BOONE coming home with the family
James, Susan, and kiddos Max, Nolan, and Quinn comprise the Boone family of Sierra Oaks Vista. They have one dog, Aiko, a Japanese Akita. The happy and sweet family of five live in their dream home and have a fulfilling and fruitful life surrounded by a community they love.

James (Jim) and Susan met years ago while both in medical school. Jim was set up on a blind date with Susan’s roommate, and Susan answered the door in pajamas. This meeting was a date with fate to spark a love that has lasted throughout the years.
Jim is a Cardiac Anesthesiologist with the the Permanente Medical Group at Mercy General Hospital. Susan is a Mohs Surgeon and Procedural Dermatologist with The Permanente Medical Group, and Clinical Faculty in Dermatology at UC Davis. The two busy professionals enjoy time spent together and with family as much as possible.
Jim and Susan both attended UCLA for their undergraduate degrees, and UC San Diego Medical School. Jim completed his Anesthesia Residency at UCLA, while Susan obtained her Masters in Public Health at Yale University, and her Dermatology Residency at Northwestern University. Jim is originally from Paso Robles, CA, and Susan was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, but immigrated to the United States when she was seven. She then grew up in Alameda, California. The couple moved to Sierra Oaks Vista in 2012.

As a couple, Jim and Susan like to take classes at Zuda Yoga in Midtown. On date nights they favor Bandera, Kru, or Localis, often ordering the same items each time because, “they’re just too good!” Susan states playfully.
Happy Caregivers providing Care with Love
The oldest of the Boone children is Max, 7 years old and current first grader. Next in line is Nolan (5) in kindergarten, and the youngest is Quinn (3) in preschool. All three children attend El Rancho School.
Max and Nolan play soccer as part of the Sierra Oaks Soccer Club, and Quinn will be starting this fall in the U-6 category. The boys also swim on the Arden Hills Aquatics team (go Otters!), and Quinn is joining Junior Otters this summer. Throughout the year, they practice at Kovar’s Martial Arts. Jim and Susan love the program and how it focuses on courage, perseverance, respect, goal-setting, self-discipline, as well as self-defense and conflict resolution.

To assist the children in their activities and provide valuable learning opportunities, the family hosts a German au-pair, Leonie Riecke, who is like family. For the last five years, the Boone family have had international au-pairs who have lived with them. They enjoy the cultural exchange that happens naturally, and many of them become a part of the Boone family, short and long term.

The kids with Leonie
As a family, the the Boones love to go swimming in the summer, ride bikes around Sierra Oaks Vista, and go skiing in the winter months. The kids love all of the neighborhood parks, and the Sacramento Children’s Museum on rainy days.

Favorite family traditions include Taco Tuesdays, Sunday brunch, or dinner at home with family and friends. A yearly tradition they enjoy is the lunar new year with family and friends. Traditionally lucky money red envelopes are passed around to all of the kids, and then they eat, eat, eat! Before Christmas, Susan explains, “the German au pairs have introduced St. Nicholas to the kids: on the eve of December 6th, the children clean their shoes and leave them at the front door. If they were good for the year, St. Nicholas will leave them treats in the shoes. If naughty, a piece of bark - ouch!”

The Boone family thoroughly enjoy living in Sierra Oaks Vista because it is a true community. They feel their neighbors watch out for each other, and they love the local events such as the 4th of July parade. For them, it is the little things, and the people they love around them that make this neighborhood so special.

The quality of leadership is one of the best skills anyone can possess. Eden Collier (13), a local resident in Sierra Oaks, is a superb example of leadership. She exemplifies leadership at school and in sports. She is a true leader, and shows it in everything she does.

Eden is the president of Sacred Heart’s student council. Being the school president is not an easy job. On Mondays, she spends time after school organizing and planning school assemblies, and themes for those assemblies. On Wednesdays, she and the student council put together and execute what they practiced the previous Monday, and create an assembly filled with facts, games, and school news. Do you know a cool young person living in Sierra Oaks Vista or Sierra Oaks? Email Elizabeth.Comstock@n2pub.com today!

Eden believes, “It is a fun way to spread school spirit and give the week some pep.” Even though it is a tough gig, Eden loves her key responsibility. “I’m the president of student council at school, and I love it so much. It gives me joy and confidence to stand up in front of our school with the microphone and lead assemblies,” Eden stated.
Another way Eden shows leadership at school is when she participated in the Academic Decathlon. She was the captain of the super quiz, and had to learn and study all of the material, and then divide it up for the others to learn. True leadership came into play during the competition. When answers were asked for, she had to raise a letter and had to either go with her gut or trust her teammates. It could go either way. “I had to think on the spot and do what I thought was right and best for the team.”
Finally, Eden has represented leadership well in her sports. She plays volleyball for both Sacramento Performance Volleyball Club (SPVC) and the Lady Rebels in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) league. Her position is middle in volleyball and has to call all balls and predict where they go. “This is a challenging thing to do, but I’ve figured out that confidence is the key,” said Eden. “I’m really loud and have a big presence when we play too.” In AAU basketball, being one of the post players also comes with responsibility. Eden has to be loud and guard the basket at all times while also cutting, flashing, and finding open spaces for clear shots.

SIERRA OAKS LIFE NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHT OUT AT WILDWOOD KITCHEN & BAR

Photography By Marty Alberti Written By Resident Writer, Leslie Lopez

On Wednesday, April 25, at 6:00 p.m., Sierra Oaks and Sierra Oaks Vista neighbors gathered together at Wildwood Kitchen and Bar in the trendy Pavilions shopping center for the very first Neighborhood Night Out for Sierra Oaks Life.

Smiles abounded as guests enjoyed music and the watermelon, Greek antipasto skewers and pulled pork sliders. The mood was upbeat and though the weather had been erratic throughout the week, the clouds parted to lend to a comfortable and relaxed setting for the event.
Had you unknowingly stumbled upon this intimate gathering you would think the attendees were lifelong friends sharing in a common celebration. That assumption might hold true for some of the participants, however, many were meeting for the first time and others reuniting after a lengthy hiatus. Renee Dineen was the winner of our drawing for a $100 gift card to Wildwood!

Neighbors new and old were navigating their 3 degrees of separation to find commonalities one would only find in a neighborhood such as this – which locals proudly call Sierra Oaks!

Having lived in Sierra Oaks for only a year and a half, I would easily qualify as a newbie. I was pleasantly surprised by how many people I actually knew. There were old friends from my early East Sacramento days who had moved to Sierra Oaks years ago, lively friends from various local clubs and organizations, and cherished yet long ago friends from my son’s younger days at Country Oaks preschool.

In addition to old friends, new friends abounded. Beloved friends and Sierra Oaks charming duo, who now live on American River, toasted with the darling couple who bought their home on Latham. Local moms enjoyed a well-earned “girl’s night out”. A young and vibrant East Sac transplant couple cradled their newborn son as they projected their future in their new home in Sierra Oaks.

If the mood for the evening was an indicator of the future for Sierra Oaks residents – go grab those sunglasses!

out the hard way if they skipped a critical step. That said, it is also incredibly enriching. Each struggle a scout faces is a lesson learned, and let me tell you, there are a lot of struggles!

THE ROAD TO Becoming An Eagle Scout

My name is Reed Leonard, and I am an Eagle Scout. My scout project was quite an undertaking. I drafted 34 Troop 1 Sacramento Scouts, parents, and family friends to complete 151 hours of work to create six raised redwood planter beds at the Sierra Arden Congregational Church, conceived with the idea that the operators of the Food Closet would be able to grow fresh produce to give away to their visitors. These beds were installed over gravel pathways with crushed rock we moved, then filled with planting soil shoveled and moved into place by the helping hands of my scouting peers. This soil is watered by an original-design irrigation system with individual cutoff valves for each bed. It was a few days of hard work through rain and shine to get everything put together. Everything was paid for with funds raised via a crowdfunding site gofundme.com and donations solicited from friends and family.

Sierra Oaks Life • June 2018 June 2018 • Sierra Oaks Life 20 21 It may be a familiar phrase to some readers, but for those who are not acquainted with the meaning of those two words, here is a bit of context. In the Boy Scouts of America, scouts advance their learning stages within scouts via a rank system. A boy will start as a Scout and start his journey by becoming a Tenderfoot. After a few months and learning some “scoutly” skills (think knot-tying, first aid, identifying poison oak, etc), he will advance to a Second-Class Scout. A few more skills are added to the mix to achieve a First Class rank. Then come the Star and Life ranks. Advancement for these ranks is where boys become men, learning leadership, service, and life skills via merit badges. All these lead up to the mighty climb up to the peak of Scouting’s rank, the Eagle Scout. Becoming an Eagle Scout is hard. This is because in order to become an Eagle, one must complete a self-planned, self-organized, and self-led service project. It takes a massive amount of perseverance. Scouts are often put in uncomfortable positions, pressed to learn how to do difficult things by failing and learning from their failures. Shy scouts will need to learn how to open up and speak with unfamiliar people, and rash decision makers will find Sac Pilates is a boutique studio in the Sierra Oaks neighborhood that’s earned high praise for its excellent trainers and individual attention to clients. Local and female owned, Sac Pilates has created a warm and welcoming atmosphere where classes are intentionally kept small. 2264 Fair Oaks Blvd., Suite 203, Sacramento, CA 95825 916.601.6629 | sacpilates.com MEETING YOUR WELLNESS GOALS! There was much more involved in my project than the hours of work my scouting crew put in; I had plenty to do in order to get everything planned out and purchased beforehand. This involved a lot of uncomfortable situations and struggles, and a lot of lessons learned. I negotiated discounts and donations on a number of supplies such as wood, irrigation parts, rocks and soil, and even refreshments to feed my hungry teenage crew. I learned how to write formal emails, create, review, and adjust a budget, conduct a fundraising effort, and how to better lead a group of rained-on, pizza-craving Boy Scouts (often the hardest type of people to lead!)... It was just as hard as it sounds, and I could not be happier with the results of the project and the effect that the experience had on me. I believe that it was and will always be one of the most valuable experiences of my life. As a result of my work on these beds, I am a more responsible, more communicative, more perseverant, and more confident person. The beds have also had a positive effect on the community, growing a season’s worth of carrots, tomatoes, and greens for the food closet. I am proud to say that those six beds are a representation of who I am and how Boy Scouts has had an extremely positive effect on my maturation and character.
BOB DYLAN MEET precious pets

Where and why did you get Bob Dylan? My daughter found Bob Dylan abandoned in the grass off of American River Drive. He was a newborn who weighed less than 2 pounds. He had not been fully weened from his mother. She brought him home while my husband and I were out of town. We received a cell phone message asking if she could keep him and before we even responded they had already made him a bed and he was settled in. Not that we would have said no since I have been rescuing animals since I was 9.
Is there a story behind his name? At the time she found him we already had 3 dogs 2 cats, all of which were female. My husband was so excited that we finally

had another male in the family so he wanted to name him Bobby Jr. My husband’s name is Bob Zimmerman which is also the artist Bob Dylan’s real name. So we named him Bob Dylan. He was a rather mangy looking fellow so he looked like Bob Dylan.
Anything unique about Bob Dylan? Our dog Trixie, who was a chow lab mix that we had rescued from the Garden Highway adopted Bob Dylan and let him “suckle” her. I’m pretty sure Bob thinks he’s a dog. He has loved dogs since, way more than other cats. As a result, when we take our dogs for a walk, Bob Dylan came along. In fact, he acts as a protector if other dogs got aggressive towards our dogs.
Any funny stories? He once came out of the bushes and pounced on a big dog that was acting aggressively. Let me just say the big dog was put in his place! He also walks with other families out walking their dogs. People ask us if we are the people whose cat walks with them. Or people will say “Aren’t you Bob Dylan’s parents?” He is far more well-known in the neighborhood than we are.

How spoiled is your pet? There was at least one dog owner in the neighborhood who would have play dates with Bob Dylan and her dog. Prior to the coyote infestation, Bob Dylan regularly visited other neighbors, sometimes inviting himself inside! Unfortunately, given all of the coyotes, we no longer allow Bob to walk with us. We either put him inside the house or inside the kennel we keep outside for him while we are walking. Either way he is NOT HAPPY that he can’t go on walks anymore.
What do you like best about Bob? Bob Dylan may not be the best-looking cat but his personality and devotion makes up for it!

Yields: 4-6 servings
Ingredients * 1 chopped shallot * 2 tablespoons oil * 1 garlic clove, minced * 1 pound ground pork * 2 teaspoons sugar * 1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder (available at almost any grocery store now!) * 1 star anise (usually found at an Asian market) * 1/2 cup rice wine * 2 cups water * 1/3 to 1/2 cup regular soy sauce * 3 to 4 tablespoons dark soy sauce * Sesame oil, a dash to taste. * 1-2 green onions, chopped.
Method: 1. In a deep sautéing pan, heat oil and sauté shallot and garlic for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. 2. Add the pork, breaking it to small pieces. When it’s no longer pink, add the sugar, five spice, and star anise. Cook, stirring, until well blended, about 1 minute. 3. Pour in the rice wine, adjust the heat to bring to a low simmer. Add the water and regular and dark soy sauces. Lower the heat to low and cover, and gently simmer for 45 min - 1 hour. 4. This dish can be refrigerated for up to a week. Reheat before serving. 5. To serve, scoop the 5-spice pork onto your bowl of rice and garnish with green onion and a dash of sesame oil. YUM!

APhotography By Elizabeth Gonsalves Comstock Written By Kris Quigley Article Sponsored By John Gudebski As I drove into the Andrews residence in Sierra Oaks Vista, home to Dr. Todd and Ashley Andrews as well as their two children Pierce and Colette, I was greeted by a circular driveway, perfectly manicured green grass, beautiful flowers, large trees, and a stately brick tudor. And while I had visited their home on several occasions, as I took their home in from a writer’s perspective I began to feel as if I was transported to an exquisite estate in the suburbs of Paris. And once inside, I knew I had arrived in France. Affectionately referred to as the #16candleshouse, the Andrews purchased their home in 2013 and partnered with Ted Smith of Ted Smith Design and builder Peter Gannon. Construction began in 2014, with the goal of preserving as much of the original home and charm as possible while expanding the residence and incorporating modern amenities. To that end, all of the leaded windows were salvaged and repurposed as were the original beams and even the bricks. The result is a timeless masterpiece that could easily grace the covers of Architectural Digest. While we stood in the entryway, anchored by the original wooden staircase and flanked by the formal living room on one side and the dining room on the other, my first question to Ashley was “who did you use as your interior designer” and her response was “nobody.” As that resonated I asked the same question because I was dumbfounded knowing I have zero talent and could never tie my design ideas together so beautifully. Her response was almost identical… “I designed the inside of my home Kris.” And so she did. The former White House staffer and now manager of her The light and bright kitchen
husband’s dental practice and CEO of her home could easily have another career in interior design. Ashley’s inspiration for her home was traditional French decor with a splash of modern flair. She clipped pictures from Sunset, Veranda, French Country, and Architectural Digest. Ashley procured furniture and decor from the now extinct Haus in East Sac, Bliss Home Design in Los Angeles, Lumens, Restoration Hardware as well as Williams Sonoma Home. And she turned to her friend Elizabeth Lake for a color and lighting consult. As we moved through the home every room was perfect and my favorite would be incredibly difficult to pinpoint. But for Ashley, her favorite room is the master bathroom. The walls are adorned in cream and gray floral wallpaper that she found in a dressing room at Ralph Lauren in New York. The crystal chandelier, by Fine Art Lighting, is a treasured gift that illuminates the room perfectly. And her beloved Kallista clawfoot tub serves as a focal point while adding additional elegance to the well thought out space. Ashley called upon her political negotiating skills, making multiple trips to Ferguson’s, to whittle the pricing down on the tub to a price point she was comfortable with. As the Parisians say, Voila! While there are additional projects the Andrews would like to tackle, they are incredibly happy with the end result of the renovation and construction of their home. Ashley’s advice to anyone considering a remodel is to not run away like she almost did! The style of a home evolves, so honor the design process and let it unfold organically. And be sure you do not always buy the most expensive pieces of furniture.

The guest room, one of Ashley’s favorite rooms in the home.

Alex grew up in the North Highlands area of Sacramento. His family migrated here when he was only seven years old, and he began his journey to someday owning his own business.
Alex is a hard-working, family man. He learned everything he could in school, and is now fluent in English. He became a naturalized citizen in 1998, and has been married to his wife for 25 years. The couple has two grown children and one grandchild. Family is very important to Alex and he works very hard to provide for them.
Alex’s father worked in the landscape industry when he was a kid, and Alex followed in his footsteps as he grew older. After graduating high school in 1990, Alex worked for a local landscape company and quickly moved up the ranks to supervisor. Alex learned everything he knows today from the owner of this company and they still call each other friends today. Alex wanted to buy into the company but the timing wasn’t right, so the owner gave Alex his blessing to start his own company.
In 2001, Majestic Landscape was born, and has grown from referrals of many of the people Alex worked with over the years. Today we specialize in commercial landscape and irrigation maintenance. In 2008, Alex launched another branch of the company, Majestic Pool Service. Majestic Pool Service is unique in the attention we give each customer. We understand people work hard for a living and want to trust someone to do the job right. We know most of our customers love their pools, but don’t have the time, education, and/or training to properly care for it, and that’s where we can help.
Our pool technicians are all trained and certified, and know how to take care of everything from start to finish so our customers can relax and enjoy their pool with their friends and family. Alex’s son, Anthony, works in the pool service side of the company as an equipment repair technician. He is very hands-on, and mechanically inclined to figure out any issue that may arise.
We can’t stress enough how important it is to leave pool care to the experts. We have seen some crazy things over the years, but have worked with several owners to keep their pool sparkling clean and safe to use.
