Wake-up Call

I dreamt I was standing at the pearly gates. The angelic gate keeper asked, “Who has this one inspired?” I sensed that my entry and happiness there depended on a show of hands. God stood there with his hands behind his back. Finally I realized it would be pretty hard to inspire God. Oh no!” I thought, “Am I supposed to inspire others?!” Frantically, as I looked around for hands held high, I woke up in a sweat. Wiping my forehead I thought, “Thank God it was only a dream!” But I still have this strange urge to inspire someone. I wonder: would kindness inspire?, would bringing joy? would being helpful? would honesty help? would being hard working inspire? So many questions... maybe, as a backup, I could train my dog to raise his paw on command.

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Dear Me,

Right now you’re probably sitting alone wondering how life got to be this way. You’re probably wondering how you got here. Well I may not know the answers to those questions, but I do know that you went through too much to feel sorry now. You may have had a rough time in school and you may have hated life more often than not, but guess what? You’re here now. All that stuff that made you feel like you weren’t worth it and wouldn’t amount to anything? It’s nothing now. You made it through, you overcame it all. No one else. You. Whatever you’re dealing with right now is the same way. You might not be happy. You might think that you’re watching your life’s reruns, but at no point is it ever okay to give up. You never did before, so why start now? You’ve come too far and hurt too much to quit now. The only thing holding you back from whatever you want is yourself. Get up. Do what you need to do, no point in putting it off. You’re a success already, you just have to realize it. I believe in you. You’ve got this. Sincerely, You CUSTOM SHIRTS, JACKETS, HATS, BAGS for your corporate event, fundraiser, family gathering, promotional event, etc. All sizes and varieties are available. Aging Quotes

I have found at my age that going bra-less pulls all the wrinkles out of my face. You’re getting old when you don’t care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don’t have to go along. Statistics show that at the age of seventy, there are five women to every man. Isn’t that an ironic time for a guy to get those odds? Middle age is when it takes longer to rest than to get tired. By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he’s too old to go anywhere. Middle age is when you have stopped growing at both ends, and have begun to grow in the middle. Someone has described heaven as a family reunion that never ends. What could hell possibly be like? Home videos of the same reunion? A man has reached middle age when he is cautioned to slow down by his doctor instead of by the police. Middle age is having a choice of two temptations and choosing the one that will get you home earlier. You know you’re into middle age when you realize that caution is the only thing you care to exercise. At my age, “getting a little action” means I don’t need to take a laxative. Don’t worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you. Keep Fighting

Don’t allow the negative things in your life to discount the positive ones. Don’t let a bad day or month or year make you feel like you have a bad life. Instead of focusing on everything that’s going wrong, start holding onto all of the things that are going right. You may be struggling, but there is still so much to keep fighting for — there is still so much more to life than this pain. And if you keep picking yourself back up and pushing forward, no matter how difficult things are, you will discover it. Maybe not tomorrow or next week or a year from now, but someday soon, things will get better. Someday soon, you will find freedom from this darkness. And when you do, you’ll look back on these days and wonder how you could have doubted your resilience. You’ll look back and marvel at how something as small as refusing to give up could transform your life in such a substantial way. “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.” Mark Twain

Let’s keep the COVID-19 pandemic in perspective. To say I’ve seen a lot in my 95 years is an understatement. Those of us who are dang-near a century old have a few stories to tell. Just ask us. If you asked me a year ago if I’d seen it all, I would have said yes. After all, I’ve lived through WWII, the Great Depression, Vietnam, 9/11 and multiple recessions. I’ve seen civil riots, natural disasters and decades of political discord. I watched Americans moon walk (including Michael Jackson) and the evolution of space-age computers. I dodged the Asian flu, swine flu, HIV and Ebola. As a career educator and coach, I’ve built countless athletic programs, mentored and coached thousands, from college to Olympic-level. I’ve been married for a total of 60 years and outlived both wives. I’ve had my share of loves and losses, to include children. Despite my challenges, I’m one of the more optimistic people you’ll meet. I “carpe diem” and encourage others to do the same. I was the first paid activities director at Glencroft Senior Living (now Glencroft Center for Modern Aging) in Glendale, Arizona, where I still live today. For 10 years, it was my job to encourage residents to get out and live — not just wait for the inevitable. At Glencroft, we eat, pray, exercise, learn, create, laugh and cry together. The freedom to bond with our peers is something we took for granted, until now. We understood it was necessary when Glencroft locked down. Heck, they did a lot to keep us safe. They delivered meals and activities, distributed masks and sanitizer. The staff often checked in on us. They broadcast workouts to our rooms so we could stay active. Despite their efforts, I missed my old routine and my friends. Even the church was shut down, and I’m very much into my church program. Isolation made me struggle with negative thoughts for the first time in my life. I didn’t expect that. At 95, there aren’t many “firsts” left. I know many are afraid of COVID-19, as it hits our population harder than most. Many my age are afraid to die. But I don’t fear it. When I hear of others passing from COVID-19, I know that’s just the way of life at this end of it. I’m not hardened to it, I’m just ready for it. When the vaccine comes, I’ll take it like I take the flu shot and see what happens. I’m cautious. I wash my hands and wear a mask. The possibility of getting sick is always there. You have to discipline yourself. It’s easy to become complacent. What I’d say to younger generations. On a global scale, I’m disappointed by the lack of collaboration in 2020. My wish would be that the whole world would work together. But the way the politics are, there isn’t much hope for that. Political parties don’t want the other side to achieve anything. As for the racial unrest we’ve seen this year, I don’t think there’s any comparison between now and the civil rights era. I found a recent map showing the rate of hate crimes across America. It looks like the U.S. has a bad case of measles. My advice to the younger generation is you need to be involved and express yourself by voting. To attack the next guy if he disagrees with you isn’t going to get you far. You can’t just hammer a guy. There are a few things in life, even in religion, where extremes are too much. continued....

Attitude is a choice. I have a choice to be happy or sad, fearful or optimistic. To enjoy living or to sit around and wait to die. People ask me if there’s anything left on my bucket list. My bucket doesn’t have a bottom. I’ll never get it all done. In 2021, I’ll embrace whatever comes my way. I just hope I can still drive.| Wishing you all a healthy and happy New Year, from the not-so-Silent Generation. (Evan Oswald, 95, is a resident of Glendale-based Glencroft Center for Modern Aging)

The importance of a husband

“Mom, I don’t want to get married”, said Ana to her mother. She continued, “Why is everyone interested in getting me married? Dad has been pestering me, Aunt Linda has broached the subject a dozen times. I am an independent woman and I do not need to be tied up with a man to spend the rest of my life. I am earning well, I am single and I am happy!” Her mother tried to pacify her and said, “Darling, you are my most beautiful creation. You are young, ambitious and I am sure you will achieve a lot in your life. But even you will make mistakes in life like everyone else does. On such occasions, will you not need someone to blame? So please understand the importance of a husband.” TAKE CARE OF YOUR LOVED ONES. WILLS and Trusts. Day R. Williams, Attorney at Law, 1601 Fairview Drive, Suite C, Carson City, NV. Call Day today! a little turtle began to climb a tree. After hours of effort he reached the top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the ground. The turtle tried again and again while a couple of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. Hurting people, hurt people

We have all experienced it: pain. We know pain like the dull edge of a knife: it is around us every day. We are almost always suffering with some sort of pain, whether it is prevalent or not. When we feel pain, we have a desperate urge to unload it, to get rid of it somewhere else. Now, think of a time where you had been suffering. Think about the relief you felt lashing out on somebody, simply because you were suffering, and especially if they were the cause of your suffering. Why do we feel justified when we place our hurt on other people? Because hurting people, hurt people. We act thoughtlessly at times. We lash out, we say things we don’t mean, and we take the people we love down in our wake. Most of the time, we don’t mean what we say, but we say it anyways because of the relief that we experience when we say it. We don’t want to hurt each other, but we simply do not know how to let go of our own hurt without projecting it onto others. We are all on a journey, each one of us very different from our peers. Therefore, we will not always be able to understand somebody else’s journey. However, even if we do not understand, we can still empathize. That means, when we can recognize that when people lash out at us, it is because they are hurting, not because of the type of person that they are. Take a moment to reflect, and ask somebody; “I can see you are hurting, how can I help you?”. If we all can exhibit kindness when we are faced with adversity, we will see a difference in how others respond. So, the next time that somebody hurts you, don’t assume it is because of the kind of person they are. Look at the situation from a different point of view, and see that perhaps the person who has

been hurting you is only doing so because they have been hurt before. When there are people you just cannot get along with, and they seem to be impossible to reach out to, remember that hurting people hurt people, and by taking ownership, and expressing kindness and love, we can stop the cycle. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Things to Ponder

What is Predictive Programming?

Predictive Programming is a theory that the government or other higher-ups are using fictional movies or books as a mass mind control tool to make the population more accepting of planned future events. This was first described and proposed by researcher Alan Watt who defines Predictive programming as “Predictive programming is a subtle form of psychological conditioning provided by the media to acquaint the public with planned societal changes to be implemented by our leaders. If and when these changes are put through, the public will already be familiarized with them and will accept them as natural progressions, thus lessening possible public resistance and commotion. People who believe in this theory are mostly conspiracy theorists who believe there will be a totalitarian government takeover, or on the more mild side, theorists who believe tragic events are an inside job or completely fake. More information can be found on blog posts, etc and many conspiracy theorists have either made videos on it or have spoken on the subject. When one door closes and another door opens, you are probably in prison. To me, “drink responsibly” means don’t spill it. Age 60 might be the new 40, but 9:00 pm is the new midnight. It’s the start of a brand new day, and I’m off like a herd of turtles. The older I get, the earlier it gets late. When I say, “The other day,” I could be referring to any time between yesterday and 15 years ago. I remember being able to get up without making sound effects. I had my patience tested. I’m negative. Remember, if you lose a sock in the dryer, it comes back as a Tupperware lid that doesn’t fit any of your containers. If you’re sitting in public and a stranger takes the seat next to you, just stare straight ahead and say, “Did you bring the money?” When you ask me what I am doing today, and I say “nothing,” it does not mean I am free. It means I am doing nothing. I finally got eight hours of sleep. It took me three days, but whatever. I run like the winded. I hate when a couple argues in public, and I missed the beginning and don’t know whose side I’m on. When someone asks what I did over the weekend, I squint and ask, “Why, what did you hear?” When you do squats, are your knees supposed to sound like a goat chewing on aluminum can stuffed with celery? I don’t mean to interrupt people. I just randomly remember things and get really excited. When I ask for directions, please don’t use words like “east.” Sometimes, someone unexpected comes into your life out of nowhere, makes your heart race, and changes you forever. We call those people “The police” My luck is like a bald guy who just won a comb. Don’t bother walking a mile in my shoes. That would be boring. Spend 30 seconds in my head. That’ll freak you right out. CUJO’S HOG HOUSE HAS RELOCATED! Split second vs. nanosecond

I have discovered the answer to a question that has been puzzling scientists for hundreds of years. What is the exact difference between a split second and a nanosecond? My wife and I were getting ready to go to a movie when, right as we were about to leave home, my wife asked me the question all guys dread. She asked, “Does this make my butt look big?” If I had said “no” in a nanosecond, we’d have been out the door. Since I took a split second, she had to go to the mall and buy new outfits with jewelry, shoes, and purses to match. Long-Haired Drivers

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we’ll talk about it.” After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father’s study where his father said, “Son, I’ve been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve studied your Bible diligently, but you didn’t get your hair cut!” The young man waited a moment and replied, “You know Dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair....” To which his father replied, “Yes, and they WALKED every where they went. JR POWER SPORTS! I was looking through some old photo albums the other day. I had already looked through them many times before but I felt a sudden urge to see those old pictures again. I found myself reliving so many beautiful memories from my childhood. There was my dear Nana giving me a bath when I was a baby. There was me and my brother standing in front of the world’s ugliest Christmas tree. There was my first dog: Duke snuggled up next to me on the couch. There was my beautiful Mom holding me on her lap. Then all of a sudden the pictures seemed blurry. I realized that the pictures were blurry because my eyes were moist. Tears were dripping down my cheeks. I wiped my wet eyes and wondered what was going on. I hadn’t cried the last time I looked at those pictures. What was different now? I soon saw that it was I who was different. Since I had last looked through those photos I had grown. My empathy had risen. My compassion had strengthened. My spirit had walked a little further down the path of love. I realized too that wet eyes were nothing to be ashamed of as long as they came with a warm heart. I smiled and closed the photo album up once again. I felt Mom and Nana smiling down on me from Heaven. I felt my Heavenly Father’s love inside of me and all around me. Leo Buscaglia once said: “I’m not afraid to cry. It cleans out my eyeballs.” I think it cleans out our insides as well. It helps us to wash away our pain, fear, and grief. It helps us to reconnect to our love, goodness, and oneness with God. It helps us to become who we were meant to be. The next time you feel your own tears starting then just let them flow. Life is full of smiles. Life is full of tears. Only by allowing them both can we truly live. Only by embracing them both can we truly love. (J. Fried Eggs

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. ‘Careful,’ he said, ‘CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the Salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!’ The wife stared at him. ‘What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?’ The husband calmly replied, ‘I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.’

Chrysalis or Cocoon?

A chrysalis is not a cocoon. Do you know the difference between the two? Both butterfly and moth larvae are called caterpillars and both form pupae. Both butterflies and moths go through complete metamorphosis. However, only the butterfly pupa is a chrysalis. The butterfly larva (caterpillar) transforms into a chrysalis during metamorphosis. In contrast, the moth caterpillar spins a cocoon around itself before it becomes a pupa. The cocoon is an external structure that the moth caterpillar builds around itself to eventually protect the living moth pupa inside. A cocoon is a simple silk casing, while a chrysalis is a living thing! CUSTOM CANVAS WORK! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Do you suffer Grandparent Alienation?

An old man, a boy and a donkey

An old man, a boy, and a donkey were travelling. The boy rode the donkey while the man walked. In the first town they went to, the people all said; “How hard for that old man who has to walk!” The two travelers heard this and decided that the boy should walk and the old man should ride. In the next town, people whispered, “What a shame, he makes the little boy walk!” So the pair decided that they should both ride. In the third town, people all muttered about how cruel it was to make the donkey work so hard. So the boy and the old man decided to carry the donkey. On the way to the next town, they had to go across a bridge. As they walked across it, they slipped and the donkey fell in to the river and drowned. The moral of the story is - If you try to please everyone, you will eventually end up losing your ass. A new form of family estrangement is becoming an epidemic, and many people are unaware of its existence. Grandparent Alienation a.k.a. Grandparent Alienation Syndrome (GAS) is rearing its ugly head too often, cutting off grandparents from their treasured grandchildren. A simple disagreement, misunderstanding, or envy of the grandchild’s love for the grandparent, can set off a complete withdrawal of any time allowed between the grandchild and grandparent. One cause of GAS can be due to divorce or separation where one custodial parent restricts contact with the ex-spouse and can even turn the child against their other parent by telling lies and speaking negatively of the other parent (Parent Alienation Syndrome PAS). This in turn can cutoff the grandparents. Another cause may be due to a conflict or disagreement between the daughter/daughter-in-law/ or son/son- in-law with their parents/in-laws resulting in the alienation of the grandparents from the grandchildren. A mere child rearing disagreement, a personal vendetta, a misunderstanding, or merely a personality conflict can result in alienation from the grandparents. We remember raising our children with love and kindness and sensibility only to have our son or daughter take the side of their spouse in the decision to cut contact. We start to second guess ourselves about the way we raised our children, looking back and reviewing everything we can remember that would justify such behavior when they became adults. We liken the alienation to a nightmare where our adult children turn against us at the flip of a switch. Then, if we are allowed a visit with the grandchildren, we tip toe around discussions or conversation as we worry we might say the wrong thing and get cut off again. Our grandchildren are distraught and confused, having spent much time with the grandparent or even having been raised by the grandparent which created a loving bond between the two. The grandchildren are devastated as are the grandparents from this traumatic separation. Children who suffer this alienation have no context of cohesiveness or normalcy in extended family life. They do not learn or know normalcy and they suffer profound emotional consequences. GAS is considered by experts to be a severe form of child abuse, and elder abuse. Abuse is never acceptable; abuse is never OK. You will come to realize that if you did not cause this, then you cannot fix this campaign of denigration. Healthy minds want to fix things, unhealthy minds do not. For more information and support visit aga-fl.org, grandmagazine.com, grammawarrior.com . Deer Camp

The guys were all at a deer camp. No one wanted to room with Bob, because he snored so badly. They decided it wasn’t fair to make one of them stay with Bob the whole time, so they voted to take turns sharing the room with Bob. The first guy to sleep in the same room with Bob came to breakfast the next morning with his hair in a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. The other guys said, “Man, what happened to you? Their exhausted co-camper said, “Bob snored so loudly, I gave up trying to sleep and just sat up and watched him all night.” The next night it was a different guy’s turn. In the morning, the same thing happened. The man came to the breakfast table with his hair standing up, and eyes completely bloodshot. Again his friends asked, “Man, what happened to you? You look awful! He replied: ‘Man, that Bob shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night.” The third night was Fred’s turn. Fred was a tanned, older cowboy, a man’s man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. “Good morning!” he said. His friends couldn’t believe it. Flabbergasted they asked, “What happened?” He said, “Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Bob into bed, patted him on the butt, and kissed him good night. Bob sat up and watched ME all night.” POT BELLY WOOD STOVE 34½” TALL, 6” PIPE, 22½” wide, door 6” tall, 6½” wide, great for shop or hunting cabin, comes with some pipe $400 OBO, Bruce (775)309-7580

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Things mentally strong people don’t do

This is something a mom wrote to her daughter, They don’t waste time feeling sorry for themselves, they don’t give away their power. They don’t allow others to control them, and they don’t give someone else power over them. They don’t say things like, “My boss makes me feel bad,” because they understand that they are in control over their own emotions and they have a choice in how they respond. They don’t shy away from change. They don’t waste energy on things they can’t control. You won’t hear a mentally strong person complaining over lost luggage or traffic jams. Instead, they focus on what they can control in their lives. They recognize that sometimes, the only thing they can control is their attitude. They don’t worry about pleasing everyone. Mentally strong people recognize that they don’t need to please everyone all the time. They’re not afraid to say no or speak up when necessary. They strive to be kind and fair, but can handle other people being upset if they didn’t make them happy. They don’t dwell on the past. Mentally strong people don’t waste time dwelling on the past and wishing things could be different. They acknowledge their past and can say what they’ve learned from it. However, they don’t constantly relive bad experiences or fantasize about the glory days. Instead, they live for the present and plan for the future. They don’t make the same mistakes over and over. Mentally strong people accept responsibility for their behavior and learn from their past mistakes. As a result, they don’t keep repeating those mistakes over and over. Instead, they move on and make better decisions in the future. Stringer full of fish

A farmer in the country noticed that a gentleman would fish at the lake (close to the farmer’s house) and would always leave with a stringer full of fish. The fellow had a boat but a fishing pole was not to be seen. The farmer mentioned the situation to the game warden. The warden then started watching this man and all that the farmer said was true! The man would arrive at the lake in the morning and by early afternoon, he had a stringer full of fish. The warden dressed like a fisherman one day and approached the man. They exchanged pleasantries and the stranger asked the warden in disguise to come fish with him. They boated for 45 minutes and arrived at a secluded spot. The stranger then pulled out a stick of dynamite. The warden

said, “I’m going to have to place you under arrest--I am a game warden and you are fishing illegally!” The stranger calmly lit the stick of dynamite and handed it to the warden. The stranger then said, “Are you gonna talk or fish?” MIGUEL’S GARDEN SERVICE, FULL LAWN MAINTENANCE, clean up, fertilizing, dead shrubs and trees pulled out, excellent references, great rates, serving Carson Valley 27+ years! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Parking Ticket

My wife and I went into town and visited a shop. When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. We went up to him and I said, “come on man, how about giving a senior citizen a break?” He ignored us and continued writing the ticket. I called him an “imbecile.” He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn-out tires. So my wife called him a “butthead”. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing more tickets. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote. He finally finished, sneered at us and walked away. Just then our bus arrived, and we got on it and went home. We always look for cars with political bumper stickers we don’t support. Just a big mess

After his marriage broke up, my manager became very philosophical. “I guess it was in our genes,” he sighed. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Her sign is the one for earth. Mine is the one for water. Never, never say

A store manager overheard a clerk saying to a customer, “No, ma’am, we haven’t had any for some weeks now, and it doesn’t look as if we’ll be getting any soon.” Alarmed, the manager rushed over to the customer who was walking out the door and said, “That isn’t true, ma’am. Of course, we’ll have some soon. In fact, we placed an order for it a couple of weeks ago.” The manager then drew the clerk aside and growled, “Never, never, never, never say we don’t have something. If we don’t have it, say we ordered it and it’s on its way. “Now, what was it she wanted?” The clerk answered, “Snow.” D R LANDSCAPING, DEFENSIBLE SPACE, TREE work and yard cleanups, sprinkler repairs and weed abatement, house and garage clean ups, Dave (775)671-0808 GET FAST INTERNET! Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.” BRAND NEW QUANTUM EDGE 2.0 POWER wheel chair, many features $1,500 OBO (775)790-0885 MINOR TO MAJOR AUTOMOTIVE REPAIRS, Tires and More! 4 Stages of Alcoholism

In 1960, biostatistician and alcohol abuse researcher Elvin Morton Jellinek (E. M. Jellinek) gained widespread attention when he published The Disease Concept of Alcoholism, offering a new way to look at alcohol addiction. Jellinek viewed alcoholism as a chronic relapsing condition that needed to be treated by health professionals and developed a theory on the progression of alcoholism through various stages. His model, now widely accepted, detailed his theoretical stages of alcohol addiction, each characterized by different changes in mental, physical, and social functioning. Although not every person struggling with alcohol abuse goes through these stages, they can be a helpful checklist to assess alcohol consumption and prevent forthcoming problems. Based on Jellinek’s theory, the four stages of alcohol addiction are: Pre-Alcoholic - The first involves general experimentation with alcohol and is when alcohol tolerance develops as the person begins drinking more regularly as a coping mechanism for anxiety, stress, or other emotions. Early Stage - Jellinek considers this the transitional stage where the development of a cyclical pattern of alcohol abuse starts. Drinking becomes more regular and individuals begin using social gatherings as an excuse to drink. They may also start consuming alcohol to cope with the negative consequences caused by drinking such as hangovers. At this stage, blackouts may also occur. Middle Stage - This is the most crucial stage in Jellinek’s theory, and when a person begins to drink frequently and consistently, maybe even starting off their morning with a drink. They may struggle with worsening relationships with friends and family or experience changes to their behavior that impacts them negatively. They often feel health impacts such as hangovers or feeling sick more often when not drinking. Late Stage - This final phase leads to a complete loss of control over alcohol consumption—the individual must drink. At this point, the individual’s body begins to require the presence of alcohol to feel normal. When the individual does not consume alcohol regularly, they may experience withdrawal symptoms and intense cravings. Withdrawing from alcohol can be difficult, painful, and dangerous to go through on your own without help and support. Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal can sometimes be severe

22

enough they become serious and life-threatening. People who have been drinking heavily for an extended period of time may suffer a severe form of alcohol withdrawal called delirium tremens. This serious, life-threatening condition involves sudden and severe changes to your brain and central nervous system and is considered a medical emergency. Managing College Students

One night four freshmen students were out drinking late at night, and they didn’t study for the test scheduled for the next day. When they got up, they began planning a story to get out of taking the test. They pulled a Bill Cosby trick, reaching under the edges of their cars, and around the engines, purposefully getting dirt, grease, and oil on their hands, arms, and clothes. Now properly prepared and offering the appearance to match their fantastic story, they entered the class. They explained to the professor that they went to a wedding last night, but when coming home, they had a blowout. The tire was ripped to shreds, and having no spare, they had to push and muscle the car all the way home. As this took most of the night, they were dirty and exhausted, and would be unable to take the test today. The professor was an understanding sort of fellow. After listening carefully to their heartfelt, convincing story, he said he would grant them additional study time, and would allow them to take the test 3 days later. On the 3rd day the students came to the classroom to take the test. The professor explained to them, that since this was late, and he had granted them special permission, there would be one special requirement to complete the test. They would each take the test in a separate room. Knowing he had already allowed them the opportunity to take the test late, and they were now well prepared for the test, they agreed. The professor led each student to their own individual room one at a time. He assured them that if they could pass the test, their GPAs would remain in good standings. Each student entered their room smiling and confident. This would be easy. Then

they opened the test booklet, discovering it to be a much shorter test than they expected. It only had 2 simple questions: Question Number 1: Write down your name. ( 2 points ) Question Number 2: Which tire on the car blew out? ( 98 points ) THOMAS J. BARTELS, HOROLOGIST, CLOCKS old and new repaired and restored. By mid-1886, Lindsey had his eye on other opportunities. He sold his Reno marble business, and began acquiring stone quarries. He located a thick vein of marble on the old Rickey Ranch in Mono County, which became his celebrated Antelope Valley quarry, known for its beautiful sky-blue marble. The ledge was over 100 feet wide and over 10,000 feet long, containing marble in at least 14 different colors. “This is no doubt the finest marble quarry in the United States,” the Reno newspaper concluded. Lindsey kept expanding, purchasing new machinery for his quarry and marble-cutting operation. And he kept his eye out for additional quarry sites. In 1889, he located a 40-acre marble quarry five miles east of Carson City. He also acquired a 65acre quarry near Mina, Nevada that produced “black Egyptian marble” said to be “laced with gold and variegated with green and copper-colored veins.” His quarrying equipment must have been massive; a single 45-ton block taken from his Mina quarry was shipped back east. Lindsey continued his monument work, doing at least some of it on the road. In 1890, he was “working out of the carriage department at R. Gelatt’s barn,” finishing several monuments destined for Genoa Cemetery. But did Lindsey really carve all the headstones himself? Probably not. Trade magazines of the era show that pre-carved stones could be ordered and shipped cross-country via rail. (Who knew, right?!) But if he didn’t make them all himself, Lindsey probably added finishing touches, including names and dates of the deceased. By 1893, Lindsey had located another new quarry: this time a travertine lode near Bridgeport. He won a gold medal for an exhibit of his sky-blue “Walker River” marble at the Chicago World’s Fair. And in 1894, he also took home a gold medal from the San Francisco Midwinter Exposition for a huge block of his magnificent travertine – measuring more than 4 by 7 feet, and two feet thick. But as the turn-of-the-century dawned, Lindsey was getting tired. He sold his Antelope Valley quarry in 1901 for the princely sum of $8,000 (nearly a quarter of a million dollars today), and moved with his wife to Fruitvale, California. And in early 1909, Lindsey finally sold his 65-acre “black Egyptian marble” works near Mina to Davis Brothers of Yerington. It was one of his last acts in life. William E. Lindsey passed away in Oakland on June 15, 1909 at the age of 66. He was laid to rest at Oakland’s Evergreen Cemetery, and when his wife passed away two years later, she was buried there beside him. Unlike the elaborate stone monuments he’d installed for his many clients, Lindsey’s grave marker is incredibly modest: a small, simple cube. We don’t know for sure, but it’s just possible he carved this final one for himself. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Life as Mama knew it

Getting older

Three older ladies were discussing the travails of getting older. One said, “Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand in front of the refrigerator and can’t remember whether I need to put it away, or start making a sandwich.” The second lady chimed in, “Yes, sometimes I find myself on the landing of the stairs and can’t remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down.” The third one responded, “Well, I’m glad I don’t have that problem; knock on wood,” as she rapped her knuckles on the table, then told them “That must be the door, I’ll get it!”

My children often asked me If I saw Abe Lincoln shot. If I rode in horse and buggy, And I’d say “that old I’m not!” So I took them to the places Where I used to run and play, And I told them many stories Of how things were in my day. The many homes we lived in With the outhouse right behind. Sleeping three in one full bed For our winters were unkind. The old pot bellied stove Where ten children gathered close, To warm their little bodies Before dressing in their clothes. Most all clothes were from relief Or hand me downs from others. Our shoes were lined with cardboard, As were our dad’s and mother’s. No butter on the toast we had... Lard, with sugar on the top. Canmilk coffee was for breakfast. Always two to one full cup. Hauling wood in winter snow With a wheelbarrow twice our size. Getting chased by neighbors horses Trudging homeward with our prize. There was a truck eleven And another seventeen. We grouped them both together And called them leventeen. When we’d hear that number called We’d know that we’d been found, Taking wood from off the pile Instead of off the ground. Old Joe’s pigs would free themselves. They were big and fast and mean. Thank heaven we were faster And the pigs a bit more lean. No screens upon the windows. No garbage pick up then, and The flies outdid the locusts In the plague sent down from heaven. Before we had our mealtime We were all called from play. To swing our towels above our heads And chase those flies away. Then we’d all sit down to supper To a platter piled up high With sliced fried green tomatoes, Which we’d eat until we’d sigh. Dangerous fun we all would have Taking jumps on cardboard sleds. Made for some skinned up faces When we jumped into our beds. Curling up into a tire, Rolling down a great steep hill. Jumping railings with a five foot drop, Made our mom and dad feel ill. On Saturday our mom would tie A diaper on her head. Then fire up the old wood range To bake our daily bread. With the kitchen warm and cozy She would fill the old wash tub, Then the youngest to the oldest Would get there weekly scrub. Picking beans from Barne’s garden Just a penny for a pound, Caused aching backs and dirty knees From kneeling on the ground. Picking berries in the summer Was another job of ours, We’d set out in the morning And pick for many hours. We’d stop at noon to eat Wherever there was shade... A peanut butter sandwich and Warm iced tea mom made. We would stomp cans in the center To wear upon our feet, To go clanking down the sidewalk Or any pavement street. Third powder was our swimming hole With a mine shaft in the middle. A dangerous place to swim, Especially when your little. We’d save paper, iron and rags To help out during the war. Victory gardens were aplenty To help out even more. The paper, iron and rags were Put upon the scale to weigh. So many pounds of each Would let us see a matinee. We’d laugh when mom was asked If she had rags to spare? She’d answer, if I give you mine I won’t have clothes to wear. I remember one fine day When we all went to the fair.. They stopped to get some ice cream, And they found I wasn’t there.

They found me sitting on a bench I was very little then. I said, “I knew you’d come and get me,” But in my heart I didn’t know when. Another time they moved While I was staying somewhere. Was I surprised when I got home, And found they were not there. We used to laugh and say, “They would count as we came in, Seven, eight, nine and ten. They all made it home again.” Those were the good old days, As I look back now with pride. They made us strong and hardy, But it’s a wonder we survived! New cell phone

A young man wanted to get his beautiful but quite naive wife something nice for their first wedding anniversary. So he decides to buy her a cell phone. She is all excited, she loves her phone. He shows her and explains to her all the features on the phone. The next day the blonde goes shopping. Her phone rings and it’s her husband, “Hi hun,” he says “how do you like your new phone?” She replies “I just love, it’s so small and your voice is clear as a bell but there’s one thing I don’t understand though.” “What’s that, baby?” asks the husband. “How did you know I was at Wal-Mart?”

Signs you have a hangover

You’re convinced that chirping birds are Satan’s pets. Trying to gain control of the situation, you continue to tell your room to stay still. Looking at yourself in the mirror induces the same reaction as chugging a glass of fresh paint. You’d rather have a pencil jammed up your nose than be exposed to sunlight. You set aside an entire morning to spend some quality time with your toilet. You replace the traditional praying on your knees with the more feasible praying in a fetal position. The bathroom reminds you of a carnival barker shouting, Step right up and give it a whirl! All day long your motto is, Never again. You could purchase a new bike just by recycling the bottles around your bed. Your natural response to Good morning, is Shut up! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Healing Prayer

Father God, we come to you because the people of this nation and everything in it belong to you. We are not here by accident. You are the one who set us in this nation at this particular time for the glory of your name. But Father, people in this country are turning against each other. We no longer live like brothers and sisters. Brother has turned against brother and child against parent. But your word says that if we humble ourselves and turn from our wicked ways you will heal our land. Lord, heal our hearts, heal our land. Remove bitterness and resentment from our hearts and help us to live as brothers and sisters. In Jesus’ name, Amen. GENEALOGY - THOROUGH RESEARCH OF FAMILY histories. At the altar

A couple were married for 30 years, and on Valentine’s Day, they were sitting at the breakfast table. He was buried behind his newspaper, and except for the occasional: “unbelievable” he muttered there was no conversation between the couple. So she finally asked him straight out: “do you still love me?” He finally puts down the newspaper and responds in a matter-offactly tone: “honey, 30 years ago at that altar I said that I did and if anything changes, you’ll be the first to know.” KENNY AND COLLEEN’S STUMP GRINDING services, K&C stump grinding services, Call (917)362-3181 or (410)739-4052 HARLEY DAVIDSON ENGINE REBUILDING, 30+ years experience, quick turn-around!
