We’ll Get Through This

I’m a garbage-man, I can’t work from home and my job is an essential city service that must get done. It’s a tough job, from getting up pre-dawn to the physical toll it takes on my body, to the monotonous nature of the job, at times it’s hard to keep on going. Us garbage-men are gonna keep collecting the garbage, doctors and nurses are gonna keep doctoring and nurse-ering. It’s gonna be ok, we’re gonna make it be ok. I love my city. I love my country. I love my planet Earth. Be good to each other and we’ll get through this. Right now though, right now I am feeling an extra sense of pride and purpose as I do my work. I see the people, my people, of my city, peeking out their windows at me. They’re scared, we’re scared. Scared but resilient. (writer unknown)

It could be worse

A guy came up to a fisherman. “Having any luck?” “Not too bad”, the fisherman replied. “I haven’t had a bite in three hours.” “What’s so good about that?”, the guy asked in surprise. “You see that guy over there? Well he hasn’t had a bite in six hours.”

I’ll post all those pictures of me having fun, Wearing my happiest grin. Add a few comments to enhance the effect, And impress all my great Facebook friends. Make them think that my life is fulfilling, That I’m truly the best I can be. Fill up my page with BS and lies, So they all will be jealous of me. Or perhaps I should post some Political views, And appear quite informed and so smart. Creating a page that can trigger debate, Is an envious Facebook art. Or maybe I’ll take a more spiritual tact, Sending Blessings to all of my friends. What a kind and generous gesture, Who cares if it’s all just pretend. I could certainly post a poem of mine, And show them how deep I can be. They’ll be in such awe of the talent I have. They’ll wish they could all be like me. I wonder just how many likes I will get, And maybe a comment or two. But what if they simply ignore me today? I just don’t know what I will do. Comparing my page to all of my friends, Can cause me such worry and pain. They have far more likes and a long list of friends, It makes me feel insecure and ashamed. I wake up each day and the first thing I do, Is open my own Facebook page. And the attention it drew has such an effect, It can make or break my whole day. I could never imagine that now in old age, I’d have such a need to be liked. And discovering that people really don’t care, Could fill me with panic and fright. To be young in this world must be terribly hard, When social media sets the standard so high. And it constantly stalks and berates our poor youth, Leading to anger, withdrawal and suicide. As for myself, I took down my page, I refuse to engage in such farce. But when you are young and unsure yourself, Such rejection can tear you apart. So take care of the young that you have in your life, Don’t let social media win. Nurture and protect their fragile esteem, Be a true and accepting, real friend. What I saw in Miss Mary

In Memory of Mary Fulstone Hussman

She was in the ditch where stubborn willow clings. I stood and watched her in silent awe that day. Arms moving the clippers like the flapping wings of the hawks as they hover upon downed prey. And the Walker River marveled at her sway. Choreographing the cattle along Cunningham Lane her eye was quick on any driving day. And she’d sing out her commanding refrain to coax back a delinquent, wayward stray. And the Walker River echoed along: “Hey! Hey!” Never a time did I see her not in motion. Whatever the needed task did demand to bestow on the land a hallowed devotion come Season’s whims or the Sierra’s command. Ever in communion she worked hand in hand. Never failed to give a passing wave and smile. And though our conversations were rare. She was wise, upbeat and without guile. No wasted time her rounds could spare. Like the Walker River, her work flowed there. One eve I chanced to happen by saw them both, no pity, a trace. And their Coleville elegy caught my eye. She eased Mahlon home with tender grace. I knew not then of the enemy she faced. Her stoic resolve cloaked any outward despair for Him ahead of her she placed and only asked for a simple prayer. The Walker now her Jordan River to bear. “Death be not proud”, the poet wrote. Those of Miss Mary’s stripe, his inspiration. With tacit courage she’d met and smote

Life’s final visitor without lamentation. And the Walker River ebbed in salutation. Songs and books and film can only suggest to our imagination what her life did fully attest; that sacred place, that ethos, that spirit’s quest… For what I saw embodied in Miss Mary… was the real True West! Liquor and Women

Two guys were discussing life in general over drinks one night. “My grandfather lived to be 96.” Ninety-six? What finally got him?” “Liquor and women.” “Well, that just goes to show ya,” snickered the one guy, “both will get you in the end.” “Well actually, no, it’s not what ya think. Towards the end, Grandpa couldn’t get either one, so he just laid down and died.” MUST SELL VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE DOLLS from my huge collection (775)790-2216 “Love is not what you say. The Worst Pain

A man and a woman were discussing the worst pain a person could possibly experience. Without doubt, there is nothing more painful in life than childbirth,” said the woman. “Nonsense,” said the man, “a kick to the crotch is much more painful. Ask any guy.” “You’re so wrong,” maintained the woman, “Childbirth is far more painful.” “The man was not about to yield to her argument and announced: “I have proof that I am right.” “What proof?” she asked scornfully. “Because,” he continued, “a few years after giving birth a woman will say to her partner, ‘Do you want to try for another baby?’ But I have never, ever heard a man say, even years later, ‘You know what I’d really like? Another kick to the crotch.’ “ USA DRYWALL, REMODELS AND REPAIRS, Hanging, Taping, any texture, Additions, No Job too small, Insured and Bonded, NV#59981 (775)247-2539 RENT ME FOR WINTER CLEANING, PUT A roll-off dumpster at your home, you load, we remove (775)297-2320 THREE PIECE LIVING ROOM SET, NEEDS SOME TLC $100; Mahogany oval dining room set, 4 chairs $100; Mahogany lighted hutch, 4 doors with windows and shelves $50 (775)783-9039

Whether it may be the first raindrop that touches your cheek or the brightly shining sun that replaces the stars in an orangey filled sky, peering through your bedroom window to say “Rise and Shine!”, life has lots of surprises in store for us and each day is exciting. It all depends on our perspective towards life. Life is like a roller coaster ride...some days are fabulous while others aren’t so great. But a person is considered to be great when he is brave enough to get back up when life knocks him down. The greatness of a man is not in how many times he falls, rather it is in the courage he has to get back up whenever he falls down. Our lives may appear to be small but once we explore our surroundings, we realize there’s a whole new world waiting for us to explore it! Simple things in life can bring a great change and perk us up... it may be playing with your puppy or silently observing the nature around you... they make you feel calm and ready to take the brunt of the world again. All said and done, one thing that everyone needs is a true friend...one who is there to listen to all your stories, one who is there to pick you up whenever you fall and one is there to love you when you forget to love yourself. The key to a true friendship might be that we need to love people without any expectations and will realize that this world is truly a wonderful place with really nice people. All that we need to do is try to be a true friend to everyone without expecting anything in return and see the change in us.... All we need to ask ourselves before going to bed each night is... “How many people have smiled today because of me?” Bringing a smile on someone’s face costs nothing but gives us lots of happiness. So start smiling and explore the beautiful world God has given each one of us! Weather Conditions

A Midwest farmer was describing his lifestyle to a touring group of city folks. “One of the benefits of this profession,” he explained, “is that we have built-in weather predictions.” “What do you mean by that?” asked one inquisitive visitor. “When the cows are standing,” the farmer explained, “it means no rain is likely for the next twenty-four hours. When they’re lying down, it means it’s going to rain.” “On our bus trip,” another visitor piped in, “I saw half the herd standing and the other half lying down. What does that mean?” The farmer flashed a smile and answered, “That means half of them are wrong.” “Keep asking yourself: what am I supposed to learn from this?”

How to keep your dog safer in the car

There’s something romantic about hitting the road with your dog as your co-pilot—even if you’re only going as far as Starbucks. But—beep, beep—this is actually a huge no-no, and you aren’t doing your dog (or yourself!) any favors by offering up the passenger seat to your pup. Accidents happen. They also happen fast. Like, in a few seconds. Hundreds of pets are injured and killed every year in car accidents because pet owners get soft about safety. We don’t blame you—it’s super easy to get lax about a quick trip or ease up on the rules during a long haul. Who can say no to those sad puppy eyes? The thing is, a dog chilling in the front seat is just as much at risk during a collision as a person in the same spot. This could mean going through the windshield, hitting the dashboard or getting extreme whiplash from the impact. What could make accidents even worse for dogs, though, is lack of restraints. More often than not, dogs allowed to ride shotgun aren’t buckled up or harnessed in any way. You wouldn’t let your friend ride without a seatbelt, so why risk it with your dog? This practice is incredibly dangerous and increases the likelihood that in the event of an accident, the dog will be thrown either through the windshield or around the car, potentially causing greater injury to herself and other passengers. According to Paws to Click, an organization dedicated to pet safety during travel, if a 75-pound pup is in a car traveling 30 miles per hour and the car crashes, the dog will exert roughly 2,250 pounds of force on whatever it hits. Sound like a question on a math test? Sure. Super important to understand? You bet. That’s like getting hit in the chest with a small horse. In addition, unrestrained pets have been known to exit a vehicle after a crash and dart directly into traffic. The trauma and confusion of a collision is terrifying; dogs able to get away will want to run from the wreckage as soon as they can. Harnessing them will help prevent against injury not only during an accident but after, as well. HARLEY DAVIDSON ENGINE REBUILDING, 30+ years experience, quick turn-around! Health Humor

Q: Doctor, I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it... don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap. Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake? A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up! Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc. Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain... Good! Q: Aren’t fried foods bad for you? A: You’re not listening!!! Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they’re permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you? Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach. Q: Is chocolate bad for me? A: Are you crazy? Hello Cocoa beans ! Another vegetable!!! It’s the best feel-good food around! Q: Is swimming good for your figure? A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle? A: Hey! ‘Round’ is a shape!

Witness

The old man was a witness in a burglary trial. The defense lawyer asks Sam, “Did you see my client commit this burglary?” “Yes,” said Sam, “I saw him plainly take the goods.” The lawyer asks Sam again, “Sam, this happened at night. Are you sure you saw my client commit this crime?” “Yes,” says Sam, “I saw him do it.” Then the lawyer asks Sam, “Sam listen, you are 80 years old and your eyesight probably is bad. Just how far can you see at night?” Sam says, “I can see the moon, how far is that?” HANDYMAN, EXPERIENCED IN MOST HOME Improvements or Repairs, Quality Workmanship, Insured, NV#20101037419 (775)781-5531 or (775)450-2061 PAINTING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, STAINING, cabinets and fine finishes, free estimates, Powers Painting, NV#68615, (775)781-5531 or (775)450-2061

Going to try

Some of the most tactful people on Earth are English. One office supervisor called a secretary in to give her the bad news that she was being fired. He started the conversation with: “Miss Smith, I really don’t know how we’re going to get along without you, but starting Monday, we’re going to try.”

Some say that life will never be the same again, that we’ll forever be haunted by the tragic loss of life, untold suffering, mental anguish, diminished economic prosperity, curtailment of basic human freedoms and so much more. On the other hand, what’s unfolding as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic is a reawakened sense of life’s meaning and purpose, recognition of our hidden strengths, and willingness to tap into our core goodness and generosity. We are learning a lot about ourselves, which benefits everyone. Learning to Quickly Adapt - There is no doubt that what America and the rest of the world is experiencing is a reality that no one could have anticipated. Now, however, since there is a new reality forcing a reassessment of how to live everyday life while maintaining social distancing, businesses, factories and public and private places closed, we’re learning to quickly adapt. Long-held habits changed overnight. Commutes evaporated, replaced by the recommendation to stay in place. Rediscovering Our Humanity - While there are instances of hoarding, selfishness, greed and isolated crime, most people in America are united in a common bond: We are facing the pandemic, doing what we must to survive, and pledging to work tirelessly to find solutions to universally-experienced problems. In the process, we’re rediscovering our humanity. Discovering We are Resilient - No one knows when the threat of the COVID-19 virus will subside, or if it will resurface again, perhaps seasonally. There is an unwavering focus on developing effective treatment medications and vaccines to combat coronavirus. Dealing with such uncertainty calls into question our personal and collective ability to bounce back. Yet, in the face of the crisis, we have discovered just how resilient we are. Becoming More Generous - Parents raising their children at home during this challenging time can impart invaluable lessons about the importance of generosity by serving as examples. Put together shelf-stable items such as canned goods, flour and baking items, spices, condiments, packaged milk and other staples and deliver them to the doorstep of someone who’s unable to get out and shop, or may be ill, or is scrimping just to buy food. Embracing healthy habits - In the face of the pandemic, many people are getting motivated to make healthier choices and adopt healthier habits. Some people living with chronic conditions have found they’re also vigilant about self-care. Experts say even small changes can lead to big improvements in overall health. Realizing Life Is Precious - While no one knows how long they’ll live, everyone can recognize how precious life is — every second of it. Living in the Moment - Now, more than ever, we’re keenly aware that this moment is what we have. This is what is real, the here and now. Reconnecting with Family and Loved Ones - Granted, living in close proximity indoors can take its toll and familial arguments are unavoidable at times. Yet, even with the fact that staying inside is somewhat claustrophobic and emotions can be overwhelming in some instances, we’ve found ways to reconnect with family and loved ones — even those living in the same house. There’s more time to talk with each other at the kitchen table, while doing chores in the yard and around the house, helping each other prepare meals, clean up, watch favorite shows and

movies on TV. Learning Perspective - Things that once were annoying and stress-producing may now seem largely irrelevant. Personal peeves about a co-worker’s behavior or workplace habits are perhaps a distant memory. What siblings and family members argued about prior to COVID-19 have little bearing on what everyone is going through now. In essence, all Americans are learning perspective, as what is really important becomes abundantly clear: each other. (By Suzanne Kane) PET CARE SERVICE! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Diary of a Snow Shoveler Our traditional Winter story!

The truth is, I don’t ‘have it all together’

Recently I’ve had a few friends and family members comment to me, ‘you seem to always have it all together.’ I want people, especially other moms out there to know that, I try, but the truth is, I don’t ‘have it all together.’ In today’s world, so many parents think they need to live up to a stereotype that in my personal opinion, completely hinders our abilities to enjoy the true meaning of life. So in honor of my beautiful four children and endless built up laundry, it’s OK. It’s ok to have laundry piled to the ceiling, it’s ok to have dishes backed up in your sink, it’s ok for your house to not look like a show home on a daily basis. We all do it. Whether we admit it or not, just know when you feel overwhelmed, you are not alone. You are doing your best, so keep doing it. The happiness you bring to your children is not measured by what you own, what you buy, or what your house looks like on a daily basis. Happiness is measured by the time spent and memories made with your children and your family. Don’t ever forget that, don’t ever forget to actually love what matters. December 8: It started to snow. The first snow of the season, and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow! December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I’ve ever had. I shoveled snow for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again! What a perfect life. December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we’ll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we’ll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I’ll never want to see snow again. l don’t think that’s possible. Bob is such a nice man - I’m glad he’s our neighbor. December 14: Snow, lovely snow! 8” last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. l didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I’ll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn’t huff and puff so. December 15: 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife’s car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that’s silly. We aren’t in Alaska, after all. December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel. December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should’ve bought a wood stove, but won’t admit it to her. God I hate it when she’s right. I can’t believe I’m freezing to death in my own living room. December 20: Electricity’s back on, but had another 14” of stupid snow last night. More shoveling. Took all day. That stupid snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they’re too busy playing hockey. I think they’re lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they’re out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they’re lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he’s lying. December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white stuff fell today, and it’s so cold it probably won’t melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to use the restroom. By the time I got undressed, went and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he’s too busy. I think the jerk is lying. December 23: Only 2” of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morn-

ing. What is she, nuts? Why didn’t she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did, but I think she’s lying. December 24: 6” today. Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the jerk who drives that snowplow, I’ll drag him through the snow by his hair. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at about 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I’ve just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was busy watching for that stupid snowplow. December 25: Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the !=3D@x@!x!x1 slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she’s an idiot. If I have to watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” one more time, I’m going to kill her. December 26: Still snowed in. Why the heck did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She’s really getting on my nerves. December 27: Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze. December 28: Warmed up to above -50. Still snowed in. THAT WOMAN is driving me crazy!!!!! December 29: 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That’s the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am? December 30: Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. 9”

predicted. December 31: Set fire to what’s left of the house. No more shoveling. January 8: I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed? The Master of the house

A solicitor for the Red Cross called upon a well-to-do young couple for a donation. Hearing a commotion inside he knocked extra-loudly on the door. A somewhat disheveled man admitted him in. “What can I do for you?” he growled, clearly upset about something. “I would like to speak to the master of the house,” said the solicitor politely. “Then you’re just in time,” barked the young man. “My wife and I are settling that very question right now!” MOUNTAIN DESERT BUILDERS: SPECIALIZING in remodels, one room to the entire home, including decks, windows, doors, siding and trim, Lic.#83159, Call Eamonn (775)781-4753 The publisher does not assume any responsibility for the contents of any advertising herein, and all representation or warranties made in such advertising are those of the advertisers and not the publishers. My father was diagnosed with cancer almost 2 years ago and through the really, really hard times, I tried to keep my sanity by writing. I wrote this letter late one night when my father was going in for his 4th brain surgery. Dear Dad, I want to say thank you for being such a wonderful father. Though you’ve brought us many a struggle with your various ailments over the years, you’ve taught me more about life than any other experience could have. It’s been tough. You’ve thrown more at me than I ever thought my 21 years could handle. You’ve taught me that nightmares can come true. Finding out that you have terminal stage IV cancer, out of nowhere, on Christmas Day; what does one even do with that as part of reality? But it was from that pit of desperation and fear that hope somehow sprang forth. My life did not end at that moment and neither did yours. Dad, you’ve taught me what heroes are made of: how to go in and do what you have to do, even when it’s hard and scary and you know it’s going to be painful. As I sat at your feet through many chemo sessions, I saw an incredible person. I learned how precious life is. It was worth the toxic chemicals that were pumped into your vein. It was worth the horrible side effects including loss of hair, strength, and abscessing finger nails. As I am constantly immersing myself in the world of medicine as a pharmacy major, you’ve taught me to always remember the personal aspect of what I will soon be calling my career; the part that seems to get lost amid the exams, labs, and lectures. This is what pharmacy is about, people like you, Dad, who are alive today because of what I read in my textbooks. You’ve taught me that the world isn’t about money. What good is a 401K that gives you 10 million at age 60 if you die at 59? Life is too precious, too unpredictable, to be put on hold for 40 years. You’ve taught me never to give up...even when it seems that all odds are against you and medical professionals only give you a few months to live. Don’t believe in anyone who doesn’t believe in you. As long as their is a tiny chance, you can be the exception because you are like no one else. But, you’ve also taught me not to fear death. Fight the good fight, but know that you can never beat God. Dad, you’ve taught me how amazing and resistant the human body can be. Surgeons have opened you up and touched your lungs, heart, and brain...and they are still working enough to sustain life. God has done an incredible job in creating us, why mistreat this wonderful gift? No one is made perfect though. True beauty is shown on the inside. As I look at you now, Dad, I don’t see the pale, bald, slow man before me, I see my father; the person who taught me how to ride a two wheeler, and how to drive a standard shift car. The person who drove me to swim meets and sat there for hour upon boring hour in the hot, humid pool bleachers, never complaining. The person who built my loft freshman year at college in the hundred degree heat. The person who went to work every day, even though he felt physically worse than I could ever imagine, to his daughter a wonderful chance at a promising future. That’s who I see--and that whom I see is the most beautiful person I can imagine. Though it’s been hard getting through the days after learning of your diagnosis, I’m thankful that from this disease I have grown to appreciate every day of my life at such a young age. Love, Christine (motivateus.com)

Martin Luther King Jr.

“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction. So when Jesus says “Love your enemies,” he is setting forth a profound and ultimately inescapable admonition. Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies– or else? The chain reaction of evil– hate begetting hate, wars producing wars–must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.” “Don’t count the days, make the days count.”

Bathroom scale diet tricks

Weigh yourself fully clothed after dinner and again the next morning without clothes and before breakfast, because it’s nice to see how much weight you’ve lost overnight! Never weigh yourself with wet hair. When weighing, remove everything, including eyeglasses. In this case, blurred vision is an asset. Don’t forget to remove jewelry as it could weigh as much as a pound! Buy only cheap scales, never the medical kind. Accuracy is the enemy and high quality scales are very accurate. Always go to the bathroom first. Weigh yourself after a haircut, this is good for up to half a pound of hair (hopefully). Exhale with all your might BEFORE stepping onto the scale. (Air has weight, right?) Start out with just one foot on the scale, then holding onto a towel rod slowly edge your other foot onto the scale while slowly releasing the towel rod. Admittedly, this takes time, but it’s worth it. You will weigh at least two pounds less than if you’d stepped onto the scale normally. I struggle with type 2 bipolar disorder. Bipolar has transformed my life into a monumental challenge, and I feel guilty when it affects my family and friends. Fatigue - Smiling, interacting, being part of the family unit or social circle… all can be exhausting. Between my medications and pushing through the day, I sometimes slip into a landslide of lassitude. Naps are not only a nicety, but a necessity…or neither. Sometimes I want to withdraw to my bed to escape life for time being. Unable to face certain tasks, I avoid it all by letting my bed and sleep comfort me. Lack of Motivation/Desire - The want to participate in various activities often vanishes. A list of necessary tasks runs through my head, yet I cannot push through the barricade of depression to attempt them. Invitations from friends are declined because there are times when the effort to interact is too taxing. Simply stated, the smallest events can feel like colossal undertakings. Motherhood Gone Awry - I want to be a good mother, to keep up with my son’s academic, home, and social life. I have good intentions, but they sometimes only last a day or two before I simply cross my fingers and hope for the best. I’ve allowed my son to self-entertain more than a parent should. I lack the needed energy to debate with him why he should read a book or go ride his bike or find constructive activities in lieu of playing video games. As a result, I’ve witnessed his curiosity and diverse activities diminish over the years. Irrational Irritability - My husband and son have been the targets of the irrational irritability I sometimes experience. If my fuse is too short one day, I may lash out. The smallest inconvenience could set me off. The irritability is often combined with anxiety, and I have to render myself a timeout by leaving the room. Once alone, I may yell or cry in frustration. I don’t want to hurt the ones I love. I don’t want to have this unreasonable irritability and anger. The Upshot - My bipolar is being managed through medication and therapy, but there is no cure. Relapses happen (aka sh*t happens). I’d love to shake it off…jump up and down, flail my arms, shake my head, and dance it out. It often doesn’t work, but the adrenaline rush temporarily feels good…and I’m sure I’m a sight to be seen. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Obesity is a common, serious, and costly disease

Obesity is a public health crisis in the United States. The medical condition, which involves having an excessive amount of body fat, is linked to severe chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and cancer. It causes about 1 in 5 deaths in the U.S. each year – nearly as many as smoking, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health. The financial cost of obesity is high as well. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the United States was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical cost for people who have obesity was $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.” While researchers say the obesity epidemic began in the U.S. in the 1980s, there has been a sharp increase in obesity rates in the U.S. over the last decade. Nearly 40% of all adults over the age of 20 in the U.S. – about 93.3 million people – are currently obese, according to data published in JAMA in 2018. The Knob

A lady in her late 40’s went to a plastic surgeon for a face lift. The doctor told her of a new procedure called “The Knob.” This small knob is planted on the back of a woman’s head and can be turned to tighten up the skin to produce the effect of a brand new facelift forever. Of course, the woman wanted “The Knob.” Fifteen years later the woman went back to the surgeon with 2 problems. “All these years everything had been working just fine. I’ve had to turn the knob on lots of occasions and I’ve loved the results. But now I’ve developed two annoying problems. First of all, I’ve got these terrible bags under my eyes and the knob won’t get rid of them.” The doctor looked at her and said, “Those aren’t bags, those are your breasts.” She replied, “Well, I guess that explains the goatee.” MIGUEL’S GARDEN SERVICE, FULL LAWN MAINTENANCE, clean up, fertilizing, dead shrubs and trees pulled out, excellent references, great rates, serving Carson Valley 27+ years! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”

Etched in Stone: Part 1 by Karen Dustman

If you needed a headstone in the 1880s, you probably called on W.E. Lindsey. Lindsey, you see, was a marble cutter. He and his crew busily erected monuments at cemeteries all over Carson Valley: Genoa, Carson City, Mottsville, Fredericksburg -- even as far away as Fort Bidwell, California. It was Lindsey who installed the two beautiful tree-like monuments for the Berry family you can still see today at Genoa Cemetery. Lindsey, too, who placed the stately pillar for George Rodenbah. And in 1896, it was Lindsey who got a $500 contract for the huge “wedding cake” monument for Harriet Walley’s husband, David -- just months before Harriet’s own name would be added. (That $500 pricetag, by the way? Well, in today’s dollars that comes to more than $15,000!) So, naturally, we got curious. Just who was this Lindsey character? What fun it’s been to peel back a bit of that mystery! William Edwin Lindsey was born in Columbus, Ohio on August 18, 1842. At the age of 21, he joined the U.S. Infantry during the Civil War. He mustered-in as a private with the 46th Illinois Volunteers at Hebron, Mississippi, and mustered-out as a corporal two years later at Baton Rouge. After he left the service, Lindsey took up the trade of marblecutting back in Illinois. But by 1870 he had moved west to Visalia, California, and the 1880 Census found him – and now his wife, Martha -- living in Cedarville, Modoc County, where he continued working as a marble-cutter. Then in late December, 1883, Lindsey showed up in the Reno news. And here’s the most news-worthy part: Lindsey was “think[ing] seriously of establishing [a] marble works” in Reno. Lindsey did just that, opening the “Reno Pioneer Marble Works” on Virginia Street in July, 1884 right next door to the Odd Fellows building. That September he moved to a new brick building on the west side of Virginia near Second Street. By now Lindsey had 18 years of experience under his belt, and was considered “one of the most skilled marble cutters on the coasts.” His advertisements promised: “Nothing but the best Italian marble used.” As for bases, he used the “best native granite,” sourced from the foot of Kingsbury Grade. Pretty soon Lindsey was so busy erecting headstones that in March, 1885, his father moved out from California to help him, touring “the northern country” to solicit orders for his son’s

22

business. Lindsey hired a marble-cutter from Chicago to work in his shop, and took off himself for Modoc, Lassen, and Plumas Counties, placing headstones and taking new orders. By early December, 1885, Lindsey was “shipping $1,000 worth of marble to the northern country.” A small fortune, for the day. Karen writes frequently about fascinating folks and longforgotten tales. An American woman goes to England to attend a 2-week company training session. Her husband drives her to the airport and wishes her to have a good trip. The wife answers, “Thank you honey, what would you like me to bring for you?” The husband laughs and says, “An English girl.” The woman kept quiet and left. Two weeks later he picks her up in the airport and asks, “So, honey, how was the trip?” “Very good, thank you.” “And, what happened to my present?” “Which present?” She asked. “The one I asked for - the English girl!” “Oh, that,” she said, “Well, I did what I could, now we have to wait a few months to see if it is a girl.” CARETAKER POSITION WANTED, 65 YEAR OLD SINGLE male, no pets, doesn’t smoke or drink, leave a message and I will call you back (775)901-3566 ALMOST NEW HOOVER UPRIGHT BAGLESS “WIND Tunnel” vacuum with retractable cord, good condition $50, Carson City (775)762-2220 HOME IN NEED OF IMPROVEMENT? “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” SFGTD

New normal for educators poem

Today, my classroom didn’t lose a pencil, I didn’t throw away any glue. I didn’t help a child, Who didn’t know what to do. Today, my crayons went unused, And the scissors stayed nice and sharp, But everywhere else, Things seemed to be falling apart. The world went on turning, As people stayed in their homes, But today my classroom stayed empty, Silent past the morning bell tone. Today, I didn’t hug my students. Or tell them each I loved them. I didn’t teach reading, writing, Or how to decompose 10. Today, I didn’t see their faces, Beyond a computer screen, I didn’t spend my day Nursing emotions unseen. The world went on turning, As people stayed in their homes. But today my classroom stayed empty, Silent past the morning bell tone. Today, I learned that the doors would stay locked, Because this disease shows no slack. How many pencils I would give, Just to have my students back. I am God. Today I will be handling all of your problems. Please remember that I do not need your help. If life happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do not attempt to resolve it. Kindly put it in the SFGTD (something for God to do) box. All situations will be resolved, but in My time, not yours. Once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold onto it by worrying about it. Instead, focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your life now. If you find yourself stuck in traffic, don’t despair. There are people in this world for which driving is an unheard of privilege. Should you have a bad day at work, think of the man who has been out of work for years. Should you despair over a relationship gone bad, think of the person who has never known what it’s like to love and be loved in return. Should you grieve the passing of another weekend, think of the woman in dire straits, working twelve hours a day, seven days a week to feed her children. Should your car break down, leaving you miles away from assistance, think of the paraplegic who would love the opportunity to take that walk. Should you notice a new gray hair in the mirror, think of the cancer patient in chemo who wishes she had hair to examine. Should you find yourself at a loss and pondering what is life all about, asking what is my purpose? Be thankful. There are those who didn’t live long enough to get the opportunity. Should you find yourself the victim of other people’s bitterness, ignorance, smallness or insecurities, remember, things could be worse. You could be one of them! Get on the ball

Once there was a golfer whose drive landed on an anthill. Rather than move the ball, he decided to hit it where it lay. He gave a mighty swing. Clouds of dirt and sand and ants exploded from the spot. Everything but the golf ball. It sat in the same spot. So he lined up and tried another shot. Clouds of dirt and sand and ants went flying again. The golf ball didn’t even wiggle. Two ants survived. One dazed ant said to the other, “Whoa! What are we going to do?” Said the other ant, “I don’t know about you, but I’m going to get on the ball.”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Someone paid for groceries today, and I couldn’t stop crying

Where do Brussels Sprouts get their name?

Things have been rough lately. Like, grocery shopping at the dollar store rough. Borrowing money from my boss to pay rent rough. We were shopping for some little things today; burger buns, potatoes and some cheese. The last behind us had a grocery basket of food and told us to go ahead of her, because we only had a few things. After we were all rung up, she said she would pay for our items with hers. I started to choke up, so I thanked her and we left. I don’t know why it hit so hard but I sincerely was on the verge of sobbing by the time we got to my car. But I went right back after to thank her properly. I was already in tears, and the checkout lady was still ringing her up. I asked her if I could hug her. She said yes and actually really held me. I was crying and telling her how much her gesture meant to me, and that things had been so rough. I know there were lines of people, and I got quite a few looks. I probably looked ridiculous. Some kid hugging a stranger and sobbing her eyes out in a crowded grocery store, and thanking her. But I didn’t care. I just wanted her to know how much it meant, and how badly I needed a boost like that. A reminder that there is still good, even when things feel the worst. I promise that once I am back on my feet, I will return the favor as best as I can. I will do what she did. Hopefully, I will help someone in need. Or maybe inspire them to do the same. Just wanted to share. This sweet old lady made my day. Made my week. Made me so happy, and emotional; when I have been so stressed, and scared. It made me smile more than I have in what feels like a long time.

There’s fried Brussels sprout tacos. There’s Brussels sproutand-leek slaw. There’s practically endless ways we love this satisfying, cruciferous vegetable. But no matter how you bake, sautée, or fry ‘em up, one thing remains the same: the B in “Brussels” sprouts is always capitalized. Why, pray tell, is that? It has to do with the origin of how Brussels sprouts got their name. Brussels sprouts are named after the fact that they were cultivated in Belgium in the 16th century. Knowing this little fact will also help you remember that it’s Brussels sprouts, not Brussel sprouts, and it’s Brussels sprout even if you’re only referring to one sprout.” Brussels, in addition to being the capital of Belgium, also refers to the Brussels-Capital region, which includes 19 municipalities. According to the New World Encyclopedia, forerunners to what we now know as Brussels sprouts were likely around as far back as ancient Rome. (Southern Living)

6 ways cats are just like dogs, only better

Are you tired of people who insist that dogs are the most wonderful creatures on the planet, while cats are snotty and aloof and just not worthy of being called pets? Well, so am I. In an attempt to help dog people understand how much alike cats and dogs are, I’ve developed this handy list of talking points. Here are some reasons cats are just like dogs, only better. 1. They both smell - Cats smell like fresh-cut hay, while dogs smell like stale corn chips — and whatever nasty offal they rolled around in while they were outside. 2. They’re both attention seekers - Dogs yap and whine when they want your attention. Cats sit on their perch of choice and stare holes into the back of your head. 3. They’re both loyal - Dogs’ loyalty is fawning and awestruck, but you have to earn cats’ loyalty by treating them with respect and unconditional love. 4. They both have needs - Dogs are so needy that they’re always in your face and slobbering all over you. Cats just sit in your lap and knead. 5. They both pee indoors - Cats, being the classy creatures they are, deposit their urine in a litter box and bury it when they’re finished. Very few dogs do the same. 6. They both chew things - Cats chew on expendable things like paper and cardboard. Dogs chew on expensive things like shoes and furniture. (catster.com) Happy Holidays from ICG Construction!
