Grandma’s Apron Pockets

I think the reason my Grandma, an early Idaho pioneer homesteader, wore the long cotton apron with big pockets and ties around the neck and waist was to protect one of the two dresses she owned. She probably thought she would just put it on to do chores and then her dress and demeanor would be fresh for visitors. Only problem is Grandma’s chores were never done. She was the first one up and last one down every day. She worked hard and so did her various aprons in small patterned print, brightened by ric rac or primary colored bias tape around the edges. There were many uses for the apron besides protecting the dress underneath: Pot holder to get hot pans of cookies or chicken from the oven. Tear dryer for children who had been hit by a tree branch or brother. Face wiper, after a bit of spit on the finger had washed the dirt off. Hiding place for little kids. Carrying eggs to the house, baby chickens back to the coop. Carrying kindling, logs and twigs to the house for the wood stove. Carrying garden seed in the pockets, produce in the upturned material and strips of ancient ones were used to tie tomato plants up to stakes in the garden. After the peas had been shelled or the corn shucked for dinner, the remains were gathered in the apron and carried out to the “pile.” She didn’t know the word compost

4

then. But she did it. In the fall, the apron held and carried apples, peaches, apricots and cherries into the house to be “preserved” for the winter enjoyment. The apron corner was used to tighten every jar of fruit and jam. It gave just the right leverage to the hand. It provided warmth on a chilly night by wrapping the edges upward over Grandma’s arms or downward over a small child. It contained many things…Clothes pins to hold the wash on the clothes line. A tiny tin of aspirin in case the arthritis acted up. Safety pins. A hankie to wipe the eyes or blow the nose. Peppermint candies. Unusual small rocks with lines in them, good for a teaching moment on how the earth was formed. Small feathers, buttons, driftwood to be used someday for an art project. Anything that her grandchildren had brought to show her and she vowed to keep forever. Nothing Lasts Forever! Not sweet, warm, loving Grandma who died of cancer, while everyone else was instructed not to talk about it. We were to “play like” Grandma would get better soon. Not any of Grandma’s aprons which were divided among her daughters after her death and ultimately ended up in the rag bag. Not the little things that she treasured and was going to make art projects with. Not the candies, clothes pins or rocks. Not the fruit, jam, jellies. They were all consumed that year. Except For Memories and Stories! Continued...

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Rookie’s First Assignment...

A rookie police officer was out for his first ride in a cruiser with an experienced partner. A call came in telling them to disperse some people who were loitering. The officers drove to the street and observed a small crowd standing on a corner. The rookie rolled down his window and said, “Let’s get off the corner, people.” A few glances, but no one moved, so he barked again, “Let’s get off that corner...NOW!” Intimidated, the group of people began to leave, casting puzzled stares in his direction. Proud of his first official act, the young policeman turned to his partner and asked, “Well, how did I do?” “Pretty good,” chuckled the veteran policemen, “especially since this is a bus stop!” ABC WINDOW CLEANERS, ROOF AND GUTTER cleaning, Re-screening, Pressure Washing and more. 30 years experience, NV#20161064184, CA#310507, Gardnerville resident (530)544-0590 RV STUFF: LEVELING RAMPS, TIRE COVERS, Jack Pads, 30-amp power cord, windshield cover for Class C cab, make offer (775)225-2022

Only the memories of Grandma in her pretty apron with her busy hands but open arms remain. Only the stories that we tell of her strength, wisdom and sweet spirit remain to remind us of who we came from. Only the stories and memories remind us of the time in our childhood when all problems could seemingly be solved with a yard of cotton and a beautiful woman. How blessed we were to have a grandma who wore an apron and taught us about life. The Dake House - Part 1 By Karen Dustman

The beautiful grey Dake home just south of Genoa positively screams Victorian, doesn’t it? It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also said to be one of the “most-haunted” sites in Nevada. Now if you’re wondering why a few ghosts might be hanging around . . . . well, there are several possible reasons! Charles W. Dake was the local undertaker in Genoa for many years (though he formally listed his occupation as “carpenter” in the 1880 census). Born in Canada, Dake settled in Alpine County, California when he came out to the west coast in the 1860s. By 1866 he was living in the new silver mining boomtown of Silver Mountain City. He became an Alpine County supervisor and even served as Chairman of the Board in 1868-69. By the time of the 1870 census Dake had moved with his family to Monitor, where he took a job as superintendent for the mill at the Globe Mine. Dake (like everyone else in the vicinity) invested in the local mines himself and (like so many others) once got cross-wise with mine promoter Lewis Chalmers. Chalmers had tried to buy Dake’s interest in the “Extenuate” mine in the 1870s, but Dake wisely refused to sell unless he first saw cash in hand. Chalmers complained to a London associate that a

friend had cautioned Dake to “sign nothing with us . . . we are bilks, and so forth.” And, well, if the shoe fits. . . . About 1872 Dake departed from Monitor, when the Globe Mine was shut down “temporarily.” He purchased his property in Genoa about the same time. And, being a carpenter, Dake is said to have built the house himself! But he probably wasn’t the first person to live at the site. The current house is believed to have replaced an even earlier log cabin. Old-timer Harry Hawkins noted in his oral history that an elderly African-American man was reported to have lived here originally. When he died, the man was buried -- although not in the local cemetery. Instead, he was interred just north of his cabin, and a rock fence was later built there. Yup, right over the poor fellow’s grave. Which could explain why at least one irrita ted ghost would still occupy this property! Part 2 of this story continues next month! Find Karen Dustman’s local history books and blog at www.Clairitage.com. FRESH BATCH, NEW CROP! Jimmie, an 80-year-old gentleman, retired to Florida after his wife of 58 years had passed away. He was quite alone in the world and longed for companionship again. One day, as he was walking through a public park, he spied what he considered to be a very pretty, silver-haired lady sitting alone on a park bench. Getting his nerve up, he approached the lady and asked graciously, “Pardon me, ma’am, but may I sit here with you?” The silver-haired Marcie looked up to see a distinguished-looking, white-haired gentleman and replied, “Why certainly,” and moved over gently to give him room to sit down. For the next two hours, the two sat and talked about everything. They discovered that they came from the same part of the country, liked the same big band music, voted for the same presidential candidates, had long, happy marriages, had lost their spouses during the previous year, and in general agreed about almost everything. Finally, the old gentleman cleared his throat and asked sheepishly, “Ma’am, may I ask you two questions?” With great interest and anticipation, Marcie replied, “Why certainly!” The old gentleman removed a handkerchief from his coat pocket and spread it out on the ground before her. He very gingerly got down on one knee and looked her softly in the eyes. “Marcie, I know we’ve only known each other for a couple of hours, but we have so much in common. I feel I have known you all my life. Will you marry me and be my wife?” Marcie grabbed at Jimmie’s hands and said, “Why, yes, I will marry you! You have made me so very happy!” She reached over and kissed him gently on the cheek. Then Marcie said, “You said you had two questions to ask me. What is the second question?” Jimmie scratched his neck and said, “Will you help me get up?” PERGOLA KIT, HAMPTON BAY, NEVER USED, paid $500 asking $222; Patio Bar with 4 bar chairs and includes separate Hammock, all good condition, $235 OBO, Marge (775)782-6519 HOME REPAIR PRO, MR. Two of the most common causes of night waking in children are night terrors and nightmares. Parents often get them confused but they are different, as is how they should be managed. Before we can understand night terrors and nightmares, we need to understand normal sleep. All children and adults cycle through stages of deep sleep, also known as non-rapid eye movement (non-REM), and light sleep, also known as REM. We fall immediately into deep sleep where we typically stay for the first few hours of the night. Thereafter, we cycle through deep and light sleep. These sleep cycles last 30-60 minutes in children and around 90 minutes in adults. When we come into light sleep, we can wake up briefly, look around the room, adjust the bedclothes, and if everything is OK, go back to sleep again. Night terrors and nightmares happen in different parts of the sleep cycle and in different parts of the night. Night terrors usually happen before midnight and occur when the child is “stuck” between a deep and light sleep stage. Their body is therefore “awake” but their mind isn’t. In contrast, nightmares tend to occur after midnight and happen during the light sleep stage, when we do most of our dreaming. During a night terror, the child has a sudden onset of screaming, can have their eyes open or shut, can breathe rapidly and have a fast heartbeat. They look terrified and can get up and run around. However, because they are not truly awake, children have no memory of the event in the morning. If their parent tries to comfort them with a hug, the child will typically push the parent away. During nightmares, however, children will usually wake up completely from their bad dream and be scared. They welcome a hug and can remember what happened in the morning. Managing nightmares and night terrors - These differences give us an insight into how best to manage night terrors and nightmares. For night terrors, parents would do best to check their child is OK (hasn’t got their leg stuck in the cot, for example) and then leave them be if it is safe to do so. Many parents continue to try to comfort their child but this usually results in the child waking up completely and being very confused and hard to re-settle. Children who are having a nightmare need to be comforted by their parent and returned to bed once they have calmed down. For almost all children, night terrors and nightmares are a part of normal development and not a cause for concern. Both can run in families.

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Parrot Attitude

A young woman named Jessie received a parrot as a gift many years ago. Over time the parrot developed an extremely bad attitude. It got to the point that every word out of the bird’s mouth was rude and obnoxious. Jessie tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else she could think of to ‘clean up’ the bird’s attitude and by then ‘foul language.’ Finally, Jessie was fed up and yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. Jessie lost it and shook the parrot. The parrot became uncontrollable and even more rude. Jessie, in desperation, threw up her hands, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked, kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that she’d hurt the parrot, Jessie quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto Jessie’s outstretched arms and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior.” Jessie was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude. As she was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spokeup, very softly, “May I ask what the turkey did?” HYDRAULIC CYLINDER REPAIR AND REBUILD, All makes models and year, Commercial Equipment, Tractors, Log splitters, Farm equipment, Dump Trucks and Trailers, Boats and RVs, Welding and Machining, Ramco Fabrication, shawn@ramcofab.com or (775)267-7358 WINCHESTER, MODEL 70 ACTION, 17/223 CALIBER, rechambered to 17 rem mag, left hand thumbhole stock, 3 to 9 power scope, bi-pod and sling, 3 boxes ammunition, hard case and more (775)265-5961 ASPEN ROOFING INC. Helium was up, feathers were down. Paper was stationary. Fluorescent tubing was dimmed in light trading. Knives were up sharply. Cows steered into a bull market. Pencils lost a few points. Hiking equipment was trailing. Elevators rose, while escalators continued their slow decline. Weights were up in heavy trading. Light switches were off. Mining equipment hit rock bottom. Diapers remained unchanged. Shipping lines stayed at an even keel. The market for raisins dried up. Coca Cola fizzled. Caterpillar stock inched up a bit. Sun peaked at midday. Wish granted???

A couple had been married for 35 years, and the pair was also celebrating their 60th birthdays. During the celebration, a fairy godmother appeared and said that because they had been such a loving couple all those years, she would give them each one wish. The wife said she wanted to travel around the world. The fairy godmother waved her magic wand and BOOM! The wife had the tickets in her hand. Then it was the husband’s turn. He paused for a moment, then said boldly, “Well, I’d like to have a wife 30 years younger than I.” The fairy godmother picked up her wand and BOOM! He was now 90. Back in 2012, Smithsonian magazine wrote that the taco first crossed the US border after crawling out of the silver mines of Mexico. In fact, those same miners “likely” invented it, according to the magazine. “Taco” was actually the word miners in the 18th century used to describe the small charges they used to evacuate ore (hence the belief that miners created a dish they called a taco). Fast forward to the 19th century and you’ll find the taco’s first appearance in print. One popular 1800s dictionary described the dishes as tacos de minero (or miner’s tacos) – a clear link to their underground origins. Tacos apparently initially made their home in working class neighborhoods where cash strapped communities used them to feed their families with limited financial resources. But their journey didn’t end there. Soon after their popularity expanded to the U.S. By the late 1800s and early 1900s Mexican migrants made their way north working in mines and on railroads, carrying the taco in tow. It wasn’t long before these tasty stowaways had their first public profile. Sources cite the taco’s first mention in a U.S. newspaper in early 1905. For some time after, the taco continues to be seen as a food for the lower classes, and in some regions it retains its designation as peasant food for several decades. Fortunately, the stigma didn’t last long. As the children and grandchildren of the original Mexican immigrants start to rise economically, “street food” rises in esteem a bit, too. Though it’s a slow start at first, these initial turning tides were an important stepping stone. The swell continued as descendants of Mexican immigrants began using American ingredients in their dishes, such as beef instead of offal, for example. Of course, no history lesson about the Taco’s expansion into the Americas would be complete without a mention of Glen Bell (of Taco Bell fame). Many people incorrectly believe that Glen Bell, founder of Taco Bell, “invented” the u-shaped, crispy taco shell taco we all know and love. In fact, Bell himself believed so, too. But, the article clearly states that references to the u-shape, hard shelled taco had been documented a full 10 years before Bell ever opened his first restaurant. What’s more, according to the Smithsonian, his contribution to the rise of the taco in America was simply to make Mexican food “ok” for non-Mexicans to eat. He also strategically made the tacos in advance of anyone ordering them, thus making the process of feeding many people go much more quickly. (Yep, you guessed it, hence tacos foray into “fast” food). As Taco Bell grew in popularity among Americans of non-Mexican heritage, so did the taco.

Influence the Life of a Child

“When you thought I wasn’t looking... I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one. I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals. I saw you make my favorite cake for me and I learned that little things can be the special things in life. I heard you say a prayer, and I knew there is a God I could always talk to and I learned to trust in God. I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other. I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don’t. I felt you kiss me good night and I felt loved and safe. I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it and I learned we have to take care of what we are given. I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn’t feel good, and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up. I saw tears come from your eyes and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s all right to cry. I saw that you cared and I wanted to be everything I could be. Stereotypes, Prejudice, Racism and Discrimination

The terms stereotype, prejudice, racism and discrimination, are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation. Stereotypes are oversimplified generalizations about groups of people. Stereotypes can be based on race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation—almost any characteristic. They may be positive (usually about one’s own group, such as when women suggest they are less likely to complain about physical pain) but are often negative (usually toward other groups, such as when members of a dominant racial group suggest that a subordinate racial group is stupid or lazy). In either case, the stereotype is a generalization that doesn’t take individual differences into account. Prejudice refers to the beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and attitudes someone holds about a group. A prejudice is not based on experience; instead, it is a prejudgment, originating outside actual experience. Example: defining one category of people as superior (children with blue eyes) results in prejudice against people who are not part of the favored category. While prejudice is not necessarily specific to race, racism is a stronger type of prejudice used to justify the

belief that one racial category is somehow superior or inferior to others; it is also a set of practices used by a racial majority to disadvantage a racial minority. While prejudice refers to biased thinking, discrimination consists of actions against a group of people. Discrimination can be based on age, religion, health, and other indicators; race-based laws against discrimination strive to address this set of social problems. Discrimination based on race or ethnicity can take many forms, from unfair housing practices to biased hiring systems. Overt discrimination has long been part of U.S. history. In the late nineteenth century, it was not uncommon for business owners to hang signs that read, “Help Wanted: No Irish Need Apply.” And southern Jim Crow laws, with their “Whites Only” signs, exemplified overt discrimination that is not tolerated today. Summary: Stereotypes are oversimplified ideas about groups of people. Prejudice refers to thoughts and feelings, while discrimination refers to actions. Racism refers to the belief that one race is inherently superior or inferior to other races. About 2 years ago my friend and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess liner. At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters, busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady. I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises... back to back. As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, “I understand you’ve been on this ship for the last four cruises”. She replied, “Yes, that’s true.” I stated, “I don’t understand” and she replied, without a pause, “It’s cheaper than a nursing home”. So, there will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. I have checked on reservations at Princess and I can get a long-term discount and senior discount price of $135 per day. That leaves $65 a day for... 1. Gratuities, which will only be $10 per day. And the rest can be put into the slot machines. 2. I will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week). 3. Princess has as many as three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night. 4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo. 5. They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips and your casino winnings will have the entire staff scrambling to help you. 6. I will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days. 7. T.V. broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No problem! They will fix everything and apologize for your inconvenience. 8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don’t even have to ask for them. 9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on Medicare; if you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life. Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go? Princess will have a ship ready to go. So don’t look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship. P.S. And don’t forget, when you die, they just dump you over the side... at no charge.

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Being and Breathing

One warm evening many years ago… After spending nearly every waking minute with Angel for eight straight days, I knew that I had to tell her just one thing. So late at night, just before she fell asleep, I whispered it in her ear. She smiled – the kind of smile that makes me smile back –and she said, “When I’m seventy-five and I think about my life and what it was like to be young, I hope that I can remember this very moment.” A few seconds later she closed her eyes and fell asleep. The room was peaceful – almost silent. All I could hear was the soft purr of her breathing. I stayed awake thinking about the time we’d spent together and all the choices in our lives that made this moment possible. And at some point, I realized that it didn’t matter what we’d done or where we’d gone. Nor did the future hold any significance. All that mattered was the serenity of the moment. Just being with her and breathing with her. The moral: We must not allow the clock, the calendar, and external pressures to rule our lives and blind us to the fact that each individual moment of our lives is a beautiful mystery and a miracle – especially those moments we spend in the presence of a loved one.
