CHAIRMAN’S NOTE MARCH 2022 Hello BCC Members, If one were to ask club members why they have joined a camera club there could be a number of answers, which in all probability would include learning, growth, photographic opportunities, and evaluation of their work from a progress perspective.

Without comparison, growth as a photographer is not measured and at Club, Regional and National levels this is achieved by the members work being judged at club evenings, in salons and other areas.

Central to this measurement is the role of the judge and the process of judging, both of which after all evaluate members work against other photographers and photographic standards/norms.

It is acknowledged Internationally that the process of photographic evaluation is largely subjective. Whilst measures and standards have evolved, with known methods in place to evaluate photos, it all comes back to the judge - who is a subjective human being after all.

When a judge (who is a volunteer) is therefore asked to adjudicate at a club evening, they are being asked to express their opinion on the images displayed to them, according to their interpretation and the norms of judging.

By entering their work at Club photographers are in effect asking for an opinion on their efforts, which will provide points for promotion, an opportunity for learning and improvement as well as being them able to express visual communication via their submission. The score allocated and comments on the image are thus the response of the judge who has expressed their invited opinion and although sometimes difficult to accept, should be seen in the light of learning and not taken personally by the member.

The prerequisite to members accepting comments and results personally, is that judges must be suitably qualified, fair, consistent, and experienced enough to give an unbiased opinion, which is conducive to learning and encourages members to grow.

One of the difficulties faced by new judges is in achieving the required proficiency. Expertise in the process can only be fine-tuned through judging, which for the beginner can result in some unhappy members, in the early stages. Understanding and acceptance of this process and need, by all concerned, is therefore a must for judges to be developed and clubs to evolve.

Members and judges are an integral part of Club life, for better or worse. If their roles are seen as a partnership, worked on, accepted by all and actively nurtured things can only be on the right track

WHAT IS THE PSSA? Mission Statement The Photographic Society of South Africa was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization.

PSSA aims: • to bring together all people interested in photography.

• to promote the highest possible standards of photography.

• to promote the interests of photography amongst all its members.

PSSA represents its members and fosters their interests at all levels.

What is PSSA? The Photographic Society of South Africa is the officially recognized Body representing photographers in Southern Africa. It is the South African equivalent of the Photographic Society of America to whom it is affiliated. PSSA is an autonomous Society and through its affiliations affords members contact with the international affairs of photography.

PSSA aims to weld together the photographic and associated efforts of individuals and clubs into one strong unit.

The Society is recognized by Government through the Performing Arts Council. It is consulted on aspects affecting photography in South Africa as well as being able to negotiate protection and exemption for photographic clubs and members.

The Society monitors and censors’ images deemed unfit for public viewing.

PSSA provides medals to and participates in the organization of National and International Photographic Salons.

Honours are bestowed and awards made by the Society. These titles and Honours are respected throughout the world.

A Photographic Congress is staged each year in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting of the Society. This affords photographers a platform to meet fellow photographers and hear speakers who are recognized as leading authorities in their particular fields.

The Society is controlled by a Board of Directors elected by the members.

The day-to-day operations of the Society are carried out by an Executive Committee, which is responsible to the Board of Directors. The Society consists of a number of divisions, which are controlled by individual Chairmen who are also responsible to the Directors. They must provide a quarterly report to the Executive Committee and Directors.

PSSA publishes a magazine named IMAGE, which covers all aspects of the Society's activities and photography in general.

Annually a directory is published containing the names and addresses of all members and member clubs, together with the Society's Honours and Awards holders.

WHY SHOULD YOU ENTER SALONS? We encourage all our members to enter in Salons as often as possible.

Photographers are invited to submit their images in various categories for possible inclusion in the salon exhibition.

A Panel of Judges scores all the submitted images and chooses approximately 20% for exhibition.

The images that are chosen are known as “Acceptances” and these are the “Salon Acceptances” that are required for Club promotion.

Back Light / Rim Light Narrow Depth of Field

Floral Still Life – A Floral depiction, typically tabletop and excluding flowers in the wild or the garden. By definition excludes a single close-up.

Long Exposure – Long-exposure, time-exposure, or slowshutter photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements Mammals Behaving Badly – Mammals (human and animal) behaving badly. The depicted behaviour as opposed to the subject itself must be emphasized by the image.

Ruined Structures – Ruins – Emphasis on depicting the architecture. Not abandoned buildings or old buildings now occupied by vagrants, but rather old buildings or houses that have started crumble and decay.

Hard at Work – Not restricted to human, animal, insect etc. but must illustrate/show something hard at work. Student studying, Cows pulling a plough, bees ladened with pollen etc.

Motion (Show Movement) –Photograph in which the viewer is clearly able to discern motion relevant to or from the main subject in the image Aircraft – The main subject and focal point of the image is an aircraft/part of an aircraft. This includes all man-made flying machines.

Back Light / Rim Light – Backlight in photography involves positioning the main light source for a photograph behind the primary subject. Rim lighting is a technique that puts light around the edges of a subject.

CAMERA LENS CHARACTERISTICS All lenses filter and focus light so that it hits the sensor or film strip correctly. However, there are a variety of other factors that determine how a camera lens affects the look and quality of the final photo.

Focal length is the measurement of distance (in millimeters) between the point of convergence of your lens and the sensor recording the image. The focal length range of a lens is expressed by a number, and that number tells you how much of the scene your camera will be able to capture. Smaller numbers have a wider angle of view and show more of the scene; larger numbers have a narrower angle of view and show less.

Aperture is how big the opening is that lets light in, expressed in f-stops. F-stops are counterintuitive, because the larger the number, the smaller the opening. For example, f/2.8 allows twice as much light into the camera as f4, and 16 times as much light as f11. Aperture affects the depth of field: larger openings create a shallower depth of field, while smaller openings make more of the image in focus.

Maximum Aperture. Lenses will list a maximum aperture on the barrel, indicating the maximum width a lens aperture can open. Typically, lenses with a wider maximum aperture cost a bit more. A lens with a wide maximum aperture is great for low light situations, so if you are considering night photography, it might be worth the investment.

Depth of Field. Controlling the amount of the photo that is in focus is one of the photographer’s best tools to help draw the viewer’s eye where you want it. For example, landscapes are typically shot so that everything is in focus, so photographers will shoot at small apertures (e.g., f11 or f16). The depth of field varies with the type of lens, due to maximum aperture.

5 BASIC TYPES OF CAMERA LENSES

There are two basic categories of camera lenses: 1. Prime lenses. Primes have a fixed lens focal length, making them faster and sharper.

While prime lenses are less flexible due to the fixed focal length, they are also fast and lightweight, making them easy to travel with 2. Zoom lenses. Zooms use a series of lenses to allow different focal lengths from a single lens, making them more flexible but not as fast. They contain more glass, which aids in their flexibility, but they also tend to be bigger and heavier than prime lenses.

Within both prime and zoom types of lenses, there are a variety of lenses, all with different focal lengths.

1. Macro Lenses This type of camera lens is used to create very close-up, macro photographs. They have a unique design that allows them to produce sharp images at extremely close range. These lenses are great for nature photography, enabling you to capture an enormous amount of detail in one image.

2. Telephoto Lenses Telephoto lenses are a type of zoom lens with multiple focal points. These types of lenses are great for isolating a subject that is far away. However, such great magnification comes at the price of a narrower field of view. In the same way that you would use a telescope to look at stars and planets, a telephoto lens is used for focusing in on distant objects.

Many sports photographers use telephoto lenses to provide a sense of intimacy with the subjects on the field (the players) while standing on the sidelines or in the bleachers.

There are many different types of telephoto lenses, and some can be quite large, heavy, and expensive, so take some time in choosing the right telephoto lens.

3. Wide Angle Lenses Wide angle lenses are ideal for fitting a large area into your frame. This is especially useful for landscape photography or street photography. With wide angle lenses, almost everything is in focus, unless your subject is very close to the lens.

4. Standard Lenses Standard lenses can be used for a variety of different types of photography. Their focal lengths fall somewhere in the middle, usually between 35mm and 85mm. A zoom lens within this range will have a small enough focal length at the bottom end to take a wider angle, full-frame photo, and a large enough focal length at the top end to zoom in on subjects.

5. Specialty Lenses Finally, there are some more specialized camera lenses that can impart a unique look and feel to your photographs. There are several types of specialty camera lenses, but a few of the most prominent examples are: •

Fisheye lens. A fisheye lens is an ultra-wide-angle lens that can take in a full 180degree radius around it. Fisheye lenses are so named because they distort an image’s field of view, making even a room in a house look like a bubble.

Tilt shift lens. A tilt shift lens distorts perspective, making things look smaller than they really are—almost as if they are toys.

Infrared lens. These lenses play with light rather than perspective, filtering out all light waves except infrared for a unique visual effect.

Angle of view: Very wide Description: Very wide view of the world. Great for landscape photography.

Depth of field: Everything is in focus. Impossible to have a shallow depth of field.

Distortion of space: Makes things seem farther away than they actually are.

Exaggerates the size of anything very close to the camera.

35mm Lens • • • •

Angle of view: Wide Description: Roughly what a cell phone would capture. Great for street photography.

Depth of field: Pretty much everything is in focus unless your subject is very close to the camera.

Distortion of space: Less spatial distortion than a very wide lens, but it still makes things seem farther away than they actually are.

Angle of view: Normal Description: Roughly the way the human eye sees the world. Good for just about any type of photography.

Depth of field: Easy to have a shallow or deep depth of field, depending on aperture range.

Distortion of space: Very little or none.

85mm Lens • • • •

Angle of view: medium telephoto Description: Great for isolating a subject from the background. Good for portrait photography.

Depth of field: Easy to get a shallow depth of field.

Distortion of space: Makes things seem closer than they actually are.

200mm Lens • • • •

Angle of view: Telephoto Description: Ideal for picking out a distant subject, the way a telescope does. Good for compressing your subject and the background.

Depth of field: Quite often has a shallow depth of field unless everything you’re shooting is quite far away.

Distortion of space: Makes things seem significantly closer than they actually are.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A CAMERA LENS

There are a few important factors to take into consideration when investing in a new camera lens.

Cost. Lenses can get very expensive very quickly. If cost is a concern for you, consider a middle length zoom lens—for example a 24-70mm (f/2.8) lens. This is a workhorse lens that works well in a variety of situations, from portraits to landscapes.

Size and weight. Another major factor to consider when buying a lens is how large and heavy it will be. A large telephoto lens can weigh as much as 4 to 5 Kilograms.

Consider what the purpose of your camera and lens is; if it’s simply to take vacation photos, opt for a lighter, more compact one. But if you’re a, say, travel or wildlife photographer, then a telephoto is important for capturing those rare shots from afar.

Features. In addition to the camera lens specs discussed above, some lenses offer additional features and functionality. For instance, many lenses have a built-in autofocus feature, which can help you easily achieve the proper focus for your

subject. Other lenses offer manual focus, which is more difficult to use, but also better suited to certain situations—for instance, low light conditions.

Compatibility. Not all lenses work with every brand or model of camera. For example, a Nikon lens will not work well with a Canon or Sony camera, unless you have an adapter (and even then, not all features will work). Before buying a camera lens, check with the lens manufacturer to ensure that your chosen lens is compatible with your camera body.
