A - Operating and safety equipment
The conditions for implementation, the selection and use of personal protective equipment as well as their maintenance are defined by the employer, based on risk assessment. To enable maintenance and rescue operations, the following must be present and maintained:
• Safety stick
• Insulating mat for maximum voltage up to 36 kV or insulating platform for maximum voltage up to 63 kV.
• Insulating gloves for maximum voltage up to 36 kV.
• Voltage detector to verify the absence of voltage
The equipment must be chosen according to the maximum voltage of the installation. This equipment must be inspected in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions or, failing that, annually.
B - Fire extinguishing equipment
Fire extinguishers for electrical fires of type B, with a capacity appropriate to the premises, must bear the label: “Do not use on voltages higher than … volts.”
C - Display and signage
In every electrical room, it is recommended to have at least the following interior and exterior signage:
Interior signage:
• A single line diagram
• An interlocking diagram
• A poster with “first aid instructions for victims of electrical accidents”
• A poster indicating who to notify in case of an incident or accident
• A triangular warning sign must be displayed:
‑ For open substations, on the external faces of walls and partitions separating them from general use areas.
On any removable panel (requiring a tool) that provides access to live parts.
When the installation includes one or more internal power sources or looped/parallel circuits, warning signs must be placed.
Exterior signage:
• On each access door, at a minimum, the following must be posted: A warning sign including the identification of the room or substation. Other signs that may be used to display important information and are strongly recommended for operation and maintenance purposes (e.g., No posting, lockout/tagout instructions, etc.).
D - Emergency lightning
In addition to the mandatory fixed emergency lighting made up of self contained units, the room must include at least one portable self contained intervention light.

Lockout-Tagout (LOTO)

The purpose of a lockout is to prevent an isolating device (e.g. a circuit breaker) from being operated. It involves immobilizing the device by mechanically blocking it and signalling.
