CEOUPDATE

A NEW SEASON, A SHARED AMBITION

As we stand on the cusp of a brand-new grassroots football season in Shropshire, I want to take this opportunity, on behalf of everyone at Shropshire FA, to welcome players, coaches, referees, volunteers and supporters back to the game we all love.

And welcome to our new look digital magazine……

Last season was nothing short of inspirational.

Across every corner of our county, football continued to unite communities, develop young talent and provide opportunities for everyone - regardless of background or ability - to be part of something bigger.

From the quiet dedication of our referees to the tireless work of club volunteers and the growing participation across girls’ and disability football, Shropshire once again proved itself a proud and thriving hub of the national game.

Among our standout achievements last season:

·Record Participation: We saw a significant rise in player registrations across youth, women’s and walking football. The growth in girls’ football especially reflects years of groundwork and commitment from clubs, schools and volunteers across the county.

·Our landmark partnership with Telford based SEAH, as overall sponsor of grassroots football for females in Shropshire, continues to benefit more than 2,500+ players as well as our 60 registered female referees and newly trained cohort of female coaches, whilst also helping to enhance our female cup competitions.

·Facility Development: Investment through the Football Foundation and local partnerships enabled improvements at several grassroots venues, including approval for new 3G pitches and upgraded changing facilities, helping us to create welcoming, safe and sustainable spaces for our football community.

·Coach and Referee Development: We trained and supported hundreds of new referees and coaches, ensuring the future of our game is in skilled and passionate hands.

·Community Projects: Initiatives such as our volunteer recognition programmes - our Long Service Awards, Monthly FairPlay Awards and Grassroots Awards.

As we look ahead to the 2025/26 season, our priorities remain focused, ambitious and rooted in the grassroots ethos.

Some of the key areas we’ll be championing include:

·Equity, Diversity & Inclusion: We’re committed to creating environments where everyone feels safe, welcomed and represented. Our new EDI Action Plan, launching this Autumn, will guide clubs and leagues in building inclusive pathways at all levels.

·Youth Engagement: A new Young Leaders programme will give 14 to 21-year-olds across Shropshire a voice in shaping the future of our game, with opportunities in coaching, refereeing, media and administration.

·Safeguarding and Respect: Our ‘Play Safe’ campaign will again run with a sharper focus and stronger messaging, ensuring football remains a safe space for young people, vulnerable adults and improving behaviour.

·Sustainability in Football: We’ll also be piloting new initiatives that reduce the environmental footprint of grassroots football, from energy-efficient clubhouses to sustainable kit and travel solutions.

None of this would be possible without the unwavering commitment of our football family - our clubs, leagues, match officials, volunteers and supporters.

Your time, energy and passion are the lifeblood of the game in Shropshire, and I thank each of you for the role you play.

So, whether you're pulling on your boots for the first time, volunteering behind the scenes, or cheering on from the touchline, let’s make this season one to remember.

Let’s grow the game.

Let’s protect it.

And above all, let’s enjoy every moment of it.

Here’s to a safe, successful and inspiring 2025/26 season

ARoaring Congratulations totheLionesses–FromShropshire FAwithPride

As the final whistle blew and the celebrations echoed across the country, Shropshire FA proudly saluted the Lionesses on their outstanding achievements on the world stage.

Their passion, dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence continue to inspire a generation - and here in Shropshire, the impact is felt stronger than ever.

The journey of the women’s game in our county is one that mirrors the national momentum, and it’s only growing bolder

We’re thrilled to witness more girls lacing up their boots, joining grassroots clubs and dreaming big, currently 2500 females are registered to play the game in the county, and the numbers are growing fast - fuelled by the example set by our national team and supported by the passionate community here at home.

835,000 girls regularly play football in England, marking an increase of over 165,000 from 2017, according to Sport England.

Shining a Spotlight on Shropshire’s Women in Football

Earlier this year, the Shropshire Star, the Express and Star, and later the Shropshire Magazine, helped us mark International Women’s Day, and the Women’s Euros, with a powerful feature showcasing some of the incredible female figures at the heart of our local game, our very own females at Shropshire FA

From coaches and referees to players and administrators, the article captured the dedication and drive of the women making football thrive across the county

Their stories echo the Lionesses’ legacy - of pushing boundaries, breaking stereotypes and building something truly game-changing for the next generation.

This progress would not be possible without the powerful support of our partners

Shropshire FA’s primary business partner, SEAH, has been instrumental in driving forward our mission to make football inclusive, accessible and inspiring for females across the county. Their commitment to community impact and equality has helped elevate opportunities for female players and leaders

We also extend a huge thank you to Furrows, proud sponsor of the girls' game in Shropshire Their ongoing support ensures that young players can develop their skills in a supportive and professionally backed environment- from grassroots right through to elite pathways

The Lionesses have lit a fire in hearts across the country

In Shropshire, we’re making sure that flame burns bright

With dedicated partners, passionate players and a growing movement of women and girls in football, the future is dazzlingly bright

Congratulations again to the Lionesses

You’ve made history - and inspired a new chapter in Shropshire grassroots football

Football Development & Community Clubs

The FA Club Programme: Thriving Community Clubs Initiative

Across the country, football clubs are growing in size but becoming fewer in number

As a result, many are evolving beyond the pitch and positioning themselves as central community hubs.

To support this ongoing transformation, The FA has launched the Club Programme, designed to help clubs operate more sustainably, expand their reach and build stronger community ties

The initiative focuses on three core areas:

1 Strengthening Club Finances

Support for clubs to take greater ownership of facilities (e g , 3G pitches, grass surfaces and clubhouses)

Guidance in developing commercial and sponsorship opportunities

Access to tools and training to enhance financial and business skills

2 Expanding Playing Opportunities

Improved services and benefits for England

Football Accredited clubs to encourage growth

Support for 1*, 2*, and 3* clubs to increase female and disability participation, and to develop coaches, referees and volunteers

Continued backing for smaller clubs across both rural and urban areas

Help in launching FA sessional programmes, including access to funding and training

3 Deepening Community Engagement

Assistance in showcasing and maximising social and economic impact

Mental health signposting support for club members and wider communities

Links to other community groups and services (eg, NHS, police, refugee networks)

This initiative is designed to help clubs become Thriving Community Clubs - defined as 3-star accredited clubs with strong leadership, robust governance and a supported coaching and volunteer network

This month, Football Development Officer Dylan Shinton, alongside Club Consultant Martin Harrison, held initial meetings with local clubs to begin this exciting journey

If you're a 2 or 3-star club and want to get started on the programme, get in touch at dylanshinton@shropshirefacom to gain access to the Club Programme Platform.

SHROPSHIRE FAACHIEVES THEFA’S CODEOF GOVERNANCE

By evidencing full compliance with the regional Code of Governance, Shropshire FA has demonstrated its commitment to the highest standards of leadership and accountability within grassroots football.

This achievement reflects a significant step forward in aligning with a standard that goes beyond the current gold standard in sport, providing enhanced support and guidance to those delivering the game across the region.

Launched in January 2020, The FA became the first national governing body in English sport to introduce a regional Code of Governance.

The framework, now adopted by a growing number of sports and endorsed by Sport England, is made up of sixty-five rigorous requirements drawn from Sport England and UK Sport’s Code for Sports Governance.

The Code allows each County FA to evaluate its own governance practices, ensuring they operate with robust structures, effective decision-making processes, and inclusive representation.

Key areas include gender and ethnic diversity, youth engagement, and transparent leadership.

All 50 County FAs have now self-assessed against the Code and are actively working to improve their governance.

Shropshire FA becomes the latest to be awarded the County FA Code of Compliance logo, which will now be displayed across its internal and external communications channels.

Andy Weston, CEO of Shropshire FA, said:

"We are incredibly proud to have achieved full compliance with The FA’s Code of Governance. This milestone reflects the hard work and dedication of our team, and our commitment to leading by example in delivering football in a transparent, inclusive, and forward-thinking way. We will continue to develop and improve to ensure we are serving our communities in the best possible manner."

Tim Foster, Head of Operations at the FA, added:

Shropshire FA is proud to announce it has achieved The FA’s Code of Governance for County Football Associations.

"As the national sport that millions of people play and support across the country, it’s vitally important that The FA and the County FAs serve and lead the game as effectively as possible. Through this Code of Governance for County FAs, we have set out how they can enhance their governance at county level and ultimately deliver an even better service to their communities. I’d like to congratulate Shropshire FA in becoming fully compliant and look forward to seeing many other County FAs achieve this same standard as their ongoing work progresses."

Kyle’s impact has also reached the international stage, with his selection to officiate at the IBERCUP in Portugal, one of Europe’s most prestigious youth football tournaments. His involvement reflects the high regard in which he is held by both local and national refereeing bodies and highlights the opportunities that can arise through commitment and excellence

Whether representing the county on the international stage or progressing through the national pathway, Kyle Rowlands, Matt Scholes and Ben Thompson have each demonstrated what it means to officiate with integrity, passion and professionalism

At just 18 years of age, Kyle Rowlands has already established himself as one of the most promising young referees in the county Awarded Shropshire FA’s Match Official of the Year for 2025, Kyle’s journey is a shining example of how talent, when matched with dedication and humility, can quickly flourish

This past year, Kyle achieved a significant milestone with his promotion to Level 4, a reward for his consistent performances, professional conduct and ability to manage games with maturity well beyond his years His presence on the pitch commands respect from players and coaches alike, and his rapid progression has served as inspiration to many other young officials starting their own journeys

"Kyle is not only a brilliant referee but a role model for others coming through the system. His attitude, composure, and eagerness to learn are second to none." - Tom Wellings, Referee Development Officer, Shropshire FA.

“ PROMOTION TO

THE NATIONAL

For Matt Scholes, the 2024/25 season culminated in a remarkable achievement: his promotion to the National Group of Referees This accomplishment marks the next major step in Matt’s officiating career, as he now takes on responsibilities in the National League (Conference Premier) and Premier League 2, along with exposure to the English Football League

This summer also saw Ben Thompson representing Shropshire with distinction at the Italy World Games, an international youth football tournament held near Rome With teams from Italy, Spain, the USA, Canada, Algeria, Slovakia and more, the event provided a unique environment for Ben to develop his skills and gain valuable experience

Throughout the tournament, Ben took on a range of roles - Referee, Assistant Referee and Fourth Official - often covering multiple matches per day. A personal highlight included being appointed Assistant Referee for the U16 Girls Final, working alongside officials from Italy’s development programme

Ben also benefited from guidance and mentoring by some of the game’s most respected former officials, including Peter Fröjdfeldt, Hiroshi Yamauchi and Bruno Cheftel Their feedback and support provided invaluable insight into top-level officiating and helped refine Ben’s game management techniques.

“Officiating abroad is an amazing opportunity to grow, not only as a referee but as a person. The friendships, mentoring and cultural experiences make it hugely rewarding,” said Ben

ShropshireFootball Community Raises Hundreds forBritishHeartFoundation

The Shropshire Football Association has announced that a charity raffle held during this year's Shropshire FA Grassroots Awards earlier this month raised £565 for the British Heart Foundation, highlighting the local football community's determination to tackle heart disease at a time when Shropshire loses approximately 120 people each month to cardiovascular conditions

The fundraising initiative took place during the annual awards ceremony, the flagship event in Shropshire's football calendar that celebrates volunteers, coaches, referees, clubs and community champions who drive grassroots football across the county. The addition of the charity element underscored the evening's theme of community service extending beyond the pitch.

"We're delighted to have raised £565 for the British Heart Foundation," said Andy Weston, Shropshire FA CEO "It was wonderful to see the football community come together not just to celebrate success on the pitch, but to make a difference off it The generosity shown by everyone who attended was truly inspiring."

The funds raised will support the British Heart Foundation's ongoing mission to tackle heart and circulatory diseases through pioneering research, life-saving equipment and public education campaigns. Every pound donated contributes to the charity's work in developing new treatments, training lifesaving skills and funding cutting-edge research that has helped survival rates double over the past 50 years

The Shropshire FA Grassroots Awards recognised outstanding contributions to local football, celebrating individuals and organisations that embody the sport's community spirit. The evening's charitable component demonstrated how grassroots football serves as more than entertainment, acting as a force for positive change in local communities

Meanwhile the next fundraising challenge for the team at Shropshire FA is an ambitious sponsored walkathon day

The team will be donning their best walking shoes on Saturday 2nd August, as they aim to cover many miles across the county, taking in some of the well-known sights in the area, including The Wrekin and Brown Clee Hill, as well as stopping off at many of the county football clubs along the way

Walkathonfor BritishHeart Foundation

Local Football Association Staff to Take on Challenging Walk to Raise Awareness and Funds for Heart Disease

The Shropshire Football Association team has announced an ambitious sponsored walking day in aid of the British Heart Foundation, highlighting the devastating impact of heart disease on the local community.

The event will take place on Saturday 2nd August, and aims to raise both funds and awareness for a cause that affects thousands of families across the county. The walk carries deep significance, with every element designed to represent the human cost of heart disease. A staggering 120 people lose their lives to heart-related conditions each month in Shropshire alone, while over two million people across the UK are currently living with heartrelated illnesses.

Sam's Symbolic Challenge

Leading the fundraising effort, Sam Griffiths, Designated Safeguarding Officer, will undertake a particularly poignant challenge, walking for 120 minutes around each of two local football pitches – Shifnal Town FC, where she will be joined by Shropshire FA Chair, Dave Simpson, and Telford Town FC.

The 120-minute duration at each venue represents the 120 people who lose their lives to heart disease in Shropshire every month, while the two pitches symbolise over two million people across the UK currently living with heart-related conditions. "This is about more than just raising money," said Sam. "Every step I take represents someone in our community who has been affected by heart disease. It's a powerful reminder of why this cause is so important."

Community-Wide Effort

To maximise impact and showcase football clubs across Shropshire, the team including Shropshire FA CEO Andy Weston, team members Kemi Smallman, Caitliln Slater, Tom Wellings and Dylan Shinton, alongside head of football services Zoe Griffiths and board directors Ian Preece and Zona Hannington, have organised four distinct walking groups, each starting and finishing at different local football clubs.

Local Football Clubs Show Support

The initiative has already received enthusiastic backing from local football clubs. Shifnal Town FC and Telford Town FC have both kindly offered use of their facilities for Sam's challenge.

About the British Heart Foundation

The British Heart Foundation is the UK's leading heart charity, funding life-saving research and supporting millions of people living with heart disease Every pound raised helps fund crucial research, support services, and education programmes that save lives and improve outcomes for heart patients
