“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”
Best of Reno Presented by:
reno gazette journal
When Mozart passed away, ...
he was buried in a churchyard. A couple days later, the town drunk was walking through the cemetery and heard some strange noises coming from the area where Mozart was buried. Terrified, the drunk ran and got the priest to come and listen to it. The priest bent close to the grave and heard some faint, unrecognizable music coming from the grave. Frightened, the priest ran and got the town magistrate. When the magistrate arrived, he bent his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, “Ah, yes, that’s Mozart’s Ninth Symphony, being played backwards.” He listened a while longer, and said, “There’s the Eighth Symphony, And it’s backwards, too. Most puzzling.” So, the magistrate kept listening; “There’s the Seventh... the Sixth...the Fifth...” Suddenly the realization of what was happening dawned on the magistrate; he stood up and announced to the crowd that had gathered in the cemetery. “My fellow citizens, there’s nothing to worry about. It’s just Mozart decomposing.” 1910 PORCELAIN DOLL, 26” TALL, HAZEL EYES that open and close $1,550 (775)552-5002

Just a week before Christmas I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room, and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out. “What are you doing?” I started to ask him. The words choked in my throat, as I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement, TEACH THE CHILDREN! I was puzzled: What did he mean? He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood there bewildered, Santa said, Teach the Children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that a now-a-day Christmas has forgotten! Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it on the mantle. Teach the Children that the pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, depicting the everlasting hope of mankind. All the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man’s thoughts turning toward heaven. He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR. Teach the Children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Savior for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of that promise. He then reached into the bag and pulled out a CANDLE. Teach the Children that the candle symbolizes that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of He who displaces the darkness. Once again he reached into his bag and then removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree. Teach the Children that the wreath symbolizes the eternal nature of love. Real love never ceases. Love is one continuous round of affection. He then pulled out from his bag an ornament of HIMSELF. Teach the Children that Santa Claus symbolizes the generosity and good will we feel during the month of December. He reached in again and pulled out a HOLLY LEAF.
Visit us at www.SierraScoop.com
Teach the Children the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Savior. The red holly berries represent bloodshed by Him. Next he pulled out a GIFT from the bag and said, “Teach the Children that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift. Teach the Children that the wise men bowed before the holy babe and presented Him with gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We should give gifts in the same spirit as the wise men.” Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a CANDY CANE and hung it on the tree. Teach the Children that the candy cane represents the shepherd’s crook. The crook on the shepherd’s staff helps bring back strayed sheep from the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother’s keeper. He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL. Teach the Children that it was the angels that heralded in the glorious news of the Savior’s birth. The angels sang ‘Glory to God in the highest, on earth, peace and good will.’ Suddenly I heard a soft twinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a BELL. Teach the Children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of a bell, it should bring people to the fold. The bell symbolizes guidance and return. Santa looked at the tree and was pleased. He looked
back at me and I saw the twinkle was back in his eyes. He said, “Remember, teach the Children the true meaning of Christmas, and not to put me in the center, for I am but a humble servant of the ONE WHO IS, and I bow down and worship Him, our Lord, our God. What Was Life Like In 1918?
It was a lot less crowded back then – we only had 103.2 million residents living in the S. Today, there are 325.4 million people living here! In 1918, the average life expectancy in the S. dropped by 12 years! Men only lived an average of 36.6 years, and women only lived 42.2 years. A lot of this was due to the number of lives lost in WWI, and the number of lives claimed by the 1918 flu pandemic. The Flu Pandemic began in January, 1918, and lasted through December, 1920. The disease was first observed in Haskell County, Kansas, and it quickly spread around the world. About 500 million people around the world were infected, and they estimate that it resulted in the deaths of 50-100 million. 664,076 Model T Fords were built and they were still selling for only $500! About 6.1 million cars were registered in the U.S.A. On January 1, the first gasoline pipeline began transporting gasoline through a three-inch pipe over 40 miles, from Salt Creek to Casper, Wyoming. Velveeta cheese was created by Emil Frey of the Monroe Cheese Company, in June of 1918. The brand was later sold to Kraft Foods, in 1927. Opha May Johnson became the first female U.S. Marine, in August of 1918. More than 300 women joined the Marines during WWI. Union wages in New York City were: Bricklayers at $0.81 per hour, Carpenters at $0.69 per hour, Painters at $0.63 per hour, Plumbers at $0.75 per hour, Structural steel workers at $0.80 per hour. American farmers had an average pay of $37.50 per month, with board. Without board, their average pay was $48.50 per month. California’s minimum wage rose to $0.21 per hour. In May of 1918, Chevrolet Motor Company merged with General Motors (GM) and became a division of GM. The number one hit record was titled “Tiger Rag”, by the “Original Dixieland Jazz Band”. Daylight Savings Time first went into effect on March 31, 1918. On May 13, the first airmail stamps were issued. They were priced at $0.24 each. On May 15, the first regular airmail service between New York and Washington DC was inaugurated. The average prices for these items were: Round steak sold for 37 cents a pound, Eggs were 48 cents per dozen, Milk was 56 cents a gallon, A loaf of bread cost 10 cents, Coffee was 30 cents a pound, A ten pound bag of potatoes cost 32 cents, Gasoline sold for 43½ cents per gallon, A first class postage stamp sold for 3 cents, A movie ticket went for 7 cents. As you can see, life in America has really changed over

Clark Gable was a true gentleman. And we have that on the very best authority: straight from Minden’s own early Justice of the Peace, Walt Fisher. One of Fisher’s very first official acts as a judge was to perform the 1955 marriage of the much-married Gable to actress Kay Williams. The Douglas County Clerk pulled a bit of a fast one when Gable and Williams showed up to apply for a marriage license. It was after hours, so she dialed up Judge Fisher and asked if a couple could come to his home on Mono Avenue to be married. “Fine,” he said. “Send them over.” The clerk didn’t bother to mention who it was she was sending. So imagine Fisher’s surprise when he opened the door! The couple had brought their own witnesses, so there was no need to call Fisher’s wife from the back room. Gable was polite, Judge Fisher later recalled — a true gentleman. The service was quickly over, and Gable quietly tucked $500 in the judge’s hand as the newlyweds departed. The judge’s wife had no idea who had been in her house until several minutes after they’d left (an omission for which she gave the judge an earful later!) It was Gable’s fifth marriage, and Kay’s third. Perhaps it was Judge Fisher’s special touch; this marriage stuck, lasting until Gable died in 1960. This same modest home across from the Elementary School was also where one very drunk woman driver was hauled by arresting officers at 4:30 in the morning. She’d been arrested after backing her vehicle away from a bar and directly into a parked car. Given the wee hour, Judge Fisher answered his door clad in a black bathrobe. There stood the arresting officers with the inebriated woman — so inebriated that she mistook Fisher in his black bathrobe for a Catholic priest. After being firmly assured that the judge was not a priest, she berated him for impersonating one. Hours later in Fisher’s courtroom, the woman was still too tipsy to face the legal music. As the RecordCourier reported, the ever-patient Judge Fisher simply ordered “another 24 hours free lodging in the calaboose.” And with that plus a $100 fine, justice was served. Walt’s wife, Alice, passed away in December, 1960. Walt continued to serve on the bench until poor health finally forced his retirement in 1961, and he passed away in 1963.Walt and Alice are both buried at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City, their simple joint stone a sweet reminder of their fascinating lives. A boy was teaching a girl arithmetic, he said it was his mission. And both together smiled and said, “That’s multiplication.” Then her Dad appeared upon the scene and made a quick decision. He kicked that boy three blocks away and said, “That’s long division!”

“My New Year’s resolution is to lose weight and keep it off!” Heard this before? Sustaining a healthy weight is one of the single most challenging goals. All excess weight related conditions are on a sharp incline including type 2 diabetes, obesity (now 40% of Americans), metabolic syndrome, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, osteoarthritis, and more. Why are making long-lasting lifestyle changes so difficult? Why do we struggle with changing negative behavior even if we know they are harmful to ourselves? The metaphor about the elephant and the rider comes to mind describing the dynamic relationship of the two sides of our brain; the emotional side that feels pain and pleasure, and the rational side, also known as the reflective or conscious side. The rider (the leader), represents the logical and practical side, is small relative to the large elephant, who represents the emotional side. With every disagreement, the rider will always fall short of the big elephant. Change is easier when the elephant and rider move together. Changing behavior requires directing the Rider, motivating the Elephant, and shaping the Path. Do all three at once, and dramatic change can happen! Finding a healthy weight management plan that meets your goals and fits your lifestyle can be achieved by keeping it simple and real. Nourish your hunger with whole foods rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, healthy fats, and fiber to keep your immune system strong and your body energized throughout the day! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Maybe
Maybe - we were supposed to meet the wrong people before meeting the right one so that, when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift. Maybe - when the door of happiness closes, another opens; but, often times, we look so long at the closed door that we don’t even see the new one which has been opened for us. Maybe - it is true that we don’t know what we have until we lose it, but it is also true that we don’t know what we have been missing until it arrives. Maybe - the happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Maybe - the brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; after all, you can’t go on successfully in life until you let go of your past mistakes, failures and heartaches. Maybe - you should dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go, be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you dream of and want to do. Maybe - there are moments in life when you miss someone -- a parent, a spouse, a friend, a child -- so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real, so that once they are around you appreciate them more. Maybe - the best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch and swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you’ve ever had. Maybe - you should always try to put yourself in others’ shoes. If you feel that something could hurt you, it probably will hurt the other person, too. Maybe - you should do something nice for someone every single day, even if it is simply to leave them alone. Maybe - giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Don’t expect love in return; just wait for it to grow in their heart; but, if it doesn’t, be content that it grew in yours. Maybe - happiness waits for all those who cry, all those who hurt, all those who have searched, and all those who have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of all the people who have touched their lives. Maybe - you shouldn’t go for looks; they can deceive; don’t go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile. Maybe - you should hope for enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Preacher was Dying
An old preacher was dying. He sent a message for his banker and his lawyer, both church members, to come to his home. When they arrived, they were ushered up to his bedroom. As they entered the room, the preacher held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. The preacher grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled, and stared at the ceiling. For a time, no one said anything. Both the banker and lawyer were touched and flattered that the preacher would ask them to be with him during his final moments. They were also puzzled; the preacher had never given them any indication that he particularly liked either of them. They both remembered his many long, uncomfortable sermons about greed, covetousness, and avaricious behavior that made them squirm in their seats. Finally, the banker said, “Preacher, why did you ask us to come?” The old preacher mustered up his strength and then said weakly, “Jesus died between two thieves, and that’s how I want to go.”
Happy New Year - January 1, 2019
happy. Maybe - you should try to live your life to the fullest because when you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling but when you die, you can be the one who is smiling and everyone around you crying. Maybe - you could call those people who mean something to you, to those who have touched your life, to those who can and do make you smile when you really need it, to those who make you see the brighter side of things when you are really down, and to all those whom you want to know that you appreciate them and their friendship. Maybe. Is today the day you change your “Maybe” to “Today”? What to Get the Wife With Everything!
Did you hear about the fellow that was talking to his buddy, and he said, “I don’t know what to get my wife for her birthday. She has everything, and besides, she can afford to buy anything she wants, so I’m stumped.” His buddy said, “I have an idea. Why don’t you make up a certificate that says she can have two hours of romance, any way she wants it. She’ll probably be thrilled!” So the first fella did just that. The next day his buddy asked, “Well, did you take my suggestion? How’d it turn out?” “She loved it. She jumped up, thanked me, kissed me on the lips, and ran out the door yelling - I’ll see you in two hours!” PIONEER GLASS PLUS, RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, emergency services, fair prices, dependable quick service, quality work, 45 years experience, Frank Boudreau, owner NV#7876 (775)720-2373

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” In a World of 100 People
If we could shrink the earth’s population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratio remaining the same, it would look something like the list which follows: 57 Asians - 21 Europeans - 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south - 8 Africans - 52 would be female - 48 would be male - 70 would be non-white - 30 would be white - 70 would be non-Christian - 30 would be Christian. 6 people would possess 59% of the entire world’s wealth and all 6 would be from the United States. 80 would live in substandard housing - 70 would be unable to read - 50 would suffer from malnutrition - 1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth - 2 would own a computer - 1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education. When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent. The following is also something to ponder... If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than many others. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation... you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace ... you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. If your parents are still alive and still married ... you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada. If you can read this message, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all. STOP ... and be THANKFUL. Hot Horseradish
A minister who was very fond of pure, hot horseradish always kept a bottle of it on his dining room table. Once, at dinner, he offered some to a guest, who took a big spoonful. The guest let out a huge gasp. When he was finally able to speak, he choked out, “I’ve heard many ministers preach hellfire, but you are the first one I’ve met who passes out a sample of it.” A BAD TILE JOB CAN BE LIKE A BAD HAIRCUT, but it doesn’t grow back, so don’t get hacked! I Want to Live my Next Life Backwards
You start out dead and get that out of the way. Then you wake up in an old age home feeling better every day. Then you get kicked out for being too healthy. Enjoy your retirement and collect your pension. Then when you start work, you get a gold watch on your first day. You work 40 years until you’re too young to work. You get ready for High School: drink alcohol, party, and you’re generally promiscuous. Then you go to primary school, you become a kid, you play, and you have no responsibilities. Then you become a baby, and then . . . You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in luxury, in spalike conditions – central heating, room service on tap, and then… You finish off with “whoopee”. I rest my case. Country Road
I was driving my father and grandfather down a rough country road. My inexperience in handling Grandpa’s four-wheel-drive vehicle made for a particularly bouncy ride. Embarrassed, I offered a lame excuse, “The sun shadows through the trees make it hard for me to see all the potholes.” “Don’t worry,” Grandpa said. “You’re gettin’ most of ‘em.”

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Being a Friend
One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? What a life? He must really be a nerd.” I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friend’s tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives.” He looked at me and said, “Hey thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. We hung around together all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him. Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, “Darn boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!” He just laughed and handed me half the books. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn’t me having to get up there and speak. Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.

He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him! Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So, I smacked him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. “Thanks,” he said. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach…but mostly your friends.” I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story.” I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his mom wouldn’t have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.” I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his mom and dad looking at me and smiling that
same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth. Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person’s life. For better or for worse. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Hard to stand up after long periods of sitting?
How to Treat Fingertip Cracks
Cracking on the fingertips can make everyday activity extremely painful. For some people, fingertip cracks only occur in the dry winter months, but other suffer from this year-round. Skin conditions, such as eczema, exposure to the elements and frequent hand-washing with harsh cleansing products can all contribute to fingertip cracks. Treating the cracks, you already have is the first step, but everyday prevention of new cracks should keep your hands in tip-top shape. Seal the fingertip cracks temporarily with a liquid bandage. Apply first aid antibiotic ointment to the fingertip cracks twice daily. Use a product with 1 percent hydrocortisone twice a day to heal the cracks. Slather hands with a layer of a gentle barrier hand cream on top of a hydrocortisone product at night. Wear cotton gloves while you sleep to help the products penetrate the skin. PET CARE SERVICE! Sitting gets harder as you get older: To understand this phenomenon and why doctors blame “age” for this phenomenon, you need to understand one key principle. Sitting for prolonged periods trains your body to get really good at one thing: sitting. The longer you train to sit, the easier it gets to sit. The easier it is to sit, the harder it gets to stand up and walk properly. When you’re younger, this doesn’t seem to be nearly as big an issue. Your physical activity levels as a kid or teenager are generally much higher and your body’s general ability to adapt to physical demands is just plain better. As you get older and sit in a chair for 8-18 hours a day, 5 days a week, the muscles that control your hip joints get better and better at sitting. Your body’s ability to quickly transition to other positions is not as good - because you have not actively trained your body to do it. The sitting position is one that places your hip joints in “flexion” (i.e. knees come closer to your chest). The standing position requires hip extension (i.e. knees further from chest). Unfortunately, sitting squashes the life out of muscles that help give you hip extension and functionally “shortens” the muscles that give you hip flexion (they aren’t physically shorter but won’t be able to give you a full functional range motion -- making them seem “short”). You now have hip extensors that have been squashed to death on the back of your hips. On the front of your hips, your hip flexors are locked into shortened positions. You are literally locked in place when you attempt to stand up. Funny Facebook Quotes, Etc.
If Facebook has taught us anything it’s that a lot of people aren’t quite ready for a spelling bee. A long time ago I used to have a life, until someone told me to create a Facebook account. A day without Facebook is like a day without drama...I mean sunshine...yeah a day without sunshine. Deleting your Facebook is like running away from home. You’re only doing it for attention and you’ll be back in a day. Facebook is like a fridge. When you’re bored you keep opening and closing it every few minutes to see if there’s anything good in it. I want to change my name on Facebook to “Nobody,” so when I see someone posting something stupid, I can Like their post and it will say “Nobody likes this.” I’m not addicted to Facebook! You know, I just use it whenever I have time. Lunch time, break time, bed time, off time, that time, this time, any time, all the time! Sunglasses: allowing you to stare at people without getting caught. It’s like Facebook in real life. Say it to my face, not through your status! If I don’t log into Facebook two days in a row, call the police, someone must’ve kidnapped me! Facebook needs three buttons, “Like”, “Dislike” and “Stop being stupid.” There’s life without Facebook and Internet? Really? Send me the link. I now pronounce you man and wife, you may now change your Facebook status. Who needs television when you have so much drama on Facebook. Some people should consider having multiple Face-

book accounts to go along with their multiple personalities. It’s almost bed time, so I’ll just check my e-mail, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and watch a season of my favorite show on Netflix real quick. How They Make Rubber Gloves
A dentist was getting ready to clean an elderly lady’s teeth. He noticed that she was a little nervous, so he began to tell her a story as he was putting on his surgical gloves... “Do you know how they make these rubber gloves?” She said, “No?” “Well”, he spoofed, “down in Mexico they have this big building set up with a large tank of latex, and the workers are all picked according to hand size. Each individual walks up to the tank, dips their hands in, and then walk around for a bit while the latex sets up and dries right onto their hands! Then they peel off the gloves and throw them into the big ‘Finished Goods Crate’ and start the process all over again.” And she didn’t laugh a bit!!! Five minutes later, during the procedure, he had to stop cleaning her teeth because she burst out laughing. The old woman blushed and exclaimed, “I just suddenly thought about how they must make protection sheaths for men!” HANDYMAN FOR ALL YOUR OUTSIDE NEEDS, yard cleanup, power wash, fence repair, minor jobs, free estimates, NV#11376PC (775)220-3363

Rise in online shopping fraud, Nevada at major risk
Experts say e-commerce fraud is expected to increase again this year, after jumping by 30% last year. Credit card fraud was the biggest form of identity theft in 2017. Last year, there were over 130,000 thousand cases of credit card fraud in the United States. Many of those cases were in Nevada, making the state one of the worst in the nation for online shopping safety. In fact, Minden is ranked as one of the riskiest cities in the nation for online shopping fraud. Minden is the ideal location for scammers because they can reship stolen merchandise before victims or card issuers can take action. Lack of basic financial literacy is one of the main reasons for the increase in online fraud. Nevada ranked 39th in the nation for overall financial literacy, according to the data and finance website wallet hub. Using verified vendors like PayPal or Visa Pay can help reduce instances of fraud and protect your information by securing it in one location.

Starting a Family
We are sitting at lunch when my friend casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of “starting a family”. “We’re taking a survey,” she says, half-joking. “Do you think I should have a baby?” “A child will change your life,” I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral. “I know,” she says, “with a child, there’s no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous vacations.” But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. As a mother, I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but that becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will forever be vulnerable. I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without asking “What if that had been MY

child?”; that every plane crash, every house fire will haunt her; that when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die. I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub; that an urgent call of “MOM!” will cause her to drop a soufflé or her best crystal without a moment’s hesitation. I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood and having a child. She might arrange for childcare, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think of her baby’s sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of her discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right. I want my friend to know that everyday decisions will no longer be routine-that a five-year-old boy’s desire to go to the men’s room rather than the women’s at McDonald’s will become a major dilemma; that right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom.

However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother. Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give it up in a moment to save her offspring but will also begin to hope for more years - not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her child accomplish theirs. I want her to know that a caesarian scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor. My friend’s relationship with her husband will change, but not in the way she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is careful to powder the baby or who never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again...for reasons she would now find very unromantic. I wish my friend could sense the bond she will feel with mothers throughout history who have tried to stop war, prejudice and drunk driving. I hope she will understand why I can think rationally about most issues but become temporarily insane when I discuss the threat of nuclear war to my children’s future. I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft

fur of a dog or a cat for the first time. I want her to taste a mother’s joy so real that it actually hurts. My friend’s quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. “You’ll never regret it,” I finally say. Then I reach across the table, squeeze my friend’s hand and offer a silent prayer for her, and for me, and for all of the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this most wonderful of callings. Signs Found in the Kitchen
So this isn’t Home Sweet Home... Adjust! Ring bell for maid service. If no answer, do it yourself! I clean house every other day. Today is the other day. If you write in the dust, please don’t date it! I would cook dinner, but I can’t find the can opener! A clean kitchen is the sign of a wasted life. My house was clean last week, too bad you missed it! I came, I saw, I decided to order take out. If you don’t like my standards of cooking... lower your standards. Although you’ll find our house a mess, Come in, sit down, converse. It doesn’t always look like this: Some days it’s even worse. A messy kitchen is a happy kitchen, and this kitchen is delirious. A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand! Thou shalt not weigh more than thy refrigerator. Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused. Countless number of people have eaten in this kitchen and gone on to lead normal lives. My next house will have no kitchen... just vending machines. I’d live life in the fast lane, but I am married to a speed bump. Mother does not live here anymore, clean up your own mess. Martha Stewart doesn’t live here!!
