Father and son

A father and son went fishing one day. While they were out in the boat, the boy suddenly became curious about the world around him. He asked his father, “How does this boat float? The father replied, “Don’t rightly know son.” A little later, the boy looked at his father and asked, “How do fish breath underwater?” Once again the father replied, “Don’t rightly know son.” A little later the boy asked his father, “Why is the sky blue?” Again, the father replied. “Don’t rightly know son.” Finally, the boy asked his father, “Dad, do you mind my asking you all of these questions?” The father replied, “Of course not, you don’t ask questions, you never learn nothin’.”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Home

The greatest love affair of my life isn’t with a person, but a house. It may seem shallow, but really it’s far from it. My great grandfather built this house with his bare hands in the late 1930’s. The living room I sit in while I write this is the same living room I sat in when my grandfather brought me here to visit his mother, my great grandma. She always kept a candy dish full of candy on her coffee table, the same coffee table that sits right in front of me now. The solid oak floors beneath my feet are the same oak floors that sat underneath the feet of several generations of my family. This house has witnessed my history. This roof has sheltered those who came before me and who made me who I am today. I believe I was around 5 years old when I told my grandpa on a warm spring afternoon that this is where I wanted to live when I grew up. This is where I wanted to raise my own family. Time passed as it always does. Family members passed as they unfortunately always do. I came back to the house, the house came back to me. It was exactly the same as I remembered. The furniture. The dark wood walls and floors. The long sunroom on the second floor. It glided from my memories into present day. The work it required to be livable again was overwhelming. The costs were staggering. I powered through it all, fueled only by a love that refused to die. Tonight I sit here with my partner, our bellies full from a meal I prepared in the same kitchen my great grandmother prepared meals for her family. White smoke billows from the chimney. We are safe and warm and happy. I am finally home. An elderly man is stopped by the police around 2 a.m. and is asked where he is going at this time of night. A man was having marital problems. So he went to his counselor. The counselor says, “When you get home, throw down your briefcase, take off your clothes, run to her, embrace her, and passionately kiss her.” In two weeks he was back in the counselor’s office. I’m a changed person

There is no use looking back at yesterday. I am no longer the person I was back then. Every morning when the sun rises, I am a changed person. Changed by the experiences I’ve had, the lessons I have learned, and the love I have received. It’s time to move forward and embrace the life that I’ve been given, be grateful for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon me, and start living a life of passion. There will always be ups and downs, good times and bad, losses and gains. Life is about learning lessons, showing love in the process, and growing into the beautiful souls we are meant to become. Don’t let yesterday rob you of your happiness today. Every time the sun rises, it’s a new opportunity to make your life the best of your life. Enjoy every moment. Complimenting the wife

Joe had asked Bob to help him out with the deck after work, so Bob just went straight over to Joe’s place. When they got to the door, Joe went straight to his wife, gave her a hug and told her how beautiful she was and how much he had missed her at work. When it was time for supper, he complimented his wife on her cooking, kissed her and told her how much he loved her. Once they were working on the deck, Bob told Joe that he was surprised that he fussed so much over his wife. Joe said that he’d started this about six months ago, it had revived their marriage, and things couldn’t be better. Bob thought he’d give it a go. When he got home, he gave his wife a massive hug, kissed her and told her that he loved her. His wife burst into tears. Bob was confused and asked why she was crying. She said, “This is the worst day of my life. First, little Billy fell off his bike and twisted his ankle. Then, the washing machine broke and flooded the basement. And now, you come home drunk!” FOR SALE: 2 ACRES+ CORNER LOT/LAND, POWER IN, Highland Dr. on Bolton Loop, Douglas County NV., 1 mile from Topaz Lake, Call for details (775)530-9317

Engaged

A few moments after the daughter announced her engagement, her Father asked, “Does this fellow have any money?” “Oh Daddy, you men are all alike,” sighing deeply, she replied, “That’s exactly what he asked me about you.”

Here’s how to stop it! If you haven’t been using the privacy feature Facebook introduced last year, you really need to start. It’s called Off-Facebook Activity and it lets you see and control data that apps and websites share with the platform and keep monitoring the kind of information third-party apps can access. With the privacy feature, you can clear the history of apps and websites that have shared your data. You can also turn off future Off-Facebook activity, which tells Facebook to disconnect any information that the company has shared from your account. Or, you can selectively choose which companies you want to stop sharing your activity and it’ll stop showing you those targeted ads. How the Off-Facebook Activity tool works. Using Facebook’s business tools, you can see what information apps and websites have sent to Facebook. From there, you can clear the information from your account and turn off future “off-Facebook activity” from your account. You’ll be able to control this for all apps and websites so they’ll no longer be able to share your search activity with Facebook. To get started, go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Your Facebook Information > Off-Facebook Activity. From there, you can manage your Off-Facebook Activity, clear all history and turn off any future activity to your account. Once you clear the activity managed by the tool, Facebook will remove your identifying information that the apps and websites share. That means Facebook won’t know which websites you visited or what you looked at, so you won’t see any targeted ads from those sites. (cnet.com) HOME REPAIR PRO, MR. Children sent through the mail

One of the most overlooked, yet most significant innovations of the early 20th century might be the Post Office’s decision to start shipping large parcels and packages through the mail. While private delivery companies flourished during the 19th century, the Parcel Post dramatically expanded the reach of mail-order companies to America’s many rural communities, as well as the demand for their products. When the Post Office’s Parcel Post officially began on January 1, 1913, the new service suddenly allowed millions of Americans great access to all kinds of goods and services. But almost immediately, it had some unintended consequences as some parents tried to send their children through the mail. “It got some headlines when it happened, probably because it was so cute,” United States Postal Service historian Jenny Lynch tells Smithsonian.com. Just a few weeks after Parcel Post began, an Ohio couple named Jesse and Mathilda Beagle “mailed” their 8-month-old son James to his grandmother, who lived just a few miles away in Batavia. According to Lynch, Baby James was just shy of the 11-pound weight limit for packages sent via Parcel Post, and his “delivery” cost his parents only 15 cents in postage (although they did insure him for $50). The quirky story soon made newspapers, and for the next several years, similar stories would occasionally surface as other parents followed suit. Postage was cheaper than a train ticket. Where did she go?

An elderly woman in her nineties had a visitor from her church come to see her at the nursing home. “How are you?” the visitor asked. “Oh,” said the elderly woman, “I’m just worried sick!” “You look like you’re in good health. They take good care of you here, don’t they?” “Oh, yes, they take good care of me here.” “Do you have any pain?” the visitor asked.“No, I can’t say I do,” the elderly woman replied. “Then what has you worried sick?” the visitor asked. The elderly woman leaned in and explained, “All of my closest friends have already died and gone to heaven. I’m sure they are all wondering where I went!

Salmonella Outbreak in Finches

The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) and Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) are asking the public to be on the lookout for sick or dead finches associated with bird feeders. Finches across the western states are dying from an outbreak of salmonellosis, a common and often fatal bird disease caused by the salmonella bacteria. The problem appears to be especially bad along coastal Northern California, Oregon, and Washington, with reports of many sick and dying birds. Most affected by salmonellosis are Pine Siskins, but Lesser Goldfinch and other finch species can fall victim to salmonellosis as well. In recent weeks, dead siskins also have been found in backyards in the Carson Valley and Truckee. The bacteria are spread through droppings, and where bird seed piles up beneath feeders, or in tray feeders where the birds can simply stand among the seeds, droppings can accumulate in the seed itself. Please report any dead or visibly sick finches to either LTWC (530.577.2273) or TINS (775.298.0060) (yubanet.com) MIKES HORSESHOEING SERVICE, 34 YEARS experience! Let go of your Stresses!

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: ”How heavy is this glass of water?” Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz. She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” She continued, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything.” It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses. As early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the evening and into the night. Remember to put the glass down! 2013 JAYFLIGHT/JAYSWIFT 19’ TRAVEL TRAILER for sale. Inner Peace

I am passing this on to you because it definitely works and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives. By following simple advice heard on a popular TV talk show, you too can find inner peace. The TV host proclaimed, “The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never finished.” So, I looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn’t finished, and before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of Zinfandel, a bottle of Bailey’s Irish Cream, a bottle of Kahlua, a package of Oreos, the remainder of my old Prozac prescription, the rest of the cheesecake, some Doritos, and a box of chocolates and the rest of my half-gallon of Blue Bell Original Vanilla Bean ice-cream. You have no idea how freaking good I feel right now. Please pass this on to those whom you think might be in need of inner peace. Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn’t move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands. When I sat down beside her she didn’t acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK. Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. “Yes, I’m fine, thank you for asking,” she said in a clear strong voice. “I didn’t mean to disturb you, Grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,” I explained to her. “Have you ever looked at your hands?” she asked. “I mean really looked at your hands?” I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making. Grandma smiled and related the following story: “Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. “These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. “They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent! “They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. “They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse. They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn’t understand. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. “They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. “These hands are the mark of where I’ve been and the ruggedness of life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ.” I will never look at my hands the same again. God reached out and took my grandma’s hands and led her home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of Grandma. I know she has been held by the hands of God. And I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face. Future plans

A couple in their early seventies were discussing their future plans. The husband asked, “What will you do if I die before you?” The wife thought for a moment before replying, “I will probably look to share a house with three other single or widowed women, maybe people a little younger than me since I am still active for my age. What about you? What will you do if I die first?” He answered, “Probably the same.”

92 today

An old fellow was celebrating 92 years on this Earth. He spoke to his toes. “Hello, toes!” he said, “How are you, toes? You know, you are 92 today. Oh, the times we’ve had! Remember we walked in the park in summer every Sunday afternoon. The times we waltzed on the dance floor? Happy Birthday, toes!” “Hello, knees,” he continued. “How are you, knees? You know you’re 92 today. Oh, the times we’ve had! Remember when we marched in the parade? Oh the hurdles we’ve jumped together. Happy Birthday knees!” Then, he looked down at his crotch. “Hello Willie! You little bugger, if you were alive today, you’d be 92.”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Cesar Chavez Day

The purpose of this holiday is to celebrate the birthday and the legacy of civil rights and labor movement leader Cesar Chavez. State offices and schools, however, are only closed in states which have this day listed as a state holiday as well. For instance, state offices and schools are closed in Arizona, California and New Mexico are closed on this day. Born as Cesario Estrada Chavez on March 31, 1927, around Yuma, Arizona, Cesar Chavez spent much of his young life living the life as a migrant farm worker with his family. His life as a migrant worker allowed him to see the treatment, wages and working conditions of migrant workers up close. He knew the hardships they faced because he faced them too and he wanted to make a change for the better. So he decided to become a labor organizer in the 1950s. He would then go on to form the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. In 1965, his National Farm Workers Association joined forces with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee and together they organized their first strike against grape growers. This strike lasted 5 years and resulted in some grape companies offering their workers a contract. The following year, these two unions would merge together and were eventually renamed the United Farm Workers in 1972. All throughout his life, Chavez used nonviolent means to bring attention to the problems of farm workers, especially migrant farm workers. For many years, he led marches, boycotts, and hunger strikes. On April 23, 1993, Cesar Chavez died in San Luis, Arizona at the age of 66 years of age.

Horseback riding

A blonde man decides to try horseback riding, even though he has had no lessons or prior experience. He mounts the horse unassisted, and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the blond begins to slide from the saddle. In terror, he grabs for the horse’s mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. He tries to throw his arms around the horse’s neck, but he slides down the horse’s side anyway. The horse gallops along, seemingly oblivious of its slipping rider. Finally, giving up his frail grip, the blond man attempts to leap away from the horse and throw himself to safety. Unfortunately, his foot has become entangled in the stirrup, he is now at the mercy of the horse’s pounding hooves as his head is struck against the ground over and over. As his head is battered against the ground, he is mere moments away from unconsciousness when to his great fortune Frank, a Wal-Mart greeter, sees his dilemma and unplugs the horse. ...... And you thought all they did was say Hello.

Playing Dodgeball

So much thrown at me, and up against a wall I feel like I’ve spent my life, playing a game of dodgeball. Something thrown from the left, So I dodge to the right. Trying to keep from getting hit has been a constant fight. Occasionally, I am blindsided and hit square in the face, but I know I can’t quit playing, so I pick up the pace! Sometimes it really hurts and leaves quite a bruise, but I keep right on dodging because I don’t want to lose. But now that I’ve gotten older, I understand the game a little more. keeping your eye on the ball is wiser rather than trying to watch the score. Now that I’m an accomplished player, I can give good advice to you all. Keep dodging to the right or left, but never lose sight of the ball! (author unknown)

Ham Sandwich with Mustard

If you have children you will probably relate to this father… As ham sandwiches go, it was perfection. A thick slab of ham, a fresh bun, crisp lettuce and plenty of expensive, light brown, gourmet mustard. The corners of my jaw aching in anticipation, I carried it to the table in our backyard, picked it up with both hands but was stopped by my wife suddenly at my side. “Hold Johnny (our six-week-old son) while I get my sandwich,” she said. I had him balanced between my left elbow and shoulder and was reaching again for the ham sandwich when I noticed a streak of mustard on my fingers. I love mustard. I had no napkin. I licked it off. It was not mustard. No man ever put a baby down faster. It was the first and only time I have sprinted with my tongue protruding. With a washcloth in each hand I did the sort of routine shoeshine boys do, only I did it on my tongue. Later, after she stopped crying from laughing so hard, my wife said, “Now you know why they call that mustard ‘Poupon.” QUANTUM 600 POWER WHEEL CHAIR $300 OBO (775)790-0885

I Believe

I believe - That we don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change. I believe - That no matter how good a friend is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and, you must forgive them for that. I believe - That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love. I believe - That you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life. I believe - That it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be. I believe - That you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them. I believe - That you can keep going long after you can’t. I believe - That we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel. I believe - That either you control your attitude or it controls you. I believe - That regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place. I believe - That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. I believe - That money is a lousy way of keeping score. I believe - That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time! I believe - That sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you’re down, will be the ones to help you get back up. I believe - That sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel. I believe - That just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have. I believe - That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them and less to

do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated. I believe - That it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself. I believe - That no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief. I believe - That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become. I believe - That just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other, And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do. I believe - That you shouldn’t be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever. I believe - That two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different. I believe - That your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don’t even know you. I believe - That even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to help. I believe - That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being. I believe - That the people you care about most in life are the essence of life. The Trouble Tree

I hired a carpenter to help me restore an old farmhouse. He had just finished a rough first day on the job: a flat tire made him lose an hour of work, the electric saw quit and now his ancient pickup refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterwards he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier. “Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing’s for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.” “Funny thing is,” he smiled, “ when I come out in the morning to pick “em up, there ain’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Passover Story for Kids

God & Dog

On the first day of creation, God created the dog. On the second day, God created man to serve the dog. On the third day, God created all the animals of the earth to serve as potential food for the dog. On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labor for the good of the dog. On the fifth day, God created the tennis ball so that the dog might or might not retrieve it. On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the dog healthy and the man broke. On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but He had to walk the dog. PET CARE SERVICE! The first Passover happened long ago in the far-away country of Egypt. A mean and powerful king, called Pharaoh, ruled Egypt. Worried that the Jewish people would one day fight against him, Pharaoh decided that these people must become his slaves. As slaves, the Jewish people worked very hard. Every day, from morning until night, they hammered, dug, and carried heavy bricks. They built palaces and cities and worked without rest. The Jewish people hated being slaves. They cried and asked God for help. God chose a man named Moses to lead the Jewish people. Moses went to Pharaoh and said, “God is not happy with the way you treat the Jewish people. He wants you to let the Jewish people leave Egypt and go into the desert, where they will be free.” But Pharaoh stamped his foot and shouted, “No, I will never let the Jewish people go!” Moses warned, “If you do not listen to God, many terrible things, called plagues, will come to your land.” But Pharaoh would not listen, and so the plagues arrived. First, the water turned to blood. Next, frogs and, later, wild animals ran in and out of homes. Balls of hail fell from the sky and bugs, called locusts, ate all of the Egyptians’ food. Each time a new plague began, Pharaoh would cry, “Moses, I’ll let the Jewish people go. Just stop this horrible plague!” Yet no sooner would God take away the plague than Pharaoh would shout: “No, I’ve changed my mind. The Jews must stay!” So God sent more plagues. Finally, as the tenth plague arrived, Pharaoh ordered the Jews to leave Egypt. Fearful that Pharaoh might again change his mind, the Jewish people packed quickly. They had no time to prepare food and no time to allow their dough to rise into puffy bread. They had only enough time to make a flat, cracker-like bread called matzah. They hastily tied the matzah to their backs and ran from their homes. The people had not travelled far before Pharaoh commanded his army to chase after them and bring them back to Egypt. The Jews dashed forward, but stopped when they reached a large sea. The sea was too big to swim across. Frightened that Pharaoh’s men would soon reach them, the people prayed to God, and a miracle occurred. The sea opened up. Two walls of water stood in front of them and a dry, sandy path stretched between the walls. The Jews ran across. Just as they reached the other side, the walls of water fell and the path disappeared. The sea now separated the Jews from the land of Egypt. They were free! Each year at Passover, we eat special foods, sing songs, tell stories, and participate in a seder – a special meal designed to help us remember this miraculous journey from slavery to freedom. Mom visits her son for dinner

A Mom visits her son for dinner who lives with a girl roommate. During the course of the meal, his mother couldn’t help but notice how pretty his roommate was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between the two, and this had only made her more curious. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between him and his roommate than met the eye. Reading his mom’s thoughts, the son volunteered: “I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, we are just roommates.” About a week later, his roommate came to him saying: “Ever since your mother came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the silver plate. You don’t suppose she took it, do you?” He said: Well, I doubt it, but I’ll email her, just to be sure.” He sat down and wrote Dear Mother: I’m not saying that you ‘did’ take the silver plate from my house, I’m not saying that you ‘did not’ take the silver plate but the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here for dinner. Love, your son Several days later, he received an email from his Mother which read: Dear Son, I’m not saying that you ‘do’ sleep with your roommate, and I’m not saying that you ‘do not’ sleep with her. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her OWN bed, she would have found the silver plate by now, under the pillow…Love, Mom. What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? - Nacho Cheese

March 31, 2020 - What was life like in the United States 100 years ago today? The year 1920 ushered in a new decade and brought new innovations and a life of abundance. Let’s take a trip to the past and see what life was like for your ancestors 100 years ago today! Life Expectancy Was Shorter - In the United States, the life expectancy for men in 1920 was around 53.6 years. For women, it was 54.6 years. If you compare that number to today’s average life expectancy of 78.93 years, you can see just how much better we are doing! The main causes of death in 1920 were heart disease, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. The World Was Recovering from a Pandemic - By 1920, the world was just coming out of one of the greatest pandemics it had ever known. This flu, H1N1, known as the Spanish flu, infected about 27 percent of the world’s population. It is estimated to have killed at least 50 million people. The Automobile Industry Was Born - As the decade progressed, the 1920s invited increased prosperity due in major part to manufacturing jobs in the automotive industry. Additionally, the automotive industry led to steel production, highway building, and more. The automotive industry also introduced assembly-line work. Because companies such as Ford were using this new assemblyline technology, they were able to hire cheaper, less-skilled laborers. Many companies filled those positions with women. Alcohol Was Prohibited - The 18th Amendment to the United States Constitution went into effect on January 16, 1920. This amendment outlawed the production and consumption of alcohol and is commonly known as Prohibition. Many historians believe that it was during this time that organized crime began to increase. Black market alcohol, bootleggers, moonshiners, and speakeasies were part of the landscape of the 1920s. Women Could Finally Vote - The 19th Amendment was also ratified in 1920. In February of 1920, Carrie Chapman Catt founded the League of Women Voters in Chicago, Illinois. By August, the 19th Amendment had passed and gave women the right to vote in the United States. The League of Women Voters was created to encourage women to use their newfound influence at the voting polls. It is still a functioning organization today. Radios Were a Main Source of Entertainment - Today’s average family may prefer a binge-worthy television series, but 100 years ago the American family could be found huddled around the radio in living rooms across the nation. The first commercial radio station in the United States was Pittsburgh’s KDKA. Within a few short years, there were more than 500 stations across America. Jazz and Dance Clubs Were All the Rage - Radio programs broadcasted the news, sports, comedy, and music. The 1920s sparked a musical plethora of new styles such as jazz, blues, Broadway, and dance bands. With the introduction of fun, edgy music, many young people gravitated to dance clubs and roadhouses to socialize. They could gather with their friends and enjoy all the latest in music and dance steps such as the Charleston, black bottom, shimmy, fox-trot, and the Lindy Hop! Hats Were Essential to Fashion - Just like now, 100 years ago today men and women dressed for the occasion. In other words,

a woman might wear a traditional housedress while at home with her family. This simple cotton dress may have been made with colorful plaids or stripes and was comfortable for doing chores. But when a woman needed to run errands, she may have donned a “walking suit” or “day dress.” A lady would never be without her hat and gloves. These accessories were essentials in every woman’s wardrobe. From her bobbed styled hair to her Mary Jane sensible-heeled shoes, women of the 1920s had style and dressed appropriately for every event. Men’s fashion began to take on a more casual appearance in the 1920s too. Although the traditional business suit was still common, Grandpa may have tried a sportier trend with “oxford bag” pants and V-neck sweaters. Hats were a must for every man and served as a symbol of social status. The Most Popular Occupations - At the beginning of 1920, women typically worked as teachers, nurses, and maids, while men were mostly farmers, doctors, lawyers, and bankers. A hundred years ago seems very far away, but there are still some similarities to the way we live now. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” What is Senior Dementia in Dogs?

Senior dementia is formally known as canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) but is often also referred to as doggy dementia or doggy Alzheimer’s. Dementia isn’t a disease but rather a collection of symptoms that result in major changes in mood, behavior, and memory. It usually negatively affects the everyday life of a senior dog and is commonly seen to varying degrees as dogs age. The Behavior Clinic at the University of California states that 28% of dogs aged 11 to 12 years display signs of dementia and that likelihood increases to 68% of dogs when they reach ages 15 or 16.1 Signs of senior dementia: Soiling in the house, Getting lost in the house/disorientation, Barking without reason, Going to the wrong side of the door, Lack of interaction with people or other pets, Decrease or lack of appetite, Lower threshold for aggressive behavior, Anxiety, Irregular sleeping patterns, Staring at the walls, Pacing/repetitive behaviors. There is, unfortunately, no way to reverse the signs of dementia in dogs but there are some nutritional aids that can be administered to help potentially delay brain changes as a dog ages. Antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s) are the main dietary components that are often discussed for brain health. Your veterinarian will rule out other medical issues with your dog before diagnosing CCD. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Discovering Hidden Graves at Al Tahoe Cemetery (Part 1) by Karen Dustman

Fishing Trip

A man calls home to his wife and says, “Honey I have been asked to go fishing at a big lake up in Canada with my boss and several of his friends. We’ll be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I’ve been wanting, so would you please pack me enough clothes for a week and set out my rod and tackle box. We’re leaving from the office and I will swing by the house to pick my things up. Oh! And please pack my new blue silk pajamas.” The wife thinks this sounds a little fishy but being a good wife she does exactly what her husband asked. The following weekend he comes home a little tired but otherwise looking good. The wife welcomes him home and asks if he caught many fish. He says, “Yes! Lots of Walleye, some Blue gill, and a few Pike. But why didn’t you pack my new blue silk pajamas like I asked you to do?” The wife replies; “I did, they were in your tackle box.” PERFECTO GARDENING SERVICES, SERVING Carson Valley over 20 Years! I’ll confess we knew almost nothing about the historic Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery, until we were invited to visit last summer. Turns out this small graveyard near the shore of Lake Tahoe was set aside as early as 1869 by Thomas Rowland, one of Tahoe’s earliest settlers. And for many years it was known as the Rowland Cemetery. Originally a waystation operator at Strawberry, Thomas Rowland and his wife, Sophronia, purchased land here beside the lake in 1868 — probably for a song — after an earlier hotel burned down. Rowland erected a brand new station on the site, known (not surprisingly) as ‘Rowland’s.’ One of its main attractions: a saloon called the Customs House, perched jauntily at the end of a wooden pier that jutted out into the lake. And oh, the parties that once took place there! Rowland himself died in 1883, and the small community near the hotel (yes, also known as “Rowland’s”) soon faded away as people moved east to the larger economic center of Bijou. Rowland’s old hotel collapsed from heavy snow in the winter of 1889-90. Turns out they were big on recycling, even in those days; the hotel lumber was carted off and re-used in the lodge at Fallen Leaf. But the early cemetery that bore Rowland’s name remained behind, of course. And it continued to be used. Over the years, many of the early Tahoe pioneers found their eternal rest there, including Rowland’s wife, Sophronia. She died in 1919 at the ripe old age of 81. As the years crept by, the old cemetery grounds fell into disrepair. Once upon a time, cast-concrete angels had marked the cemetery’s corners, but those eventually disappeared. Oldtimers would recall that dozens of grave markers used to be visible, but many of those early headstones were stolen, too. Pretty soon it wasn’t entirely clear how large the cemetery had been. A residential neighborhood sprouted up nearby, and several new homes unwittingly encroached on the original cemetery’s perimeter. The last official burial, they say, took place in 1959. Others whisper, however, that a quiet midnight “reburial” also happened in 1975, after an inconvenient body turned up during work on the frontage street. Not surprisingly, a few ghost stories have circulated about the old cemetery. A professional musician who lived across the street claimed an apparition would sometimes appear as he practiced his cello. And a vacation-rental next door to the cemetery just might get a few ethereal visitors, too; renters sometimes don’t stay the full week they’ve paid for, neighbors say with a smile. In 1965, the Harootunian family thoughtfully deeded the property to the City of South Lake Tahoe to ensure the historic cemetery would be preserved. Unfortunately, that was the same year the City itself was incorporated. And the deed to the property apparently got lost in the shuffle. For the next fifty years, the City didn’t even realize that they owned the cemetery property. How to get there: Al Tahoe Pioneer Cemetery is located on Alameda Street in South Lake Tahoe. To find Alameda, look for Sprouts Restaurant at the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. Continue on Alameda 6-1/2 blocks; the cemetery will be on your left, sur-

Discovery of Electricity

Most folks believe that Ben Franklin discovered electricity with his famous kite experiment. Actually, a woman made that discovery possible. The real story was that Ben Franklin was laying in bed with his wife one night, leaned over and whispered something in her ear. She told him to go fly a kite. The rest is history.

Would it be right?

On his way out of church after mass, Frank stopped at the door to speak to the minister. “Would it be right,” he asked, “for a person to profit from the mistakes of another?” “Absolutely not!” replied the pastor, disappointed that Frank would even ask such a question. “In that case,” said the young man, “I wonder if you’d consider returning the hundred dollars I paid you to marry my wife and me last July.” KICHLER POLISH BRASS CHANDALIER, LIGHTING book, 5 lights 23”x23.5” main dish, 62” ext. height $105, Gardnerville (805)722-7667
