SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY College of education Preparing LEADERS to IMPACT a DIVERSE and EVOLVING World

Established in 1879, we were the first teacher preparation institute in Texas and under the leadership of Dean Stacey Edmonson, the college continues our legacy of preparing exceptional educators and our commitment to making a difference in the lives of students. The college is home to four departments; Counselor Education, Educational Leadership, Library Science & Technology, and the School of Teaching and Learning; service and research centers and a charter school. We offer a variety of programs including a bachelor’s degree in education, 13 master’s degrees, 6 doctoral degrees, 13 certificates and 5 certifications. Our specialized programs are accredited, recognized and award winning at the state and national level.

Making a Difference We are excited to announce the release of the 2022-2023 Annual Report from the College of Education, which highlights some of our most notable achievements of the year. As a college that strives to produce exceptional educators and professionals, we take pride in having graduated almost 750 students this year.

This not only further expands our Bearkat impact but also contributes to positive change in both the state and the nation.

Our commitment to integrity, innovation, inclusion, inquiry, and impact is unwavering and enables our faculty, staff, and students to make a positive difference in society and shape the future.

We are honored to share this year’s accomplishments with you and are grateful for your continued support as we work towards preparing today’s learners for tomorrow’s leadership. Together, we can make a difference and be the change the world needs.

Educational Leadership The Department of Educational Leadership prepares professionals to be leaders in public schools, institutions of higher education, and adult education programs. The programs focuses on the general principles and techniques of administering a wide variety of schools and other education organizations and facilities, and supervising educational personnel at the school or staff level.

Educators have the power to transform lives in and out of the classroom setting. From teachers to senior administrators, all those who work within education can inspire and guide future generations toward success in academics and their subsequent careers. To honor these change makers, Sam Houston State University’s College of Education (COE) recognizes educators who have made a significant contribution to the field in an awards ceremony each year with the Distinguished Educator of the Year award. This award is the highest honor the COE can bestow upon its alumni.

“The Distinguished Educator of the Year ceremony offers a unique opportunity for the college to honor several of its most accomplished alumni who have made a positive difference through careers in education,” Dean of the COE Stacey Edmonson said. “Our honorees represent urban, rural, and suburban communities and include all types of educators who have had distinguished careers as teachers, counselors, librarians, administrators and higher education professionals.”

This year, the College of Education is honoring five educators. The 2023 Distinguished Educators of the Year recipients are, Bill Chapman, Christopher Eckfor, Ann H. Lê, Heidi Sebren, , and Janice Taylor.

“Celebrating our distinguished alumni reminds us of just how important, and how impactful, educators are.

One of Isaac Newton’s most well-known quotes said, ‘If I have seen farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.’ Our distinguished educators are giants, people who have given their careers and dedicated their lives to be the shoulders that shape, guide and influence our children,” Edmonson said. “The Distinguished Educator of the Year award allows us as a college and community of educators to celebrate and honor these dedicated educational professionals and their contributions.”

Bill Chapman Dr. Bill Chapman, an SHSU alumni, serves as a superintendent of Palacios ISD and passed a $125 million bond to modernize the district’s school buildings. Chapman has received multiple awards, including the Region 13 Superintendent of the Year in 2018 and the Distinguished Library Service Award in 2017.

Christopher Eckford Dr. Christopher Eckford is the first black principal at his school. He earned his doctorate of Educational Leadership and led a Title I campus to earn an “A” rating from the state of Texas. His most rewarding work is when his former students come back to see him after they graduate.

Ann Lê Dr. Ann Lê, Special Education administrator at Tomball ISD, empowers students with disabilities, language barriers, and cultural differences by removing obstacles and promoting inclusive practices. Dr. Lê develops restorative toolkits and pursues research while serving on dissertation committees.

Heidi Sebren Heidi Sebren, an educator for 12 years, holds a Master’s of Curriculum Instruction from Sam Houston State University in 2015 and a certification in educational leadership in 2017. She implements Visual Data Walls and “Spring Training Week” to impact students’ learning and re-imagine learning outcomes.

Janice Taylor Dr. Janice Taylor, from a family of educators, uses her Doctorate of Education from Sam Houston State University to impact children’s lives. She currently serves as a clinical instructor and co-coordinator at Prairie View A&M University’s Educational Administration Program.

Danielle Laird, a wife and mother from Scarborough, Toronto, overcame doubts and challenges to pursue her passion for teaching. Despite being an older student, she graduated with a Bachelor of Education and a minor in special education. Balancing work, family, and school was tough, but Laird’s determination paid off. She now plans to pursue a master’s degree and become an instructional specialist.

Nationally Recognized For Educator Preparation Program The College of Education at Sam Houston State University has been awarded accreditation by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). This prestigious recognition places SHSU among the elite institutions committed to excellence in teacher preparation and educational leadership programs. In addition to the accreditation, SHSU received the 2023 Frank Murry Leadership Recognition for Continuous Improvement award.

CAEP accreditation is a rigorous and comprehensive process that evaluates teacher education programs across the nation.

The reviews occur every seven years and include multiple cycles of reports, data and other evidence, and an on-site review with interviews of stakeholders. SHSU’s on-site review included 22 interviews with 165 stakeholders over 3 days.

Reports and evidence for the accreditation review reflected SHSU’s 42 programs leading to Texas educator certification with enrollments totaling 1,493 undergraduate students and 522 graduate students.

The review concluded without any recommended areas for improvement or stipulations from the evaluation team. All initial and advanced certification programs earned full 7-year accreditation without any areas for improvement or stipulations. Based on the interviews, the evaluation team highlighted three strengths across our programs. First, students and graduates believe that faculty care about student success and work diligently to ensure each student is successful. Independent school district partners value their partnerships with the college, and the educators and students in their districts benefit from the partnerships. And finally, the college collects robust data from many sources, and uses the data in different ways to inform decisions and improve programs.

Dean of the College of Education, Stacey Edmonson, said “The College of Education is committed to ensuring that we offer the very best preparation possible so that our candidates have the skills, experiences and tools they need to have meaningful positive impact on the students and schools they serve,”. “The effort that goes into meeting national CAEP accreditation standards is an important part of that commitment, and we are proud of the CAEP Accreditation Council’s continued recognition of the high quality preparation we provide.”

SHSU’s dedication to producing top-tier educators has long been recognized by the education community, and CAEP accreditation solidifies this reputation. Graduates of the College of Education are known for their exceptional teaching abilities, leadership skills, and commitment to fostering educational excellence.

This designation opens doors for SHSU’s College of Education graduates, as CAEP accreditation is highly regarded by school districts, educational organizations, and employers nationwide. It ensures that SHSU graduates are well-prepared to meet the evolving challenges of modern education and to make a positive impact on the lives of the students they serve.

As SHSU continues to build on its legacy of excellence in education, the CAEP accreditation serves as a milestone achievement that reinforces the university’s dedication to shaping the future of education, one student at a time.

Research Center Established The College of Education (COE) at Sam Houston State University is making strides in advancing educational research with the establishment of its new Research Center. This center aims to provide comprehensive research and evaluation support to students, faculty, and external stakeholders, solidifying the university’s commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in education.

Located on the third floor of the Garrett Teacher Education Center, the COE Research Center is set to become a hub of scholarly activity. It offers a range of services to support individuals in designing contextually relevant studies that yield meaningful findings. This, in turn, can be instrumental in supporting decision-making processes, furthering program development, and contributing to the field of education.

One of the standout features of the COE Research Center is its dedication to methodological support, encompassing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Experts on hand are available to engage in discussions about various aspects of quantitative studies. They can suggest or critique research designs, recommend appropriate statistical analyses for addressing specific research questions, assist in interpreting analysis results, and even serve as sounding boards for fresh research ideas.

One of the unique aspects of the COE Research Center is its adaptability to the needs of the modern age. In addition to in-person meetings, the center provides convenient online consultations, making it accessible to individuals regardless of their location.

Dr. Stacey Edmonson, Dean of the College of Education, expressed enthusiasm about the center’s launch, stating, “The COE Research Center is a significant milestone for us. It underscores our commitment to fostering a culture of research and innovation within our college. Alternative Certification Program: Preparing Educators Now The need for qualified and passionate teachers is more pronounced than ever. To help meet this demand, Sam Houston State University’s College of Education has designed a dynamic Alternative Certification Program (ACP) for aspiring educators. This innovative initiative is designed to bridge the gap between passionate individuals and the need for teachers while ensuring the high standards of university teacher preparation.

SHSU’s ACP is designed for professionals with a bachelor’s degree in any field, who want to become certified teachers. This includes those currently working in classrooms without certification and for professionals who wish to transition into teaching, allowing them to combine their real-world expertise with the art of educating. The program provides flexibility by offering various start dates for the self-paced online modules. Completers finish the program with 12 hours of graduate course credit toward a master’s degree.

SHSU’s ACP provides a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with the state’s educational standards.

One of the program’s standout features is its emphasis on supporting the teacher candidate. Program participants are required to be employed by a district and teaching in the content area in which they are seeking certification. This immersive experience with the professional guidance of a university mentor not only enhances teaching skills but also cultivates a deep understanding of classroom dynamics.

Furthermore, SHSU’s College of Education supports its ACP candidates through a robust system of professional development, coaching, and continuous feedback. This holistic approach ensures that program graduates are equipped with the tools and knowledge to excel in their new careers.

In summary, the Sam Houston State University College of Education Alternative Certification Program is a vital pathway for those who aspire to make a difference in the lives of students. With its dedication to excellence, practical experience, and personalized support, the program is shaping the future of education by preparing passionate educators to thrive in the modern classroom.

Yearlong Residency In 2018, the College of Education (COE) at Sam Houston State University began piloting an immersive yearlong residency program designed to reshape the way aspiring educators prepare for their careers.

This innovative initiative proved very effective in providing students with a comprehensive, hands-on experience to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ultimately producing highly skilled and adaptable educators.

The Yearlong Residency (YLR) program, expanded to include all PK-3, EC-6 and 4-8 students this academic year. Under the guidance of mentor teachers and COE faculty, participants have the opportunity to develop their teaching skills, gain practical insights, and establish a deep connection with the students serve. Additionally, in order to attract students to their districts, many partner school districts are offering paid residencies.

This program’s structure is built on the principle of deliberate practice, with participants gradually assuming more responsibilities in the classroom as the year progresses.

It exposes them to a wide range of teaching scenarios, from diverse student populations to various subject areas, ensuring they are well-prepared for the multifaceted challenges of modern education.

Dr. Stacey Edmonson, Dean of the College of Education, believes that this program is a game-changer for teacher preparation. “Our Yearlong Residency Program represents a significant shift in the way we train our future educators. By spending an entire year in a classroom, students will develop a deep understanding of teaching and learning that goes beyond what can be achieved in a traditional program.

We’re confident that this will produce teachers who are not only highly skilled but also deeply committed to the profession.”

This innovative approach to teacher preparation aligns with the need for well prepared high quality teachers across the state.
