At the height of her power in the 1940s and 1950s, gossip columnist Hedda Hopper had so much clout she could ruin a career with a few vicious sentences. That she hid under hats so flamboyant they bordered on parody only enhanced her mystique. Born Elda Furry in 1890 in Pennsylvania, one of nine children in a Quaker family, she ran away from home at age 18 when her parents rejected her ambition to pursue a life in theater. Elda made her Broadway debut in 1909. In 1913 she starred opposite matinee idol DeWolf Hopper, whom she shortly thereafter married. (She was his fifth wife, and the marriage wouldn’t survive a decade. The two had one son, William DeWolf Hopper Jr., who would later appear on The Perry Mason Show.) Elda Hopper changed her name to Hedda in 1919, and appeared in more than 100 films over the next three decades, often playing society women. A contract actor in an era when stars paid for their own costumes, she spent her $5,000 salary on her wardrobe for one of her earliest screen roles, effectively upstaging the star. The move was calculated to attract attention, and it worked. “Producers who didn’t know my name began to say, ‘Get what’s her name who played the rich woman in Virtuous Wives. She’ll dress this,’ ” Hopper wrote in her memoir From Under My Hat. By the mid-1930s, her motion-picture career had slumped, but her anachronistic sense of style had landed her gigs with a cosmetics firm and as a fashion commentator for radio. Casting about for a new income source, she began writing a gossip column in 1937. When Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood debuted in the Los Angeles Times, on February 4, 1938, her popularity skyrocketed. Her column appeared in 30 metro dailies, 3,000 small-town papers, and 2,000 weeklies, according to Biography.com. When it was picked up by the New York Daily News, her readership grew to the millions, eclipsing that of any other gossip columnist, including Louella Parsons, whose friendship had devolved into a bitter rivalry. Hedda Hopper outfitted herself in wildly creative hats to hobnob with Hollywood’s rich and famous. She reportedly bought 150 hats a year. “Flamboyance was her gimmick,” Daniel Orlandi told the New York Times in 2015. Orlandi was the costume designer of Trumbo, a biopic about Hollywood’s blacklisting era, in which Helen Mirren played Hedda Hopper. “She wasn’t stylish, she was eccentric. Her wardrobe may have made her more likable and less threatening. It was, ‘I’m your eccentric auntie.’ ” Her distinctive style was a façade to hide behind, a distraction that allowed her to get close to her subjects. It turned her into a brand and also “aided her success in marketing multiple commodities: her column, her reading public, and, most important for the industry she loved, Hollywood,” as Jennifer Frost wrote in Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood: Celebrity Gossip and American Conservatism. Hedda Hopper was hard-working, competitive, and scathing. She was not afraid to use her poison pen to go after Hollywood’s most beloved stars. She wrote a blind item about Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy’s long time affair, infuriating Hepburn. She lambasted Charlie Chaplin’s queasy-making relationships with young

women so vigorously that it reportedly contributed to his being denied re-entry to the U.S. She bought a house in Hollywood Hills and called it “The House That Fear Built.” Hopper was equally militant about “American values.” An ardent supporter of the House Un-American Activities Committee, she spoke out against the threat of communism in Hollywood. She didn’t hesitate to name names, landing people on the notorious Black List, destroying reputations and careers. Hedda Hopper remained active as a writer - and as a wearer of outrageous oversized hats - until her death, producing six daily columns and a syndicated Sunday column as well as writing articles for celebrity magazines such as Photoplay. A little history about Flag Day

It’s tough being a holiday in June. Just ask Flag Day. Between Memorial Day and July 4th, people are out and about, vacationing, ending classes, and celebrating the beginning of summer. Nobody has time to pay the ol’ Red, White, and Blue any mind. June 14th marks more than just the middle of June. On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. They “resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.” This is the flag that was reportedly sewn by Betsy Ross in Philadelphia. The well known naval lieutenant John Paul Jones was the first to display the new American flag overseas in France in 1778. However Flag Day didn’t become a holiday overnight. It took well over one hundred years before Flag Day was formally recognized. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing Flag Day on June 14. (This same year Wilson also declared, by executive order, that the Star Spangled Banner be played at military and other official ceremonies.) But it wasn’t until 1949 that Congressional legislation designating a national Flag Day was passed and was recognized by President Harry Truman. Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin grade school teacher, is often credited with the first Flag Day celebration in 1885. William T. Kerr, of Pittsburgh, formed an American Flag Day As-

sociation of Western Pennsylvania in 1888, and was a leader in establishing the National American Flag Day Association in 1898. Kerr served as president of the association for more than fifty years and he participated in the August 3, 1949 ceremony with President Truman. 10 things you may not know about the penny

1. The word “penny” and its variations across Europe— including the German “pfennig” and the Swedish “penning”— originally denoted any sort of coin or money, not just a small denomination. 2. Offa, an Anglo-Saxon king, introduced the first English coin known as the penny around 790 A.D.; it was made entirely of silver. Today’s British pennies (called “pence” when referring to a quantity of money) are worth one hundredth of a pound and minted in copper-plated steel. 3. The official term for the American penny is “one-cent piece.” However, when the U.S. Mint struck its first one-cent coins—then the size of today’s half-dollars and 100-percent copper—in 1793, Americans continued to use the British term out of habit. 4. Benjamin Franklin reportedly designed the first American penny in 1787. Known as the Fugio cent, it bears the image of a sun and sundial above the message “Mind Your Business.” A chain with 13 links, each representing one of the original colonies, encircles the motto “We Are One” on the reverse. 5. Along with the first U.S. penny’s design, the phrase “a penny saved is a penny earned” has been attributed to Benjamin Franklin. Visitors to the founding father’s grave in Philadelphia traditionally leave one-cent pieces there for good luck. 6. The copper content of U.S. pennies has declined over the years due to rising prices. The expensive metal makes up just

2.5 percent of one-cent pieces minted in 1982 or later; nickels, dimes and quarters, on the other hand, are mainly composed of copper. Still, today’s pennies cost more than their face value— an estimated 1.8 cents each—to produce. 7. In 1909, Teddy Roosevelt introduced the Lincoln cent to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the 16th U.S. president’s birth. At the time, it was the first American coin to feature the likeness of an actual person (as opposed to the personifications of “liberty” appearing on earlier designs). Fifty years later the Lincoln Memorial was added to the penny’s reverse, complete with a tiny representation of the statue within. 8. The image of Abraham Lincoln on today’s American pennies was designed by Victor David Brenner, an acclaimed medalist who emigrated to the United States from Lithuania in 1890. Born Viktoras Barnauskas, Brenner had fled his native land after being persecuted for his Jewish ancestry. 9. As copper supplies became vital to weapons manufacturing during World War II, the U.S. Mint decided to cast the 1943 penny in zinc-coated steel. Nicknamed “steelies,” these coins caused confusion because they closely resembled dimes; they also rusted and deteriorated quickly. 10. In the 1980s, U.S. military bases overseas abolished the penny and began rounding all transactions up or down to the nearest five cents. This is the system Canada plans to implement later this year. Bite the bullet - Meaning: To accept something difficult or unpleasant. Origin: In the olden days, when doctors were short on anesthesia or time during a battle, they would ask the patient to bite down on a bullet to distract from the pain. The first recorded use of the phrase was in 1891 in The Light that Failed. Break the ice - Meaning: To break off a conflict or commence a friendship. Origin: Back when road transportation was not developed, ships would be the only transportation and means of trade. At times, the ships would get stuck during the winter because of ice formation. The receiving country would send small ships to “break the ice” to clear a way for the trade ships. This gesture showed affiliation and understanding between two territories. Butter someone up - Meaning: To impress someone with flattery. Origin: This was a customary religious act in ancient India. The devout would throw butter balls at the statues of their gods to seek favor and forgiveness. Mad as a hatter - Meaning: To be completely crazy. Origin: No, you didn’t already know this one, because it didn’t originate from Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Its origins date from the 17th and 18th centuries — well before Lewis Caroll’s book was published. In 17th century France, poisoning occurred among hat makers who used mercury for the hat felt. The “Mad Hatter Disease” was marked by shyness, irritability, and tremors that would make the person appear “mad.” Cat got your tongue? - Meaning: Asked to a person who is at loss of words. Origin: The English Navy used to use a whip called “Cat-o’nine-tails” for flogging. The pain was so severe that it caused the victim to stay quiet for a long time. Another possible source could be from ancient Egypt, where liars’ and blasphemers’ tongues were cut out and fed to the cats. (What a treat for the cats!) Barking up the wrong tree - Meaning: To have misguided thoughts about an event or situation, a false lead. Origin: This refers to hunting dogs that may have chased their prey up a tree. The dogs bark, assuming that the prey is still in the tree, when the prey is no longer there. Turn a blind eye - Meaning: To ignore situations, facts, or reality. Origin: The British Naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, had one blind eye. Once when the British forces signaled for him to stop attacking a fleet of Danish ships, he held up a telescope to his blind eye and said, “I do not see the signal.” He attacked, nevertheless, and was victorious. Bury the hatchet - Meaning: To stop a conflict and make peace. Origins: This one dates back to the early times North America when the Puritans were in conflict with the Native Americans. When negotiating peace, the Native Americans would bury all their hatchets, knives, clubs, and tomahawks. Weapons literally were buried and made inaccessible. Caught red-handed - Meaning: To be caught in the act of doing something wrong. Origin: This originates from an old English law that ordered any person to be punished for butchering an animal that wasn’t

his own. The only way the person could be convicted is if he was caught with the animal’s blood still on his hands. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater - Meaning: Don’t get rid of valuable things along with the unnecessary ones. Origin: You won’t believe this one! In the early 1500s, people only bathed once a year. Not only that, but they also bathed in the same water without changing it! The adult males would bath first, then the females, leaving the children and babies to go last. By the time the babies got in, the water was clouded with filth. The poor mothers had to take extra care that their babies were not thrown out with the bathwater. Give a cold shoulder - Meaning: Being unwelcoming or antisocial toward someone. Origin: In medieval England, it was customary to give a guest a cold piece of meat from the shoulder of mutton, pork, or beef chop when the host felt it was time for the guest to leave. This was a polite way to communicate, “You may leave, now.” Go the whole nine yards - Meaning: To try your best at something. Origin: During World War II, the fighter pilots were equipped with nine yards of ammunition. When they ran out, it meant that they had tried their best at fighting off the target with the entirety of their ammunition. Rub the wrong way - Meaning: To bother or annoy someone. Origin: Early Americans, during the colonial times, would ask their servants to rub their oak floorboards “the right way”. The wrong way (not wiping them with dry fabric after wet fabric) would cause streaks to form and ruin it, leaving the

Many people believe that it’s OK to drink and drive because they are responsible people. But the truth is, getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol can have devastating consequences for those around you, as well as yourself. Drinking and driving can have severe impacts on not just your safety but also others—from minor injuries to severe injuries to fines to jail time to death. Too many people believe in the fallacy of immunity that it can’t happen to them. Even if you’ve never had an accident because of drunken driving, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t responsible for other people’s lives when you drink and drive. The statistics about drunken driving deaths highlight the seriousness of this dangerous behavior. Drunken driving accounts for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the U.S. In a recent year, over 230 children were killed in drunk-driving crashes. Each day, approximately 28 people are killed in the United States in drunk-driving accidents. There were 10,142 alcohol-impaired driving deaths in 2019, which made up 28% of overall driving fatalities. With Viagra being such a hit, Pfizer, pharmaceutical company, is bringing forth a whole line of drugs oriented towards improving the performance of men in today’s society. DIRECTRA - A dose of this drug given to men before leaving on car trips caused 72 percent of them to stop and ask for directions when they got lost compared to a control group where only 0.2 percent asked for directions. Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world- weary pundit eager to pontificate on life to young people who’d rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there’s no reason we can’t entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates. I encourage anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt. Ladies and gentlemen of the class of ‘2022: Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they’ve faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine. Don’t worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing every day that scares you. Sing. Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours. Floss. Don’t waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind. The race is long and, in the end, it’s only with yourself. Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements. Stretch. Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn’t know at your age what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don’t. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You’ll miss them when they’re gone. Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own. Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents. You never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They’re your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few

you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you’ll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out. Don’t mess too much with your hair or by the time you’re 40 it will look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth. But trust me on the sunscreen. VFW Breakfast
