American Shropshire Registry Association

President Bill Bryant

Just touching base with you all. Hopefully WINTER is OVER and spring is HERE!

For those of you who don’t know me, I am a third generation Shropshire breeder. My grandfather, Max Bryant, actually started this “flock” in 1933 and, believe it or not, my grandmother kept everything! I have his first registration and transfer framed! Perhaps some of you older breeders might remember my younger days traveling with Max (and his O2 tank) to all of the shows and sales.

I am an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan, football, women’s basketball and softball. I was an NCAA Division 1.2.3 womens’ basketball referee for many years, retiring in 2019 after a serious accident. Now I’m spending my spare time coaching junior high baseball and high school softball.

When Max passed in 1994, I was the grandson he chose to follow in his footsteps with his flock. I have now tripled the flock size over the last 30 years– of course, making some of my own adjustments here and there. We still carry on BRYANT SHROPS here in Central Ohio. I am sure Bryant Shrops in the future will be carried on by Max’s greatgrandson, who has already exhibited himself as our next shepherd.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone at our shows and sales throughout the coming year. We welcome anyone traveling through Central Ohio to stop in for a visit.

ex. secretary Jeff eBert

Hello Shropshire Breeders,

Please allow me to introduce myself to you as your new secretary and registrar. My name is Jeff Ebert and I have been around the sheep industry my entire life. I am very excited to have been selected as the new American Shropshire Registry Association secretary. It is a position that I am honored to have. A special thanks to Becky Peterson for her years of service to the ASRA and for her great help in the smooth transition of the ASRA to Kansas.

A little more background on myself for those who do not know me. I was born and raised on a diversified farming operation that has had sheep since 1957. My family started with Hampshires but we soon diversified into other breeds including Dorsets, Suffolks and Shropshires. My daughter, Monica, wanted a different breed so Shropshires were added in the early 1990s. We continue to have a flock of 50 head of Hampshires and Shropshires, mostly selling commercial rams and starter flocks. I also currently serve as chairman of the American Lamb Board.

As for the ASRA office, things will be slightly different in that the ASRA has contracted with National Sheep Registry to provide registry services and serve as the ASRA secretary. National Sheep Registry is a joint venture between myself, Laurie Majchrzak and Nikki Ebert. We hope to help small sheep associations become more efficient by saving them money through the various services that we can provide.

Specific to Shropshires, all registry work needs to be mailed to ASRA 10015 Flush Road, St. George, KS 66535 or emailed to nationalsheepregistry@gmail.com. My cell phone is 785-458-9174 and I will answer it most anytime from 8 AM to 7 PM Monday-Friday. I am still working on office hours but if you call and get my voice mail, please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.

As we approach sale and show season, please submit your registrations timely so we can get them back to you as quickly as possible. Please double check your work for any errors as errors ultimately slow down the work.

I look forward to meeting those of you that I might not have met yet and talking Shropshires with all of you. It is an exciting time to be breeding and raising Shropshires. Don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance.

All-American Junior Show heads to Illinois State fairgrounds July 4th weekend

The 2025 All-American Junior Sheep Show is going to be held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield, Ill. from July 3-6, 2025. This will be the first time bringing the show back to Illinois after the record breaking 2021 post COVID show and we are looking forward to another large show. The Illinois Show hosts are working very hard to make the 2025 show another very successful event and there will be a few housing changes from the past to make it an even better experience.

New this year will be an AOB division for any U.S. registered papered breed that is not already supported in the show. The sponsorship of this division has come through a very generous donation from Mid-States Wool Growers. We will be able to include even more juniors to the All-American Junior Show experience, no matter which registered breed they show. Also, new this year is a pre-show raffle ticket incentive for preferred penning going to the top five exhibitor sellers. All the details are available on the home page of the AAJS website www. allamericanjuniorshow.com.

The entr y deadline is May 25th. ALL ENTRIES NEED TO BE MADE ONLINE, this is primarily due to the lack of reliability of snail mail. The entry fee is $20.00 per live animal class. Late entries will be accepted but entry fees are doubled to $40.00. Please be aware of these deadlines and rates so you can get your entries in on time to avoid extra costs!

The All-American is the premier and largest junior breeding sheep show in the country. The breeds participating this year are: AOB, Polled Dorsets-Fitted & Slick Shorn, Horned Dorsets, Dorset Advantage, Hampshires-Fitted & Slick Shorn, Southdowns, Border Leicesters-White & Natural Colored, Cheviots, Cotswolds, Shropshires, Oxfords, Montadales, Romneys-White & Natural Colored, Lincolns-White & Natural Colored, Natural Coloreds, North Coun-

Junior Show

try Cheviots, Rambouillets, Targhees, Texels, Tunis, Dorpers, White Dorpers, Columbias, Corriedales, Katahdins, Merinos, Babydoll Southdowns and Suffolks-Fitted & Slick Shorn and Valais Blacknose.

Polled Dorsets, Hampshires and Suffolks have two completely separate shows for Fitted and Slick Shorns, while Lincolns, Romneys and Border Leicesters feature two separate breed shows for the white and natural colored sheep.

The National Junior Tunis Show, National Junior Suffolk Show, National Junior Romney Show, National Junior North Country Show and National Junior Corriedale Show will be held in conjunction with the All-American Junior Show this year. Judges for this year’s event will be JJ Maddox, OK; Paul Kuber, WA; and Justin Fruechte, SD. Thank you to all the National Breed Associations and their breeders for their continued special sponsorship of this show!

If you have never attended an All-American Junior Show, please make plans to attend this very special event! It is much more than just a sheep show, as there are several activities for the whole family. The show features a lamb camp for young sheep owners, an Illinois Corn Hole tourney for exhibitors, a fun Ag Olympics social event, a sheep skil-athon competition with several participation awards being sponsored, a sheep judging contest, complimentary Pizza Party Friday night and Pony Shoe dinner on Saturday evening, individual and team showmanship competitions, a wool show, promotional contests

Shropshire Hall of Fame

The American Shropshire Registry Association initiated a program in 2022 to recognize a person or family that has promoted, raised and contributed to the success of registered Shropshire sheep in the United States. It is the ASRA Board of Directors goal to embrace, celebrate and honor those people or families who have been historically influential to the Shropshire Breed. Some of the recipients have not been recognized with their profile in a previous issue of the Voice and will be recognized in the next few issues.

Michael Anderson Paxton, Illinois

Nominated by Dusty Rincker for 2022 Hall of Fame

Mike raised Shropshires for 56 years. He was elected to the ASRA Board in 1983 and served for 21 years, never missing a meeting, 3 years as President. Mike was active in the Illinois Shropshire Breeders Association for many years serving as President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer. He was elected to the Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Assoc in 1994 and still serves. He was inducted to their Hall of Fame in 2019.

Mike exhibited his Shrops at the Illinois State Fair for 50-plus years and other state fairs and the North American, winning many champion honors. Mike made the trek to the National Shropshire Shows

in California 3 times.
