“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The 13 Folds of the American Flag
PMS in the Bible
This older couple was sitting around their apartment; she was clipping coupons while he was reading the bible. The old man said to his wife, “You know honey, everything you ever wanted to know about life is in here.” She returned, “Well, maybe not EVERYTHING, dear.” He replied back, “Sure, just name one thing I can’t find in here.” She said, “PMS-you won’t find anything about it in there.” He began flipping through the pages, going from one chapter to another, pausing for a few seconds only before going on to the next page. After about 10 minutes, he looked up at his wife and said, “Aha! Here it is, I told you everything was in here.” Then he proceeded to begin reading the script “... and Mary rode Joseph’s a$#...” SAVAGE MODEL 11 IN 6.5 CREEDMORE, 2017 MODEL, 3x9 Nikon scope, only shot a few times, broken in and sighted in, no background check or sales tax, a great deal at $380, Steve (530)409-2938 UPRIGHT GRAND PIANO, 1911, EXCELLENT Condition, Metronome included $400 (775)265-1441

Folding the American flag into a triangle gives unique honor and respect to the flag. Have you ever wondered what each of the 13 folds represents? The first fold is a symbol of life. The second fold is for our belief in eternal life. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing rank, who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. The fourth fold stands for our weaker nature; as American citizens trusting in God, it’s to Him we turn to in times of peace as well as war for his divine guidance. The fifth fold is a tribute to America. In the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong.” The sixth fold is where our heart lies. It’s with our flag that we pledge allegiance to the flag and the republic it stands for. The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces. For it is the armed forces that protect our country and flag against enemies, whether they be domestic or foreign. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for it is through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded. The tenth fold is a tribute to father, for He has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost. When the flag is completely folded, which some consider the 13th fold; the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, “In God We Trust.” After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today. Share this all others who love the symbol of “Liberty and Freedom.”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” America’s First Highway
America’s first highway, the historic National Road, is a tribute to small town life and a tapestry of different eras. Settlers heading west in wagon trains in the early 1800s were often stuck on muddy, rutted mountain roads or inching along barely negotiable trails even across the flatlands. Thomas Jefferson put surveyors to work in 1806 to chart the course of a national road. Construction began in Cumberland, MD in 1811 and work had progressed to Wheeling, West Virginia by 1818. Through six states, this project encouraged settlement and exploration. Towns sprouted up along the road, which became “Main Street” and a center of small town activity. The steam engine led to the death of the road. Train travel became so popular for long distances that more roads were not needed. Work stopped in 1852, in Vandalia, Illinois, and the brick road fell into disrepair. Sections are still visible, but farmers sometimes dug up the bricks and planted crops where the roadbed cut through their fields. The invention of the bicycle in the 1880s revived an interest in the National Road. The American Wheelmen lobbied to have better paths for their big-wheeled bicycles. continued....

Then came the automobile, and the resulting car culture with motels and diners. In no time, Americans wanted to drive everywhere and faster. When the interstate highway system took shape in the ’50s, ninety percent of the traffic left the old road. Traveling along the road today you may find fruit and vegetable stands, a reminder of a time when wagons loaded with much needed commodities crowded the road in the 1800s. Stagecoach inns now serve as wedding chapels and the old buildings seem to draw those who don’t want to forget local history. Many generations have been shaped by the westward migration. The ancestors of one Centerville, Indiana farm family were headed west long ago in a covered wagon when a wheel broke and it took three weeks for materials to arrive to make the repairs. In the mean time they looked around Centerville and decided it wasn’t such a bad place to stop. Four generations later, the family is farming the same land. Stone bridges spanning 80 feet still stand as architectural marvels of the time. Today, wagons rattle along during reenactments of the period, but these “settlers” stop for hot coffee at McDonalds. The road and the communities along it are still in flux. Some towns continue to decline. Others, also isolated
by their distance from interstate highways and suburban sprawl, now reap the benefits of having the opportunity to preserve and revive old churches and other historic buildings. The Soldier stood and faced God which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass. “Step forward now, you Soldier, how shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?” The Soldier squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t, because those of us who carry guns can’t always be a saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays and at times my talk was tough, and sometimes I’ve been violent, because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep… Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got just too steep, And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear, and sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fears. If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, it needn’t be so grand, I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand.” There was a silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod as the Soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God, “Step forward now, you Soldier, you’ve borne your burdens well, walk peacefully on

When you’re living a distracted life, every minute must be accounted for. You feel like you must be checking something off the list, staring at a screen, or rushing off to the next destination. And no matter how many ways you divide your time and attention, no matter how many duties you try and multi-task, there’s never enough time in a day to ever catch up. That was my life for two frantic years. My thoughts and actions were controlled by electronic notifications, ring tones, and jam-packed agendas. And although every fiber of my inner drill sergeant wanted to be on time to every activity on my overcommitted schedule, I wasn’t. You see, six years ago I was blessed with a laid-back, carefree, stop-and-smell-the roses type of child. When I needed to be out the door, she was taking her sweet time picking out a purse and a glittery crown. When I needed to be somewhere five minutes ago, she insisted on buckling her stuffed animal into a car seat. When I needed to grab a quick lunch at Subway, she’d stop to speak to the elderly woman who looked like her grandma. When I had thirty minutes to get in a run, she wanted me to stop the stroller and pet every dog we passed. When I had a full agenda that started at 6 a.m., she asked to crack the eggs and stir them ever so gently. My carefree child was a gift to my Type A, task-driven nature - but I didn’t see it. Oh no, when you live life distracted, you have tunnel vision - only looking ahead to what’s next on the agenda. And anything that cannot be checked off the list is a waste of time. Whenever my child caused me to deviate from my master schedule, I thought to myself, “We don’t have time for this.” Consequently, the two words I most commonly spoke to my little lover of life were: “Hurry up.” I started my sentences with it. “Hurry up, we’re gonna be late.” I ended sentences with it. “We’re going to miss everything if you don’t hurry up.” I started my day with it. “Hurry up and eat your breakfast. Hurry up and get dressed.” I ended my day with it. “Hurry up and brush your teeth. Hurry up and get in bed.” And although the words “hurry up” did little if nothing to increase my child’s speed, I said them anyway. Maybe even more than the words, “I love you.” The truth hurts, but the truth heals…and brings me closer to the parent I want to be. Then one fateful day, things changed. We’d just picked my older daughter up from kindergarten and were getting out of the car. Not going fast enough for her liking, my older daughter said to her little sister, “You are so slow.” And when she crossed her arms and let out an exasperat-

ed sigh, I saw myself—and it was a gut-wrenching sight. I was a bully who pushed and pressured and hurried a small child who simply wanted to enjoy life. My eyes were opened; I saw with clarity the damage my hurried existence was doing to both of my children. Although my voice trembled, I looked into my small child’s eyes and said, “I am so sorry I have been making you hurry. I love that you take your time, and I want to be more like you.” Both my daughters looked equally surprised by my painful admission, but my younger daughter’s face held the unmistakable glow of validation and acceptance. “I promise to be more patient from now on,” I said as I hugged my curly-haired child who was now beaming at her mother’s newfound promise. It was pretty easy to banish “hurry up” from my vocabulary. What was not so easy was acquiring the patience to wait on my leisurely child. To help us both, I began giving her a little more time to prepare if we had to go somewhere. And sometimes, even then, we were still late. Those were the times I assured myself that I will be late only for a few years, if that, while she is young. When my daughter and I took walks or went to the store, I allowed her to set the pace. And when she stopped to admire something, I would push thoughts of my agenda
out of my head and simply observe her. I witnessed expressions on her face that I’d never seen before. I studied dimples on her hands and the way her eyes crinkled up when she smiled. I saw the way other people responded to her stopping to take time to talk to them. I saw the way she spotted the interesting bugs and pretty flowers. She was a Noticer, and I quickly learned that ‘The Noticers’ of the world are rare and beautiful gifts. That’s when I finally realized she was a gift to my frenzied soul. My promise to slow down was made almost three years ago, at the same time I began my journey to let go of daily distraction and grasp what matters in life. Living at a slower pace still takes a concerted effort. But my younger daughter is my living reminder of why I must keep trying. In fact, the other day, she reminded me once again. The two of us had taken a bike ride to a snow cone shack while on vacation. After purchasing a cool treat for my daughter, she sat down at a picnic table delightedly admiring the icy tower she held in her hand. Suddenly a look of worry came across her face. “Do I have to rush, Mama?” I could have cried. Perhaps the scars of a hurried life don’t ever completely disappear, I thought sadly. As my child looked up at me waiting to know if she could take her time, I knew I had a choice. I could sit

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” thing—but when she got to the last bite, she held out a spoonful of ice crystals and sweet juice for me. “I saved the last bite for you, Mama,” my daughter said proudly. As I let the icy goodness quench my thirst, I realized I just got the deal of a lifetime. I gave my child a little time…and in return, she gave me her last bite and reminded me that things taste sweeter and love comes easier when you stop rushing through life. Whether it’s…Snow cone eating, Flower picking, Seatbelt buckling, Egg cracking, Seashell finding, Ladybug watching, Sidewalk strolling, I will not say, “We don’t have time for this.” Because that is basically saying, “We don’t have time to live.” Pausing to delight in the simple joys of everyday life is the only way to truly live. And so, we sat side-by-side talking about things that ukulele-playing-6-year-olds talk about. There were even moments when we sat in silence just smiling at each other and admiring the sights and sounds around us. I thought my child was going to eat the whole darn

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Building the Transcontinental Railroad
1900 Galveston Hurricane
On September 8, 1900, a Category 4 hurricane ripped through Galveston, Texas, killing an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 people. At the time of the 1900 hurricane, Galveston, nicknamed the Oleander City, was filled with vacationers. Sophisticated weather forecasting technology didn’t exist at the time, but the U.S. Weather Bureau issued warnings telling people to move to higher ground. However, these advisories were ignored by many vacationers and residents alike. A 15-foot storm surge flooded the city, which was then situated at less than 9 feet above sea level, and numerous homes and buildings were destroyed. The hurricane remains the worst weather-related disaster in U.S. history in terms of loss of life. God Bless America!
Along with the development of the atomic bomb, the digging of the Panama Canal, and landing the first men on the moon, the construction of a transcontinental railroad was one of the United States’ greatest technological achievements. Railroad track had to be laid over 2,000 miles of rugged terrain, including mountains of solid granite. Before the transcontinental railroad was completed, travel overland by stagecoach cost $1,000, took five or six months, and involved crossing rugged mountains and arid desert. The alternatives were to travel by sea around the tip of South America, a distance of 18,000 miles; or to cross the Isthmus of Panama, then travel north by ship to California. Each route took months and was dangerous and expensive. The transcontinental railroad would make it possible to complete the trip in five days at a cost of $150 for a first-class sleeper. The first spikes were driven in 1863, in the midst of the Civil War. Two companies competed to lay as much track as possible. The Central Pacific built east from Sacramento, California, while the Union Pacific built west from Omaha, Nebraska. The government gave the companies rights of way of 200 feet on each side of the track and financial aid of $16,000 to $48,000 for each mile of track laid. At first, the Union Pacific, which had flat terrain, raced ahead. The Central Pacific had to run train track through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Working three shifts around the clock, Chinese immigrants hand drilled holes into which they packed black powder and later nitroglycerine. The progress in the tunnels through the mountains was agonizingly slow, an average of a foot a day. Stung by the Union Pacific’s record of eight miles of track laid in a single day, the Central Pacific concocted a plan to lay 10 miles in a day. Eight Irish tracklayers put down 3,520 rails, while other workers laid 25,800 ties and drove 28,160 spikes in a single day. On May 10, 1869, at Promontory Summit, Utah, a golden spike was hammered into the final tie. The transcontinental railroad was built in six years almost entirely by hand. Workers drove spikes into mountains, filled the holes with black powder, and blasted through the rock inch by inch. Handcarts moved the drift from cuts to fills. Bridges, including one 700 feet long and 126 feet in the air, had to be constructed to ford streams. Thousands of workers, including Irish and German immigrants, former Union and Confederate soldiers, freed slaves, and especially Chinese immigrants played a part in the construction. Chinese laborers first went to work for the Central Pacific as it began crossing California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains in 1865. At one point, 8,000 of the 10,000 men toiling for the Central Pacific

were Chinese. At one point, Chinese workers were lowered in hand-woven reed baskets to drill blasting holes in the rock. They placed explosives in each hole, lit the fuses, and were, hopefully, pulled up before the powder was detonated. Explosions, freezing temperatures, and avalanches in the High Sierras killed hundreds. When Chinese workers struck for higher pay, a Central Pacific executive withheld their food supplies until they agreed to go back to work. The railroad had profound effects on American life. New phrases entered the American vocabulary such as “time’s up,” “time’s a wasting,” and “the train is leaving the station.” It also led to the division of the nation into four standard time zones. In addition, the railroads founded many of the towns on the Great Plains on land grants they were awarded by the federal government, and then sold the land to settlers. A teacher told her young class to ask their parents for a family story with a moral at the end of it, and to return the next day to tell their stories. In the classroom the next day, Joe gave his example first, “My dad is a farmer and we have chickens. One day we were taking lots of eggs to market in a basket on the front seat of the truck when we hit a big bump in the road; the basket fell off the seat and all the eggs broke. The moral of the story is not to put all your eggs in one basket.” “Very good,” said the teacher. Next, Mary said, “We are farmers too. We had twenty eggs waiting to hatch, but when they did we only got ten chicks. The moral of this story is not to count your chickens before they’re hatched.” “Very good,” said the teacher again, very pleased with the response so far. Next it was Barney’s turn to tell his story: “My dad told me this story about my Aunt Karen.... Aunt Karen was a flight engineer in the war and her plane got hit. She had to bail out over enemy territory and all she had was a bottle of whisky, a machine gun and a machete.” “Go on,” said the teacher, intrigued. “Aunt Karen drank the whisky on the way down to prepare herself; then she landed right in the middle of a hundred enemy soldiers. She killed seventy of them with the machine gun until she ran out of bullets. Then she killed twenty more with the machete till the blade broke. And then she killed the last ten with her bare hands.” “Good heavens,” said the horrified teacher, “What did your father say was the moral of that frightening story?” “Stay away from Aunt Karen when she’s been drinking...” INCOME TAX, GEORGE HALLIFAX, CPA, EA, TAX preparation, Federal and all States, prior years, audit representation, 30 years experience, reasonable rates (775)392-0418 HANDYMAN SERVICE – HOME REPAIRS, FENCING Repair/Replacement, Hauling, Trash Removal, Shrub and Tree Trimming and Removal, and Weed Removal, Free Estimates (775)781-1747 IS WINDOW CLEANING A PAIN? 41 YEARS EXPERIENCE, licensed and insured, Dave Adams Window Cleaning call for an over the phone price! “The science of perfection” (775)241-2318 RESIDENTIAL CLEANING, LICENSED, BONDED and insured with references, Free estimates, great cleaning, fair prices, Samantha (775)220-4252

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” My Wife Loved the Gift! Back By Popular Demand
A guy who purchased his lovely wife a pocket Taser for their anniversary submitted this: Last weekend I saw something at Larry’s Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife, Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/ purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....?? WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I’d get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave. Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn’t be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat, Gracie, looking on
Bubba
In Kentucky, you don’t see too many people hanggliding. Bubba decided to save up and get a hang-glider. He takes it to the highest mountain, and after struggling to the top, he gets ready to take flight. He takes off running and reaches the edge-into the wind he goes! Meanwhile, Maw and Paw Hicks were sittin’ on the porch swing talkin’ bout the good ole days when maw spots the biggest bird she ever seen! “Look at the size of that bird, Paw!” she exclaims. Paw raises up, “Git my gun, Maw.” She runs into the house, brings out his pump shotgun. He takes careful aim. BANG...BANG....BANG...BANG! The monster size bird continues to sail silently over the tree tops. “I think ya missed him, Paw,” she says. “Yeah,” he replies, “but at least he let go of Bubba!” 1927 HUDSON PROJECT, SUPER SIX, 4 DOOR sedan plus manuals, spare parts and lots of literature $5,995 (775)315-6487 JOB FAIRS! intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh and blood moving target. I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong? So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries. All the while I’m looking at this little device measuring about 5’ long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, ‘no possible way!’ What happened next is almost beyond description, but I’ll do my best...? I’m sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, ‘don’t do it, dimwit,’ reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn’t hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for the heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . . .HOLY TOLEDO . . . WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . . WHAT THE HECK!!! I’m pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs? The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room. Note: If you ever feel compelled to ‘mug’ yourself with a taser, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would be considered conservative? SON-OF-A-GUN, THAT HURT LIKE HECK!!! A minute or so later (I can’t be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent

Clocks in Heaven
A man died and arrived at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter greets him and says, “Welcome. Come walk with me and I’ll show you where you’ll be staying.” As they’re walking along the path he notices clocks on the Golden Fence of Heaven. He asks St. Peter, “What are all those clocks for?” St. Peter replies, “They have clocks for every person in the world. They click once for each time you lie.” By the time they reach where the man is staying, he asks out of curiosity, “I didn’t see any politicians clocks. Where are they kept?” St. Peter calmly replies, “People here use them as fans.” reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparently, I soiled myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I’m still looking for my nuts and I’m offering a significant reward for their safe return!! P.S. My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it! “If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid.” MIKES HORSESHOEING SERVICE, 30 + YEARS experience! Total Mayhem
Visit us at www.SierraScoop.com
One afternoon a man came home from work to find total mayhem in his house. His three children were outside, still in their P.J.’s, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers thrown all about the front yard. The door to his wife’s car was open, as was the front door to the house. Proceeding into the entry, he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, and a throw rug was wadded against one wall. In the front room the TV was blaring a cartoon channel, and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing. In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast food was spilled on the counter, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table, and a small pile of sand lay piled up by the back door. He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and other piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried that she might be ill, or worse!! He found her lounging into the bedroom, still in her pajamas, reading a novel. She smiled, looked up at him and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked, “What happened here today?” She again smiled and answered, “you know every day when you come home from work and ask me what in the world did I do today?” “Yes”, he replied reluctantly. She answered, “Well, today I didn’t do it!!” LOOKING FOR A WOMAN TO COME LIVE with me, age 50 to 60 years old, Caucasian/slender, if interested, please call Russ at (775)246-3379 PUBLISHER’S NOTICE: All real estate advertising in this paper is subject to the Fair Housing Act which makes it illegal to advertise “any preference, limitations or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin, or an intention to make any such preference, limitation or discrimination.” This magazine will not knowingly accept any advertisement for real estate which is a violation of the law; our readers are hereby informed that all dwellings advertised in this publication are available on an equal opportunity basis. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Military Funeral Customs and Traditions
As with the military itself, our armed forces’ final farewell to comrades is steeped in tradition and ceremony. Prominent in a military funeral is the flag-draped casket. The blue field of the flag is placed at the head of the casket, over the left shoulder of the deceased. The custom began in the Napoleonic Wars of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when a flag was used to cover the dead as they were taken from the battlefield on a caisson. During a military funeral the horses that pull the caisson which bears the body of the veteran are all saddled, but the horses on the left have riders, while the horses on the right do not. This custom evolved from the days when horse-drawn caissons were the primary means of moving artillery ammunition and cannon, and the riderless horses carried provisions. The single riderless horse that follows the caisson with boots reversed in the stirrups is called the “caparisoned horse” in reference to its ornamental coverings, which have a detailed protocol all to themselves. By tradition in military funeral honors, a caparisoned horse follows the casket of an Army or Marine Corps officer who was a colonel or above, or the casket of a president, by virtue of having been the nation’s military commander in chief. Abraham Lincoln, who was killed in 1865, was the first U.S. president to be honored with a caparisoned horse at his funeral.
Fat-Free
I stopped at a fast-food restaurant recently. I was fascinated by a sign which offered Fat-Free French Fries. I decided to give them a try. I was dismayed when the clerk pulled a basket of fries from the fryer, which was dripping with fat. He filled a bag with these fries and put them in my order. “Just a minute!” I said. “Those aren’t fat-free.” “Yes, they are. We only charge for the potatoes . . . the fat is free!” GREG’S SMALL ENGINE SERVICE AND REPAIR! The First Suit?
A little boy opened the big, old family Bible with fascination and looked at the old pages as he turned them. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages. “What have you got there, dear?” his mother asked. With astonishment in his voice, the young boy answered: “I think it’s Adam’s suit!” NEW ANDERSON 5TH WHEEL GOOSENECK hitch with chain hook tie downs $600 775-463-4492 BATH TUBS REPAIRED, RESURFACED, AND recolored, Acrylic, Fiberglass and Porcelain, Call The Tub Doctor (530)495-1641 or (775)233- 5297 HARRY’S HAULING; PIANOS, SPAS, SAFES OR anything else, serving the Carson Valley communities (775)291-6648 MULTI- PURPOSE FLATBED TRAILER, BED DIMENSIONS 13’Lx5½’W, great for ATV/OHV or construction, new tires and paint $1,199 OBO (775)7209273

What Do You Want for Our 40th Wedding Anniversary?
John asks his wife, Mary what she wants to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. “Would you like a new mink coat?” he asks. “Not really,” says Mary. “Well how about a new Mercedes sports car?” says John. “No,” she responds. “What about a new vacation home in the country?” he suggests. She again rejects his offer with a “No thanks.” “Well what would you like for our anniversary?” John asks. “John, I’d like a divorce,” answers Mary. “Sorry, I wasn’t planning to spend that much,” says John.
