Is it Spring yet? What in the world is going on with the weather? Can’t tell if I should be breaking out the shorts or keeping the long-johns handy. Oh well! Life is a challenge.

PLACES MAKE A DIFFERENCE By: Marylee Forbis Bendig (’70) & Jerry Driggs (’69)

Do you remember the house in which you grew-up on the Southside of Columbus? Almost without excepPon, South High alumni like you have clear and compelling memories of these homes, right down to house numbers, neighbors’ names, phone numbers, and the daily hustle and bustle of the neighborhood. Probably most importantly you remember the people that lived with you, the events you shared in this house, and the memories of those Pmes that are as clear today as if they happened yesterday.

SHSAA is moving forward (in spite of the unpredictable weather). Here are some new developments. We bid “thanks for the service” to former board members Sandy Kipp, Jeanne and Steve Stoll and Peggy McCathran. We welcome new Board members and long Pme volunteers Dan Sells (’64) and Jerry Driggs (’69).

Jerry was elected Treasurer.

For many of us there was also the reacPon we had years later when you returned to the old neighborhood on a walk down memory lane and were taken back by how much everything had changed. The houses weren’t as big as you remember. The lawns weren’t as well kept, the paint wasn’t as fresh, and the neighborhood wasn’t the welcoming place you recall when bread and milk were delivered to your front porch, paperboys delivered the newspapers once in the morning and then again in the acernoon, back yard gardens produced vegetables and flowers, and kids played late into the night with only the street lights and an occasional porch light to break the night’s darkness.

For many, these return trips are sad reminders of a Pme, of people, and of experiences that are now just memories.

As we grow the associaPon we are pleased to integrate new volunteers who bring new perspecPves, new energy, and new skill sets!

On the other hand, there is the fascinaPng story of what happened at 477 E. Morrill Avenue that has impacted the lives of people for more than 70 years.

It is one house filled with the unique legacy of an excepPonal family, countless act of kindness, and a compelling example of paying it forward. It is a story worth telling.

SHSAA is in the final stages of receiving non-profit status from the IRS although we have several hurdles to cross. Our 2018 budget is in place and we are on target for a good year.

New online purchasing capabiliPes are in place. More than 50% of our Pcket purchases for the Oldies Dance were made online as well as a c o n s i d e r a b l e n u m b e r o f membership renewals. We now have 463 members. Thanks to all members. Let us know how we can improve our services to you.

All scholarship applicaPons are now processed online. We are scheduled to make nearly $4,000 in awards this year.

Marylee Forbis Bendig (’70) and her two siblings grew up in this house, which her parents, Hazel (’42) and Ivan Forbis bought in 1945 when Ivan returned from serving in the Army Air Corp in World War II. The couple married days before Ivan was deployed in 1941. They were apart the first three years of their marriage but were commiied to each other for a lifePme. The house they bought when he returned from the war in 1945 is at 477 E. Morrill Ave. between Parsons Ave. and Ann Street. When they bought it, the house was in a residenPal neighborhood in the midst of a thriving small business district. The Cook & Son Funeral home, the Dairy Queen, the Columbus Fire House #14, Nagy Shoe Repair, H&S Hardware, Cussin & Fern, Sandy’s Drive In, Lawson’s Milk, and the Markison Theatre, were all within easy walking distance of their house. 477 E. Morrill was surrounded by the homes of hard working families raising their children and looking out for each other.

Carolyn Pennell Kennison was born on August 4, 1932, in Columbus, Ohio. She grew up on Harmon Avenue and graduated from South High School in 1950. She died last year at the age of 85. Her personality was rooted in values and a zest for life that touched the lives of everyone she met.

One of her four sons, Michael Case, wrote a moving recollecGon of her life in her obituary, which he shared with us at the Gme of her death. When I first read it, I felt; “I never met her, but I wish I had!”

Many of you will recognize these same traits and values in people you know; special Southend people whose unique personaliGes helped make you the person you are today.

She was a woman with many qualiGes that enriched the lives of others. Long before it was the norm, she balanced work, family, friends, music, culture, and causes.

Michael described his mother as a woman who led “a vibrant life full of love and laughter, a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a loyal and giving friend.”

He went on to say, “Her infecGous love of good music and a joke was a lifeGme gi^ to her family and to everyone with whom she worked and socialized. Mom loved her crossword puzzles, true crime shows, her cats, her dear friends, and a great meal. Like her mother, she was an avid reader and lover of language.”

“She was a dedicated working mom from an early age while at the same Gme teaching her sons manners and compassion, love of life and sharing her great sense of humor and fun.

Mom loved to dance to good soul music, loved to be with friends, and loved the conGnuous houseful of her kids' friends watching movies and hanging out.”

Michael also described a life that included her love of internaGonal cultural with close friends in Brazil, England, France, Canada and Germany with whom she kept in touch throughout her life. For a Gme, she lived in Quebec, Canada and Sao Paulo, Brazil, supporGng her husband’s engineering business. She made friends easily and assimilated into each new culture.

Michael proudly reflected, “Mom was a hip, hip lady ahead of her Gme. At 75-years old she decided to learn to play electric bass guitar and played along with her favorite B.B. King and other blues records. I think the key to her inner freedom was her exposure to R&B music somewhere in the south end of Columbus back in the late ‘40s-early ‘50s.”

Michael said it best as he concluded the obituary with these memories. “Mom was a role model as a self-made woman, with great class, style, and integrity. Mom spent her last years quietly enjoying her grandsons growing into manhood and acGng as a rock of good common sense to her family. She worked to maintain her independent living for as long as possible and never resigned to illness.”

The Graumlich Family has been a prominent fixture

in the Southside of Columbus for more than 100 years. The family business, Graumlich Funeral Service, has provided care, comfort and services to thousands of individuals, and families coping with the death of a loved one or friend.

Located on South High Street near Markison Avenue, their funeral home has grown and improved to meet the changing needs of the community. Their Ges to South High School and to the larger Southside community are deep and strong.

For the past 60 years, August (Augie) Graumlich, 1950 South High School graduate, and his wife Shirley have been the guiding force of the funeral business and the biggest influence on the lives of their four children – the fourth generaGon to assume the challenge of carrying the business forward. Today, daughter Andrea Graumlich, fourth generaGon licensed funeral director fills the primary leadership role for the business, oversees daily operaGons, and is the key liaison with each family they serve.

It's time to put some bark in the South High School Alumni Association by being a Bulldog Volunteer!

The SHSAA is arguably the biggest and best high school alumni group in the City of Columbus and the state of Ohio.

Our Southside heritage of honor, pride, and values are the primary reasons we have grown and why we succeed where other groups have failed. As a long time volunteer, I’m personally asking for you to consider helping in any of the following ways.

1. Volunteer on the day of our events. There are many tasks we need help with. They range from taking tickets; to setting-up and cleaning-up the venue; to preparing food; to organizing the 50/50; to behind-the-scenes jobs.

2. Provide articles or suggest ideas for our newsletter.

Submit articles that you would like to see in the newsletter or suggest topics that we can develop.

3. Contact potential members and promote joining SHSAA. Help us get new members or secure renewals.

4. Consider serving on the Board of Directors. We are open to considering all qualified candidates to serve on the Board.

5. Provide professional services or skills that you may have. Services such as: legal support, marketing, fundraising, membership support, or customer service.

As the SHSAA looks ahead to 2019 and beyond, we are challenged to continue to be relevant to all South High alumni.

We need to be strong and stand in unity to maintain the Bulldog Nation, which proudly represents South High School and the

Southside of Columbus.

I had the good fortune to speak with Andrea in preparing this ar4cle. Her genuine warmth and character as well as management acumen are a reflec4on of the strong sense of values and priori4es that are a part of the Graumlich tradi4on.

She was quick to point out that everything she has learned about caring, understanding, and helping people cope with the loss of a loved one has come from life-lessons taught and lived by her parents. It took only minutes to sense how deeply Andrea Graumlich Andrea cares about what she does, her sense of pride in carrying-on the tradi4on her family has established over the years, and her sense of responsibility to serve the community. Andrea is commiCed to con4nuing the proud Graumlich tradi4on.

Augie was a member of the 1948 football team that defeated Aquinas 19-0. The game football and a team picture are displayed in a prominent place in the funeral home. That game ended 31 consecu4ve losses for the South High Bulldogs. He also served for many years as the president of the South High Alumni Associa4on. He is always ready to spin tales of by-gone 4mes and describes his 4me at South as an anchor in his life.

Andrea described the warmth and connec4ons she sees among the people aCending funerals whose families are rooted in the Southside. She described a special bond among family and friends, especially those who have moved away and are returning to celebrate the life of a loved one. Warm embraces, shared memories of school buddies that have not seen each other for years, and the unbroken bonds of friendships established many years ago are traits she connects to the Southside and righMully so! She knows from firsthand experience how important those bonds are.

I asked her about paying it forward and if that is something that she consciously aCempts to do. Without the slightest hesita4on she said, “I don’t know any other way. I think it is in our family DNA. My parents passed on to our genera4on what had been passed to them and I am passing it on in everything I do. Service, trust, caring and respect are the giWs I’ve been given and it’s my responsibility to do nothing less.”

As we were finishing our conversa4on Andrea handed me a short list. “My father asked me to have you include this in your ar4cle. It is his Top Ten list of advice he has for today’s South High School students.”

1. Set goals.

2. Have pride in yourself and appreciate the value of your educa:on.

3. Respect your teachers and your classmates.

4. Do not be a bully. It hurts the psyche.

5. Need a friend? Be a friend.

6. Be on :me for class and events. This shows you are dependable.

7. Don’t make excuses for geKng into trouble.

Acknowledge your mistake. Learn from your experience. Promise to do beOer. 8. Set an example of leadership. Learn to listen. Listen more, talk less.

Michael proudly reflected, “Mom was a hip, hip lady ahead of her Gme. At 75-years old she decided to learn to play electric bass guitar and played along with her favorite B.B. King and other blues records. I think the key to her inner freedom was her exposure to R&B music somewhere in the south end of Columbus back in the late ‘40s-early ‘50s.”

Michael said it best as he concluded the obituary with these memories. “Mom was a role model as a self-made woman, with great class, style, and integrity. Mom spent her last years quietly enjoying her grandsons growing into manhood and acGng as a rock of good common sense to her family. She worked to maintain her independent living for as long as possible and never resigned to illness.”

The Graumlich Family has been a prominent fixture

in the Southside of Columbus for more than 100 years. The family business, Graumlich Funeral Service, has provided care, comfort and services to thousands of individuals, and families coping with the death of a loved one or friend.

Located on South High Street near Markison Avenue, their funeral home has grown and improved to meet the changing needs of the community. Their Ges to South High School and to the larger Southside community are deep and strong.

For the past 60 years, August (Augie) Graumlich, 1950 South High School graduate, and his wife Shirley have been the guiding force of the funeral business and the biggest influence on the lives of their four children – the fourth generaGon to assume the challenge of carrying the business forward. Today, daughter Andrea Graumlich, fourth generaGon licensed funeral director fills the primary leadership role for the business, oversees daily operaGons, and is the key liaison with each family they serve.

The SHSAA is arguably the biggest and best high school alumni group in the City of Columbus and the state of Ohio.

Our Southside heritage of honor, pride, and values are the primary reasons we have grown and why we succeed where other groups have failed. As a long time volunteer, I’m personally asking for you to consider helping in any of the following ways.

1. Volunteer on the day of our events. There are many tasks we need help with. They range from taking tickets; to setting-up and cleaning-up the venue; to preparing food; to organizing the 50/50; to behind-the-scenes jobs.

2. Provide articles or suggest ideas for our newsletter.

Submit articles that you would like to see in the newsletter or suggest topics that we can develop.

3. Contact potential members and promote joining SHSAA. Help us get new members or secure renewals.

4. Consider serving on the Board of Directors. We are open to considering all qualified candidates to serve on the Board.

5. Provide professional services or skills that you may have. Services such as: legal support, marketing, fundraising, membership support, or customer service.

As the SHSAA looks ahead to 2019 and beyond, we are challenged to continue to be relevant to all South High alumni.

Is it Spring yet? What in the world is going on with the weather? Can’t tell if I should be breaking out the shorts or keeping the long-johns handy. Oh well! Life is a challenge.

Do you remember the house in which you grew-up on the Southside of Columbus? Almost without excepPon, South High alumni like you have clear and compelling memories of these homes, right down to house numbers, neighbors’ names, phone numbers, and the daily hustle and bustle of the neighborhood. Probably most importantly you remember the people that lived with you, the events you shared in this house, and the memories of those Pmes that are as clear today as if they happened yesterday.

SHSAA is moving forward (in spite of the unpredictable weather). Here are some new developments. We bid “thanks for the service” to former board members Sandy Kipp, Jeanne and Steve Stoll and Peggy McCathran. We welcome new Board members and long Pme volunteers Dan Sells (’64) and Jerry Driggs (’69).

Jerry was elected Treasurer.

For many of us there was also the reacPon we had years later when you returned to the old neighborhood on a walk down memory lane and were taken back by how much everything had changed. The houses weren’t as big as you remember. The lawns weren’t as well kept, the paint wasn’t as fresh, and the neighborhood wasn’t the welcoming place you recall when bread and milk were delivered to your front porch, paperboys delivered the newspapers once in the morning and then again in the acernoon, back yard gardens produced vegetables and flowers, and kids played late into the night with only the street lights and an occasional porch light to break the night’s darkness.

For many, these return trips are sad reminders of a Pme, of people, and of experiences that are now just memories.

As we grow the associaPon we are pleased to integrate new volunteers who bring new perspecPves, new energy, and new skill sets!

On the other hand, there is the fascinaPng story of what happened at 477 E. Morrill Avenue that has impacted the lives of people for more than 70 years.

It is one house filled with the unique legacy of an excepPonal family, countless act of kindness, and a compelling example of paying it forward. It is a story worth telling.

SHSAA is in the final stages of receiving non-profit status from the IRS although we have several hurdles to cross. Our 2018 budget is in place and we are on target for a good year.

New online purchasing capabiliPes are in place. More than 50% of our Pcket purchases for the Oldies Dance were made online as well as a c o n s i d e r a b l e n u m b e r o f membership renewals. We now have 463 members. Thanks to all members. Let us know how we can improve our services to you.

All scholarship applicaPons are now processed online. We are scheduled to make nearly $4,000 in awards this year.

Marylee Forbis Bendig (’70) and her two siblings grew up in this house, which her parents, Hazel (’42) and Ivan Forbis bought in 1945 when Ivan returned from serving in the Army Air Corp in World War II. The couple married days before Ivan was deployed in 1941. They were apart the first three years of their marriage but were commiied to each other for a lifePme. The house they bought when he returned from the war in 1945 is at 477 E. Morrill Ave. between Parsons Ave. and Ann Street. When they bought it, the house was in a residenPal neighborhood in the midst of a thriving small business district. The Cook & Son Funeral home, the Dairy Queen, the Columbus Fire House #14, Nagy Shoe Repair, H&S Hardware, Cussin & Fern, Sandy’s Drive In, Lawson’s Milk, and the Markison Theatre, were all within easy walking distance of their house. 477 E. Morrill was surrounded by the homes of hard working families raising their children and looking out for each other.
