“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The “Back Nine” of Life

You know… time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems like just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is… the “back nine” of my life and it catches me by surprise. How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that “I was only on the first hole” and the “back nine” was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is…my friends are retired and getting grey…they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me…but, I see the great change…Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant…but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we’d become. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore… it’s mandatory! Cause if I don’t on my own free will… I just fall asleep where I sit! And so…now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though I’m on the “back nine”, and I’m not sure how long it will last…this I know, that when it’s over on this earth…it’s over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done…things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime. So, if you’re not on the “back nine” yet…let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don’t put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you’re on the “back nine” or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life… so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember…and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!! YARD SALE, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, MAY 19TH and 20th, 9am to 3pm, 1222 Fieldgate Court, Pleasantview/Gardnerville

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” A Letter to A Single Mother From Her Mom

Your Dog Bite?

There was a hound dog laying in the yard and an old geezer in overalls was sitting on the porch. “Excuse me, sir, but does your dog bite?” the tourist asked. The old man looked up over his newspaper and replied, “Nope.” As soon as the tourist stepped out of his car, the dog began snarling and growling, and then attacked both his arms and legs. As the tourist flailed around in the dust, he yelled, “I thought you said your dog didn’t bite!” The old man muttered, “Ain’t my dog.” JANS TROPICS AND ELEGANT POOCH, 50 YEARS serving Carson! dog and cat grooming, pet supplies and tropical fish, 1000 Corbett St., Carson City (775)882-5659 or (775)882-4928 17TH ANNUAL SARATOGA SPRINGS COMMUNITY Garage Sale, Saturday, May 20th, 8am to 3pm; 85 plus homes in Minden, Entrances at Stephanie Way and South Santa Barbara, Vicky Lane and Jackie Lane and Vicky Lane and South Santa Barbara

May 14th- Happy Mother’s Day! 10

Why do people think that single mothers did something wrong? And why do people talk like single mothers are new? In this wonderful story, we find out how single parenthood generation after generation proved how it just made one family stronger and more enduring. Finally, I had to admit to myself that I wasn’t making it on my own as a single parent with a four-year-old son and a thirteen-month-old daughter. Reluctantly, I had written my parents asking if I could move in with them until I could find a teaching position and manage on my own. I knew it would not be an easy decision for them to make. Living in a small town, my mother had always worried about “what people would think.” Her response came more quickly than I had expected. As I held her unopened letter, I wondered if the rapid reply was good news or bad. With careful concern, I tore open the end of the envelope. Her typewritten letter was folded in the formal standard she had learned as a secretary after graduating from high school. It read: Dear Linda, You must quit beating up on yourself and feeling so ashamed over needing to move back home with the children because of the divorce. I want you to know that you are not the first woman in the family to be a single parent and fall on hard times. I hope you will find courage and take pride in the woman I am going to tell you about. Linda, did you not realize that World War II made me a single parent while Daddy was overseas for two years? I had to go back to live with my parents on their farm, Miles from town and friends. But it was such a blessing in disguise because grandma was willing to rock you when you had constant earaches, and I was able to help her with the household chores. Your daddy sent us ration books, so I could get sugar and shoes and gasoline to supplement my folks’ needs. Now that you understand that you were not the first woman in our family to be a single parent, please come back home knowing that your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters and cousins are here to be family for you. With the rich heritage of women who have found a way to give their children a wonderful future, in spite of hardships, you will be in very good company. Come back home as soon as possible. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Why does Easter change each year?

Where Did She Go?

An elderly woman in her nineties had a visitor from her church come to see her at the nursing home. “How are you?” the visitor asked. “Oh,” said the elderly woman, “I’m just worried sick!” “You look like you’re in good health. They take good care of you here, don’t they?” “Oh, yes, they take good care of me here.” “Do you have any pain?” the visitor asked. “No, I can’t say I do,” the elderly woman replied. “Then what has you worried sick?” the visitor asked. The elderly woman leaned in and explained, “All of my closest friends have already died and gone to heaven. I’m sure they are all wondering where I went!” TIRED OF BEING DULL? For Christians around the world, Easter Sunday - the day honoring Jesus’ resurrection - is one of the most important days of the year. But this sacred day is also considered a “moveable feast” and can fall between March 22 and April 25 of any given year. You’re probably wondering why such an important date would move so much, or even how the date is chosen every year. The Easter schedule was actually originally tied to the celebration of Passover, which is tied to lunar cycles. Since Jesus and his apostles were Jewish, Christ’s death was recorded as occurring after Passover. Easter is celebrated shortly after that. But there’s more to that story. In ancient times, Christians around the world celebrated Easter on different days - some celebrated the day after Passover, while others celebrated on the first Sunday following Passover. It wasn’t until 325 CE that the Council of Nicaea created a mathematical formula to standardize the celebration date. Since then, Easter Sunday has been celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon of the spring season. If the full moon falls on a Sunday, Easter is celebrated the week after. The Hebrew calendar, which is entirely different from the Gregorian one, no longer plays a role. And while the drastic shift in dates used to mean the difference between wearing winter boots to church vs. fancy dress shoes (or even an indoor vs. outdoor meal), this winter has been so unpredictable, it’s worthwhile to plan for anything. You’re Right

The other day, Louise and I got into some petty argument. (I say it was petty. She would have said it was Armageddon.) As is our nature, neither of us would admit the possibility that we might be in error. To her credit, Louise finally said, ‘Look. I’ll tell you what. I’ll admit I’m wrong if you admit I was right.’ ‘Fine.’ I said. She took a deep breath, looked me in the eye and said, ‘I’m wrong.’ I grinned and replied, ‘You’re right.’

From the moment you hold your baby in your arms, you will never be the same. You might long for the person you were before, when you had freedom and time, And nothing in particular to worry about. You will know tiredness like you never knew it before, and days will run into days that are exactly the same, full of feedings and burping, nappy changes and crying, Whining and fighting, naps or a lack of naps, it might seem like a never-ending cycle. But don’t forget … there is a last time for everything. There will come a time when you will feed your baby for the very last time. They will fall asleep on you after a long day and it will be the last time you ever hold your sleeping child. One day you will carry them on your hip then set them down, and never pick them up that way again. You will scrub their hair in the bath one night and from that day on they will want to bathe alone. They will hold your hand to cross the road, then never reach for it again. They will creep into your room at midnight for cuddles, and it will be the last night you ever wake to this. One afternoon you will sing “the wheels on the bus” and do all the actions, then never sing them that song again. They will kiss you goodbye at the school gate, the next day they will ask to walk to the gate alone. You will read a final bedtime story and wipe your last dirty face. They will run to you with arms raised for the very last time. The thing is, you won’t even know it’s the last time until there are no more times. And even then, it will take you a while to realize. So while you are living in these times, remember there are only so many of them and when they are gone, you will yearn for just one more day of them. For one last time. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Woman Writes Best Letter

Birthdays and Anniversaries!

A guy who had forgotten the dates for a number of his friends’ and relatives’ birthdays and anniversaries, decided to compile a list on his computer and have the dates highlighted on the screen when the machine was turned on. He went to a number of computer stores to find a software program that would do the job but had no luck at the first few. Finally, he found one where the clerk seemed experienced. “Can you recommend something that will remind me of birthdays and anniversaries?” the guy asked. “Have you tried a wife?” the clerk responded. Dear Mr. Thatcher, I have been a loyal user of your ‘Always’ maxi pads for over 20 years and I appreciate many of their features. Why, without the LeakGuard Core or Dri-Weave absorbency, I’d probably never go horseback riding or salsa dancing, and I’d certainly steer clear of running up and down the beach in tight, white shorts. But my favorite feature has to be your revolutionary Flexi-Wings. Kudos on being the only company smart enough to realize how crucial it is that maxi pads be aerodynamic. I can’t tell you how safe and secure I feel each month knowing there’s a little F-16 in my pants. Have you ever had a menstrual period, Mr. Thatcher? I’m guessing you haven’t. Well, my time of the month is starting right now. As I type, I can already feel hormonal forces violently surging through my body. Just a few minutes from now, my body will adjust and I’ll be transformed into what my husband likes to call ‘an inbred hillbilly with knife skills.’ Isn’t the human body amazing? As Brand Manager in the Feminine-Hygiene Division, you’ve no doubt seen quite a bit of research on what exactly happens during your customer’s monthly visits from ‘Aunt Flo’. Therefore, you must know about the bloating, puffiness, and cramping we endure, and about our intense mood swings, crying jags, and out-of-control behavior. You surely realize it’s a tough time for most women. The point is, sir, you of all people must realize that America is just crawling with homicidal maniacs in Capri pants... Which brings me to the reason for my letter. Last month, while in the throes of cramping so painful I wanted to reach inside my body and yank out my uterus, I opened an Always maxi-pad, and there, printed on the adhesive backing, were these words: ‘Have a Happy Period.’ Are you kidding me? What I mean is, does any part of your tiny middle-manager brain really think happiness actual smiling, laughing happiness, is possible during a menstrual period? Did anything mentioned above sound the least bit pleasurable? Well, did it, James? FYI, unless you’re some kind of sick freak, there will never be anything ‘happy’ about a day in which you have to jack yourself up on Motrin and Kahlua and lock yourself in your house just so you don’t march down to the local store armed with a hunting rifle and a sketchy plan to end your life in a blaze of glory. For the love of God, man! If you have to slap a moronic message on a maxi pad, wouldn’t it make more sense to say something that’s actually pertinent, like ‘Put down the Hammer’ or ‘Vehicular Manslaughter is Wrong’. Sir, please inform your Accounting Department that, effective immediately, there will be an $8 drop in monthly profits, for I have chosen to take my maxi-pad busi-

Either some pedestrians believe they are entitled to traffic stopping when they enter a crosswalk or they just assume drivers will see them and stop. This is not the case so please help prevent an accident from happening. Always check for traffic. Never assume you have the right of way or that a driver will stop. It’s probably a good idea to assume that all drivers are distracted until you confirm otherwise. Don’t cross the street until making eye contact with the driver. Put headphones and devices down when crossing the street. If you need to use a cell phone, stop walking and find a safe place to talk or use it. Pedestrians do have the right of way at crosswalks; but be careful, some drivers don’t always follow the rules or other. Being right won’t keep you from being hit. I walked into my sister’s kitchen and found my nephew having a snack. “Where’s your mother?” I asked. “She is upstairs, said she was going to take a shower. Hang on, let me check.” He stepped into the nearby bathroom and flushed the toilet. A second later a sharp yell came from upstairs. Name the Animals

The first-grade teacher was showing pictures of animals to her students to see how many they could name. She held up a picture of a lamb, and a little girl said, “That’s a sheep!” “That’s right!” said the teacher. “How about THIS one?” she said, holding up a picture of the king of beasts. “That’s a lion!” answered a little boy. “Right!” said the teacher. Then she held up a picture of a deer. No one volunteered an answer. She tried to help. “What does your mother call your father?” Johnny said, “I know! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” I’m Leaving!

Harry was stunned to come home from work one evening and find his wife stuffing all her belongings into a suitcase. “What on earth are you doing?” he cried. “I can’t stand it anymore!” she shrieked. “Thirty-two years we’ve been married, and all we do is bicker and quarrel and ignore each other. I’m leaving!” Harry watched his wife close the suitcase, lug it down the stairs, and proceed to walk out of the house... out of his life. Suddenly, he was galvanized into action. Running into the bedroom and grabbing a second suitcase, he yelled back at his wife, “Sylvia, you’re right, you’re absolutely right, and I can’t bear it either. What is your idea of the “perfect mom?” Is it frustrating for you to live up to your own ideal? I am guessing yes, probably because, well the truth is we are not perfect! But the thing about Mom’s, imperfect as we are, we have a God given gift. Call it intuition, or knowing your child better than anyone else on the planet, but it is an eternal bond that is programmed into our DNA. I heard my daughter crying in the hospital’s nursery. Turning my light on to signal the nurse’s station, I asked for the nurse to bring her to me. She responded. “how do you know it is your baby crying?” I said, “go check and if it is her please bring her to me.” A few minutes later, handing me my new pink bundle, she commented saying, “that’s unbelievable for you to recognize your daughter’s cry after only 1 day.” It’s the connection! Just a few years later I witnessed our friends, distraught and weeping over the casket of their precious 6 year - old boy. David had died from cancer. My heart broke along with theirs and seeing this boy who was the same age as my son triggered fearful emotions in me. The day after this little guy’s funeral, my mom called me early in the morning and said, “I sense there is something wrong. What’s going on?” I described the events of the previous day and although Mom didn’t have any profound advice to give, she prayed for me and the Lord gave me peace. It was the connecting bond between us that prompted her call. What about the heart of a child who has been rejected and abused by his or her mom? More often than not I have seen those children who have even grown to adulthood display an undying loyalty to an undeserving mother. Why is that? It is a need for love that can only come from Mom. It is a connection between a mother and child unlike any other. In her book, Mother Daughter Wisdom, Christiane Northrop, M.D. wrote some interesting points about the importance of bonding with daughters especially. She says “it helps wire emotional regulation that is crucial to her sense of well- being and ability to maintain a stable mood. A loving attentive mother gives her daughter the sense that all is well and the ability to self soothe. A mother’s resourcefulness and ability to adapt help a child wire in the ability to maintain mood stability throughout life. When a mom holds her baby against her heart and bonds emotionally with her, she is actually providing stimulus needed for brain development that will enable her to soothe and modulate her own emotions, whether they be anger, sadness, loneliness, fear, joy and love.” Though the ability to bond is a natural part of who most mothers are, please do not forget that the strength needed to implement what we have been given comes from God Himself and we must look to Him daily. Mary, Jesus mother said, “behold, I

A Letter from Grandma

Dear Grand-daughter, The other day I went up to our local Christian book store and saw a ‘Honk if you love Jesus’ bumper sticker... I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting. So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, am I glad I did; what an uplifting experience that followed. I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn’t notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed. I found that lots of people love Jesus! While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, ‘For the love of God!’ `Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!’ What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Everyone started honking! I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach. I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. I asked my teenage great grandson in the back seat what that meant. He said it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back. My grandson burst out laughing. Why even he was enjoying this religious experience!! A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection. I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared. So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!! Will write again soon. Love, Grandma

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC)...

Drug overdose deaths and opioid-involved deaths continue to increase in the United States. The majority of drug overdose deaths (more than six out of ten) involve an opioid. Since 1999, the number of overdose deaths involving opioids (including prescription opioids and heroin) quadrupled. From 2000 to 2015 more than half a million people died from drug overdoses. 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. We now know that overdoses from prescription opioids are a driving factor in the 15-year increase in opioid overdose deaths. Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the U.S. nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report. Deaths from prescription opioids -drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and methadone have more than quadrupled since 1999. HOME REPAIR PRO, MR. Raffle Prizes

Bubba and Earl were in the local bar enjoying a beer when they decided to get in on the weekly charity raffle. They bought five tickets each at a dollar a pop. The following week, when the raffle was drawn, each had a prize won. Earl won 1st prize, a year’s supply of gourmet spaghetti sauce and extra-long spaghetti. Bubba won 6th prize, a toilet brush. About a week or so had passed when the men met back in the neighborhood bar for a couple of beers. Bubba asked Earl how he liked his prize, to which Earl replied, “Great, I love spaghetti! How about you, how’s that toilet brush?” “Not so good,” replied Bubba, “I reckon I’m gonna go back to paper.” PIONEER GLASS PLUS, RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, emergency services, fair prices, dependable quick service, quality work, 45 years experience, Frank Boudreau, owner NV#7876 (775)720-2373 LET US UNLOAD ON YOU! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” God’s Secret By Barbara from Bishop

Oh, why can’t I write of the beauty I see as I sit ‘neath the tall stately pines? The green valley below and blue sky up above; ‘tis a picture of heaven divine! I’m breathless with awe, complete disbelief of the land that spreads out at my feet. Yet my pen cannot write nor my tongue ever tell, what I’ve found at my Tahoe retreat! Oh, why can’t I write of the beauty I see; of the joy and the comfort I feel? The stillness and peace of God’s virgin land is something I’d like to reveal. I see the Lord’s work wherever I look at the valley, the lake and the trees. And I hear His soft voice speaking gently to me in the still, quiet breath of the breeze. Oh, why can’t I write of the beauty I see and share it with all, young or old? Perhaps it’s because God wanted to have His heaven on earth kept untold. So I offer thanksgiving for the beauty I’ve found in the paradise here in the pines. And if it’s His will, this heaven on earth will remain just God’s secret…and mine. THE BABY CHICKS ARE HERE AND NOW taking orders for turkeys at Benson Feed; great prices on fertilizer, weed killer and spring horse shots, Carson City (775)882-3999

Senior Funnies

Your sweetie says, “Let’s go upstairs and be romantic,” and you answer, “Honey, I can’t do both!” Your friends compliment you on your new alligator shoes and you’re barefoot. A sexy babe catches your fancy and your pacemaker opens the garage door nearest your car. Going bra-less pulls all the wrinkles out of your face. You don’t care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don’t have to go along. When it takes longer to rest than to get tired. When you are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead of by the police. “Getting a little action” means I don’t need to take any fiber today. “Getting lucky” means you find your car in the parking lot. An “all nighter” means not getting up to pee! ACME BOAT & RV STORAGE – RESIDENT MANAGER, fenced, lighted, lowest rates around, Gardnerville (775)265-4766 KENMORE DRYER $125; HOTSY STEAM CLEANER $750; 3’ diameter commercial barbecue $850 (775)782-2422

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Half Full or Half Empty?

One day in philosophy class they spent a great deal of time debating whether the glass was half full or half empty. After the class, one student was feeling pretty good about himself and what he was learning at the university, so when he went home he tried to continue the discussion with his family. With maximum drama, he took a 12 ounce glass from the cupboard and poured in 6 ounces of water. Then he took it into the dining room and placed it in the middle of the table. He proudly asked his family, “can anyone tell me whether this glass is half full or half empty?” Without missing a beat, his grandmother replied, “Depends on if you’re drinking or pouring.” CHIZEK CONCRETE PUMPING, GROUT AND 3/4 line pump; Residential and commercial, prompt, dependable service, Brad (775)721-0055 DON’T HUMP IT, PUMP IT! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” A Mother’s Love

A mother’s love is something that no one can explain, it is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain. It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may, for nothing can destroy it or take that love away. It is patient and forgiving when all others are forsaking, and it never fails or falters even though the heart is breaking. It believes beyond believing when the world around condemns, and it glows with all the beauty of the rarest, brightest gems. It is far beyond defining, it defies all explanation, and it still remains a secret like the mysteries of creation. A many splendored miracle man cannot understand and another wondrous evidence of God’s tender guiding hand. Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms!!
