CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Greetings BCC Members, A return to normal, post Covid, continues with the completion of our second face to face meeting for the year. The standard of photography has been great with a good number of COM’s being awarded and many golds (not too many silvers) being evident. Both events have been well supported and big thanks are due to our catering coordinator (Charmaine), for the great food.

Our 2021 year was capped via the occasion of our awards evening, which coincided with our February meeting.

Congratulations to all the Trophy Night award recipients as well as the Winners and Top 10 achievers in our monthly digital categories, who likewise received their trophies and certificates.

Thank you also to Nico Grobbelaar and Dave Macintyre, who kindly sponsored our Salon Entry Trophy which was awarded for the first time.

Without detracting from our successful photographers, it is right to acknowledge all of our multi-talented club members, not only those who ended up being top achievers. Whilst the world loves a winner, it is fair and equitable to recognize and thank every club member for belonging and being an active part of the club - without members there would be no club or winners after all.

On another note, the winds of change have come about in the camera and accessory side since the advent of lock down and it would appear that most major manufacturers are in the process of killing off the DSLR in the short to medium term.

Whilst the new equipment on the market has incredible new features and ability and continues to progress by the month, the person with the right skills behind the camera remains the prime reason for great photos.

No need to sell off the house and car for a Z9 or R5 or R6 yet, just keep on clicking and growing and the Golds, COM’s and Salon acceptances will keep on coming.

I have been reliably informed that Boksburg is a Club with a good “vibe”. Here is to continuing that good vibe, keeping on producing great shots and above all enjoying what we do during and beyond 2022.

CLUB NIGHTS Boksburg Camera Club meet every third Wednesday of the month at Baanbreker Primary School, 1 Boerneef Street, Parkrand, Boksburg. o Time: 18H30 for 19H00 o Judging starts @ 19H00 Our remote members join our Club nights via the online portal.

Entries must be submitted via the online portal o www.photovaultonline.com

KNOW YOUR STAR RATING

Club Night Submissions: 1. Open Any two images (PDI or Monochrome) 2. Set Subject One image 3. Cellphone Image One image

Verify your star rating on Photovault. This ensures that your photos are being judged fairly.

Sizing: Images must be sized to a maximum of 1920 (Horizontal) x 1080 (Vertical) Pixels. Physical print size for the print category is A4-A3 and the digital copy of the print is 1920 x 1080 Pixels.

When you are promoted to the next Star rating, remember to change your Star rating on Photovault before our next Club Night or entry into a Salon

Save your images in JPG. File sizes should not exceed 2MB. Use your Photo editing software to resize your images.

WHY SHOULD YOU ENTER SALONS? We encourage all our members to enter in Salons as often as possible.

Photographers are invited to submit their images in various categories for possible inclusion in the salon exhibition.

A Panel of Judges scores all the submitted images and chooses approximately 20% for exhibition.

The images that are chosen are known as “Acceptances” and these are the “Salon Acceptances” that are required for Club promotion.

Back Light / Rim Light Narrow Depth of Field

Essence of a Storm (Weather) – The image should illustrate the life of the storm – moving thunder clouds, rain, heavy winds etc. etc.

Floral Still Life – A Floral depiction, typically tabletop and excluding flowers in the wild or the garden. By definition excludes a single close-up.

Long Exposure – Long-exposure, time-exposure, or slowshutter photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements Mammals Behaving Badly – Mammals (human and animal) behaving badly. The depicted behaviour as opposed to the subject itself must be emphasized by the image.

Ruined Structures – Ruins – Emphasis on depicting the architecture. Not abandoned buildings or old buildings now occupied by vagrants, but rather old buildings or houses that have started crumble and decay.

Hard at Work – Not restricted to human, animal, insect etc. but must illustrate/show something hard at work. Student studying, Cows pulling a plough, bees ladened with pollen etc.

Motion (Show Movement) –Photograph in which the viewer is clearly able to discern motion relevant to or from the main subject in the image Aircraft – The main subject and focal point of the image is an aircraft/part of an aircraft. This includes all man-made flying machines.

Back Light / Rim Light – Backlight in photography involves positioning the main light source for a photograph behind the primary subject. Rim lighting is a technique that puts light around the edges of a subject.

Lightroom vs. Photoshop: When to use each image editing program.

While Lightroom and Photoshop are both digital photography editing programs with a lot of functional crossover, they are designed to meet different needs and achieve different goals. On a high level, Lightroom is the best tool to manage and process the thousands of photos that live on your devices. Photoshop specializes in greater control to achieve more expansive edits that will help you make a few images look flawless. Sometimes, it’s not a case of which tool to use, but when to use each or both in the post-production process.

When to use Photoshop.

Whereas Lightroom is focused on organizing and processing photos, Photoshop ventures into image manipulation, creation, and enhancement. Photoshop is the best choice for images where you want pixel-level perfection. Photo re-touchers, fine artists, or compositing artists may start in Lightroom but will ultimately rely on Photoshop to do the bulk of the transformation. One way to think about it is that Lightroom stays true to photography, while Photoshop lets you create the images in your mind’s eye.

Retouching Photoshop features editing tools aimed at altering the look and content of a photo to a much greater degree than Lightroom. You can remove distracting objects with Content-Aware technology or combine multiple photos for a composite, creating surreal or photo-real images from multiple photos. Graphic designers can combine images with text and vector graphics, while illustrators can reimagine photos to make an entirely new creation. Photoshop filters, layers, masking, and transform controls are the basic building blocks for editing images.

Layers Like non-destructive Lightroom workflows, you can work in a non-destructive manner in Photoshop by taking advantage of Layers and Smart Objects. Build upon your image using layers and layer masking, which you can adjust and refine, knowing that the layers contain your image's original information.

You might have a layer for your color or white balance adjustment, a layer with a moody sky, a layer with a blue sky, and so on, all stacked on top of your original image. Layers can present a learning curve compared to Lightroom’s universal adjustment sliders, but they are excellent for managing post-production work.

Put them together for a dynamic duo.

Knowing the differences between Lightroom and Photoshop will help you pick the best image editor for a given project, but in many cases, it’s not an either-or decision. The two are designed to work seamlessly with each other. You can process a photo in Lightroom and then press command E or control E to pass it off to Photoshop, where you can fine-tune it.

Photoshop and Lightroom are both excellent photo editing software options, but they’re not the only ones out there. Photoshop includes Adobe Bridge, used to manage many file types, and Adobe Camera Raw, which features the same world-class image processing engine as Lightroom. Or you can take your edits completely mobile with Adobe Photoshop Express and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for mobile. Ultimately, the choice between Lightroom and Photoshop comes down to the goals of your creative projects and your personal preference. Frequently, the answer is to use both. Now that you know the differences between the two, you can design your workflow to create the photos you want. The best way to discover what works for you is to have fun and experiment until you find your perfect editing process.
