Mothers Love

“Is this the long way?” asked the young mother as she set her foot on the path of life. And the Guide said: “Yes, and the way is hard, and you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning.” The young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children, she fed them and bathed them, taught them how to tie their shoes and ride a bike, and reminded them to feed the dog and do their homework and brush their teeth. The sun shone on them and the young mother cried, “Nothing will ever be lovelier than this.” Then the nights came, and the storms, and the path was sometimes dark, and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her arms. The children said, “Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come.” And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary. But at all times she said to the children, “A little patience and we are there.” So the children climbed and as they climbed they learned to weather the storms. And with this, she gave them strength to face the world. Year after year she showed them compassion, understanding, hope, but most of all un-

conditional love. And when they reached the top they said, “Mother, we could not have done it without you.” The days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years. The mother grew old and she became little and bent. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage. And the mother, when she lay down at night, looked up at the stars and said: “This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned so much and are now passing these traits on to their children.” And when the way became rough for her, they lifted her, and gave her strength, just as she had given them hers. One day they came to a hill, and beyond the hill they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And Mother said, “I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk with dignity and pride, with their heads held high, and so can their children after them.” And the children said, “You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates.” And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. And they said, “We cannot see her, but she is with us still.” A mother is more than a memory. She is a living presence. Your Mother is always with you. She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she’s the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick and perfume that she wore, Cont....

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. Osteoporosis and low bone mass can be a serious and disabling disease affecting over 50 million Americans. Since bone loss occurs without symptoms, a person may not know they have osteoporosis until their bones become so weak that a sudden strain, bump or fall causes a fracture. Bone loss can occur with lower estrogen levels, use of steroids, prolonged immobilization periods, or deficiencies in vitamin D, calcium and magnesium. Several risk factors can potentially lower bone mass and result in higher risk for fracture including gender, postmenopausal, family history, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, digestive disorders, alcohol use, smoking, antidepressants, steroids, and inadequate sunlight. Dietary factors such as high caffeine, high phosphorus intake in sodas, high animal protein, high sodium and low calcium are also high risk indicators. Bone rebuilding is essential with many ways to support that process. One of the best dietary preventative habits is to eat more vegetables, particularly the dark leafy green vegetables like kale, collard greens, spinach, Swiss chard, and Romaine lettuce. They are rich sources of vitamins and minerals like calcium, magnesium, Vitamin K, Vitamin B and boron. Exercise is another essential part to preventing bone loss. Physical and weight bearing exercises of appropriate intensity and duration will increase bone formation. If somebody is more sedentary or if they are immobilized, it can lead to significant bone loss. Don’t be a victim of this ‘silent disease,’ make bone health one of your top priorities. 3 Envelopes

Sometime after Sidney died, his widow, Tillie, was finally able to speak about what a thoughtful and wonderful man her late husband had been. “Sidney thought of everything,” she told them. “Just before he died, Sidney called me to his bedside. He handed me three envelopes. `Tillie,’ he told me, ‘I have put all my last wishes in these three envelopes. After I am gone, please open them and do exactly as I have instructed. Then I can rest in peace’.” “What was in the envelopes?” her friends asked. “The first envelope contained $5,000 with a note, ‘Please use this money to buy a nice casket.’ So, I bought a beautiful mahogany casket with such a comfortable lining that I know Sidney is resting very comfortably. “The second envelope contained $10,000 with a note, ‘Please use this for a nice funeral.’ I arranged Sidney a very dignified funeral and bought all his favorite foods for everyone attending.” “And the third envelope?” asked her friends. “The third envelope contained $25,000 with a note, ‘Please use this to buy a nice stone.’ Holding her hand in the air and showing off her ten-carat diamond ring., Tillie said, “So, do you like my stone?” MINOR TO MAJOR AUTOMOTIVE REPAIRS, Tires and More! Samuel Chapin’s stately 15-room house at 311 South “C” Street was built in 1862, during Virginia City’s mining heyday, possibly as his private residence. But despite Samuel Chapin’s extensive mining interests, all was not sweetness and light in later years. In 1869, Ahnarin B. Paul wrote Alpine County mining promoter O.F. Thornton: “I saw Chapin to-day — he can’t get the [ore-processing] settler to produce the electricity which must be had for precipitating the mercury.” And by 1872 Chapin was back in San Francisco, still trying to sell his mining claims. He wrote to Thornton offering a mining claim near Devil’s Gate for a hefty $100,000 (likely the same two Gold Hill Front lodes), touting his “great expectations” for the property. But his “Hope Mining Co.” at Silver City, he acknowledged, had recently become “embarrassed” and (as he put it) “went to the wall.” By 1880, Chapin House had been converted into a boarding house, with a “Mrs. Cavanaugh” as the proprietor. Meanwhile, back east, one of Chapin’s sisters had married a Wheaton and was living in Norton, Massachusetts. She persuaded Samuel, her favorite brother, to leave Nevada with his wife in 1884, and move back to Massachusetts. There he lived with the sister, and became a Trustee of Wheaton College from 1889-1890. At the ripe old age of 78, Chapin conceived the notion of revisiting “scenes of his early life,” and eagerly joined a group of fellow pioneers for a trip back to California. It would be his last big adventure. Chapin died of a sudden heart attack in San Bernardino, California on April 17, 1890, where he’d stopped with his fellow pioneers on their way to San Francisco. Chapin had just finished delivering a rousing address to the crowd at a reception. His last words were uplifting ones: “God bless the noble State and the dear people of California!” Chapin’s body was placed in an “elegant coffin,” said to be identical to the one in which General Grant had been buried. His body lay in state in San Bernardino, with solemnities conducted by the Native Sons of the Golden West and the San Bernardino Pioneers, before being loaded on a train its for final return to Boston. In later years, both Chapin Hall at Wheaton College and Chapin Street in Alameda, California would be named in Chapin’s honor. As for stately Chapin House, it continues to keep its silent vigil, looking down over the town of Virginia City from its lofty perch on “C” Street. And here’s the last fun piece of the story: boardinghouse-keeper Mrs. Cavanaugh — or perhaps even Samuel himself — may not entirely have vacated the premises. Visitors have been said to “complain of an uneasy feeling,” as if there’s a ghost that still remains! Karen Dustman writes frequently about Sierra history. K-9 Unit

Returning home from work, a somewhat naive woman was shocked to find her house ransacked and burglarized. She telephoned the police at once and reported the crime. The police dispatcher broadcast the call on the radio, and a K-9 unit, patrolling nearby, was the first to respond. As the K-9 officer approached the house with his dog on a leash, the woman ran out on the porch, shuddered at the sight of the cop and his dog, then sat down on the steps. Putting her face in her hands, she moaned, ‘I come home to find all my possessions stolen. I call the police for help, and what do they do? They send me a BLIND policeman!’

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Pencil’s Tale

An old pencil maker took his newest pencil aside, just before he was about to pack him into a box. Imagining the little fellow as a person he recalled a few things about the pencil. “There are five things you need to know,” he said to his pencil, “before I send you out into the world. Always remember these five things - never forget them - and you will become the best pencil you can be! The first thing is to remember that you will be able to do many great things, but only if you put yourself in someone else’s hands. From time to time you will experience a painful sharpening, but remember that this will make you a better pencil. Also, keep in mind that you will be able to correct any mistakes you might make along the way. And the most important part of you is what’s on the inside. And remember this, as well, upon every surface that you are used, you must leave your mark. No matter what else happens, you must continue to write.” It seemed the pencil listened to him and promised he would remember these five things so that he could live his life with heart and purpose.

Getting to Heaven from the Post Office

A preacher, newly called to a small country town, needed to mail a letter. Passing a young boy on the street, the pastor asked where he could find the post office. After getting his answer, the minister thanked the boy and said, “If you’ll come to the community church this evening, you can hear me tell everyone how to get to heaven.” “I don’t know, sir,” the boy replied. “You don’t even know how to get to the post office!” SEW HAPPY SEWING SCHOOL, 1 ON 1 HAND sewing and sewing machine classes, 3 years and older, Shirley shirleyrash@gmail.com (775)267-4772 GREATER HEALTH IS WITHIN YOUR REACH! ‘Plogging’: The new running trend you should try!

This trend encourages people to pick up litter while out running. So, it’s not just good for your health, it’s also good for the environment. It’s called ‘plogging’—a portmanteau of jogging and the Swedish plocka upp, meaning ‘pick up.’ So hot is this new trend that fitness app Lifesum is allowing its users to log and track their plogging activity as a workout. Plogging combines going for a run with intermittent squatting or lunging (to collect rubbish), which actually sounds like a pretty satisfying workout. According to Lifesum, a typical user will burn 288 calories in 30 minutes of plogging, which is more or less the same as what’s burned off while jogging. As with all fitness trends, there are plenty of #plogging pics on Instagram, offering a glimpse of what this trend looks like IRL. Ploggers take plastic bags along with them so they can store the collected litter they find along their route.

In light of the rising frequency of humans - grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field. They advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren’t expecting them. They also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear dung. Black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear dung has little bells in it and smells like pepper. CASH PAID FOR VINTAGE COSTUME JEWERLY. How do we toughen our children to stand up against a difficult future? By having them prance about merrily in a gentle spray of cool hose water? Of course not. That is why Wham-O invented one of the most dangerous toys to ever grace the American backyard, “The Water Wiggle”. Many of you know of the Wiggle and have the scars to prove it, but if you have not faced the suburban water serpent, here is what you are missing. You take a standard garden hose and attached a weighted sprinkler to its end. Picture a Medieval Morning Star, with a goofy face painted on it. Gather the kids around it. Turn on the hose and watch the carnage. Kids will laugh as the Wiggle magically rises into the air and will then be terrified as the aquatic worm lunges at them time and again. Never relenting until it turns them into a crying, moist grass-covered heap. Sixfinger - That tiny gun had some serious firepowerthose little plastic bullets hurt like heck! (You think your average seven-year-old boy is going to pay attention to the package disclaimer that warned against aiming the Sixfinger at human targets?) One of the bullets could be equipped with a cap, which exploded on impact if fired at your big sister’s shoe just so. Swing Wing - The Transogram Company had been producing mainstream toys such as tiddly-winks and doctor kits since 1959. Then one day in 1965 the vicepresident of product development, came up with the idea for the Swing Wing. The Swing Wing was similar to the Hula Hoop, but worn on the head and twirled by moving the neck and/or body in a back and forth motion Nothing says “fun” like a cerebral hemorrhage, so Swing Wing was eventually pulled from the market, leaving kids searching for a new fun way to get their spinal injuries on. Slip ‘n Slide - Wham-O introduced the Slip ‘n Slide in 1961, a time when neighborhood swimming pools were few and far between and water slide theme parks were non-existent. The idea was to cool off and have fun at the same time by running up to and then belly-flopping down on a water-slicked length of vinyl. Wham-O sold millions of Slip ‘n Slides over the years, and if a kid broke a toe on one of the stakes that secured the mat to the ground or left most of their epidermis on the driveway because they slid too far, well, as Mom always said “It’s your own fault, don’t come crying to me.” It wasn’t until the more litigious 1990s that words like “spinal cord injury” and “death” started appearing in the lengthy list of warnings included on the Slip ‘n Slide instruction sheet. Johnny Seven One Man Army - No wonder kids today get in so much trouble it’s those no-good video games they’re always playing. Nothing but shooting and street fighting and an overall culture of violence. Not like the toys of the 1960s. Continued...

Back then we had wholesome products like the Johnny Seven One Man Army, which was the biggest-selling boy’s toy gun of 1964. Johnny Seven came equipped with a cap pistol, rocket launcher, and “armor piercing” bullets, along other with a few other features necessary for stopping Communism dead in its tracks. Johnny Seven weighed about four pounds fully assembled, so a kid got a good aerobic workout when he ran around toting one outside in the fresh air and sunshine. Topper Toys used a unique tactic to give Johnny Seven maximum exposure; instead of only stocking it in toy and department stores, they also made it available in grocery stores, a place mom usually dragged her kids to at least once per week. Creepy Crawlers - An exposed hot plate combined with potentially toxic fumes equaled fun in 1964. The Thing Maker was a gadget you plugged in and then waited until it heated up to 300°F. Then you poured “Plasti-Goop” into the creepy insect-shaped metal molds and waited for them to heat-set. Ideally, you were supposed to wait until after you’d unplugged the Thing Maker and it had cooled off before removing your Creepy Crawlers, but who has time for that when you want to put a fake spider in your sister’s bed before she gets home? Burns and blisters were a fact of life in the plastic bug business, and you simply sprayed the injury with some Bactine and hid it from Mom so she wouldn’t take your Thing Maker away. Plasti-Goop was

marketed as “non-toxic,” but that was in 1964, before the dangers of little things like melted PVC and lead paint were well known. AMANA ELECTRIC DRYER, MOD.#NED5240 $150; Remington Rand Wood 4 drawer file cabinet $35; Friends of NRA sponsor sculptures, Teddy Roosevelt, George Washington $65 each; 32”x11.5Rx15” M&S tires $60 (530)306-4432

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Things a Mom Will Never Say

If everyone else is doing it, I guess it’s okay. Yep, it’s too cold in the house. Go ahead and turn up the heat. Just leave all the lights on... it makes the house look more cheery. Don’t worry about curfew. If you’re with your friends, I know you’re all right. You know, when you get right down to it, I am your cleaning lady! Forget about your homework. There’ll be plenty of time to do it later. Just because you live under my roof doesn’t mean you have to listen to everything I say. You’re right. You don’t have enough clothes. Here’s my credit card. You’d better go shopping right away. Go ahead and keep that stray dog, honey. I’ll be glad to feed and walk him every day. Sweetie, I really need your opinion… Just because you were too sick to go to school today doesn’t mean you can’t hang out with your friends now. If you can’t say something nice about a person, text it. I’m not doing this for your own good. I’m doing it because I feel like it. To tell you the truth, I can’t really tell when you’re lying to me. When you get there, you get there. No need to call. You know, I really do care who started it and, yes, you have my permission to end it. Don’t worry about going to church. You were out too late last night. Let’s wait and see if your socks pick themselves up first. Actually, I am made out of money!

Adopted Turtle

Deep within a forest a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the ground. The turtle tried again and again while a couple of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. Finally, the female bird turned to her mate. “Dear,” she chirped, “I think it’s time to tell him he’s adopted.” INCOME TAX, GEORGE HALLIFAX, CPA, EA, TAX preparation, Federal and all States, prior years, audit representation, 30 years experience, reasonable rates (775)392-0418 AIR COMPRESSOR 5HP 1750RPM, 230 VOLTS tank, model 3020, maximum P.S.I. 200 $800 OBO (775)265-2578 COMPLETE LANDSCAPING, RESIDENTIAL and commercial, weekly maintenance, tree trimming, emergency repairs, sprinklers/drip, pavers, patios, retaining walls, Davenport Landscape and Design, NV Lic.#0074827, davenportlandscape.com or (775)2651491 or (775)721-8439

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Testing for Gossip

How much did Robert Mueller’s investigation cost?

According to the latest filing in December, Mueller had spent just over $25 million if you include all costs. That amount tracks spending through September 2018. Mueller’s team has tracked its spending in sixth-month increments, and it has been roughly six months since September. So, with that in mind, we can try to project the total costs. Mueller has spent roughly $6.5 million to $10 million in total costs in each period. Therefore, it would stand to reason the cost of the probe might come to between $31 million and $35 million. In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said, “Do you know what I just heard about your friend?” “Hold on a minute”, Socrates replied. “Before telling me anything I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test.” “Triple filter?” “That’s right”, Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?” “No,” the man said, “Actually I just heard about it and ...” “All right”, said Socrates. “So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?” “No, on the contrary.” “So”, Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about him, but you’re not certain it’s true. You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?” “No, not really.” “Well”, concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?” $69 SERVICE CALL, ACADEMY APPLIANCE Service; washers, dryers, refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, compactors, some areas extra charge, Serving Carson Valley (775)781-4725 LAWN CARE SERVICE! PROJECTRA - Men given this experimental new drug were far more likely to actually finish a household repair project before starting a new one. CHILDAGRA - Men taking this drug reported a sudden, over-whelming urge to perform more child-care tasks - especially cleaning up spills and “little accidents.” COMPLIMENTRA - In clinical trials, 82 percent of middle-aged men administered this drug noticed that their wives had a new hairstyle. Currently being tested to see if its effects extend to noticing new clothing. BUYAGRA - Married and otherwise attached men reported a sudden urge to buy their sweeties expensive jewelry and gifts after talking this drug for only two days. Still to be seen: whether the drug can be continued for a period longer than your favorites store’s return limit. FLATULAGRA - This complex drug converts men’s noxious intestinal gases back into food solids. Special bonus: Dosage can be double for long car rides. The Veterinarian

A Veterinarian was feeling ill and went to see her doctor. The doctor asked her all the usual questions, about symptoms, how long had they been occurring, etc., when she interrupted him: “Hey look, I’m a vet - I don’t need to ask my patients these kind of questions: I can tell what’s wrong just by looking.” She smugly added, “Why can’t you?” The doctor nodded, stood back, looked her up and down, quickly wrote out a prescription, handed it to her and said, “There you are. Of course, if that doesn’t work, we’ll have to put you to sleep.”

While House Sparrows may or may not be the most loved birds, they certainly are a part of our backyard bird watching experience. Initially these birds were imported from England. Brought to the US because they were known to eat certain caterpillars that harm shade trees. One by one, other US cities began importing them for the same purpose. In less than 50 years this small bird has a range that includes the entire U.S. and well into Canada. Unfortunately, they didn’t go after the caterpillars hoped for. While intentions were good, the outcome has been just the opposite. Our native cavity nesters have not evolved fast enough to compete with these highly competitive birds. Their nesting, feeding, and mating habits can be observed easily due to their long multiple breeding season. The mating habits or courtship behavior of the House Sparrow can begin as early as January and continue through July. The males claim their nest sites and defend its immediate territory. There is no defined area outside the nest that the bird defends. The male chirps by the nest site trying to attract a female. When a female comes by, the male chirps louder and more quickly. Sometimes the male will follow the female a short distance and hop or wing quiver around her if she passes by him. Other males may join in trying to attract the same female. Mating occurs throughout the breeding cycle, (March through early August) near the nest site, and may occur several times during the day. Once the birds pair, nesting begins. These birds are monogamous, usually for life. Although lost mates are quickly replaced during the breeding season. MIKES HORSESHOEING SERVICE, 34 YEARS experience! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” A Little History, Etc. on Measles

What is the Difference Between 24 Months vs. 2T?

If you look closely, you will notice the differences between clothes labeled “24 Months” and those with the “2T” label. Essentially, 24 months is for children that are still in the baby stages while 2T is designed for toddlers. 24 Months have a rounder fit because they tend to leave more room for a diaper. You will also probably notice snaps between the legs for easy diaper access. 24 Months tends to be a bit shorter in length, both in tops and bottoms. This allows a baby to crawl without getting tangled up in the fabric. 2T clothes tend to be slimmer and have longer sleeves and pant legs. This fit tends to be better for children who walk upright and no longer wear a bulky diaper. 2T clothing typically does not have diaper snaps. As far as style goes, 2T tends to mimic adult clothing, just in a much smaller size. In contrast, 24-month clothing still looks babyish in style. In the 9th century, a Persian doctor published one of the first written accounts of measles disease. Francis Home, a Scottish physician, demonstrated in 1757 that measles is caused by an infectious agent in the blood of patients. In 1912, measles became a nationally notifiable disease in the United States, requiring U.S. healthcare providers and laboratories to report all diagnosed cases. In the first decade of reporting, an average of 6,000 measles-related deaths were reported each year. In the decade before 1963 when a vaccine became available, nearly all children got measles by the time they were 15 years of age. It is estimated 3 to 4 million people in the United States were infected each year. Also, each year, among reported cases, an estimated 400 to 500 people died, 48,000 were hospitalized, and 1,000 suffered encephalitis (swelling of the brain) from measles. In 1954, John F. Enders and Dr. Thomas C. Peebles collected blood samples from several ill students during a measles outbreak in Boston, Massachusetts. They wanted to isolate the measles virus in the student’s blood and create a measles vaccine. They succeeded in isolating measles in 13-year-old David Edmonston’s blood. In 1963, John Enders and colleagues transformed their Edmonston-B strain of measles virus into a vaccine and licensed it in the United States. In 1968, an improved and even weaker measles vaccine, developed by Maurice Hilleman and colleagues, began to be distributed. This vaccine, called the Edmonston-Enders (formerly “Moraten”) strain has been the only measles vaccine used in the United States since 1968. Measles vaccine is usually combined with mumps and rubella (MMR), or combined with mumps, rubella and varicella (MMRV). Learn more about measles vaccine. In 1978, CDC set a goal to eliminate measles from the United States by 1982. Although this goal was not met, widespread use of measles vaccine drastically reduced the disease rates. By 1981, the number of reported measles cases was 80% less compared with the previous year. However, a 1989 measles outbreaks among vaccinated school-aged children prompted the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) to recommend a second dose of MMR vaccine for all children. Following widespread implementation of this recommendation and improvements in first-dose MMR vaccine coverage, reported measles cases declined even more. Measles was declared eliminated (absence of continuous disease transmission for greater than 12 months) from the United States in 2000. This was thanks to a highly effective vaccination program in the United States, as well as better measles control in the Americas region. Cont...

Signs and symptoms: The symptoms of measles generally appear about seven to 14 days after a person is infected. Measles typically begins with high fever, cough, runny nose (coryza), and red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis). Two or three days after symptoms begin, tiny white spots (Koplik spots) may appear inside the mouth. The Seven Wonders of the World

A group of school children were asked to list what they thought were the present “Seven Wonders of The World.” Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes: Egypt’s Great Pyramids - Taj Mahal - Grand Canyon - Panama Canal - Empire State Building - St. Peter’s Basilica - Great Wall of China While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So, she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The little girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there are so many.” The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.” The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the “Seven Wonders of The World” are: To see - To hear - To touch - To taste - To feel - To laugh - To love.” The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous. A gentle reminder - that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man. A Penny for Your Thoughts

A Scottish lad and lass were sitting together on a heathery hill in the Highlands. They had been silent for a while, then the lass said, “A penny for your thoughts.” The lad was a bit abashed, but he finally said, “Well, I was thinkin’ how nice it would be if ye’d give me a wee bit of a kiss.”So she did so. But he again lapsed into a pensive mood which lasted long enough for the lass to ask him, “What are ye thinkin’ now?” To which the lad replied: “Well, I was hopin’ ye hadn’t forgot the penny!” PLUMBING, LEAKY PIPES, SERVICE AND REPAIR, remodels, new construction, residential and commercial, since 1997, bonded and insured, guaranteed, NV#47214, CA#513872, Call Robert (775)6901441 GOT WOOD? What is Zombie Deer Disease

A mad cow-like infectious disease that can turn the brains of deer, elk, and moose into “Swiss cheese” is spreading in at least 24 states — and some experts are warning that it could eventually make its way into humans. Known as chronic wasting disease, the fatal progressive neurodegenerative illness was first identified in the 1960s. Like mad cow, the disease is spread by prions, the zombie-like pathogenic proteins that aren’t alive and can’t be killed. When they infect an animal, they eat away at its brain, causing a cascade of symptoms that resemble dementia and eventually lead to death. While the disease is still rare, researchers believe it’s more widespread than ever due, in part, to how humans trade deer and other hoofed mammals. “What we’ve seen over the last few decades is that it’s slowly spreading in wild deer populations,” said Peter Larsen, an assistant professor in veterinary sciences at the University of Minnesota who has been studying the pathogen. It’s also spreading among captive deer, elk, and reindeer, which are transported around the country and overseas to hunting ranches, petting zoos, and Christmasthemed farms. That’s how the disease ended up in South Korea, Larsen said. (It’s been identified in Canada and Norway, too.) When new outbreaks start, they are virtually impossi-

ble to contain because, unlike viruses and bacteria, prions can’t be killed. There’s also no good way to find them. So we’re talking about an indestructible, killer pathogen that could be lurking anywhere. Researchers have long wondered whether the disease, like mad cow, can make the leap into humans. (Mad cow in people is known as Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.) Late last summer, we got a preliminary and frightening answer. In a paper published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, researchers from Scotland and Canada showed via an experiment in a petri dish that prions from sick animals can indeed infect human cells. Since then, there’s been no direct evidence of human disease, even in people who ate meat that later tested positive for the pathogenic prions. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” A Special Prayer for Memorial Day

As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our servicemen and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection. We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes, and we pray your peace, provision, and strength will fill their lives. May the members of our armed forces be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord’s mighty power to accomplish each task.
