NEWSLETTER Friday 23rd November 2018 Dear Reform Club, In my last telegram I spoke of the imminent risk of delay due to the incomplete railroad to Calcutta. Sadly, this proved to be the case, and has precipitated a series of unexpected, but surmountable events. To begin with Passepartout managed to secure a means of transport by way of Pachyderm – yes, we travelled to the next station by elephant! Not the method I would have chosen to use, but successful nonetheless given the terrain being traversed. Whilst en route we had various run-ins with locals. The first came about with Passepartout inadvertently insulting some local priests by entering a temple with his shoes on. More significant though was our rescue of a young local princess. Her husband, a provincial Rajah, had passed away and it is the custom that she, along with his body, be burned on a funeral pyre. Fortunately, my quick thinking, and a dash of bravery from Passepartout, saw us save her from the inferno and make good our escape. The Princess Aouda, for that is her name, accompanies us at present as we seek her relatives on the next leg of our journey. We are currently sailing towards Hong Kong, from where we intend to catch a steamer to Yokohama. The going is steady enough, but the Captain has warned us that we are in typhoon season and that a storm could hit at any moment. I look forward to furnishing you with a further update when we make land. Yours sincerely, Phileas Fogg
