minden (609)576-4753 PAINTING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, STAINING, cabinets and fine finishes, free estimates, Powers Painting, NV#68615, (775)781-5531

Feeling sorry

Having arrived at the edge of the river, the fisherman soon realized he had forgotten to bring any bait. Just then he happened to see a little snake passing by who had caught a worm. The fisherman snatched up the snake and robbed him of his worm. Feeling sorry for the little snake with no lunch, he snatched him up again and poured a little beer down his throat. Then he went about his fishing. An hour or so later the fisherman felt a tug at his pant leg. Looking down, he saw the same snake with three more worms in his mouth... A lesson in logic

A sixth-grade teacher was giving her pupils a lesson in logic. “Here is the situation,” she said. “A man is standing up in a boat in the middle of a river, fishing. He loses his balance, falls in, and begins splashing and yelling for help. His wife hears the commotion, knows he can’t swim, and runs down to the bank. Why do you think she ran to the bank?” A girl raised her hand and asked, “To withdraw all his money from his savings account?” 98 JEEP WRANGLER SPORT, 93,000 MILES, TOP condition, 4 inch lift, 9000 pound winch, air lockers, Dana 44 differential, custom bumpers/side rails, many extras, Gardnerville (925)528-6440 “Some of my best leading men have been dogs and horses.” - Elizabeth Taylor

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” On the first day

On the first day God created the cow. God said, “You must go to the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer. I will give you a life span of sixty years.” The cow said, “That’s a kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. Let me have twenty years and I’ll give back the other forty.” And God agreed. On the second day, God created the dog. God said, “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. I will give you a life span of twenty years.” The dog said, “That’s too long to be barking. Give me ten years and I’ll give back the other ten.” So God agreed (*sigh*). On the third day God created the monkey. God said, “Entertain people, do monkey tricks, make them laugh. I’ll give you a twenty year life span.” Monkey said, “How boring, monkey tricks for twenty years? I don’t think so. Dog gave you back ten, so that’s what I’ll do too, okay?” And God agreed again (...???...) On the fourth day God created man. God said, “Eat, sleep, play, procreate, enjoy. Do nothing, just enjoy, enjoy. I’ll give you twenty years.” Man said, “What? Only twenty years? No way, man. Tell you what, I’ll take my twenty, and the forty cow gave back, and the ten dog gave back and the ten monkey gave back. That makes eighty, okay?” “Okay,” said God. “You’ve got a deal.” So, that is why for the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play, procreate, enjoy, and do nothing. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain our grandchildren; and for the last ten years we sit in front of the house and bark at everybody.

The Employee and the Boss

Employee: Excuse me sir, may I talk to you? Boss: Sure, come on in. What can I do for you? Employee: Well sir, as you know, I have been an employee of this prestigious firm for over ten years. Boss: Yes. Employee: I won’t beat around the bush. Sir, I would like a raise. I currently have four companies after me and so I decided to talk to you first. Boss: A raise? I would love to give you a raise, but this is just not the right time. Employee: I understand your position, and I know that the current economic down turn has had a negative impact on sales, but you must also take into consideration my hard work, proactiveness and loyalty to this company for over a decade. Boss: Taking into account these factors, and considering I don’t want to start a brain drain, I’m willing to offer you a ten percent raise and an extra five days of vacation time. How does that sound? Employee: Great! It’s a deal! Thank you, sir! Boss: Before you go, just out of curiosity, what companies were after you? “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Can I help you?

As I turned to go down the aisle in the grocery store I spotted him... an elderly man appearing to be lost. As I walked closer I could see a sad look in his eyes. I felt an urge to say something to him. “What should I say?” I wondered to myself. “Can I help you find something?” I heard myself saying. “Thank you, I really need some help,” he answered. “Tell me what you are looking for and I’ll try to help you find it,” I said. “Why did you stop and talk to me? You don’t work here, do you?” he asked. “Well, I could see by the look on your face that you seemed to need help,” I answered. With that, he introduced himself. “Hi, I’m Albert.* This is the first time since my wife died that I’ve been to the grocery store. My wife always did the shopping and I’m really lost in this big store. Thank you for helping me.” I leaned over and gave Albert a hug. I told him that only a few weeks earlier my son, Todd, had died in a car accident. We shared a faint smile knowing that we both had been through a tough time. As I pondered what had happened I realized that going though this grieving time had brought something out in me that wasn’t there before. My eyes seemed to be opened and I noticed other hurting people. I’m sure the year before I would have been like the other people in the store, who walked by and didn’t see the hurt in this man’s eyes. In 2 Corinthians 1:4 it reads: “He helps us in all our troubles, so that we are able to help others who have all kinds of troubles, using the same help that we ourselves have received from God.” God had helped me though this terrible tragedy of my son Todd’s death, and now He was enabling me to see the hurt in others and reach out to help them. Honey, is that you?

A widower who never paid any attention to his wife while she was alive now found himself missing her desperately. He went to a psychic to see if he could contact his late wife. The psychic went into a trance. A strange breeze wafted through the darkened room, and suddenly, the man heard the unmistakable voice of his dearly departed wife. “Honey!” he cried. “Is that you?” “Yes, my husband.” “Are you happy?” “Yes, my husband.” “Happier than you were with me?” “Yes, my husband.” “Then Heaven must be an amazing place!” “I’m not in Heaven, dear.” PUBLISHER’S NOTICE: All real estate advertising in this paper is subject to the Fair Housing Act which makes it illegal to advertise “any preference, limitations or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin, or an intention to make any such preference, limitation or discrimination.” AFFORDABLE NEVADA CCW CLASSES $50, tac-aimfirearmsinstruction.com or (775)360-5214
