SHSAA Scholarships Top $60,000 By: Carol Wolfenbarger (’61)

A top priority of SHSAA is to recognize the

talent and achievements of seniors who are gradua8ng from South or seniors who are rela8ves of ac8ve SHSAA members. One way we do this is to award financial scholarships to qualified seniors planning to a/end college. With this year’s awards, SHSAA has provided more than $60,000 in scholarship support over the last several years. I am pleased to announce that this year we have awarded five scholarships totaling $5,000. These awards were presented at ceremonies in mid-June to the winning applicants. Two of the recipients are high school seniors who are family members of ac8ve SHSAA members and the other three are gradua8ng seniors at South High School in the class of 2018. SHSAA’s scholarship commi/ee members are Carol Wolfenbarger, Casey Clark, Ruby Arnold, Dana Jenkins, Dan Sells, and Sharon Selby. Applicants completed an online applica8on including informa8on regarding academic performance, par8cipa8on in extracurricular ac8vity, the status of their college applica8on, and a summary of their college goals.

Applicants also submi/ed an essay that included highlights of their high school accomplishments, their college priori8es, and their career plans. We were par8cularly interested in how they define success as they look forward to the next phase of their lives. The results were so impressive that we changed our plans to only award three scholarships and instead we awarded five. In addi8on, we awarded a special Cer(ficate of Achievement to Ricardo Felix, 2018 SHS senior class president and re c i p i e nt o f a p re s8 g i o u s G ate s Founda,on Scholar Award; and an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. 87-year-old Veteran Gets Diploma 7 Decades After Being Forced to Drop Out of South High School (By: Haley Nelson - Reprinted from WSYX/WTTE website) -- At 87 years old, military veteran Robert Quincel is an unlikely person to be geKng a high school diploma. But, even more unlikely is his journey to get that diploma.

Bulldog Reunions - Summer 2018 Informa(on compiled by: Casey (Oddi) Clark (’64) This a busy summer for SHS class reunions. The following informaYon has been provided by class representaYves. Each of these classes is planning to a`end the Annual SHSAA Picnic and Car Show on Sunday, September 16th, 2018 as a part of their reunion acYviYes.

1943 - 75 Years

1958 - 60 Years

For Quincel, it's been hurdle aSer hurdle. Born in the southend of Columbus, Robert was one of 11 kids and had to stop going to South High School in Columbus City Schools.

The 75th class reunion of the South High School Class of 1943 was held in June of 2018 at the Barcelona Restaurant on East WhiKer Street. A full review of their event can be found on the previous page.

"My mother got hurt and I had to go to work," he said. Then, he was draSed by the Army to fight in Korea.

All remaining members of the class of ‘43 have been made honorary members of SHSAA. They are:

"I think I earned it from having hard knocks," he said.

"They found out I had a heart murmur," he said. He had already signed up for the Navy before this. So, he spent Yme in the reserves, did drills for the Navy, then started a family. Robert and his wife, Marjorie, now have three kids and 12 grandchildren. All of them have diplomas, except for Robert. "It really does mean something, especially aSer all these years," he said. His daughter learned about legislaYon that allows military veterans to get their diplomas. It allows school districts like Columbus to give out an honorary diploma, because many people were draSed while sYll in school for World War II, Korea, or Vietnam. "I just thought I should see if I could get one," he said. He said they sent in the paperwork, but there was another hurdle. "The paperwork that was sent, got lost," he said. They tried again and finally learned Robert would be geKng his diploma. But then, there was another issue, the couple had no way of geKng to the board meeYng. So, ABC 6/FOX 28 gave them a ride, in Yme for Quincel to receive the honor.

Robert Quincel

Some family made it just in Yme where Robert got to say 'thank you.’ "Your heart will never let you down if you keep on trying, educaYon...is the best thing you can get, thank you," he said to the crowd. The veteran hopes his story reminds everyone to keep studying and keep trying.

It’s August. How are we doing?

Jim Driggs (’68) SHSAA President

What happened to July? And for that ma:er, what about April, May and June ?It feels like it was just yesterday that our associaMon was laying out our goals for the new year. Yikes. Where does the Mme go? We will soon gather at Hoover Y-Park for our annual SHSAA Picnic and Car Show and that will mean that another summer will be making way for autumn. I encourage all of you to make your plans now to a:end. You can purchase your Mckets online at our website or send us a check with the order form that is in this issue. This is our largest fundraising event each year and our success depends on a good turnout. Speaking of success, here is a brief progress report that highlights some of our achievements so far this year. Our board members, volunteers, and alumni members have been busy. • SHSAA has 427 alumni members and 23 business members for a total membership of 450 Bulldogs! Thus far in 2018, 50 NEW members have joined SHSAA. • SHSAA has exceeded its revenue goals for the first half of the year while spending less than we budgeted. • SHSAA provided five $1,000 scholarships to a group of deserving 2018 graduates. This is $2,000 more than we budgeted. SHSAA has provided more than $60,000 in scholarship support to date. • SHSAA has applied for tax exempt status. IRS approval is expected yet this year. • Twenty-three (23) business sponsors currently provide financial support for our newsle:er and website. We publish more than 250 copies of the newsle:er each issue and had more than 5,000 website visits in the last 12 months. Thank you for your conMnued support. With your help we will keep the momentum moving forward.

South High Alumni Remembered Don R. Frank Scholarship Award By: Dana Jenkins (’63) A $1,000 memorial dona0on in honor of the late Don R. Frank (’60) was made by his sister Sharon (Frank) Harman (’63) to the South High School Alumni Associa0on for presenta0on to a deserving graduate in 2018. SHSAA awards scholarships to both gradua0ng South High School seniors as well as to gradua0ng seniors related to ac0ve SHSAA members. Sharon and her son Paul recently presented the Don R. Frank Scholarship A w a r d t o C a n a l Winchester High School senior, Audrey Jenkins, granddaughter of SHSAA Board member Dana (Carter) Jenkins (’63). Audrey graduated from Canal Winchester High School where she balanced her academics, varsity sports, and working for a local veterinarian, while maintaining an impressive GPA. Audrey will aQend Columbus State Community College beginning in this fall. She is majoring in biology and playing volleyball for the school's team. ATer comple0ng two years, she will transfer to a four-year college to pursue the field of den0stry and her Bachelor's Degree. Audrey said, “I feel extremely honored to receive this scholarship, especially because I've known Mrs. Harman and her son for several years. Paul has been the sports announcer at all of our high school games and Mrs. Harman and my grandmother both graduated from South High School in 1963. So, these two connec0ons make this a very, very special award.”

South High School Class of ’43 Celebrates 75th Reunion By: Dana Jenkins (’63)

Reprinted Courtesy of 10TV Columbus, Ohio

A recent party at the Barcelona Restaurant on East Whi>er Street is one that surely deserves special aBenCon.

By: Maureen Kocot (TV10)

This year, a group of 10 classmates, came together to celebrate their 75th year aNer graduaKng South High in 1943. Some traveled from as far as Arizona and Tennessee, and others came from the Columbus area and other Ohio ciKes.

In 1943, America was at war, Franklin D. Roosevelt was president, and Norma Jacks, then Norma Klinges, was falling in love. "I remember our senior prom because I eventually married the young man who took me," she said.

Norma (Klinges) Jacks and Donald Lund are the r e m a i n i n g r e u n i o n commiTee members who stay in touch with their classmates. They use to meet every 10 years, then

The Columbus South High School Class of 1943 came together in June at Barcelona restaurant to celebrate a lifeKme of friendship.

Donald Lund other. They bring their old y e a r b o o k s , take photos a n d t e a s e each other, just as the rest of us do.

Each of their reunions has been at the B a r c e l o n a , where they share school m e m o r i e s , catch up on each other's lives, and enjoy another dinner together. With everyone now in their 90's, Ms. Jacks announced this will be their last reunion….maybe. Bravo!! to the Class of 1943!

To Steele High School of Dayton goes the blame for the disastrous part of the 1922 season for South High School. ANer opening the season with a game at Delaware which South won 7 to 0, things looked bright, but rough sledding was ahead of the team.

"Everyone that I know that has heard about this has said how could you sKll be geMng together aNer 75 years? It's not possible," said Jacks.

Steele High of Dayton was met next and the Blue and Gray lads suffered an overwhelming defeat by the score of 112 to 0.

Jacks and Don Lund are the only two surviving members of the original high school reunion commiTee. They use to get together once every 10 years, then every five. "As we all got older and more ancient, we decided we beTer go one year at a Kme.” said Lund. The group lost four classmates this year alone. "It happens," said Lund. "And we keep going.”

The team returned home a bunch of cripples and with their morale shaken to the limit. A few of the players were so badly hurt they had to be carried to the train. Others had been so injured that they did not recover in the remainder of the season.

Coach Bash thought it Kme to do something. He called a meeKng of the players in the auditorium and a general talk was held and a vote was taken whether to give up for the rest of the season, or fight it out, in spite of the poor support given them.

Norma Jacks every 5 years, then changed it to every year - and sKll, everyone treasurers the Kme they get to visit with each

Teamwork

The group flipped through old yearbooks and newspaper clippings, revealing photos of teenagers with their whole lives ahead of them. Jacks said that 75 years later, it's a blessing for old friends to come together. "Most of us had to have somebody bring us, but we're here." The class of '43 grew up together in uncertain Kmes. Two members seated at the table survived the BaTle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion. Most of the graduates married. They had children, grandchildren, and now, greatgrandchildren. Lund and Jacks said they do their best to navigate a world gone digital. "So much more is automated, the cell phones," said Lund. "I don't feel connected. They've lost me," laughed Jacks. Once a year, there is no mistaking the connecKon between classmates who share a lifeKme of friendships. "I think that everyone that's here today feels that they're coming together with treasures,” said Lund. Ms. Jacks told the group the 75th reunion would be the last. "You said that last year," heckled one classmate, followed by a peal of laughter in the room.

The players were unanimous in wanKng to finish the season. Each player pledged himself to be on hand at every pracKce. South ended the season playing for the city league championship against North and holding them to a 0 to 0 <e in a sea of mud and water, finishing second in the InterscholasKc season. That lesson is teamwork. In short a football team is successful only if its teamwork is successful. Chuck Sailor (’64) found this in the 1932 South High School yearbook.
