For many of us, grammar school was a wonderful experience. Playing with your peers, going crazy at recess, and shooting spit wads were all a part of the jolly grade school life, blending into the fabric of growing up. But what about those kids who were bullied on the playground? How did they manage? If you were different, wore glasses, braces or didn’t look like most of the other students, you were probably harassed. What is bullying? I guess it’s some weird version of Darwin, where those who conform survive. Those who don’t, have to fight for their place in the sun. Back in the ‘60s, bullying was something many had to endure. For those who didn’t fit in with the popular cliques, painful memories punctuated grammar school where incessant teasing took place, with social omission, blatant cruelty, and many forms of exclusion. They say that most bullies have also been bullied by others. I’ve heard many stories about kids who have been tormented by parents, older siblings or other associates who end up taking out their anger and frustration on those around them by bullying. For some, homophobia often manifests itself through bullying. I was very athletic in school, so I was never bullied physically. But many who were not into sports were often the brunt of jokes from their peers. One fifth-grade teacher at my school in the ‘60s was notorious for singling out artistic students with her cruelty. How’s that for building a child’s self-esteem? My sister and I were bullied in a different way. A flock of girls can be very cruel and vindictive when they band together. There’s always the popular ringleader who inspires others to join in with the mockery and frenzy. Perhaps this is why I didn’t have many close female friends in school but preferred the company of guys or other tomboys. My sister Teresa reminded me of episodes where the girls in school would make fun of our hand-me-down clothes. We were embarrassed that our home looked like it was right out of “Angela’s Ashes,” so we rarely had friends over to visit. When we went to camp one summer, it was one of the worst weeks of my life, having to endure the cruelty of several 10-year-olds holed up in a tent. I still remember them whispering and giggling in the corner and then pointing at my sister and me because we dressed as tomboys and came from a broken home. I was so glad when that week ended, so I could go home, get lost in the gully and feel good about myself once again. In my teens, I began to gravitate toward the brainy kids in school, and those who were artists. Although I was always the class clown, I preferred being around other outsiders who made me feel more at ease. I even ran for homecoming queen in high school, knowing it would be a real satire if I were actually elected. To this day, I’m still uncomfortable around a flock of women. I still wonder if they laugh at my outfits, make fun of my tomboy style, or wonder why I don’t wear much make-

up. Thankfully, my sense of humor helped me through some tough times when I was young, but I wonder how others who were bullied endured their pain. I hope they found a healthy way to get through it all. (Mary McGrath) Do you have a bullying story you’d like to share with our readers? You can email us at sierrascoop@charter.net. Favorite Cookies

An elderly man lay dying in his bed. In death’s agony, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies wafting up the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands, he crawled down the stairs. With labored breath, he leaned against the door-frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death’s agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven: there, spread out upon waxed paper on the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man? Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture. His parched lips parted: the wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth, seemingly bringing him back to life. The aged and withered hand trembled on its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife. “Stay out of those,” she said, “they’re for the funeral.” HOME REPAIR PRO, MR. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” What To Do If Your Gas Pedal Sticks?

Although this situation is not common, knowing what to do in the unlikely case of a gas pedal sticking might save your life. Your throttle linkage can get stuck, making your car go even though you’ve taken your foot off the gas pedal. Don’t panic- this will only add to the stress. Try this first – Hook your toe under the pedal and see if you can free it. The floor mat may be caught on the pedal. Do not turn off the ignition if your vehicle has power steering as the steering wheel will lock and you won’t be able to steer the vehicle. 1. Be careful of the vehicles around you, use your mirrors and signals. 2. Shift into neutral and coast. 3. Turn on your emergency lights to warn other drivers. 4. IMMEDIATELY and gently apply your brakes, but keep coasting. 5. Search for a safe place to pull over. 6. Pull off the road cautiously on the pavement. The last resort is turning off the ignition, but you have to make sure that you do not lock the steering wheel. You will lose your power in the brakes and steering. DO NOT try to drive the vehicle, as it will rev the engine to a dangerous level. Knowing what to do in a potential emergency is what can save your life and others on the road.

Wife verses Husband

A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, “Relatives of yours?” “Yep,” the wife replied, “in-laws” A BAD TILE JOB CAN BE LIKE A BAD HAIRCUT, but it doesn’t grow back, so don’t get hacked! One-night Jack Evans, along with his 3 university friends went out drinking till late night, as many college students are prone to do, and didn’t study for their test, which, of course, was scheduled for the next day. In the morning they thought of a plan. They made themselves look as dirty and weird as they could with grease and dirt. They went up to the dean and explained that they had gone out to a wedding last night and on their return the tire of their car burst. They continued to explain how they had to push the car all the way back and that they were in no condition to appear for the test. The dean, being a compassionate human being said that they could take the test after 3 days. The students graciously replied that they’d be ready by that time. On the third day, they appeared before the dean. The dean explained that since this was a special test all four were required to sit in separate classrooms for the duration of the exam. They all agreed as they had prepared well in the last three days. The test consisted of 5 questions with total of 100 points: Mid Semester Coursework Examination: Instructions: All questions are required. Any inconsistencies on any of the questions among the four students will result in all the candidates getting a zero mark. Q.1. Write down your name. - (2 points) Q.2. Write the name of the bride and groom at the wedding you attended. (30 points) Q.3. What type of a car were you driving? - (20 points) Q.4. Which tire burst? - (28 points) Q.5. True Crime 1895: The Sarman Murder

By Karen Dustman, Woodfords, CA The murder of 57-year-old Anna Sarman rocked Carson Valley in 1895. Anna and her husband, Fredrick, were living on the old Ferris Ranch about four miles south of Genoa, Nevada. Like so many local ranchers, the Sarmans originally hailed from Germany; they’d arrived in the Valley in 1882 and had lived peaceably there for a dozen years before that tragic spring day. Their extended family included two married daughters and a son: Mrs. Louisa M. Heitman; Mrs. Henry Frevert; and Fred Sarman. But May 8, 1895 would prove to be Anna’s last day of life. Someone entered her home and struck Anna brutally in the head with a hatchet. Investigators later reviewing the crime scene concluded Anna had been murdered in the front room of the house; her body had been carried to a bed in an adjacent bedroom; and the bed was then set on fire. The hatchet that killed poor Anna was found in a nearby woodshed, “covered with blood.” Nearby ranchers claimed to have spotted a transient named Jim Williams about 3 p.m. on the day of the murder, “hurrying through the valley . . . and looking back at short intervals as if expecting pursuit.” Williams was promptly arrested and actually admitted taking a meal at Mrs. Sarman’s house earlier that morning — but adamantly denied killing her. Local sentiment initially ran high; there was even talk of lynching. But when the preliminary hearing was held, “nearly all the testimony went to show that Williams could not have committed the murder,” according to the paper, and he was released. A second transient, Joseph Richie, was arrested at Bodie about two weeks later. He, too, candidly admitted passing through Carson Valley on the day before the murder. Suspiciously, he was said to wear a “narrow-toed shoe which corresponded well” to footprints found near the Sarman home. But charges against him, too, eventually were dropped. The local rumor mill kept churning, however, and communty suspicion eventually began to turn toward Anna’s husband. Fritz Sarman claimed to have been out working in his fields at the time of the murder, returning home about 3

14

p.m. — “in the nick of time to save his property,” but not to save Anna or to catch any glimpse of the murderer. Fritz said there were witnesses to his whereabouts during those crucial afternoon hours, but none of the witnesses he named could be found. A few townsfolk reported that Fritz had “acted strangely” after discovering Anna’s body, going about his usual chores and even calmly milking his cows. Friends, however, expressed themselves “very confident” that Fritz was innocent. Anna was laid to rest in the Genoa Cemetery, and sympathetic townsfolk turned out in huge numbers for her funeral: a reporter counted sixty wagons and buggies at the somber affair. Husband Fritz, however, did not attend; he was said to be “completely prostrated” by his wife’s tragic death. Fritz Sarman passed away on May 12, 1900, almost exactly five years to the day after Anna died. He, too, was buried at Genoa, beside his wife. Whispers persist to this day, but the mystery of Anna’s murder was never officially solved. Karen Dustman is an author and local historian. You can find her online at www.clairitage.com. A dear old lady was staying in a hotel in a small country town and could not get to sleep because of the noise emanating from a party on the ground floor. At first, she bore it stoically. But at about 2am, when the screams and screeches were louder than ever, she phoned the front desk to ask what was going on. “Oh, they’re holding a Policemen’s Ball” replied the clerk. “Well,” said the old lady, “isn’t it about time they let go?” 1993 17’ SPECTRUM ALUMINUM HULL BASS BOAT with trailer and boat cover, 1995 115HP Mercury two stroke outboard and 2013 9.9HP four stroke kicker motor, all new tires, excellent condition $6,000, Carson City (925)766-4484 G & J LANDSCAPING MAINTENANCE, TRIM, prune, fertilize, aerate, sprinklers, General clean-up, Free Estimates, Victor (775)291-1672 JOB HUNTING? Girls Night Out...

The other night, I was invited out for a night with “the girls.” I told my husband that I would be home by midnight. “I promise,” were my last words. The hours passed and the margaritas went down way too easily and around 3 am we piled into a cab and headed to our respective homes, quite inebriated. Just as I walked through the door, the cuckoo clock in the hall started up and cuckooed 3 times! Realizing that my husband would probably wake up to this, I quickly cuckooed another 9 times. I was quite pleased with myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution to cover up my tardiness. Even with my impaired judgment, I could count 3 cuckoos plus 9 cuckoos equaled 12 cuckoos! The next morning, my husband asked me what time I got in, and confidently, I replied, “Midnight...like I promised.” He didn’t even raise and eyebrow and went on reading the morning paper! Phew! Got away with that one! After a moment, he then replied, “I think we might need a new cuckoo clock.” A bit nervously, I asked him why, to which he responded: “Well, last night our clock cuckooed 3 times, then said, ‘Oh, crud,’ cuckooed 4 more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another 3 times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, then tripped over the coffee table and farted.”

Living with Depression

I want to tell you about depression which is a kind of disorder that side by side kills you internally, all emotional and physical activities get disturbed by it. I have seen people suffering from depression due to loss of loved ones, genetics as depression can run in families, mental sickness, by usage of drugs, or it also takes place when one starts a job, or getting married, etc., may be due to stress. So here is my little effort for people who are suffering from this severe problem. Depression typically encompasses sleep problems either makes you sleep little or more. It effects brain and stress patterns as well. The basic therapy for depression are antidepressant which increase the levels of brain chemicals, causes efficiency. Medical treatment or usage of anti-depressants can antidote depression. One who is in a dire need or want quick recovery should go for it otherwise natural remedies can do best to overcome depression without having any side effects. First you have to realize the reason behind depression. What’s making you sad? What are reasons behind your failures? Some of the natural factors that reduce depression includes the quality of food, body movements etc. Abstain from processed food, fast food and commercial baked goods which cause depression. Research has concluded that more unhealthy fats one consumes, the higher the risk of depression. Studies have shown that replacing vegetable oils with olive oil declines the risk of depression by almost 50 percent. Coconut oil is also good in this regard, which feeds the brain. Secondly, exercise is the best thing for uplifting moods. It regulates circulation to supply more oxygen, glucose, and nutrients to brain. Regular physical exercise can do better than SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors), drugs used for the treatment of depression. Outdoor exercise can do far better than indoor exercise, it increases liveliness, interest and interaction with the surroundings. It can also lower stiffness, sadness and lethargy. Under favorable circumstances it can replenish our vitamin D storage which have the ability to lift our moods. Sun in this regard is more beneficial. Meditation is one of the best ways to settle depression. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University concluded that meditation is beneficial for mental disorders of all kinds. According to the studies, people who are depressed express nearly 50 percent less gratitude than the normal ones. Gratitude is riddled by emotions such as greed, frustration, resentment, and regret which are the characteristics of depression so in order to feel stress-free and comfortable pay thanks every day for all the blessings you have. Take care of your health and physical appearance. Talk about what you need and what you don’t. Instead of keeping dual personalities be real and simple. Try to think, perceive, and act positive. Don’t let negative thoughts, feelings of uselessness and loneliness, and fears govern you! Fool in Love

After a quarrel, a wife said to her husband, “You know, I was a fool when I married you.” The husband replied, “Yes, dear, but I was in love and didn’t notice it.” RENNER’S TRUE VALUE HARDWARE - FOR ALL YOUR hardware, household, automotive and gardening needs and much more now available online at truevalue. com, ship orders to store for free, call Robert or Megan for details (775)465-2217, press 1 for parts, 2289 Hwy. 208, Smith, NV

It’s no surprise that everyone’s bodies are shaped differently. You know you’re unique based on your fingerprint, but have you ever thought about how different your earlobe is? Turns out, no one has the same exact earlobes as the next person. Kind of shocking, right? However, there are two different types that we can all identify with: attached and unattached earlobes. If you’ve never done it, feel the bottom of your earlobe - is it connected to the side of your head or not? Here’s what studies have found regarding unattached earlobes or attached earlobes: A) Independent and Generous - If your earlobes are unattached, you are a free spirit - which means you yourself are a bit unattached and don’t pay attention to what society expects of you. Free spirits let life take them wherever they’re destined to be because they know that they’ll be happy wherever they end up. And of course, happiness is key at the end of the day. While you’re independent, you still have close relationships with others and think about how much you care about them. Those with unattached earlobes are devoted to the people and things that matter most, though, which is so important. You can certainly experience life to the beat of your own drum, but you’re by no means greedy in the way you treat friends and family. You’re always thinking about others and are extremely giving if you’re someone who has unattached earlobes. You can actually sometimes forget to put yourself first, but when you do, it always turns out for the better. B) Secure and Motivated - If your earlobes are attached, you are self-aware. You’re understanding of your actions and how they may affect those around you. At times, you may be a little too self-aware. That’s not a bad thing, though. Being self-aware means that you’re sure of yourself and pay attention to the things that are going on around you - especially in your close circle of family and friends. You’re confident in your decision making and are always looking toward the future. However, there is a slight red flag if you do have attached earlobes. You may have the tendency to think you’re always right, but either way, you’re able to quickly move past it when you’re in the wrong. Try to listen to the opinions of others more often and think about how their views differ from you own. Although you always have it together, talking to someone who’s a bit more unattached and free-spirited (say, someone with unattached earlobes) could really turn things around for you. C.F.I. Did Noah Go Fishing?

A Sunday school teacher was teaching her young students about Noah and the ark. She asked them what they thought Noah may have done to pass the time in the ark for forty years. After waiting a few moments, the teacher suggested, “Maybe he did a lot of fishing. How about that?” One little boy gave her a funny look and said, “I don’t think so. It’s kinda hard to fish with just two worms!” HANDYMAN SERVICE – HOME REPAIRS, FENCING Repair/Replacement, Hauling, Trash Removal, Shrub and Tree Trimming and Removal, and Weed Removal, Free Estimates (775)781-1747

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Do You Know Me?

A small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand in a trial - a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” She responded, “Why, yes, I do know you Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since you were a young boy. And frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you’re a rising big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.” The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do he pointed across the room and asked, “Mrs. Williams, do you know the defense attorney?” She again replied, “Why, yes I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. I used to baby-sit him for his parents. And he, too, has been a real disappointment to me. He’s lazy, bigoted, he has a drinking problem. The man can’t build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the shoddiest in the entire state. Yes, I know him.” At this point the judge rapped the courtroom to silence and called both counselors to the bench. In a very quiet voice, he said with menace, “If either of you asks her if she knows me, you’ll be in jail for contempt within 5 minutes!” NUVO WATER SOFTENER, PAID $1,099 MAKE OFFER (775)315-0303

Losing Patience

My husband grew increasingly displeased as our teenage daughter and her boyfriend studied in her room late one evening. Finally losing patience shortly after midnight, he knocked sharply on her door. Her boyfriend immediately opened it and asked if something was wrong. “I have to ask you to move your car,” my husband told him. “Oh, sure. Is it in someone’s way?” “No,” he replied, “it’s parked in the wrong driveway.” CUSTOM MASONRY, ONE BRICK AT A TIME, Commercial/Residential, 3+ Better Business Bureau rating, serving Carson Valley 12+ years, Free Estimates, M Sqrd Masonry, NV#200616647 and CA#924187, Marc Duryee (775)450-6219 or (775)783-4753 REDLINE CONSTRUCTION, INC., SPECIALIZING in garages, additions, remodels, decks, patio covers, free estimates, NV#0080432, (775)781-3955

Of all the animals listed here, the Monarch butterflies total migration is the shortest, at just a few thousand miles at most. But what they lack in overall distance, they more than make up by how they do it. See, the thing is, monarch butterflies only live for a couple of months. Their migration can take six months. This means that it takes two to three generations of butterflies for each migration! Somehow the knowledge of how to travel thousands of miles is embedded in their DNA and is finely attuned to allow them to pick up the path, no matter where they are born along it. Humpback whales are one of the largest animals in the world and can grow longer than 50 feet in length. Humpback whales were nearly driven to extinction by whaling, but a 1966 moratorium on hunting the species has helped their numbers recover. They are solitary animals and spend their summers eating in cold polar waters. In the winter, they migrate towards the equator to find a mate and breed. In all, your typical humpback whale can put in more than 6,000 miles of travel in a year. Gray whales are another huge denizen of the deep and can grow to be nearly as large as the humpback. They too have proven to be attractive targets for whaling harpoons and their estimated population is just north of 20,000. Gray whales are recognized as having one of the longest migration routes for a mammal and can travel 10,000-12,000 miles in a year, spending the summer feeding in the waters between Alaska and Russia and mating and calving down around the Baja peninsula. Birds are another type of animal well known for long migrations. Like whales, they live in a medium, the open sky, made for migrating. Birds take advantage of this by churning in some big miles. The Arctic tern, one of the longest migrators on the planet, can travel a mind boggling 44,000 miles in a year (Earth is just under 25,000 miles around). They do this by making a trip from their summer breeding grounds in the Arctic all the way to the Antarctic to winter, and back, every year. Multiply that by the roughly 30 years an average tern lives, and you can get more than 1 million miles in a lifetime. Too bad they don’t get frequent flyer miles for that. The globe skimmer dragonfly is well named. One of the most widely distributed dragonfly in the world, they have been observed making journeys more than 2,300 miles and scientists think they could put in more than 11,000 miles of travel in a year. Not bad for an insect just a couple of inches in length. The way alcohol is marketed they make it seem that as long as you are not sleeping on a cardboard box on a rainy sidewalk, you don’t have a problem, but drinking, at least like the way I did, had so many consequences it is truly astounding to see, now that I have space from my drinking days. I got sober 416 days ago and my life has completely turned around in so many ways it is kind of crazy. I will just list a few things that have changed since I stopped drinking: I used to drink because I was ‘bored’ with life/the world. I would wake every morning with a hangover and say “crud I gotta do this again...” Now I get up every morning clear headed, full of energy and when I lay down at night I say “crud I wish I had more time in the day to do everything I want to do”... I lost 58 pounds. I went through 3 months of credit card bills and saw I spent on average $37 a day on alcohol 7 days a week. I have been sober 416 days so that is $15,392 not spent on alcohol. I used to think I was a high-functioning alcoholic, because I kept a job. Well since I quit drinking I got a 26% raise at work (my manager said, ‘I don’t know what you did but you are kicking ass’), plus because I am not hung over I am more productive at work, and my job has an incentive program where I get paid more for being more productive. This means I have increased my yearly income by about $25,000$30,000. I used to start my nights drinking at fancy restaurants because I would sit there at the bar and drink $12 glasses of wine, and look at all the fancy people and say “I don’t have a problem because look at how sophisticated I am, I am not drinking malt liquor from a bottle at the park.” Now I prepare dinner every night for my wife and baby and no longer partake in the delusion that you can’t have a drinking problem if you have money. I fixed my relationship with my family, and am now speaking to everyone, whereas I had not spoken to my brother for 2.5 years because I said stupid idiot to him, and other family members when I was drunk. I have found a profound sense of peace that I have not experienced since I was a child. Literally everything in my life is better since I stopped drinking. Good Friday is the day on which Catholics commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Catholics are joined by almost all other Christians in solemn commemoration on this day. It is also a legal holiday around much of the world. According to the gospels, Jesus was betrayed by Judas on the night of the Last Supper, commemorated on Holy Thursday. The morning following Christ’s arrest, he was brought before Annas, a powerful Jewish cleric. Annas condemned Jesus for blasphemy for refusing to repudiate Annas’ words that He was the Son of God. From there, Jesus was sent to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of the province. Pontius Pilate questioned Jesus but found no reason to condemn Him. Instead, he suggested Jewish leaders deal with Jesus according to their own law. But under Roman law, they could not execute Jesus, so they appealed to Pilate to issue the order to kill Jesus. Pilate appealed to King Herod, who found no guilt in Jesus and sent Him back to Pilate once again. Pilate declared Jesus to be innocent, and washed his hands to show that he wanted nothing to do with Jesus, but the crowds were enraged. To prevent a riot and to protect his station, Pilate reluctantly agreed to execute Jesus and sentenced him to crucifixion. Jesus was convicted of proclaiming himself to be the King of the Jews. Before his execution, Jesus was flogged, which was a customary practice intended to weaken a victim before crucifixion. Crucifixion was an especially painful method of execution and was perfected by the Romans as such. It was reserved for the worst criminals, and generally Roman citizens, women, and soldiers were exempt in most cases. During his flogging, the soldiers tormented Jesus, crowning Him with thorns and ridicule. Following his flogging, Jesus was compelled to carry his cross to the place of His execution, at Calvary. During his walk to the site of His execution, Jesus fell three times and the Roman guards randomly selected Simon, a Cyrene, to help Jesus. After arrival at Calvary, Jesus was nailed to the cross and crucified between two thieves. One of the thieves repented of his sins and accepted Christ while on the cross beside Him. A titulus, or sign, was posted above Christ to indicate His supposed crime. The titulus read, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” It is commonly abbreviated in Latin as “INRI” (Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum). During Christ’s last few hours on the cross, darkness fell over the whole land. Jesus was given a sponge with sour wine mixed with gall, a weak, bitter painkiller often given to crucified victims. Prior to death, Jesus spoke His last words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This line is the opening of Psalm 22, and it may have been common practice to recite lines of songs to deliver a greater message. Properly understood, the last words of Christ were triumphant. Guards then lanced Jesus’ side to ensure He was dead. At the moment of Christ’s death, an earthquake occurred, powerful enough to open tombs. The long, thick curtain at the

Temple was said to have torn from top to bottom. Following the incredible events of the day, the body of Christ was removed from the cross and laid in a donated tomb, buried according to custom. The events of Good Friday are commemorated in the Stations of the Cross, a 14-step devotion often performed by Catholics during Lent and especially on Good Friday. The Stations of the Cross are commonly recited on Wednesdays and Fridays during Lent. Another devotional, the Acts of Reparation, may also be prayed. Good Friday is a day of fasting within the Church. Traditionally, there is no Mass and no celebration of the Eucharist on Good Friday. A liturgy may still be performed and communion, if taken, comes from hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday. Baptism, penance, and anointing of the sick may be performed, but only in unusual circumstances. Church bells are silent. Altars are left bare. Drives five miles into wilderness, still thinks he’s right. Drives an extra 5 miles just in case. Finally rolls down window just to get fresh air. Pulls up to a 7-11. Gets three hot-dogs, a large Slurpee, and beef jerky. Asks person behind counter how to get back onto the highway. Gets back into car. Laughs at the idea of looking at a map as he pulls away from the 7-11. Drives down a dirt road with no street lights insisting this is the way back because guy from 7-11 said it was. Almost hits a deer. Curses the night. Curses wife. Curses the large Slurpee. Drives and fiddles with radio. Yells at wife for suggesting the map again. Admits he didn’t want to go to Easter at your sister’s anyway. He hates your sister. Ever since she called him a pernicious weasel. He had to look up pernicious. Couldn’t find a dictionary. Finally found a dictionary Couldn’t spell pernicious. Seethes at the memory of it all. But, she is laughing inside... And of course, you’re still lost. Icing ...

A young man was visiting his brother and sister-in-law for the holidays. As he arrived at their house he found his young nephew, Timmy, helping them bake some cupcakes. After they were done, his sister-in-law allowed Timmy to put the icing on. When the boy had finished, he brought them to the table. “The cupcakes look delicious, Tim.” his uncle said. He took a bite and said, “Timmy these are so good.” As he finished cupcake and took another, he again complimented his little nephew. “The cupcakes look beautiful, Tim,” his uncle said. “How did you get the icing so neat?” His nephew replied, “It was easy. I just licked them.” The uncle turned pale. He pointed to the plate of cupcakes. “You licked all of these?” Timmy replied, “Well no. After a while my tongue got tired, and I got the dog to help.” “YOUR HOMETOWN HAULER SINCE 1996!” J.R.’s Hauling, Junk and Trash, Carson Valley/Carson City, $139 a load plus dump fee, (775)265-6813 1988 SUZUKI SAMURAI, VERY GOOD CONDITION, hard top, always garaged, custom front bumper and set up to be towed, have all maintenance records $5,700 (775)465-2359

Up to Heaven

One day, a father and son were walking along the beach when they came across a dead seagull lying on its back. Curiously, the son asked, “Daddy, what’s wrong with the bird?” “There comes a time in your life when you die,” said the father. “Where do you go when you die?” said the son. “Up to heaven,” said the father. “What happens in heaven?” said the son. “God invites you into his kingdom,” said the father. “Then, why did God throw this one back?” said the son. I was preparing to shave my fifty-year old face this morning when I noticed something: my wrinkles no longer disappear when I relax my face. They have become permanent etchings in my skin. I know too that the television and internet are full of advertisements for creams, treatments, and Botox to ease and lessen these permanent wrinkles but as I looked at mine in the mirror I decided that it would be far better just to let them be. They are, after all, the evidence of the life I have lived. When I looked at them more closely I could see the lines on the bridge of my nose and between my eyebrows that have been cut from a lifetime of dealing with back pain. There are also some pretty deep ones above my eyebrows that have come from all of the times I have been stressed, angry or frustrated. On my forehead are even deeper ones that have come from all of those moments when my eyes opened wide in astonishment, fascination, or learning. The thickest and deepest ones of all, though, seemed to be the curving lines around my eyes. They are the evidence of my every laugh and my every smile. I noticed too that the happier my smile the more their cousins in my cheeks appeared as well. All in all, then I wouldn’t erase the evidence of this life I have lived here. It has been a good life. It has had its pains and sorrows but also its loves and joys. It isn’t over yet either. I can’t wait to see just how deep my wrinkles will one day become. The evidence of our lives doesn’t just lie in our faces either. It also lives in every heart we touch, every person we help, and every life we make better. It lives in the love and joy that we bring to this world. It lives in the light that we carry around in our souls. May the evidence of your own life always bring a smile to your face and to God’s as well.
