Hmmmm?
I went to a book store and asked the saleswoman, ‘where’s the self-help section?’ She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose. Can an Atheist get insurance against acts of God? If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes? Would a fly without wings be called a walk? Where do forest rangers go to ‘get away from it all?’ If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his wages? Why are hemorrhoids called hemorrhoids instead of asteroids? One nice thing about egotists: they don’t talk about other people. If a turtle doesn’t have a shell, are they homeless or naked? Can vegetarians eat animal crackers? How is it possible to have a civil war? If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest drown too? Whose cruel idea was it for the word lisp to have ‘s’ in it? Why is it called tourist season if we can’t shoot at them? Why is there an expiration date on sour cream? TAKE CARE OF YOUR LOVED ONES. WILLS and Trusts. Day R. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” How do cashew nuts grow?
Elderly Man Thinks Fast
An elderly farmer in Florida had a large pond down by his fruit orchard. One evening he decided to go down to the pond and took a five-gallon bucket to pick some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard female voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in the pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, ‘We’re not coming out until you leave!’ The old man thought for a second and said, ‘I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim or to make you get out of the pond naked.’ Holding the bucket up he said, ‘I’m here to feed the alligator!’ Moral: Old men can still think fast. Cashew nuts grow out of a “strange apple”. Never seen it? It’s amazing! You have eaten these nuts hundreds of times but never thought about how they actually “come” to our world. The cashew apple is rich in nutrients and contains five times more vitamin C than an orange. It is eaten fresh, cooked in curries, or fermented into vinegar as well as an alcoholic drink. In parts of South America, natives regard the cashew apple as the delicacy, rather than the nut kernel popular elsewhere. Cashew apple is also used to make preserves, chutneys and jams in some countries such as India and Brazil. Cashew apples are not popular, in part because of highly astringent taste. This has been traced to the waxy layer on the skin that causes tongue and throat irritation after eating the cashew apple. In cultures that consume cashew apple, this astringent property of the cashew apple is typically removed by steaming the fruit for five minutes before washing it in cold water; alternatively boiling the fruit in salt water for five minutes or soaking it in gelatin solution reduces the concentration to palatable and acceptable levels. The true fruit of the cashew tree is a kidney or boxingglove shaped drupe that grows at the end of the cashew apple. The drupe develops first on the tree, and then the pedicel expands to become the cashew apple. Within the true fruit is a single seed, the cashew nut. The seed is surrounded by a double shell containing an allergenic phenolic resin, anacardic acid, a potent skin irritant chemically related to the better-known allergenic oil urushiol which is also a toxin found in the related poison ivy. Properly roasting cashews destroys the toxin, but it must be done outdoors as the smoke contains urushiol droplets which can cause severe, sometimes life-threatening, reactions by irritating the lungs. Some people are allergic to cashew nuts, but cashews are a less frequent allergen than nuts or peanuts. A BAD TILE JOB CAN BE LIKE A BAD HAIRCUT, but it doesn’t grow back, so don’t get hacked! Carson City’s “Palace”
By Karen Dustman Woodfords, CA
There was a certain “ambivalence” toward prostitution in Carson City’s early days, observes historian Peter Mires. Everyone knew it was happening, but — talk about it? That was a no-no! As a result, some fascinating history didn’t quite make it into the record books. The practice of the world’s oldest profession in Carson City was hardly a secret in town. An 1875 ordinance even helpfully set aside a three-block stretch along today’s Curry Street (between Second and Fifth Streets) for “bawdy houses” or “Houses of Ill Fame” — which evidently were already thriving there. (The thriving went on for decades . . . several brothels, notes Mires, continued to operate a mere two blocks from the Capitol building until finally closed at last in 1942 by “federal order.”) Carson City wasn’t alone, of course. When census takers made door-to-door visits through Nevada in June, 1870, one house was found to include 17 women, all tactfully identified by the census-taker as employed “keeping house.” (This particular home included a single male occupant who, as historian Raymond Smith charmingly expressed it, “must have been happy, indeed.”) Other census-takers were less discreet in their descriptions, however. Some forthrightly noted the presence of Chinese prostitutes and “hurdy” houses. When those census notes were shipped off to Washington, a delicate dilemma was raised: exactly which category of employment should be used to account for these not-so-domestic women? According to Smith, the question was gently finessed: “prostitutes, courtesans, harlots, etc.” were simply lumped into the job classification for ‘cotton and woolen mill operatives.’ Problem solved. A different euphemism came to the rescue when maps of the streets in Carson City’s red light district were prepared for the Sanborn Fire Insurance Company in 1885. During the mapping, some brothels were conveniently disguised by the vague but accurate legend: “Dw’g” (dwelling). At least one larger structure of the day, however, bears a mysterious label on the Sanborn map: “Palace.” Located at the southwest corner of West Fourth and Curry Streets (then Ormsby), this building was owned in 1885 by Mary Ann Phillips, who had purchased it in 1874. According to Mires, the term Palace “can only mean one thing — a high-end brothel.” And a palace of sorts it must have been, indeed, to warrant such a distinction! And a fine bit of lore to keep in mind the next time historians sit down to study a Sanborn map. (Many thanks to historian Peter Mires for the background for this story!) “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Write your Congressman! Minden needs a new Post Office!
Cowboy’s Canine
If you would like to contact Congressman Amodei regarding a new post office for Minden you can contact him at amodei.house.gov or mail him at 5310 Kietzke Lane, Suite 103, Reno, NV 89511 Mr. Mark Amodei, as a growing community, we need your help in providing a larger and more user-friendly post office for Minden, Nevada residents. Around 2005 or so, USPS had supposedly approved for a larger/better facility for Minden. 2018, we are still waiting! 2005 or so, fewer people were shopping online. 2018 a dramatic increase in online shopping which has produced an extremely large volume of parcels, which is not going away. Our Minden post office needs more space to house these parcels, as well as more work space for the employees/contractors and their vehicles. Safety is also an issue due to the crowded quarters for postal workers. The parking lot for community members is an accident waiting to happen, if it hasn’t already. Our community is in dire need and are deserving of a larger facility as are the Minden postal employees/contractors. Our population will continue to grow, as will online shopping/parcel/mail deliveries. If we need to get a petition signed by X amount of community members please let me know. We would hope to have a new facility location in the new year 2019. Lisa Coffron, Minden Resident

The majority of cobwebs are actually formed from abandoned spider webs. These home-abandoning spiders, mainly those of the species Theridiidae, build these sticky webs for catching prey. These pesky webs form in the corners of our rooms, along the edges of ceilings and on the sides of our walls. You can get rid of them easily, but without fail, they seem to come back in no time! The common assumption is that these cobwebs form randomly due to dust particles adhering to each other (maybe they’re just lonely). However, cobwebs don’t spontaneously form… the real secret behind cobwebs is actually far more creepy. Cobwebs are made by Spiders! As it turns out, the majority of cobwebs are actually formed from abandoned spider webs! That’s right, these home-abandoning spiders, mainly those of the species Theridiidae, build these sticky webs for catching prey (spiders also use their silk to make cocoons for their eggs). Over time, however, dust accumulates on the web, and the spider has to abandon it and build a new one. That’s the reason why you never see a spider on a cobweb, even though the eight-legged arachnid is responsible for its creation! Okay, so now we know that the haphazard cobwebs were once active spider webs, but what about those single strands of dusty material that are seen hanging from the ceiling? Are spiders responsible for those too? In fact, they are. Spiders, as well as a few other tiny arthropods, have the ability to produce silk strands for travel and protection. Spiders specifically use this strand of silk as a safety line when they jump or swing from place to place. It’s a bit like Spider-Man, if you think about it. Or rather, Spider-Man behaves like spiders. Quiet
A father and son went hunting together for the first time. The father said “Stay here and be very quiet. I’ll be across the field.” A little while later the father heard a blood curdling scream and ran back to his son asking, “What’s wrong? I told you to be quiet.” The son answered, “Look, I was quiet when the snake slithered across my feet. I was quiet when the bear breathed down my neck. An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business to live a more leisurely life with his wife and enjoy his extended family. He would miss the paycheck each week, but he wanted to retire. They could get by. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go & asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but over time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career. When the carpenter finished his work, his employer came to inspect the house. Then he handed the front-door key to the carpenter and said, “This is your house… my gift to you.” The carpenter was shocked! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then, with a shock, we realize we have to live in the house we have built. If we could do it over, we would do it much differently. But, you cannot go back. You are the carpenter, and every day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Someone once said, “Life is a do-it-yourself project.” Your attitude, and the choices you make today, help build the “house” you will live in tomorrow. Therefore, build wisely! Workers are ‘Ghosting’ Employers Without Even Saying Goodbye
A notorious millennial dating practice is starting to creep into the workplace: ghosting. According to The Washington Post, employers are increasingly noticing that workers are leaving their jobs by simply not showing up and cutting off contact with their companies. A number of contacts said that they had been ‘ghosted,’ a situation in which a worker stops coming to work without notice and then is impossible to contact,” the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago said in a report cited by The Post. According to The Post, experts are blaming the uptick in workplace ghosting on the US labor market. Unemployment is at its lowest point in decades, and there are more job openings than there are people looking for jobs, emboldening workers to skip the awkward conversations with their bosses and move on to other opportunities. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” 5 Stages of Being Drunk
Baseball Boy...
A little boy walked up to home plate in an empty baseball field, with his bat and ball in hand. As he threw the ball up in the air, he proclaimed, “I am the best ball player ever!” He swung with all his might, but missed. He did the same thing and missed again. He picked up the ball, tossed it up one more time, said “I am the best ball player in the world!” Then he swung and missed again. “Wow!” he said. “What a great pitcher!” JAMES A. Stage 1 - SMART - This is when you suddenly become an expert on every subject in the known Universe. You know everything and want to pass on your knowledge to anyone who will listen. At this stage you are always RIGHT. And of course, the person you are talking to is very WRONG. This makes for an interesting argument when both parties are SMART. Stage 2 - GOOD LOOKING - This is when you realize that you are the BEST LOOKING person in the entire bar and that people fancy you. You can go up to a perfect stranger knowing they fancy you and really want to talk to you. Bear in mind that you are still SMART, so you can talk to this person about any subject under the sun. Stage 3 - RICH - This is when you suddenly become the richest person in the world. You can buy drinks for the entire bar because you have an armored truck full of money parked behind the bar. You can also make bets at this stage, because of course, you are still SMART, so naturally you will win all of your bets. It doesn’t matter how much you bet ‘cos you are RICH. You will also buy drinks for everyone that you fancy, because now you are the BEST LOOKING person in the world. Stage 4 - BULLET PROOF - You are now ready to pick fights with anyone and everyone especially those with whom you have been betting or arguing. This is because nothing can hurt you. At this point you can also go up to the partners of the people who you fancy and challenge to a battle of wits or money. You have no fear of losing this battle because you are SMART, you are RICH and hell, you’re BETTER LOOKING than they are anyway! Stage 5 - INVISIBLE - This is the Final Stage of Drunkenness. At this point you can do anything because NO ONE CAN SEE YOU. You dance on a table to impress the people who you fancy because the rest of the people in the room cannot see you. You are also invisible to the person who wants to fight you. You can walk through the street singing at the top of your lungs because no one can see or hear you and because you’re still SMART you know all the words. Raising a family can be a lot of pressure in our Facebook, Instagram-happy, Pinterest-perfect culture. With so many friends and followers posting and, yes, bragging about their kids and lives, how does “oversharenting” affect us as parents? And more important: What is it doing to our kids? I was browsing my Facebook feed, enjoying pictures of my friends’ kids, dogs, and vacations. And that’s when I saw it: a close-up picture of a child’s portable potty. The pint-size throne was bright red, plastic, and - how to put this delicately? - filled with tangible results. “First time in the potty!” crowed the caption, written by the proud mother. The picture generated scores of thumbs up, and several comments - “Woot woot!” “Such a relief for Mom!” - celebrating this magical moment of which we were now all a part, whether we liked it or not. And magical it might be; potty training is no small feat, as I’m learning myself these days. Yet no one said what I was thinking, and what others surely were thinking, which was “Seriously? Did you really just post that?” Families used to be like Las Vegas - what happened at home, stayed at home. For better or worse, previous generations of parents, and especially mothers, were expected to stay mum about their lives and sum up their daily frustrations with a smile and an “Everything is fine!” We modern-day parents, however, live in a world of updates and uploads on the minutiae of child rearing for a cast of hundreds, sometimes thousands, which includes everyone from close friends to coworkers to people we’ve met just once or twice, or not at all. Not surprisingly, many parents think all this sharing has gotten a little out of hand. In an exclusive Parents survey of more than 2,000 respondents, 79 percent said other parents overshare on social media -- yet only 32 percent of us think we overshare ourselves. Hmm. Of course, what’s TMI in one parent’s eyes may not be to another’s. For example, 65 percent of parents think posting a picture of a kid in her underwear is not okay to post, which leaves room for plenty who think it’s NBD. What’s more, we’re only beginning to learn how this “oversharenting” might be affecting kids. This is the first generation to be born into the like-happy world of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. And it’s hard not to notice that children as young as 3 or 4 have become strangely adept at posing. There are those who have mastered a mini version of the so-called sorority squat: knees slightly bent, hands on top, smile perfectly frozen. And plenty more have perfected the sassy arm triangle: hand on hip, elbow jutted out. It’s little wonder: Kids pick up on what their parents like, and Like, from a tender age. Kids know, ‘When I do something my mom likes or finds funny, she puts it on Instagram or Facebook.

Of course there’s a difference between posting the occasional burst of pride that would make any parent smile - a kid’s first steps, a big catch in a game, a tender moment between siblings - and a daily barrage of updates. There are parents who seem suspiciously like they’re trying to boost their own image (“Volunteering at school again! I am THAT mom”), while others have a knack for building their children up while casually knocking other people’s kids down (“Jimmy made the varsity basketball team, NOT the JV team! Woot!”). While it’s still too early to tell the long-term repercussions of all this sharing, experts say, they agree it can’t be super-healthy for kids - not simply because of what parents are posting, but because of what a time suck all that posting and scrolling can be. “Social media is wonderful in so many ways: We can share with family and friends around the world in an instant,” says Catherine SteinerAdair, Ed.D., author of The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age. “Where it becomes worrisome is when parents are pulling away from family life, lost in their smartphones and screens, leaving kids feeling neglected and lonely.” (parents.com/Mackenzie Dawson)

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” I Know Him
A small-town prosecuting barrister called his first witness to the stand in a trial - an attractive middle aged lady. He approached her and asked, “Ms. Jones, do you know me?” She responded, “I do know you Mr. Leigh. I’ve known you since you were a young boy. And frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you’re a rising big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.” The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Williams, do you know the defense attorney?” She again replied, “Why, yes I do. I’ve known Mr. Knowles since he was a youngster, too. I used to baby-sit him for his parents. And he, too, has been a real disappointment to me. He’s lazy, bigoted, he has a drinking problem. The man can’t build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the shoddiest in the entire state. Yes, I know him.” At this point, the judge rapped the courtroom to silence and called both barristers to the bench. In a very quiet voice, he said with menace, “If either of you asks her if she knows me, you’ll be jailed for contempt!”
Who Do You Need?
In one small rural town the sheriff also fulfilled the role of the town’s animal vet. One night the phone rang, and his wife answered. An agitated voice inquired, “Is your husband there?” “Well, do you need him as the sheriff or the vet?” the wife asked. “Both!” was the reply. “We can’t get our dog’s mouth open, and there’s a burglar in it.” PAINTING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, STAINING, faux and fine finishes, free estimates, Powers Painting, NV#68615, powerspainting.org or (775)7815531 or (775)315-5179 TWO PIECE SECTIONAL SOFA; ROUND COFFEE TABLE with Gold Leaf Under glass, tables, Lamps, 7 Piece King Size Bedroom Set, Walnut with Burl Inlay, lots of oriental pieces, call for pricing (775)267-3867 MASTER HOROLOGIST, CLOCK REPAIR, MUSEUM Quality Furniture, Chair Caning and Antique Everything Restoration, Grandfather Clock House Calls! On January 1, 2019 power went out in the early morning for a few hours in the Minden/Gardnerville area. I woke at 4am, took a quick shower, headed out to find a hot cup of coffee. Majority of all street lights on Hwy. 395 and lights on businesses were out. The highway was pitch black except for my headlights and a few others on the highway. It was actually beautiful and nostalgically welcoming as I traveled through our towns getting the sense of how it used to be here in our rural communities. It got me wondering, “why do cities and businesses invest so much money to produce lighting at night and is this a form of pollution?” Light pollution is excessive, misdirected, or obtrusive artificial (usually outdoor) light. Too much light pollution has consequences: it washes out starlight in the night sky, interferes with astronomical research, disrupts ecosystems, has adverse health effects and wastes energy. A little more than 100 years ago, you could walk outside at night even in a city and and see the Milky Way galaxy arch across the night sky. Being able to see thousands of stars was part of everyday life, inspiring artists like Van Gogh or musical composers like Holst or writers like Shakespeare. By allowing artificial lights to wash out our starry night skies, we are losing touch with our cultural heritage (e.g., what has made us who we are). We are also losing touch with what could inspire future generations. With more than half of the world’s population now living in cities, 3 out of every 4 people in cities have never experienced the wonderment of pristinely dark skies. How do you explain the importance of what they’ve lost to light pollution? How can you make them aware that light pollution is a concern on many fronts: safety, energy conservation, cost, health and effects on wildlife, as well as our ability to view the stars? Finally, how do you convince them that it’s worthwhile to take even small steps, to help fix this problem? In disrupting ecosystems, light pollution poses a serious threat in particular to nocturnal wildlife, having negative impacts on plant and animal physiology. It can confuse the migratory patterns of animals, alter competitive interactions of animals, change predator-prey relations, and cause physiological harm. The rhythm of life is orchestrated by the natural diurnal patterns of light and dark; so disruption to these patterns impacts the ecological dynamics. With respect to adverse health effects, many species, especially humans, are dependent on natural body cycles called circadian rhythms and the production of melatonin, which are regulated by light and dark (e.g., day and night). If humans are exposed to light while sleeping, melatonin production can be suppressed. This can lead to sleep disorders and other health problems such as in-

creased headaches, worker fatigue, medically defined stress, some forms of obesity due to lack of sleep and increased anxiety. And ties are being found to a couple of types of cancer. There are also effects of glare on aging eyes. Health effects are not only due to over-illumination or excessive exposure of light over time, but also improper spectral composition of light (e.g., certain colors of light). Light pollution wastes money and energy. Billions of dollars are spent on unnecessary lighting every year in the United States alone, with an estimated $1.7 billion going directly into the nighttime sky via unshielded outdoor lights. Wasted lighting in the US releases 38 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually; unshielded outdoor lights are directly responsible for 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide waste. Simply reducing and removing unnecessary lighting saves money and energy, often at minimal expense. Over-lighting the night neither improves visibility nor increases nighttime safety, utility, security, or ambiance. November 20, 1923, the U.S. Patent Office grants Patent No. 1,475,074 to 46-year-old inventor and newspaperman Garrett Morgan for his three-position traffic signal. Though Morgan’s was not the first traffic signal (that one had been installed in London in 1868), it was an important innovation nonetheless: By having a third position besides just “Stop” and “Go,” it regulated crossing vehicles more safely than earlier signals had. Morgan, the child of two former slaves, was born in Kentucky in 1877. When he was just 14 years old, he moved north to Ohio to look for a job. First he worked as a handyman in Cincinnati; next he moved to Cleveland, where he worked as a sewing-machine repairman. In 1907, he opened his own repair shop, and in 1909 he added a garment shop to his operation. The business was an enormous success, and by 1920 Morgan had made enough money to start a newspaper, the Cleveland Call, which became one of the most important black newspapers in the nation. Morgan was prosperous enough to have a car at a time when the streets were crowded with all manner of vehicles: Bicycles, horse-drawn delivery wagons, streetcars and pedestrians all shared downtown Cleveland’s narrow streets and clogged its intersections. There were manually operated traffic signals where major streets crossed one another, but they were not all that effective: Because they switched back and forth between Stop and Go with no interval in between, drivers had no time to react when the command changed. This led to many collisions between vehicles that both had the right of way when they entered the intersection. As the story goes, when Morgan witnessed an especially spectacular accident at an ostensibly regulated corner, he had an idea: If he designed an automated signal with an interim “warning” position—the ancestor of today’s yellow light—drivers would have time to clear the intersection before crossing traffic entered it. The signal Morgan patented was a T-shaped pole with three settings. At night, when traffic was light, it could be set at half-mast (like a blinking yellow light today), warning drivers to proceed carefully through the intersection. He sold the rights to his invention to General Electric for $40,000. (history.com)

My sister-in-law, a truck driver, had decided to get a dog for protection since she drove all over the country. As she inspected a likely candidate, the trainer told her, “He doesn’t like men.” “Perfect,” my sister-in-law thought and took the dog. Then one day she was approached by two men in a parking lot, and she watched to see how her canine bodyguard would react. Soon it became clear that the trainer wasn’t kidding. As the men got closer, the dog ran under the nearest car.

Have you heard the phrase, “eat lots of sweet potatoes?” God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body! God’s Pharmacy is amazing! A sliced carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... And YES, medical science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes. A tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food. God’s Pharmacy again. Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the medical research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food, available without a trip to the regular pharmacy. A walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function Kidney beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys. God’s unity in creation is astounding. Celery, bok choy, rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% calcium and these foods are 23% calcium. If you don’t have enough calcium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body. Avocadoes, eggplant, and pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today’s research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them). Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility. Who would have thought God already had this covered in his pharmacy? Sweet potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics, good news for insulin dependent patients all over the world. Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries. God’s pharmacy! Oranges, grapefruits, and other citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands.... Continued

of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts. Onions look like the body’s cells. Skin Canoes....
Three men are found in the wilderness by civilized cannibals. The men are led to a gravesite next to the water. The chief says, ‘We will kill you as a coward, or we will let you die honorable deaths for your homelands. You choose the weapon. Either way, your skins will be used to make our canoes.’ The first man, a soldier at heart, asks for a handgun. With this, he recites the Pledge and shoots himself. He is carried off. The next man asks for a sword. A warrior at heart, he uses a Japanese katana to commit seppuku as a Japanese man. The last man asks for a fork. ‘A fork? asks the chief?’ But it’s his dying wish, so they hand him the fork. Love and Marriage
While getting married, most of the guys say to girl’s parents, “I will keep your daughter happy for the rest of her life.” Have you ever heard a girl saying something like this to the boy’s parents?????? Like “I will keep your son happy for the rest of his life” Nooo.... because women don’t tell lies. A small argument between a couple turns violent. Husband says: “Don’t let the animal in me come out.” Wife replies: “Who’s afraid of a mouse!!!” If a wife wants her husband’s attention, she just has to look sad and uncomfortable. If a husband wants his wife’s attention, he just has to look comfortable & happy. A Philosopher HUSBAND said: “Every WIFE is a ‘Mistress’ of her Husband... “Miss” for first year & “Stress” for rest of the life.” Do you remember the tingling feeling when you made the decision to get married? That was common sense leaving your body. Son: “Dad, I got selected for a role in a play!” Dad: “What role are you playing?” Son: “A husband!” Dad: “Stupid, ask for a role with dialogues!” Man outside phone booth: “Excuse me, you have been holding the phone for 29 minutes and you haven’t spoken a word” Man inside: “I am talking to my wife.”

Weather for The Dogs
To tell the weather, go to your back door and look for the dog. If the dog is at the door and he is wet, it’s raining. If the dog is standing there really soaking wet, it is raining very hard. If the dog’s fur looks like it’s been rubbed the wrong way, it’s windy. If the dog has snow on his back, it’s probably snowing. Of course, to be able to tell the weather like this, you have to leave the dog outside all the time, especially if you expect bad weather. ‘Eating healthy is expensive.’ Heard this before? Everyone is faced with challenges eating a wholesome meal both financially and nutritionally especially with all the processed and refined foods that line our grocery shelves. Eating too much processed foods can lead to the development of chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease, food sensitivities, digestive disorders, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune diseases, and even cancer. There are numerous ways to stay within your food budget and still eat nutrient rich foods. But this can only happen if you are willing to cook for yourself and family. Choose whole foods that are seasonal, organic, unprocessed and local. Choose inexpensive protein sources such as beans and rice, eggs, lentils, quinoa, millet, nuts and seeds, spinach, chard, broccoli, and tofu. Substitute packaged sweet snacks loaded with refined flours and sugars with whole fruits. Buying in bulk is always cheaper than buying food items in a can or package. Plan your meals ahead of time with grocery lists to help with your budget, time, shortages, overages, and impulsive buying. Prepare meals at home. Why pay for unnecessary costs like packaging and someone else cooking for you? Cook extra so you can have leftovers for future meals. Crock pots, rice cookers, and pressure cooks are great for making bigger family style meals. Home cooked meals are more nutritious, balanced, and contains lower levels of salt and fat, and tastes better! Being frugal doesn’t mean that meals have to be boring. Liven up your meals with different herbs and spices. Most importantly . . . . . have fun! Miriam is a Certified Wellness Coach and Holistic Nutrition Consultant. www. positivelywhole.com. Credit Card Debt in America
Even as household income and employment rates are ticking up in the U.S., credit card balances are at all-time highs. And as the Fed raises rates, credit card rates rise in tandem, meaning consumers could pay billions in extra interest charges. Americans paid banks $104 billion in credit card interest and fees in 2018, up 11% from the prior year, and up 35% over the last five years, as Fed rate increases have been passed on to consumers. MagnifyMoney analyzed FDIC data through March 2018 for each bank whose deposits are insured by the FDIC. Americans carry $687 billion in credit card debt that is not paid in full each month. This estimate includes people paying interest, as well as those carrying a balance on a card with a 0% intro rate. We based the estimate on a CFPB study of credit card account data that found 29% of total credit card balances are paid off each month, implying 71% of credit card balances revolve each month. We applied the percentage to the Federal Reserve’s revolving credit balance data less $72 billion in non-credit card revolving debt to reach $687 billion in credit card balances carried over month to month. 44% of credit card accounts aren’t paid in full each month, according to the American Bankers Association. Those that don’t pay in full tend to have higher balances,

which is why the percentage of balances not paid in full (71%) is higher than the percentage of accounts not paid in full (44%). The average credit card balance is $6,348 for individuals with a credit card, according to Experian. This excludes store credit cards, which have an average balance of $1,841. Both figures include the statement balances of individuals who pay their balance in full each month. The World’s Six Best Doctors
I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world. In some others’ eyes, my life is the epitome of success. However, aside from work, I have little joy. In the end, my wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to. At this moment, lying on my bed and recalling my life, I realize that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in have paled and become meaningless in the face of my death. You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone bear your sickness for you. Material things lost can be found or replaced. But there is one thing that can never be found when it’s lost - Life. Whichever stage in life you are in right now, with time, you will face the day when the curtain comes down. Treasure love for your family, love for your spouse, love for your friends. Treat yourself well and cherish others. As we grow older, and hopefully wiser, we realize that a $300 or a $30 watch both tell the same time. You will realize that your true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world. Whether you fly first class or economy, if the plane goes down - you go down with it. Therefore, I hope you realize, when you have mates, buddies and old friends, brothers and sisters, who you chat with, laugh with, talk with, have sing songs with, talk about north-south-east-west or heaven and earth, that is true happiness! Don’t educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy. So when they grow up they will know the value of things and not the price. Eat your food as your medicine, otherwise you have to eat medicine as your food. The one who loves you will never leave you for another because, even if there are 100 reasons to give up, he or she will find a reason to hold on. There is a big difference between a human being and being human. Only a few really understand it. You are loved when you are born. You will be loved when you die. In between, you have to manage! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Making Valentine’s Day Special for Seniors
Customers Order
A customer sent an order to a distributor for a large amount of goods totaling a great deal of money. The distributor noticed that the previous bill hadn’t been paid, so he asked his collections manager to leave a voice-mail for them saying, “We can’t ship your new order until you pay for the last one.” The next day the collections manager received a collect phone call, “Please cancel the order. We can’t wait that long.” The publisher does not assume any responsibility for the contents of any advertising herein, and all representation or warranties made in such advertising are those of the advertisers and not the publishers.
Valentine’s Day is all about love and romance, and who doesn’t like that? The extra-special attention lathered upon us each February 14th evokes the warm and gooey feelings we felt when we first fell in love. For many seniors, however, this annual day of love can be just another day, or worse, a day of increased loneliness and sorrow. I think about my own grandmother who spent nearly 60 years with the love of her life, and the last 15 missing him. I find it unfathomable the pain she must feel not having her love lying next to her each night, not having his strong hands to hold, or his lips to kiss. While I’m sure there is not a single day that passes without his memory in her mind, I imagine Valentine’s Day brings some added weight to her sorrow. My grandmother’s story is unfortunately not unique. Many seniors are widowed or living alone, and finding a special way to show them some extra love on Valentine’s Day can make a big difference. Here are some ways you can fill a senior’s Valentine’s Day with extra love: Have flowers delivered, or deliver them yourself if you live nearby. If your loved one has old letters from the love of their life, dust them off and read them together. A special treat is even sweeter when it’s shared, so sit awhile and share something yummy. Get the kids involved – seniors love homemade valentines, even better if they include a recent photo. Share a special breakfast or lunch and stories of your loved one has shown they love you. Frame an old photo of you with your senior, include a card about how much they mean to you. Continue a tradition they may have shared with their late spouse. Be there –your time and presence can add happiness to a day that may have otherwise been lonely There are so many ways to bring happiness to hearts of seniors on Valentine’s Day!
