As I was pulling into work, I was following this car. The sign in the back window says, “Learning stick sorry for any delay.” Knowing this information, I was very patient with their slow shifting, and honestly, they were doing pretty well for still learning. Then I asked myself a tough question: Would I have been just as patient if the sign hadn’t been there? I can almost definitely say no. We don’t know what someone is going through. We don’t wear signs that illustrate our personal struggles. You don’t see signs taped to people’s shirts that say, “Going through a divorce” or “Lost a child” or “Feeing depressed” or “Diagnosed with cancer.” If we could read visually what those around us are going through we would definitely be nicer. But we shouldn’t have to see signs and have reasons to treat strangers with kindness. We should do it anyway, whether we know what is going on or not. Whether they deserve it or not. Let’s give everyone an extra dose of patience, kindness, and love. Laugh until you gasp for breath. 6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves (and GOD). Be ALIVE while you are alive. 7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. 8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. Purina Diet

Yesterday I was at my local super market buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Biscuit, the Wonder Dog and was in the checkout line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I’m retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IV’s in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete, so it works well, and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff a golden retrievers bottom and a car hit us both. I was at the funeral of my dearest friend, ¬ my mother. She finally had lost her long battle with cancer. The hurt was so intense; I found it hard to breathe at times. Always supportive, mother clapped loudest at my school plays, held the box of tissues while listening to my first heartbreak, comforted me at my father’s death, encouraged me in college, and prayed for me my entire life. When mother’s illness was diagnosed, my sister had a new baby and my brother had recently married his childhood sweetheart, so it fell on me, the 27-year-old middle child without entanglements, to take care of her. I counted it an honor. ‘What now, Lord?’ I asked sitting in church. My life stretched out before me as an empty abyss. My brother sat stoically with his face toward the cross while clutching his wife’s hand. My sister sat slumped against her husband’s shoulder, his arms around her as she cradled their child. All so deeply grieving, no one noticed I sat alone. My place had been with our mother, preparing her meals, helping her walk, taking her to the doctor, seeing to her medication, reading the Bible together. Now she was with the Lord... My work was finished, and I was alone. I heard a door open and slam shut at the back of the church. Quick footsteps hurried along the carpeted floor. An exasperated young man looked around briefly and then sat next to me. He folded his hands and placed them on his lap. His eyes were brimming with tears. He began to sniffle. “I’m late,” he explained, though no explanation was necessary. After several eulogies, he leaned over and commented, “Why do they keep calling Mary by the name of Margaret?’’ “Because, that was her name, Margaret. Never Mary, no one called her Mary,’” I whispered. I wondered why this person couldn’t have sat on the other side of the church. He interrupted my grieving with his tears and fidgeting. Who was this stranger anyway? “Isn’t this the Lutheran church?” “No, the Lutheran church is across the street.” “Oh.” “I believe you’re at the wrong funeral, Sir.” The solemnest of the occasion mixed with the realization of the man’s mistake bubbled up inside me and came out as laughter. I cupped my hands over my face, hoping it would be interpreted as sobs. The creaking pew gave me away. Sharp looks from other mourners only made the situation seem more hilarious. I peeked at the bewildered, misguided man seated beside me. He was laughing too, as he glanced around, deciding it was too late for an uneventful exit. I imagined Mother laughing. At the final ‘Amen,’ we darted out a door and into the parking lot. “I do believe we’ll be the talk of the town,” he smiled. He said his name was Rick and, since he had missed his aunt’s funeral, asked me out for a cup of coffee. That afternoon began a lifelong journey for me with this man who

attended the wrong funeral, but was in the right place. A year after our meeting, we were married at a country church where he was the assistant pastor. This time we both arrived at the same church, right on time. In my time of sorrow, God gave me laughter. In place of loneliness, God gave me love. This past June, we celebrated our twenty-second wedding anniversary. Whenever anyone asks us how we met, Rick tells them, ‘Her mother and my Aunt Mary introduced us, and it’s truly a match made in heaven.’

“History is not history, unless it is the truth.” -Abraham Lincoln Immediately after creating the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress voted to purchase and import 20,000 copies of Scripture for the people of this nation. Patrick Henry, who is called the firebrand of the American Revolution, is still remembered for his words, “Give me liberty or give me death” - but in current textbooks, the context of these words is omitted. Here is what he actually said: “An appeal to arms and the God of hosts is all that is left us. But we shall not fight our battle alone. There is a just God that presides over the destinies of nations. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone. Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it Almighty God. I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death.” These sentences have been erased from our textbooks. Was Patrick Henry a Christian? The following year, 1776, he wrote this: “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great Nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For that reason alone, people of other faiths have been afforded freedom of worship here.” Consider these words that Thomas Jefferson wrote in the front of his well-worn Bible: “I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus. I have little doubt that our whole country will soon be rallied to the unity of our creator.” He was also the chairman of the American Bible Society, which he considered his highest and most important role. On July 4, 1821, President Adams said, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: “It connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.” Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President of the United States reaffirmed this truth when he wrote, “The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country.” In 1782, the United States Congress voted this resolution: “The Congress of the United States recommends and approves the Holy Bible for use in all schools.” William Holmes McGuffey is the author of the McGuffey Reader, which was used for over 100 years in our public schools, with over 125 million copies sold, until it was stopped in 1963. President Lincoln called him the “Schoolmaster of the Nation.” Listen to these words of Mr. McGuffey: “The Christian religion is the religion of our country. From it are derived our nation, on the character of God, on the great moral Governor of the universe. On its doctrines are founded the peculiarities of our free Institutions. From no source has the author drawn more conspicuously than from the sacred Scriptures. For all these extracts

from the Bible, I make no apology.” Of the first 108 universities founded in America, 106 were distinctly Christian, including the first, Harvard University, chartered in 1636. In the original Harvard Student Handbook, rule number 1 was that students seeking entrance must know Latin and Greek so that they could study the Scriptures: “Let every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider well, the main end of his life and studies, is, to know God and Jesus Christ, which is eternal life, John 17:3; and therefore, to lay Jesus Christ as the only foundation for our children to follow the moral prin-

ciples of the Ten Commandments.” James Madison, the primary author of the Constitution of the United States, said this: “We have staked the whole future of all our political constitutions upon the capacity of each of ourselves to govern ourselves according to the moral principles of the Ten Commandments.” Most of what you read in this article has been erased from our textbooks. Revisionists have rewritten history to remove the truth about our country’s Christian roots. You are encouraged to share this with others, so that the truth of our nation’s history will be told. Trips to the Store

After Mr. and Mrs. Fenton retired, Mrs. Fenton insisted her husband accompany her on her trips to the local box store. Unfortunately, Mr. Fenton was like most men - he found shopping boring and preferred to get in and get out. Equally unfortunately, Mrs. Fenton was like most women -- she loved to browse. One-day Mrs. Fenton received the following letter from her local box store. Dear Mrs. Fenton, Over the past six months, your husband has been causing quite a commotion in our store. We cannot tolerate this behavior and may be forced to ban both of you from the store. Our complaints against Mr. Fenton are listed below and are documented by our video surveillance cameras. 1. June 15: Took 24 boxes of men contraceptives and randomly put them in people’s carts when they weren’t looking. 2. July 2: Set all the alarm clocks in Housewares to go off at 5-minute intervals. 3. July 19: Walked up to an employee and told her in an official voice, “Code 3 in Housewares - get on it right away.” 4. August 4: Went to the Service Desk and tried to put a bag of M&M’s on layaway. 5. September 14: Moved a “CAUTION - WET FLOOR” sign to a carpeted area. 6. September 15: Set up a tent in the camping department and told other shoppers he’d invite them in if they would bring pillows and blankets from the

bedding department. 7. September 23: When a clerk asked if they could help him he began crying and screamed, “Why can’t you people just leave me alone?” 8. October 4: Looked right into the security camera and used it as a mirror while he picked his nose. 9. November 10: While handling guns in the hunting department, he asked the clerk where the antidepressants were. 10. December 3: Darted around the store suspiciously while loudly humming the “Mission Impossible” theme. 11. December 6: In the auto department, he practiced his “Madonna look” by using different sizes of funnels. 12. December 18: Hid in a clothing rack and when people browsed through, yelled “PICK ME! PICK ME!” 13. December 21: When an announcement came over the loud speaker, he assumed a fetal position and moaned, “OH NO! IT’S THOSE VOICES AGAIN!” And last, but not least.......... 14. December 23: Went into a fitting room, shut the door, waited awhile, then yelled very loudly, “Hey! As I turned to go down the aisle in the grocery store I spotted him... an elderly man appearing to be lost. As I walked closer I could see a sad look in his eyes. I felt an urge to say something to him. “What should I say?” I wondered to myself. “Can I help you find something?” I heard myself saying. “Thank you, I really need some help,” he answered. “Tell me what you are looking for and I’ll try to help you find it,” I said. “Why did you stop and talk to me? You don’t work here, do you?” he asked. “Well, I could see by the look on your face that you seemed to need help,” I answered. With that, he introduced himself. “Hi, I’m Albert. This is the first time since my wife died that I’ve been to the grocery store. My wife always did the shopping and I’m really lost in this big store. Thank you for helping me.” I leaned over and gave Albert a hug. I told him that only a few weeks earlier my son, Todd, had died in a car accident. We shared a faint smile knowing that we both had been through a tough time. As I pondered what had happened I realized that going though this grieving time had brought something out in me that wasn’t there before. My eyes seemed to be opened and I noticed other hurting people. I’m sure the year before I would have been like the other people in the store, who walked by and didn’t see the hurt in this man’s eyes. Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada in California’s Owens Valley between the towns of Lone Pine to the south and Independence to the north Manzanar is most widely known as the site of one of ten American concentration camps where over 110,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II from December 1942 to 1945. After the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States Government swiftly moved to begin solving the “Japanese Problem” on the West Coast of the United States. In the evening hours of that same day, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested selected “enemy” aliens, including more than 5,500 Issei men. The California government pressed for action by the national government, as many citizens were alarmed about potential activities by people of Japanese descent. On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which authorized the Secretary of War to designate military commanders to prescribe military areas and to exclude “any or all persons” from such areas. The order also authorized the construction of what would later be called “relocation centers” by the War Relocation Authority (WRA) to house those who were to be excluded.[49] This order resulted in the forced relocation of over 120,000 Japanese Americans, two-thirds of whom were native-born American citizens. The rest had been prevented from becoming citizens by federal law. Over 110,000 were incarcerated in the ten concentration camps located far inland and away from the coast. Manzanar was the first of the ten concentration camps to be established. Initially, it was a temporary “reception center”, known as the Owens Valley Reception Center from March 21, 1942, to May 31, 1942. At that time, it was operated by the US Army’s Wartime Civilian Control Administration (WCCA). The Owens Valley Reception Center was transferred to the WRA on June 1, 1942, and officially became the “Manzanar War Relocation Center.” The first Japanese American incarcerees to arrive at Manzanar were volunteers who helped build the camp. By mid–April, up to 1,000 Japanese Americans were arriving daily, and by July, the population of the camp neared 10,000. Over 90 percent of the incarcerees were from the Los Angeles area, with the rest coming from Stockton, California; and Bainbridge Island, Washington. Many were farmers and fishermen. Manzanar held 10,046 incarcerees at its peak, and a total of 11,070 people were incarcerated there. You know the days where you have a To Do List as long as your arm? A pile of laundry that could warrant its own zip code? A kitchen that looks like a tornado went through it? Yeah, today was one of those days. She came up to me so sweetly and said, “Mommy, how ‘bout you paint my nails, and then I paint yours?!” “How about Mom just paints yours sweetie?” Her face fell. “OK, because you don’t have time for me to paint yours too?” Yes, that was one reason for my answer. What if she painted them and the baby woke up? I wouldn’t be able to grab him with wet nails. What if my laundry buzzed and I had to switch loads? Can’t do that with wet nails. What about my hair that needed to be blow dried? Can’t do that with wet nails. The bills I was trying to pay, the calendar I was trying to update, the dishes I needed to wash. You can’t do any of those things with wet nails. Right? But her little face was so disappointed when I told her I didn’t have time for her to paint my nails. So, I changed my mind, and told her she could paint them. And that little face of hers lit up, and she got right to work painting them. And do you know what happened? The baby didn’t wake up from his nap. The laundry sat in the dryer. My hair dried on its own. The bills, the calendar, and the dishes----it was all waiting for me when she was done. It took 10 minutes out of my day. But it was the highlight of hers. We can be so quick to say, “no” to our children with things that we feel aren’t important enough to warrant the extra time. But so often these things that aren’t important enough to us, are a big deal in the eyes of a child. Two elderly women were out driving in a large car. Both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself “I must be losing it; I could have sworn we just went through a red light.” After a few more minutes they came to another intersection and the light was red again and again they went right through. This time the woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous and decided to pay very close attention to the road and the next intersection to see what was going on. At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was definitely red, and they went right through and she turned to the other woman and said, “Mildred! Despite the alarming increase in US opioid overdoses, most of us would be hard pressed to describe exactly what happens in the body during one. Here’s a step-by-step explainer. While there’s no one circumstance that will push a body over the edge from a high to an overdose, there are certain things that appear to put a person at greater risk: Having been in detox and then returning to the drugs, mixing opioids with other sedatives (like alcohol or benzos), and in some cases, using them in high doses (thanks to the existence of super-powerful opioids like fentanyl and carfentanil, this can happen unbeknownst to the user). A person on the verge of an overdose rarely realizes what is happening to them, but there are easily recognizable signs that other people might spot, including extreme drowsiness, cold hands, cloudy thinking, nausea and/or vomiting, and especially slowed breathing (fewer than ten breaths per minute). First, the drug spreads throughout your body. When you take an opioid, whether a pill or an injectable, the drug enters the body and travels through your synapses, through the heart and into your lungs, where the blood gets flushed with oxygen before getting drawn back into the heart once again. With the next pump of your heart, your now opioid-rich blood is pushed out to the rest of the body, where it plugs into the system of opioid receptors all over your body. When it hits the brain, you get happy. Once the opioid molecules are ferried across the blood-brain barrier, they enter a section of the brain at the center of your reward circuitry called the nucleus accumbens, where the happiness hormone dopamine is produced. There, the drug latches onto GABAergic neurons. Imagine GABA as a dam: They make sure our dopamine doesn’t overflow, which can cause agitation and paranoia. Opioid molecules blow that dam open, and let dopamine spill over into the bloodstream, creating a feeling of bliss, way beyond what our GABA cells would normally allow us to experience. Soon the high evens out, and even before the rush is over, you might start to nod off, head dipping and jerking as you drift between waking and sleeping. Your breath starts to slow. The opioid works on the systems that control both sleep and breathing: At the base of your brain lies a respiratory control center that drives your breathing, reacting to the level of carbon dioxide and oxygen in your blood to spur you to breathe. During an overdose, the slowed breathing that occurs with opioid ingestion of any kind becomes dangerously slow, leading to a complete stop. Then your heart. Your heart rate slows as the opioid suppresses neurological signals. The oxygen level falls low enough that the heart starts having abnormal rhythms; the heart is not beating properly. At this point some overdose patients have sudden cardiac arrest. Things begin to shut down. Because there is an over-

whelming amount of opioid in your brain, your body stops receiving the correct signals at all to breathe. Your lungs and heart are barely working. With lungs and heart barely working, your brain begins to be damaged by lack of oxygen. The brain is highly sensitive to lack of oxygen; permanent brain damage sets in after four minutes of oxygen deprivation in most situations. Variables such as the temperature of the body can affect the damage to the brain—the colder the body, the more reduced the brain damage. If you’re receiving CPR during this period, brain damage can be prevented or reduced. You foam at the mouth, or choke. Sometimes opioid overdose can include pulmonary edema (fluid leak into the airspaces of the lung). This is a noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, meaning it is not caused by fluid backup from a failing heart; doctors are still unsure of the exact mechanism behind this event. This manifests as foam coming out of your mouth. It is not uncommon for opioid overdose patients to experience aspiration. This is when your body’s natural gag response is suppressed or eliminated by the opioid’s effects on the respiratory control center of the brain. As you become increasingly less conscious, the natural secretions in the back of the throat are not ejected or swallowed. Opioid patients who vomit can also aspirate their vomit and die. Your brain gets permanently damaged. Opioid overdose can cause seizures from lack of oxygen to the brain. These

seizures can further damage the brain. Brain damage–from mild to severe–is not often discussed with opioid overdose but is a real possibility. Overdose patients can end up paralyzed and unable to speak. FYI - From 1999 to 2015, more than 183,000 people have died in the U.S. from overdoses related to prescription opioids. Overdosing is now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, accounting for more deaths than traffic fatalities or gun homicides and suicides. A lady goes for a job interview in an office. The interviewer decides to start with the basics. “So, miss, can you tell us your age, please?” The lady counts carefully on her fingers for about 30 seconds before replying “Ehhhh .. 22!”. The interviewer looks at her a little puzzled and then tries another straightforward one to break the ice. “And can you tell us your height, please?”. The young lady stands up and produces a measuring tape from her handbag. She then traps one end under her foot and extends the tape to the top of her head. She checks the measurement and announces, “Five foot two!” This isn’t looking good, so the interviewer goes for the real basics. “And ehh, just to confirm for our records, your name please?” The lady bobs her head from side to side for about twenty seconds, mouthing something silently to herself, before replying “Mandy!”. The interviewer is completely baffled at this stage, so he asks, “Just out of curiosity, miss. We can understand your counting on your fingers to work out your age, and the measuring tape for your height is obvious, but what were you doing when we asked you your name?” “Ohh that!”, she replies, “That’s just me running through, ‘Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you....’ .”

A Wreck

Why Do People Speed?

I often ask myself this question while I am driving from Minden to Carson City or on any highway for that matter. As do many, I drive the speed limit, but vehicles are always passing me and some of the drivers even flip me the bird because I am driving the speed limit. When someone goes flying by me, I always think, “Oh, there goes someone who is in a hurry to their own funeral.” However, in researching this subject I found a few other reasons people speed. Speaking in general, the reason why people speed is because they are impatient and in a hurry. More often than not, people speed because they lack the ability to be more patient. In addition, they do not have the patience to wait. This is extremely true in the case of drivers. However, drivers who think that they have better driving skills compared to the majority of people feel that they can break laws without getting caught. In such cases, they can put the lives of other drivers and people in jeopardy. History is full of drivers who have caused accidents and taken lives, and put the lives of other people at risk. This results in property damage and has cost them a considerable amount of money. But for some drivers, they want to speed up simply for the reason that they want to feel in authority on the road. They feel satisfied and happy when they think they are the fastest driver around. Thus, they want to speed up to satisfy that desire. Speeders beware PLEASE! Don’t jeopardize the lives
