The Chicken is Crossin’ the Road Again

DONALD TRUMP: We will build a big wall to keep the chickens from crossing the road, and we will make the chickens pay for it. JOHN KERRY: We will trust the chicken to tell us whether it crossed the road or not. CHRIS CHRISTIE: We need to water board that chicken to find out why it crossed the road. RAND PAUL: It’s none of our business why the chicken crossed the road. NANCY PELOSI: We will have to wait until the chicken crosses the road to see what it says. CARLY FIORINA: Hillary Clinton lied about why the chicken crossed the road. BRIAN WILLIAMS: I crossed the road with the chicken. BEN CARSON: This isn’t brain surgery. BERNIE SANDERS: That rich Chicken has been crossing that road for years and needs to pay a toll. JEB BUSH: I’ll get Mom to help the chicken cross the road. MARCO RUBIO: The Chicken is only crossing the road because Obama wants him to. Really, Obama wants him to. Obama wants him to. JOHN KASICH: The Chicken crosses the road because his father was a Mailman just like mine. Did you know my father was a Mailman? SARAH PALIN: Because, gosh-darn it, he’s a maverick! HILLARY CLINTON: What difference, at this point, does it make why the chicken crossed the road? GEORGE W. BUSH: We don’t really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or against us. BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken. DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won’t realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. OPRAH: Well, I

4

understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross the road so badly. I’m going to give this chicken a NEW CAR so he can just drive across the road. ANDERSON COOPER: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road. ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken? COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one? AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? AL GORE: I invented the chicken. BARACK OBAMA: Let me be perfectly clear, if the chickens like their eggs, they can keep their eggs. Besides, he didn’t lay the Egg by himself. A minister dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who’s dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket, and jeans. Saint Peter addresses this guy, “Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?” The guy replies, “I’m Joe Cohen, taxi-driver, of Noo Yawk City.” Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the taxidriver, “Take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” The taxi-driver goes into Heaven with his robe and staff, and it’s the minister’s turn. He stands erect and booms out, “I am Joseph Snow, pastor of Saint Mary’s for the last forty-three years.” Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the minister, “Take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” “Just a minute,” says the minister. “That man was a taxi-driver and he gets a silken robe and golden staff. How can this be?” “Up here, we work by results,” says Saint Peter. “While you preached, people slept; while he drove, people prayed.” ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS? MAKE THEM GO away! No job too small! It Only Went Click

A woman was called in front of a Texas grand jury for possible manslaughter charges after she shot a mugger 6 times in the back as he was running away with her purse. She had her hand on her gun when he grabbed the purse, and she was left with the revolver in her hand. When asked by the grand jury why she shot the man 6 times in the back as he was running away she replied under oath: “Because when I pulled the trigger the 7th time it only went click.” She was acquitted of all charges......That’s the way it is in Texas! Price of a US Stamp is Set to Fall in April

For the first time since Woodrow Wilson was president, the price of a US postage stamp is set to decrease in April. According to the US Postal Service, the price of a US-bound first class stamp will decrease 2 cents - to 47 from 49 cents -starting April 10. Stamp prices last declined in 1919 when the price of a first class stamp fell to 2 cents from 3 cents. This expected decrease stems from an act of Congress passed in 2013 that allowed the USPS to add a 4.3% surcharge in order to stem the massive losses for the Service because of the Great Recession. In a release from the USPS, the group said the act expires when the surcharges had accounted for $4.6 billion in revenue, which will happen April 10th. At that time, stamps will revert back to their inflation-pegged pricing, dropping the price to 47 cents for a first class stamp and sticking the USPS with an additional $2 billion in annual losses.

I first met Mary Emma DeRemer more than 30 years ago, when she was the librarian at the Dimmick Memorial Library here in Jim Thorpe. In those pre-digital days, finding a book was like embarking on a safari. Mary Emma didn’t always use the Dewey Decimal System. She had what I called the DeRemer Decimal System, largely in her head. Many of the file cards in the drawers bore cryptic penciled notes that inevitably directed you to her desk. Behind her were shelves stacked with leather-bound ledgers that she would have to consult before your book could be found. I now realize this convoluted setup gave her a chance to chat with the patrons. One afternoon I was looking for the Robert W. Service poem “The Shooting of Dan McGrew,” the old Yukon ¬classic that begins: “A bunch of the boys were whooping it up in the Malamute saloon….” The card catalog led me, of course, to Mary Emma, who seemed genuinely excited to track down this chestnut. After making small talk, she launched with gritty determination on her odyssey through the ledgers. “Oh, Mr. Moran,” she sighed at last. “I’m afraid we lost that book in the fire of 1979.” “I’m sorry,” I replied. “Well, thanks for looking.” As I was about to leave, she called out. “Mr. Moran, I just remembered: Mrs. Thiel borrowed that book about 10 years ago. She told me she liked that poem so much that she memorized it. Why don’t I call her and have her recite it?” I was dumbfounded and had to stop myself from saying, “Oh, don’t bother,” because I really wanted to savor this small-town moment. Besides, I had no choice. Mary Emma was already dialing the number, which she knew by heart. I can still see her using one of those old phone dialer pencils with a metal knob instead of an eraser. “Oh, hello? Mrs. Thiel? This is Mary Emma DeRemer of the Dimmick Memorial Library,” she announced grandly. I wondered what other library Mrs. Thiel might have been patronizing to deserve such a precise clarification. “Do you remember the time you borrowed the book with ‘The Shooting of Dan McGrew’ in it?” Mary Emma listened, then frowned. “Oh, I know, Mrs. Thiel. You returned it on time. I’m not calling about that. But we have a gentleman here who is interested in the poem. Would you be so kind as to recite it for him?” Mary Emma paused for the answer and then frowned again. “Well, those things happen.” She covered the receiver and whispered to me, “She forgot it.” The next day I stopped by again, and Mary Emma was squealing with delight. “Good news, Mr. Moran! Mrs. Thiel remembered that she’d copied the poem into her recipe book. She sent her son down to Allentown”— 50 miles round trip—“to get it for you.” The following morning, I had a crisp photocopy waiting for me. That’s how things were done before the Internet gave us instant access to everything. Mary Emma’s personal search engine was clunkier, but you gained something in the process: oldfashioned neighborliness, timeless country values, and a story to tell the grandchildren. By Edward Moran, Pennsylvania

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” The Story of Adam & Eve’s Pets

Type of Cooking a “Real” Man Will Do

It’s the only type of cooking a “real” man will do. When a man volunteers to do the ‘BBQ’ the following chain of events are put into motion: 1) The woman goes to the store. 2) The woman fixes the salad, vegetables, and dessert. 3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils, and takes it to the man, who is lounging beside the grill, beer in hand. 4) The man places the meat on the grill. 5) The woman goes inside to set the table and check the vegetables. 6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. 7) The man takes the meat off the grill and hands it to the woman. 8) The woman prepares the plates and brings them to the table. 9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. 10) Everyone praises man and thanks him for his cooking efforts. 11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed “her night off.” And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women. Adam and Eve said, ‘Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us.’ And God said, I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves.’ And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it was a good animal and God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, ‘Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal.’ And God said, ‘I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.’ And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them. And they were comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail. After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, ‘Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well.’ And God said, I will create for them a companion who will be with them and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration.’ And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve. And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat’s eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings. And Adam and Eve learned humility. And they greatly improved. And God was pleased. And dog was Happy. And cat..... didn’t give a poop one way or other. Trip to Rome

Visit us at www.SierraScoop.com

A man was getting a haircut prior to a trip to Rome. He mentioned the trip to the barber who responded, “Rome? Why would anyone want to go there? It’s crowded, dirty and full of Italians. You’re crazy to go to Rome. So, how are you getting there?” “We’re taking Delta,” was the reply. “We got a great rate!” “Delta?” exclaimed the barber. “That’s a terrible airline. Their planes are old, their flight attendants are rude, and they’re always late. So, where are you staying in Rome?” “We’ll be at the downtown International Marriott.” “That dump! That’s the worst hotel in the city. The rooms are small, the service is surly and they’re overpriced. So, whatcha doing when you get there?” “We’re going to go to see the Vatican and we hope to see the Pope.” “That’s rich,” laughed the barber. “You and a million other people trying to see him. He’ll look the size of an ant. Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You’re going to need it.” A month later, the man again came in for his regular haircut. The barber asked him about his trip to Rome. “It was wonderful,” explained the man, “not only were we on time in one of Delta’s brand new planes, but it was overbooked and they bumped us up to first class. The food and wine were wonderful, and I had a beautiful 28 year old stewardess who waited on me hand and foot. And the hotel - it was great! They’d just finished a $25 million remodeling job and now it’s the finest hotel in the city. They, too, were overbooked, so they apologized and gave us the presidential suite at no extra charge!” “Well,” muttered the barber, “I know you didn’t get to see the Pope.” “Actually, we were quite lucky, for as we toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped me on the shoulder and explained that the Pope likes to personally meet some of the visitors, and if I’d be so kind as to step into his private room and wait, the pope would personally greet me. Sure enough, five minutes later the Pope walked through the door and shook my hand! I knelt down and he spoke to me.” “Really?” asked the Barber. “What’d he say?” “He said, ‘Where’d you get that lousy haircut?’” CLEAN OUT YOUR GARAGE/BARN GET CASH! Porsches wanted dead or alive! “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Wonderful News!

4 Brain Teasers

1. A wealthy man named Richard Ellis had been counting his money. When he finished, he accidentally left a $100.00 bill on his desk. But when he returned for it a short while later, it was gone. Only two other persons could have seen the bill. One was the maid; the other was the butler. The maid told him that she had hidden it for safekeeping under a green book that was on the desk. But when they looked the bill was not there. The butler said he had found the bill where the maid had left it. He had placed it inside the book, where he thought there was less chance that somebody would find it. He had written down the page numbers so that he would not forget them. The bill was between pages 35 and 36, he said. But when they looked, there was no money in the book. After Mr. Ellis had talked to the maid and the butler, he called the police. He was sure he knew who had taken the money. Who was it, and how did he know? 2. I dig out tiny caves, and store gold and silver in them. I also build bridges of silver and make crowns of gold. They are the smallest you could imagine. Sooner or later everybody needs my help, yet many people are afraid to let me help them. Who am I? 3. I have seven letters. The first two stand for a boy. The first three stand for a girl. The first four stand for a brave boy. But all of my letters stand for a brave girl. What word am I? 4. A beggar’s brother died, but the man who died had no brother. I’d like to find out if a patient is getting better, doing as expected or getting worse.” The voice on the other end said, “What is the patient’s name and room number?” “Sarah Finkel, room 302.” “I’ll connect you with the nursing station . . . .” “3-A Nursing Station. How can I help you?” “I’d like to know the condition of Sarah Finkel in room 302.” “Just a moment. Let me look at her records. Mrs. Finkel is doing very well. In fact, she’s had two full meals, her blood pressure is fine, she is to be taken off the heart monitor in a couple of hours and, if she continues this improvement, Dr. Cohen is going to send her home Tuesday at noon.” The woman said, “What a relief! Oh, that’s fantastic . . . that’s wonderful news!” The nurse said, “From your enthusiasm, I take it you are a close family member or a very close friend!” “Neither! I AM Sarah Finkel in 302! Starting a Straw Bale Garden

Growing plants in a straw bale garden is a type of container gardening, with the straw bale being a large, elevated container with good drainage. Growing plants in a straw bale garden can be further elevated by locating the bales in a raised bed. Starting a straw bale garden is an inexpensive and viable option to working up the soil in a regular garden. Purchase bales of straw from a farmer’s market or a local farmer. The big box stores offer decorative straw bales during the autumn holidays, but they are small and not suitable for growing plants in a straw bale garden. Bales of hay can also be used for this type of garden, but are more prone to sprouting weeds. You’ll save yourself some effort if you buy the bales in fall before you begin planting in spring. Growing plants in a straw bale garden requires that bales are conditioned before you begin planting. If you buy the bales in fall, they’ll be watered from snow and rainfall. If you purchase at the beginning of the planting season, you can condition them in a two-week period. Straw bale garden instructions direct you to water bales well for three to four weeks before using this method. Locate the bales in their permanent area. Straw bale garden instructions say each bale will hold two or three tomatoes or squash, four to six peppers or two pumpkins. You can plant seeds in the bales according to directions on the package. Growing root crops in a straw bale is more challenging. Add compost, seed-free soil or bone meal to the top of the bale, before starting a straw bale garden. Water in well. Urea can be used as a bale amendment, as can fish emulsion or fertilizer. Make sure bales stay damp. After two weeks of preparing the bale, stick your hand inside the bale to determine warmth. If the temperature is cooler than your body temperature, you’re ready for starting a straw bale garden. Place plants as you would in the ground, being careful not to cut the twine that holds the bale together. Straw bale garden maintenance includes regular watering. Consider using a soaker hose for ease of irrigation. Straw bale garden maintenance will include regular fertilization as well. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Young Farm Couple

A young farm couple, Homer and Darlene, got married and just couldn’t seem to get enough lovin’. In the morning, before Homer left the house for the fields, they made love. When Homer came back from the fields, they made love. And again at bedtime, they made love. The problem was their nooner; it took Homer a half hour to travel home and another half hour to return to the fields and he just wasn’t getting enough work done. Finally Homer asked the town doctor what to do. “Homer,” said the doctor, “just take your rifle out to the field with you and when you’re in the mood, fire off a shot into the air. That will be Darlene’s signal to come out to you. Then you won’t lose any field time.” They tried Doc’s advice and it worked well for a while. Homer came back to the doctor’s office. “What’s wrong?” asked the Doc. “Didn’t my idea work?” “Oh, it worked real good,” said Homer. “Whenever I was in the mood, I fired off a shot like you said and Darlene’d come runnin’. We’d find a secluded place, make love, and then she’d go back home again.” “Good, Homer. So what’s the problem?” asked the Doc. “I ain’t seen her since huntin’ season started.” $69 SERVICE CALL, ACADEMY APPLIANCE Service; Washers, Dryers, Refrigerators, Ranges, Dishwashers, Compactors, some areas extra charge, Serving Carson Valley (775)781-4725

Digging a Hole

A fellow stopped at a rural gas station and after filling his tank, he paid the bill and bought a soft drink. He stood by his car to drink his cola and he watched a couple of men working along the roadside. One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on. The other man came along behind and filled in the hole. While one was digging a new hole, the other was about 25 feet behind filling in the old. The men worked right past the fellow with the soft drink and went on down the road. “I can’t stand this,” said the man tossing the can in a trash container and heading down the road toward the men. “Hold it, hold it,” he said to the men. “Can you tell me what’s going on here with this digging?” “Well, we work for the county,” one of the men said. “But one of you is digging a hole and the other fills it up. You’re not accomplishing anything. Aren’t you wasting the county’s money?” “You don’t understand, mister,” one of the men said, leaning on his shovel and wiping his brow. “Normally there’s three of us -- me, Rodney and Mike. I dig the hole, Rodney sticks in the tree and Mike here puts the dirt back.” “Now, just because Rodney’s sick, that don’t mean that Mike and me can’t work.” CUSTOM MASONRY, ONE BRICK AT A TIME, Commercial/Residential, 3+ Better Business Bureau rating, serving Carson Valley 12+ years, Free Estimates, M Squared Masonry, NV#200616647 and CA#924187, Mark Durye (775)7834753 or (775)450-6219

Creation vs. Evolution has Been Settled!

A little girl asked her mother, “How did the human race come about?” The Mother answered, “God made Adam and Eve; they had children and, so all mankind was made.” A few days later, the little girl asked her father the same question. The father answered, “Many years ago there were monkeys, and we developed from them.” The confused girl returns to her mother and says, “Mom, how is it possible that you told me that the human race was created by God, and daddy says we developed from monkeys?” The Mother answers, “Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about the origin of my side of the family, and your father told you about his side.” AK TYPE RIFLE, 7.62X39MM, LIKE NEW, ONLY fired 250 rounds, upgraded with accessories and optics, sell for $800, buyer must have Nevada Concealed Carry permit, Yerington (202)538-1182 WE HAVE A LARGE SELECTION OF NEW AND Used RV’s and a full parts and service department, Carson City RV, 4550 North Carson Street, North Highway 395 (775)8828335 HARLEY DAVIDSON ENGINE REBUILDING, 30 years experience, quick turn-around! What “I Love You” Really Means

“I love you” means that I accept you for the person that you are, and that I do not wish to change you into someone else. It means that I will love you and stand by you even through the worst of times. It means loving you even when you’re in a bad mood, or too tired to do the things I want to do. It means loving you when you’re down, not just when you’re fun to be with. “I love you” means that I know your deepest secrets and do not judge you for them, asking in return that you do not judge me for mine. It means that I care enough to fight for what we have and that I love you enough not to let go. It means thinking of you, dreaming of you, wanting and needing you constantly, and hoping you feel the same way for me. “The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” New Boyfriend

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and pierced nose. Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. “Dear,” said the mother diplomatically, “he doesn’t seem very nice.” “Oh please, Mom,” replied the daughter, “if he wasn’t nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?” WE’LL KEEP YOU IN STITCHES, WE COVER boats, autos, furniture and ATV’s, 47 years experience, Tweeds Upholstery, Gardnerville, tweedsupholstery@yahoo.com or (775)782-5812 URETHANE CASTINGS, VACUUM AND PRESSURE castings, all custom, quality handcrafted, small sizes, small quantities okay, Westerfield Models, LLC, westerfieldmodels@gmail.com or (303)658-9343 GOLDS GYM POWER SPIN 230R EXERCISE bike, $125 OBO 775-885-7948 CUSTOM CANVAS WORK! Air Conditioner

The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers walked into Henry Ford’s office and sweettalked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately. Henry got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, ‘The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,’ on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. Now Henry Ford was more than just a little anti-Semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg’s name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show: Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max on the controls. So, now you know... GIRLS LANDRIDER BICYCLE, EXCELLENT condition $200 775-223-3448

“The Paper With A Hometown Flavor” Raging River

Three men were hiking through a forest when they came upon a large raging violent river. Needing to get on the other side, the first man prayed, “God, please give me the strength to cross the river.” Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across in about 2 hours, having almost drowned twice. After witnessing that, the second man prayed, “God, please give me strength and the tools to cross the river.” Poof! God gave him a rowboat and strong arms and strong legs and he was able to row across in about an hour after almost capsizing once. Seeing what happened to the first two men, the third man prayed, “God, please give me the strength, the tools and the intelligence to cross the river.” Poof! He was turned into a woman. Back Forty

An old farmer had owned a large farm for several years and in the back forty it had a nice pond, picnic tables, horseshoe courts, basketball court, etc. The pond was fixed for swimming when it was built. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn’t been there for a while, and look it over. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinnydipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end of the pond. One of the women shouted to him, “We’re not coming out until you leave!” The old man replied, “I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim or make you get out of the pond, I only came to feed my alligators.” Old age and cunning will triumph over youth and skill every time!

Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good. When in doubt, just take the next small step. Life is too short – enjoy it. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will. Pay off your credit cards every month. You don’t have to win every argument. Stay true to yourself. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone. Save for retirement starting with your first pay check. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present. It’s OK to let your children see you cry. Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it... Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful. Clutter weighs you down in many ways. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger. It’s never too late to be happy. But it’s all up to you and no one else. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special. Over prepare, then go with the flow. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple. The most important sex organ is the brain. No one is in charge of your happiness but you. Frame every socalled disaster with these words ‘In five years, will this matter?’ Always choose life. Forgive but don’t forget. What other people think of you is none of your business. Time heals almost everything. Give time time. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does. Believe in miracles. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. Growing old beats the alternative - dying young. Your children get only one childhood. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back. Envy is a waste of time. Accept what you already have not what you need. The best is yet to come... No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. Yield. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.
