“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” My Gram On Thanksgiving
My Gram had a wonderful day yesterday at my mom’s house for Thanksgiving. She didn’t remember one of our names, didn’t know whose kids where whose, who was dating/engaged/married to whom, or the last time we were all together. She asked us a million questions, most repeats from just moments before. What my Gram does know at this point is love. We haven’t laughed so hard and been so at ease in a long time. The whole family was focused on her glow, her laugh, and her smile. This woman raised all of us. She let us ride mattresses down the stairs, ski on the little hill in her backyard, watch movies at late night sleepovers. She taught all 9 grandkids how to swim by holding us up by our underwear in the pool. She taught us how to be creative, make Christmas cookies, and help those less fortunate than us. It’s so unbelievably hard to let it sink in that she doesn’t remember our names or our significant others or children. But for her sake it’s all OK. We shake it off. I tell her that it’s just alright and that she’s living in the moment and that’s how it’s supposed to be. As long as she’s happy the memory doesn’t need to be here. There’s one name she did remember, though. She didn’t call him Daddy, she didn’t call him Grandpa, or Great Grandpa. She called him by his name: Charlie. Her Charlie. We miss what my Gram used to be and we miss her Charlie like hell. But yesterday was a wonderful day for us. We had her laugh and through that laugh and the way she said his name, we had Grampy there too. (N. Chrzan)

Family
We are living and growing together; We do our best to keep our word and teach by example; We strive to act with integrity, compassion and consideration towards others, ourselves and each other. We are taking care of each as we take care of ourselves; We respect who we are, and strive to make the most of the gifts we are given; We honor each other’s talents, though they may be different from our own; We strive to be a consistent source of encouragement and acknowledgment for one another. We love each other, not for what we do, but for who we are at the very core of our beings; We accept that, being human, mistakes happen; and when they do, we strive to find the blessing within the opportunity; for we know that understanding is a valuable result of learning the lessons of life. As we endeavor to not take each other for granted, we are eternally vigilant; We take the time to listen to each other, so we are not surprised by growth and change. We give thanks for each day we have together, and love each other no matter what. We are family! (Author unknown)

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Covid: Tired of hearing about it?
I am a normal person who is tired of hearing about Covid. Maybe you are, too. I try to avoid the media these days but apparently there are “important issues” about the President’s authority to enforce vaccination in businesses with over 100 employees. It sure sounds as if a lot of people are forgetting some common sense. Let’s get our facts straight. Any individual, private business or organization has the right to deny access for anything their little heart desires. If a business owner or organization decides that every employee or customer must wear a purple hat, we would wear the hats or, if we don’t like it, we would search for other employment or shop somewhere else. If it turns out that customers don’t like purple hats, then the business would have the option of changing policy. It’s that simple. What a wonderful country this is. If an organization—say a Scout camp—decrees that campers must have a vaccine in order to attend, they are within their rights. Many, many organizations have such health requirements. You’re also not allowed in with chicken pox. It’s common sense and it’s right. If a person says we can’t enter his home with loaded guns, he is on solid ground. We would likely abide by his rules. Why? Because it’s his castle. Only one entity in this country does not have the right to impose such rules: The government. The government can impose restrictions on its own employees, but it’s the same game. Employees have the right to leave; the government can fire them CVA 350 LEGEND W/BURRIS SCOPE, NEVER fired $550, Mossberg .410 pump, never fired $275, Tristar 12 gauge over/under, never fired $275 (775)901-2076
Shy guy
A very shy guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the bar. After an hour of gathering up his courage he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, “Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for awhile?” She responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, “No, I won’t go home with you tonight!” Everyone in the bar is now staring at them. Naturally, the guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table. After a few minutes, the woman walks over to him and apologizes. She smiles at him and says, “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I’m a graduate student in psychology and I’m studying how people respond to embarrassing situations.” To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, “What do you mean $200?” JACKRABBIT PLUMBING. or change the rules. This is the dunderheaded argument the media claims is “raging across our country” and causing me to be even more distracted than normal. Mostly because the media has determined it is “an issue.” It is not. The anti-vaxxers say we shouldn’t get the vaccination and the vaxxers say we should. Again, it’s a free choice, regardless of what someone tries to tell us. I chose to do it. I’m older and I have several co-morbidities. I researched. I asked a lot of people who were knowledgeable about Covid. I felt the best science was telling me that my odds were better. No other person in this country will intimidate me one way or the other, and no other person in this country need follow my lead. I don’t care. Before you label me as cruel and heartless, here are a few facts: Most of us realize that loaded guns in the hands of children are a bad idea and we advise our children to never point a gun at something they don’t intend to kill. Yet it is estimated that nearly 1300 children are killed annually in gun accidents. Tragic. Most of us understand that alcohol and automobiles are a dangerous combination and we advise our young adults to not drink and drive. And an alcohol-related traffic death occurs every 52 minutes in this country. Most of us, I assume, don’t want to be hit by a speeding automobile and we look both ways before crossing the street. We teach our kids the same thing. But this year over 6000 pedestrians will be killed by the proverbial pie wagon. We are as “informed” as we can possibly be at this point about Covid. We’ll get smarter about it as time goes by. We know that
it is contagious. We know it will kill some of us, lamentably, a small number of young people. The rest will survive. This is the reason I say to anyone who refuses the Covid vaccine: “The best science says your odds are better if you get it. But if you don’t, I wish you well and I hope you don’t suffer and die.” I mean it sincerely. Even though I said I don’t care. This is what ought to be said to an individual, business or organization exercising their rights. Not in judgment or unkindness. Here are the known facts and the choice is yours. We will bury some of you and that will be tragic. But would we not say the same about the pie wagon? Now let’s remove the portions of the broadcast media devoted to Covid. Enough of the newspaper segments devoted to Covid coverage. If we want “normal” back, let’s go there, intentionally. Actor Morgan Freeman said something a while back, profound in its simplicity. He was talking about another “issue” and he said “If you’re tired of hearing about it, then stop talking about it.” (rboehner) WANTED: LICENSE PLATES, OLD MOTORCYCLE Helmets, Old Pre-1970’s Levi’s, Musical instruments, Old Watches and Old Lighters, John (775)315-4930 DIAMONIQUE WEDDING RING, SIZE 4½ $40 (775)2672472

English as a fifth language
A European pulls up at a bus stop where two Americans are waiting. “Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?” he asks. The two Americans just stare at him. “Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?” he tries. The two continue to stare. “Parlare Italiano?” No response. “Hablan ustedes Espanol?” Still nothing. Right now you’re probably sitting alone wondering how life got to be this way. You’re probably wondering how you got here. Well I may not know the answers to those questions, but I do know that you went through too much to feel sorry now. You may have had a rough time in school and you may have hated life more often than not, but guess what? You’re here now. All that stuff that made you feel like you weren’t worth it and wouldn’t amount to anything? It’s nothing now. You made it through, you overcame it all. No one else. You. Whatever you’re dealing with right now is the same way. You might not be happy. You might think that you’re watching your life’s reruns, but at no point is it ever okay to give up. You never did before, so why start now? You’ve come too far and hurt too much to quit now. The only thing holding you back from whatever you want is yourself. Get up. Do what you need to do, no point in putting it off. You’re a success already, you just have to realize it. I believe in you. You’ve got this. Naptime
An old, tired-looking dog wandered into the yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home. He followed me into the house, down the hall, and fell asleep on the couch. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out. The next day he was back, resumed his position on the couch and slept for an hour. This continued for several weeks. Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: “Every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.” The next day he arrived with a different note pinned to his collar: “He lives in a home with four children -- he’s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?” AMMO FOR SALE ONE BOX 38 SUPER (NEW) AND one box 44 Mag (commercial reloaded) $40 each, Call George/ Wellington (805)469-0124 PUBLISHER’S NOTICE: All real estate advertising in this paper is subject to the Fair Housing Act which makes it illegal to advertise “any preference, limitations or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin, or an intention to make any such preference, limitation or discrimination.” This magazine will not knowingly accept any advertisement for real estate which is a violation of the law; our readers are hereby informed that all dwellings advertised in this publication are available on an equal opportunity basis. Speed Trap
A man was speeding down the highway, feeling secure in a gaggle of cars all traveling at the same speed. However, as they passed a speed trap, he got nailed with an infrared speed detector and was pulled over. The officer handed him the citation, received his signature and was about to walk away when the man asked, “Officer, I know I was speeding, but I don’t think it’s fair - there were plenty of other cars around me who were going just as fast, so why did I get the ticket?” “Ever go fishing?” the policeman suddenly asked the man. “Ummm, yeah...” the startled man replied. The officer grinned and added, “Did you catch all the fish?”

Answer one question
Recently a teacher, a garbage collector, and a lawyer wound up together at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter informed them that in order to get into Heaven, they would each have to answer one question. St. Peter addressed the teacher and asked, “What was the name of the ship that crashed into the iceberg? They made a movie about it.” The teacher answered quickly, “That would be the Titanic.” St. Peter let him through the gate. St. Peter turned to the garbage man and, figuring Heaven didn’t really need all the odors that this guy might bring with him, decided to make the question a little harder: “How many people died on the ship?” Fortunately for him, the trash man had seen the movie and answered, “about 1,500.” “That’s right! You may enter.” St. Peter then turned to the lawyer. “Name them.” RENT ME FOR WINTER CLEANING, PUT A roll-off dumpster at your home, you load, we remove (775)297-2320 “The Christmas spirit is a spirit of giving and forgiving.”
Are Blind Pilots Flying?
One day at a busy airport, the passengers on a commercial airliner are seated waiting for the pilot to show up so they can get under way. The pilot and copilot finally appear in the rear of the plane and begin walking up to the cockpit through the center aisle. Both appear to be blind; the pilot is using a white cane, bumping into passengers right and left as he stumbles down the aisle. The copilot is using a guide dog. Both have their eyes covered with sunglasses. At first, the passengers do not react thinking that it must be some sort of practical joke. After a few minutes though, the engines start revving, and the airplane begins moving down the runway. The passengers look at each other with some uneasiness. They start whispering among themselves and look desperately to the stewardesses for reassurance. Yet, the plane starts accelerating rapidly, and people begin panicking. Some passengers are praying, and as the plane gets closer and closer to the end of the runway, the voices are becoming more and more hysterical. When the plane has less than twenty feet of runway left, there is a sudden change in the pitch of the shouts as everyone screams at once. At the very last moment, the plane lifts off and is airborne. Up in the cockpit, the copilot breathes a sigh of relief and tells the pilot: “You know, one of these days the passengers aren’t going to scream, and we aren’t going to know when to take off!”

Out in the car...
A man had been drinking at the bar for hours when he mentioned something about his girlfriend being out in the car. The bartender, concerned because it was so cold, went to check on her. When he looked inside the car, he saw the drunk’s buddy, Pete, and the man’s girlfriend kissing in the back seat. The bartender shook his head and walked back inside. He told the drunk that he thought it might be a good idea to check on his girlfriend. The drunk staggered outside to the car, saw Pete and his girlfriend kissing, then walked back into the bar, laughing. “What’s so funny?” the bartender asked. “That darned Pete!” the drunk chortled. “He’s so drunk, he thinks he’s me!”

Pioneer Christmas: A Family Tradition as told to me by my grandparents who experienced Christmas as children in the 1880s and 1890s. It’s Christmas time. or, at least it will be in a few weeks. At this time more than any other time of the year, I think about what life was like for the pioneers of our region. I guess that I think about pioneer Christmas, because of the stories that my grandparents told me about their childhood Christmas memories in the early days. It’s been more than twenty years since the last of my grandparents passed away, but still each year at this time I remember the stories that I heard when I was a child. When my grandparents were children growing up, more than 125 years ago, Christmas was far different than how we celebrate this festive occasion today! In the late 1800s, preparations for Christmas began early in the autumn of each year. When the leaves began to turn brilliant red, Mother and the children headed to the forest to collect chestnuts which would be roasted and served with dinner on Christmas day. In November Christmas cakes and puddings were made and stored for the coming celebration. (I still remember the carrot puddings that my Grandma White made every autumn. I have tried many commercially made carrot puddings, but unfortunately none compare to the ones that my Grandma made!!) In late November or early December one of the highlights of the year on the pioneer Christmas social calendar occurred. Everyone dressed in their best clothes and headed to either the schoolhouse or the church for the Christmas pageant. The cares of surviving the harsh winter were forgotten, as everyone enjoyed the evening’s entertainment, provided by the children of the area. After the songs and skits, everyone enjoyed festive treats and the joy of being with their friends and family. On Christmas Eve it was early to bed for the all the children. After all, no one wanted Santa Claus to find them awake. On Christmas morning everyone got up a little earlier than usual. Now this may not seem unusual to us, after all, who amongst us doesn’t arise a little bit earlier than usual on Christmas morning, especially if there are children in the house! But the pioneers had to get up early to feed their animals and do the rest of the chores. While the work was being done in the barn the kitchen was also a hive of activity. Mother and the girls, would be making a special breakfast consisting of eggs, ham and perhaps pancakes. After breakfast everyone gathered around the Christmas tree which was decorated with home-made decorations and candles. The gifts under the tree were usually homemade, but there were some treats which came from the store. My grandmother remembered that there was usually an orange in their stockings, a rare commodity in this region in the late 1800s and early 1900s. She used to tell us, that they savoured every drop of that juicy fruit and that she and her sisters often put the peels in their clothing chests to scent their clothes. After the gifts had been opened the family either stayed home and enjoyed visits from friends and family or they went visiting. Usually a big family feast was held with aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins in attendance. We enjoy turkey at Christmas, but the pioneers of this region usually served goose or ham

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”
The thought police are watching you
Back in the 1990s, lots of jokes were made about “political correctness”, and almost everybody thought they were really funny. Unfortunately, very few people are laughing now because political correctness has become a way of life in America. If you say the “wrong thing” you could lose your job or you could rapidly end up in court. Every single day, the mainstream media bombards us with subtle messages that make it clear what is “appropriate” and what is “inappropriate”, and many Americans quietly fall in line with this unwritten speech code. But just because it is not written down somewhere does not mean that it isn’t real. In fact, this speech code becomes more restrictive and more suffocating with each passing year. The goal of the “thought Nazis” is to control what people say to one another, because eventually that will shape what most people think and what most people believe. If you don’t think this is true, just try the following experiment some time. Go to a public place where a lot of people are gathered and yell out something horribly politically incorrect such as “I love Jesus” and watch people visibly cringe. The name of “Jesus” has become a curse word in our politically correct society, and we have been trained to have a negative reaction to it in public places. After that, yell out something politically correct such as “I support ???” and watch what happens. You will probably get a bunch of smiles and quite a few people may even approach you to express their appreciation for what you just said. Of course this is going to vary depending on what area of the country you live in, but hopefully you get the idea. Billions of dollars of media “programming” has changed
20
the definitions of what people consider to be “acceptable” and what people consider to be “not acceptable”. Political correctness shapes the way that we all communicate with each other every single day, and it is only going to get worse in the years ahead. Sadly, many people simply have no idea what is happening to them. (M. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas (Hillbilly Style)
‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the hills the kinfolk were drinkin’ and tending their stills. The longjohns were hung by the chimney with care, no stockings were found, just underwear. The children were nestled so high in their bunks, their quilts made of skins from rabbits and skunks. Granny with her false teeth and gun on her knee, was waiting for Santa as she sat by the tree. From out of the barn there arose such a noise we thought it was Grandpa drinkin’ with the boys. But what to my wandering eye should appear, it was just cousin Cleatus in mama’s brassiere. And then from the rooftop we heard it at last, like the sound of thunder or a shot gun blast. We have Christmas dinner, it’s finally here, Granny kidnapped Santa while we shot his deer. Venison all covered with onions for stew and even old Santa enjoyed some too. His belly was full when he walked out the door but he couldn’t resist when we offered him more. Well that’s the story of our Christmas here. Merry Christmas to all ‘til the same time next year. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor”
I have a praise!
At the Sunday morning church service, the minister asked if anyone in the congregation would like to express praise for answered prayers. A lady stood and walked to the podium. She said, “I have a Praise. Two months ago, my husband, Tom, had a terrible bicycle crash and his scrotum was completely crushed. The pain was terrible and the doctors didn’t know if they could help him.” You could hear a muffled gasp from all the men in the congregation as they imagined the pain that poor Tom must have experienced. “Tom was unable to hold me or the children,” she went on, “and every movement caused him terrible pain. We prayed as the doctors performed a very delicate operation, which lasted for over five hours, and it turned out they were able to piece together the crushed remnants of Tom’s scrotum, and wrap wire around it to hold it in place.” Again, the men in the congregation were unnerved and squirmed uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery that was performed on Tom. “Now,” she announced in a quavering voice, “thank the Lord, after six weeks, Tom is now out of the hospital and the doctors say that with time, his scrotum should recover completely.” All the men sighed with relief. The minister rose and tentatively asked if anyone else had something to say. A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium. He said, “I’m Tom.” The entire congregation held its breath. “I just want to tell my wife that the word is sternum.”

You better be good!
Sarah and her thirteen-year-old sister had been fighting a lot this year. This happens when you combine a headstrong fouryear-old, who is sure she is always right, with a young adolescent. Sarah’s parents, trying to take advantage of her newfound interest in Santa Claus, reminded the four-year-old that Santa was watching and doesn’t like it when children fight. This had little impact. “I’ll just have to tell Santa about your misbehavior,” the mother said as she picked up the phone and dialed. Sarah’s eyes grew big as her mother asked “Mrs. Claus” (really Sarah’s aunt; Santa’s real line was busy) if she could put Santa on the line. Sarah’s mouth dropped open as Mom described to Santa (Sarah’s uncle) how the four-year-old was acting. But, when Mom said that Santa wanted to talk to her, she reluctantly took the phone. Santa, in a deepened voice, explained to her how there would be no presents Christmas morning to children who fought with their sisters. He would be watching, and he expected things to be better from now on. Sarah, now even more wide eyed, solemnly nodded to each of Santa’s remarks and silently hung the phone up when he was done. After a long moment, Mom (holding in her chuckles at being so clever) asked, “What did Santa say to you, dear?” In almost a whisper, Sarah sadly but matter-of-factly stated, “Santa said he won’t be bringing toys to my sister this year.” NDM-86 DRAGONOV COMPLETE, PLUS EXTRAS and a full case of 7N1 ammunition, Asking $11,000 or make offer, contact Pete at (775)315-4285

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Christmas Prayer
I said a Christmas prayer for you because the season’s near, I didn’t ask for riches but for gifts so much more dear. I asked for joyful gatherings with your family all around, and for carols to inspire you with their old familiar sound. I asked for quiet moments in your heart on Christmas morn, for a special time to celebrate the Savior who was born. I asked for friends to send their best, that you might know they care, I asked for peace and love and hope and I know God heard my prayer. (by N.
