I was eleven years old standing outside in just my underwear while I watched the house that I grew up in rapidly burn to the ground. A few minutes earlier I had been sound asleep in my nice, warm bed when a scream woke me up. My Nana’s bedroom was just next to mine and my brother’s. A fire had broken out there and awakened her. Hearing her my older brother had sprung into action. While I stumbled around in the smoke and darkness he ran from room to room quickly waking everyone in the house. The house, however, was over 50 years old and made of wood. Before we could do anything the fire consumed it. We all barely made it outside before the flames engulfed every room. I stood there shivering while the fire destroyed my books, clothes, and toys. I watched helplessly while my Mom cried and my Dad swore. I wandered what was going to happen to us now that we had lost all of our things. As I looked around, though, I realized something for the first time: The things that matter, aren’t things. I saw my older brother running across the swinging bridge by our house to get help. I saw my oldest brother who was on crutches from an earlier accident standing unsteadily on one leg. I saw my Nana and Dad huddled together and my Mom holding our little dog in her arms. I realized at that moment that we were all alive. Everything that was essential had survived the fire. Our lives would continue. We would survive without the “stuff” that was burning. We would all be around to love each other for many years to come. And that was all that mattered. I still think of that fire in the night that helped me to become who I am today. It showed me for the very first time what is truly essential in this life. It helped me to see God’s love and protection for us in this often difficult world. It helped me to learn that the love we share is far more important than the things we possess. Live your life then for the things that matter, not for the things you own. Love others. Help everyone. Let the fire inside of you make this world a warmer place. Let your soul shine so bright that Heaven sings and God smiles. (Joseph J. Mazzella) FREE TO GOOD OWNER - CLASSIC VCR tapes. Some in original packaging. Lessons To Be Learned

Re-luster / Refurbish / Disinfect Kitchen Cabinets

They say there’s a universal plan for every woman, for every man. I do believe there’s a higher power but in our darkest hour it’s hard to understand. So we start to question, start to doubt we lose faith in what life’s all about. Why did the right road take the wrong turn. Why did our heart break, why’d we get burned. Just like the seasons there are reasons for the path we take. There are no mistakes, just lessons to be learned. Don’t give up, keep on looking deep inside, let your heart be your guide ‘cause there’s a gift, for those who keep believing. You’ll find what you’ve been needing is right before your eyes. You’ll hold the answer in your hands, then you’ll know, you’ll finally understand. Why did the right road take a wrong turn. Why did our heart break, why’d we get burned. Just like the seasons there are reasons for the path we take. There are no mistakes, just lessons to be learned. No matter how many times you stumble or fall. The greatest lesson is loving yourself through it all. Why did the right road take a wrong turn. Why did our heart break, why’d we get burned, just like the seasons, there are reasons for the path we take. There are no mistakes just lessons lesson’s to be learned.

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” If I didn’t have a Dog or Cat…..

I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety. My house could be carpeted instead of tiled and laminated. All flat surfaces, clothing, furniture, and cars would be free of hair. When the doorbell rings, it wouldn’t sound like a kennel. When the doorbell rings, I could get to the door without wading through fuzzy bodies who beat me there. I could sit on the couch and my bed the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space several fur bodies would need to get comfortable. I would have money and no guilt to go on a real vacation. I would not be on a first-name basis with 6 veterinarians, as I put their yet unborn grandkids through college. The most used words in my vocabulary would not be: out, sit, down, come, no, stay, and leave him/her/it ALONE. My house would not be cordoned off into zones with baby gates or barriers. I would not talk ‘baby talk’. ‘Eat your din din’. ‘Yummy yummy for the tummy’. My house would not look like a day care center, toys everywhere. My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, treats and an extra leash. I would no longer have to spell the words B-A-L-L, F-R-I-S-B-E- E, W-A-L-K, T-R-E-A-T, B-I-K-E, G-O, R-I-D-E. I would not have as many leaves INSIDE my house as outside. I would not look strangely at people who think having ONE dog/cat ties them down too much. I’d look forward to spring and the rainy season instead of dreading ‘mud’ season. I would not have to answer the question ‘Why do you have so many animals?’ from people who will never have the joy in their lives of knowing they are loved unconditionally by someone as close to an angel as they will ever get. How EMPTY my life would be!

Things that make you go hmmmmmm...

How come wrong numbers are never busy? Do people in Australia call the rest of the world ‘up over’? Does killing time damage eternity? Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? Why is it called lipstick if you can still move your lips? Why is it that night falls but day breaks? Why is the third hand on the watch called a second hand? Why is it that when you’re driving and looking for an address, you turn down the radio? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons? Can you buy an entire chess set in a pawn-shop? Day light savings time - why are they saving it and where do they keep it? Do Roman paramedics refer to IV’s as ‘4’s’? Men strike back! Marvin -Men’s Answer to Maxine

How many men does it take to open a beer? None. It should be opened when she brings it. Why is a Laundromat a really bad place to pick up a woman? Because a woman who can’t even afford a washing machine will probably never be able to support you. Why do women have smaller feet than men? It’s one of those ‘evolutionary things’ that allows them to stand closer to the kitchen sink. How do you know when a woman is about to say something smart? When she starts a sentence with ‘A man once told me......’ Why do men die before their wives? They want to. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. How many police officers are there in the U.S.?

There are more than 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States, which is the highest figure ever. About 12 percent of those are female. Crime fighting has taken its toll. Since the first recorded police death in 1786, there have been more than 22,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Currently, there are 22,217 names engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. A total of 1,627 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past 10 years, an average of one death every 54 hours or 163 per year. There were 135 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2019. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report 2018 LEOKA report: There have been 58,866 assaults against law enforcement officers in 2018, resulting in 18,005 injuries. The 1920s were the deadliest decade in law enforcement history, when a total of 2,517 officers died, or an average of almost 252 each year. The deadliest year in law enforcement history was 1930, when 312 officers were killed. That figure dropped dramatically in the 1990s, to an average of 163 per year. The deadliest day in law enforcement history was September 11, 2001, when 72 officers were killed while responding to the terrorist attacks on America. The New York City Police Department has lost more officers in the line of duty than any other department, with 941 deaths. Texas has lost 1,772 officers, more than any other state. The state with the fewest deaths is Vermont, with 24. There are 1,181 federal officers listed on the Memorial, as well as 720 correctional officers and 44 military law enforcement officers. There are 365 female officers listed on the Memorial; 11 female officers were killed in 2019. 2020 Roll Call of Heroes - This year, the names of 307 officers killed in the line of duty will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These 307 officers include 135 officers who were killed during 2019, plus 172 officers who died in previous years but whose stories of sacrifice had been lost to history until now. Road Repair

The road by my house was in bad condition. Every day, I dodged potholes on the way to work, so I was relieved to see a construction crew working on the road one morning. Later, on my way home, I noticed the men were gone and no improvement in the road. Where the crew had been working stood a new, bright-yellow sign with the words, “Rough Road.” The publisher does not assume any responsibility for the contents of any advertising herein, and all representation or warranties made in such advertising are those of the advertisers and not the publishers.

New Savings Account

A mother decided that 10-year-old Cathy should get something ‘practical’ for her birthday. “Suppose we open a savings account for you?” mother suggested. Cathy was delighted. “It’s your account, darling,” mother said as they arrived at the bank, “so you fill out the application.” Cathy was doing fine until she came to the space for ‘Name of your former bank.’ After a slight hesitation, she put down, ‘Piggy.’ GET FAST INTERNET! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Story of Dr. Ernest Hand, Part 1 by Karen Dustman

The Douglas County School District is currently accepting applications for: Substitute School Bus Drivers, Starting Salary: $15.88/hour, Varied Hours up to 40 hours a week, Apply online: dcsd.k12.nv.us

Physician. Surgeon. Obstetrician. First responder. Ambulance driver. Back in the day, Gardnerville’s Dr. Ernest Hand did it all. Baby arriving? He’d come to your home for the delivery. Suffered a hunting accident out in the wilderness? He’d fight his way through the roughest territory to get to your side and render aid. Need an ambulance? He’d tote you piggyback out to his own Lincoln automobile, and then race for the hospital at Carson or Reno – without regard for posted speed limits. “Not to worry,” he’d say. “I used to be a race car driver.” Dr. Hand and his wife, Eleanor, arrived in Gardnerville in December, 1934, the year they were married. And for the next 23 years Dr. Hand would render expert, compassionate care to everyone in town, regardless of race, creed, color, or ability to pay. Born in Pennsylvania June 8, 1886, Dr. Hand put himself through Baltimore Medical College by working as a linotype operator for the Baltimore Sun. He started his medical career in New York in 1909, alternating private practice with a job as in-house physician for a company with 75,000 employees. He honed his medical skills in urology and dermatology. And perhaps more important for his future career, he also delivered some 5,000 babies – experience that would prove invaluable when he later arrived in Carson Valley. The good doctor not only loved medicine, he loved carpentry too. An excellent cabinet-maker, he helped build his own house on Douglas Avenue and made cabinets for his medical office. He also loved animals and gardening. In his off-hours (few as those were) he lovingly tended a garden and fruit trees by his home. He’d can and preserve the fruits and vegetable he grew, too. And oh, his work ethic! From 7 to 8 a.m. every morning Dr. Hand’s waiting room would be jammed with drop-in patients – no appointments needed. His office was right on Main Street just north of the Overland, where “Restyle” stands today. He’d treat everything from sniffles to gunshot wounds right there in his office. He made the drive to Carson City and Reno nearly every day to check on his patients in the hospital. And he also served as county health officer for both Douglas and Alpine Counties. Many Carson Valley residents still fondly remember Dr. Hand. “He was a happy ol’ guy — he looked like Santa Claus,” recalls one long-time local boy. “He had a belly, and white hair and glasses. He was very kind. And he would talk to you. One time as a kid I had pains every morning and my mom thought I just didn’t want to go to school. But there really was something wrong, and he figured it out.” “He was kinda like a miracle worker; it was like he had 48 hours in the day, not 24,” says another former patient. “Even after normal office hours, he’d go out and make house calls. And he’d still have just as much interest in you. It didn’t matter how late he’d been up the night before.” Medical care would often be simple but effective. “I fell once as a boy and broke my arm,” one local remembers. “Dr. Hand came up to the house and he just pulled on it to set it. You didn’t get pain shots for every little thing back then.” Karen Dustman writes frequently about Sierra history, fascinating people, and long-forgotten tales. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Dare To Be

Poem By Steve Maraboli

When a new day begins, Dare to smile gratefully. When there is darkness, Dare to be the first to shine a light. When there is injustice, Dare to be the first to condemn it. When something seems difficult, Dare to do it anyway. When life seems to beat you down, Dare to fight back. When there seems to be no hope, Dare to find some. When you’re feeling tired, Dare to keep going. When times are tough, Dare to be tougher. When love hurts you, Dare to love again. When someone is hurting, Dare to help them heal. When another is lost, Dare to help them find the way. When a friend falls, Dare to be the first to extend a hand. When you cross paths with another, Dare to make them smile. When you feel great, Dare to help someone else feel great too. When the day has ended, Dare to feel as you’ve done your best. Dare to be the best you can - At all times, dare to be! How was I born!

Son Says: Daddy, how was I born? Dad Says: Ah, well, my son, one day you will need to find out anyway... Mom and dad got together in a chat room on-line. Dad set up a date via e-mail with your mom and we met at a cybercafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, and then your mother downloaded from dad’s memory stick. As soon as dad was ready for an upload, it was discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall. Since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later the blessed little virus appeared. And that’s the story. Still there

Wedding cake preview

Wendy was waiting her turn at the bakery, when she heard a prospective bride give the cake decorator a hard time as she previewed her wedding cake. She demanded many extras and was critical of the work he’d done so far. After she left, he muttered, “I’m glad I put my special golden award on this cake. That young woman is sure eligible for it.” Curious, Wendy studied the cake closely, but saw nothing. Finally the decorator pointed to the tiny bridegroom atop the cake with his tiny bride and there it was . . . barely visible, a tiny wedding ring, inserted in the groom’s nose. I don’t like to dust and only do so when it is absolutely necessary. Yet, with the summer fans blowing and the dogs shedding I found myself working my duster the other day wiping dog hair and dust off the pictures hanging on my wall. I was going as quickly as possible trying to get it over with. In my haste, however, I knocked one of the pictures down. I managed to catch it before it hit the floor. Carefully, I started to hang it back on the wall when I saw him. He had thick, wavy, brown hair that was parted in the middle. His cheeks were full and his face unlined. He seemed to be staring off in the distance with his brown eyes and had a serious expression on his face. It was a picture of me at twenty. I finished hanging him back up and wondered vaguely where he had gone. That evening when I was brushing my teeth and looking in the mirror I wondered again where that guy was. The hair was thin and mostly silver now. The cheekbones had lost their fat and the face was full of wrinkles. The brown eyes were now staring through a pair of bifocals. But when I looked deeper I could see that he was still there. In fact, I think he may have grown a bit younger on the inside. His serious expression and worries for the future had been replaced by a smile and a trust in God’s love. His body wasn’t as strong and fit as it once was but his soul was stronger and in better shape than ever. His life on this Earth might be closer to its end but his life in Heaven was closer to its beginning. The truth is these bodies are just the temporary vehicles that carry around our essential and eternal souls. We should take good care of them but not identify with them. The real us is forever young. The real us is God’s love personified. The real us is the shining spirit within. Live from the real you then. Let your soul lead and your body will follow. Concerned Husband

Once there lived a happy couple who had been together for decades. But after spending years together, husband was concerned that his wife was not hearing well as she used to hear. He thought that she might need a hearing aid but he wasn’t sure how to approach her. He called his family doctor asked for suggestion. The doctor told him to test it with a simple idea. The doctor said, “Stand 40 feet away from her and speak as loud as you would speak to her in a normal conversation. Observe if she hears you. If not, reduce the distance into 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so until you get a response. The distance will help us to estimate her requirements for the hearing aid ” Next day, the husband saw his wife cooking dinner in the kitchen. So he took the opportunity to check the doctor’s Idea. He got 40 feet away from his wife and asked, “dear what is there for dinner?” He waited for response but did not get any. He moved a bit closer and asked “ dear, what is there for dinner?” He still did not get any response from his wife. He then stood twenty feet away from his wife and asked the same question, hoping he would get a response this time. But the wife did not respond. He then stood just ten feet away from his wife and asked “Dear, What is there for dinner.” He did not get any response. By now the husband was very concerned and felt pity about how bad is his wife’s hearing. Then he walked right behind her and says, “ Honey, what is there for dinner? “ The wife shouted, “John, This is the fifth time I’m saying it, CHICKEN..!!”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” How our Screens Diminish our Empathy

Empathy is the ability to recognize, understand, and share the thoughts and feelings of another person, animal, or fictional character. Developing empathy is crucial for establishing relationships and behaving compassionately. It involves experiencing another person’s point of view, rather than just one’s own, and enables prosocial, or helping behaviors that come from within, rather than being forced. 1. The influence of screens and social media. When you examine the data, there are distinct parallels between the introduction of social media and the decline in empathy or compassion. The University of Michigan first reported a 40 percent drop in empathy among college students a decade ago, about the same year social media took over student’s lives. 2. Screens produce the crowd effect. Have you read about the crowd effect? When people are downtown and see someone getting accosted, they respond differently—depending on whether there’s a crowd. If they see a bunch of people around, they assume someone else will do something. When alone, they’re more apt to respond. It seems that screens make us feel like there’s a crowd. 3. Screens separate us from real pain. We watch murders and robberies on TV. We see criticism take place on Twitter. We watch catastrophic “fails” on Youtube. Somehow, seeing so many tragedies numbs us to the reality of the pain. The screen distances us. What’s more, our mind doesn’t know the difference between a real experience and an imagined one. It’s like a show. 4. Screens have cultivated the priority of appearance. Be Strong And Walk Away

Don’t let anyone bring you down so low as to hate them. Release them from the hold they have on you and continue on with peace in your heart. Life is short and is not worth wasting your time trying to figure people out or prove anything to them. The only person you have to prove anything to is yourself. Strive to be the best person you can possibly be, be strong, and walk away. Holding on to bitterness and anger will only hinder your happiness. Your life is much too precious to spend another minute worrying about someone that doesn’t bring you happiness. Say goodbye and wish them well. After all, they’ve made you a stronger person. They’ll see the light someday. 14’ SEARS ALUMINUM BOAT, TRAILER WITH new tires, 9.8HP Nissan 4 Stroke, Electric Trolling Motor, Battery, Fishfinder, Seats, Oars, Rod Holders, everything works well $1,700 (775)782-6791 JR POWER SPORTS! devices is that people are now far more conscious of how something appears than what it is in reality. We are image conscious: How will this look on Instagram? Final Notes

My grandfather died when my dad was 14. His ashes were spread on a spot at a local cemetery. My grandmother never remarried and supposedly never even dated again. 40+ yrs later, my grandmother died. We spread her ashes on the same spot her husband was. Then, we went inside some building at the cemetery I didn’t know about. Apparently, this is where they kept personal records for the deceased. These books would have the name of the deceased, their date of death, a small note. and who they were “survived” by. Oftentimes there were spaces under their name for their spouses to be placed upon death. My dad found his father’s entry, and the space below for his mother. The note next to his dad said simply “Till we meet again.” I asked my dad what we were going to write for his mom, though through welling eyes I already knew. “We meet again” is all he said, and that was probably only the second or third time I’ve ever seen my dad cry. I bawled quietly as he wrote it all in the book. I never knew my grandfather, but I knew my grandmother very well. She’d always been content with my dad and us, never seemed to have any regrets. She read tons of romance novels. Sometimes she would say in a jovial tone that she’s ready to move on and I would balk, but she’d just say “You’ll understand when you’re older.” I never knew the love they shared but it must have been something powerful. They were from a generation of Brits that didn’t share their feelings as openly as later generations, so I know those few words scrawled in that book mean way more than their brevity might imply.

Caterpillars

I was just reading a story about a woman who was stressed about Caterpillars in her trees. I wish I had those problems. As a struggling single mom who lives in Los Angeles, my minimum work weeks are 60 hours just to put food on the table. My car was just demolished by a stranger in a parking lot who did not leave a note on my 19 year old car that is barely drivable, and my home is falling apart (I need new everything) To read about this woman whose biggest battle was too many caterpillars in her beautiful backyard filled with many trees who had a wonderful husband who was encouraging her on her crusade made me not only enviable of this woman’s life but made me think about changing my own. I wish I lived in an area that was not made entirely of concrete and that most of my community spoke English and I pray daily for a home with a backyard so my daughter can play and I pray for my uncooperative ex-husband to not be a deadbeat Dad. I pray for a backyard full of Caterpillars. Preparing for exam

A daughter who was concerned that her elderly mother hadn’t had an exam in several years persuaded her mother to let her make an appointment for an exam with her doctor. She invited her to spend the night and offered to drive her to the appointment with lunch afterward. On the day of the exam, they went together to the doctor’s office and while the daughter waited in the lobby the mother nervously undressed, climbed up on the table, and, with the nurse’s assistance, slid her heels into the stirrups. The doctor came in, greeted her pleasantly, then settled onto his stool. “My aren’t we looking FANCY today!” he exclaimed as he lifted the sheet. Shocked, she had no idea what the doctor meant. When the exam was over, she hurriedly got dressed and rushed out to meet her daughter in the waiting room. In a panic, she repeated what the doctor said. “What in the world do you think he meant by that?” the mother asked, bewildered. “I have no idea, Mother. What did you do to prepare for the exam?” “Well, I showered, and I used some of that feminine deodorant spray in your bathroom,” the mother replied. There was a slight pause as she looked her mother in the eye. “I don’t HAVE any feminine deodorant spray, Mother.” “Yes you do-that tall pink-and-gold can.” “Mother! That’s not deodorant. That’s gold glitter hairspray!”

Freedom: What It Means To Me By Brandi Anderson

Free-dom (free-dem) n. 1. The state or quality of being free; a) exemption or liberation from the control of some other person or arbitrary power; liberty; independence b) being able to act, move, use etc. without hindrance or restraint, confinement or repression. Freedom. What a beautiful word. A gift endowed upon us. Our birthright as an American citizen. Freedom has a very special meaning to me. I know what the price of freedom is. It does not come without a very high cost. Every man, woman, and child who lies their head down each night in peace, does so because some other American, at some time, layed down their life for them. I know this because I lost my dad in Iraq on May 2nd, 2004. He was a Navy Seabee sent there to help rebuild a country. He was killed, along with six of his fellow comrades when their camp was mortared. I will never forget the day that the Naval Chief and Chaplain showed up at my front door. I was only seven at the time but the words about to be uttered would change my life forever. The chief saluted my mom and myself, “The United States of America regrets to inform you…” My mom started to cry. I knew something very bad had happened. I was right. So much tyranny has been fought against through the years. From our WWI warriors to the young soldiers of WWII, sent overseas to save us from an inconceivable evil. They are truly ‘The Greatest Generation.’ Sadly we watch as so many of them depart us each day. Years later the Vietnam generation heeded their nation’s command. On September 11th, 2001 our beloved

24

nation was attacked. Today we continue to fight for our most sacred possession. The right to live as a free people. With freedom comes responsibility. Envied by many, challenged by some. We must never become complacent. We have a duty to preserve our way of life. It is how we repay our debt to our fathers and forefathers. It is ironic how people perceive freedom. So many take this precious gift for granted. Yet there are many others who are deeply grateful. In the last six years I have had the opportunity to meet some really special people. Some have been celebrities or military figures. But a lot have been regular folk who just ‘get it.’ I’ve met a lot of other kids like myself and their families. It grieves me when I go to events such as TAPS, Arlington, dedications and memorials. There are a lot of people who have lost someone who can never be replaced. Because of my dad’s death, I have traveled to places and met people, I very well may never have. But I would trade all of that in a moment to get my dad back. Because none of that can fill the gap left in my heart when he died. My dad and I had many great memories that never will be forgotten. Although I get really sad sometimes, I am so thankful to have known my dad. Some children were born afterward and never got that chance. So when I see the flag waving or hear the Star- Spangled Banner or pledge my allegiance to the flag, I feel a real sense of pride. I truly hope our nation never forgets because I know I never will – FREEDOM IS NOT FREE! (2011 - Brandi was an 8th grade student at Warner Christian Academy in South Daytona Beach, Florida, and won the AMVETS Post 911’s “What Freedom Means to Me” Essay Contest.)

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Senility Prayer

God grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones that I do and the eyesight to tell the difference. Now that we are older, here’s what we’ve discovered: 1. We started out with nothing, and I still have most of it. 2. Our wild oats have turned into prunes and bran. 3. We finally got our heads together; now our bodies are falling apart. 4. Funny, we don’t remember being absent-minded... 5. All reports are in; life is now officially unfair. 6. If all is not lost, where is it? 7. It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser. 8. Some days you’re the dog; some days you’re the hydrant. 9. We wish the buck stopped here; we sure could use a few... 10. Kids in the back seat cause accidents. 11. Accidents in the back seat cause...kids. 12. It’s hard to make a comeback when you haven’t been anywhere. 13. The only time the world beats a path to your door is when you’re in the bathroom. 14. If God wanted us to touch our toes, he would have put them on our knees. 15. When we are finally holding all the cards, why does everyone decide to play chess? 16. It’s not hard to meet expenses...they’re everywhere. 17. These days, we spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter...we go somewhere to get something and then wonder what we are here after. The Declaration Of Independence

The Declaration of Independence is the formal statement adopted by the Second Continental Congress in a meeting that took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 4th of July, 1776. The Declaration proclaimed that the Thirteen Colonies in the midst of battle with Great Britain would be regarded as independent sovereign states, free from British sovereignty. The independence of the thirteen states marked the beginning of the formation of the United States of America. The thirteen colonies consisted of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Prior to being called the Declaration of Independence, it was first referred to as the Lee Resolution, named after Richard Henry Lee. Thomas Jefferson drafted the original Declaration of Independence, upon the persuasion of John Adams of the committee. Congress edited Jefferson’s composition and came up with the final version. In the Declaration, Congress explained why they had voted to declare independence from Great Britain, after the American Revolutionary War broke out. Signatures of fifty-six delegates of Congress are affixed on the Declaration. John Hancock as President of Congress presumably signed first on the engrossed copy. After gaining Congress’ approval of the final wording of the Declaration on July 4, a copy was sent to be printed in Dunlap

broadsides. The original draft can be found in the Library of Congress, in its preserved form with changes made by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, and notes of Congress. The official signed version is preserved at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
