To all the seniors out there, and those who hope to get there: #1 – Talk to yourself, because there are times you need expert advice. #2 – Consider “In Style” to be the clothes that still fit. #3 – You don’t need anger management. You need people to stop p#$$ing you off. #4 – Your people skills are just fine. It’s your tolerance for idiots that needs work. #5 – The biggest lie you tell yourself is, “I don’t need to write that down. I’ll remember it.” #6 – You have days when your life is just a tent away from a circus. #7 – These days, “on time” is when you get there. #8 – Even duct tape can’t fix stupid – but it sure does muffle the sound. #9 – Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes, then come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller? #10 – Lately, You’ve noticed people your age are so much older than you. #11 – “Getting lucky” means walking into a room and remembering why you’re there. #12 – When you were a child, you thought nap time was punishment. Now it feels like a mini vacation. #13 – Some days you have no idea what you’re doing out of bed. #14 – You thought growing old would take longer. #15 – Aging sure has slowed you down, but it hasn’t shut you up. #16 – You still haven’t learned to act your age and hope you never will. Ex Wife

JJ finally decided to tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend. One evening, after their honeymoon, he was welding some stuff in the garage, just for fun. His new wife was standing there at the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally spoke. “Honey, I’ve just been thinking, now that we’re married, maybe it’s time you quit spending all your time out here in the shop. You probably should just consider selling all your welders along with your gun collection and that stupid vintage Harley.” JJ got a horrified look on his face. She said, “Darling, what’s wrong?” He replied, “There, for a minute, you were starting to sound like my ex-wife.” “Ex-wife!” she screamed, “YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU WERE MARRIED BEFORE!” JJ replied, “I wasn’t.” THOMAS J. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Wild, Crazy, Adventurous Life of Jonas Winchester

What’s in your cup?

You are holding a cup of coffee when someone comes along and bumps into you or shakes your arm, making you spill your coffee everywhere. Why did you spill the coffee? “Well because someone bumped into me, of course!” Wrong answer. You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup. Had there been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea. Whatever is inside the cup, is what will spill out. Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen), whatever is inside you will come out. It’s easy to fake it, until you get rattled. So we have to ask ourselves… “what’s in my cup?” When life gets tough, what spills over? Joy, gratefulness, peace and humility? Or anger, bitterness, harsh words and reactions? You choose! Today let’s work towards filling our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, joy… FOR SALE! MAYTAG GAS DRYER $100 (775)266-3627 ANTIQUE ARMOIRE $350 OBO; ANTIQUE Sideboard, can be used as dresser $850 OBO; Antique 78’s record player $175 OBO; Antique hay fork $500 OBO (775)315-0303

By Karen Dustman The year was 1871. Hope was in the air at the tiny mining town of Monitor, California. “General” Jonas Winchester and his wife had recently arrived from back East. And word was that the local Globe Gold & Silver Mine was finally going to be pushed in earnest. The title of “General” was apparently self-applied. Jonas had no military experience. But in addition to this confident title he also adopted an equally confident motto: “Push things.” And push he did! Advertising flyers screamed superlatives about the Globe’s prospects — its ores, they said, were “believed to be incalculable in quantity.” And best of all, they could supposedly be worked cheaply. Winchester claimed to have “invested all his own fortune in the business,” and intended “to reside permanently at Monitor.” But despite such bravado, things actually weren’t going terribly well for the Globe. It did have a mill, but its ore was yielding just $10 a ton. Workmen went unpaid, and both mill and mine were soon shut down. In April, 1871, Winchester candidly acknowledged there had been a bit “too much coyoteing” going on. A family feud may also have been part of the problem; Winchester complained bitterly about the “treachery” of a brother. The Globe’s mill also had barely escaped a devastating fire, he said, and there was a “need for re-organization of its finances.” Um, yeah. Prospects were looking gloomy indeed. By July, however, the mood switched from gloomy to gleeful. A rich copper vein had just been struck in the Globe, and there was “every indication of a mammoth copper ledge” just ahead. Early assays produced up to $75 in copper and $20 in silver, and ore containing 36% copper was said to have been found in the deeper levels. That summer, Winchester had one more cause for celebration: his third wife, Laura, presented him with a son on August 10, 1871, born there in Monitor. Continuing the work, of course, required another influx of capital. Winchester put his best literary skills to work in an 1872 prospectus, teasing investors with fabulous statistics. Capitalization of the company was now a rich $650,000. Progress thus far included a 5.5 x 6.5-foot double-tracked tunnel, “nearly” 1,500 feet long (a shameless exaggeration). Rail had been extended from the mine to an adjacent 45’ x 60’ mill, said to be almost ready to work the ore. “When finished,” that mill should be able to crush 40 tons of ore a day. A 30-horsepower engine and boiler had already been purchased, and 500 cords of wood were on hand. Hoisting works had been erected, and the company’s claims crossed “some half dozen or more veins.” The promised return for investors? “25% per annum in gold.” How could you go wrong?! But... by fall, the Globe again found itself unable to pay its bills. Again, Winchester’s glowing advertising evidently did the trick. Frank Winchester (a son by Jonas’s first marriage) arrived in Monitor in October with enough cash in hand to pay off the debts of the Globe. And, as an added sign of confidence, Frank signed a contract to extend the tunnel another 100 feet. Frank quickly departed for the East again, leaving

his father, “General” Winchester, behind at Monitor as mine superintendent. Winchester may have been a terrific mine promoter, but he apparently had little experience running a silver mine before. What he lacked in know-how, however, he made up for with bravado. On top of his naturally boisterous personality, Winchester was a firm follower of Spiritualism. He believed he had been personally chosen by the “Ancients” to run the Globe, and that the spirits would guide him to make the mine a success by speaking to him through mediums. The leaders of this spiritual band: an Atlantean named Yermah, and

Yermah’s wife, a towering six-foot “Queen” Azelia. Winchester went so far as to name his newborn son Yermah, and a subsequent daughter, born in September, 1873, after the spirit Queen. Opportunities for additional profit from his connection with the “Ancients” were not lost on Winchester, either. In early 1871, he acquired rights to a set of “spirit pictures” drawn by a pair of San Francisco mediums while in a trance. There was profit potential in selling the images, he was convinced. Despite the helpful advice of the “Ancients,” Continued...

Winchester’s stewardship of the Globe left much to be desired. One aggrieved investor concluded that Winchester’s “reckless and incompetent manner of doing business would prevent forever any success, no matter how rich or extensive the mine should prove.” Winchester was simply a “reckless spendthrift,” he said, notwithstanding his supposed selection “by the Ancients as the only man in the world” for the job. Winchester managed to push the Globe’s tunnel some 1,000 feet into the mountain, with several side-drifts. A steam furnace and boiler were installed in a separate building at the mouth of the tunnel, and steam was conducted in insulated pipes to an engine and pump located in an underground chamber. But despite the massive work done on the mine, the Globe’s 4” Cornish pump eventually proved unable to keep up with water flowing in. The boiler’s steam capacity also proved insufficient to work the pump and the hoist. By the end of 1873, work at the Globe was abandoned. As one mining report concluded, the Globe’s sad history had been one of “difficulties, delays, expenses, and disappointments.” Winchester and his family finally shook the dust of Monitor from their feet in November, 1873, and moved west to San Francisco. Winchester brought his “well-magnetized desk” to his new abode. Soon he was hawking those “spirit pictures” in a new “Spirit Art Gallery.” Those brought him about $6 a day in income — enough to cover costs, though not enough to cover a salary. Ever upbeat, he claimed he was simply happy to “re-enter upon civilized life.” So, just how did Jonas Winchester manage to get to Moni-

Feminist’s Fairytale!

Once upon a time, a beautiful, independent, self assured princess happened upon a frog in a pond. The frog said to the princess, “I was once a handsome prince until an evil witch put a spell on me. One kiss from you and I will turn back into a prince and then we can marry, move into the castle with my mom and you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children and forever feel happy doing so.” That night, while the princess dined on frog legs, she kept laughing and saying, “I don’t think so.” ROUND OAK DINING TABLE, ONE LEAF AND 6 chairs $150 OBO, Dayton (760)617-6322

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today. When I whine

Today, upon a bus, I saw a girl with golden hair. I looked at her and sighed and wished I was as fair. When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle. She had one leg and used a crutch. But as she passed, she passed a smile. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine I have 2 legs, the world is mine. I stopped to buy some candy, the lad who sold it had such charm. I talked with him a while, he seemed so very glad. If I were late, it’d do no harm. And as I left, he said to me, “I thank you, you’ve been so kind. It’s nice to talk with folks like you. You see,” he said, “I’m blind.” Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have 2 eyes, the world is mine. Later while walking down the street, I saw a child with eyes of blue, he stood and watched the others play, he did not know what to do. I stopped a moment and then I said, “Why don’t you join the others, dear?” He looked ahead without a word. And then I knew, he couldn’t hear. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have 2 ears, the world is mine. With feet to take me where I’d go. With eyes to see the sunset’s glow. With ears to hear what I would know. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I’ve been blessed indeed, The world is mine.

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Mistress

A husband and wife were having dinner at a very fine restaurant when an absolutely stunning young woman comes over to their table, gives the husband a big kiss, tells him she’ll see him later, and walks away. His wife glares at him and says, “Who was that?!” “Oh” replies the husband, “that was my mistress.” “That’s it,” says the wife, “I want a divorce.” “Ok,” replies her husband, “but remember, if you get a divorce there will be no more shopping trips to Paris, no wintering in the Caribbean, no Lexus in the garage, and no more country club. But, the decision is yours.” Just then the wife notices a mutual friend entering the restaurant with a gorgeous woman. “Who is that woman with Jim?” she asks. “That’s his mistress,” replies her husband. “Ours is much better looking.” says the wife. If my body were a car...

If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I’ve got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull. But that’s not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus and it’s especially hard to see things up close. My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins. It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently. But here’s the worst of it... Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter... either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires. QWERTY Keyboard

What does QWERTY mean? QWERTY is defined by the lexicographers at Oxford Dictionaries as Denoting the standard layout on English-language typewriters and keyboards, having q, w, e, r, t, and y as the first keys from the left on the top row of letters. There’s an old legend about the QWERTY keyboard, dating back to at least 1977: It “probably would have been chosen if the objective was to find the least efficient...character arrangement.” In fact, the layout was designed to help people type faster. The QWERTY layout is attributed to an American inventor named Christopher Latham Sholes, and it made its debut in its earliest form on July 1, 1874 -- 142 years ago today. Sholes had been for some years developing the typewriter, filing a patent application in October 1867. However, the original key layout, with the second half of the alphabet in order on the top row and the first half in order on the bottom row, led to some problems. The keys were mounted on metal arms, which would jam if the keys were pressed in too rapid succession. Sholes’ solution was separating commonly used letter pairings, such as “ST,” to avoid these jams, effectively allowing the typist to type faster, rather than slower. He went through several design iterations, attempting to bring the typewriter to market. When he sold the design to Remington in 1873, the QWERTY layout looked like this:

Top row: 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 - , Second row: Q W E . T Y I U O P Third row: Z S D F G H J K L M, Fourth row: A X & C V B N ? ; R. Remington made several adjustments, and launched the Sholes and Glidden typewriter on July 1, 1874. Its keyboard layout was almost the same QWERTY keyboard layout we use today, with a few minor differences. 1 and 0 were left out to help shave down production costs, on the basis that these numerals could be produced using other keys, such as a capital I and a capital O. Remington also swapped the R and . keys. The 0 was added fairly early on, but some keyboards well into the 1970s were still missing a 1. The first Remington typewriter sold poorly (it could only type in upper-case letters, was expensive at $125 per unit, and often broke). The updated Remington 2 typewriter, introduced in 1878, changed this. Not only did it remedy some of the defects of the Sholes and Glidden machine, the launch allowed Remington to sell the typewriter business to three former employees. Bringing marketing expertise to bear, the new Remington Standard Typewriter Company was able to bring the typewriter to commercial success. Ordering a cup of coffee

I pulled up to the drive-thru of a fast-food restaurant and ordered coffee. I asked the clerk to put some ice cubes into the cup so that I could drink the cool coffee quickly. At the window, there was a delay. Finally, the clerk came to the window looking frustrated, and announced, “I’m having a problem. The ice keeps melting.”

“Welcome to Nevada” tidbits

Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other Lower 48 states. With over 300 ranges and 57 peaks topping 11,000 feet, Nevada’s home to thousands of miles of hiking trails. And its highest point, the 13,145ft Boundary Peak, is only a half mile from the California border along Highway 6, making it an easy-to-reach objective for hikers. Well, okay, it’ll seem easy till you actually get on the mountain and see you’re in for a ton of scree scrambles. Never say “Nuh-vahd-uh.”It’s “Ne-VAD-uh” (where “vad” rhymes with “rad”). Locals are very picky about this. Make a friend and pronounce it correctly! The Las Vegas Strip packs a lot into 4.2 miles — more than you probably know. Including 62,000 hotel rooms, 15,000 miles of lighted neon tubing, 17,700 people walking around at any given time, and the world’s tallest Ferris wheel — the 550ft High Roller, which is so high that Big Ben would have to be propped on top of the London Eye for the British equivalent to reach the same height. Great Basin National Park has some of the darkest night skies anywhere in the US. By day, this surreal national park is 77,180 acres of sharp peaks, ice-sculpted valleys, and 3,000-year-old bristlecone pines. By clear, moonless night, meteors and star clusters, the Andromeda Galaxy, and the full majesty of the Milky Way can all be seen with the naked eye. Go now, because by 2025 it’s predicted that no dark skies will remain in the continental US. If you think of Reno as just another Nevada city to gamble in, some kind of ‘runner-up’ to Vegas, as it were, you don’t know Reno. In recent years, the MidTown District — a slice of city just south of the Truckee River and downtown — has remade itself into a hip collection of bars, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, and live music venues that have redefined what it means to live and play in Reno. It may be 10 minutes from the oldest continually running casino in the state — Railroad Pass Casino — but Boulder City is one of only two towns in Nevada that forbids gambling. Designed in 1931 as a model community for workers at the nearby Hoover Dam, the law against gambling was all part of a plan to create a clean-living environment where residents wouldn’t end up losing all their hard-earned cash at the slots. Even today, just organizing a raffle requires a permit. Las Vegas sees more than 300 weddings a day. That’s 115,000 marriages a year. Given the entire Vegas population is 603,488 people, you can bet your last chip that a ton of those newlyweds are Californians making the most of $60 marriage licenses and no waiting period. But it’s not all Elvis-ordained quickies. Ceremonies take place surrounded by Mount Charleston’s snow and pine trees; among the glowing 500 million-year-old sandstone of Red Rock Canyon; by the sheer, rippling rock faces of the 277-mile-long, Oh-my-GodI-can’t-believe-I’m-really-here Grand Canyon; at Burning Man… You can swap UFO-sighting stories in Rachel. Population 100, Rachel is the closest town to Area 51, where alien spacecrafts are rumored to be studied by the government. Perhaps more enticingly, Continued...

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”

Rachel’s remote location makes for incredibly clear night skies, and the surrounding desert is dotted with petroglyphs and ghost towns. There’s world-class fly fishing just over the border. If you’re an angler with an eye for trout, post up in the eastern Sierra and take your pick of some of the best fly fishing spots anywhere. The Truckee River continually produces the biggest trout you’ll find south of Alaska. The nearby Carson River, is home to the rare Pauite Cutthroat. And then you’ve got Pyramid Lake, where a 1925 catch by Johnny Skimmerhorn set the world record — his Lahontan cutthroat, a fine specimen of Nevada’s state fish, weighed in at 41 pounds. A few examples as to why the English language is so hard to learn

The bandage was wound around the wound. The farm was used to produce produce. The dump was so full it had to refuse more refuse. We must polish the Polish furniture. He could lead if he would get the lead out. The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert. Since there was no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present. A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. I did not object to the object. The insurance was invalid for the invalid. There was a row among the oarsmen on how to row. They were too close to the door to close it. The buck does funny things when does are present. A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line. To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. The wind was too strong to wind the sail. After a number of injections my jaw got number. Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear. A Pious Old Man

A pious man, who had reached the age of 105, suddenly stopped going to synagogue. Alarmed by the old fellow’s absence after so many years of faithful attendance, the Rabbi went to see him. He found him in excellent health, so the Rabbi asked, “How come after all these years we don’t see you at services anymore?” The old man lowered his voice. “I’ll tell you, Rabbi,” he whispered. “When I got to be 90, I expected God to take me any day. But then I got to be 95, then 100, then 105. So, I figured that God is very busy and must’ve forgotten about me, and I don’t want to remind Him!” HELP! What is a Caucus?

The term caucus generally means a meeting of political party members to discuss or debate what they stand for and to figure out who will represent them in the upcoming election. The most widely known caucus in the United States is the first in the nation Iowa caucuses that occur every 4 years to select the presidential nominee for the party. One way you can think of caucuses is to think of a set of meetings. Basically, party members meet to jointly pick their candidates for an election, but they do this by selecting delegates - people who will go to the national convention and cast their votes for a candidate. During this time there may be debate, agreement, arguments, or any other form of negotiation before delegates are selected that will ultimately vote for a candidate. In the case of the Iowa caucuses, there are 99 different counties that each have a meeting at the same time to decide how the delegates will vote, which is rolled up to the state level until a decision has been made. Unlike a primary which feels much more like a general election, a caucus is a bit more chaotic and may require some negotiation to resolve.
