2022 Personal Work

Page 1

JORDAN SAUER The purpose of this is to show some of the more exciting projects I’ve done. Maybe you will even get some ideas for projects. I’m especially interested in working with wood and ceramics. As you’ll see, I am heavily inspired by animals and textures.

Personal Work 2022

Wood Gar - 2022 I had a long log and the sun split it in half over the summer. The first thing I thought of when I saw the split log was a gar. Just the right proportions... I made a template and cast its’ shadow onto the piece of wood. I then traced, cut out, sanded, and wood burned the details. Almost every fin had to be glued back on!

Curvature of the original log

Also is a good sword shape

Wood Turning - 2021

Sometimes cedar has hairline cracks and splits when turning. Thankfully the splits are so clean that it is usually possible to glue and clamp a broken bowl back together.

Walnut

Walnut - This one wasn’t so knotty. I found a bullet in this piece!

I took a class at Rockler and made the bowl on the previous page. From here I gained knowledge such as what finishes to use and the overall process. To the right is the cheat sheet I use for turning. I like using a woodchuck that holds the bowl in place. As long as the correct dimension is tooled, it works great. I mostly use green wood. This means fighting cracking and shrinking. The best thing is to use the wood as quickly as possible. When done with a bowl, putting it in a couple of paper bags helps slow down the drying process. If you can’t get to a piece of wood right away, leave it as large as possible before you cut the blanks for turning. Some of the wood will be a sacrifice, but there should still be some parts that are usable.

Cedar Bowl - 2019 I cut a cedar knot off of a tree on the ground. I started with squaring off the bottom. With the bottom square, I used a drill press to remove as much material as I could. I then used a curved chisel like an ice cream scooper to carve out the extra wood. I then sanded and stained it. I also had to put a little glue on the crack. That’s part of the challenge with carving knots. Being slow is key.

Sycamore Box - 2018

This box was a solid piece of sycamore. I squared up the rectangular prism with a chainsaw and then miter saw. Then I carefully chainsawed the top lid from the main bottom part. I used a drill press to remove the majority of the material. That saved a lot of time! The rest of the time was spent chiseling out the inside and making it as smooth as I could. Sanding, staining, and wood burning were the final steps. Hinges were also added. The goal was to make this box hold letters.
