“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”

Why it is Important to Say “Thank You”

You are polite. You say “please” and “thank you” even “excuse me.” You try not to be rude to people and you hold the door open for others. But why is it important and what is your reason for being polite? Are you looking for selfish gain? Some people are very polite not for others, but for selfish gain. For those people being polite is a “see how good I am” type of act. These people are typically polite to strangers and yet not with their own family. There are some people who act polite but only for some sort of reward or self-gratification. Who they will be polite to will depend on what they want, because they only want something for themselves. Is everyone selfish? Some people are polite because they were taught to be. There are people who are polite because it helps others. Then other people know a bit of kindness can change the day of another and sometimes even a life. How can “thank you” change a life? If you live a life of saying thank you with a smile or the words, then you could change the world. A simple smile can ripple around the city. Saying thank you with a heart of gratitude can change a life. By saying thank you and meaning it, you could change a very bad day into a day of joy. What is so powerful about an attitude of gratitude? By expressing your gratitude to someone who helped you, you are doing more than saying a basic thank you. You are sharing a bit of your heart. For the person receiving that gift from you,

4

they notice, even if nothing happens that day. Can “Thank You” change tomorrow? The bit of gratitude from the heart will weigh on the heart of the person gifted with it. One day they will question why your “thank you” was so different, why your attitude was so powerful. Once they realize why, a life will be changed. But what about my life? Look around at all the things in your life for which you should be thankful. Even if you think you have little to give thanks for, look at the clothes you are wearing, the people who care about you. You can reach out and say thanks to the people in your life, there is a power in the heartfelt words of gratitude. Should I say thanks over the small things? When you start to say thank you for the little things, bigger things have a way of appearing. It will not happen overnight. But by noticing the little things and giving thanks, you become more open to little steps that lead to bigger things. A BAD TILE JOB CAN BE LIKE A BAD HAIRCUT, but it doesn’t grow back, so don’t get hacked! Done right the first time, Sundance Tile and Marble, NV#58795 (775)6919954 CUSTOM MASONRY, ONE BRICK AT A TIME, Commercial/Residential, 3+ Better Business Bureau rating, serving Carson Valley 12+ years, Free Estimates, M Sqrd Masonry, NV#200616647 and CA#924187, Marc Duryee (775)450-6219 or (775)783-4753

1. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. 2. I walked one day on the street. I found something that had worth. You make sure you don’t lose it. It has a color, size and shape but every one is different. You touch it, enjoy it, like it, and always count it over. What am I? 3. The Smiths were a wealthy family. They lived in a large circular house. When Mr. Smith came back he noticed that his favorite jersey was ruined. He asked who did this. Mrs. Smith said I was washing the cloths. The daughter said I was drawing a picture. The son said I was playing basketball. The maid said I was dusting in the corners. Who ruined the jersey. 4. Two sentries were on duty outside a barracks. One faced up the road to watch for anyone approaching from the North. The other looked down the road to see if anyone approached from the South. Suddenly one of them said to the other, “Why are you smiling?” How did he know that his companion was smiling? Find the answers on a following page. 10 Reasons Why God Created Eve...

10. God worried that Adam would always be lost in the garden because he knew men would never ask directions. 9. God knew that Adam would one day need someone to hand him the TV remote because men don’t want to see what’s on television, they want to see WHAT ELSE is on television. 8. God knew that Adam would never buy a new fig leaf when the seat wore out and therefore would need Eve to get one for him. 7. God knew that Adam would never make a doctor’s appointment for himself. 6. God knew that Adam would never remember which night was garbage night. 5. God knew that if the world was to be populated there would have to be someone to bear children, because men would never be able to handle it. 4. As ‘Keeper of the Garden’ Adam would never remember where he put his tools. 3. The scripture account of creation indicates that Adam needed someone to blame his troubles on when God caught him hiding in the garden. 2. As the Bible says, ‘It is not good for man to be alone.’ He only ends up getting himself in trouble. And the #1 reason why God created Eve is... When God had finished the creation of Adam, He stepped back, scratched his head and said, ‘I KNOW I can do better than THIS!!’ 1984 YAMAHA SR540K SNOW MOBILE WITH matching sled, excellent condition, like new, 848 miles $500, Bridgeport (760)932-7678 C.F.I. The Perfect Relationship

If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him and never say it’s not quite as good as his mother’s then adopt a dog. If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour, for as long and wherever you want then adopt a dog. If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn’t care about football, and can sit next to you as you watch romantic movies then adopt a dog. If you want someone who is content to get on your bed just to warm your feet and whom you can push off if he snores then adopt a dog! If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn’t care if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin, young or old, who acts as if every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves you unconditionally, perpetually then adopt a dog... BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence is solely to ensure his happiness, then adopt a cat! Now be honest, you thought I was gonna say... Marry a man, didn’t you?

Texting and Driving? Watch Out for the Textalyzer

A textalyzer is a proposed device that would act as a breathalyzer for text messaging. The device has been promoted as a means of reducing distracted driving. The device would be used by police officers who suspect that a driver has been texting while driving using similar procedures currently in place for drivers suspected of driving under the influence. The device would be connected to the driver’s mobile phone and would scan the phone for calls, e-mails, or text messages sent when the driver would have been operating the vehicle. In 2016, legislation was introduced in the New York Senate to implement the use of textalyzers. Visit us at www.SierraScoop.com Thanksgiving Weather Forecast

In the pre-Thanksgiving rush, we have received an early weather report from our in-house weather reporters. This is one, you should be sure to email your Mom. Turkeys will thaw in the morning, then warm in the oven to an afternoon high near 190F. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or cold shoulder. During the late afternoon and evening, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey, causing an accumulation of one to two inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other. Please pass the gravy. A weight watch and indigestion warning have been issued for the entire area, with increased stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper off to leftovers, dropping to a low of 34F in the refrigerator. Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday, high pressure to eat sandwiches will be established. Flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50 percent chance of scattered soup late in the day. We expect a warming trend where soup develops. By early next week, eating pressure will be low as the only wish left will be the bone. How Are You?

I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice from the other stall saying: ‘Hi, how are you?’ I’m not the type to start a conversation in the men’s restroom, but I don’t know what got into me, so I answered, somewhat embarrassed, ‘Doin’ just fine.’ And the other guy says: ‘So what are you up to?’ What kind of question is that? At that point, I’m thinking this is too bizarre so I say: ‘Uhhh, I’m like you, just traveling.’ At this point I am just trying to get out as fast as I can when I hear another question. ‘Can I come over?’ Ok, this question is just too weird for me but I figured I could just be polite and end the conversation. I tell him, ‘No........I’m a little busy right now!!!’ Then I hear the guy say nervously... ‘Listen, I’ll have to call you back. There’s an idiot in the other stall who keeps answering all my questions.’

Fly Swatter

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter. “What are you doing?” She asked. “Hunting Flies.” He responded. “Oh! Are you killing any?” She asked. “Yep, 3 males, 2 females,” he replied. Intrigued, she asked ..... “How can you tell them apart?” He responded, “3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone.” LG REFRIGERATOR, BOTTOM FREEZER, 24.7 cubic feet, stainless steel $2,500; chest freezer, excellent condition $125; solid oak, nook style dining set $200; solid oak computer center $150; full size bed with mattress $120; solid oak entertainment center $130, Dayton (562)2088888

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” I Had It All!

This morning I was sitting on a park bench next to a homeless man. I started a conversation by asking him how he ended up this way. He said, “Up until last week, I still had it all. I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV and Internet, and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library. I was working on my MBA on-line. I had no bills and no debt. I even had full medical coverage.” I felt sorry for him, so I asked, “What happened? Drugs? Alcohol? Divorce?” “Oh no, nothing like that,” he said. “No, no. Don’t You Know Who I Am?

A few minutes before the church services started, the congregation was sitting in their pews and talking. Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church. Everyone started screaming and running for the back entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate. Soon the church was empty except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew without moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God’s ultimate enemy was in his presence. So Satan walked up to the man and said, ‘Do you know who I am?’ The man replied, ‘Yep, sure do.’ ‘Aren’t you afraid of me?’ Satan asked. ‘Nope, sure ain’t.’ said the man. ‘Don’t you realize I can kill you with one word?’ asked Satan. ‘Don’t doubt it for a minute, ‘ returned the old man, in an even tone. ‘Did you know that I can cause you profound, horrifying agony for all eternity?’ persisted Satan. ‘Yep,’ was the calm reply. ‘And you’re still not afraid?’ asked Satan. ‘Nope,’ said the old man. More than a little perturbed, Satan asked, ‘Why aren’t you afraid of me?’ The man calmly replied, ‘Been married to your sister for 48 years.’

Road Rage

An honest man was being tailgated by a stressed out woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman hit the roof, and the horn, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, “I’m very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the ‘Choose Life’ license plate holder, the ‘What Would Jesus Do’ bumper sticker, the ‘Follow Me to Sunday-School’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk. Naturally, I assumed you had stolen the car.” FISH TANK, 20 GALLON, SITS ON WOOD cabinet with all the stuff included and hexagon 1-gallon tank with all the stuff $50 for everything (775)265-6482 GET READY FOR YOUR CPA – SAVE THE LAST minute scramble and paying high fees to your CPA to pull your 2016 books together, call Pro-Balanced Bookkeeping at (775)246-3363 LET US UNLOAD ON YOU! Parenting with Purpose By Mary Jane Battista, Coleville, CA

Christmas is approximately 55 days away and let’s face it, most of us pause on Thanksgiving long enough to stuff ourselves more than the turkey we stuffed, say a quick “Thanks to God”, and jump directly into thoughts of Christmas shopping, decorating and the upcoming festivities of the season. If you will, focus on a few Christmas considerations for a moment. It may be helpful to decrease the season’s stress. Can we start with the subject of Jolly Old St. Nick, better known as Santa Claus? We sing about him and kids are vamboozled into believing the words, “he sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake, he knows when you’ve been bad or good so be good for goodness sake.” What is true about that? Instead consider the truth that “the Lord looks down from heaven, he sees all the children of man from where he sits enthroned. He looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes their deeds. Psalm 33:13-15 So why give Santa the credit God deserves? If you feel Santa is a must for your family’s Christmas traditions, might I suggest that parents “fess up” and let your kids know that this legend is pretend and fun. Tell them the story of the real St. Nick who had a gift of giving and dressed up because he did not want anyone to know who was giving the gifts to those who had need. Somehow when kids go to Disney they enjoy the magic of the moment but realize Mickey and Minnie are fun but not real! They will realize the

same about Santa. Another point I would like to make on behalf of your child’s safety. Would you allow your child to sit on the lap of a complete stranger if he was not dressed up in a Santa Suit? “Just sayin”! Moving on to decorating. In Jeremiah chapter 10 of your Bible it describes what sounds to me like the tradition of putting up a Christmas tree. By reading this you could possibly interpret that putting up a Christmas tree is a form of idol worship. If Christ is not part of your Christmas celebration and the tree is your only focus that could be true. However, through the years our family has used decorating the Christmas tree as a time to spend together, making ornaments and having family time together. It has been a great time to remember each year the times and places the ornaments came from. Even now, my kids are grown but we still enjoy making ornaments and memories with our grandkids and as we decorate our tree every year we remember the Lord’s goodness to us. Time spent decorating could also be used as a time to get back to the basics of Christmas by focusing on the account in Matthew’s gospel. While you decorate, make known to your children God’s clear and concise intent for everyone to embrace no matter the season. “An angel of the Lord came to Joseph and said, “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son and you shall call his Name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. All this had taken place to fulfill what the prophet of the Lord had spoken saying, “behold

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Just the Thing!

A man enters a barber shop for a shave. While the barber is foaming him up, he mentions the issues he has had getting a close shave around the cheeks. “I have just the thing,” says the barber taking a small wooden ball from a nearby drawer. “Just place this between your cheek and gum.” The man places the ball in his mouth and the barber proceeds with the closest shave the man has ever experienced. After a few strokes the client asks in garbled speech. “What happens if I swallow it?” “No problem,” says the barber. “Just bring it back tomorrow like everyone else does.” GOT DIRTY WINDOWS? the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and He shall be called Immanuel which means God with us.” Matt 1:20-23 Quoting the words of Linus, “That’s what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown..” And now the shopping! It is probably the most stressful part of the season! We often feel pressured to buy gifts galore, spending more than we have. Take a deep breath and de-stress a bit with some advice I found on buzzheads.com. It is entitled The Four Christmas Gift Challenge. 1. Buy something they want. 2. Buy something they need. 3. Something to wear 4. Something to Read. My goal is to stick to this challenge and to buy less extravagant and less expensive gifts. How about you? Simplify and I can guarantee your family will be more likely to shine like the star of Bethlehem, sing like the heavenly angels and actually be able to rejoice in Christ’s birth. As I was driving home from work one day, I stopped to watch a local Little League baseball game that was being played in a park near my home. As I sat down behind the bench on the first-base line, I asked one of the boys what the score was. “We’re behind 14 to nothing,” he answered with a smile. “Really,” I said. “I have to say you don’t look very discouraged.” “Discouraged?” the boy asked with a puzzled look on his face. “Why should we be discouraged? We haven’t been up to bat yet.”

A man was sprawled across three entire seats in a theater. When the usher came by and noticed this, he whispered to the man, “Sorry sir, but you’re only allowed one seat.” The man groaned but didn’t budge. The usher became impatient. “Sir,” the usher said, “if you don’t get up from there, I’m going to have to call the manager.” Again, the man just groaned, which infuriated the usher who turned and marched briskly back up the aisle in search of his manager. In a few moments, both the usher and the manager returned and stood over the man. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move him, but with no success. Finally, they summoned the police. The cop surveyed the situation briefly. “All right, buddy. What’s your name?” “Sam,” the man moaned. “Where ya from, Sam?” the cop asked. “The balcony.” MKD CONSTRUCTION, GENERAL ENGINEERING, concrete structures, concrete flat work, grading, roadway improvements, drainage, storm drains, underground utilities (water and sewer), paving, fencing, barrier rail, environmental improvements, Commercial and Residential Snow Removal, Excellent Reputation and References Available, NV#50061 and CA#818376, Mike (775)2461900 or (775)315-2416 ALLERGIES AND DUST A PROBLEM? A fire started on some grasslands near a farm. The county fire department was called to put out the fire. The fire was more than the county fire department could handle. Someone suggested that a nearby volunteer bunch be called. Despite some doubt that the volunteer outfit would be of any assistance, the call was made. The volunteers arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They rumbled straight towards the fire, drove right into the middle of the flames and stopped! The firemen jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions. Soon they had snuffed out the center of the fire, breaking the blaze into two easily-controlled parts. Watching all this, the farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire department’s work and was so grateful that his farm had been spared, that right there on the spot he presented the volunteers with a check for $1,000. A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain what the department planned to do with the funds. “That ought to be obvious,” he responded, wiping ashes off his coat. “The first thing we’re gonna do is get the brakes fixed on our fire truck!” REDUCE YOUR ENERGY COST! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Daily Visitor

There was a woman who was a daily visitor to the local coffee shop, coming in every day to order breakfast. She seemed to be over 80 years old, and was a quiet, tranquil person who minded her own business. At first, the servers thought that she was coming in alone. Finally, though, they noticed that she brought a picture in every day and set it up on the table facing her while she ate. There was a man in the photo – her late husband. She was still bringing him along to have breakfast together, just like they’d probably shared breakfast for many decades before he passed on. It was the most moving display of love and devotion that the servers had seen in a long time. It really touched their hearts deeply – and we’re sure it’ll touch yours, too. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Horoscope Humor...

How many members of your sign does it take to change a light bulb? Aries: Just one. You want to make something of it? Taurus: One, but just try to convince them that the burnedout bulb is useless and should be thrown away. Gemini: Two, but the job never gets done-they just keep discussing who is supposed to do it and how it’s supposed to be done! Cancer: Just one. But it takes a therapist three years to help them through the grieving process. Leo: Leos don’t change light bulbs, although sometimes their agent will get a Virgo in to do the job for them while they’re out. Virgo: Approximately 1.000000 with an error of +/- 1 millionth. Libra: ER, two. Or maybe one. No, on second thought, make that two. Is that OK with you? Scorpio: That information is strictly secret and shared only with the Enlightened Ones in the Star Chamber of the Ancient Hierarchical Order. Sagittarius: The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned- out light bulb? Capricorn: I don’t waste my time with these childish jokes. Aquarius: Well, you have to remember that everything is energy, so.... Pisces: Light bulb? What light bulb?

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” If a Dog Were Your Teacher

These are some of the lessons you might learn... When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy. When it’s in your best interest practice obedience. Let others know when they’ve invaded your territory. Take naps and stretch before rising. Run romp and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting, when a simple growl will do. On warm days stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree. When you’re happy dance around and wag your entire body. No matter how often you’re scolded don’t buy into the guilt thing and pout.Run right back and make friends. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough. Be loyal Never pretend to be something you’re not. If what you want lies buried dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent ........sit close by ...and nuzzle them gently. CUSTOM CANVAS WORK! Out of the Mouths of Babes

Nudity - I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, “Mom! That lady isn’t wearing a seat belt!” Honesty - My son Zachary, 4, came screaming out of the bathroom to tell me he’d dropped his toothbrush in the toilet. So I fished it out and threw it in the garbage. Zachary stood there thinking for a moment, then ran to my bathroom and came out with my toothbrush. He held it up and said with a charming little smile, “We better throw this one out too then, ‘cause it fell in the toilet a few days ago.” Ketchup - A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup to come out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. “It’s the minister, Mommy,” the child said to her mother. Then she added, “Mommy can’t come to the phone to talk to you right now. She’s hitting the bottle.” More Nudity - A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women’s locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, “What’s the matter haven’t you ever seen a little boy before?” Elderly - While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. The various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs, unfailingly intrigued her. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, “The tooth fairy will never believe this!” Dress-Up - A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, “Daddy, you shouldn’t wear that suit.” “And why not, darling?” “You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.” School - A little girl had just finished her first week of school. “I’m just wasting my time,” she said to her mother. “I can’t read, I can’t write and they won’t let me talk!” Bible - A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. “Mama, look what I found”, the boy called out.” What have you got there, dear?” With astonishment in the young boy’s voice, he answered, “I think it’s Adam’s underwear.” HIGH DESERT BARNS, CUSTOM STEEL BUILDINGS, Horse Shelters, Quality Barns built with 25 years of experience, highdesertbarns.com or (775)246-3004

In the Offering

One Sunday a pastor told the congregation that the church needed some extra money and asked the people to prayerfully consider giving a little extra in the offering plate. He said that whoever gave the most would be able to pick out three hymns. After the offering plates were passed, the pastor glanced down and noticed that someone had placed a $1,000 bill in offering. He was so excited that he immediately shared his joy with his congregation and said he’d like to personally thank the person who placed the money in the plate. A very quiet, elderly and saintly lady all the way in the back shyly raised her hand. The pastor asked her to come to the front. Slowly she made her way to the pastor. He told her how wonderful it was that she gave so much and in thanksgiving asked her to pick out three hymns. Her eyes brightened as she looked over the congregation, pointed to the three handsomest men in the building and said, “I’ll take him and him and him.” MAYTAG DRYER, CONVERTED TO LP, GOOD condition $50, Yerington (775)463-2351

Glittery Fruits Craft for Kids

You will need: Ribbon, Kitchen foil, Tissue paper scraps in yellow, green and red, PVA glue, and Glitter. Instructions: Tie a knot in your ribbon so it forms a loop. You need to make this loop longer than you want your finished “fruit” to be so there will be enough at the top to hang it. Rip off some foil and shape it around the ribbon so the knot sits at the bottom and there is a loop at the top. Shape the foil into an apple or pear shape, squeezing it tightly. It might take a little while to get a shape that you are happy with. Dip scraps of the appropriately colored tissue paper in the glue and use them to cover your fruit. When your fruit is completely covered sprinkle with glitter. Hang your fruit up or place carefully in a bowl to display.
