The rainbow is a beautiful natural phenomenon; knowing the significance of each of the colors of the rainbow makes it even more beautiful. While Nature or God has created this glorious natural phenomenon; philosophers have given a meaning to its colors. Every rainbow has seven colors beginning with red and ending with violet or purple. To remember the order of these colors, people use the acronym ROY G. BIV or VIBGYOR which stands for Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo and Violet. Red– This is the first color of the rainbow from top. Red signifies passion, vitality, enthusiasm and security. It is the light with the longest wavelength. Orange– This light or color is a combination of yellow and red. It is a dynamic color representing creativity, practicality, playfulness as well as equilibrium or control. Yellow– This is the color of the sunshine itself. It represents clarity of thought, wisdom, orderliness and energy. Green– This is the middle color of the rainbow and denotes fertility, growth, balance, health and wealth. Blue– This the fifth color of the rainbow which makes us think of the Unknown. The sky and the wide oceans are in this color and hence it has been associated with Spirituality and Divinity. Indigo– It is believed that where Blue is calming, Indigo is sedating. Indigo is mystical as it bridges the Gap between Finite and Infinite. Indigo colored gem stones are often used for spiritual attainment, psychic abilities, self awareness and enhancement of Intuition. Violet– The last color of the rainbow is a mix of red and blue. It is considered the highest element of spirituality. It can ignite one’s imagination and be an inspiration to artists. Dark tones of violet are associated with sorrow. Deeper shades of violet or purple denote high spiritual mastery. PERFECTO GARDENING SERVICES, SERVING Carson Valley over 20 Years! St. Gall Columbarium

The Memorial Garden was created for the community to worship, mediate and memorialize deceased family members. A Dream Becomes a Reality… Several years ago, the Memorial Prayer Garden was just a dream. A few parishioners talking and setting a vision for others to enjoy God’s beauty of his creation in this valley. The seed of faith was planted and nurtured and has grown to a reality. The people at St. Gall truly believe “with faith…all things are possible.” Our Columbarium is available to people of all Christian faiths, whether a funeral or memorial service is held at St. Gall’s. Depending on scheduling and guidelines, it is possible to arrange an inurnment prayer service with a member of St. Gall’s clergy. Cremation has been preserved since ancient times and it’s consistent with Christian teaching and practice. Inurnment in the wall niche is a permanent memorial and a remembrance of your loved ones. Human eye color is determined by two factors - the pigmentation of the iris and the way the iris scatters the light passing through it. Genes dictate how much melanin will be present in the eye. The more the melanin, the darker the eye. However, it might seem that in some individuals, their eye color tends to change depending on the amount of light present. This is because of the double layer of iris present in the eye. The color depends on which layer reflects the light. Approximately 79% of the world’s population has brown eyes, which makes it the most common eye color in the world. After brown, 8%-10% of the world has blue eyes, 5% has amber or hazel eyes, and 2% of the world has green eyes. Rarer colored eyes include gray and red/violet. Brown Eyes - The brown iris is determined by its pigmentation, and can either appear as dark brown or light brown. The former results from a high concentration of melanin and is common in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa. The light brown iris occurs due to a low level of melanin in the iris and is common in Europe, West Asia, and the Americas. The pigmentation of the eye is passed from parents to offspring through genetics. However, parents with brown eye color will not necessarily produce offspring with brown eye color as the variation of genes can result in another eye color. Blue Eyes - Approximately 8% to 10% of the world has blue eyes. There is no blue pigmentation in the eye of blue-eyed people. Instead, the melanin content of iris is very low. Research conducted by the University of Copenhagen in 2008 revealed that a genetic mutation that occurred about 10,000 years ago led to the blue eye and that a gene that prevents the production of melanin in the eye could be passed genetically. Europe accounts for the largest percentage of people with blue eyes. Finland tops the list of countries with the largest percentage of blue-eyed people. Hazel Eyes - About 5% of the world has hazel eyes. The hazel color occurs due to the combination of melanin and the Rayleigh scattering of the light. Hazel eyes seem to change color from green to brown and blue. In some cases, the differences in light refraction may result in a multicolored iris where the dominant color depends on the wavelength of the light entering the eye. Amber Eyes - About 5% of the world has amber eyes. The amber color occurs due to the presence of a yellow pigment known as lipochrome. This makes the iris portray a russet/coppery tint and a yellowish/golden color that may sometimes be confused with the hazel color. Although it is uncommon in humans, it is common in birds, fish, and canines. Green Eyes - Only about 2% of the world’s population has green eyes. Low levels of melanin, the presence of a yellowish pigment called lipochrome, and a blue shade caused by Rayleigh scattering of reflected light act together to result in green eye color. People with green eyes are found in Central, Western, and Northern Europe. Gray Eyes - Gray eyes are sometimes confused with light blue eyes. A low level of melanin in the front layer of the iris leads to gray eyes. The color is due to the Mie scattering of light off

the darker epithelium. Gray eyes are most commonly found in Northern and Eastern Europe. Red/Violet Eyes - People with severe forms of albinism often have violet or red eyes. This is caused by the extremely low levels of melanin which allows the blood vessels to show through. The rate of occurrence of red/violet eyes is extremely rare.

Closing Time

One night, a police officer was stalking out a particularly rowdy bar for possible violations of the driving under the influence laws. At closing time, he saw a fellow stumble out of the bar, trip on the curb, and try his keys on five different cars before he found his. Then, sat in the front seat fumbling around with his keys for several minutes. Everyone left the bar and drove off. Finally, he started his engine and began to pull away. The police officer was waiting for him. He stopped the driver, read him his rights and administered the Breathalyzer test. The results showed a reading of 0.0. The puzzled officer demanded to know how that could be. The driver replied, “Tonight, I’m the Designated Decoy.” BLIND AND WINDOW CLEANING SERVICES, residential and commercial, multi story specialist, mobile blind cleaning, pressure washing, awning cleaning, snow removal, Call Unlimited for a clear view! When we look back on our lives, we see that we have survived many trials, and often to our own amazement. We have all faced moments in our lives when the pressure mounts beyond what we feel we can handle, and we find ourselves thinking that we do not have the strength to carry on. Sometimes we have just gotten through a major obstacle or illness only to find another one waiting for us the moment we finally catch our breath. Sometimes we endure one loss after another, wondering when we will get a break from life’s travails. It does not seem fair or right that life should demand more of us when we feel we have given all we can, but sometimes this is the way life works. When we look back on our lives, we see that we have survived many trials and surmounted many obstacles, often to our own amazement. In each of those instances, we had to break through our ideas about how much we can handle and go deeper into our hidden reserves. The thought that we do not have the strength to handle what is before us can be likened to the hard surface of a frozen lake. It appears to be an impenetrable fact, but when we break through it, we find that a deep well of energy and inspiration was trapped beneath that icy barrier the whole time. Sometimes we break through by cutting a hole into our resistance with our willpower, and sometimes we melt the ice with compassion for our predicament and ourselves. Either way, each time we break through, we reach a new understanding of the strength we store within ourselves. When we find ourselves up against that frozen barrier of thinking we cannot handle our situation, we may find that the kindest choice is to love ourselves and our resistance too. We can simply accept that we are overwhelmed, exhausted, and stretched, and we can offer ourselves loving kindness and compassion. If we can extend to ourselves the unconditional warmth of a mother’s love, before we know it, the ice will begin to break. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” New Rules for Bowling

If you holler “overs!” before the ball passes the arrows, you get to throw the ball over, unless of course, you get a strike. In which case, you can renege on the “overs”. When your team is about 10 marks down in the 8th or 9th frame, you can invoke the rule “First Team Through Bowling Wins the Game”, and your team still has a chance. After a member of the opposing team bowls 4 strikes in a row, he/she must bowl the next 4 frames blindfolded. If he/she continues to strike, his/her shoelaces will be tied together for 2 frames. When you leave the 10-pin and you know you can’t make the spare, but another member of your team can, invoke the “Designated Bowler” rule. After you have 4 splits in one game, you may say “Kings X” and take those 4 frames over. However, if you split on the 2nd time around, you accept it. After all, “Fair is Fair”. If your ball goes in the gutter and jumps back onto the lane, knocking down pins, by golly, you get them! That’s much harder than to knock them down the conventional way. Good bowling should be recognized. A ball should be declared dead when you bowl 3 games without a strike. It shall be the owners privilege to decide on the disposition of said dead ball - Burial at Sea, Dropped from an airplane over a live volcano, or a simple burial in the city dump. For a small fee, a league officer can be bribed to deliver a short eulogy.

Hollywood, which by now represented not just a city, but also an industry, a lifestyle and, increasingly, an aspiration, was officially crowned when the “Hollywoodland” sign was erected in 1923. Built by Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler as an epic $21,000 billboard for his upscale Hollywoodland real estate development, the Sign soon took on the role of giant marquee for a city that was constantly announcing its own gala premiere. Dates and debates swirl about when the Hollywoodland Real Estate development – and the massive electric sign that advertised it – actually came into being. But a review of local newspapers from the era (i.e., The Los Angeles Times, Holly Leaves, Los Angeles Record, Los Angeles Examiner and the Hollywood Daily Citizen) clears up any confusion. For instance, a Hollywoodland ad in the Los Angeles Times (June 10, 1923) states that the real estate development launched in late March of that year and that by June, 200 men were employed, 7 miles of road had been cut and 300,000 cubic yards of dirt had been moved. And while some sources still cite that the Sign was born in 1924, the correct date is indisputably 1923. The earliest found mention of the Sign appeared on December 14, 1923 in a Holly Leaves article about the Mulholland Highway soon to be built, which would extend from “…from the western end of the (Griffith Park) road, under the electric sign of Hollywoodland, around Lake Hollywood and across the dam.” Just two weeks later another Los Angeles Times article (December 30, 1923) with the headline “Hollywood Electric Sign Reached by Car,” reported on actor Harry Neville’s epic, experimental trip to test whether a motorcar could reach the Sign on the unpaved grade, and whether the car’s brakes would work on the precipitous path down. According to the article, “A motley crowd of hillclimbers, workmen, salesmen and curiousity thrill-seekers …stood by with fear and trembling as the loose dirt began to give way but Neville stuck by the ship…” to make it safely back to the “wide smooth roads of Hollywoodland.” There has also been debate about whether the Sign was originally erected without lights (with the thousands of bulbs added later). However, historic photos from the Bruce Torrence Hollywood Photograph collection, taken just as the Sign was being erected, show workers carrying parts of the Sign that include the original lights in frames or “troughs.” Bruce Torrence, curator of the photo collection, notes that the shape of the light boxes indicate that these sections were probably part of the letter “A” and possibly the “L.” Confusion solved: by the end of 1923, the Hollywood Sign was fully erected, a high-profile beacon – lights ablaze – for the fast-growing Los Angeles metropolis. The “billboard” was massive. Each of the original 13 letters was 30 feet wide and approximately 43 feet tall, constructed of 3×9′ metal squares rigged together by an intricate frame of scaffolding, pipes, wires and telephone poles. All of this material had to be dragged up precipitous Mt. Lee by laborers on simple dirt paths. Few know that a giant white dot (35 feet in diameter, with 20-watt lights on the perimeter) was constructed below the Sign to catch the eye. The Sign itself featured 4,000 20-watt bulbs, spaced 8 inches apart. At night the Sign blinked into the Hollywood night: first “Holly” then “wood” and finally “land,” punctuated by a giant period. The effect was truly spectacular, particularly for pre-Ve-

gas sensibilities. Originally intended to last just a year and a half, the Sign has endured more than eight decades – and is still going strong.

Explaining Poo

A little boy asks his dad “Where does poo come from?” His father is taken aback by the question but decides to give his son the facts straight up. “Well son,” he says, “food passes down the esophagus by peristalsis. It enters the stomach, where digestive enzymes induce a probiotic reaction in the alimentary canal. This contracts the protein before waste enters the colon. Water is absorbed, whereupon it enters the rectum finally to emerge as poo.” “Wow,” says the boy. “So where does Tigger come from?” FRESH ROASTED GARLIC JAM, CARROLS CORNER, South Yerington, Delivery Available, for more information (775)846-8972 or (775)463-1265 MINOR TO MAJOR AUTOMOTIVE REPAIRS, Tires and More! The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced the availability of up to $5 million for wetland mitigation banks. This funding through the Wetland Mitigation Banking Program is available to help conservation partners develop or establish mitigation banks to help agricultural producers maintain eligibility for USDA programs. “Wetlands are critically important to the health of our natural resources -- filtering water, reducing soil loss and providing habitat to our nation’s wildlife while also helping to sequester carbon from the atmosphere,” said Nevada State Conservationist Ray Dotson. “Through the Wetland Mitigation Banking Program, we’re working with experienced wetland mitigation partners to give farmers another option to meet Farm Bill requirements.” Wetland mitigation banking is the restoration, creation or enhancement of wetlands to compensate for unavoidable impacts on wetlands at other locations. The Farm Bill’s wetland conservation provisions, commonly called Swampbuster provisions, aim to remove certain incentives to convert wetlands or to produce agricultural commodities on converted wetlands. Producers seeking benefits through most USDA programs must comply with wetland conservation provisions by affirming they will not impact wetlands on their lands. In situations where avoidance or on-site mitigation is challenging, the Farm Bill allows for off-site mitigation through the purchase of mitigation banking credits. This competitive grants program helps states, local governments and other qualified partners develop wetland mitigation banks to restore, create or enhance wetland ecosystems. Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov by 11:59 p.m. ET on July 6, 2020. NRCS is accepting proposals from eligible Indian Tribes, state and local units of government, for-profit entities and nongovernmental organizations. For more information on wetland mitigation banking, visit our website. USDA is an equal opportunity provider, employer and lender. Accounting Mistakes

An office worker opened his pay envelope to find his check was short $100. He called the accounting department to voice his complaint. “You’re right, we made a mistake,” said the clerk, “but last week we overpaid you $100 and we didn’t hear you complaining then.” “Look,” said the man, “I can overlook one mistake. But two weeks in a row?”

Hugging

Army of The Lord

A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day and the preacher was standing at the door as he always is, to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside. The Pastor said to him, “You need to join the Army of the Lord!” My friend replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor.” Pastor questioned, “How come I don’t see you except at Christmas and Easter?” He whispered back, “I’m in the secret service.”

Difference Between an Epidemic and a Pandemic

Epidemic is a term that is often broadly used to describe any problem that has grown out of control. An epidemic is defined as “an outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects an exceptionally high proportion of the population.”2 An epidemic is an event in which a disease is actively spreading. In contrast, the term pandemic relates to geographic spread and is used to describe a disease that affects a whole country or the entire world. While casual use of epidemic may not require such nuance, it’s important to know the differences between these two terms (and similar ones like outbreak and endemic) when considering public health news. In addition, from an epidemiologic standpoint, terms like these direct the public health response to better control and prevent a disease. Self Portrait

Mrs. Flinders decided to have her portrait painted. She told the artist, “Paint me with diamond earrings, a diamond necklace, emerald bracelets and a ruby pendant.” “But you’re not wearing any of those things.” “I know,” said Mrs. Flinders. “It’s in case I should die before my husband. I’m sure he’d remarry right away, and I want her to go nuts looking for the jewelry.”

iPhone Trouble

March was when my son celebrated his 15th birthday and I got him an iPhone. He just loved it. Who wouldn’t? I celebrated my birthday in July and my wife made me very happy when she bought me an iPad. My daughter’s birthday was in August so I got her an iPod Touch. September came by, so for my wife’s birthday I bought her an iRon. It was around then that the fight started. What my wife failed to recognize is that the iRon can be integrated into the home network with the iWash, iCook and iClean. This unfortunately activated the iB#@ch. Which led me to the iHospital and iGet out Thursday.

I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and humiliation known as buying a bathing suit. When I was a child in the 1950’s, the bathing costume for a woman with a mature figure was designed for a woman with a mature figure - boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a darn good job. Today’s stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure chipped from marble. The mature woman has a choice - she can either front up at the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who escaped from Disney’s Fantasia - or she can wander around every run-of-the-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands. What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing suits was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which give the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you are protected from shark attacks. The reason for this is that a shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash. I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap into place I gasped in horror ... my bosom had disappeared. Eventually I found one bosom cowering under my left armpit. It took awhile to find the other. At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib. The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed bump. I re-aligned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full- view assessment. The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately it only fit those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom and sides. I looked like a lump of play-dough wearing undersize cling wrap. As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent salesgirl popped her head through the curtains, “Oh, THERE you are!” she said, admiring the suit. I replied that I wasn’t so sure and asked what else she had to show me. I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two piece which gave the appearance of an oversize napkin in a serviette ring. I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers with a ragged frill and came out looking like Tarzan’s Jane on a bad day. I tried a black number with a midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink one with such a high-cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear it. Finally I found a suit that fit ... a two-piece affair with shortsstyle bottoms and a halter top. It was cheap, comfortable and bulge-friendly, so I bought it. When I got home, I read the label which said “Material may become transparent in water,” but I’m determined to wear it anyway. I just have to learn to breaststroke in the sand.

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” If It Bleeds, It Leads: Understanding Fear-Based Media

News is a money-making industry. One that doesn’t always make the goal to report the facts accurately. Gone are the days of tuning in to be informed straightforwardly about local and national issues. In truth, watching the news can be a psychologically risky pursuit, which could undermine your mental and physical health. Fear-based news stories prey on the anxieties we all have and then hold us hostage. Being glued to the television, reading the paper, or surfing the Internet increases ratings and market shares — but it also raises the probability of depression relapse. In previous decades, the journalistic mission was to report the news as it actually happened, with fairness, balance, and integrity. However, capitalistic motives associated with journalism have forced much of today’s television news to look to the spectacular, the stirring, and the controversial as news stories. It’s no longer a race to break the story first or get the facts right. Instead, it’s to acquire good ratings in order to get advertisers, so that profits soar. News programming uses a hierarchy of if it bleeds, it leads. Fear-based news programming has two aims. The first is to grab the viewer’s attention. In the news media, this is called the teaser. The second aim is to persuade the viewer that the solution for reducing the identified fear will be in the news story. If a teaser asks, “What’s in your tap water that YOU need to know about?” a viewer will likely tune in to get the up-to-date information to ensure safety.

What it means to be poor

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people can be. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?” “It was great, Dad.” “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh Yeah” said the son. “So what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered, “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.” With this the boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “Thanks dad for showing me how poor we are.” CAGE FREE DOG DAYCARE AND BOARDING in Gardnerville (next to post office), will provide a fun, safe environment giving your pet the socialization and exercise he/she needs, call now for reservations (775)782-4695 The quickest way to double your money is to fold it over and put it back in your pocket. -- Will Rogers

The success of fear-based news relies on presenting dramatic anecdotes in place of scientific evidence, promoting isolated events as trends, depicting categories of people as dangerous and replacing optimism with fatalistic thinking. News conglomerates who want to achieve this use media logic, by tweaking the rhythm, grammar, and presentation format of news stories to elicit the greatest impact. Did you know that some news stations work with consultants who offer fear-based topics that are prescripted, outlined with point-of-view shots, and have experts atthe-ready? This practice is known as stunting or just-add-water reporting. Often, these practices present misleading information and promote anxiety in the viewer. Another pattern in newscasts is that the breaking news story doesn’t go beyond a surface level. The need to get-the-storyto-get-the-ratings often causes reporters to bypass thorough fact-checking. As the first story develops to a second level in later reports, the reporter corrects the inaccuracies and missing elements. As the process of fact-finding continually changes, so does the news story. What journalists first reported with intense emotion or sensationalism is no longer accurate. What occurs psychologically for the viewer is a fragmented sense of knowing what’s real, which sets off feelings of hopelessness and helplessness — experiences known to worsen depression. An additional practice that heightens anxiety and depression is the news station’s use of the crawl, the scrolling headline ticker that appears at the bottom of the television, communicating “breaking news.” Individuals who watch news-based programming are likely to see one, two, or even three crawls scroll across the screen. The multitasking required to read the crawls

and comprehend the actual newscast comes easy to some viewers, whereas others report feeling over-stimulated. One could easily change the channel to interrupt the transmission of such information. However, crawls are not relegated to just news channels. Unlike the viewing experience of the past, crawls are now more prominent during entertainment programs and often serve as commercials for nightly newscasts or the upcoming weekly news magazine show. The crawls frequently contain fear-driven material, broad-siding an unsuspecting viewer. It’s been said that fear-based media has become a staple of popular culture. The distressing fall-out from this trend is that children and adults who are exposed to media are more likely than others to: Feel that their neighborhoods and communities are unsafe, Believe that crime rates are rising, Overestimate their odds of becoming a victim, Consider the world to be a dangerous place. News media needs to return to a sense of proportion, conscience, and, most important, truth-telling. Until that happens, help inoculate yourself against feeling overwhelmed by doing the following: Consider limiting your exposure to media. Give yourself a set time once or twice a day to check in on local and global happenings. Consider choosing print media for your information gathering rather than visual media. This can reduce the likelihood that you get exposed to emotionally laden material. Home pages on the internet can give you an overall sense of what’s going on, as can headline news channels that update stories on the hour. Remember that you have the power to turn off the remote,

Tees and Tots: How kids can benefit from playing golf

There are many advantages to the early adoption of golf. Learning to golf can provide social, physical, and emotional benefits. Golf offers a perfect venue for positive parent/child interactions. It can be a great way to encourage quality time and bonding between a parent and child, which can set the stage for a lasting relationship. This sport also requires that children mind their manners and conduct themselves respectfully while on the course. In addition to etiquette, golf helps children learn to problem solve, use numbers, and be confident in their abilities while also improving on their weaknesses. Golf helps develop the youth’s emotional health by encouraging self-improvement and challenging them to persevere through frustrations. It requires players to self-analyze, practice, and accept encouragement and constructive critique from coaches and peers. With both achievements and disappointments on the horizon, little players must learn to sustain a positive outlook, learn from their mistakes, and “shake it off” when they fall short so that past faults do not affect current performance or future results. Because golf is a game of self-improvement, it requires the player to focus on their performance, and it eliminates the opportunity to easily ascribe shortfalls to team members. Golf requires the child to practice emotional management, positivity, proper planning, clear focus, good social skills, and persever-

ance. It also helps them assess both the task at hand as well as the bigger picture. As children learn how to conduct themselves properly while they are on the course, they are also learning how to become happy, healthy, successful members of society. After 174 days, the Tarolinta finally sailed into San Francisco harbor on June 29, 1849 (or July 6, 1849, according to other sources). The arrival was much to the relief of all aboard, the captain included. But here they found the town’s dock space completely occupied. The ship was forced to drop anchor out in the harbor and hire rowboats to get the passengers and cargo ashore. And a surprising assortment of goods there were! Operators of the “Russian Store” at San Francisco soon advertised the arrival of assorted silk shawls, handkerchiefs, ladies’ fancy cravats, ribbons, plaid silk, buck gloves, silk scarves, plus a “superior assortment of cigars,” all courtesy of the Tarolinta. Stepping on California’s shore that summer of 1849 put Jonas Winchester among the very first wave of the oncoming Gold Rush. He and his associates quickly made their way to the North Fork of the American River, where they tried their hand at mining. They purchased steam-powered equipment, built dams and even constructed roads. But the rains that fall would wash all their hard work away. By the winter of 1849 Winchester had turned back to what he knew best: publishing. He secured a post as editor and partowner of the Pacific News, one of the first San Francisco newspapers. In May, 1850, Winchester took over the appointment of H.H. Robinson, California’s first State Printer. This government printing contract offered a steady and abundant stream of work, but payment by the State came in the form of semi-worthless warrants, making it difficult for Winchester to meet his own obligations. He resigned the post in March, 1851. The Pacific News folded in 1851, the victim of several fires. Winchester was now unemployed, but was still convinced that “greater things were in store for him.” He moved to Grass Valley, where it’s said he built the first sawmill and quartz mill in the vicinity, and began snapping up interests in local mining companies. Meanwhile, back in New York, his wife, Susan, was suffering from consumption (tuberculosis). Winchester’s California mines also failed to produce the lavish returns he’d hoped for. Winchester decided to return to New York. Susan died in Brooklyn in February, 1855, at just 43 years of age. Winchester was not cut out to be a bachelor, however, and soon he was married again -- this time to widow Margaret Bartholomew Brown, a supporter of women’s suffrage and an associate of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. That marriage apparently did not last. Finally, in April, 1869, Winchester married a third time, wedding Laura Karner. Their first child, Ernest, was born in 1870 but died in infancy. Winchester was now pursuing a patent medicine business called “Winchester’s Hypophosphites” — putting his own signature on the label. This endeavor helped him at least make ends meet, bringing in an estimated $3,000 per year. But his heart was still fixed on mining. In the mid-1860s, he acquired the Globe Gold & Silver Mining Co. and other mining interests in Monitor Canyon, in Alpine County. As early as 1867, Alpine locals were receiving letters saying Winchester intended to come out “next season.” And come out he finally did, moving to the town of Monitor with wife Laura in 1871. Two children were born right

there in that tiny mining town. So that’s the story of how Jonas Winchester wound up in Alpine County, tying together his mining years in Alpine and the threads from the previous parts of this fun story. It’s a few months out, yet. But Winchester was born on November 19, 1810. We hope you’ll think of him and his wild, wonderful, adventurous life this coming November 19th, when his 211th birthday rolls around! A client who felt his legal bill was too high asked his lawyer to itemize costs. The statement included this item: “Was walking down the street and saw you on the other side. The difference between email and website addresses

There are people who have tried to send an email to a website address: www.example.com, or tried to visit the website of an email address: fred@example.com. The problem is not always evident to new computer users. So how can you tell an email address from a website address? The simplest way to tell the difference is an email address always contains the ‘at sign’ (@), and a website address never does. Email addresses should be written in lower case eg. fredsmith@example.com. Sometimes you will see an email address written in mixed case (FredSmith@example.com) to improve readability. 2004 YAMAHA XVS65/A WITH ANOTHER YAMAHA for parts; 1972 Fiberfoam boat with motor, trailer and cover (775)431-9461 AUTISM, ATTENTION THERAPY, ANXIETY, social and focus issues, for children and adults, certified in Safe and Sound Protocol, Call Meredyth in Dayton (805)674-2867

No Toilet Paper

Q: Why was the fear of Coronavirus causing a run on toilet paper? A: Because when someone sneezed, everyone within 25 feet soiled their pants.

You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time. Abraham Lincoln

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” A Prayer for Father’s Day

God our Father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; May they find the courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for our own fathers who have supported and challenged us; May they continue to lead in strong and gentle ways. We remember fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; May they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memories and nourish us with their love.
