Obituary

It is with heavy hearts today, we celebrate the life of Godfrey Edwin “Gully” Wallace Sr. A loving husband, beloved father, dedicated sibling, loyal friend and a gifted baseball and softball player, Godfrey lived a life full of heart, hustle and humility.

Born on Sunday June 29, 1958, he was the second of seven children to Ceates and Elizabeth Wallace (pre-deceased). As a young boy growing up, Gully was plagued with Epilepsy between the ages of 4-7 years old. Because of this, his older brother Kendal had to keep an extremely close eye on him when they went anywhere. Thankfully an old lady gave his mother a remedy which after using, he was cured.

Godfrey was raised on Darling Lane, New Providence where the Wallace Patriarch was a huge fan of the L.A. Dodgers and therefore, all of his children would gather around and listen to the Dodgers games on the radio on weekends. This sparked Godfrey’s interest in the game so he played with his neighborhood team which consisted of himself, Kendal and Wellington Wallace, Charlie (Cardman), David Duncombe and Daddy Grace Dawkins, to name a few.

He attended Southern Prep Primary School (now Columbus Primary), Western Junior (now CR Walker) and CC Sweeting High School.

A standout catcher and outfielder, he earned his place on the school softball team at CC Sweeting, helping to lead the Cobras to unbeaten seasons and public school titles.

After completing high school, “Gully” in his late teens to early twenties, acted on one of his passions, the game of baseball and was well sought after by many teams. He was the Catcher for Heineken St. Bernards, Fanta Raiders, Spotless Cleaners and Schlitz Beer teams in the Bahamas Baseball Association senior league. He was a major contributor to those teams winning numerous championships and was so great at the game, that he was the All Bahamian Catcher and travelled to the Pan American Games in 1979 where he was the starting Catcher and an All Star Team Member. Not only was he the best Catcher in the Bahamas (hardly anyone got pass him sliding into home plate), but he was an all around player who racked up numerous trophies over the years for Most RBI’s and Most Doubles. Later in his senior years, he played with the T-Bird Flyers softball night league team.

It was the latter part of February 2025 when a change in his speech was noticed, along with short term memory loss. He was asked to go to the doctor but he refused and as it got worse he decided that he would obey his wife and they went on March 10th. He was treated for Hypertension and had some tests and scans done. A follow up visit was done on March 27th, where it was revealed he had suffered at least 2 strokes. His pressure was brought under control with the help of his medication and change in diet. However, he complained of being very tired and painful. Gully said that it was a different kind of tiredness, one that he could not describe. When asked everyday how he was doing, his response was always ‘I’m alright, I’m good and nothing’s wrong with me” He and Petra had a conversation on Thursday, April 17th at 7:13AM. She told him that she knew that he was a praying man because she saw him do it everyday, morning and night but she wanted him to start to read the Bible more and build a more personal relationship with God. His reply was “Why are you saying these things to me? I am straight and I am ready. You’ll need to worry about you’ll self.” Then he asked her, “Do you know what the first three letters in my name spells?” She said God. He then asked her what is the last part of his name and he said free (frey). He then asked, what’s my name? She responded, Godfrey. He then said to her, “Okay and don’t forget it”. Petra then asked him if he was ready to meet his maker and he said “yes”. He then mentioned funeral arrangements briefly but that conversation was cut short quickly.

On Saturday, April 19, 2025, Godfrey and two of his brothers were working on addition to his beloved deck at his residence off Charles Saunders Highway. It is the future

site for a new business venture. As he was accustomed, “Gully” sat on the deck and gave instructions to his brothers - Kendal and Rannie. He laughed while watching them attempt to complete the assignment, That was their last laugh. As this was going on, Petra was about to leave and said twice to him, “Gully I gone, I’m coming right back” but he did not reply. Kendal replied yeah, yeah. Petra received a call seventeen minutes later saying that he collapsed. Kendal, Rannie and his brother-in-law Andy worked tirelessly to revive him but his labour on this side was completed as he never regained consciousness.

We find solace in knowing that he made peace with his God and was ready to meet Him.

Even though his laugh would be silent forever on this earth on that Easter weekend, we will forever hear it in our hearts.

That’s the way you lived your life “In Peace”. You were absolutely and positively a great guy looking for ways to light the darknes and my Pilar of strength when I needed it most. Time was precious to you because it never comes back. You worked and played hard.

A Golden Heart stops beating Hard working hands at rest, God broke my heart to prove to me, he only takes the best.

A Thousand words won’t bring you back I know because I’ve tried; neither will a Thousand tears, I know because I’ve cried.

A TRIBUTE TO OUR DADDY

Today, I want to honor the memory of a man who meant so much to us.

Growing up he worked hard to make sure we had every opportunity he could give us. He made sure we got an education, putting us through school so we could build lives of our own.

But he didn’t stop there. He believed in more than just survival—he wanted us to thrive. He made time for joys of family life with his five children and grandchildren.

Our vacations weren’t just trips; they were moments filled with laughter, discovery, and togetherness. As we got older, time spent on the deck “having a few”. Those memories are now priceless treasures.

His love was quiet but deep, steady but strong. He gave us everything he could and asked for only respect in return.

And even though as adult children, each one of us strayed away, we eventually found our way back.

It was refreshing when he answered the phone “hey wa ya say” like only he could. And you could hear that big smile in his voice knowing it was one of us on the other end.

He’s no longer with us, but his love and sacrifices live on in us every day.

We will miss you, Daddy, more than words can say. Rest in peace.

To my dear brother, Godfrey. I never thought when I visited with you a week prior to your passing, that it would be the last time I saw you alive. I did not understand at the time of my visit, why you never looked me in the face that day. However, I now understand…I think you did not know how to say goodbye. Every day that we spoke and I asked how you were doing, your response was always “I’m alright, ya know”. You imparted so much wisdom in my life and taught me so much of life’s lessons. You always encouraged me to believe that no matter how many times I may fall, to always get back up and move forward. You loved and supported me unconditionally. You were the first person in my life, to ever send me flowers on my birthday and you did this for many years. The last thing you did for me was to build my home. You told me when you started it, that it would be the last one you did. However, I never thought you meant that literally; at least not with this kind of finality. I could never forget you as you were not only my brother but also my friend, confidant, protector, teacher and one of my biggest supporters. Every time I walk through my home, your presence and the memories of you working tirelessly, are there. I will miss our almost daily chats but you have left me with much words of wisdom and sound advice. I miss you so very much, my brother. You are gone but surely not forgotten and you will always hold a special place in my heart. Take your rest. Love always, your sister - Deborah Theresa Hield, aka “Da Burgeness.

TRIBUTE TO MY UNCLE GODFREY “GULLY” WALLACE

It is hard to believe that you are actually gone. There were so many times we rode together and others where we just hung out and talked. You always spoke from the heart and did not hold back….you said you would not purge and will not have anything pent up in your heart. You said what you had to and then it was over and done with. I do not ever remember seeing you angry. Even if you were not pleased with something, you still kept calm but was stern at the same time. In the midst of it all, you made me laugh so much. Thank you, Uncle Gully, for being like a father figure to me and reprimanding me when I needed it. The wise wisdom you gave is just priceless and I will keep it close to me. Love you, “Uncle Gully”. TRIBUTE TO MY “UNCLE GULLY”

Over the past two years, I really got to spend quite a lot of time around you, as you worked on our home. Sometimes I used to say to my mother that “Uncle Gully ain’t easy and he don’t hold back”. I had so many jokes to laugh at as you put your workers in check. You always said that there was very little that escaped you. You gave me some little nuggets and advice that I will remember always as it is applicable to just about every aspect of life. Rest peacefully, Uncle Gully. Love always, your nephew, Gershon Hield.

Our grandaddy was more than just a grandfather — he was a pillar of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love in our lives. You taught us the value of hard work, the importance of kindness, and the beauty of a quiet moment shared in good company. His stories, laughter, and stern guidance shaped our lives in ways words can never fully express.

A man of integrity and warmth, you touched the lives of everyone you met with your humility and humerous spirit. You had a heart that welcomed everyone and a smile that made us feel at home.

We will miss your voice, your humor and the comfort of knowing you were always just a phone call away. Though you are no longer with us in body, your love and legacy will live on in our hearts forever.

Rest in peace, Granddaddy. You will never be forgotten.

My uncle was a man of great wisdom, compassion, humor, and kindness. He never beat around the bush—he said exactly what was on his mind. It was a quality I truly appreciated, especially when I sought his advice or opinion. Even when he didn’t sugarcoat his words, he always spoke with love and understanding.

He had a unique ability to validate your feelings and make you feel like you mattered. He encouraged me to pursue my dreams and reminded me not to give up, even during the hardest times. He could make me laugh when all I wanted to do was cry. He made the little things feel important and helped instill a resilience in me that continues to carry me through life’s challenges.

I will deeply miss our long conversations, the birthday and Christmas calls. I’ll miss your infectious laugh and hearing you recount old stories at family gatherings with Daddy and Uncle Randolph.

I still can’t believe you’re gone. It hasn’t fully sunk in yet. There’s so much I still wanted to share with you—so many moments you won’t be here for. But God knows best, and I look forward to the day we meet again.

I love you, Uncle Godfrey. Godspeed.
