CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE A warm welcome to all members in 2022. By now everyone should be back at work and the year is progressing at full speed. With the current seemingly accelerated passage of time it will not be long before we are counting down to Christmas again. With this in mind the 2022 Committee has convened, resulting in set subjects being finalized and published for the year ahead. The Workshops and Outings calendar is in an advanced stage and we are able to announce first quarter activities now. This is a work in progress and the full schedule will be in place by our February get together. 2021 was a difficult year for the whole country, including Camera Clubs and photographers in general, arising from restrictions on movement and get togethers due to the dreaded Covid lurgy. This has led to a downturn in overall Club and PSSA photographic interest and competition entries declined as a result. We at BCC were able to ride out the difficult periods and thanks to Teams were able to continue with virtual workshops and limited club outings. This was mostly due to the willingness of our members to step up and make a difference, with all but two of our workshops being presented by Club members. These contributions have led to improving the sustainability of the club as well as increasing the learning and skills sets of both Junior and Senior Members. Going forward the Committee would like to call on all members to build on this example of ownership and contribution to the club by focusing on and working on a club culture, which creates a warm environment for both new and existing members, as well as on improving both technical ability and artistic skills within the club. There are a multitude of ways to achieve these objectives, with participating in club events, knowing and reaching out to the members sitting next to you at such events and offering your services as a mentor being but three of them. A camera is a device operated by human beings, please let us not focus on the device only Yours in photography

WHY SHOULD YOU ENTER SALONS? We encourage all our members to enter in Salons as often as possible. Photographers are invited to submit their images in various categories for possible inclusion in the salon exhibition. A Panel of Judges scores all the submitted images and chooses approximately 20% for exhibition. The images that are chosen are known as “Acceptances” and these are the “Salon Acceptances” that are required for Club promotion.

Travel Photography – A Photo Travel image expresses the characteristic features or culture of a land as they are found naturally. There are no geographic limitations. Images from events or activities arranged specifically for photography, or of subjects directed or hired for photography are not permitted. Close up pictures of people or objects must include features that provide information about the location. Shallow depth of field (also called “small” or “narrow”) means that only a part of the image is in focus. The background and sometimes the foreground is blurred. Shallow depth of field works in portrait, nature, and travel photography. The out-of-focus part may be only slightly blurred or be completely lacking detail. Essence of a Storm (Weather) – The image should illustrate the life of the storm – moving thunder clouds, rain, heavy winds etc. etc. Floral Still Life – A Floral depiction, typically tabletop and excluding flowers in the wild or the garden. By definition excludes a single close-up. Long Exposure – Long-exposure, time-exposure, or slowshutter photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements Mammals Behaving Badly – Mammals (human and animal) behaving badly. The depicted behaviour as opposed to the subject itself must be emphasized by the image. Ruined Structures – Ruins – Emphasis on depicting the architecture. Not abandoned buildings or old buildings now occupied by vagrants, but rather old buildings or houses that have started crumble and decay. Hard at Work – Not restricted to human, animal, insect etc. but must illustrate/show something hard at work. Student studying, Cows pulling a plough, bees ladened with pollen etc. Motion (Show Movement) –Photograph in which the viewer is clearly able to discern motion relevant to or from the main subject in the image Aircraft – The main subject and focal point of the image is an aircraft/part of an aircraft. This includes all man-made flying machines. Back Light / Rim Light – Backlight in photography involves positioning the main light source for a photograph behind the primary subject. Rim lighting is a technique that puts light around the edges of a subject.

HOW TO DO SMOKE PHOTOGRAPHY 1. Set up in a dark room on a table with a black cloth and a black backdrop - either fabric or cardboard 2. Set up an off-camera flash directly next to the incense stick. Ideally the flash should be turned on its side to create a narrow, focused light on the smoke only. 3. Attach a flag (barn door or improvised black cardboard) on either side of the flash to contain and direct the light. 4. Flash settings: Manual, quarter power. 5. Camera Settings: ISO 100 or max 200, Shutter: 1/125 or max 1/160, Aperture F8 or F110. 6. If the shot is too bright first lower the flash settings or go to F11. Note that bringing down the shutter speed will not make a difference because the light freezes the action not the camera shutter speed. 7. Put up a constant light source on the opposite side i.e. torch or bedside lamp, to set up and focus before shooting. 8. Using Auto Focus, focus on the burning red tip of the incense stick while the light is on. Then switch to manual focus and switch off the light. 9. Aim to shoot just above the incense stick. 10. Move your hand gently around the incense to change the smoke pattern. 11. Start shooting!
