Doesn’t it annoy you when...
there’s a car alarm nearby that goes on for hours and the owner is nowhere to be found? ...you buy an answering machine so you won’t miss any calls, and then everyone hangs up when they hear the machine answer? ...there’s a cop car in sight and everyone thinks they have to drive 10-15 mph slower than the speed limit? ...you’re reading a magazine and all those annoying little subscription cards keep falling out? ...you tell someone that a door is locked and they try to open it anyway, like it’ll magically open for them and not you. ...someone says, “well, to make a long story short” and then they go on telling it for another 15 minutes. ...a friend or family member says “Yuck! This is awful!!” and then tells you to try some. ...you have to inform five different sales people in the same store that you’re just looking around. ...you rub on hand cream and can’t turn the bathroom doorknob to get out. ...a waiter or waitress is not around at any time other than right after you put food in your mouth. ...your tire gauge lets half the air in your tire out when all you want is a pressure reading. ...there’s a dog in your neighborhood that barks at EVERYTHING. ...the power goes out, and you discover every flashlight you have has dead batteries. ...someone gets in the express lane at the supermarket and writes a check or uses a credit card. ...the elevator stops at every floor and nobody gets on. ...you almost ALWAYS back up your computer files but the week you don’t, your hard drive crashes and you lose everything.

By Karen Dustman, Woodfords, CA Well, almost!! Here’s the fascinating tale of how Snowshoe’s grave got capped in concrete -- and who’s sleeping in the long-forgotten grave next to him! Snowshoe Thompson, you may remember, exited this life on May 15, 1876 at his ranch in Diamond Valley, California. Just 49 years old, this giant of a man was likely felled by an opponent he had no way to fight: a burst appendix. It took nine long years before Snowshoe’s widow, Agnes, was able to have a tombstone placed on his grave. But when she finally did, the headstone was a thing of beauty. Carved of white marble, it features a carved pair of miniature skis, crossed in silent mourning. But though Snowshoe’s grave was now properly marked, it soon became something of a mess. Agnes died in 1915, and their only son passed away just two years after his father. With no one left to care for the family plot, the ever-present sagebrush and weeds began taking over. Until Decoration Day, 1924, that is. (Never heard of Decoration Day? A predecessor to Memorial Day, Decoration Day was started originally to honor the Civil War dead, and expanded after World War I to include those killed while serving in any war.) On that fateful Decoration Day in 1924, a thoughtful little girl from Gardnerville decided Snowshoe’s grave needed a champion. A “self-appointed guardian angel,” she pulled the weeds and laid fresh flowers on Snowshoe’s almost-forgotten grave that year -- and for several years to come. Even though Snowshoe hadn’t died in a war, she felt he merited special remembrance. As the years passed, other school children took up the cause. And after hearing that “persons unknown” callously attempted to steal Snowshoe’s headstone (unsuccessfully , thank goodness!), children in Genoa began to raise funds to anchor his stone firmly in concrete to ward off a second attempt. Thanks to their efforts, in late May, 1948, the Thompson plot was thoroughly covered over -- in two feet of concrete. (They were serious!) Public-spirited citizens from Genoa, including Carl Falcke, Sr., Arnold Juchtzer, and Joe Gossi, pitched in to do the heavy labor. Thompson’s headstone was safeguarded from thieves, and his family plot was happily protected from further incursions by sagebrush. It’s a great tale of community involvement, and local generosity! Once unkempt, Snowshoe’s grave is now such a point of pride that special signs in the Genoa Cemetery mark the way to his final resting place for eager pilgrims. And next time you pay a visit to Snowshoe’s marble marker, take a brief look around for the long-forgotten grave of John Sauquet in the adjacent plot. Today, nobody even knows Sauquet’s name. But back in Snowshoe’s time, he was a respected citizen in tiny Alpine County. Born in France about 1818, Sauquet was well over forty by the time he arrived at the mining boomtown of Silver Mountain City. He opened a general merchandise store there about 1865, selling groceries, provisions, mining supplies -- and,
Visit us at www.SierraScoop.com
of course, wines! (He was, after all, a Frenchman!) Sauquet did so well that between 1865 and 1870 his inventory jumped from $800 to $2,000 in value -- not an easy feat, in a town where mining busts typically followed its booms. Sauquet tried his own hand as a mining speculator, becoming a trustee of the Mountain Mine. And when mining entrepreneur Lewis Chalmers racked up an unpaid bill at his store approaching $4,000, Sauquet took title to the Imperial Silver Quarries mine as a way to satisfy his judgment. By February, 1881, however, Sauquet (now in his early 60s) had become ill. He ventured as far as San Francisco to consult a doctor, and in October, 1883, moving his merchandise from that now-nearly-abandoned Silver Mountain to the tiny settlement at Silver Creek. Sauquet hung on for just two more years, finally passing away on September 27, 1885. And here’s the fascinating connection to Snowshoe Thompson: Sauquet drew his last breath at the Diamond Valley home of Agnes (Thompson) Scossa. Snowshoe’s widow and her second husband, John Scossa, cared for Sauquet in his final illness. As a token of his gratitude, Sauquet’s left everything he owned to John Scossa in his will -- with assets including real property in San Francisco as well as in Alpine. Which explains why John Sauqet is buried right next to Snowshoe Thompson -- all those old Alpiners knew each other! After all, Snowshoe Thompson -- even though he’s buried in Genoa -- was truly an Alpiner, too. And P.S. -- When you visit, look closely at Snowshoe’s headstone -- the “P” in Thompson is missing! Some say Agnes or John Scossa, not the best spellers, may have mistakenly given that version to the stone-carver. Karen Dustman is an author in Woodfords, California. How to clean and freshen your garbage disposal
Baking Soda and Vinegar: Pour one half cup of baking soda down the kitchen drain. Then, carefully pour one cup of white vinegar on top of the baking soda and place the stopper in the drain to close it off. If you have a double sink, you should do this for both drains. The mixture will fizz and make a bit of noise. Allow this to work its magic for a few minutes while you boil some hot water using a teakettle or medium size pot. Once the water has reached a steady boil, pour it down the drain. Water and Bleach: Using a clean container, mix a gallon of water with one tablespoon of liquid chlorine bleach. Carefully and slowly, pour the solution down the drain and allow it to sit for several minutes. Flush the drain thoroughly with water for several minutes afterward. While bleach kills germs and helps smells it also will harden any grease in your drains, so be sure to flush the drain with warm to hot water instead of cold since this will help to loosen the grease rather than solidify it. Ice and Citrus Peels: Maintaining a clean garbage disposal using one of the above methods will help to keep it smelling fresh and odor-free. You can take this a step further by grinding ice cubes in the garbage disposal to clean the cutting blades. Simply place several cubes in the drain and grind. If you want to add a little bit of scent to the area, you can add rinds from any citrus fruit in the disposal with the ice cubes.

Funeral Expenses
A woman’s husband dies. He had left $30,000 to be used for an elaborate funeral. After everything is done at the funeral home and cemetery, she tells her closest friend that “there is absolutely nothing left from the $30,000.” The friend asks, “How can that be?” The widow says, “Well, the funeral cost was $6,500. And of course I made a donation to the church. That was $500, and I spent another $500 for the wake, food and drinks. The rest went for the memorial stone. The friend says, “$22,500 for the memorial stone? My God, how big is it?” The widow says, “Four and a half carats.” 5 SKYLIGHTS FOR SALE, IN GOOD CONDITION, 26¾ x26¾ at the base, sell for $12 each or all 5 for $55, contact Rusty (775)465-1130 FIREWOOD, SEASONED, SPLIT, ALMOND ONLY $400 a cord, cut to size, under 16”, 16”-18”, 18”-22”, delivery available, Jon (775)246-7186 SMITH VALLEY IRRIGATION – SERVING NEVADA and Sierra Communities for 40 Years with Ag Irrigation Systems and Parts (775)465-2316

Submitted by Ron Landmann, Carson City You graduated high school in 2011. Your teenage years were a struggle. You grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Your mother was the leader of the family and worked tirelessly to keep a roof over your head and food on your plate. Academics were a struggle for you and your grades were mediocre at best. The only thing that made you stand out is you weighed 225 lbs and could run 40 yards in 4.2 seconds while carrying a football. Your best friend was just like you, except he didn’t play football. Instead of going to football practice after school, he went to work at McDonalds for minimum wage. You were recruited by all the big colleges and spent every weekend of your senior year making visits to universities where coaches and boosters tried to convince you their school was best. They laid out the red carpet for you. Your best friend worked double shifts at Mickey D’s. College was not an option for him. On the day you signed with Big State University, your best friend signed paperwork with his Army recruiter. You went to summer workouts. He went to basic training. You spent the next four years living in the athletic dorm, eating at the training table. You spent your Saturdays on the football field, cheered on by adoring fans. Tutors attended to your every academic need. You attended class when you felt like it. Sure, you worked hard. You lifted weights, ran sprints, studied plays, and soon became one of the top football players in the country. Your best friend was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. While you were in college, he deployed to Iraq once and Afghanistan twice. He became a Sergeant and led a squad of 19 year old soldiers who grew up just like he did. He shed his blood in Afghanistan and watched young American’s give their lives, limbs, and innocence for the USA. You went to the NFL combine and scored off the charts. You hired an agent and waited for draft day. You were drafted in the first round and your agent immediately went to work, ensuring that you received the most money possible. You signed for $16 million although you had never played a single down of professional football. Your best friend reenlisted in the Army for four more years. As a combat tested sergeant, he will be paid $32,000 per year. You will drive a Ferrari on the streets of South Beach. He will ride in the back of a Blackhawk helicopter with 10 other combat loaded soldiers. You will sleep at the Ritz. He will dig a hole in the ground and try to sleep. You will “make it rain” in the club. He will pray for rain as the temperature reaches 120 degrees. On Sunday, you will run into a stadium as tens of thousands of fans cheer and yell your name. For your best friend, there is little difference between Sunday and any other day of the week. There are no adoring fans There are only people trying to kill him and his soldiers. Every now and then, he and his soldiers leave the front lines and “go to the rear” to rest. He might be lucky enough to catch an NFL game on TV. When the National Anthem plays and you take a knee, he will
Visit us at www.SierraScoop.com
jump to his feet and salute the television. While you protest the unfairness of life in the United States, he will give thanks to God that he has the honor of defending his great country. To the players of the NFL: We are the people who buy your tickets, watch you on TV, and wear your jerseys. We anxiously wait for Sundays so we can cheer for you and marvel at your athleticism. Although we love to watch you play, we care little about your opinions until you offend us. You have the absolute right to express yourselves, but we have the absolute right to boycott you. We have tolerated your drug use and DUIs, your domestic violence, and your vulgar displays of wealth. We should be ashamed for putting our admiration of your physical skills before what is morally right. But now you have gone too far. You have insulted our flag, our country, our soldiers, our police officers, and our veterans. You are living the American dream, yet you disparage our great country. I am done with NFL football and encourage all like minded Americans to boycott the NFL as well. National boycott of the NFL for Sunday November 11th, Veterans Day Weekend. Boycott all football telecast, all fans, all ticket holders, stay away from attending any games, let them play to empty stadiums. Pass this along to all your friends and family. Honor our military, some of whom come home with the American Flag draped over their coffin. CRAFTSMAN RADIAL ARM SAW, GOOD WORKING condition with blades $100, Call (775)463-4419

White Ball
In my hand I hold a ball…. white and dimpled, rather small…. Oh, how bland it does appear…. this harmless looking little sphere…. By its size I could not guess…. the awesome strength it does possess…. But since I fell beneath its spell…. I’ve wandered through the fires of hell... My life has not been quite the same…. Since I chose to play this stupid game…. It rules my mind for hours on end…A fortune it has made me spend…. It has made me swear and yell and cry…. I hate myself and want to die…. It promises a thing called par…. If I can hit straight and far …. To master such a tiny ball…. Should not be very hard at all… But my desires the ball refuses….and does exactly like it chooses…. It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies….and even disappears before my eyes…. Often it will take a whim….to hit a tree or take a swim…. With miles of grass on which to land….it finds a tiny patch of sand…. Then has me offering up my soul…. if only it would find the hole…. It’s made me whimper like a pup…. and swear that I will give it up…. And take a drink to ease my sorrow…. but the ball knows….. I’ll be back tomorrow!!!!
Soda Machine
There was a beautiful naive young lady at a soda machine in Vegas, and she arrived there just before a business man came to quench his thirst. She opened her purse and put in 50 cents, studied the machine a short while, pushed a Diet Coke selection, and out came a Diet Coke. She placed it on a counter next to the machine. Then she reached in her purse again and pulled out a dollar and inserted it in the machine. Studying the machine carefully, she pushed the button for Coke Classic and out came a Coke Classic and 50 cents change. She immediately took the 50 cents and put it in the machine, studied it for a moment and pushed the Mountain Dew button. Out came a Mountain Dew. She placed them both on the counter next to the Diet Coke. As she was reaching into her purse again, the business man, who’d been waiting patiently for several minutes by then, spoke up. “Excuse me, miss, but are you done yet?” She looked at him and indignantly asked, “Well Duh! Can’t you see I’m still winning?” A BAD TILE JOB CAN BE LIKE A BAD HAIRCUT, but it doesn’t grow back, so don’t get hacked! Done right the first time, Sundance Tile and Marble, NV#58795 (775)691-9954

Henpecked
A husband is advised by a psychiatrist to assert himself. “You don’t have to let your wife henpeck you! Go home and show her you are the boss!” Of course, the husband takes the doctor’s advice. He rushes home, slams the door, shakes his fist in his wife’s face, and growls, “From now on, you’re taking orders from me! I want my supper right now and when you get it on the table, go upstairs and lay out my best clothes. Tonight, I’m going out with the boys and you are going to stay at home where you belong! And another thing... guess who’s going to comb my hair, give me a shave, and tie my necktie?” His wife says calmly, “The undertaker.”

A Texas Ghost Story Oh, you’ve heard the stories about how dangerous Ouija boards are, but hey—it’s just a game. Mary waited until midnight to begin our little game, and the four of us—Sarah, Jessie, me, and, Mary, started by asking all kinds of silly questions. It was a strange-looking board, covered with letters and symbols. There was a plastic pointer that was supposed to move across the board at the behest of the spirits. The instructions called it a planchette. Around one thirty in the morning, the planchette suddenly froze in Mary’s hand. It wouldn’t move, no matter how much we pushed and pulled. Mary turned her frightened blue eyes toward me. “I’m not doing it,” she said, lifting her hands. I grabbed the planchette myself and tried to push it around, but it was fixed to the board. Suddenly, a kind of electric shock buzzed through my fingers. I gasped and tried to pull my fingers from the planchette, but they were stuck. Mary and Jessie both tried to pull my fingers away, nothing helped. The other girls stared with wide, round eyes, as the planchette came alive under my fingers—which were still fixed to its surface—and began to move. “Help.” The words spelled out under my hand. “Help me. Help me.” The planchette kept moving back and forth between the h – e – l – p continuously, until Sarah cried out: “Who are you?” “Amber.” The board spelled. “My name is Amber. I am eight years old.” “What’s wrong?” Mary asked. Her face was so white all the freckles stood out like darkened age spots. “Water. Danger. Help. Scared.” The words spelled out as fast as my hand could move. “Call 9-1-1,” Mary cried suddenly. “Quick. Amber is in danger.” By this time, Sarah was gasping into the phone. Then she hung up the phone. “They wouldn’t listen to me,” she told us, almost in tears. At that instant, my hand was suddenly free from the planchette. “She’s gone,” I gasped, “See if you can contact her again,” Mary said urgently. “We need to know if she’s okay!” I picked up the plastic planchette again. “Amber, are you there?” I asked softly, afraid of what might happen. After a long pause, it moved slowly across the board and spelled out the words: “Too late.” And after another long pause. “Water. Flood. Drowned. Mobile. Alabama.” The planchette stopped. I knew that Amber was gone. None of us got much sleep that night. In the morning, we rushed through breakfast and then looked up the Alabama news on the Internet. None of us were surprised to read that there had been flash floods the night before. I read the names of those who had died in the flood. One of the victims was an eight-year-old girl named Amber. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Daffodil Principle
Words of Wisdom...
Always wanted to be a procrastinator, but never got around to it. My friend has kleptomania, but when it gets bad, he takes something for it. Never be afraid to try something new, Remember amateurs built the ark - Professionals built the Titanic. Love is grand - divorce is a hundred grand. Politicians and diapers have one thing in common, they should both be changed regularly and for the same reason. One of life’s mysteries - How can a two pound box of candy make a person gain five pounds. Time may be a great healer, but it’s also a lousy beautician. Age doesn’t always bring wisdom, sometimes age comes alone. Life not only begins at forty, it begins to show. TIRED OF BEING DULL? Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, “Mother, you must come see the daffodils before they are over.” I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. “I will come next Tuesday,” I promised, a little reluctantly, on her third call. Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn’s house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, “Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see bad enough to drive another inch!” My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this all the time, Mother.” “Well, you won’t get me back on the road until it clears, and then I’m heading for home!” I assured her. “I was hoping you’d take me over to the garage to pick up my car.” “How far will we have to drive?” “Just a few blocks,” Carolyn said. “I’ll drive. I’m used to this.” After several minutes, I had to ask, “Where are we going? This isn’t the way to the garage!” “We’re going to my garage the long way,” Carolyn smiled, “by way of the daffodils.” “Carolyn,” I said sternly, “please turn around.” “It’s all right, Mother, I promise. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.” After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read, “Daffodil Garden.” We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight. It looked as though someone had taken a great vat of gold and poured it down over the mountain peak and slopes. The flowers were planted in majestic, swirling patterns-great ribbons and swaths of deep orange, white, lemon yellow, salmon pink, saffron, and butter yellow. Each different-colored variety was planted as a group so that it swirled and flowed like its own river with its own unique hue. There were five acres of flowers. “But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn. “It’s just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “She lives on the property. That’s her home.” Carolyn pointed to a well kept A frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio, we saw a poster. “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking” was the headline. The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs,” it read. The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.” There it was, The Daffodil Principle. For me, that moment was a life-changing experience. Continued...

Rare Work of Art
A man decides to take the opportunity while his wife is away to paint the toilet seat. The wife comes home sooner than expected, sits, and gets the seat stuck to her rear. She is understandably distraught about this and asks her husband to drive her to the doctor. She puts on a large overcoat in order to hide the stuck seat, and they go. As soon as they reach the doctors clinic, the husband lifts his wife’s coat to show their predicament. Then he asks, “Doctor, have you ever seen anything like this before?” “Well yes,” the doctor replies, “but never framed.” I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than forty years before, had begun-one bulb at a timeto bring her vision of beauty and joy to an obscure mountain top. Still, just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, had changed the world. This unknown woman had forever changed the world in which she lived. She had created something of ineffable (indescribable) magnificence, beauty, and inspiration. The principle her daffodil garden taught is one of the greatest principles of celebration. That is, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time-often just one baby-step at a time-and learning to love the doing, learning to use the accumulation of time. When we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world. “It makes me sad in a way,” I admitted to Carolyn. “What might I have accomplished if I had thought of a wonderful goal thirty-five or forty years ago and had worked away at it ‘one bulb at a time’ through all those years. Just think what I might have been able to achieve!” My daughter summed up the message of the day in her usual direct way. “Start tomorrow,” she said. It’s so pointless to think of the lost hours of yesterdays. The way to make learning a lesson of celebration instead of a cause for regret is to only ask, “How can I put this to use today?”

Efficiency Expert
The efficiency expert concluded his lecture with a note of caution. You don’t want to try these techniques at home. “Why not?” asked somebody from the audience. “I watched my wife’s routine at breakfast for years,” the expert explained. “She made lots of trips between the refrigerator, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying a single item at a time. One day I told her, Hon, why don’t you try carrying several things at once?” “Did it save time?” the guy in the audience asked. “Actually, yes”, replied the expert. “It used to take her 20 minutes to make breakfast. Now I do it in seven.” MIGUEL’S GARDEN SERVICE, FULL LAWN MAINTENANCE, clean up, fertilizing, dead shrubs and trees pulled out, excellent references, great rates, serving Carson Valley 27+ years! Do you remember the word mergatroyd? Would you believe the email spell checker did not recognize the word Mergatroyd? Heavens to Mergatroyd! The other day a not so elderly (I say 75) lady said something to her son about driving a Jalopy and he looked at her quizzically and said “What the heck is a Jalopy?” He never heard of the word jalopy!! She knew she was old..... but not that old. Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory after you read this and chuckle. About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included “Don’t touch that dial,” “Carbon copy,” “You sound like a broken record,” “Hung out to dry” and “Button your lips.” Back in the olden days we had a lot of ‘moxie.’ We’d put on our best ‘bib and tucker’ to’ straighten up and fly right’. Heavens to Betsy! Gee whillikers! Jumping Jehoshaphat! Holy moley! We were ‘in like Flynn’ and ‘living the life of Riley’’, and even a regular guy couldn’t accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China! Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when’s the last time anything was swell? Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys and the D.A.; of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedal pushers...AND DON’T FORGET.... Saddle Stitched Pants. Oh, my aching back! Kilroy was here, but he isn’t anymore. We wake up from what surely has been just a short nap, and before we can say, Well, I’ll be ‘a monkey’s uncle!’ Or, This is a ‘fine kettle of fish’! We discover that the words we grew up with, the words that seemed omnipresent, as oxygen, have vanished with scarcely a notice from our tongues and our pens and our keyboards. Poof, go the words of our youth, the words we’ve left behind. We blink, and they’re gone. Where have all those great phrases gone? Let’s all go to the beach Saturday”... Long gone: Pshaw, the milkman did it. Hey! It’s your nickel. Don’t forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper. Well, Fiddlesticks! Going like sixty. I’ll see you in the funny papers. Don’t take any wooden nickels. Wake up and smell the roses. It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter has liver pills. This can be disturbing stuff! (“Carter’s Little Liver Pills” are gone too!) We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changeable times. For a child each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age. We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist and there were words that once strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and now are heard no more, except in our collective memory. It’s one of the greatest advantages of aging. Leaves us to wonder where Superman will find a phone booth... See ya later, alligator! Okidoki artichoki, after a while crocodile!

Living to 80
I recently picked a new primary care physician. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing “fairly well” for my age. A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, “Do you think I’ll live to be 80?” He asked, “Do you smoke tobacco or drink beer or wine?” “Oh no,” I replied. “I’m not doing drugs, either.” Then he asked, “Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?” I said, “No, my other Doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy.” “Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?” “No, I don’t,” I said. He asked, “Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a love life?” “No,” I said. “I don’t do any of those things.” He looked at me and said, “Then why do you give a darn?” MEDI-MIST NEBULIZER, HEAVY DUTY BY MOUNTAIN Medical Equipment, Inc. with accessories $25 (775)762-2220 HIGH ROLLERS PAINTING FOR ALL YOUR PAINTING needs! If My Body Were a Car
My paint job is a little dull, my headlights are out of focus. I’m no longer very mobile, my body’s an old aged carcass. My bodywork’s full of varicose scratches, I’m in need of cosmetic work. My brakes make nasty screeches, that stop me with a jerk. My traction is not as graceful, I slip and slide and skid. I have to drive quite careful, never mind what weather I’m in. It takes me hours to reach a speed, my fuel rate burns inefficiently. I need some TLC to succeed, and nice accessories that are costly. Every time I sneeze or cough, my radiator leaks. My exhaust backfires a lot, and my tires now tend to squeak. Yes, if my body was a car, I’d trade it in for sure. I think I’d choose a jaguar, with a body all slick and grandeur! Why Does Time Seem to Speed Up with Age?
“Where did the time go?” middle-aged and older adults often remark. Many of us feel that time passes more quickly as we age, a perception that can lead to regrets. According to psychologist and BBC columnist Claudia Hammond, “the sensation that time speeds up as you get older is one of the biggest mysteries of the experience of time.” Fortunately, our attempts to unravel this mystery have yielded some intriguing findings. In 2005, for instance, psychologists Marc Wittmann and Sandra Lenhoff, both then at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, surveyed 499 participants, ranging in age from 14 to 94 years, about the pace at which they felt time moving— from “very slowly” to “very fast.” For shorter durations—a week, a month, even a year—the subjects’ perception of time did not appear to increase with age. Most participants felt that the clock ticked by quickly. But for longer durations, such as a decade, a pattern emerged: older people tended to perceive time as moving faster. When asked to reflect on their lives, the participants older than 40 felt that time elapsed slowly in their childhood but then accelerated steadily through their teenage years into early adulthood. There are good reasons why older people may feel that way. When it comes to how we perceive time, humans can estimate the length of an event from two very different perspectives: a prospective vantage, while an event is still occurring, or a retrospective one, after it has ended. In addition, our experience of time varies with whatever we are doing and how we feel about it. In fact, time does fly when we are having fun. Engaging in a novel exploit makes time appear to pass more quickly in the moment. But if we remember that activity later on, it will seem to have lasted longer than more mundane experiences. The reason? Our brain encodes new experiences, but not familiar ones, into memory, and our retrospective judgment of time is based on how many new memories we create over a certain period. In other words, the more new memories we build on a weekend getaway, the longer that trip will seem in hindsight. This phenomenon, which Hammond has dubbed the holiday paradox, seems to present one of the best clues as to why, in retrospect, time seems to pass more quickly the older we get. From childhood to early adulthood, we have many fresh experiences and learn countless new skills. As adults, though, our lives become more routine, and we experience fewer unfamiliar moments. As a result, our early years tend to be relatively overrepresented in our autobiographical memory and, on reflection, seem to have lasted longer. Of course, this means we can also slow time down later in life. We can alter our perceptions by keeping our brain active, continually learning skills and ideas, and exploring new places. Leaning Slightly
I have this friend who always seemed to lean slightly to the left all the time. It used to bother me, so I suggested he see a doctor, and have his legs checked out. For years, he refused … told me I was crazy. But last week, he finally went, and sure enough, the doctor discovered his left leg was 1/4 inch shorter than his right. A quick bit of orthopedic surgery later, he was cured, and both legs are exactly the same length now, and he no longer leans. “So,” I said, “You didn’t believe me when I told you a doctor could fix your leg.” He just looked at me and said, … “I stand corrected.” WE’LL KEEP YOU IN STITCHES, WE COVER autos, furniture and ATV’s, 47 years experience, Tweeds Upholstery, Gardnerville, tweedsupholstery@yahoo.com or (775)782-5812 ANTIQUE MIRROR, EXTRA LARGE 51”X68”, 5” thick ornate gold frame $2,500 (775)392-0044 BLIND AND WINDOW CLEANING SERVICES, residential and commercial, multi story specialist, mobile blind cleaning, pressure washing, awning cleaning, Call Unlimited for a clear view! A police officer pulls over a speeding car. The officer says, “I clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir.” The driver says, “Gee, officer, I had it on cruise control at 60, perhaps your radar needs calibrating.” Not looking up from her knitting the wife says sweetly from the passenger seat, “Now don’t be silly, dear, you know that this car doesn’t have cruise control.” As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls, “Can’t you keep your mouth closed for once?” The wife smiles demurely and says, “You should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did.” As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth, “Darn it, woman, can’t you keep your mouth shut.” The officer frowns and says, “And I notice that you’re not wearing your seat belt, sir. That’s an automatic $75 fine.” The driver says, “Yeah, well, you see officer, I had it on, but took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket.” The wife says,” Now, dear, you know very well that you didn’t have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you’re driving.” And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket the driver turns to his wife and barks, “WHY DON’T YOU SHUT THE HECK UP??” The officer looks over at the woman and asks, “Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma’am?” “No, officer. Only when he’s been drinking.” SEW-WHAT UPHOLSTERY, CUSTOM work, leather and antiques, 40+ years experience, Carson Valley, Leslie (775)901-2035 PUBLISHER’S NOTICE: All real estate advertising in this paper is subject to the Fair Housing Act which makes it illegal to advertise “any preference, limitations or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin, or an intention to make any such preference, limitation or discrimination.” This magazine will not knowingly accept any advertisement for real estate which is a violation of the law; our readers are hereby informed that all dwellings advertised in this publication are available on an equal opportunity basis. Roberta McCain (born February 7, 1912) is the centenarian widow of Admiral John S. McCain Jr. and mother of the Republican Arizona Senator and two-time Presidential candidate John S. McCain III. Roberta Wright and her identical twin sister Rowena (1912–2011) were born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on February 7, 1912. Their parents, Archibald Wright (1874–1971), a Los Angeles oil wildcatter, and Myrtle Mae Fletcher (1885– 1972), were married in Cleburne, Texas, on June 18, 1901. On January 21, 1933, she eloped to Tijuana, Mexico with a naval ensign, later to become four-star Admiral John S. McCain, Jr. in Caesar’s Bar. She was attending the University of Southern California and McCain was attached to USS Oklahoma (BB-37). She became the daughter-in-law of Admiral John S. McCain, Sr., a noted World War II carrier admiral under Fleet Admiral William Halsey. In 1952, she was the ship sponsor for USS John S. McCain (DL-3), named for her father-in-law. She was also an honored guest at the 1992 launching of USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) which was named for her husband and her father-in-law. She was also active in Navy Wives Clubs. For example, during Christmas 1971, she traveled to Saigon and presented $1,000 ($5,914 today) and 14 boxes of clothing to the Vietnam Advisory Board of Operation Helping Hand on behalf of the Pearl Harbor area Navy Wives Clubs. Roberta McCain has three children: Jean Alexandra “Sandy” (McCain) Morgan (born 1934), John Sidney McCain III (born 1936), and Joseph Pinckney “Joe” McCain II (born 1942), twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. As a Navy family, the couple moved around as the Navy required. Shortly after they were married, the McCains moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where her husband was stationed in 1933–1934, and where their daughter was born. They returned to Pearl Harbor in 1968 from the Admiral’s post in London as commander of US European Naval Forces where they lived at the time of their son’s capture in Vietnam. It was in Pearl Harbor that the couple awaited the release of their son from captivity. In June 1968, Roberta McCain told Parade magazine, “Religion has been of great importance to us in our concern for Johnny, religion and the military tradition of my husband’s family. We all pray for the time when we’ll see Johnny again. In 1971, she requested no special sympathy for her in regards to her son’s captivity. She said navy tradition was important in the family, her daughter married a naval officer, John McCain III became a naval aviator and her youngest son Joe enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam war. Her son John was held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for five and a half years. When notified upon his release on March 15, 1973, that he had shouted expletives at his captors, Mrs. McCain’s response was, “Johnny, I’m going to come over there and wash your mouth out with soap.” John McCain had said of his mother: “My mother was raised to be a strong, determined woman who thoroughly enjoyed life...Continued

October 26th - Nevada Day 28
Leila M. Wells, Part 5 WASHING - I’ve just returned home from the laundromat and I couldn’t help thinking how it would seem to do my laundry the way my grandmother did hers or even as my mother did. I remember watching my grandmother do her washing one summer day when I was seven or eight years old. First my uncle filled a large iron kettle from the brook near the “wash place” which was a little way from the back of the house, near the brook and under some trees. The kettle was set on three or four large stones and a fire was built under it. When the water was hot, some of it was put into a large wooden “wash tub” which set on a bench nearby. Into this Grandma put the sheets and pillow slips after adding a generous amount of soft soap and then she put in the “rub board” and proceeded to give each article a good rubbing. After each article was rubbed it was dropped into the big kettle and boiled. After each article had been rubbed and boiled it was rinsed in several waters from the brook and spread on the grass to dry. The colored clothing was not boiled but was rubbed extra and spread on the bushes to dry. Mother’s washings were similar only her wash water was heated on the kitchen stove in a “boiler.” This was a tin or copper, oblong vessel with a cover And she had a “pound barrel” and “pounder.” The barrel was hard wood and the clothes were pounded with an article similar to the old dasher of a churn until someone invented a pounder with a spring. Some “pounders” were blocks of wood about six inches across and ten inches high, fastened to an old broom stick. The first washing machines were open tubs with a corrugated lining and a semi-circle rub board and was hand operated. Only a few articles could be washed at a time in them. The closed tubs came soon after and were still hand operated. Then someone invented one that could be operated by a dog or goat in a tread mill attached to the wheel of the machine by a leather band. Grandma wrung her clothes by hand but Mother had a wringer which was a great help, both in time and strain on the clothes. There used to be considerable competition to see which woman would get her clothes on the line first on Monday morning. And if you didn’t wash on Monday you were considered a poor housekeeper. One woman remarked that she couldn’t wash or iron and be a Christian all in one day. The ironing was done with flat-irons heated on the kitchen stove and usually consisted of a set of three — two heated while one was used. A collection of old flat irons, as they were called, makes an interesting exhibit at any antique show. 14’ ALUMINUM BOAT AND TRAILER, 9.9 JOHNSON 2 stroke electric start motor, Minn Kota electric trolling motor 50lb thrust, many extras, runs great $1,200 OBO; Hi-axle welding torch cart 12” wheels, torch hoses and gauges $75 OBO; Tread climber TC3000 very good shape $300 OBO; text or call Don/Yerington (775)224-3247

After Having Their 11th Child...
After having their 11th child, an Arkansas couple decided that was enough, as they could not afford a larger bed. So, the husband went to his veterinarian and told him that he and his cousin didn’t want to have any more children. The doctor told him that there was a procedure called a vasectomy that could fix the problem, but that it was expensive. A less costly alternative, said the doctor, was to go home, get a cherry bomb (fireworks are legal in Arkansas), light it, put it in a beer can, then hold the can up to his ear and count to 10. The Arkansan said to the doctor, “I may not be the smartest man in the world, but I don’t see how putting a cherry bomb in a beer can next to my ear is going to help me.” “Trust me,” said the doctor. So, the man went home, lit a cherry bomb and put it in a beer can. He held the can up to his ear and began to count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 at which point he paused, placed the beer can between his legs, and resumed counting on his other hand. This procedure also works in Mississippi and Alabama. Prevent Carved Pumpkins from Rotting
Wash down the outside before carving. Before you reach for those carving tools, keep your carved pumpkin safe from squishiness by wiping down the outside with a diluted bleach solution. This will remove microbes. Do the same to all surfaces after you finish your masterpiece. Stay cool. Keep your carved pumpkin out of direct sunlight and refrigerate it for up to ten days when not on display. Choose battery-operated LED lights. Instead of a candle or traditional light strands, which throw too much heat and contribute to decay. Surprise at the Wedding
A wedding took place at an upscale university in South Carolina. It was a huge wedding with about 300 guests. After the wedding, at the reception, the groom got up on stage at the microphone to talk to the crowd. He said that he wanted to thank everyone for coming, many from long distances, to support them at their wedding. He especially wanted to thank the bride’s and groom’s families for coming, and to thank his new father-in-law for providing such a fabulous reception. To thank everyone for coming and bringing gifts, he said he wanted to give everyone a special gift just from him. Taped to the bottom of everyone’s chair was a manila envelope. He said that this was his gift and told everyone to open their envelopes. Inside each envelope was an 8x10 photo of his best man “making out” ... with the bride. He had gotten suspicious of the two of them and hired a private detective to trail them weeks prior to the wedding. After he stood there and watched the people’s reactions for a couple of minutes, he turned to the best man and cursed him. He turned to his bride and cursed her. Then he turned to the dumbfounded crowd and said, “I’m out of here!” He had the marriage annulled first thing that Monday morning. While most of us would have broken off the engagement immediately after finding out about the affair, this man went through with it anyway, as if nothing was wrong.
His revenge? Letting everyone know exactly what happened...and making the bride’s parents pay over $32,000 for the wedding. Have you ever seen an apple sign its name? Maybe not , but the apple, along with all other fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, do have signatures that are all written in a code of tens of thousands of unique phytonutrients. These phytonutrients support the body’s on-going fight against infection, inflammation, oxidative damage, skeletal degeneration, and neurodegeneration. Food signatures or ‘doctrine of signatures’ is an ancient science describing that all living things, plants and humans, have the same pattern of life in their DNA, and whole foods have a pattern that resemble a body organ or function benefiting the specific organ when eaten. Here are a few examples. A tomato is red and inside has four chambers that resemble the four chambers of the heart and Tomatoes are rich in antioxidants and lycopene which we know are good for the heart. The cross-section of a carrot resembles the human eye and they contain rich sources of beta-carotene that enhances blood flow and function in our eyes. Celery, which looks like a bone, contains rich amounts of sodium and potassium needed for strong bones. A walnut closely resembles the human brain and they contain healthy fats that produce neuro-transmitters and enhance memory and mental function. Sweet potatoes resemble our pancreas and eating them can strengthen and help balance blood sugar levels when insulin is released from the pancreas. Finally, the avocado which closely resembles a pregnant female womb, helps balance hormones and prevents cervical cancers. And did you know that it takes 9 months for an avocado to grow from blossom to the ripened fruit? When a whole food is processed and refined it loses its original natural nutrients and cannot provide us with its full healing powers. By choosing whole foods you are maximizing the amount of nutrients your body is receiving that is needed to prevent disease and sustain a vibrant life! Next time you pick up a fresh whole fruit or vegetable, you can now think about the natural connection between the food and your body. The Mirror...
An old man and his wife lived deep in the hills and seldom saw many people. One day a peddler came by to sell his goods and asked the man if he or his wife wanted to buy anything. “Well, my wife ain’t home, she’s gone down to the crick to wash clothes, but lemme see what you got,” said the man. The peddler showed him pots and pans, tools and gadgets, but the old man wasn’t interested. Then the man spotted a mirror and said, “What’s that?” Before the peddler could tell him it was a mirror, the old man picked it up and said, “My God how’d you get a picture of my Pappy?” The old man was so happy, he traded his wife’s best pitcher for it. The peddler left before the wife came back and spoiled his sale. The old man was worried that the wife would be mad at him for trading her best pitcher, so he hid it in the barn behind some boxes of junk. He would go out to the barn 2 or 3 times a day to look at the “picture” and eventually the wife got suspicious. One day she got fed up and after he retired for the night, she went out to the barn. She saw the mirror behind the boxes, picked it up and said, “so this is the hussy he’s been foolin’ around with!”

Juul, the vape device teens are getting hooked on
One of the biggest topics right now in high school parent newsletters everywhere is the Juul. It consists of a long, slim vaporizer and disposable “pods” of nicotine juice. The pods come in flavors such as mango, creme brulee and cucumber. It looks a lot like a USB flash drive. Each pod has about the same amount of nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, or 200 puffs. Specifically, the nicotine concentration is 59 mg/mL per pod, which can be more than double that of other vaping products. It gives users a strong, fast punch. Doctors are concerned there’s a misconception among teens that e-cigarettes are safe. Smoking e-cigarettes actually delivers cancer-causing chemicals that get into the body — and popular fruity flavors appear to be the worst, researchers reported recently. Golf Shot
Vic stood over his tee shot on the 450-yard 18th hole for what seemed an eternity. He waggled, looked up, looked down, waggled again, but didn’t start his back swing. Finally, his exasperated partner asked, ‘What the heck is taking so long?’ ‘My wife is watching me from the clubhouse balcony’, Vic explained. ‘I want to make a perfect shot.’ His buddy said ‘You don’t have a chance in he#@ of hitting her from here.’
