“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”

You may not know this but many nonliving things have a gender

A Web Page is Female, because it’s always getting hit on. A Subway is Male, because it uses the same old lines to pick people up. Ziploc Bags are Male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them. Copiers are Female, because once turned off; it takes a while to warm them up again. It’s an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can wreak havoc if the wrong buttons are pushed. A Tire is Male, because it goes bald and it’s often over-inflated.

An Hourglass is Female, because over time, the weight shifts to the bottom. A Hot Air Balloon is Male, because, to get it to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under it, and of course, there’s the hot air part. Sponges are Female, because they’re soft, squeezable and retain water. A Hammer is Male, because it hasn’t changed much over the last 5,000 years, but it’s handy to have around. A Remote Control is Female. Ha! You thought it’d be male didn’t you? But consider this - it gives a man pleasure, he’d be lost without it, and while he doesn’t always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying!

Emptying the bathtub

During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, “How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put in an old age home?”

“Well,” he said, “we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub.”

“Oh, I understand,” I said. “A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No” he said. “A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?”

I like this teacher!

A lesson that should be taught in all schools and colleges.

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom.

When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. ‘Ms. Cothren, where’re our desks?’ She replied, ‘You can’t have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.’

They thought, ‘Well, maybe it’s our grades.’ ‘No,’ she said. ‘Maybe it’s our behavior.’ She told them, ‘No, it’s not even your behavior.’

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms. Cothren’s classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled

students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom, Martha Cothren said, ‘Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.’ At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it.

Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.

Martha said, ‘You didn’t earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it’s up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don’t ever forget it.’

Never left his side

This woman’s husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for months, and through it all she never left his side.

She stayed through every hospital visit, every setback, every quiet night by his bedside.

One afternoon, he finally opened his eyes. Weakly, he motioned for her to come closer.

She leaned in, holding his hand, tears in her eyes. With great effort, he whispered: “You know… you’ve been with me through everything.” She smiled softly.

“When I lost my job… you stayed.” “When my business failed… you stayed.” “When I got shot… you stayed.” “When we lost the house… you still stayed.” …You know what?” “What dear,” she gently asked, smiling as her heart began to fill with warmth.

He paused, staring at her for a long moment, his voice barely above a breath. Then he added: “…I think you’re bad luck.”

Let me see if I’ve got this right!

After being interviewed by the school administration, the prospective teacher said: ‘Let me see if I’ve got this right.

‘You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning.

‘You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self esteem and personal pride.’

You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job.

‘You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the final exams.

‘You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Spanish or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card.

‘You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps.

‘You want me to do all this and then you tell me. . . I/We CAN’T PRAY?

Hannah Beth - Dare to be a Cowboy (DTBAC) was founded in 2014 by Hannah Beth, who was just 16 years old at the time, with one goal in mind: make sure kids with big rodeo dreams don’t get left behind because of financial hardship or lack of resources.

DTBAC was inspired by a close friend of Hannah’s who worked all sumer toward the goal of competing in the high school rodeo season, only to find out when the time came that they still couldn’t afford to enter. As a first-generation cowgirl herself, Hannah knew that story wasn’t rare. It was happening everywhere: hardworking kids doing everything right, but still missing the oppor-tunities they had earned. That moment became the start of DTBAC. For more information visit dtbac.com or see advertisement in this issue of the “Scoop”.

An open letter to my Grandson

Dear grandson! I want you to know I love(d) being your grandma. It was one of the greatest joys of my life, second to being a mom.

Never in my lifetime did I think I’d be writing a letter like this to one I love very much but never get to see.

It has been 6 years since the last time we were together. I was so happy to take you on your first hike to “grandmas favorite go to place” the Sierra mountains.

It was a beautiful sunny day as we trekked along the trail with hiking sticks in hand. We stopped to listen to the trees “whisper to one another” through the breeze. We skipped stones from the river’s edge. We listened to the quiet of the mountains in God’s country.

At the end of our hike, we came across a really big boulder that had a split down the middle of it (about 15’ long), but just wide enough for you to walk through from one side to the other. You were a little hesitant at first. Grandma then said, “I will go stand at the other end of the split so you can see me and then walk to me.” With hiking stick in hand you cautiously made your way through the split. You were so proud of yourself as was grandma. That was actually the last photo I took of you, walking through the split. It was a beautiful time!

I miss you grandson! I miss watching you grow and learning new things every day. I miss nap time when you’d climb onto my lap and lay in my arms while I rocked you to sleep. I miss our hugs, our butterfly kisses, your snuggles and smiles which melted my heart. I miss your laugh, your giggles, songs we sang, playing “what do you hear?”walking the dogs, catching horned toads, tossing cow pies, flying a kite, feeding the ducks, counting pennies, camping out in the living room in your tent, baking muffins, reading stories, going to the skateboard park - you riding your wiggle bike and grandma riding her scooter. Most importantly, I miss sharing you with relatives and friends. We all miss you!

Time, family and memories are so valuable grandson, which are reasons why I write this letter to you on my 69th birthday. This is a gift for you, myself and to others as well.

I love you! I am so sorry this has happened. “One day at a time, one prayer at a time, one memory at a time, always know I will never give up reconnecting with you” and until we hug again, always know you’re in my heart and thoughts always, love you, Grandma Lisa

A little girl is sitting on her grandpa’s lap and studying the wrinkles on his old face. She gets up the nerve to rub her fingers over the wrinkles. Then she touches her own face and looks more puzzled. Finally the little girl asks, “Grandpa, did God make you?”

“He sure did honey, a long time ago,” replies her grandpa.

“Well, did God make me?” asks the little girl. “Yes, He did, and that wasn’t too long ago,” answers her grandpa. “Boy,” says the little girl, “He’s sure doing a lot better job these days isn’t He?”

Teenagers are like Cats!

Neither teenagers nor cats turn their heads when you call them by name.

No matter what you do for them, it is not enough. Indeed, all humane efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot.

You rarely see a cat walking outside of the house with an adult human being, and it can be safely said that no teenager in his or her right mind wants to be seen in public with his or her parents.

Even if you tell jokes as well as Jay Leno, neither your cat nor your teen will ever crack a smile.

No cat or teenager shares your taste in music.

Cats and teenagers can lie on the living-room sofa for hours on end without moving, and barely breathing.

Cats have nine lives. And teenagers carry on as if they surely did!

Cats and teenagers yawn in exactly the same manner, communicating that ultimate human ecstasy -- a sense of complete and utter boredom. Y-a-w-n!!

Cats and teenagers do not improve anyone’s furniture.

Cats that are free to roam outside sometimes have been known to return in the middle of the night to deposit a dead animal in your bedroom. Teenagers are not above that sort of behavior. Thus, if you must raise teenagers, the best sources of advice are not other parents, but veterinarians. It is also a good idea to keep a guidebook on cats on hand at all times. And remember, above all else, put out the food and do not make any sudden moves in their direction. When they make up their minds, they will finally come to you for some affection and comfort, and it will be a triumphant moment for all concerned.

The story of my life...

After years of scrimping and saving, I told my wife the good news: “Honey, we’ve finally saved enough money to buy what we started saving for in 1996.”

“You mean a brand-new Cadillac?” she asked eagerly.

“No,” I said sadly, “a 1996 Cadillac.”

Where is Jesus?

One day at Sunday school, the teacher was asking the kids where Jesus lives. The teacher picked on one of the kids.

“Jesus lives in my heart.” “Very good.” said the teacher. She picks on another kid who replies, “Jesus lives in Heaven.” Very good said the teacher.

Little Johnny is in the back just waving his hand to be called on. The teacher didn’t want to call on little Johnny but finally did. “Jesus lives in the bathroom.”

After a moment, the teacher asked why he lived in the bathroom. “Every morning when my dad gets up he bangs on the bathroom door and asks Jesus Christ are you still in there?”

Checkup

A naked woman is bouncing on her bed singing. Her husband walks into the bedroom and sees her. He watches her a while then says, “You look ridiculous! What on earth do you think you’re doing?”

She says, “I just got my checkup and my doctor says I have the breasts of an eighteen year old.” She starts laughing and jumping again.

He says, “Yeah, right. And what did he say about your 45-year-old ass?”

“Your name never came up, “ she replied.

Things that Hallmark cards don’t say

My tire was thumping. I thought it was flat. When I looked at the tire... I noticed your cat. Sorry!

Heard your wife left you, How upset you must be. But don’t fret about it... She moved in with me.

Looking back over the years that we’ve been together, I can’t help but wonder... “What the hell was I thinking?”

Congratulations on your wedding day! Too bad no one likes your husband.

I’ve always wanted to have someone to hold, someone to love. After having met you. I’ve changed my mind.

I must admit, you brought Religion into my life. I never believed in Hell until I met you.

As the days go by, I think of how lucky I am... That you’re not here to ruin it for me.

Congratulations on your promotion. Before you go... Would you like to take this knife out of my back? You’ll probably need it again.

Happy birthday! You look great for your age. Almost Lifelike!

When we were together, you always said you’d die for me. Now that we’ve broken up, I think it’s time you kept your promise.

We have been friends for a very long time. Let’s say we stop?

I’m so miserable without you it’s almost like you’re here.

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy. Did you ever find out who the father was?

Your friends and I wanted to do something special for your birthday. So we’re having you put to sleep.

So your daughter’s a hooker, and it spoiled your day. Look at the bright side, it’s really good pay.

A Short Prayer For Unity

Dear God, Thank You for being the source of peace and love. Help us to live in harmony, setting aside our differences to focus on what truly matters—loving You and one another. Give us hearts that are patient and humble, seeking to build bridges rather than walls. May Your Spirit guide us to work together and reflect Your perfect unity. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
