OBITUARY Mr. Frederick Wellington Russell

There are some lives that are measured in years, and there are others measured by the lives they touched, the work they accomplished, and the Legacy they leave behind. Frederick was a man of determination, discipline, knowledge, and service - a man who understood the value of hard work and believed that every opportunity was a chance to learn, grow, and make a difference. On November 27th, 1949 our Creator deposited a strong soul into the lives of Alfred & Melvina Russell (predeceased). Frederick Wellington Russell was the third (3rd) child born out of this blissful union of eleven (11) two of whom predeceased him. Fred was raised in Pine Ridge and during summer holidays, weekends frequented the beautiful shores of Williams Town, where he swiftly matured under the loving guidance of his grandparents George & Clarissa Williams (predeceased). Though named Frederick, he was affectionately called Fred or Freddie by all those that knew him. Forged by a resilient lineage, he learned the survival tactics from his parents and grandparents that defined the man he became. From his earliest years, Fred grew into a strong source of support for his family. Some of his most cherished memories were of the long journeys from Williams Town to Hunters, undertaken simply to bring food home for his family’s supper. He often reminisced about those childhood moments and the responsibilities he carried, as big brothers so often do. These experiences helped cultivate in Fred a deep sense of responsibility, dependability, and love for his family. During the early years of his career, Frederick met his beautiful wife, Janet, who was a Junior Engineer at Contel, the company where they both worked. Their relationship blossomed, and on May 24th, 1975, they joined together in Holy Matrimony. Their union was blessed with four children. Fredrick was predeceased by his sons Leon, who passed away shortly after birth, and David, who tragically departed this life in 2004. Together, Frederick and Janet went on to establish Freddie’s Native Restaurant, which became one of the family’s most treasured accomplishments and a beloved part of everyday life in the Russell household. More than a restaurant, it became a place where people gathered, shared meals, laughter, stories, and fellowship. Through those gatherings, countless relationships were formed, and many lifelong connections and friendships were created. The entire Russell family also shared a strong bond of faith and community. Together, they fellowshipped with parishioners throughout Mack Town, Hunters, Lewis Yard, and Pinder’s Point at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church,

which remains a cherished part of the community. Along his faith journey, although his mobility became more limited, Frederick attended Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, where he faithfully frequented Saturday Mass. In 2013, Fred experienced serious complications with his right foot, ultimately resulting in an amputation. Yet, despite this tremendous challenge, he persevered through the aftermath and continued to enjoy life as best he could. Alongside his beloved wife, Janet, he would take weekend drives to visit their children, Anthony and Nikki. These outings often ended with a meal and a peaceful stop by the beach—simple moments that became treasured memories. In 2021, Fred’s circumstances changed drastically when he underwent a second amputation, this time of his left leg, and his vision began to diminish. During this difficult season of his life, his Godson, Charles Thompson, faithfully cared for him and remained by his side until his final day at home. Some of his recent and cherished moments were Diante’s visits to bring De’Maire for a chat with Papa. He also enjoyed those pop-up trips from David and Dasia and loved to hear of their days in Abaco face to face. Through all these trials and seasons of testing, Frederick never lost the qualities that made him so special. His bright smile and contagious laughter remained, and he continued to share them generously with the people he loved. His telephone was never far from his side. It became his connection to the outside world—a way for him to keep in touch, share meaningful conversations, laugh with loved ones, and remain connected to his extended family and many friends. Frederick’s life was one marked by FAMILY, FAITH, RESILIENCE, FELLOWSHIP, & LOVE. He faced hardship with perseverance, embraced life with a smile, and created a legacy that extends far beyond the years he spent with us. His presence brought people together, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. On August 10th, 2026, Frederick was admitted to Rand Memorial Hospital as his health quickly declined. On Saturday, August 22nd, he took a turn for the worst and was placed on life support. On Sunday, August 23rd, 2026, Frederick Wellington Russell peacefully slipped away from this physical world to be present with our Lord. Though his earthly journey has ended, the love he gave, the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the legacy he leaves behind will never fade. Left in the remnants of his life, legacy, and love, he will forever be cherished by: His beloved wife: Janet Russell; Children: Frederick Anthony Russell & Nicole Janet Gibson (Davy); Grand Children: Anthony Diante Russell, Shavante Knowles, Davanno, Davante, David & Dasia Gibson; Great Grand Child: De’Maire Russell; Sisters: Beatrice Russell, Stephanie Louis (George) & Rev. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. COMMUNION HYMN | Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer 1. GRAVESIDE HYMNS AMAZING GRACE Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now I see.

WHEN PEACE LIKE A RIVER When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.

T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear. And Grace, my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear The hour I first believed.

(Chorus) It is well, it is well, With my soul, with my soul, It is well; it is well, with my soul.

Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come; ‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far and Grace will lead me home.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

The Lord has promised good to me. His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess within the veil, A life of joy and peace.

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend Even so, it is well with my soul

When we’ve been here ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’ve first begun

I Come To the Garden I come to the garden alone While the dew is still on the roses And the voice I hear falling on my ear The Son of God discloses. (Chorus) And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own; And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known. He speaks, and the sound of His voice, Is so sweet the birds hush their singing, And the melody that He gave to me Within my heart is ringing. I’d stay in the garden with Him Though the night around me be falling, But He bids me go; through the voice of woe His voice to me is calling.

THE LEGACY OF FREDERICK WELLINGTON RUSSELL A Life of Service, Skill, Leadership, and Commitment to Grand Bahama’s Telecommunications Industry Frederick Wellington Russell, dedicated more than three decades of his life to the development and operation of the telecommunications industry in Grand Bahama. During Frederick’s employment, the telecommunications company underwent significant corporate changes, including the transition from Grand Bahama Telephone Company to Contel and subsequently Batelco. His career began in December 1963 and took him from an entry-level janitorial and messenger position to senior management, technical leadership, customer service, revenue responsibility, and major telecommunications projects throughout Grand Bahama and Bimini. Frederick began his education at St. Vincent in 1958. After completing his schooling, he entered the workforce in December 1963 with the Grand Bahama Utility Company, within the telephone section associated with the Grand Bahama Port Authority. He began as a janitor and messenger, positions he held for approximately three to four years. Rather than remaining in those roles, Frederick used every opportunity to learn and advance. His willingness to work, learn, and develop new skills became the foundation of his career. Under the guidance of experienced telecommunications professionals, Frederick began developing the technical knowledge that would define his career. Frederick progressed into the main telephone exchange, where he worked as a helper making connections and routing switches. He later transferred into the outside plant, where he learned the trade of climbing, connecting telephone wires, and participating in telephone installation projects. His responsibilities continued to expand. He became involved in pre-wiring hotels and installing telephone extension systems. Technical Training & Advancement Frederick’s desire to advance his knowledge led him to pursue additional education. He attended evening classes in mathematics and English at Freeport High School to prepare himself for technical training abroad. In 1972, he traveled to Dallas, Washington, for technical training in basic and advanced switching. His studies included print reading, adjustments, and AC/DC theory. In 1973, he returned for additional training in electronics and obtained certification in several areas of telecommunications technology. His training also took him to Stromberg-Carlson in

Rochester, New York, a major telecommunications manufacturer. During this period, Frederick experienced firsthand the technical world beyond The Bahamas and continued developing specialized knowledge that he would bring back to Grand Bahama. One particularly significant accomplishment involved the introduction of tone-dial service in the Freeport area. Frederick worked with the technology that converted dial pulses into tones through binary counting, a system based on ones and zeros that forms a fundamental concept in modern computing. Leadership and Responsibility By 1991, Frederick had become Senior Manager of the Outside Plant. His career was no longer simply about installing telephone lines. He was managing people, systems, customers, infrastructure, and service standards at a time when telecommunications were essential to Grand Bahama’s tourism and commercial economy. He was involved in telecommunications work for the airport, including helping to establish the pre-clearance lounge for United States Customs and Immigration. He also worked on the telecommunications systems serving the control tower at Freeport International Airport. His accomplishments and performance led to his appointment from the national office to spearhead Customer Services for Grand Bahama and Bimini. His responsibilities covered numerous areas, including telecommunications operations, credit and collections, assignment and facilities, marketing, technical sales, directory publication, overseas operators, and customer service operations throughout Grand Bahama. His work also extended to areas such as Sweeting’s Cay, West End, Grand Cay, and Bimini, After moving into the executive office in Freeport, he assumed responsibility for revenue operations. Frederick retired on May 31, 1999, leaving the company in such a progressive and lucrative stance as he and his staff had generated tremendous amounts in revenue. His career therefore represented decades of direct contribution to the growth, reliability, and profitability of the telecommunications industry in Grand Bahama. Frederick Wellington Russell’s career is a testament to a generation of Bahamians who built, maintained, and advanced the systems upon which Grand Bahama’s businesses, hotels, airports, and communities depended. His work is part of the history of Grand Bahama—and his legacy deserves to be remembered.

A Tribute to MY BELOVED HUSBAND For fifty‑one beautiful years, I had the honor of loving a man whose strength was never defined by sight or limbs, but by the depth of his spirit. He was my partner, my covering, my friend — a gentle, courageous soul who carried dignity through every season of life. In the final four years of his earthly journey, he faced blindness and double amputation with a grace that humbled everyone who witnessed it. Though his body endured hardship, his heart never wavered. He remained patient, hopeful, and full of quiet strength. His perseverance became a testimony; his love became a refuge; his faith became a guiding light. He taught me that true courage is not the absence of suffering, but the refusal to let suffering steal joy. Even in the hardest moments, he held onto laughter. Even in silence, he held onto peace. Even in pain, he held onto God. Today, we honor his journey with the song “When I See Jesus” by Jeremy Rosado — a reminder that every tear he shed, every trial he endured, and every burden he carried has now given way to rest. The struggles of this life are behind him, and he now stands in the presence of the One who sustained him through it all. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion, resilience, and love that will echo through generations. His life was a gift. His presence was a blessing. His memory will remain a light that continues to shine in our hearts. He is deeply loved. He is profoundly missed. He is finally at peace. Janet Russell

A TRIBUTE TO MY FATHER My father was a man whose strength shaped my life long before I understood what strength truly was. He taught me how to stand tall, how to work hard, how to love my family, and how to face life with courage — not the loud kind, but the quiet kind that shows up every day and never quits. In these last years, I watched him endure challenges that would have broken a lesser man. Blindness tried to take his world, and amputation tried to take his independence — but neither ever took his spirit. He fought with dignity. He lived with grace. And he loved us with everything he had. To me, he was more than a father. He was my example. My teacher. My hero. He showed me what real manhood looks like — not perfection, but perseverance. Not ease, but endurance. Not just providing for your family, but being present for them, even when life becomes hard. I will forever carry the lessons he gave me: how to be strong, how to be gentle, how to be faithful, how to be a man who keeps going no matter what comes. I am often reminded of the pain he carried, the battles he fought, but most importantly the peace he now has. Every struggle is behind him. Every tear is wiped away. And I know he is finally resting in the presence of the One who sustained him. Dad, thank you for everything you poured into me. Thank you for loving us. Thank you for fighting. Thank you for staying strong until the very end. I will honor you with my life. I will carry your name with pride. And I will miss you for the rest of my days. Rest well, Dad. You earned it. I love you always! Frederick Anthony

A TRIBUTE TO MY DAD Growing up, I was often considered “spoiled.” And perhaps, in some ways, I was. But I know now that what people called spoiled was really a reflection of how deeply my father loved me. You always made sure I was taken care of. You wanted to know that I was okay and that I had what I needed. That was simply who you were—a man who took care of the people he loved. Even through my teenage years, when I’m sure I tested your patience more than a few times, you remained compassionate with me. You continued to love me, guide me, and support me. Your love never depended on whether I was easy to understand or easy to raise. You were simply my dad, and you were always there. You were my biggest supporter in every accomplishment. Every milestone, every achievement, every step forward—you celebrated me. You often reminded me of your career path and how similar my journey was becoming to yours. At the time, I don’t think I fully understood the significance of those conversations. Looking back now, I realize how proud you were of me. proud of you too.

And Daddy, I want you to know that I was—and will always be—

Subconsciously, I was always striving to become the best version of myself. I wanted to grow, to accomplish something meaningful, and to make you proud. I didn’t realize that, in doing so, I was walking along a path that in many ways mirrored your own. Perhaps that was your influence on me all along. I was raised in a home that was private. We didn’t necessarily share everything with the outside world, but within those four walls, there was togetherness. There was family. There was love. There was a bond that belonged to us. And there were also moments when I saw you hurting. There were times when I watched you go through so much, and I would hide my own hurt because I didn’t want you to see how deeply it affected me. I didn’t always know what to say or how to help. So, I carried those feelings quietly. What I didn’t realize then was that watching you endure those difficult moments was also building something inside of me. It became my silent strength. Your resilience taught me that strength doesn’t always have to be loud. Sometimes strength is simply continuing. Sometimes it is getting up, moving forward, and carrying what life gives you with dignity. Your influence will not end with your passing. It lives on in me. It lives on in my children. Your mark is not only in the work you accomplished or the career you built. Your greatest mark is in the lives you touched and the family you raised. Rest peacefully, Daddy. Your assignment is complete. Your mark has been made. Your legacy lives on. Until we meet again, I love you. Nikki

TRIBUTE TO FRED RUSSELL In Loving Memory of a True and Faithful Friend

Fred Russell was my friend — and more than that, he was a decent, respectable human being whose character spoke for itself long before words ever could. I first met Fred when I travelled to Grand Bahama, his beloved home island, as part of a delegation from Batelco. From that very first encounter, a bond was formed. What began as a professional meeting quickly grew into a friendship marked by trust, respect, and genuine affection. Over time, our families became one, cherishing a connection that endured across islands, across years, and across every season of life. Although I was his supervisor and he my supervisee, Fred carried himself with a level of respect and integrity that made the distinction effortless. He knew how to separate work from friendship, and he honored both with equal devotion. He was honest, generous, conscientious, and unfailingly helpful — the kind of man whose word meant something, and whose actions reflected the goodness of his heart. Distance never diminished our friendship. Even though we lived on two different islands, we remained close, speaking several times each week. Fred took the concept of friendship

to another level — one defined by consistency, sincerity, and unwavering loyalty. On August 22, Fred telephoned to tell me he had been admitted to hospital. He assured me that once he was discharged, he would call again. Not wanting to trouble him while he was recovering, I told him to reach out when he felt stronger. I held on to that promise. That is why the call from his daughter on Tuesday — telling me that Fred had passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2026 — came as a shock that left me deeply saddened. Fred’s passing has left a quiet space where his voice once lived, but his memory remains bright. I will always cherish the friendship we shared — a friendship built on respect, kindness, and the simple, profound joy of knowing someone who cared. Rest in peace, Fred. Your friendship was a gift, and your life a blessing. You will be remembered with love. Your Friend Charles Alexander Gibson

My family knew it and everyone else knew us as one. Freddy and I developed a Genuine Love for one another and very seldom did a day go by, even when I transitioned from Island to Island throughout my career’s tenure, when we did not speak in person or by phone. Ever since he fell ill and I myself, we NEVER conversed and hung up the phone without saying “I LOVE YOU BRO”. Unashamedly as two Big Old Men. We shared experiences, comforted one another, prayed for one another and looked out for each other’s children. I became his Doctor, Lawyer and Confidant in most matters and he mine. Simply incredulous!

A TRIBUTE TO MY BIG BROTHER Mr. Frederick Wellington Russell Esq., JP.. In October of 1982 - I arrived on Grand Bahama from New Providence as a Young Subordinate Police Officer. An incident occurred as I was being driven to Headquarters that very first day, that took the Drivers into Hunters, where I by miraculous chance met one Mrs. Melvina “Mother” Russell. FREDDY’S MOM - THE BOSS LADY! Before those young officers could get into trouble with this lady, I interceded and sorted out the matter of her Shop License, much to her satisfaction. Her exact words were, “Now dis a sensible Policeman. Boy what is your name”. From that day to the day of her passing, when I said my name was “Clarence Russell”, she said, “It’s no wonder you are so sensible, you is family My Son”. Mother directed me to sit down in Uniform, as she directed the other Officers that they could go and return for me if they were too busy to wait but I wasn’t going anywhere until I had met the rest of My Russell Family and I wasn’t man enough to leave with Gun on my side. She summoned Freddy and he came over promptly. She introduced me to him and said, “Boy as of today this is your brother, my child Clarence. Treat him as such! From that faithful day in 1982, some 44 years ago until today, only close members of this family and few others, knew that I was Mother’s Non-Biological Son. Freddy and I and this family were one.

When Mother passed, we both lost a significant part of our lives. You see I lost my biological mother on 27th May 1968 and from Mrs. Melvina learnt that in our talks, she directed I never say that again - as I had a mother in her. Freddy grew frailer as he became a double amputee and we always joked that as soon as we got his artificial legs, we would be heading into CUBA for a one-week trip and MEDICAL CHECK UP. That day never came. On this last occasion when Freddie became hospitalized, he made the hospital call me, to convince the Hospital Administrator to release him IMMEDIATELY to go home. That was not something I was empowered to do, nor was I willing to do. When his wife Jan and sister Beatrice contacted me and said that Freddie had passed that faithful night post 8pm., I almost died myself. The PAIN and ANGUISH I felt in that instance was the same PAINS and ANGUISH I experienced, when I lost my 42-yearold daughter Mitzi, almost one year ago in New Providence. I still cannot believe that My Brother, My Friend, My CONFIDANT, My Lawyer was gone. My last two children are his God Children, and both Our Wives are Mrs. Janet Russells. We shared a lot in common from 1982 to this very day. We Loved Him dearly but Jesus the Christ Loved him best. And May his Precious Soul Rest in Peace and Rise in Perfect Glory. From: Clarence II, Janet, Tenaj, Clarence III, Caia and the Entire Russell Family!

In Loving Memory of FREDERICK RUSSELL August 29, 2026

A TRIBUTE TO MY GODFATHER

Thank you for being my godfather, my guide, and an example I could look up to. Your love, wisdom, and presence touched my life in ways I will always cherish. I will forever remember our talks when I came to visit, especially our conversations about the foods you should and shouldn’t eat. You always wanted lobster, and I would say, “You cannot eat that!” Then you would tell me, “Tell Eleanor to bring me some lobster.” And somehow, Eleanor would always make it happen. Those little moments and conversations are memories I will treasure forever. One thing I can always say about my Godfather is that if he wanted to find you, he would call everybody until he found you. He would not stop until he heard your voice. That was just who he was persistent, caring, and determined to keep the people he loved close. I would always tell you, “Don’t be stressing Jan out,” and you would just laugh. That laugh is something I will never forget. Those simple moments, the shared jokes, and the conversations we had will stay with me forever. Rest knowing that you mattered, you were deeply loved, and you will always be remembered. Rest peacefully, Godfather. You will never be forgotten. Love: Charlotte Edden
