“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Story of Life
Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson, or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be (possibly your roommate, neighbor, coworker, long lost friend, lover, or even a complete stranger) but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment that they will affect your life in some profound way. And sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful, and unfair at first, but in reflection you find that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realized your potential, strength, willpower, or heart. Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of luck. Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless. The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and downfalls you experience help to create who you become. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones. If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious when you open your heart. If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things. Make every day count!!! Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and actually listen. Let yourself fall in love, break free, and set your sights high. Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don’t believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in you. You can make of your life anything you wish. Create your own life then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets. WEEKLY LAWN CARE, DETHATCH AND AERATION, 15+ years experience, quality service, serving Carson Valley, Carson Valley Lawn Care, Insured (775)230-2546 WANTED WILL PAY CASH FOR HATS - Cowboy, Fedora, Panama etc. (775)762-2220 2015 POLARIS RANGER 900XP WITH 1/2 FRONT windshield and rear window $9,000 OBO (775)790-3800

Her Name was Rhonda
She was a big girl, with bulging brown, almost black eyes, a few chicken pox scars on her face and a prominent overbite. Growing up in the ‘60s my family lived in a quaint little neighborhood in La Mirada, CA. Our streets were not nearly as wide as most are today so when you walked out your front door, you were easily visible to the neighbors. Across the street from our little home, sort of kittycorner lived the family of Ron (father), Bubs (moms nickname) and their three kids; Rhonda, Ronny, and Googey (youngest daughter nickname). Rhonda was about my age, her brother, about my sister’s age and Googey, about the age of my brother. For a moment in my childhood, which seemed like a lifetime then, I was bullied by Rhonda. She didn’t intimidate any other kid in our neighborhood but me, Lisa. She just did not LIKE ME at all, and she did everything she could to terrify me at home and school. I was so afraid of her that to this day I can remember having to crawl on my hands and knees past her elementary classroom windows just to get to the girls’ bathroom without her seeing me. I was always terrified she would trap me in the bathroom. One time she did. She didn’t physically harm me, but she threatened to beat me up after school, so I always ran home nearly every day. It seemed like I was always running and always watch-
ing my backside for Rhonda. I was terrified at home in our neighborhood too. I remember making sure, before I walked out our front door, to peek out the front window to make sure Rhonda wasn’t hiding in the bushes (as she would sometimes do) or outside and about in her front yard. There were times when she would find me playing with friends down the street, and she would chase me all the way home. I would run up my driveway and open that screen door as quickly as I could to escape. I think my parents did talk to her parents about the problem. Rhonda would stop bullying me for a while but then start up again. I don’t recall how long she terrified me. As I look back on it today, it seems like it was an eternity. Rhonda was a frightening experience for me, but through it all, I believe she taught me some life skills that I use to this day. 1. I learned to be fast on my feet, which proved to be a benefit in all athletic endeavors. 2. I learned to watch my back. 3. I learned to be a stronger person. 4. I learned to face my fears, not run from them. 5. Most importantly, I learned that whatever good or bad experiences may come our way, we can always give them meaning and transform them all into something of value. If I RAN into Rhonda today, I believe I would thank her for choosing me to bully! (Lisa, Minden)

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Legacy of Roy Thran
By Karen Dustman, Woodfords, CA A ten-year-old boy. A small box of his most prized possessions. And 83 years later -- a very special legacy shared. Born June 10, 1925, Roy Thran was the last of five surviving children of Dick and Marie Thran. Roy’s mother, Marie was 48 years old when he was born, and had already lost three other intervening children. So Roy’s arrival must have been a time of great rejoicing. He was christened in the Lutheran Church on Sunday, June 21, 1925. Roy did his lessons on a slate at the Minden School. He caught butterflies, played with metal trucks, dabbled with paints, and enjoyed games of marbles and Tiddledy Winks with friends. Someone (perhaps his father) carved him his very own wooden baseball bat. No doubt he had chores to do at the family’s dairy ranch on Dressler Lane. And even as a ten-year-old, he kept a stained and much-battered stuffed toy he’d carried in his toddler days. Smitten with the great aviators of the day, Roy joined the Jimmy Allen Flying Club for kids, receiving an official acceptance letter, a silver pilot’s bracelet, and a bronze pin with “flying cadet” wings. Roy even owned his own pintsized version of the aviator cap worn by Charles Lindbergh on his history-making solo across the Atlantic in 1927. christened in the Lutheran Church on Sunday, June 21, 1925. continued....

Roy celebrated his tenth birthday that summer of 1935. His beloved Tante Behrman, his mother’s sister, wished him “more fun than a circus” in a cheerful birthday card. But according to a story handed down through the family, Roy’s mother, Marie, had an awful premonition. As she glanced at Roy one day, chilling words formed across his forehead: “I won’t be here long.” And not long after the vision, Roy’s family was attending his funeral at the same Lutheran Church where he’d been christened. On August 6, Roy had gone to visit a childhood chum. They took a leisurely ride on a horse, and grabbed a late lunch, and decided to take a dip in the West Fork in the late afternoon. They rode out to a spot at a dam near the Schwake Ranch. The water was deep, and neither boy could swim. Roy stepped off the bank into the cool water -- and disappeared. Roy’s young friend rode quickly for help. But by the time Roy’s body was recovered, it was too late. Two doctors tried in vain for several hours to revive him. Imagine Marie’s grief: her premonition had come true. Carefully, she packed away all of Roy’s treasures: his aviator cap, his school books, his slingshot, his birthday card. A butterfly pressed in the leaves of a book. It all was gently tucked in a special box, handed down through the family for the last 83 years. And now, with the family’s permission, Roy’s treasures
are being shared with the community in a very special exhibit at the Carson Valley Museum. Two glass cases display the loves of a ten-year-old boy growing up in 1935, preserved just as he left them. It’s an amazing snapshot in time. “So many people were touched with sadness back then, and now this journey will come full-circle,” notes Krista Jenkins, a Thran descendant. “The sadness will be different now. Memories have softened with the passing of time, and it’s nice to know that this journey of the ‘Boy In A Box’ will now be told again to a different generation.” Come View Roy’s Special Legacy: The Roy Thran exhibit is currently on display at Carson Valley Historical Society & Museum through the end of 2019, in the “Women’s History” room, located on the second floor. Special thanks to Krista Jenkins and the Thran and Cordes families for sharing Roy’s amazing legacy. Karen Dustman’s books and more tales about Sierra history are available at www.Clairitage.com. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Miracle Worker...
Two guys and a union worker were fishing on a lake one day, when Jesus walked across the water and joined them in the boat. When the three astonished men had settled down enough to speak, the first guy asked, humbly, “Jesus, I’ve suffered from back pain ever since I took shrapnel in the Vietnam War...could you help me?” “Of course, my son,” Jesus said, and when he touched the man’s back, he felt relief for the first time in years. The second man, who wore very thick glasses and had a hard time reading and driving, asked if Jesus could do anything about his eyesight. Jesus smiled, removed the man’s glasses and tossed them in the lake. When they hit the water, the man’s eyes cleared, and he could see everything distinctly. When Jesus turned to heal the union worker, the guy put his hands up and cried, defensively, “DON’T TOUCH ME! While I was in his office, I asked him, “Sir, what is the secret of your success?” He said, “Two words.” “And, Sir, what are they?” “Right decisions.” “But how do you make right decisions?” “One word,” he responded. “And, Sir, what is that?” “Experience.” “And how do you get experience?” “Two words.” “And, Sir what are they?” “Wrong decisions.” SMITH VALLEY IRRIGATION – SERVING NEVADA and Sierra Communities for 40 Years with Ag Irrigation Systems and Parts (775)465-2316 7 PIECE KING SIZE BEDROOM SET, WALNUT with Burl Inlay, lots of oriental pieces, call for pricing (775)267-3867

A Letter from Heaven
Sally jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She asked, “How is my little boy? Is he going to be OK? When can I see him?” The surgeon said, “I’m sorry. We did all we could.” Why God? Why? Grief stricken, Sally asked, “Why do little children get cancer? How can their story end there? Doesn’t God care anymore? God, where were you when my son needed you?” The Surgeon said, “One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes to let you spend time with your son’s remains before he is transported to the University.” Sally asked that the nurse stay with her while she said good-bye to her son. She ran her fingers through the thick, red, curly hair. The nurse asked, “Would you like to keep a lock of his hair,” to which Sally replied, “Yes, please.” The nurse gently cut the lock of hair, placed it in a plastic bag, and handed it to Sally. Sally said, “It was Jimmy’s idea to give his body to the university for study. He said it might help somebody else and that is what he wanted. I said no at first, but Jimmy said, ‘Mom, I won’t be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his mother.’ My Jimmy had a heart of gold, always thinking about
18
someone else and wanting to help others if he could.” Sally walked out of the Children’s Hospital for the last time, after spending most of the last 6 months there. She set the bag with Jimmy’s things on the seat beside her in the car. The drive home was hard and it was even harder to go into an empty house. She took the bag to Jimmy’s room and started placing his model cars and things back where he always kept them when he wasn’t playing with them. She laid down across his bed and cried herself to sleep holding his pillow. Sally woke up about midnight and laying beside her on the bed was a letter, folded neatly, she opened it and read: “Dear Mom, I know you’re going to miss me, but don’t think that I will ever forget you or stop loving you just because I’m not around to say ‘I Love You.’ I’ll think of you every day, Mom, and I’ll love you even more each day. Some day we will see each other again. If you want to adopt a little boy so you won’t be so lonely, he can have my room and my stuff to play with. If you decide to get a girl instead, she probably won’t like the same things as boys do, so you will have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like. Don’t be sad when you think about me. This is really a great place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything here.

The angels are so friendly. I love to watch them fly. Jesus doesn’t look like any of the pictures I have seen of him down there ... He took me to see God, and guess what, Mom? I got to sit on God’s knee and talk to Him like I was somebody important. I told Him that I wanted to write you a letter and tell you good-bye and everything, but knew that wasn’t allowed. God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter with. I think Gabriel is the name of the angel that is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you
asked about where was He when I needed Him. God said - the same place He was when Jesus was on the cross which was right there as He always is with His children. Oh, by the way, Mom, nobody else can see what is written on this paper but you. To everyone else it looks like a blank piece of paper. I have to give God His pen back now. He has some more names to write in The Book of Life. Tonight, I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I’m sure the food will be great. Continued on next page...

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” So, you want a day off…
An employee comes into her manager’s office to take a day off from work. The manager replies, “So you want a day off. Let’s take a look at what you are asking for. There are 365 days per year available for work. There are 52 weeks per year in which you already have 2 days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work. Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work, you have used up 170 days, leaving only 91 days available. You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee break, which counts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Getting the Children Ready
During the cold winter a family was preparing to go out for an evening activity. The wife, who was normally bustling about getting the children ready to leave, was this evening instead standing right inside the front door, her arms full of coats. And instead of being prepared to leave, her four small children were busy running circles around her playing one of their non-stop games of tag. Her husband, coming down the stairs, was shocked at the spectacle. “Honey,” he said, “What are you doing just standing there? We’ll be late!” “Here,” his wife replied, handing him the coats with a smug smile, “I thought that this time you would like to have the privilege of putting the children into their coats, while I go and honk the horn.” JAMES A. How Green Became Associated with St. Patrick’s Day, etc.
On St. Patrick’s Day, everyone is seeing green - whether it’s the green Chicago River, green beer, green milkshakes or green clothing and bead necklaces. Many might believe that the Emerald Isle and the color green are linked because of the country’s verdant landscape, but the association actually traces its roots to Irish political history. In fact, blue is believed to have been associated with Ireland before green was. Henry the VIII claimed to be king of Ireland in the 16th century, and his flag at that point would have been blue. That’s at least one reason why a blue flag with a harp is associated with the Irish President. (The harp is one of the two main symbols of Ireland, along with the Shamrock, and it dates back to the bards whose songs and stories were the chief entertainment in medieval Gaelic society.) A light blue became associated with the Order of St. Patrick, an 18th century era order of knights, perhaps to create a shade of blue for the Irish that was different from the royal blue associated with the English, says Timothy McMahon, Vice President of the American Conference for Irish Studies. McMahon argues the earliest use of green for nationalistic reasons was seen during the violent Great Irish Rebellion of 1641, in which displaced Catholic landowners and bishops rebelled against the authority of the English crown, which had established a large plantation in the north of Ireland under King James I in the early 17th century. Military commander Owen Roe O’Neill helped lead the rebellion, and used a green flag with a harp to represent the Confederation of Kilkenny, a group that sought to govern Ireland and kick out the Protestants who had taken control of that land in the north of Ireland. (They were ultimately defeated by Oliver Cromwell.)
