From the President I have always had a special place in my heart for sheep people. This year on July 23rd I was involved in a work accident at the hog farm. I had my right knee in an immobilizer for 3 weeks. The Ohio State Fair happened during these three weeks and with many of sheep friendly folks, Marilyn and I were able to get our sheep ready, hauled, and shown Great friends are greatly appreciated and hard to find.

There are many events for Shropshires at the 2010 NAILE. Friday, November 12th is the first events with he Youth Sheep Lead and Market Lamb Showmanship both in the evening. On Saturday morning November 11th will be the Sale of the Stars Female Sale., an excellent place to buy high quality Shropshire Females.

Saturday afternoon we will have some youth activities and the Market Lamb Show will last all day Our National Shropshire junior Show will take place on Sunday November 14th probably after lunch. Wednesday evening, November 17th is the National Shropshire Board Meeting. Thursday morning is the National Open Class Shropshire Show. At 1:00 on Thursday afternoon is the Annual Meeting of the Members, which is a luncheon. It’s a great time to socialize and learn about our active association.

This is the 9th year for our Futurity Program. For the 9th year in a row it has grown.

Shropshire breeders nominated 109 ewe

lambs and I currently have 30 ewe lambs that junior exhibitors have submitted point cards.

This is the 1st year for our yearling ewe futurity and we have 15 yearling ewes that young people have submitted point cards.

The winners will be announced during the National Junior Show at NAILE. The futurity program has been a great boost to our junior activities.

Shropshires continue to have the largest shows at many state fairs.

At the Ohio State Fair for the 3rd year in a row Shropshires had the largest number of entries in our open show as well as the Junior Show. At the Indiana State Fair, Shropshires also had the largest open and junior shows.

At the Ohio State Fair, Taylor “Darby” High exhibited the Champion Ram which was named Supreme over all breeds. Alyssa Pence’s yearling ewe was named Reserve Champion Female over all breeds. Congratulations to these young ladies for putting Shropshires in the limelight.

Our junior ambassador for 2010 Hallie Walker of Mass. Has been doing a great job of promoting Shropshires. Hopefully more people will get a chance to meet her at Louisville this year.

I’m looking forward to the Shropshire activities at NAILE, seeing and talking to as many Shropshire enthusiasts as possible.

From the Secretary Some areas of the country have seen some pretty dry weather. Others have been rather wet. Most have been hot. We are getting pretty dry here on our hill in Massachusetts. One well on the farm is already dry so we find we have to be very careful with the second one. We expected the rain from Hurricane Earl to help us out a little but he tracked further east to be of much benefit to us. So we’ll make the trip to the Laundromat with the wash to try to help our cause!

The spring and summer of Shropshire 2010 have shown a number of positive things. The Classic was a good sale and so was the Spectacular. The All American Junior Show was a rousing success. We have a brand new ambassador in Hallie Walker. There continues to be an active buzz about Shropshires. Numbers of registrations and transfers are very similar to that of 2009. The Ewe Lamb Futurity is showing excellent participation. Check the Shropshire website for an update on the standings every two weeks.The new Yearling Ewe Futurity program is off to a successful start with 23 yearling ewes nominated.

The fall Shropshire season is approaching quickly. Many of the state fairs have taken place with still a few coming up. We look forward to Louisville time in November.

The Stars of Louisville Sale will be the first sale of the day on Saturday, November 13.

We expect 20 elite Shropshire ewes to go across the sale block. Our junior activities follow that afternoon. The Junior Show will be the next day where Shrops should show third in the schedule. The Open Show will take place on Thursday followed by the Annual Meeting.

Many thanks go to all of the supporters of the All American Junior Show. One hundred sixty two Shropshires were shown on that day.The support crew in Michigan did an ad_______ PAGE 6

mirable job putting that event together.

And from the registration desk: The workload has slowed some as most people have registered all of most of their lambs.

There have been a few transfers for the Louisville Junior show. I appreciate breeders’ patience while I try to clear up confusion on the registry applications. Again, remember that you must be the current registered owner of the dam if you want her lamb(s) to be registered in your name.

Sometimes people will transfer ewe lambs or yearling ewes to another family member so it can be shown by them but often the sheep are not transferred back. The lambs you want to be in your name may read as being registered to a one of the youngsters or a brother or sister. The registration process isn’t as malleable as you might think so the registered owner of the dam when she lambs WILL be the owner of her offspring!

The only way to change the ownership is to transfer the dam or the lamb. So to save some time, check the back side of your ewe’s papers to make sure the applicant to register her lamb is the current owner of the mother.

And on a more personal note: In 2009, some one asked me if planning the 125th Anniversary celebration was like planning a wedding. At the time, I had no answer for that question. But know I can say yes to that.

Our daughter Karin will be married on October 30 to a wonderful young man. Our family has been busy with the arrangements since early spring. And I can safely say it is like having the 125th all over again! I appreciate your patience while I am a little distracted at this time. We are looking forward to a wonderful day!

Come, make the trip to Louisville If you are wondering what to do with your free time in November, you should make the trip to Louisville, Ky.! If you have attended before, you’ll know about all of the wonderful things to see at the Exposition Center. If you’ve never been, it’s time you went! The dates this year are Nov. 6-19. Specifically, sheep are on exhibit starting the 12th. All of the major breeds and a few of the minor breeds will have important competitions.

This year, NAILE once again, hosts the National Shropshire Open Show and all of its associated events. The kick-off to the Shropshire activities will be on Saturday, Nov. 13 with the 2nd Annual Stars of Louisville Sale in the sale arena. The junior activities will follow in the afternoon with a probable quiz bowl, scholarship award and refreshments.Wethers meeting the Shropshire breed classifications will be shown in the mid afternoon.

The National Junior Shropshire Show will run on Sunday, Nov. 14 as the third breed of the day in the north ring. Young John Mrozinski of Brookings, S.D. will be sorting the entries. ASRA and NAILE offer $2075 in premiums. The ASRA is also providing extra funds to provide an additional ewe lamb class if necessary. Junior exhibitors will then proceed to the showmanship arena where Ted Coil of Fortville, Ind. will evaluate the show skills. At the conclusion of the junior breeding sheep shows, the champion shropshire ewe will be eligible to compete for the $1000 Supreme Champion Ewe Award.

If you are in Louisville for the sheep duration, you’ll have a couple of days to view other breeds or species shows as the open show is held later in the week on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. Another excellent Shropshire entry is expected. Mike Anderson of Paxton, Ill. will serve as the official judge. Following the show, Shropshire exhibitors, breeders and spectators will assemble for the Annual Meeting of the Members in a location to be announced, mostly likely in a nearby meeting room.

Other attractions at NAILE while you are enjoying the sheep events include the championship rodeo finals in Freedom Hall. This takes place on Thursday, Nov. 11 through Saturday, Nov. 13. You may also be interested in taking in the beef cattle shows in Freedom Hall and Broadbent Arena.

The day long wether show takes place on Saturday, also. On Thursday, after the Shropshire meeting, you might have an interest in attending the Sale of Champions in the East Hall. Here the junior exhibitors of the champion and reserve champion market steers, wethers and hogs are sold at auction. It is an exciting event to see. Don’t forget the Country Store where you may purchase sheep supplies and equipment, aluminum trailers, roping saddles, silver jewelry, cattle chutes, catfish and pork sandwiches to name a few.

Minutes of Board Meeting American Shropshire Registry Association Board of Directors Meeting June 18, 2010, Springfield, IL The meeting was called to order at 7:09 p.m. Roll call was taken. Present were Mark McCabe, Darrell Dockter, Re Call, Jim Percival, Norm Jackson, Brad Slutz, Gary Brockmann, Carol Rueber, Bob Johnson, and Tim Roberts.

Becky Peterson was present as Secretary/ Treasurer. Bob Dinsmore, Sandy Cross, Ralph Lovely, Bill Seals and Cody Hiemke were absent. Cody had sent his report previously.

Steve and Rinda Maddox were also present to represent the Voice.

Secretary’s report: Becky had previously submitted the minutes from the November 2009 meeting in Louisville. After a brief review, Bob Johnson moved to accept them and Gary Brockmann seconded. The report was accepted.

Re also noted that the minutes of the October 2009 teleconference had not been approved. Becky is to submit these to the Board for review and approval.

Treasurer’s Report: Becky had previously also emailed a profit and loss report for 2010 to June 13. Becky noted that all work and advertising has been invoiced but may not have been paid. Becky noted that she has now put all of the active members into the accounting program so there is a tracking method for accounts receivable in addition to the one in the registry software. The amount of $385 was sold in shirts, etc. at the Classic so there is income for 2010 for the 125th. The ambassador fund has had no activity in 2010 so it does not “appear” as expense or income in this report. There was a question of whether the previous ambassador had requested any compensation from 2009. There would be $405 available.

The AAJS shows and income of $630 for the donations promised in May at the Classic.

The Futurity shows $1360 from nominations at the Classic. $220 has been collected for yearling ewe nominations for this year in addition to the $240 paid to nominate the ewe _______ PAGE 8

lambs at the NAILE Sale for a total of $460 to fund the 2010 Yearling Ewe Futurity program.

LMF is negative as the 2009 premium was paid in January. Becky reported that the accountant is working on the 990 form for the non-profit tax return. Travel expense showed $1040.61 which includes airfare to Louisville meeting and Illinois and also a motel in Eaton, OH. Some of these have not been paid as they have not yet been approved. The regional youth support so far has amounted to $300 which was the amount sent to the Midwest Junior Preview Show in Missouri from the Southwest District. Other youth support should go to Ohio, Indiana, New England, Illinois, and California (for NAILE Ewe Lamb class) for a total of $1800. Total profit was $2419.86 as of June 13.

Balance sheet shows a total asset $43554, very similar to 2009.

Jim Percival moved and Darrell Dockter seconded to accept the treasurer’s report.

Committee Reports: Youth – Tim Roberts reported on the Ambassador Program. There were two very capable applicants. Hallie Walker was chosen and will be arriving in Springfield and is eager to get to work. The youth committee had discussed some new approaches to activities.There will be a fitting clinic at the Spectacular directed to the finer points of finishing heads and legs. A Skillathon is planned for Louisville to go along with the Quiz bowl.Tim also reported on the Midwest Preview Show. There were 71 exhibitors and 230 head. Shropshires had 21 head exhibited which amounted to the 6th largest show and the fourth highest payout of the 14 breeds participating. This show will be held on the same weekend in 2011. Perhaps it could be used as the Midwest Regional Junior Shropshire Show. Tim moved and Bob Johnson seconded that this be done next year. There was no discussion. Motion passed.

Futurity- Mark McCabe reported that there were 68 lambs nominated at the Classic. More are expected at the National Sale and Sedalia.There are 23 ewes are nominated for the yearling ewe program for this year.

LEGAL NOTICE ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS Official notice is hereby given to all members of the American Shropshire Registry Association, Inc. that the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Members will be held on Thursday, November 18 at 1 P.M. in Louisville. The purpose of said meeting is to hear and approve the reports of the President and Secretary/Treasurer to ratify the acts of the Board of Directors since the last annual meeting of the members; to act on any old or new business which may be brought before the meeting; and to elect directors for districts having directors whose terms expire in 2010.

Article VI, Section 2 of the By Laws allows for the direct election of a director for a district if that district has an active, recognized Shropshire association.

Directors whose terms will expire at this time are: Darrell Dockter – Northwest District (Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho & Wyoming) Cody Hiemke – Wisconsin/Michigan District Brad Slutz – Illinois District Each membership in the American Shropshire Registry Association, Inc. is entitled to one vote at the Annual Meeting of the Members. Such vote must be cast in person. Those members attending the Annual Meeting shall constitute a quorum for the purpose of transacting the business of the Association. All members are encouraged to attend and participate.

Becky Peterson, Secretary soring the nomination fees for the Ohio exhibitors. Four Ohio youngsters took advantage of this. Then Jim Percival inquired about adding the Great Lakes Sale in Wooster, Ohio as a sale to nominate and purchase Futurity Ewe Lambs. After short discussion, Jim moved and Tim Roberts seconded to add The Great Lakes sale as a source of Futurity Ewe Lambs for a one year trial in 2011 and then to evaluate the participation at the June 2012 meeting.The motion was approved with all votes in favor. Mark and Jim will make sure that there is someone at that sale in 2011 to record the nominations and the scrapie tag numbers.

Scholarship – Mark has received four scholarship applications. He, Becky and Tim will evaluate them and choose two students to receive $400 each this year. Hopefully, these will be awarded in full this fall at the youth activities in Louisville.

Budget and Finance – Re Call said that Becky had covered everything in the treasurers report. Mark noted that the committee does work hard to evaluate and keep track of the budget.

Voice and Promotion- Darrell commented

that the Voice contains lots of advertising and the breeders help to support the magazine.

Rinda noted that Steve works hard for collecting ads. Steve has been very successful in getting the cover ads sold.The bulk rate mailing was compared to the first class method and it was noted that $200-300 was saved in postage but that the delivery times varied considerably. A vote was taken and it was decided to mail the Voice via First Class mail for the next year.

Becky had brought up the fact that there are several members who request extra copies of the Voice to be sent to family members.

After reviewing the average cost per book per issue, Brad moved to charge $15 per year for an additional subscription to the Voice or $5 per issue. Darrell seconded this motion.

Motion passed. Becky will continue to provide issues to FFA students doing projects or other interested or prospective Shropshire buyers.

Jim Percival noted that he is still working on the Club Lamb Page of the Shropshire website.

to attend but had emailed a report of the progress of the transition of NSIP data to the Lamb Plan system.The have been some delays but it is anticipated to be completed by August. There have also been some ultrasound clinics where people can learn to take rib eye and backfat measurements so that carcass data can be predicted for Lamb Plan.

NAILE Sale has been approved for Saturday, Nov. 13. The Junior show is Sunday Nov. 14 (third breed). The Open Show is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. Open show sheep will be able to come into the barn on Monday. Every effort will be made by the sale committee to facilitate open exhibitors consigning to the ewe sale on the 13th.

Old Business: 2011 National Show will be held at the Big E in West Springfield, Mass. during the third week of September. The Shropshires will show either on Saturday or Sunday of that weekend. The group will be able to choose the day of the weekend to show and also will have the choice of morning or afternoon. Becky noted that the Shropshire judge will also be required to three other breeds and possibly market lambs and would have to be available to judge for three days. Nominations for the judge were opened. The following were nominated: Tim Barnes, Evan Snyder, Brad Angus, Mike Anderson, and Kyle Thayer.

Gary and Jim moved to close nominations for this judge. After a vote, the Board recommends in the following order: Tim Barnes, Kyle Thayer and Brad Angus. This list will be submitted to the Big E at the 2010 Exhibitors meeting.

President’s History 125th Anniversary- The First Hundred Years History Book was printed for the Centennial. There had been talk of a supplement for the 125th but it never got off the ground. Bob Johnson and Norm Jackson moved to have Matthew Anderson and Randy Rife head up the collection of information on the presidents for the next 25 years.

Mark will speak with each of them and Becky will follow up with a letter. Rinda thought she would be able to publish this in time for the 2011 National show if everything was in place

by June 1. It was decided to use monies left _______ PAGE 10

over from the 125th for this project.

Judge evaluation- Gary reported that he has worked up a form on which exhibitors can evaluate a judge at major shows. After discussion, a few small changes were made.

Carol Rueber moved with a second from Bob Johnson to first try it at the All American Junior show and have it available at the NAILE junior and open shows. All Shropshire exhibitors will receive a form when they check in at the AAJS and will be asked to return it within two weeks.

New Business: Louisville Matching Funds Currently the Shropshire exhibitor is charged by the ASRA $10 per individual entry and group class. Since group classes are not required to be pre-entered it is difficult to create an invoice ahead of the show. Some exhibitors have no intention of showing in the group classes. It was thought that revising the method for the Matching Funds to charge a $12 entry fee for individual classes only would simplify the billing and collection procedure and the income would be about the same. Darrell moved and Gary seconded the motion charge $12 per head entered starting with the 2011 show. All members present supported this motion. For the current year, however, the arrangement will remain as $10 per head and group class.

Illinois CD’s- There are two Certificates of Deposit in the name of The American Shropshire Registry Association at the bank in Harvard, Ill Dale Blackburn was the only signer on the accounts. These have matured in 2010 but since there is no other signer of record, the monies are not available at this time and both accounts have been renewed for 36 months. The correspondent at that bank reported that Board meeting minutes designating an interim treasurer after Dale’s resignation and death would be required to add that person to the account as an authorized signer. That action had been done with the main checking account but no action had been taken with these Certificates. Tim moved and Brad seconded to draw up a letter with these minutes and a statement that Becky is the treasurer and has the authority

Along these same lines, Becky has opened a higher interest bearing account at the bank she deals with in Massachusetts. She submitted forms to Mark McCabe as current president and Darrell Dockter as vice-president to collect the necessary information to add them as signers to this account and the ASRA’s checking account so that the aforementioned situation will not be repeated.

Louisville Board meeting- A board meeting needs to be scheduled for November in Louisville.There are four days between the junior show (Sunday) and Open show (Thursday).

There was discussion on the meeting’s schedule to get the best attendance. Four members present chose Saturday, Nov. 13. Five members chose Wednesday, Nov. 17. Becky is to poll the absent members for their preference.

Ram Christening – Different ways to generate income had been discussed in the past.

Darrell had suggested charging a fee to officially name a ram or ewe. This would reserve the name for that sheep only for a period of time. He moved to charge a $25 fee to save a name for 20 years. Becky noted that some breeders name every sheep on their applications and could continue to do so but no sheep could be named a name that has been previously purchased with this fee. After some discussion Darrell amended his motion that a sheep could be christened for $25 and that name would be reserved for 10 years.

Jim seconded his motion. After some discussion, the motion passed 5 to 4. Becky will keep track of the Christened names that will be printed on the registration papers. This will begin on January 1, 2011. A special notice will be printed in the October and February issues of the Voice and on the website. The item will also be added to the fee schedule.

Yearling Ewe Futurity- Gary is interested in increasing participation in the junior show at the Spectacular. After discussion, Gary moved to make the 2011 Shropshire Spectacular Junior Show a double point show for futurity nominated yearling ewes. Darrell seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Youth Regional Support - Brad asked to clarify the disbursement of junior funds to the Illinois Shropshire Association. The junior program is set up to appropriate $300 every other year to each director. Some years ago, the Illinois region received $500 but the reasons were not clear. After discussion, Darrell moved and Jim seconded to return to the $300 appropriation amount for Illinois.

Becky reported that a school project in Alabama had requested recognition for two students in an “1880 Immigration Project”. In return for material for the Voice, Becky sent award certificates and 125th Anniversary pins to this project. Hopefully, this will provide some interesting reading in the October issue.

With no other business to come before this meeting, Jim moved and Gary seconded to adjourn at 9:28 p.m.

Stars of Louisville Sale Plans are in the works to succeed in a second ewe sale at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. The sale will take place on Saturday, Nov. 13th in the sale arena is just off the sheep facility, near the “office trailer.” We have been very fortunate to have been able to retain the opening time slot in the day’s sale events.

We will begin our morning with the entries being evaluated at 9 a.m. The entries will be available for buyers’ inspection. The order of sale will be posted and the sale will follow as soon as possible after 10 a.m. in order to maintain the schedule of the remaining breed sales of the day.

Danny Westlake of Marysville, Ohio will serve as auctioneer.Terms of sale are cash or good check paid on sale day. If you are unable to attend the sale in person, any member of the sale committee can handle a bid for you but requests for mail bids should be directed to Sale Manager, Becky Peterson. The sale committee consists of Chairman Randy Rife, Bob Johnson, Steve Majchrzak, Jim Brandt and Mark McCabe. As in any other sale, ownership transfers will be made in the ASRA office after the sale and will be returned to the buyer as soon as possible.

ing information will be announced at the sale block. Consignors have been asked to guarantee that sale entries are free of the “spider gene” and be resistant to Scrapie by being either QR or RR at codon 171. A veterinarian will be on hand to issue health certificates.

If your state requires a permit to enter the state, please contact your state veterinarian’s office ahead of time to make the necessary arrangements. All sheep will be identified by a USDA approved ear tag or tattoo.

For a few other sale perks, consignors will be able to nominate ewe lambs entered in this sale to be eligible to compete in the second Shropshire Yearling Ewe Futurity in 2011, if purchased by youth buyers. Also, sale management has been able to allow consignors to retain rights to show their entries in the Junior Shropshire Show on Sunday, Nov. 14 and/or the open show on Thursday, Nov. 18. This encourages the breeder to consign a sheep that he considers worthy of showing in the National Show in Louisville and making that quality available to buyers. We will assist purchasers who are not exhibitors in obtaining an early release for purchased animals only after the Junior or Open show if the animal is entered. Also, with exhibitors attending from across the country, consignors and the sale committee will work with buyers needing transportation of sheep purchased at the sale.

Shropshire Spectacular The weekend of June 18 and 19 saw another Spectacular Shropshire event. The traditional National Sale took place at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.The sale showed 70 head of Shrop ram and ewes, ably sorted by judge Dan Spilde of Stoughton,WI. After a warm afternoon, many people gathered for a nice meal and program by the Illinois Shropshire Association.

Four royalty awards were made to the following youths: Brianna Brockmann– Illinois Shropshire Ambassador, Sara Nyen– Illinois Shropshire Junior Ambassador, Jaedyn Slutz– Illinois Miss BoPeep, and Mason Peterson– Illinois Boy Blue. Then auctioneer Curt Overcash presided over the sale of several donated items to help raise funds for the Junior Show and the All-American. A total of $625 was raised. Many thanks go to so many for their generosity. As a result of another auction that evening, 12 advertisers each won space for a month on the homepage of

www.shropshires.org. Funds raised from this particular sale support the ASRA’s website.

The ewe division boasted 56 head. The Grand Champion was the Junior Champion from the early spring ewe lamb class. She came from the Chris Whittaker flock and sold to Walker Shrops of Perkins, Okla. for $1500. The early class averaged $600 on eight lambs. The Reserve Grand Champion was the Senior Champion, a Brockmann entry that also sold to Walker at $1900.

The Reserve Junior Champion Ewe was a late spring lamb from Avery Shropshires selling to Dalton Hicks, Stillwater, Okla. for $3000. She was the high selling ewe, making that class average $671.88 over eight lambs.

ASRA Announces Voice Subscription Program begins in February

Are you no longer registering Shropshires but wish to keep up on the happenings? Are you a multiple-household member but want every house to have Shropshire reading material? Are you a member who wants to send a Voice to your Granddad? The ASRA provided these extra books at no cost for many years, but things are changing with our present economy.

In order to help support the production of this super Shropshire publication, the Board of Directors decided it is time to allow extra copies to go out to non-current members at the average cost to produce a book. Several members and other Shrop-lovers have inquired about this option. Starting with the February 2011 issue, members (defined as having paid annual dues in the past two of the previous three years, as per the Bylaw Amendment 11/14/09) will receive one copy of each issue of the Voice as part of their membership. Persons not meeting this requirement and requesting copies will be required to purchase them at $5 per issue or $15 per year.

The yearly subscriptions will be mailed with the regular mailing of the Voice. Single issue requests will be sent as ordered. Note that youngsters requesting Shropshire information as part of school projects will still receive a book at no charge as this is the cost of promotion. Occasional other special requests will be handled on an individual basis. Voices will still be available at major events as part of the promotional habit. And don’t forget that you can always access the Voice on line at www.shropshires.org !

Illinois votes to slick shear Rick Adams of Chebanse, Ill. sent his brief report of the recent activities of the Illinois Shropshire Breeders that met at the state fair on August 21. The group will request that the National Sale be in Springfield at the Spectacular in June of 2011. The following judges were nominated for that sale in order of preference: Brian Mohr, Dan Spilde, and Tim Barnes. Brad Slutz was re-elected to the national board. Illinois Officers were elected as follows: Rick Adams President, Gary Brockmann VP, Megan Mumm Sec/Treas, Tom Slutz, Claudia Snyder, Diane Snyder, Jason Mumm, and Chris Whittaker directors.

In other business it was voted to have all Shropshire Sheep be shown slick sheared at the 2011 State Fair and beyond. It was vigorously discussed and in the end was in favor of slick shearing. The State Fair Superintendent, Ed Whitcome, and the Competitive Events Chairman have been notified of this change and will be up to them to get it in the fair book for next year.

“All supporters of slick shearing are encouraged to come to our state fair next year as a show of support for our efforts,” Adams said.

All-American is overwhelming success in 2010

By Deb Hopkins Show Chairman The 17th Annual All-American Junior Show was held at the Michigan State University Livestock Pavilion in East Lansing, Mich. from July 2-4. What a great show and weekend! The 2010 All-American had 285 exhibitors from 22 states actually exhibiting 1366 head of the 1546 entered. The numbered shown is up 200 head from the last time we visited Michigan and the barn was filled to the hilt!

The All-American Show is a sheep show where the major focus is on the exhibitors and their families. Even though many awards are given out over the course of the weekend the show is designed for our junior exhibitors and their families. The exhibitors participated in many events besides the breeding sheep and market lambs shows including the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, pizza party, skillathon, judging contest, ice cream and pie social, lamb camp, wool show, cookout dinner, promotional contests, full course breakfasts including blueberry pancakes, individual and team showmanship competitions and scholarship programs.

got treated to a campus tour including the beef and sheep barn units, the MSU state of the art meats lab and free ice cream at the Michigan State Dairy Store. It was a great bus tour that was greatly appreciated by the attendees!

This show would not have been possible without the help of the many volunteers that helped out during and prior to the show. A BIG THANK-YOU goes out to all of them. At the head of it all was Michigan coordinator Judy Moore who did a wonderful job!

A BIG thank-you also goes out to MSU Livestock Pavilion Staff for being at our beck and call responding to all of our bedding needs and on-site preparations. They had the National Junior Shorthorn Show just before our event and did a great job of preparing the facility for our arrival!

The All-American Committee would once again like to thank all of the National Breed Associations, Alum-a-Line, Shear De-lite Trimming Stands, the Michigan Sheep Breeders, Michigan State University, the Michigan Farm News, the Angel Family, the L.C. Scramlin and Nick Mazick Families for their financial support and sponsorship of the special activities that made this show so special! Many individual donors and sheep breeders across the country supported the show in one way or another by sponsoring classes, selling ewe lambs, buying raffle tickets, donating items to be auctioned off, donating raffle items, donating gift baskets, donating door prizes, and attending the spaghetti supper at the Ohio Sales

May weekend. It was truly an organized cooperative effort and THANK-YOU to you all!

Plans are under way for next year’s show, which will be taking place at the Delaware State Fairgrounds, Harrington, Del. from July 1-3, 2011. The welcome mat is being put forth by the Delaware folks and once again special activities are being planned for the exhibitors and their families. North East Youth Judge: Steve Majchrzak Over 200 youngsters and 800 sheep from 10 states made their presence known this past July at the 26th Annual North East Youth Sheep Show in Massachusetts. This show is unique to some as the exhibitors are required to prepare and show their own animals.This has resulted in several very capable young fitters and showman in the area.

Although Shropshires are not a major force in the North East, the quality of this show was strong. Of particular note was the success of Shropshire exhibitor Mandy Swartz of Attica, NY. Mandy won her age division in Fitting and Showmanship and then went on to be selected as the Supreme Showman of the event. Mandy was presented with a pick-up truck topper provided by Exiss Trailers. Congratulations to Mandy on her success and thank you to Exiss for their generosity!

Walker named Youth Ambassador Please join me in welcoming the 2010 Shropshire Junior Ambassador, Hallie Walker.

This program is in its second year now and interest continues to grow. Hallie is a junior in high school and is from Williamstown, Mass.

Her family is relatively new to the sheep industry but Hallie has emerged with enthusiasm and success. Hallie is an excellent student and is a member and current president of the Pioneer Valley Young Shepherds 4-H Club. Some of you met Hallie at the Classic when she was helping to raise funds to the support the ASRA’s portion of the All-American. Others will meet her as she works to get the youth involved in the activities and opportunities at the different events around the country. We are so glad to have her on board this year!

What a summer this has been! I’ve met Shropshire breeders around the country, seen some of the best and most enthusiastic youth showing out there, and am looking forward to the exiting shows and events to come this fall. As the 2010 Junior Ambassador, I’ve been lucky enough to travel around the country and introduce myself youth and parents. Through their stories, I saw glimpses of Shropshire farms around the country. One little boy, a first time shower at the All-American, shared his nerves before entering the ring, and told me that Lily, his ewe lamb, was his first Shropshire.

As he walked in the ring, he said goodbye to me and kissed Lily squarely on the nose. The love of Shropshires was engendered in him early, and is the reason I applied for the Ambassador position in the first place.

The position carried me to my first-time attendance at the Shropshire Spectacular in Springfield, Ill. I felt the promised Midwest heat (you guys weren’t kidding, it’s hot!) and was again shown the warmth of the welcome Shropshire breeders always seem to offer. The next month, I attended the All-American in East Lansing, Mich., where the depth of classes and the tension of friendly competition spoke to our youth’s dedication and involvement in _______ PAGE 36

their flocks.The North East Youth Sheep Show also turned out a competitive showing, inside and out of the breed. Mandy Swartz represented Shropshires with her win of Supreme Champion showman—and the personalized pickup popper that went with it.

I’ve finally made it to the Big E, where the Eastern States show off their sheep over the two weeks of the fair. Tomorrow is the Shropshire show, and from what I’ve seen on the stands around the barn, it promises to be a great one. NAILE is next on the showing schedule for me, where I look forward to seeing breeders from around the country at the banquet, attending the quiz-bowl competition that promises cash prizes, and anticipate double futurity points in the youth show. Even further in to next year’s schedule, I look forward to the upcoming national events in the Eastern states! With the All-American arriving in Delaware (as close to the beach as sheep showing can get), and the National Shropshire Show at the Big E, which will be a competitive and fun show for youth and adults with the New England fall foliage, Yankee Candle, the Basketball Hall of Fame, and great hospitality (lobster is still on the menu), I hope young Shropshire owners will venture to the coast!

Ebert, Hardesty are scholarship winners for 2010 Five scholarship applications were received in 2010 and they were all excellent, making the choice of two winners rather difficult. Two equal scholarships of $400 are being awarded. One award goes to Monica Ebert of Saint George, Kansas and the other winner is Megan Hardesty of New Bremen, Ohio.

Monica is the daughter of Jeff and Kerri Ebert. She graduated from Rock Creek High School in 2009. There she was a member of the FFA where she had served as sentinel, vice president and president. She also lettered in basketball, track and cross country.

She served as the secretary of her class for four years. Monica has been active in other breeds’ youth organizations and most notable, served as the first Shropshire Youth Ambassador in 2009. There, she helped to chart the course for that position. In her first year at Kansas State, she maintained a GPA of 3.667.

You will meet Megan and read her essay in the January issue of The Voice. Following is a portion of Monica’s essay.

I have been involved in the sheep industry my entire life. My family has owned sheep for 52 consecutive years. My personal involvement began at a young age by me attempting to help my dad on the farm and riding to sales with my parents helping with our sheep in any way I could. My love for sheep sparked from those early experiences around my family’s sheep farm. My family has always owned in between 150 to 200 wether-type Dorset, Hampshire, Shropshire, Suffolk and crossbred ewes.

Now that I am in college my dad is cutting back on the number of ewes we have.

We are in the process of selling all of our crossbred ewes. We currently have around 125 ewes in our flock with about 30 of those ewes being Shropshires. When I was _______ PAGE 38

14 I bought a quarter interest in my family’s sheep flock. My sister also owns a quarter and my parents own the other half.

Due to my ownership of a percentage of the sheep flock I have several responsibilities. I help out with the day-to-day chores and tasks such as deworming, vaccinating, sorting, shearing, etc. Although I am in college now I still come home on the weekends to help my dad – and I am home in summer to help with the sheep. Luckily for me Kansas State is only 20 miles away from our family farm.

I also enjoy showing the lambs we raise.

On a yearly basis I attend several spring shows to get my show flock used to the ring. I also attend the Pottawatomie County Fair, the Kansas State Fair, the Kansas Junior Livestock Show, and Ak-Sar-Ben. I have also attended the All-American Junior Show five years and am planning on attending it again this summer. Two summers I won the Top Gun award for the Shropshire breed at the All-American Junior Show. I also have taken part in the Shropshire futurity program and am looking forward to taking part in the yearling futurity program this year. In addition I have shown at the North American the past four years.

Cassidy Lobdell receives Rueber scholarship The 2010 Royce Rueber Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Cassidy Lobdell of Freeport, Ill. She is the daughter of Tim and Brenda Lobdell.

Fitting Tips

By Becky Peterson During the Shropshire Spectacular, a few youth assembled for a special activity. Gary Brockmann of Garden Prairie, Ill. gave a brief, but very detailed demonstration of fitting the heads and legs of Shropshire sheep. Gary emphasized that the fitting of slick shorn Shrops does not end at the knees, hocks and heads.

Gary said that the key ingredient of success in these areas depends on the carding, just like on a fitted animal. One should card every last knot of wool out of the head and legs for a better result. He recommends that the Shrop head be trimmed so as to smoothly blend the wool cap from the upper part of the muzzle to a high point on the crown and then back to a minimal amount of wool just behind the poll or between the ears. The wool cap should also be blended from the side over the eyes to the center. He says the maximum amount of wool left on the top of the head should not exceed 1 ½ inches. More wool than that detracts from the breed type. A small amount of neatly trimmed wool should be left on the side between the ears and eyes.

Legs also should not be ignored. Again, the knots, clumps and tags should be removed but enough wool should be left on the legs to see that there is wool. A wire slicker brush works

well to pull all of the fiber in the same direction.

The wool left on the legs can then be trimmed to enhance the correct structure of the leg. A cow-hocked animal should have wool left on the outside of the hocks. A wide-hocked sheep would be better if trimmed on the outside and a little wool left on the inside of the joint. Front legs should be attended to in the same manner.

In either case, the border of wool at the knee or hock should be blended so that the wool did not end abruptly.These finishing touches will go a long way toward the appearance of one’s favorite animal in the show ring.

When I first showed sheep in 4-H in 1962 at our county fair, you had to have your sheep there for the entire week and then moved to another fair for the next week. Many of the open show jockeys/breeders showed for 10 to 15 weeks straight. You made lifelong friendships, had time to master the art of fitting, plus had time to relax and enjoy a much slower paced lifestyle. Today is much different. Many fairs, in Ohio at least, have dropped their open shows. Most that are left are one or two day events. You don’t have time to really get to know other breeders, let alone objectively evaluate what others are showing. This has contributed to “barnyard blindness” in all of us. What does the future hold?

The new trend is internet auctions allowing folks to buy their next stud ram or select females without being there. How will they get to know fellow breeders? It will be most interesting to see how this trend develops and is accepted. It seems to me the excitement and hype of a live auction and just being there to personally evaluate the offering is part of the life blood of a breed. The presale shows are really only to establish a sale order, but the competitiveness creates an offering with much greater depth and quality. The challenge of personally selecting the next piece of the puzzle is intriguing to say the least. Watching young folks pick out and buy a futurity ewe to show definitely creates a level of excitement that an on-line sale would lack. At any rate, change is inevitable.

Nothing stays the same. Our time seems to become more and more precious.We all enjoy the competitiveness of the show ring and the camaraderie it develops. I would like to end with a tag-line from one of Emil Hartzell’s sale catalogs of the early 1970’s, “Only the test of time proves true quality!” This can be applied to sheep, to friendships and also to the lifetime experiences of showing sheep. Some folks love to golf or fish and then some of us live to show sheep. It gets in your blood!

The Final Drive

Livestock shows are an abstract concept.

I’ve been going to county, state and national agricultural expositions all my life, so I’d never given much thought to what an “outsider” might think upon seeing their first steer or heifer show. Last week, with the conclusion of the Ohio State Fair, I had reason to pause and consider just such an occasion. One of my oldest and dearest friends, upon listening to me retell the glory of the Sale of Champions (the most successful edition in its history, raising over $200,000 for youth scholarship and development programs), asked me some very pointed and insightful questions about these exhibitions.

Sometimes it takes what, at first, seems like an obvious question to really get the mind working.

Today’s 4-H and FFA members likely give little thought to the ultimate origins of the modern livestock show. What my FFA Advisor once referred to as “Little League for farm kids” holds a few similarities to those fairs and farm shows of old, but their actual purpose for existing is far different today than a century ago.

The first county fairs and country farm expos were very basic affairs that evolved as a way for farmers and breeders to quite literally show off their stock, both for marketing and instructive purposes. In those days, before technologies like Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer, a breeder might use such livestock shows as a way to evaluate his herd, or as a tool for selecting the next replacement female or herd sire. These early shows were also good barometers for determining trends in the evolution, so to speak, of the species.

Look back at black and white photos from livestock shows in the first thirty years of

the 20th Century, and you’ll see how vastly different an animal looks today than from that era. Everything from body size and shape to confirmation and temperament is different. As the demands of the market and the needs of the farmer changed with time, so then did the selection for certain traits and characteristics. Livestock shows were a way for the industry to literally see the trends, and learn what influential thinkers were looking for as they evaluated the stock in the competition.

Today’s livestock shows still fill those needs, to an extent. Breeders certainly use these events to showcase their stock and promote their farm operation. Showing your animals, however, is not the only venue from which to do such promotion. From the Internet to trade publications, breeders have more opportunity to market their produce today than at any point in history.

Shows, therefore, have taken on more of a competitive nature, and therein have be-

come excellent metaphors for life. Livestock projects in 4-H and FFA teach young people work ethic, responsibility, animal husbandry and well-being, fiscal discipline, and management skills. By working hard and learning a great deal about the proper management and care of the animal, the student can do very well at any given competition. Animal selection, nutrition, and handling are all acquired skills that will serve these students well later in life, as well.

At the conclusion of a livestock show is what if referred to as “The Final Drive.”

This is where the winners of each class or division of animals shown re-enter the ring to compete for the overall title of Grand Champion at that particular show. In the spirit of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the show’s judge places each class of animals, leaving only a handful in the ring at the conclusion of the contest, and ultimately selecting a single winner. In life, we work hard and try to increase our knowledge so that we too might advance in our own endeav-

ors, and ultimately end up in the “winner’s circle.”

The Final Drive, of course, isn’t all about winning the show. As the Judge at last week’s State Fair hog show pointed out, there’s only one “winner.” But did the other exhibitors really “lose?” While not dwelling on the warm-and-fuzzy cliché about all of us being winners, in this particular arena I can speak from experience. While I never won “Grand Champion” honors at a fair or show, growing up with livestock and the responsibility of caring for show cattle helped shape my life in numerous ways.

The reasons we show stock today may be very different from the farmers of yesteryear, but the benefits of working hard to make it to the Final Drive are every bit as real, and every bit as important.
