“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Hand me downs

Send her back to the U.S.

George went on a vacation to the Middle East with his family, including his mother-in-law. During their vacation in Jerusalem, George’s mother-in-law died. With the death certificate in his hand, George went to the American Consulate Office to make arrangements to send the body back to the United States for a proper burial. The Consul told George that to send the body back to the United States for burial is very, very expensive. It could cost him as much as $5,000.00. The Consul told him, in most cases the person responsible for the remains normally decides to bury the body here in Jerusalem. This would only cost him $150.00. George thinks for some time and answers, “I don’t care how much it will cost to send the body back, that’s what I want to do.” The Consul says, “You must have loved your mother-in-law very much considering the difference in price”. “No, it’s not that,” says George. “You see, I know of a case many, many years ago of a man that was buried here in Jerusalem. On the third day he arose from the dead! I just can’t take that chance! PART TIME EMPLOYMENT, NON-PROFIT AGENCY; flexible hours working with seniors. Aside from socks and underwear at Christmas and an occasional new pair of sneakers, I never got any new clothes as a child. What I got were hand-me-downs. My coats, jackets, shirts, sweaters, pants, and even belts were all clothes that my older brothers had out grown and then been given to me. My clothes were often torn, sewed, and patched. They were never “in style.” I didn’t resent having to wear them, though. We weren’t rich and new clothes were a luxury not a necessity. That is just the way it was. Most of my friends in school were dressed in hand-me- downs as well. Even today I often shop at thrift stores and rarely buy new what I can find used. It is just who I am. I happily reject the march of materialism that so many others follow and find my true treasures not in money but in people, not in stuff but in ideas, not in things from the stores but in feelings from the heart. Looking back too I realize that clothes weren’t the only thing my Mom, Dad, and Nana handed down to me. They also handed down a deep compassion for other people and a desire to help them. They handed down a respect for this world and a delight in all living things be they flowers, plants, birds, or bugs. They handed down a sense of justice and fair play. They handed down a sense of pride in hard work and a job well done. They handed down a thirst for knowledge and wisdom. They handed down their kindness, good cheer, and happiness in doing good for others. They handed down a faith in God, awe for His creation, and joy in His love for us. Most of all they handed down their love. They loved me and instilled in me a love for God, myself, others, and life. They also instilled in me a desire to share all of these things with my own children and with everyone else. What are you going to hand down in this life? What are you going to pass on to others? What are you going to share with the world? Whatever your hand-me-downs are give them with love. Make them gifts from the heart that touch the hearts of those around you. Make them treasures from your soul that others will treasure as well. Long winded...

A man was giving a speech at his lodge meeting. He got a bit carried away and talked for two hours. Finally, he realized what he had done and said, “I’m sorry I talked so long. Things parents use to say, and maybe some still do!

The Illogical: Don’t look at me with those eyes. If you keep making that face, it’ll freeze that way. If you want to act like a child, I’ll treat you like one. Quiet down, I can’t even hear myself think. One day you’ll thank me. Children are to be seen, not heard. Because I said so, that’s why! The Logical: As long as you’re under my roof, you live by my rules. G-d gave you a brain, use it. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. The Sarcastic: Are your legs broken? If all of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you? Oh, Jen’s mom lets her do (such and such)? Then go live with Jen’s mom... I’ll help you pack. Shut the door, were you born in a barn? Your room looks like a cyclone ran through it. Talking to you is like talking to a brick wall. Let’s play the quiet game. Someone better be bleeding. Where are your manners -- were you raised by wolves? The Threatening: I’m not asking, I’m telling. When you have kids, I hope they’re just like you. Don’t you use that tone with me Mister/Missy. Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about. You better wipe that look off your face. Don’t make me: tell you again/come back there/turn this car around et al. CUSTOM CANVAS WORK! Good Morning

As I was hanging the birdfeeder out this morning our neighbors were pulling out of their driveway. I smiled and waved. They, in turn, rolled down their window and called, “Good Morning!” I had a warm and happy feeling just hearing the simple words, “Good Morning.” Our Bible verse says, “Kind words are like honey-- sweet to the taste and good for your health.” Proverbs 16:24 GNT How true this verse is. A simple “Good Morning” was like honey. The words were sweet and I felt good just hearing them. May your day be filled with good thoughts, kind people, and happy moments. 1929 ESSEX PROJECT, SUPER SIX 2 DOOR CHALLENGER Coach plus manuals, spare parts and lots of literature $4,595 (775)315-6487 “Of all my body parts my eyes get the most exercise, I do at least a hundred eye rolls every day.”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Wise Advice from a Farmer’s Wife

Whenever you return a borrowed pie pan, make sure it’s got a warm pie in it. Invite lots of folks to supper. You can always add more water to the soup. There’s no such thing as woman’s work on a farm. There’s just work. Make home a happy place for the children. Everybody returns to their happy place. Always keep a small light on in the kitchen window at night. If your man gets his truck stuck in the field, don’t go in after him. Throw him a rope and pull him out with the tractor. Keep the kerosene lamp away from the milk cow’s leg. It’s a whole lot easier to get breakfast from a chicken than a pig. Always pat the chickens when you take their eggs. It’s easy to clean an empty house, but hard to live in one. All children spill milk. Learn to smile and wipe it up. Homemade’s always better’n store bought. A tongue’s like a knife. The sharper it is the deeper it cuts. A good neighbor always knows when to visit and when to leave. A city dog wants to run out the door, but a country dog stays on the porch ‘cause he’s not fenced-in. Always light birthday candles from the middle outward. Nothin’ gets the frustrations out better’n splittn’ wood. The longer the dress hem, the more trusting the husband. Enjoy doing your children’s laundry. Some day they’ll be gone. You’ll never catch a runnin’ chicken but if you throw seed around the back door you’ll have a skillet full by supper. Biscuits brown better with a little butter brushed on ‘em. Check your shoelaces before runnin’ to help somebody. Visit old people who can’t get out. Some day you’ll be one. The softer you talk, the closer folks’ll listen. The colder the outhouse, the warmer the bed.

I asked a friend of mine by phone what he was doing. I Want To Be A Child Again

I want to be a child again, 6 years old is good. I want to once again think that candy is better than money, because you can eat candy. I want to go to McDonalds and still believe it is a 5 star restaurant. I want to go outside without worrying how my hair looks. I want to go back to the days when music was clean and pure. I remember when I was innocent, and I thought that everyone was happy because I was. I want to distance myself from the complexities of life, and once again become excited over the small things. I want to ride my bike all the way to the park, without worrying that I will get kidnapped. I want to live simple again, I don’t want my days to be full of social media, computers crashing, mountains of paperwork on my desk, and how to survive a few more days during the month when there is no money left in my check book. I want to believe in the power of laughter, of a hug, a handshake, of a kind word, of truth, justice or peace. I want once again to believe in the human race. I wish that each one of us could live a part of that child we all have inside and do not let ourselves be dragged down by the society which surrounds us. If we all thought and acted a little like children, don’t you think a lot of things in the world would be different? Private Grief

A man placed some flowers on the grave of his dearly departed mother and started back toward his car when his attention was diverted to another man kneeling at a grave. The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity and kept repeating, “Why did you have to die? Why did you have to die?” The first man approached him and said, “Sir, I don’t wish to interfere with your private grief, but this demonstration of pain is more than I’ve ever seen before. For whom do you mourn so deeply? A child? A parent?” The mourner took a moment to collect himself, then replied, “My wife’s first husband.”

God Created Man

God created the dog and said: ‘Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.’ The dog said: ‘That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?’ So God agreed. God created the monkey and said: ‘Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.’ The monkey said: ‘Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the Dog did?’ And God agreed. God created the cow and said: ‘You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.’ The cow said: ‘That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?’ And God agreed again. God created man and said: ‘Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.’ But man said: ‘Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?’ ‘Okay,’ said God, ‘You asked for it.’ So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you.

Since there was no one to look after her grandmother while she was away, she took the old lady with her. The Ideal Woman of the Early 1900s The pen-and-ink drawings of illustrator Charles Gibson came to represent the spirit of the early twentieth century in America. His illustrations, appearing in a number of popular magazines, both influenced and reflected attitudes, behaviors and more in this country. His drawings attracted instant recognition and admiration by the general public. The “Gibson Girl” became a model for fashion mimicked by women and admired by men, while the adventures of “Mr. Pipp” amused his audience and his satirical drawings provided social commentary. His drawings appeared in such popular magazines as Scribner’s, Harpers, Collier’s, and The Century. His images permeated popular culture, appearing in such non-print items as wallpaper, china plates, matchboxes and umbrella stands in much the same way that today’s popular icons grace T-shirts and sweat shirts. The “Gibson Girl” is probably the best remembered of the artist’s images. With her hair piled atop her head and a waist so tiny as to defy belief, the Gibson Girl represented a serene self-confidence that could surmount any problem. The envy of all who knew her, the Gibson Girl remained aloof of her surroundings but not to the extent of haughtiness. She was at once remote but yet accessible. The “Gibson Man,” equally as handsome and self-assured as the Gibson Girl, provided her perfect partner. The Gibson Girl and the Gibson Man in some ways represent the “Barbie and Ken” dolls of the early 1900s as icons of popular Culture. The coming of the First World War ended the public’s romance with Gibson’s images. The collective outlook changed from confident optimism to reserved cynicism - an outlook in which Gibson’s perspective seemed out of place. His popularity waned but there is no ignoring his influence on popular culture during the first decades of the twentieth century. HANDCRAFTED MARKERS AND MONUMENTS, Granite and Bronze. Large Selection of colors and designs, special orders welcome! 15 years experience, call Cornerstone Monument for appointment (775)267-1958 CHRISTMAS BEAR COLLECTIBLES, 1980’S JINGLE Bear and Jingle Bear Jr., $350 plus others, Susan (775)7907008

Call from the bank

Mr. Schwartz was the oldest of 7 children, so he had to quit school and work to help support his younger brothers and sisters. He never learned to read, so when he married and started a checking account, he signed his checks simply “XX”. Eventually he started his own business, which immediately prospered. He soon was a very rich man. One day, he got a call from his bank. “Mr. Schwartz,” said the banker, “I need to ask you about this check. We weren’t sure you had really signed it. All these years you’ve been signing your checks ‘XX’, but we just got one that was signed with three XXX’s...” Mr. Schwartz answered, “No problem, my friend. It’s just that since I’ve become so wealthy, my wife thought I ought to have a middle name.”

Blood Work

A man went to his doctor to go over his blood work results. As soon as he entered the doctor’s office, the doctor said to him, “I just looked at your results. You write your own story

In life, something that is very certain is that you write your own story. You are in charge of all the things you do and all the things others remember you by. This means that all of your actions will eventually write your story. It is important to know what you want your story to be, how you want you and others to perceive you during your life. Do you want to be known as a lazy person who has terrible habits? Or do you want to be known as a hard worker with a vision who works to turn this vision into reality? If your choice is to be known as the first, all you need to do is nothing. If your choice is to be known as the latter, you must show up, you must work hard, you must work yourself towards becoming a leader, you must create a better world, you must do all you can to turn that vision into reality every single day. You write your own story, it is up to you how others will tell it. Since just after World War II, the number of people employed in agriculture has dropped by half. Today, just 4% of U.S. farms produce 66% of farm products. Most of America’s farms are small and nearly all are family-run—but they’re also disappearing. In 1935, the number of farms peaked at almost 7 million. By 2007, that number had dropped to about 2.2 million farms. COVID-19 has put additional pressure on an already strained industry: In March 2020, farm bankruptcies jumped by 23%. Issues have included breakdowns in the supply chain and the closures of processing plants, wreaking havoc on farms around the country. To find out more about this complex and essential industry, Stacker compiled a gallery of 50 facts about U.S. farming. We’ve relied on authoritative sources that include the American Farm Bureau Federation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and industry and trade groups. In 1870, about half of all Americans had jobs in agriculture, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Today, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that farm workers comprise less than 1% of salary workers in the U.S. Nevertheless, production is still huge. U.S. farmers raise hundreds of millions of egg-laying hens, harvest millions of tons of fruits and vegetables, and keep the rest of the world supplied with corn, wheat, and soybeans. A single acre of land can grow 50,000 pounds of strawberries or 3,000 pounds of wheat, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation; and in 2018 alone, $139.6 billion worth of U.S. agricultural products were exported around the world. Despite demand, the average age of farmers continues to rise while income losses exacerbated by trade wars expand for farmers across the country. In Wisconsin, the state’s trademark family dairy farms may disappear altogether, according to October 2019 comments made by Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue. The end of the ham

A young woman was preparing a ham dinner. After she cut off the end of the ham, she placed it in a pan for baking. Her friend asked her, why did you cut off the end of the ham? And she replied, I really don’t know but my mother always did, so I thought you were supposed to. Later when talking to her mother she asked her why she cut off the end of the ham before baking it, and her mother replied, I really don’t know, but that’s the way my mom always did it. A few weeks later while visiting her grandmother, the young woman asked, Grandma, why is it that you cut off the end of a ham before you bake it? Her grandmother replied, Well dear, otherwise it would never fit into my baking pan. LADIES FAUX FUR VEST, BEAUTIFUL BLONDE color from Nordstrom, worn once, medium $75 (775)392-0044

Gardnerville Resident Embarks on “The 30-day Survival Challenge”

Imagine being on one of the most remote places on planet earth, a small tropical island with no food or water, no power, and no infrastructure of any kind, could you survive? This was the question that local resident Steve Noble wanted to answer. “With the right gear and a lot of ingenuity the answer is - yes - I believe I can survive and prosper”. For countless generations our ancestors were hunter gathers surviving from day to day. The rich bounty of food and resources were harvested from the land and the sea. The skills to survive were honed over many generations and passed down from parent to child for thousands of years. In our modern world, much of this knowledge has been lost. Today, if we are hungry, we simply open the refrigerator door and if we are thirsty, we turn on the faucet. How many of the skills necessary for survival do we still possess? Let’s find out… The entire 30-Day Survival Challenge was filmed in stunning 4k, on land, under the water, and in the air. The entire adventure is free and premiered on YouTube October 16th. Simply go to YouTube and search for “The 30-Day Survival Challenge – Steve Noble”. Steve Noble has lived in Gardnerville for the past 18 years. He is President of the Carson Valley Table Tennis Club, an avid pickleball player, and a professional photographer and cinematographer. “This is not my first survival adventure but it is by far my most ambitious”.

Played outside unsupervised all day -It seemed like mothers couldn’t wait to kick their kids out of the house in the morning so they could get on with their chores or socialize with friends. They called you in when dinner was ready and let you back out, telling you to come inside when the street lights come on. Becoming blood brothers and sisters. Kids would promise loyalty and friendship―or to keep a secret about something bad they did together―by making a small cut on their fingers and pressing them together. Spanking and Hitting - Back in the day, parents hit you because that’s what parents did when you angered them. It may have been just a smack on the head, or literally being put over dad’s knee for a spanking. Sometimes it was getting chased around the house and hit with a belt. Nuns Who Smacked - If you went to Catholic school, you were generally exposed to several discipline techniques. The classic was having a ruler smacked against your knuckles if you spoke out loud, rough-housed, or did not have your homework. Riding Bikes without Helmets - Since moms did not chauffeur kids around, you had to make an older sibling drive you places or you rode your bicycle. One of the first rites of passage was the day your father taught you to ride a bike. Parents expected you to fall and made you get back on and stop whining about scraped knees and elbows. Once you got the hang of it, you could leave the house and meet up with other kids on bikes and ride around together. Crummy Car Seats and Seat Belts - Little kids would sit in the passenger seat without a seatbelt. The “safety method” was this: Mom or Dad would fling an arm in front of you if they had to stop short. Going to a friend’s house unescorted - These days it takes a whole lot of planning to get a child to a play date (and a detective to check out if a location or home is safe). But back in the day, you just called out to Mom: “I’m going to so-and-so’s” and then walked to your friend’s house alone, or hopped on your bike. Closest pals lived in fairly close proximity and you did not have to have an appointment to see them. Hanging out in the candy stores - At local candy stores, you could go and, for pennies, buy all the sweets your mom didn’t allow you to eat at home. You could sneak it home in small paper bags. Sleeping in the back window of the car on road trips. Sending kids to bed without supper. Washing a kid’s mouth out with soap. Giving babies bourbon to help with teething pain. Hitchhiking - Hitching was a popular mode of transport and people didn’t worry about the kinds of scary things that have since made many give hitchhiking a thumbs down. HOME IN NEED OF IMPROVEMENT? Ever wonder why women out live men?

If you put a woman on a pedestal and try to protect her from the rat race, you’re a male chauvinist. If you stay home and do the housework, you’re a wimp. If you work too hard, there is never any time for her. If you don’t work enough, you’re a goodfor-nothing bum. If she has a boring repetitive job with low pay, this is exploitation. If you have a boring repetitive job with low pay, you should get off your backside and find something better. If you get a promotion ahead of her, that is favoritism. If she gets a job ahead of you, it’s equal opportunity. If you make a decision without consulting her, you’re a chauvinist. If she makes a decision without consulting you, she’s a liberated woman. If you ask her to do something she doesn’t enjoy, that’s domination. If she asks you, it’s a favor. If you like a woman to shave her legs and keep in shape, you’re sexist. If you don’t, you’re unromantic. If you try to keep yourself in shape, you’re vain. If you don’t, you’re a slob. If you buy her flowers, you’re after something. If you don’t, you’re not thoughtful. If you’re proud of your achievements, you’re up on yourself. If you don’t, you’re not ambitious. NO WONDER WOMEN OUTLAST MEN... Divorce

An elderly man in Miami calls his son in New York and says, “I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing. Forty-five years of misery is enough.” “Pop, what are you talking about?” the son screams. “We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the old man says. “We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her,” and he hangs up. Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone, “Like heck they’re getting divorced,” she shouts, “I’ll take care of this.” She calls her father immediately and screams at the old man, “You are NOT getting divorced! Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. “Okay,” he says, “They’re coming for Passover and paying their own airfares.” HISTORIC COLLECTOR ITEMS FROM BODIE, Aurora, Gardnerville, Genoa, etc (775)782-3893 CUSTOM SHIRTS, JACKETS, HATS, BAGS for your corporate event, fundraiser, family gathering, promotional event, etc. All sizes and varieties are available. by Karen Dustman It was a quiet Sunday evening in Genoa. Or at least, it started out that way. The date was April 16, 1882. The place: Al Livingston’s “first class” saloon on Main Street, Genoa. Jerry Raycraft was enjoying a companionable game of billiards with a friend. A barkeep named Stein was tending bar. And Jerry’s younger brother, Tom, was whiling away the time with a drink – an activity he’d been pursuing a little too long. Good-hearted and jovial when sober, young Tom Raycraft tended to be obnoxious when drunk. On this particular evening, tipsy Tom decided to insert himself in Jerry’s billiard game. To the barkeep’s dismay, a fight between the two brothers ensued. This wasn’t the first time that Jerry had had to school his younger brother, and eventually he managed to subdue the rambunctious young man. That disposed of, Jerry turned his wrath on Stein, the barkeep who’d kept serving Tom far too many drinks. Jerry vented his displeasure by punching Stein in the belly and walloping his ear. By now the commotion was attracting attention. Sheriff James T. Williams was pulled from his supper table to go quiet things down. With a deputy by his side, Williams arrived at the saloon and ordered the combatants to go home. That was just fine with Jerry. He helped his brother totter the short distance south to Raycraft’s Hotel. Mission accomplished, Jerry meandered back to the saloon, intending to resume his quiet game of billiards. But Sheriff Williams halted Jerry Raycraft at Livingston’s front door, threatening to arrest him if Jerry didn’t skeedaddle. Opinions were exchanged, including something along the lines of: “Who’s going to make me?!” Jerry reached in his pocket. And the Sheriff, thinking Jerry was pulling a gun, grabbed him by the wrist. It proved to be a large bowie knife rather than a gun in Jerry’s hand. Wrestling his arm free from the Sheriff’s grip, Jerry lunged upward, slicing Williams in the hand. And somehow during their struggle the knife found its way into the Sheriff’s back, near his spine. Badly injured, Williams drew his gun. Luckily for Jerry, a guardian angel suddenly appeared. Jerry’s older brother, Jack Raycraft, just happened to be serving as Williams’ deputy. Stepping between the two combatants, Jack took Jerry safely into custody and escorted him to the jail. “Had the would-be assassin not been promptly locked up by his brother, it is not unlikely that he would have been summarily dealt with,” the Carson Daily Appeal dryly observed. The knife wound proved to be a serious one, penetrating four inches deep in Williams’ back. For a time, the Sheriff’s prospects looked grim. He eventually rallied, however. That was more good news for Jerry Raycraft; the Grand Jury was able to indict him only for “Assault With Intent to Kill,” not murder. Jerry’s bond was initially set at $10,000, which was later reduced to $5,000. Thanks to Henry Van Sickle, E.D. Sweeney of Carson City, and Jerry’s own father, Joseph Raycraft, all of whom stepped up as bondsmen, Jerry was soon sprung from jail. The Raycrafts, owners of the well-known Raycraft Hotel and Livery Stable in Genoa, were an extremely prominent local family. Finding twelve disinterested jurors to serve at Jerry’s trial turned out to be more than a little problematic. Panel after

panel of potential jurors was called and excused. The trial date, originally set for July 31, got continued to August 14, and there were rumors it might have to be moved to Ormsby County to procure a jury. But, after sifting through almost 400 potential jurors and getting down to the last batch of 30 possibilities, a jury of twelve was finally successfully seated. 1. This moment is your life. Your life is not between the moments of your birth and death. Your life is between now and your next breath. The present – the here and now – is all the life you ever get. So live each moment in full, in kindness and peace, without fear and regret. And do the best you can with what you have in this moment; because that is all you can ever expect of anyone, including yourself. 2. A lifetime isn’t very long. This is your life, and you’ve got to fight for it. Fight for what’s right. Fight for what you believe in. Fight for what’s important to you-what adds value to your life, what makes you a better person. Fight for the people you love, and never forget to tell them how much they mean to you. Realize that right now you’re lucky because you still have a chance. So stop for a moment and think. Whatever you still need to do, start doing it today; don’t procrastinate. There are only so many tomorrows. Every moment that passes you will never get it back. Therefore make the best use of it. 3. The sacrifices you make today will pay dividends in the future. When it comes to working hard to achieve a dream – earning a degree, building a business, or any other personal achievement that takes time and commitment – one thing you have to ask yourself is: “Am I willing to live a few years of my life like many people won’t, so I can spend the rest of my life like many people can’t?” 4. You are your most important relationship. Happiness is when you feel good about yourself without feeling the need for anyone else’s approval. You must first have a healthy relationship with yourself before you can have a healthy relationship with others. You have to feel worthwhile and acceptable in your own eyes, so that you’ll be able to look confidently into the eyes of the people around you and connect with them. 5. Behind every beautiful life, there has been some kind of pain. You trip and you fall, you make mistakes and you fail, but you stand strong through it all – you live and you learn. You’re human, not perfect. You’ve been wounded, not defeated. Think of what a priceless gift it is to grow through these experiences – to breathe, to think, to struggle, and to overcome challenges in the pursuit of the things you love. Yes, sometimes you will encounter heartache along the way, but that’s a small price to pay for immeasurable moments of love and joy. Which is why you must keep stepping forward even when it hurts, because you know the inner strength that has carried you this far can carry you the rest of the way. And of course, if you’re struggling with any of these points, know that you are not alone. A lot of people the world over are right there with you, working hard to feel better, think more clearly, and live a life free of headaches and heartache. You can always do better. The Consumption of Alcohol

The consumption of alcohol may make you think you are whispering when you are not. The consumption of alcohol is a major factor in dancing like an idiot. The consumption of alcohol may cause you to tell your friends over and over again that you love them. The consumption of alcohol may cause you to think you can sing. The consumption of alcohol may lead you to believe that ex-lovers are really dying for you to telephone them at four in the morning. The consumption of alcohol may make you think you can logically converse with members of the opposite sex without spitting. The consumption of alcohol may make you think you have mystical Kung Fu powers, resulting in you getting your butt kicked. The consumption of alcohol may cause you to roll over in the morning and see something really scary. The consumption of alcohol may create the illusion that you are tougher, smarter, faster and better looking than most people. The consumption of alcohol may lead you to believe you are invisible. The consumption of alcohol may lead you to think people are laughing WITH you.

Social Media is ruining everything

A typical day for me starts out with me turning off the alarm on my smartphone and immediately taking the opportunity to check all my texts, instant messages, emails, status updates... you get the picture. Every like, every personal message, every post on my feed is a dopamine rush — all the fun of interacting with friends without having to actually, you know, be anywhere near them. That’s how I start my day, and from there it doesn’t get a lot better. Waiting for a bus — check Facebook. Riding the bus up to campus — I wonder what’s on Reddit? Going to the beach — time to send everyone I know a Snapchat! I know I’m not alone in this. The vast majority of my generation and others is hooked up to a great big internet advertising machine, designed to keep us tethered to it as much as possible. It’s like we each carry around our addiction every day in our pockets, our own little junkie kit. Android, iOS, Windows — it’s all the same, really; we’re all hooked into our own little world of which we are the sole curator. I know it’s a tired cliché at this point, but the truth is, we’re so involved in “connecting” that we seem to neglect really connecting — and while it’s all digital and intangible, it has far-reaching, pervasive effects in the real world (that’s the stuff you see when you put your phone away). Truth is, I think social media is ruining pretty much everything. I don’t remember it ever existing, but I’d like to believe that there was a time when people relished in open, civil discourse. A time when people discussed ideas with relish, and people on either side of the discussion, regardless of what it was about, treated each other with the respect we deserve as humans. I want to believe this is the case because I believe in the best part of human nature: our ability to band together as equals, regardless of our petty differences, united by the fact that we’re all impossibly unlikely creatures, living together on this tiny little speck of dust in a sunbeam, surrounded by an inhospitable void that extends for eternity, and all we really have is each other. You wouldn’t know that we were capable of that if you only knew us through the internet, though. Vitriol pours forth from the internet like that elevator scene in The Shining. We all judge each other’s self worth based on the tiny fractions of our personality that we show to the online world, and we shame each other over the most petty of perceived missteps. We feel we have the freedom to say the things we could never say in real life, because it feels safer behind a screen. We remove the people we dis-

22

agree with from our online lives, as if ignoring them will make them go away - when really, all we’re doing is saving ourselves from the important, painful, challenging task of questioning our beliefs, and admitting to ourselves our own wrongness. We’re becoming worse people; less rounded, more self-righteous, less understanding, more angry. The worst part is, we’re doing it to ourselves; Facebook and Twitter may have given us the tools, but in the crazy Lord of the Flies world we live in, they’re just the island. Studies have shown definitively that increased time spent on social media is correlated with higher rates of depression, yet we still live an ever-increasing segment of our lives online. Each of us is becoming more and more responsible for our own faults, and less and less willing to change them. But our social heroin addictions don’t just feed our basest instincts — they distract us from our finest moments, too. I can’t recount how many times I’ve gone to a concert and seen multitudes of people holding up their phones, shooting video to send to their friends. You’re probably guilty of it yourself — I certainly am. As if our lives are all so important that everyone else needs to see exactly how much fun we’re having. Do we really need video and photographic evidence that we were there, at that moment in time? Aren’t our own memories good enough? How can you say you saw something amazing if you only ever saw it through your phone camera? (No, yes, and you can’t.) If there was one thing I would say to everyone, it would be this: stop worrying about documenting your life and start living in it. WHY?

Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack? Why do we sing “Take me out to the ball game,” when we are already there? Why do your feet smell and your nose runs? Why do you need an appointment to see a psychic...shouldn’t they already know you’re coming? Why does it take 15 minutes to cook minute rice? Why don’t they just use fattest man in the world for a hockey goalie? Why don’t you ever see the headline “Psychic Wins Lottery”? Why is it called a “building” when it is already built? Dogs everywhere

An exhausted looking blond dragged himself in to the doctor’s office. “Doctor, there are dogs all over my neighborhood. They bark all day and all night, and I can’t get a wink of sleep.” “I have good news for you,” the doctor answered, rummaging through a drawer full of sample medications. “Here are some new sleeping pills that work like a dream. A few of these and your trouble will be over.” “Great,” the blond answered, “I’ll try anything. Let’s give it a shot.” A few weeks later the blond returned, looking worse than ever. “Doc, your plan is no good. I’m more tired than before!” “I don’t understand how that could be”, said the doctor, shaking his head. “Those are the strongest pills on the market!” “That may be true,” answered the blond wearily, “but I’m still up all night chasing those dogs and when I finally catch one it’s hard getting him to swallow the pill!” ALLERGIES AND DUST A PROBLEM? What causes a dog to twitch while they sleep?

According to researchers and vets, dogs twitch in their sleep because they are dreaming, hence a normal behavior that you probably shouldn’t be worried about if you currently are. Like us, our dogs have a sleep cycle. They go through three sleep stages comprising the NREM: Non-Rapid Eye Movement, REM: Rapid Eye Movement, and the SWS: Short Wave Sleep During the REM stage, sleep is typically deeper, and when your dog gets to this stage, it is starting to dream. These experts believe that during this stage of sleep, your dog acts on his dreams by moving or twitching all of his paws just like he would if he was chasing a little cat or rabbit. Dogs dream more frequently than most pets, and if you own an average-sized dog, he may dream about every 20 minutes with each dream lasting about a minute. You can tell your dog’s dreams have begun when you notice his breathing becomes irregular. You’ll also notice his eyes moving behind the closed lids. While a large dog will be in a dream state about every 45 minutes and each dream lasting up to 4 minutes, a Boston terrier may dream every ten minutes with each dream usually lasting less than 30 seconds. In this dream state, your dog may twitch or quiver.

Potty Trained

While carpenters were working outside the old house I had just bought, I busied myself with indoor cleaning. I had just finished washing the floor when one of the workmen asked to use the bathroom. With dismay I looked from his muddy boots to my newly scrubbed floors. Just a minute, I said, thinking of a quick solution. I’ll put down newspapers. That’s all right, lady, he responded. I’m already trained.

In high school, two boys, two friends (one Spanish and one American), were talking about the grades they received in their classes. American boy: “You got a ‘D’ in Spanish! How could that happen? I talked with a man today, an 80+ year old man. I asked him if there was anything I can get him while this Coronavirus scare was gripping America. He simply smiled, looked away and said: “Let me tell you what I need! I need to believe, at some point, this country my generation fought for... I need to believe in this nation we passed safely to our children and their children...I need to know this generation will quit being a bunch of sissies...that they respect what they’ve been given...that they’ve earned what others sacrificed for.” I wasn’t sure where the conversation was going or if it was going anywhere at all. So, I sat there, quietly observing. “You know, I was a little boy during WWII. Those were scary days. We didn’t know if we were going to be speaking English, German or Japanese at the end of the war. There was no certainty, no guarantees like Americans enjoy today. And no home went without sacrifice or loss. Every house, up and down every street, had someone in harm’s way. Maybe their Daddy was a soldier, maybe their son was a sailor, maybe it was an uncle. Sometimes it was the whole damn family...fathers, sons, uncles... Having someone, you love, sent off to war...it wasn’t less frightening than it is today. It was scary as Hell. If anything, it was more frightening. We didn’t have battle front news. We didn’t have email or cell phones. You sent them away and you hoped...you prayed. You may not hear from them for months, if ever. Sometimes a mother was getting her son’s letters the same day Dad was comforting her over their child’s death. And we sacrificed. You couldn’t buy things. Everything was rationed. You were only allowed so much milk per month, only so much bread, toilet paper. EVERYTHING was restricted for the war effort. And what you weren’t using, what you didn’t need, things you threw away, they were saved and sorted for the war effort. My generation was the original recycling movement in America. And we had viruses back then...serious viruses. Things like polio, measles, and such. It was nothing to walk to school and pass a house or two that was quarantined. We didn’t shut down our schools. We didn’t shut down our cities. We carried on, without masks, without hand sanitizer. And do you know what? We persevered. We overcame. We didn’t attack our President, we came together. We rallied around the flag for the war. Thick or thin, we were in it to win. And we would lose more boys in an hour of combat than we lose in entire wars today.” He slowly looked away again. Maybe I saw a small tear in the corner of his eye. Then he continued: “So many of today’s kids don’t know sacrifice. They think a sacrifice is not having coverage on their phone while they freely drive across the country. So many of today’s kids are selfish and spoiled. In my generation, we looked out for our elders. We helped out with single moms whose husbands were either at war or dead from war. Today’s rush the store, buying everything they can...no concern for anyone but themselves. It’s shameful the way Americans behave these days. None of them deserve the sacrifices their granddads made. So, no I don’t need anything. I appreciate your offer but, I know I’ve been through worse things than this virus. But maybe I should be asking you, what can I do to help you? Do you have

enough pop to get through this, enough steak? Will you be able to survive with 113 channels on your TV?” I smiled, fighting back a tear of my own...now humbled by a man in his 80’s. All I could do was thank him for the history lesson, leave my number for emergency and leave with my ego firmly tucked in my rear. I talked to a man today. A real man. An American man from an era long gone and forgotten. We will never understand the sacrifices. We will never fully earn their sacrifices. But we should work harder to learn about them...learn from them...to respect them. (author unknown) 1986 HORSE SLANT TRAILER WITH TACK ROOM $3,500 OBO (775)720-1627

Half full?

One day in philosophy class they spent a great deal of time debating whether the glass was half full or half empty. After the class, one student was feeling pretty good about himself and what he was learning at the university, so when he went home he tried to continue the discussion with his family. With maximum drama, he took a 12 ounce glass from the cupboard and poured in 6 ounces of water. Then took it into the dining room and placed it in the middle of the table. He proudly asked his family, “can anyone tell me whether this glass is half full or half empty?” Without missing a beat, his grandmother replied, “Depends if you’re drinking or pouring.” PAINTING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, STAINING, cabinets and fine finishes, free estimates, Powers Painting, NV#68615, (775)781-5531 or (775)450-2061 NEVER USED MAGNUM XR9 AIRLESS PAINT SPRAYER by Graco $525, For more information call (775)266-4005 HELP WANTED - LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE Crew Members, Please call Rodger (775)691-5966 FOR SALE: 2 ACRES+ CORNER LOT/LAND, POWER IN, Highland Dr. on Bolton Loop, Douglas County NV., 1 mile from Topaz Lake, Call for details (775)530-9317
