Driver’s License Renew

In his late 80s, my father-in-law went to the DMV to renew his driver’s license. At one point during the road test, he approached a four-way stop, looked to his left, and cruised straight through the stop sign. “Sir! You didn’t look to your right,” yelled the frightened inspector. My father-in-law calmly shook his head. “That’s the wife’s side.” SPECIALIZING IN GARAGES, ADDITIONS, REMODELS, decks, patio covers, free estimates, NV#0080432, Redline Construction Inc. I grew up in the 40s/50s with practical parents. A mother, God love her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a Name for it... A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now... Dad, in trousers, tee shirt and a hat, mowing the lawn or checking the oil in the car -- Mom, in a house dress, with a child’s spelling list in one hand and a cooking spoon in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we kept. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, eating leftovers, reusing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there’d always be more. But then my mother died, and on that clear summer’s night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn’t any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away... never to return. So, while we have it... it’s best we love it... and care for it... and fix it when it’s broken... and heal it when it’s sick. This is true for marriage... and old cars... and children with bad report cards... and dogs with bad hips... and aging parents... and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with. There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special... and so, we keep them close! (Author Unknown) PORSCHES WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE! Can Hardly Walk

An old man limped into the doctor’s office and said, “Doctor, my knee hurts so bad, I can hardly walk!” The doctor slowly eyed him from head to toe, paused and then said, “Sir, how old are you?” “I’m 98,” the man announced proudly. The doctor just sighed, and looked at him again. Finally, he said, “Sir, I’m sorry. I mean, just look at you. You are almost one hundred years old, and you’re complaining that your knee hurts? Well, what did you expect?” The old man said, “Well, my other knee is 98 years old too, and it doesn’t hurt!”

Who invented the first Home Security System?

Marie Van Brittan (1922-1999) was born and raised in Jamaica, Queens. She became a nurse, who like most nurses, did not work regular 9-5 hours. Her husband, Albert Brown, was an electronics technician. When she was home alone at odd hours of the day or night, she sometimes felt concerned. The crime rate in their neighborhood had increased, and everyone in the neighborhood knew that police response time in their area was notoriously slow. Marie wanted a way to feel less vulnerable. Working with her husband, Albert, the two began devising a home security system. One issue that bothered Marie was having to answer the door to identify a visitor. Soon they had a plan for a motorized camera that was attached to a cabinet added to the door. The camera could move up and down to take views through four separate peep holes. The top spot would reveal the identity of a tall person; the lowest one would show if a child was at the door. The other peep holes could capture any person between these two heights. A television monitor was placed in the Browns’ bedroom, and Albert used a radio-controlled wireless system to feed the images seen at the door back to the monitor. A two-way microphone also permitted conversation with the person at the door. If the homeowner was concerned about the person at the door, a button could be pushed that would sound an alarm to

6

signal a security firm, a neighborhood watchman, or it could alert a nearby neighbor. If, however, the person was a friend, a button could be pushed that would unlock the door remotely so that the visitor could come in. The patent application was filed on August 1,1966 under the names of Marie Van Brittan Brown and Albert L. Brown, both of 151-58 135th Avenue, Jamaica, New York. The application states that the invention being described is “a video and audio security system for a house under control of the occupant thereof. Occupant can see who is at the door…” An audio system permits the occupant to converse with the person at the door. Three people were visiting and viewing the Grand Canyon -- an artist, a pastor and a cowboy. As they stood on the edge of that massive abyss, each one responded with a cry of exclamation. The artist said, “Ah, what a beautiful scene to paint!” The minister cried, “What a wonderful example of the handiwork of God!” The cowboy mused, “What a terrible place to lose a cow!” PRIMARY WATER RIGHTS FOR SALE, Smith Valley, Call Bob (775)781-0244

Here is a helpful approach for teaching kids to pray. It’s a format that allows children to recall and pray in their own words for five different groups of people. All this lines up with the five fingers of their hand. Hold up your thumb and each of your fingers in turn as you explain who we pray for. Ask the children to hold up their fingers at the same time as you. Thumb: (Praying for people who are close to us) When you hold your hand in front of you point your back at yourself. Think of those who are close to you in your life. These are your close friends and family, often the first you think about when you pray. Give thanks to God and ask his protection on your parents, siblings, friends, and classmates. Pointer Finger: (Praying for those who point the way and lead us) These are leaders in your life, such as teachers, preachers or elders. Those who lead the church or lead in your family. Offer God your thanksgiving for them and ask him to help them in their important work. Tall Finger: (Praying for people in authority) This is our tallest finger. The big people in the world need prayer too. Ask God to give wisdom to our government, military, and police. Ring Finger: (Praying for people who are weak) This is our weakest finger so we do not use it to lift or carry things. People without strength or power need our prayers. We should remember others who are sick, live in poverty, or are treated badly. Pray that Jesus would give them new strength. Little Finger (Lastly, I will pray for myself) We help others and often put their needs before our own but God wants to hear about our needs too. I can pray for my own growth in mind, body, and spirit. LAWN CARE SERVICE! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Jonas Winchester’s Wild, Crazy, Adventurous Life – Part 2

Old Friends

Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, “Now don’t get mad at me.. I know we’ve been friends for a long time but I just can’t think of your name. I’ve thought and thought, but I can’t remember it. Please tell me what your name is.” Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, “How soon do you need to know?” CRAFTSMAN CONSTRUCTION LLC, Specializing in Painting, Remodels, Additions, Tile, Finish Carpentry, Decks, Home Repairs, Window and Door Replacement, Quality Workmanship with over 28 years experience, free estimates, Serving Carson Valley, NV Lic.60315, NVPainting Lic.82727 Find us on Facebook or (775)690-1749 WE’LL KEEP YOU IN STITCHES, WE COVER autos, furniture and ATV’s, 47 years experience, Tweeds Upholstery, Gardnerville, tweedsupholstery@yahoo.com or (775)782-5812 sierrascoop.com

By Karen Dustman So, how did Jonas Winchester wind up in California? Ah, that’s a story in itself! (And if you missed Part 1 of Winchester’s wild and crazy life, check out last month’s issue of the Scoop!) The eighth of 13 children, Jonas Winchester entered the world on November 19, 1810 in Marcellus, New York. At roughly age 16 he was apprenticed to Adolphus Fletcher, printer of a local weekly known as the Jamestown Journal. But by the time he was 18, Winchester was determined to set off for adventure. He made his way to New York City, where he arrived (as he later put it) “a stranger, without friends, acquaintances, or recommendation of any kind.” He was certain a better life awaited him there. “Destiny calls and I must follow,” he wrote to his mother in September, 1829. Despite lack of connections in the City and with only 2-1/2 years under his belt as an apprentice, Winchester managed to land a job as a compositor for two New York City newspapers. But the pay proved meager. Wages for compositors were so low, in fact, that in September, 1830 Winchester was forced to move back home to Western New York. There he took a job with the Fredonia Censor. But the allure of the big city still beckoned. He returned to New York City again in the Spring of 1832. And in 1833, Winchester landed a publishing job with Horace Greeley, perhaps through his friendship with Greeley’s partner, Frank Story. Greeley himself was a relative newcomer, too, having arrived in New York late 1831. By the time Winchester became an associate, Greeley had already launched and lost the shortlived Morning Post – a publication that cratered three short weeks after its January 1, 1833 debut. Just a few months later yet another tragedy struck Greeley — his business partner (and Winchester’s friend), Francis V. Story, drowned suddenly in July 1833. Story’s death presented a fortuitous opening for Winchester: he stepped in to become Greeley’s partner. In March, 1834, Greeley and Winchester launched another new publication called the New Yorker — a “large, fair, and cheap weekly folio” dedicated to literature with a sprinkling of news. Greeley handled the editing, while Winchester did what he did best — promotion of the profitable “jobbing business” (contract printing). Before long, Winchester further solidified his fortunes by marrying Story’s sister, Susan — on Winchester’s own 25th birthday, November 19, 1835. Although launched with just a dozen subscribers, the New Yorker’s circulation eventually hit 9,000. But it never became a rip-roaring success. Instead, it took “a terrible struggle on the part of its proprietors” to keep the publication alive. Greeley and Winchester eventually dissolved their partnership in September, 1836. Winchester tried various other printing activities, but got himself deep into debt (thanks to what one observer called his “careless and venturesome way”). About 1844, he was forced to declare bankruptcy. The timing couldn’t have been worse for a new family

man. By now, Winchester and his wife, Susan, had two children: Frank S. Winchester, born in 1840, and Julia, born in 1844. Eager for a new start, Winchester was thrilled when glittering tales of California gold began circulating in late 1848. It was a chance to redeem his fortunes! News of the gold strike at Sutter’s Mill was all over the newspapers in New York. Reports circulated that some $2 million in gold dust was already sitting in San Francisco, just waiting for transportation to the East. Winchester learned of a three-masted “half-clipper” ship leaving soon for California. She was called the Tarolinta, Indian for “floating rose,” captained by William P. Cave. With a capacity of 549 tons and a crew of 27 (20 of them AfricanAmericans), the Tarolinta was to carry a lucrative load of cargo and roughly a hundred passengers bound for the gold fields. Winchester was determined to be among them. He quickly booked passage. The Tarolinta was scheduled to depart from New York harbor on December 28, 1848. But not enough passengers signed up at first. So the sailing date was postponed until January 9, 1849, in hopes of that additional passengers could be recruited. Then additional freight to be delivered to South America caused the date to be pushed off yet again, to January 13. You can only imagine Jonas Winchester tapping his toes

in frustration. We’ll continue with Part 3 of Winchester’s story next month! Karen Dustman writes frequently about California and Nevada history. Find her books, blog and more stories at www. There was a nice lady, a minister’s widow, who was a little old fashioned. She was planning a week’s vacation in California at Skylake Yosemite campground (Bass Lake, to the uninitiated), but she wanted to make sure of the accommodations first. Uppermost in her mind were bathroom facilities, but she couldn’t bring herself to write “toilet” in a letter. After considerable deliberation, she settled on “bathroom commode,” but when she wrote that down, it still sounded too forward, so, after the first page of her letter, she referred to the bathroom commode as “BC.” “Does the cabin where I will be staying have its own ‘BC’? If not, where is the ‘BC’ located?” is what she actually wrote. The campground owner took the first page of the letter and the lady’s check and gave it to his secretary. He put the remainder of the letter on the desk of the senior member of his staff without noticing that the staffer would have no way of knowing what “BC” meant. Then the owner went off to town to run some errands. The staff member came in after lunch, found the letter, and was baffled by the euphemism, so he showed the letter around to several counselors, but they couldn’t decipher it either. The staff member’s wife, who knew that the lady was the widow of a famous Baptist preacher, was sure that it must be a question about the local Baptist Church. “Of course,” the first staffer exclaimed, “’BC’ stands for ‘Baptist Church.’” And he sat down and wrote: Dear Madam, I regret very much the delay in answering your letter, but I now take the pleasure in informing you that the BC is located nine miles north of the campground and is capable of seating 250 people at one time. I admit it is quite a distance away if you are in the habit of going regularly, but no doubt you will be pleased to know that a great number of people take their lunches along and make a day of it. They usually arrive early and stay late. The last time my wife and I went was six years ago, and it was so crowded we had to stand up the whole time we were there. It may interest you to know that right now there is a supper planned to raise money to buy more seats. They are going to hold it in the basement of the ‘BC.’ I would like to say that it pains me very much not to be able to go more regularly, but it is surely no lack of desire on my part. As we grow older, it seems to be more of an effort, particularly in cold weather. If you decide to come down to our campground, perhaps I could go with you the first time, sit with you, and introduce you to all the folks. Remember, this is a friendly community.” PAINTING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, STAINING, faux and fine finishes, free estimates, Powers Painting, NV#68615, (775)781-5531 or (775)315-5179 JR POWER SPORTS! This guy was climbing a tree when suddenly he slipped. He grabbed at a branch and was hanging in mid air. After an hour, he felt himself getting exhausted and looked up to the heavens and cried out: “God, help me! Please, help me!” All of a sudden, the clouds parted, and a voice boomed out from on high. “Let Go!” said the voice. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Who is the Sandman?

The Sandman visits us while we sleep, bringing dreams and restful nights. But who is this guy sneaking into our bedrooms? The Sandman isn’t just limited to North America and isn’t modern at all. The Sandman is a folkloric character originating from Northern Europe. In traditional mythology, the Sandman sprinkles sand or dust into the eyes of sleepers. This brings dreams and deep sleep. Unfortunately, the Sandman’s origins aren’t clear. As a mythological figure, his past is lost in legend. We do know that Hans Christian Anderson put the Sandman on paper in 1841 and gave him the name of Ole Lukoje. His story, which shares the same name, tells of giving dreams to a young child through magical dust scattered into his eyes. His tale tells of the following: In the evening, while the children are seated at the table or in their little chairs, he comes up the stairs very softly, for he walks in his socks, then he opens the doors without the slightest noise, and throws a small quantity of very fine dust in their eyes, just enough to prevent them from keeping them open, and so they do not see him. Then he creeps behind them, and blows softly upon their necks, till their heads begin to droop. Under each arm he carries an umbrella; one of them, with pictures on the inside, he spreads over the good children, and then they dream the most beautiful stories the whole night. But the other umbrella has no pictures, and this he holds over the naughty children so that they sleep heavily, and wake in the morning without having dreams at all. CAMPING GEAR, 50 FLUSH PORTAPOTTI; 2 folding tables, two burner Coleman stove with large tank hookup; Winchester two mantle propane light, pots, pans, dishes, glasses, toaster, etc. (775)265-5961

Disease Burden of Influenza

WEEKLY LAWN CARE AND AERATION, 16+ years experience, quality service, serving Carson Valley, Carson Valley Lawn Care, Insured (775)230-2546

The burden of influenza disease in the United States can vary widely and is determined by a number of factors including the characteristics of circulating viruses, the timing of the season, how well the vaccine is working to protect against illness, and how many people got vaccinated. While the impact of flu varies, it places a substantial burden on the health of people in the United States each year. CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010. The teacher asks little Johnny if he knows his numbers. “Yes,” he says, “I do. My father taught me.” “Good. What comes after ten?” Little Johnny smiles and says, “Jack.”

Fig Leaf Found

A little boy opened the large old family Bible, and he looked with fascination at the ancient pages as he turned them one by one. He was still in Genesis when something fell out of the Bible. He picked it up and looked at it closely. It was a very large old tree leaf that had been pressed between the pages of the Bible long ago. “Momma, look what I found!” the boy called out. “What do you have there?” his mother asked. With astonishment in his voice, the young boy answered, “I think it’s Adam’s underwear!” “YOUR HOMETOWN JUNK HAULER SINCE 1996!” Junk and Trash, etc., Carson Valley/Carson City, $259 a load plus dump fee, J.R.’s Hauling (775)265-6813 REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER, GE SIDE BY SIDE with water dispenser, 25 cubic feet, 36” wide by 69” high, like new $800 (775)265-5545 COMPLETE LANDSCAPING, RESIDENTIAL and commercial, weekly maintenance, tree trimming, emergency repairs, sprinklers/drip, pavers, patios, retaining walls, Davenport Landscape and Design, NV Lic. #0074827, davenportlandscape.com or (775)265-1491 or (775)721-8439

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Dollar verses Quarters

A young boy enters a barbershop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.” The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves. “What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!” Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. “Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?” The boy licked his cone and replied, “Because the day I take the dollar, the game’s over!” AUTISM, ATTENTION THERAPY, ANXIETY, social and focus issues, for children and adults, certified in Safe and Sound Protocol, Contact Dr. Keast-Devine for information (805)674-2867 SEW-WHAT UPHOLSTERY, CUSTOM work, leather and antiques, 40+ years experience, Carson Valley, Leslie (775)901-2035

The Farmer’s Kids

A farmer has three sons. One day, his oldest boy comes to him and pleads with him that he is graduating from school and would really like to get a car. His father says, “Son, come with me.” He takes him to the barn and points to the farm tractor and says, “That tractor is needed here on the farm and I promise that as soon as it’s paid for, we’ll get you a car.” The boy was not too happy, but he did understand the situation and said, “Okay, Dad.” A week later, his second son (10 years old) approaches him wanting a new two-wheel bicycle. Well, he gets the same excuse... “as soon as that tractor is paid for...” Shortly, a few days later, son no. 3, his youngest, comes bugging him for a tricycle. Again, ‘ol Dad gives him the lecture about the tractor being paid for first. While leaving the barn, the young boy, more than a little disgusted with the whole thing, sees a rooster on the back of one of the hens and promptly goes over and kicks the rooster off the hens back, mumbling to himself the whole time. His dad says, “Son, why on earth would you do something like that? He didn’t do anything to you to deserve that!” The little boy looks Dad right square in the eye and says, “Hey, nobody rides anything around here until that darn tractor is paid for.” April 12th - Happy Easter

What is Passover?

Passover is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the emancipation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. It typically falls in early to mid-April, coinciding with 15th to the 22nd of the Jewish month of Nissan, based on the lunar calendar. How is it celebrated? People who observe Passover will attend a Seder, a dinner where the story of the Exodus from Egypt is recounted. Seder means ‘order’ in Hebrew because the Seder ritual is performed in a specific order. People celebrating Passover may abstain from eating leavened bread and eat Matzo, which is a kind of unleavened bread, instead. The four main events at a Seder are eating matzo, eating bitter herbs, drinking four cups of wine associated with blessings and reading from the Haggadah, or book that tells the Passover story. What is the story of Passover? Judaism teaches that the Jews were living as slaves in Egypt, forced into heavy labor and poor living conditions. God heard their cries and sent Moses to free the people from the Pharaoh’s rule. Moses asked Pharaoh to “Let my people go.” When Pharaoh refused, God unleashed a series of 10 plagues upon Egypt. Moses asked Pharaoh for the Jews’ freedom after each of the plagues. When Pharaoh rejected Moses’ requests, a new plague struck Egypt. After the last plague, the killing of the first born sons of Egyptians, Pharaoh relented

24

and the Jews were set free. The first born sons of Jewish people were spared, or “passed over,” which gives the holiday its namesake. The Jews packed up their belongings, but did not have time to wait for their bread to rise, baking Matzo instead. Pharaoh however changed his mind and sent his army after the Jews. Once they reached the Red Sea, the Jews feared they were trapped. Instead, the Torah teaches that God parted the Red Sea allowing the Jews to walk through to safety, but closed the sea again as Pharaoh’s army tried to follow. CUSTOM CANVAS WORK! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Careers

An older couple had a son, who was still living with them. The parents were a little worried, as the son was still unable to decide about his career path, so they decided to do a small test. They took a ten-dollar bill, a Bible, and a bottle of whiskey, and put them on the front hall table. Then they hid, hoping he would think they weren’t at home. The father told the mother, “If he takes the money, he will be a businessman; if he takes the Bible, he will be a priest; but if he takes the bottle of whiskey, I’m afraid our son will be a drunkard.” So, the parents took their place in the nearby closet and waited nervously, peeping through the keyhole they saw their son arrive home. He saw the note they had left, saying they’d be home later. Then, he took the 10-dollar bill, looked at it against the light, and slid it in his pocket. After that, he took the Bible, flicked through it, and took it also. Finally, he grabbed the bottle, opened it, and took an appreciative whiff to be assured of the quality, then he left for his room carrying all three items. The father slapped his forehead, and said, “Darn! It’s even worse than I ever imagined...” “What do you mean?” his wife inquired. “He’s gonna be a politician.” the father replied. The coldest winter

It was one of the coldests winter and many animals were dying because of the cold. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep each other warm. This was a great way to protect themselves from cold and keep each of them warm; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions. After a while, they decided to distance themselves, but they too began to die due to cold. So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or choose death. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship with their companions in order to receive the warmth of their togetherness. This way they were able to survive.

Happy Easter to all!

Eggs and chicks and bunnies are near. For Easter you see, will soon be here. But what is Easter - and why the Spring season? Gather ‘round and I’ll tell you the reason! Chicks are hatched out of eggs, you see. They represent new life for you and me. For Jesus died and was buried three days, then Easter morning came, He was raised. So when we die, we can live again, Jesus gave new life to all God’s children. Bunnies are part of Easter too. They’re born in the Spring when all is new. The grass, the flowers, and leaves start to grow, putting an end to their sleep in the snow. So, as you gather your treats and have fun, let them remind you of Jesus and all He has done. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Just some things to think about!

You cannot change what you refuse to confront. Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together. Don’t think of cost. Think of value. Sometimes you need to distance yourself to see things clearly. Too many people buy things they don’t need with money they don’t have to impress people they don’t know. No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying. If a person wants to be a part of your life, they will make an obvious effort to do so. Think twice before reserving a space in your heart for people who do not make an effort to stay. Making one person smile can change the world – maybe not the whole world, but their world. Saying someone is ugly doesn’t make you any prettier. The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well. Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it. The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much, and forgetting that you are special too. It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company. As we grow up, we realize it becomes less important to have more friends and more important to have real ones. Trying to be someone else is a waste of the person you are. You will never become who you want to be if you keep blaming everyone else for who you are now. People are more what they hide than what they show. Sometimes people don’t notice the things others do for them until they stop doing them. Don’t listen to what people say, watch what they do. Being alone does not mean you are lonely, and being lonely does not mean you are alone. When you have to start compromising yourself and your morals for the people around you, it’s probably time to change the people around you. You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading your last one.
