The Obituary of Mrs. Barbara Chong

On September 14th. 1949, a beautiful baby girl was born to happy parents, Chester T. Clarke and Ruth Patricia Thompson-Clarke and they named her Barbara Muriel.

She was their first daughter and the apple of their eye, and they fondly called her Babsie.

Barbara was born at the family homestead in Mason’s Addition now known as Marshall Cooper Park, named after her great grandfather, The Reverend Marshall Cooper.

She remained there until age 12 after which the family relocated to Mt. Royal Avenue. During that time she attended St. Anne’s Prep for a few years.

Mason’s Addition held great memories for her as during that time her mom gave birth to three additional siblings, Janice, Hugh and Wendell. There were now more children to grow and play with, in addition to all of the relatives and friends in the neighbourhood with whom she had bonded. They came from near and far to either have typing and shorthand classes from her mom on the large upstairs porch, or to delight in the seasonal fruits available while playing with her and her siblings.

Even though moving to The Valley was a new experience, she quickly made friends with most of the neighbors while enjoying the arrival of baby sister McDonna Robyn which completed the five. It was during this time that Barbara attended Southern Junior, Senior High Schools, Queens College High School, and finally the original Government High School in what was then called Form

Barbara held many summer jobs which included Chester Thompson Real Estate, where she practiced her stenographical skills that her mother taught her years earlier. As a teenager, she was also employed at Bowe’s Super Market on Market Street as a cashier every summer. Uncle Bo-Jo made sure of that.

Following her time in Form 4 Special, Barbara studied abroad attending the Florida Memorial College where in addition to her academics, she often appeared on television singing with a local college group. After her studies in the USA, she returned to Nassau taking a summer job at Bahamas Airways in 1970 as a ticket agent, never dreaming that she would remain in the Airline industry. At that time, she married the now late Gladstone Solomon Jr. and that union was blessed with her firstborn Patricia, whom we affectionately call Patty. Later, Barbara re-married Vincent Chong and they had two more beautiful children, Lee and Tiffany.

Indeed, Barbara’s summer job turned into a career she had never envisioned at the time. Her first departure gate was at Bahamas Airways to join Pan American Airlines. She continued her onward journey to Bahamas World Airlines Charter Co., then took a return flight to Pan American Airlines until they unfortunately went out of business. Barbara, never one to give up, became station manager at Trans World Airways and then went on to be the General Manager of American Eagle. The final departure gate in her storied Airline carrier was in 1997 with Continental Airlines which merged with United Airlines where she spent the last years of her employment until she opted to retire in 2019.

Barbara is fondly remembered for always unexpectedly showing up (like the flying nun), whenever family was traveling. During her retirement party, when asked how she was able to remain in the airline industry for such a long time, she replied, “The thing that made the job so interesting was that no two days were the same!”

Outside of the airline industry, Barbara was a member of St. George’s Church in her earlier years and St. Ambrose Church during her latter years. Being a member of St. Ambrose’s church choir brought her great joy and wonderful friendships, bringing her full circle to the days of choral singing in her youth. She loved singing and had an angelic voice, which she inherited from her father.

Barbara was a well-rounded and compassionate human being. Despite the demands of an unpredictable job for this aviation pioneer, her top priority was always being a loving mother and grandmother. She especially loved cooking and baking with her children and three grandchildren Kayden, Kassandra and Kiarah.

Growing up, Barbara’s children often recounted to her how their friends were constantly phoning the house to ask what they were having for dinner while at the same time lamenting the fact that they didn’t have the same variety of world cuisine. In her latter years, she continued this tradition with her

beloved grandchildren showing them that no matter how busy she was, she always made time to care for their every need. After her retirement her bond with her “three little cherubs” became even closer, attending school productions and sport days, going for walks on the beach, having movie night sleepovers with popcorn, baking delicious treats in the kitchen and the list went on and on.

She will be greatly missed and never forgotten. You can rest now Barbara, knowing that you have given your all to those you love, and we shall all meet again.

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; HE will never leave you nor forsake you.

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

Order of Service

THE RECEPTION OF THE BODY

(In remembrance of our baptismal garments a white pall/covering is placed over the mortal remains of Barbara)

Officiant: With faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the body of our sister Barbara for burial. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God our Heavenly Father, the Giver of life, that He will raise her to perfection in the company of the Saints.

Officiant: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Officiant: O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister Barbara. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE OPENING SENTENCES

Officiant:

Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and I am the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. (John 11:25-26)

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His compassion never fails; every morning they are renewed. (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Jesus said, let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. (John 14:1)

I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8: 38-39)

If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For this and Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. (Romans 14: 8-9)

We brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord take away: Blessed be the name of the Lord. (Job 1:21)

The eternal God is our refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. (Deuteronomy 33:27)

THE INTROIT HYMN | “Through All The Changing Scenes of Life”

Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ.

O magnify the Lord with me, with me exalt his Name; when in distress to him I called, he to my rescue came.

The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just; deliverance he affords to all who on his succor trust.

O make but trial of his love; experience will decide how blest are they, and only they who in his truth confide.

Fear him, ye saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; make you his service your delight; your wants shall be his care.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God who we adore, be glory, as it was, is now, and shall be evermore. Amen

THE COLLECTS

O God, who by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ destroyed death, and brought life and immortality to light: Grant that your servant Barbara, being raised with Him, may know the strength of His presence, and rejoice in His eternal glory; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

PRAYER FOR THE FAMILY (BY ALL)

Most merciful God, whose wisdom is beyond our understanding, deal graciously with the family of Barbara in their grief. Surround them with Your love that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in Your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lesson: Isaiah 25:6-9 | Mrs. Kristina Williamson (Niece)

At The beginning of the reading, the following is said:

Reader: A reading from the Word of God written in Isaiah Chapter 25, beginning at the 6th verse.

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

At the end of the Old Testament Lesson, the following is said:

Reader: The Word of The Lord All: Thanks be to God.

THE 23RD PSALM | Chanted by St. Ambrose’s Church Singing Choir

1The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; 3he revives my soul and guides along right paths for his name’s sake. 4Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.5You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

May eternal rest be granted to her, Oh LORD. And let perpetual light shine upon her.

THE EPISTLE | Revelation 21:2-7 | Kayden Chong (Grandson)

At The beginning of the reading, the following is said:

Reader: A reading from the Word of God written in Revelation to John, Chapter 21, beginning at the 2nd verse.

And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’

And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Those who conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.

At the end of the New Testament Lesson, the following is said:

Reader: The Word of The Lord All: Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN | “Hark My Soul, It Is The Lord”

Hark, my soul, it is the Lord; ’tis thy Saviour, hear his word; Jesus speaks, and speaks to thee, ‘Say, poor sinner, lov’st thou me? I delivered thee when bound, and, when wounded, healed thy wound; sought thee wandering, set thee right, turned thy darkness into light. Can a woman’s tender care cease towards the child she bare? Yes, she may forgetful be,

yet will I remember thee. Mine is an unchanging love, higher than the heights above, deeper than the depths beneath, free and faithful, strong as death. Thou shalt see my glory soon, when the work of grace is done; partner of my throne shalt be: say, poor sinner, lov’st thou me? Lord, it is my chief complaint that my love is weak and faint; yet I love Thee, and adore; O for grace to love Thee more!

All, including members of the bereaved, to stand for the chanting of The Gospel

THE

HOLY

GOSPEL

| John 14:1-6

Jesus said, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

At the end of the Gospel, the following is said:

Priest: This is the Gospel of Christ

All: Praise To Christ Our Lord

AN ANTHEM | “The Holy City” | St. Ambrose’s Church Singing Choir

THE SERMON | The Rev. Fr. Scott Brennen

THE APOSTLES CREED

Celebrant: Let us with confidence and hope confess the faith into which we were baptized, as we say,

All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERTORY HYMN | Living By Faith

I care not today what the morrow may bring, If shadow or sunshine or rain, The Lord I know ruleth o’er everything, And all of my worries are vain.

Refrain:

Living by faith in Jesus above, Trusting, confiding in His great love; From all harm safe in His sheltering arm, I’m living by faith and feel no alarm.

Though tempests may blow and the storm clouds arise, Obscuring the brightness of life, I’m never alarmed at the overcast skies— The Master looks on at the strife. Refrain...

I know that He safely will carry me through, No matter what evils betide; Why should I then care though the tempest may blow, If Jesus walks close to my side. Refrain...

Our Lord will return for His loved ones someday, Our troubles will then all be o’er; The Master so gently will lead us away, Beyond that blest heavenly shore. Refrain...

THE PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

President: Through Your goodness Lord, we have this bread and wine to offer, the fruit of the earth and the work of human hands. They will become our spiritual food.

All: All things come from You, O Lord, and of your own do we give you. Blessed be God for ever. Amen.

ALTAR CENSING HYMN | Pleasant Are Thy Courts Above

Pleasant are thy courts above in the land of light and love; pleasant are thy courts below in this land of sin and woe: O my spirit longs and faints for the converse of thy saints, for the brightness of thy face, for thy fullness, God of grace.

Happy birds that sing and fly round thy altars, O Most High; happier souls that find a rest in a heavenly Father’s breast: like the wandering dove, that found no repose on earth around, they can to their ark repair, and enjoy it ever there.

Happy souls, their praises flow even in this vale of woe; waters in the desert rise, manna feeds them from the skies; on they go from strength to strength, till they reach thy throne at length, at thy feet adoring fall, who hast led them safe through all.

Lord, be mine this prize to win, guide me through a world of sin, keep me by thy saving grace, give me at thy side a place; Sun and Shield alike thou art, guide and guard my erring heart; grace and glory flow from thee; shower, O shower then, Lord, on me.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

President: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

President: Lift up your hearts.

All: We lift them up to the Lord

President: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God

All: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

President: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Father almighty, everlasting God: Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of life eternal. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

President: Sovereign Lord and Father, to you be glory and praise for ever. In your boundless wisdom you brought creation into being; In your great love you fashioned us in your image; In your tender compassion you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour, to share our human nature; In the power of the Holy Spirit, He overcame the power of sin and death and brought your people to new birth as first fruits of your new creation.

On the night that He was betrayed He took bread, and when He had given thanks to you, He broke it and gave it to his disciples and said: “Take this, and eat it: This is my Body which is given for you, Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And after supper He took the cup of wine: and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

President: Therefore, Father, according to the command of your dearly beloved Son

All: We remember His death We proclaim His resurrection We await His coming in glory

President: And we offer you, Father, our sacrifice of thanks and praise. Send your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus, our Lord and Redeemer. As we partake of this holy food of new and unending life, may your Holy Spirit establish us as a royal priesthood with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed John the Baptist, Blessed Ambrose, Blessed George The Martyr and all your sons and daughters who share in your eternal inheritance; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. With Him and in Him and through Him, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father Almighty, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, in songs of everlasting praise:

All: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

President: As our Saviour has taught us, so we pray:

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your kingdom come; your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

President: God of promise, You have prepared a Banquet for us

All: Happy are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.

The Agnus Dei (Said)

All: Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant her rest.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant her rest. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant her rest eternal.

President: The Gifts of God for the people of God.

All: Our souls will feast and be satisfied, and we will sing glad songs of praiseto Him.

All are welcome to Holy Communion. If you receive Lord’s Supper in your respective churches, you are welcome to partake of Christ’s heavenly banquet

COMMUNION HYMNS

And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary’s tree, and having with us Him that pleads above, we here present, we here spread forth to Thee

that only offering perfect in thine eyes, the one true, pure, immortal Sacrifice. Look, Father, look on His anointed face, and only look on us as found in Him;

look not on our misusings of Thy grace, our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim: for lo, between our sins and their reward we set the Passion of Thy Son our Lord.

And then for those, our dearest and our best, by this prevailing presence we appeal: O fold them closer to Thy mercy’s breast, O do Thine utmost for their souls’ true weal; from tainting mischief keep them white and clear, and crown thy gifts with strength to persevere. And so we come: O draw us to Thy feet, most patient Saviour, who canst love us still;

and by this Food, so aweful and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill: in Thine own service make us glad and free, and grant us never more to part with Thee.

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Refrain:

This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long; This is my story, this is my song, Praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels, descending, bring from above Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Refrain...

Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. Refrain...

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see: All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—

Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. Refrain…

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide, Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow— Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Refrain…

My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine; For Thee all the follies of sin I resign; My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou; If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me, And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree; I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow; If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

I’ll love Thee in life, I will love Thee in death, And praise Thee as long as Thou lendest me breath; And say when the death dew lies cold on my brow, If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now. In mansions of glory and endless delight, I’ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright; I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow, If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

AN ANTHEM | “He Is Here” | St. Ambrose Church Singing Choir

THE POST COMMUNION PRAYER

All: Almighty God, we thank you that in your great love you have fed us with the spiritual food and drink of the Body and Blood of your son Jesus Christ and have given us a foretaste of your heavenly banquet. Grant that this Sacrament may be to us a comfort in affliction, and a pledge of our inheritance in that kingdom where there is no death, neither sorrow nor crying, but the fullness of joy with all your saints, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

COMMENDATION HYMN | Amazing Grace

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’ve first begun.

THE COMMENDATION

Priest: Give rest, O Christ to Your servant Barbara with your saints.

All: Where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

Priest: You only are immortal, the Creator and Maker of humankind; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to the earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, “You are dust, and to dust shall you return.” All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

All: Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. Amen.

Priest: Let us commend our sister Barbara to the mercy of God our Maker and Redeemer. Deliver your servant Barbara O Sovereign Lord Christ, from all evil, and set her free from every bond, that she may rest with all your saints in the eternal habitations; where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God forever and ever.

All: Amen.

Priest: Lord have mercy.

All: Christ, have mercy.

Priest: Lord have mercy.

Priest: Our Father in heaven,

All: hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Priest: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Priest: Let us pray: Into your hands, O merciful Saviour we commend your servant Barbara. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive her soul into the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of your everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints of light.

All: Amen.

Priest: Rest eternal grant unto her, O Lord.

All: And let light perpetual shine upon her.

Priest: May she rest in peace.

All: Amen.

Priest: May her soul and the souls of all faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

All: Amen.

THE HALLELUJAH CHORUS | St. Ambrose’s Church Singing Choir

RECESSIONAL HYMN | “For All The Saints”

For all the saints who from their labours rest, who Thee by faith before the world confessed; Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress, and their Might; Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight; Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia!

But when there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on His way. Alleluia, Alleluia!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, in praise of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia!

SELECTION | “PIE JESU FROM THE REQUIEM” | by Gabriel Faure, | pre-recorded by Patricia Solomon (Daughter)

As the body is borne or taken from the church, special biblical sentences are uttered by the priest or lay minister.

THE COMMITTAL

Minister: Everyone the Father gives to me will come to me; I will never turn away anyone who believes in me.

He who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will also give new life to our mortal bodies through His indwelling Spirit.

Man born of a woman has but a short time to live. Like a flower he blossoms and the withers; like a shadow he flees and never stays.

In the midst of life we are in death; to whom can we turn for help, but to you, Lord, who are justly angered by our sins?

You know the secrets of our hearts: In your mercy hear our prayer, forgive us our sins, and at our last hour let us not fall away from you.

Then, while earth is cast upon the coffin, the Minister says these words:

Minister: In sure and certain hope of resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to Almighty God our sister Barbara and we commit her body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

And we beseech you in your infinite goodness to give us grace to live in your dear love and to die in your favour, that when your well-beloved Son shall come again in judgement both this our sister Barbara and we as ourselves, may be found acceptable in your sight. Grant this for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen

Minister: Rest eternal grant to her, O Lord.

All: And let light perpetual shine upon her.

Minister: May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

All: Amen

Minister: May The Lord bless Barbara and keep her, the Lord make His face to shine upon her and be gracious to her, the Lord lift up His countenance upon her and give her peace.

Unto Him that is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy; to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever.

ALL: Amen.

GRAVESIDE HYMNS

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL

When peace like a river, attendeth my way

When sorrows like sea billows roll

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say It is well, it is well, with my soul

It is well

With my soul

It is well, it is well with my soul

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come

Let this blest assurance control

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate And hath shed His own blood for my soul

It is well (it is well)

With my soul (with my soul) It is well, it is well with my soul

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!

My sin, not in part but the whole Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul!

It is well (it is well)

With my soul (with my soul) It is well, it is well with my soul

It is well (it is well)

With my soul (with my soul) It is well, it is well with my soul.

MASTER SPEAK! THY SERVANT HEARETH

Master, speak! Thy servant heareth, Waiting for Thy gracious word, Longing for Thy voice that cheereth Master, let it now be heard.

I am list’ning, Lord, for Thee; What hast Thou to say to me?

Often through my heart is pealing

Many another voice than Thine, Many an unwilled echo stealing From the walls of this Thy shrine. Let Thy longed-for accents fall; Master, speak! and silence all.

Master, speak! though least and lowest, Let me not unheard depart; Master, speak! for oh, Thou knowest All the yearning of my heart. Knowest all its truest need; Speak! and make me blest indeed.

Master, speak! and make me ready, When Thy voice is truly heard, With obedience glad and steady, Still to follow every word I am listening, Lord, for Thee: Master, speak, oh, speak to me!

Speak to me by name, O Master, Let me know it is to me; Speak, that I may follow faster, With a step more firm and free, Where the Shepherd leads the flock In the shadow of the Rock!

AND CAN IT BE

And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Saviour’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! how can it be That Thou, my God, should die for me?

‘Tis mystery all! Th ‘Immortal dies! Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine!

‘Tis mercy all! let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father’s throne above, So free, so infinite His grace; Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race; ‘Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me.

Long my imprisoned spirit lay Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray, I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free; I rose, went forth and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him is mine!

Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach th’eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Baby Babbie,

Knowing you are no longer here is very hard after all the years we have been together. Thank you for accepting me with all my faults. Thank you for always taking care of me. Thank you for giving me wonderful children and for showing me what a family is (something you know I never had growing up as a child).

I will miss you. I will miss our conversations but I’m sure you are now at peace.

Dear Mom,

You did your best. Now, take your rest. Thank you for all your sacrifices: for the late nights worked to ensure we got an excellent education; for the exposure to various cultures from an early age; for yearly trips to visit family; for your support; and for ensuring we had everything we needed in order to grow into productive and empathetic global citizens. We are who we are because of whose we are.

Until we meet again in that great beyond space.

Mom,

This is the one moment I have dreaded having to face. I feel so very lost without you here with us, not being able to hear your voice is so very difficult that it’s painful. How does one say goodbye to a person you’ve known your whole life? You have been there for every season of my life. Every heartache, every celebration of every accomplishment.

You were like the air I breathe, and now without you here I struggle to catch my breath. Mom, God was so gracious that HE gifted myself and my siblings you as our mother and what a mother you were, the love you bestowed on us was unmatched. The grace in which you faced all of life’s hard aches and tests is one to be emulated. And now you have taken your rest. Mom if there is one thing that I’m sure of is that you lived knowing Jesus as your LORD and SAVIOR.

Mom, take your rest, until we meet again on that beautiful day, when the saints will rise to meet our savior in the air and we will be together to part no more, no more pain, no more tears, no more death. I will carry you with me, in my heart.

Love your baby girl Tiffy

LOVE IS MORE POWERFUL THAN DEATH

Dear Mommy,

I have had the great fortune to be born to you and to have you in my life all my life. I can remember early on all the sacrifices you made for Patty, Tiffany and I to have what was needed as children. I watched as you provided daily meals for us even after coming home after long hours at work. No, not the fast-food options but healthy home cooked meals. You always considered us first and considered yourself last when providing clothes for us to wear and private school education. For you these were your priorities. I remember every birthday and Christmas we had gifts wrapped to allow us to enjoy our childhood even if it was only some underwear and handkerchiefs.

I remember you putting my head on your lap rubbing my head when the challenges of life got me down and you rubbed my problems away with the best possible advice always being given. When I got injured in that car crash during that off island operation, I remember thinking I better let you know before you start panicking, so I called you to tell you I was hungry and if you could bring me a crack conch with plenty ketchup and bring it to Accident and Emergency for me. I saw you coming into the hospital and pushing all my commanding officers out the way telling them you want your child. I told you then “Mommy, I is a man now” and “What happened to the crack conch?”

Mommy you are a doting mother always worrying over Patty, Tiff and I like we are still little children.

Mom, it has been an absolute pleasure having you live with Francis, the kids and I for the last couple of years and watching your love for them and their love for you. Parting the kids fights over whose time it is for Grammy sleep overs and who gets to sit next to Grammy during Grammy’s movie nights.

Watching you, Kayden, Kassandra and Kiarah during their many baking lessons, while you were trying to keep their fingers out of whatever you were preparing.

All along while you lived with us, I thought I was helping you, but I now know you were helping me. Seeing and interacting with you every day benefited the kids and me. I have numerous memories of you and when I miss you, I will always have these beautiful moments to replay in my mind.

I will miss your beautiful face and smile. I will miss your voice. I will miss the sound your slippers make as you glide around the house and the wonderful meals you take time to prepare . I will miss our conversations and your laughter. I will speak with you when all is quiet and there is no one else around and I pray you remember me when we meet again.

Forever loving you. Your one son. Lee.

From the moment I met you, you welcomed me with open arms, and I was quickly made to feel like your third daughter even before Lee and I got married. Our female bond only got stronger and stronger over the past 23 years. I was impressed from early on with your cooking and baking skills, from elaborate Christmas spreads that left us wanting to take a long nap right after, to every day treats like homemade cherry juice, soursop ice cream, cherry cheesecake.

The pride in your eyes on our wedding day was unmatched until the day Lee and I surprised you with the news that you would be a grandmother. I remember the following two announcements as if it were yesterday that you would be a grandmother again and again! Thank goodness for technology as I often replay those videos over and over watching your excitement, tears and laughter…..

Losing a loving parent leaves a hole that time does not heal as having to say goodbye to my Dad 10 years ago and now losing you is not easy. Mama Chong, the pain is so intense as reality is kicking in that I am no longer going to see your beautiful face, that heartwarming smile, the laughter we would hear from you on a daily basis thanks to Kayden, Kassandra or Kiarah saying or doing something funny and unexpected. Oh man, what fun you and I would have cooking and baking in the kitchen especially if I was trying to learn a new recipe from you. You would look at me and laugh when I would ask you for exact measurements as your first answer was always “Oh, just use a little of this and a little bit of that!”

It was truly an honor having you live with us. It was truly an honor being able to give back and care for you when regular everyday tasks became challenging. Our kids miss you like crazy. Lee and I miss you like crazy as the void of not having you here with us in body anymore is immense. I’m going to miss our jokes about weekly store specials. I’m going to miss putting our shopping lists together for Walmart and Sam’s Club and the list just goes on and on….The days, weeks, months and years ahead will be different however we have soooo many pictures, videos and memories of you that will hopefully assist with lightening our heavy hearts.

I thank God for you, your kind and gentle heart, your unwavering love for me and most of all the special bond you had with “your three grandkids”!

Your “one grandson” Kayden was insistent this year’s Mother’s Day on purchasing a very special Pan American Lego plane that he set his mind on to build for you despite the 1903 pieces and 513 steps. Kayden worked for several days for several hours to finish the plane for you, he even added a separate light kit that he built into it. He was so proud of being able to complete, what unfortunately turned out to be your very last Mother’s Day gift from him. I was able to give you your belated specially crafted gift in hospital on May 24th and you ended up taking your final flight 5 days after.

Till we meet again. Love, Francis

Imiss you Grammy and I really wish I could see you one last time.

I wish your spirit could be here in home, so I could jump and hug you again.

I wish you were here, so I can hug you with ALL my heart.

Ooh, ooh something smells so good when you bake. I wish you were here, so I miss you with all my heart, so I want you to be here.

Ooh, I like when you bake. I like when you give me hugs and breakfast. I like you giving me Minnie Mouse pancakes, they are my favorite pancakes in the world. You are the best baker in the world but sometimes we need to let go of people.

So, I wish you could stay here in the Bahamas instead of in heaven but luckily you have no more pain, and you get to see all your family. So your family can hug you and I know you miss your Dad, Mom, brother and everyone else and you can see Bam again. I really wish you could come here. I want you to be here with my family, so I will miss you forever and ever and ever.

TO BIG SIS, BARBARA.

Only three years separated us and since you were my big sister, always guiding me along the way, I was in awe of you.

We exchanged dolls or performed during “Concert-Time” at both Masons Addition and Mt. Royal Ave., where we would sing and dance to songs from the latest musicals, usually The Sound of Music or Carousel until we were both exhausted. Barbara’s singing voice was incredible, just like our father’s voice was as well as the voice of his brother and sisters were and she passed this gift on to Patty.

Because Barbara was the eldest child, she had the honor of assisting Mom in the kitchen and soon we were enjoying Barbara’s doughnuts and cakes, which were delicious!

She also found time to borrow only my best clothes and wore them until I didn’t want them anymore. The white pants suit! Oh, those were the days…

With Mom teaching day and sometimes nighttime, you were sometimes our second Mommy. You took charge and kept the household together until Mom got home. We looked up to you and are grateful for the sacrifices you made.

What a joy it was to observe you when you gave me constant instructions on Hugh’s funeral booklet and service just a few weeks ago. I actually enjoyed how you bossed me around like the big sis you were even though you were so very ill yourself.

You have shown me what strength in diversity is supposed to be throughout your illness, what a positive attitude you had and again, I was in awe of you.

Losing you so soon after Hughie or anytime for that matter is unbearable but I know that ONLY GOD is lifting us up through this.

Many years ago, we decided to make a cassette recording of us singing a song from Carousel along with our dear Uncle Ossie, daddy’s brother. I can still hear Barbara singing in her highest soprano voice: “Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,

And you’ll never walk alone! You’ll never walk alone.”

What joy you brought into my life Big Sis. You will always be in my heart.

Jan

A TRIBUTE TO MY BIG SISTER BARBARA

You bathed me, you dressed me, you fed me. When Mummy was busy teaching night classes you took the reins of the family household. You made sure we ate, washed the dishes, did our homework and ironed our uniforms for school.

You disciplined us, hid our Christmas gifts, and let us play outside with our friends for a while. Often if we were good you would let us watch TV, even though it was against Mom’s rules. The FBI, the Mod Squad, we had to post a lookout to see when Mom was pulling up so we did not get caught. Often Hugh, Robyn or I would have to stand in front of the TV, pretending to polish it till that little blue dot disappeared.

You loved to sing. “ The Hills are Alive” from the Sound of Music, was one of your favorites, when it was raining, it was, “ You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Often you and Jan with some of your friends would pull out those old Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdinck albums, yuck! Love the Sly and the Family Stone though. You would always outshine everyone else by ending a song with a high note, drowning out everyone else. You were always in the kitchen with Mommy singing and cooking.

When you were at Pan American Airlines you took me on my first flight and when I went off to college the first time you bumped me up to firstclass. You were always there for our departures and arrivals. You helped me get Kenneth’s visa and other documents he needed to go off to school. THANK YOU!

When you got your own house in Mount Pleasant, and I would come by on weekends; the aromas of food and cakes was the first thing to greet me. You and Tiffany would be baking, just to be baking. Your meals were always healthy and nutritious with a lot of the ingredients grown in your back yard. You were always making some type of juice too. I loved that passion fruit juice concentrate you made from the fruit tree in your yard. You said, “ Now Wennie this is strong, so mix a little with plenty water. I must have gotten a few gallons from that one lil jar.

I will miss you Barbara, you were the best big sister a little boy could have.

Your lil brother, Wennie

All I ever heard Mom said was...’She use to carry you to school on her bike’. I was often reminded of how great a big sister she was to me and as I grew up, she truly was. She always let it be known that she was just a phone call away for whatever and whenever and what she did for you she never spoke about it. She had such a caring, beautiful, loving heart and was a sweet sister. I’ve never heard my sister raise her voice. She always had a calming, kind and gentle way about her. I thank God for her and for giving me a chance to thank her and to tell her how much I love Her. I am so blessed to have had her play a major role in my upbringing and making me into the woman I am today.

Forever deeply in my heart, love Robyn (Your Baby Sister). You always introduced me as that.

Love You Sis, until we meet again.

Robyn

TRIBUTE TO MY DEAR FRIEND BARBARA:

If we are fortunate, childhood friendships leave imprints on our hearts. Barbara and I grew up as little girls in Mason’s Addition during a time when life in Nassau was idyllic. Fun filled days playing at school and in the neighborhood were the basis of our friendship. I was equally fortunate that despite the time and space that adulthood naturally brings, Barbara and I continued to have a special bond that lasted more than seven decades. We were always overjoyed to connect and reminisce about our special childhood days. I will miss Barbara dearly as she’s moved from time to eternity; yet I’m comforted by the love, laughter and memories that I will always cherish. Sleep in peace my dear friend Barbara.

A TRIBUTE TO A BELOVED FRIEND GONE TO SOON.

Mrs. Barbara Chong

The loss of a good friend is like losing a part of yourself. You never forget them, no matter where life takes you.

Barbara and I became acquainted in 1978 when I joined Bahamas World Airlines as a Flight Attendant. She held many hats which included Office Manager, Personal Assistant to the General Manager and Human Resources Manager.

Our friendship continued at the Lynden Pindling International Airport while I was employed with Nassau Flight Services, and she was at Pan Am/Continental Airlines.

Barbara was very outspoken. If she had something to say to you, she said it and held no animosity after.

Family meant the world to Barbara. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Her courage and strength stood as an example to all.

You may have left far too soon, but your loving presence will endure forever in our hearts and souls.

Rest in Peace, beloved friend. You are gone but never forgotten.

Your Friend, Peggy Bethel

Love, Bernadette Moultrie

Expression of Gratitude

We, the family of Barbara would like to firstly give thanks and glory and all praises to our one and true God for the life of Barbara and for the time that she was entrusted to us. We also extend a sincere Thank You to all the doctors as well as nurses, who cared for our Babsie during her health challenges. We thank all of her many faithful and supportive friends.

We wish to convey our heartfelt gratitude to all our friends, who stood by and supported our mom during the last few years. All the thoughtful gestures and displays of kindness will not be taken for granted. May God bestow his richest blessings on each of you.

For those of you that made sure that Barbara got to receive and smell her roses while she was alive, we are eternally grateful for your kindness.
